Obsessiveness erases the other person. It can’t be love if you are so swamped in your own beliefs that you really have no idea that the other person feels differently. Obsessiveness means someone tells you they don’t want to see you anymore and you surprise them the next day with donuts, expecting to be welcomed. The witch in Rapunzel had an obsessive love so she put Rapunzel in a tower that was unreachable except by Rapunzel’s hair. The witch was obsessive and did not care how Rapunzel felt about this situation.

A lot of people convince themselves that their idea of a relationship is the reality. It’s easy to pretend, it’s better than it is, because that’s what you want. It is ordinary obsessiveness when people go back over every word of a conversation, looking for clues of love like Hansel and Gretel following a trail of bread crumbs. What is out of the ordinary, are people who are so busy wanting a body to stuff into the hole of loneliness, that they may not even be paying attention, to whether or not it’s a body worth stuffing. It becomes an obsession to stuff the hole rather than find someone who is worthy. Wanting someone else to fill the hole inside of you is not mentally healthy; it’s your job to define who you are, what you believe, and how to live. If you know those things about yourself it makes you more attractive.

Obsessiveness is complete self-absorption. Love always requires it to be about two people. Obsessiveness is boring, lopsided and so selfish, because you decide that although his/her words were no, she/he looked at me with a yes. Obsessiveness is a whole lot of pretending about the other person’s feelings. Obsessiveness also means you all too easily dismiss your own behaviour – are you drinking every night or giving into sex every date because that keeps the pretending alive, that there is a relationship?

Most relationships start off with one person who is more interested in the other. Obsessiveness is trying to create a certainty where there is none. Relationships by their nature are all about uncertainty. Obsessiveness is like Cinderella’s step-sister trying to stuff her foot in the too small glass slipper; “I’ve never seen this shoe in my life but I’m determined the Prince will by mine.” obsessiveness insists, decides and pushes for what that person wants regardless of what the other person feels, thinks or wants.

Obsessiveness is driving your car to the street they live on and watching for other people. If you do that more than once, it’s called stalking. The opposite of obsessiveness is embracing uncertainty and coping with what happens and letting go of deciding you know what’s best for both of you. Accepting the harsh reality that the other person does not feel the same way about you.

Iris Murdoch wrote a fictional novel called The Sea, The Sea. Read it and experience exactly how tiresome the obsessiveness of the main character is and how he really has no clue, who the woman he kidnaps is. His demand that his point of view is the only one that matters actually has the same tone as the suicide bombers who flew the planes into the World Trade Center. Most fundamental zealots are obsessive in the attitude that complete adherence to their religion is the only way to live. Kathy Bates plays an obsessive, who kidnaps the romance author she “loves” in the movie Misery. While Kathy’s character is over the top in this portrayal, it will give you a glimpse of how obsessiveness creates its own twisted silent certainty. While obsessiveness demands and denies, love asks and risks finding out how the other person really feels and is willing to cope with rejection.

The Crone, visited last night by a Vampire and two of his faceless friends, found

herself in conversation with the undead. ” It’s bad being a vampire” said the toothy terror ” You live forever”

“Yes” said the Crone ” And that probably means you’ll be in school forever and of course you can’t kiss anyone” (The Crone has seen the first Twilight movie, and knows this is a big concern for teen vampires and those poor mortals who like the look of them)

“You can’t see if I’m crying” said the Faceless One and Scream let out a terrible scream.

The conversation then turned to the new

Twilight movie which will premiere on

Thanksgiving weekend. Rapunzel and

Gretel have already pre-booked their tickets and the Crone was interested to discover if the movie held the same appeal for teenage boys, particularly those with a proclivity for horror.

“They think it’s stupid” said the Vampire, gesturing to Scream and the Faceless One, but I call it an opportunity–all those girls” and with that he let out a sinister laugh

and left to flash his sharp-toothed smile at the rest of Itchy Ankle.

 Post Halloween Housekeeping Tip:

The Crone last night was wearing a rather lovely grey linen shift to offset her purple and orange witches hat. The yard was decorated with candles, including a delightful candle-laden chandelier.

In the process of dismantling the outdoor decoration, the Crone splashed wax on her shift. As this is a common Halloween occurence, and one the Crone has suffered before, she hopes it may be useful to share the solution to the problem with you.

Should you spill wax on fabric, let it harden and then place the garment or tablecloth or whatever on an ironing board, wax side up. Put a piece of brown paper–a shopping bag or parcel paper on top of the spot, then use a warm iron on top of the paper. The wax melts and soaks into the paper and Voila! problem solved.

Now regular readers of the Crone’s ramblings will know that she is no Heloise so how does she know this handy household tip? It is a piece of intelligence that has stayed with her since Halloween 1972 when, aged 12, she wore her new maxi coat (size 10 from C&A) to go door to door in her Belfast neighborhood in Northern Ireland.

That was before pumpkins reached Ireland and so children carved turnips or rutabagas to make their lanterns. Or maybe there were pumpkins there all along but Presbyterian families just persevered with turnips as some kind of puritanical punishment? Anyhow, children risked life and climb taking carving knifes to rock hard root vegetables and it’s a wonder that the Crone’s hands don’t still bear the calluses from scooping out the cold wet pale turnip center with a spoon ( “Don’t bend my good spoon”) 

Once the turnips were carved and lit–long candles placed into a holding hole in the base of the turnip and then sealed around with wax–kids would go from door to door. There was no trick or treating in those days. You had to offer to sing or perform some other party piece for your neighbors who mostly, wisely, handed over some pennies, sometimes a 10p piece, to get you to go away. Candy wasn’t part of it.

Anyhow, on this particular Halloween in 1972 the Crone’s lantern sprung a leak, dripping wax all down the front of her new double-breasted, rust-colored coat. The Crone thought she’d be killed–the coat was brand new and meant for church on Sunday–and started trying to pick it off with her thumbnail, a mistake as with the wax came lumps of the felted surface of the coat. There was nothing for it but to confess–and to the Crone’s surprise her father took the news calmly, having a piece of brown paper and a hot iron to hand. Perhaps he’d once survived a Halloween mishap or two himself?

If the Blarney Crone was writing the definitive Irish novel you would expect to be moving about between different locations and time periods but on a humble blog a certain simple respect for a linear chronology is usually expected. Sorry. For now, we remain in Itchy Ankle but have come bang up to date. In posts to follow, there will be more news of the Cackler and her exploits and some deep history as the Crone attempts to catch you up with events at Transparency Towers.  But first, Halloween 2009: The green-haired ghoul  is Rapunzel, bewitching niece of Hansel and Gretel and the rest are trick or treaters who stopped by.

Rapunzel by Paul O. Zelinsky

What a book! The kind of book that makes one want to reach out and absorb its’ richness. The kind of book that reaches out and takes one in to explore its’ delights. The Caldecott is awarded to the best illustrated children’s book each year. Paul Zelinsky, another author/illustrator I have had the immense pleasure of listening to, watching draw, and talking with truly deserves the Caldecott Medal for Rapunzel. The amount of research he put into both the art and story history is incredible. Most of us are familiar with the rather harsh Brothers Grimm version of the tale where the cruel witch punishes the husband for stealing greens from her garden to satisfy his pregnant wife’s cravings by taking their newborn child. Rapunzel is usually portrayed living a lonely and miserable life in a barren tower in a foreboding and deserted part of the world until she meets the prince. The witch catches the pair and pitches the prince out of the tower causing him to become blind and doomed to wander about the wilderness until Rapunzel escapes the evil witch’s clutches and saves the prince with her tears of joy.

Well, toss that version out of the closest tower. Rapunzel has her earliest roots in seventeenth century Italy as Petrosinella. Then she appeared as Persinette in the French writer La Force’s Tale of Tales. The first German translation was included in a 1790 collection, Kleinen Romane, written by Joachim Schulz. The Grimm brothers, however, attributed Rapunzel to an oral tale in their first collection published in 1812. Mr. Zelinsky tells us in his epilogue that he tried to combine the most moving aspects of the story with the most satisfying structure and the three countries of its’ origin in its’ illustrations. I think he succeeded admirably. In his retelling of the story, there is still a man and wife who finally conceive a child. The wife develops a craving for some rapunzel from the garden of the sorceress who lives beside them. The husband braves the sorceress to steal some rapunzel from her garden. On his second attempt, the man is caught. When the sorceress finds out why he needs the rapunzel she allows the husband to take as much as he wants but he must allow her to take the child when it is born. In order to save his beloved wife he accedes to the sorceress’s request.

As promised, the sorceress appears at the birth of the baby girl, names her Rapunzel and leaves cradling her gently in her arms with a look of profound love on her face. The sorceress is kind to Rapunzel, and we are shown a picture of a happy, dancing little girl being lovingly watched over by the sorceress. When Rapunzel reaches the age of twelve, she is then led by the sorceress to an elegant tower in lush woods yet no entrance so the sorceress can keep Rapunzel for herself.

Years pass and one day a king’s son wanders by and hears Rapunzel singing. He learns the trick of getting into the tower by means of Rapunzel’s long hair. (I was relieved to see that Mr. Zelinsky devised a hook to wind her hair around before anyone climbed on it. That always bothered me as a child.) They fall in love, but unlike in the Brothers Grimm version, they marry. The sorceress finds out about the deception when Rapunzel asks for help fastening her dress that no longer fits because she is with child. The sorceress is enraged and profoundly disappointed. She cuts off Rapunzel’s hair, with a look of sorrow and banishes her to the wilderness where Rapunzel gives birth to twins.

The sorceress fastens Rapunzel’s hair to the hook so when the prince comes for his nightly visit she can confront him. If she can’t have Rapunzel, then nobody can. He is so struck with grief at the news of Rapunzel’s disappearance, he lets go and falls instead of being pushed by a cruel witch as in the Grimms’ story. He is blinded with grief and stumbles through the same wilderness as Rapunzel and the twins. Finally, one day he hears Rapunzel’s voice. Her tears of joy cure his blindness. He not only gets to gaze upon his twins for the first time, but he also sees that they are near his kingdom where they go to live a long and happy life.

Although Mr. Zelinsky says he felt humbled by the experience of attempting Italian Renaissance painting, every time I turned a page I felt as though I were back in Art History class seeing the works of Raphael, Titian, Michaelangelo and Leonardo Da Vinci. In fact, Rapunzel herself reminds me of Botticelli’s Venus.

Zelinsky’s use of lush colors in rich, jewel tones; his minute detail in each illustration; his contrast of dark and light; his use of architectural images (note the sorceress’s garden); the glowing luminescence of skin tones all accurately reflect the style of Italian and French Renaissance art. Rapunzel’s tower is an intricate magical puzzle looking small on the outside but with spacious rooms on the inside.

Leonardo once said that the highest aim of painting is to depict the intention of man’s soul. Once again, I think Mr. Zelinsky has achieved this for his characters’ facial expressions are stunning. In one of the most beautiful illustrations where Rapunzel and the prince are marrying both faces truly show all of the love that each feels for the other. In another dazzling painting, we see in the sorceress’s face the fear of losing Rapunzel combined with her feelings of failure at keeping her beloved adopted daughter away from the world.

Paul Zelinsky’s Rapunzel is an illustrating and storytelling tour de force where the illustrations mesh with and enhance the narrative to combine as one marvelous work of art. To quote Mr. Zelinsky, “It would please me if my pictures served in some measure to spur an interest in the magnificent art form from which I have drawn. My great hope, of course, is that this book may give pleasure to readers in and of itself.” Mr. Zelinsky, congratulations. You have done it.
