Anyone for noodles?

There are many interpretations of “getting the itch” if you live in Thailand. It could be a desire for travel. It could be a mosquito bite. It could be a rash after eating some dodgy seafood. Or it could be an after-effect of indulging in some naughty nightlife.

So I wasn’t too concerned when an itchy red bump appeared on the side of my foot early last week. It looked and felt just like a mosquito bite, of which I have had thousands in my life. By now, I can even resist the temptation to scratch.

I was a bit concerned, however, when the next morning I noticed my mosquito bite had grown a tail. Further concern ensured when the “tail” had doubled in length by the time I finished work, so I went to see a doctor.

As it was just a walk-in appointment, I saw GP rather than a specialist, so he couldn’t confirm what it was. He gave me an antihistamine cream and told me to go back and see a specialist if it handed cleared up two days later.

Two days later, I had two snaking, red lines growing out of the original “bite” and I didn’t need to be or see a specialist to make a good guess about what it was.

Worms.

The specialist confirmed this. He didn’t do any tests to determine exactly which kind of worm, but that it was worms was obvious. He froze the “bite” – evidently the entry point and/or eggs site – with liquid nitrogen and prescribed Albendazole tablets to kill those two worms and any that I may have internally.

A day later, progression of the tracks had ceased, two days later itching had stopped, and from then the lines started fading, so hopefully that means the treatment has done its job.

So, in all, not an overly distressing or disabling experience, but certainly an unpleasant thought to have wriggling things beneath your skin and feeding from your flesh. For all the advantages life in the tropics has over life in grey old Blighty, being a host body for squirming parasites isn’t one of them!

In 2004, if I remember correctly, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. That was the year my husband

In 2004, if I remember correctly, I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism. That was the year my husband and I were married. In January, I started getting this small rash at the base of my neck on the right side and occasionally it would show up on the left but never got as large as the right side did. I also was complaining of being tired (fatigued) all the time. I went to my family physician about the rash and he thought it may have been some kind of allergic reaction to something. So he gave me a cream to put on it and it went away. It would show back up periodically, but the cream always worked to relieve it. I got married in June and a few months after the wedding, one of my older sisters mentioned knowing someone who had complained of the same kind of rash and of being fatigued regularly. She told me that her friend had been diagnosed with hypothyroidism and she thought I should ask my doctor about it.

So I made an appointment and had some blood work done and, sure enough, my T4 thyroid hormone was a little low. I was prescribed Synthroid and through out the next 4 years the dose changed a few times but I still always had the symptoms of hypothyroidism: fatigue, hair loss, forgetfulness, depression, dry skin, cold-intolerance, weight issues, etc. It never dawned on me that there might be something else wrong and, apparently, it never occurred to my doctor either.

In 2008, my husband and I had decided that we wanted to try and have a baby. So I got off of my birth control, but we chose to just let things play out naturally. We weren’t really “trying” but we weren’t preventing anything either. No luck. So this past summer we decided to get serious about trying so I checked with my doctor about seeing an endocrinologist about my hypothyroidism because it can cause issues with getting pregnant and in pregnancy itself. He agreed and recommended Dr Rapp at Little Rock Diagnostic Clinic. When they called me with the appointment information, I immediately had a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. I literally thought I was going to vomit when I hung up the phone with my family doctor. I told my mom and husband about my bad feeling and they said it was probably just nerves but it never would go away.

I just knew that something was wrong with me.

After my last post, the stripping and everything I did wasn’t effective. As soon as we went back to the cloth diapers, they immediately smelled of ammonia again. I started boiling and washing with dawn and rinsing eleventy billion times only to find out, they STILL stunk.

So, about 2 weeks ago, I called the local Twin Cities diaper service. They offer stripping services for 25 dollars. They pick your diapers up, take them back to their location, do the stripping and bring them back a week later. They don’t deliver in our area, but they go to my mom’s house, so we gave my mom the diapers to leave for them.

We got them back on Wednesday. And so far? NO STINK! I am so beyond happy. Changing her diaper no longer makes my nose burn and my eyes water. Her butt isn’t constantly red from the ammonia. The diapers look and smell totally CLEAN for the first time in a LOOOONG time. And it also means she can wear her cute wool again! Including the first pair of longies I’ve ever knit!

I think they’re awfully cute. And they go really well with her matching hudson hat.

1. Hair 2. Skin 3. Bone I’ve had all my hair cut off. I’ve worn it short for 20 years anyway, but

1. Hair

2. Skin

3. Bone

I’ve had all my hair cut off. I’ve worn it short for 20 years anyway, but recently I grew it. A bit. It went wavy. Straight-haired, don’t-care-if-it’s-raining me. It went fluffy at the ends. I couldn’t do anything with it. On holiday, The Man said it was horrible. Now I am elfin, and he likes it again. What a relief. “What conditioner do you use?” asked the Shampoo Girl. ”Hedrin,” I didn’t say. Lifestyle Guru Hairdresser has spent two years tut-tutting over the straw on my head and reassuring me that Hair Changes When You’re Pregnant. This time she sprayed my head with Instant Stand-Back Defibrillating Deep Impact Conditioner. At least I hope that’s what it was. But the haircut’s great, the colour’s great… and I would be walking on air except for one thing…. Lifestyle Guru Hairdresser, who runs two salons, works full-time and has two sons aged 8 and 6, has finished her Christmas Shopping. And it’s wrapped.

Son 1 aged 5y 1m is much better but still droops if he’s not topped up with Calpol. The rash is still pver his neck, chest, stomach and back but it’s now faint pink. Now. All you consultant dermatologists and micro biologists reading this. His molluscum, which has been the grinding bane of my world for months and months and months, is clearing up. I have tried everything. Some of the things I have tried – neat tea tree oil – have made his skin even worse. He was allergic to it and he broke out in eczema. I tried to stop it spreading with every brand of skin sensitive plasters on them and he was allergic to them all. So his chest and tummy was peppered with horrible pustuley molluscum, and the skin between was raw with eczema. Over the last week the eczema is in retreat and the molluscum is healing over and shrinking. So what’s done that? The Strep bacteria or the penicillin? It’s got to be the bacteria, hasn’t it, because molluscum is a virus and we all know that Antibiotics Don’t Work On Viruses.

The other Good Thing about today was the weather in the afternoon. We had thundering rain and Force 10 winds overnight and this morning… and then, still windy, still cold, but the sun came out. We wheeled the boys into The Town, did one of our all-you-can-carry Tesco shops and came back again with not a drop of rain on us. Son 2 aged 2y 2m was exhausted and refused to sleep, which made him into my stalker over tea. Lamb shanks. The Man bought them. I cooked them. The Man had seconds. Son 2 ate three pieces. Son 1 chewed one, then stuck his tongue out downwards so the wodge fell off on to his plate. He ate thirds of broccoli in cheese sauce. ”Great,” said The Man. “I’m condemned to chicken and sausages for the rest of my life.”

For the last couple of nights I have not been able to sleep. I doze, then bam … I’m wide awake, toss and turn, get up, back to bed, etc,…. and repeat!

If you don’t know by now, my family is very country. This morning is the first day of deer season, and it shows. Where does it show? For some reason hubby changed his clothes in the kitchen, and his camo boxers are still there in the floor. I’m tired and cranky. I am so glad it’s not raining for them to track mud in on the new flooring.

I figure by dinner time this evening, someone in this house will attempt to thunk me in the head to get some sleep. When you’re cranky at even yourself you know you have to find a way to get some rest.

Bad thing is, I think I may have just figured out why I’m not able to sleep, or at least a contributing factor. I’m broke out in a rash. Again. This makes the 3rd time for this rash for me. 1st time was when I was first diagnosed with lyme disease and rocky mountain spotted fever. 2nd time was when I was re-infected with lyme, and rocky mountain spotted fever, and now. I know I haven’t had any ticks on my in quite some time, I’m sure of it! So wth is causing this rash? If this one follows course as the first 2, I’ll be covered and itching like a maniac by 10PM or so tonight. UGH!

If they give me steroids to clear the rash up, I know one thing for sure, I’ll have the house spotless. But pity the rest of the family because they make me super foul.

1. Red Eye

2. Red Alert

3. Red Roses

I’ve been up with Son 1 aged 5y 1m every night this week. He’s cried, he’s wanted water, he’s wanted squash, he’s needed Calpol, he’s been hot, he’s been cold, he’s climbed into bed with his Mum. Then last night, he slept like a stone, all the way through, and in the early hours of this morning was still in the same position he’d fallen asleep in. Me? Up since 0230. Doing Office emails at 0400. Crashed out at 6am, with two boys buzzing me. “EithergodownstairsandseeDaddy, orcomeintobedandgivemeacuddle,” I mumbled, closing my eyes. Son 2 aged 2y 2m pad-padded off, Son 1 clambered clumsily over the pillows. Little arms went around my neck. ”Son 1 gone downstair,” said a high, little voice in my ear. It was Son 2, and he was gorgeous.

The Office were strangely unenthusiastic about the presence of someone with a rattling loud cough, splashing sneezes and Scarlet Fever at home, and this afternoon I gave up and left early. I rang the Surgery for Son 1’s strep test result. Not back. Try again on Monday. No hurry there then. No wonder they whack the children straight onto antibiotics rather than wait for confirmation. Back home, Wonder Nanny said Son 1 had seemed much better today. He’d eaten well at lunchtime and said his throat wasn’t sore any more. His rash seems to be lighter too. It hasn’t gone – it’s still all over him, but it’s gone from being very red to pinky. He is itching his head like mad. Yes I have checked and checked and I don’t think it’s livestock. I wonder whether he’s got the rash on his scalp and the hair is irritating it.

“What about Son 2?” Everyone has asked. Bouncing around like Tigger. “Mummy come back work.” He needed to be picked up, to be cuddled, to be held. I had a pile of Office calls to take and make. Son 2 found it very difficult to keep away. He’s adorable. Lovely to tickle, to cuddle, to hold, to talk to, to hold hands with, to kiss. Even The Man sighed this evening “Son 2 is beautiful, isn’t he?” At bedtime, Son 1 has his bath; I read to Son 2. Then Son 2 has his bath, I get him out, he cuddles me, he lies on his back on the floor and pulls my face next to him, he fights me as I clean his teeth, he plays while I read him his dinosaur book, he lies in his cot and pulls me down to him so my face is next to his. I Have Never Been Loved Like This Before.

Tuesday morning we work on our routine of medications, removing the boot, lathering with ointment, putting on clean gauze and putting the boot back on. All before she gets dressed in clean PJs. We are both glad to see improvement on the rash already. She complains again about the pain in her heel. The boot’s off, we might as well take a look.

I’m not a doctor. I don’t even play one on TV. But I’m pretty sure that looks like the beginnings of a pressure sore. She has a dime sized area of white skin on her heel where the rest of the skin is a healthy pink. I tell her it was probably from her cast and should start feeling better now that the cast is off.

Sure, sounds good in theory, right? By that evening, poor Princess Girl is in agony. AGONY. I have her take a pain pill before we even start with her evening rash treatment. I give it a good half hour to kick in. I remove the boot. Her actual surgery site hurts. The rash is itchy and burning. The white, pressure sore, area on her heel is now the size of a half dollar. And really really sore. She says she has both a constant pain at a level 8 of 10 and a sharp stabbing type pain at a level 8 of 10 in that heel.

And here is where I start my rant. You can come back in a few minutes when it’s over if you don’t want to witness the mess.

Do you want to know where this pressure sore is on her heel? It is in the EXACT SPOT where the dent in the cast was. You know the one we went to the office to have them look at. The one they said was NOT caused by her passing out and falling. And the reason they knew it was not from her fall? BECAUSE THEY PUT IT THERE ON PURPOSE!! And then ignored me when I thought it might cause an issue. Do you have any idea what I would like to say to her physician right now? Or to the site supervisor? Yeah, it would not be pretty.

Now that I’ve gotten that off my chest…

An hour and a half after taking the pain pill she is crying and still at a pain level of 8 of 10 for both issues on her heel. Her surgery site is a 6. Her rash is itching and burning. I do what any self-respecting mom would do. I gave her another pain pill. Keep in mind Princess Girl only weighs about 95 pounds.

Within an hour her eyes were getting glassy. She was rubbing her eyes. Her pain level had not gone down, but she was nearing a coma state. I tucked her into bed and let her enjoy a drug induced full night’s sleep.

We have to be nearing the end of this journey, don’t we?

1. Blotches 2. Does Your Child? 3. A Shade Different Not a Good Night. Poor old Son 1 aged 5y 1m

1. Blotches

2. Does Your Child?

3. A Shade Different

Not a Good Night. Poor old Son 1 aged 5y 1m came in at 0230, and I had very little sleep after that. I went downstairs at 4, and then got up at 6, with Son 1 pad-pad-padding down behind me. One Wednesday Friend – the Booming Businesswoman – is away in South Africa, doing Very Well without the children. The other texted. Swimming? Nah. Can’t really. I have Son 1 as well as Son 2 aged 2y 2m. He’s off school with a sore throat. She would go swimming, we decided, and we three would see her in the cafe afterwards. I made lunch. I loaded the Big Pram into the car. I loaded all the bags into the car. At about 1015, for some reason I still can’t remember, I checked Son 1’s tummy. There was a rash. Red. Not even a rash, particularly. Just big blotches and patches of red. Nah, not red. Pink. Too faint for red. Nope. Not faint. There. Inescapable. And, come to think of it, if we’re honest, and not trying to make the least of something, it’s red. Red. At his neck. Under his ears. On his chest. On his tummy. I kept peering at him. He kept protesting.

I got my Book out. Rashes With Fever. Does Your Child Have A Fever? Yes. Is the rash red, widespread, and vanishes when pressed? Yes. Does Your Child Have A Sore Throat? Yes. = Scarlet Fever. See Your Doctor. I looked at Son 1. I looked at The Rash. I looked at The Book. I looked at The Rash. I rang the Doctor. The receptionist was vaguely interested. “There’s only emergency appointments left. Is it an emergency?” “Well… he’s got a sore throat, a fever and a rash, and I’d like him someone to look at him today.” ”Four Fifteen. You’ll have to come and wait.” “That’s fine.” “So it’s sore throat and fever? His symptoms?” “And The Rash. On his neck. And his body.” “Could you please just excuse me. I’m putting you on hold. ” I tum ti tummed. “Sorry, I can’t get the Duty Doctor. Can he ring you back?” Of course he can. He rang. ”Bring him in now, I’ll have a look at him between appointments.”

“Open wide. Say Aaaah. He’s got white spots on his throat and palate. Rashes are hard… that could be viral.. or… what’s his highest temperature been?” “37.9. And 38 last night, but that was when he was in bed with all his covers on so I didn’t think it counted. But I don’t really do temperatures. I’ve just been giving him Calpol and Ibuprofen to help him when he’s clearly too hot.” “Over 38 is probably an infection. What do you think it is? Scarlet Fever?” ”Well,” I said. “I’ve got this Book. And it says fever, sore throat and rash = Scarlet Fever. And we’ve been on holiday so he’s been on a plane. And we spent a lot of time in a Spa Bath, and I’ve read somewhere they’re high risk for Scarlet Fever… and… if you tell me it’s not, I’ll be happy.” “It’s not one of those where you take chances,” he said, swabbing Son 1’s cheek. “Usually, if there’s any doubt, you don’t give children antibiotics. Except for suspected Strep, when you do. ” The printer buzzed. ”No school till at least a day after the rash goes and his temperature is normal. No mixing with other children till you’ve had a clear day.” “What about Son 2?” I asked. “Oh if he’s getting it, he’s got it. Ring on Friday for the Swab result.” Outside, I rang The Man. I told the people we’d been with over the last few days. Only suspected, I said. Could still be viral. Yes, he did…er.. go red before my very eyes. At home, the boys watched telly. I made tea. Son 1 couldn’t eat any. At bedtime, I took off his top to put him in the shower. His back was shiny, coated in the rash. No white bits. And I’ve kind of hunted here and there for the right word to describe the shade. Deep red? Crimson? Nah, a just a few shades pinker. Vermilion? A bit too orangey. Scarlet. Definitely scarlet.

Friday was more of the same from Thursday. Itchy. Elevated. Only now we were tired, too, from a night of interrupted sleep. But our spirits were good. Princess Girl worked on homework while I worked.

Friday night I was looking forward to a good, long, uninterrupted night’s sleep. Princess Girl was too. We were both very tired. At bed time her leg was itching and burning badly. I broke out the hair dryer, set it on cool and aimed it down her cast. That helped some. Although she was disappointed the cool air did not reach all the way down her cast.

At one AM, the crutch was pounding on the floor. Princess Girl was in tears. The itching and burning were so bad they woke her up. I tried to calm her. I lay with her for a while. Every few minutes her entire body tensed in pain due to the burning rash neither of us could reach. I took her in my arms and whispered to her like I used to when she was a baby. She finally quieted and fell back to sleep.

At two-thirty AM, the crutch, again. This time Princess Girl was in near hysterics. The itching and burning had woken her up again. The pain level of the burning was an eight out of ten. I tried the hair dryer trick again. It helped some. I crawled into bed with her again to try to quiet her. Her convulsing body was breaking my heart. Finally, she fell back to sleep. I decided it was easier to stay were I was.

At six AM, she did not have to use the crutch. I was already there when the itching and burning woke her for the third time. We went through the whole routine a third time. She fell back to sleep and I got up for the day. About an hour later she woke for the day, too.

Saturday morning was VERY crabby. We had been cooped up together non-stop for five days. We were both tired. I tried to take on a household project that was not going well. She was itchy. I had to make an executive decision. I forced both of us to go to bed and take a nap. An hour later we both felt refreshed, at least as far as sleep went. When Princess Girl got up from her nap I took a fresh peek at her rash. Instead of getting better, it was worse. A lot worse.

We had to go to the Convenient Care. The doctor diagnosed an allergic reaction to something used to prep her for surgery. He prescribed a stronger cortisone cream and oral benadryl. And follow up with the surgeon on Monday. Great.

I cannot express how happy I am that the prescription and benadryl are helping immensely on the rash on the outside of her cast. The benadryl even seems to be quieting the inside rash some. I also cannot express how pointless I believe the call to the surgeon will be on Monday.

Thursday morning dawned. I was sitting at the computer desk working when Princess Girl called down and asked if I was awake. I went upstairs to help her get out of bed and through her morning routine. I was delighted to hear she was not feeling the least bit dizzy.

She was, however, feeling itchy. Huh? ‘On my leg mom. It itches really bad.’ She pulls her pajama pant leg up to her thigh. ‘Look.’

Oh great. She has a rash emerging from the top of her cast. It covers the entire circumference of her knee. And there is a lovely streak shooting straight up the center of the back of her thigh. She says it goes all the way down inside her cast too. I cover it with dry gauze and tell her to be tough. There is not one thing we can do about the itchies inside her cast. A couple times throughout the day I put hydrocortisone on the rash, but it doesn’t really seem to help.

Overall, it’s a pretty quiet day. She keeps her foot elevated. I cook and clean and swab the decks. Or at least deliver her lunch to her and help her into the bathroom periodically.

At midnight I awake to what I thought was a crash. Fortunately, it was only PG pounding on the floor above my head with her crutch. Her leg is very swollen inside the cast; she is in a lot of pain. I get her re-situated. We prop that leg WAY over her heart. I lay with her for a while to calm her. To make sure her pain is starting to ease. Then I head back down the stairs to my own room, my own bed.

In my groggy state, I somehow misjudge where I am on the stairs. I think I’m at the bottom when in reality I am still one stair up. I feel myself floating briefly in the air before gravity takes over and I sprawl face first on the living room floor. Dear God. Is anything broken? Can I move? Crap that’s going to hurt tomorrow. Ow, that hurts right now! I limp, shuffle, crawl to my bed.

4 AM. It’s that damn pounding waking me up again. Who keeps doing that? A few more seconds awake and, oh crap. It’s Princess Girl. She sounds very distressed. I rush up the stairs. In her groggy state, she tried to get up and walk to the bathroom. She only made one step before the pain showed her the error of her ways. Now she can feel her heart beat in her ankle. I get her re-situated, again. I lay with her for a while, again. This time when I head back down the stairs I am painfully careful of each of my steps.

Thankfully we both managed to sleep for what was left of the night.
