If you’re looking for something weird and fun to do with your photos, I’ve got a cool trick for you.

It’s called rasterizing. I think.

Here’s what it does. It cuts your picture into tiny little squares and then rounds those squares into circles. (Not the official definition.)

HUH?

Maybe I should just show you.

Begin with a photo.

I think it works best with really active shots, but we’ll try this one.

Take a click over to www.homokaasu.org/rasterbator. Don’t let the name throw you off. It sounds foul, but it’s just an attention grabber.

Before you can rasterize your image, it needs to be in a file size smaller that 1MB. If you have Photoshop, click File>Save for Web. About half-way down the page, you’ll see constrain proportions and a percent box. Change that percent down and click apply until you get under 1MB.

Then upload your image to the rasterbator.

After the image has uploaded, you’ll have the option of cropping it. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see two buttons “Crop” and “Size”. Crop indicates the size/proportions of the image. Size means the size of what you are about to create.

And what exactly am I creating? A multi-page image you print on your home printer. I suppose you could send it to a digital photo lab, but the cool thing about the rasterbator is you can make HUGE images for free.

Well, almost free. You still have to buy computer paper and printer ink.

When you click on size, you can resize your image in the little grid. Here, my image is four grid spaces high by four grid spaces wide. That’s four by four print papers–sixteen papers.

At 8 1/2 by 11, that makes this a 34″ by 44″ photo. Almost three feet by four feet! That’s big.

The next screen will ask you to set your preferences for color and dot size. I chose the color option that uses the median color for each dot. That makes the least amount of change to the image. Black and white is cool too, though.

For dot size, I used the smallest, 7mm. This will give you the least amount of distortion.

I’d have to print the thing and photograph it to show you the result and this was just for illustrative purposes only. . .so I did it again making it one page this time.

The result is quite distorted.

The larger the output image is, the smaller piece of your picture each dot is, therefore less distortion. With the image only one page in size, the dots were a fairly big piece of the image so it looks dotty.

But if I had done sixteen pages, you would be able to clearly see the picture.

If that makes any sense.

Okay, Lady, what do I do with sixteen computer papers?

Glad you asked. You can paste them all to a board, foam core, or the wall. Or, you can buy sixteen of those document frames with hardly any frame and hang them super close to make one wall collage image.

My friend did this in her daughter’s room with a super cool cheerleading picture. This one.

Imagine walking in to the little girls room and seeing a huge wall image of that. It’s totally rockin’.

Maybe I can talk her in to taking a picture of the wall and sharing it with me through Flickr or Shutterfly. Then I can add it to this post.

Eh?

Maybe?

We’d love to see it.

Pretty please. . .

It’s important to note, if you’re going to use the letter sized frames, you should crop the picture to fill only the pages. Notice in mine it used sixteen pages but it was only on a small strip of the last four pages. I could have cropped it to be only twelve pages without really changing the size.

Clear as mud?

Have fun photo-fiddling.

UPDATE!

Yay! Look, I talked her into sharing. This is what a rasterized, framed image can look like on the wall.

Totally Cool!

You can see that from a distance it looks like a poster. But it’s SO much cheaper, and frankly more awesome, than a poster print of that size.

Thanks for sharing, Coco!

“Picture Books – The Illustrator’s Process”

Since I began promoting myself in the area of Children’s Book Illustration, I have had a number of people inquire about providing illustrations for their “book that they have written and always wanted to publish”. I decided to put together some resource information for this month’s topic to shed some light on the process a picture book illustrator may go through.

I hope to also dispell the myth that as a writer you need to hire an artist and have the illustrations completed to submit along with your written manuscript. Here’s what I tell people that ask me about illustrating a book they are interested in getting published… “Send the manuscript to the publisher, without illustrations. It will be judged on it’s own merit and if the publisher is interested, they will find an illustrator that fits the project, …that’s just how it’s done”.

Instead of going into any more detail, there is a great article on that subject here at Harold Underdown’s site, The Purple Crayon

Since publishers are looking to match-up illustrators with manuscripts that they like, an illustration project for a picture book will most-likely come directly from an editor or art director at a publishing house. The publisher may send a manuscript to several illustrators at the same time and ask for a sample page or two in order to select the exact style they are looking for. At that point they will narrow their selection down to one illustrator.

From the Illustrator’s side…

Once they decide on an illustrator, a contract is drawn up between the illustrator and publisher containing details of due dates, royalties, etc. If you don’t have an agent working with you on this it is a good idea to have an IP, (intelectual property) attorney take a look at it for you. Once all the legal stuff is out of the way the illustrator starts sketching and preparing a sketch “dummy” of the book. It’s a rough mini-version of the book page layout. This helps to see how the book flows from page to page and helps in laying out color and text position. Make sure to check with the publisher for specifics on the book size dimensions and how many pages, etc. Typically that is around 28-32 pages with between 500-800 words for a picture book, (max is 1000). Rough sketches of the page spreads are submitted to the publisher first before any color work is started. Once you get the go-ahead on the sketches, it’s time to add the color. Here is a bit more information and sample layout of the pages for a picture book from Kathy Temean’s blog.

Personally, I like to add one more step in there and do a “color” rough that shows the publisher what you have in mind. The color mock up shown at the beginning of this article was put together using print-outs of the color roughs that were sent to the publisher. I use this mock up, (complete with numbered pages) throughout the entire time I am working on the final illustrations in order to keep everything organized. Once the illustrations are finalized and sent to the publisher, you can be sure there will be some changes, (much easier to do if you are working digitally). The publisher then produces the book, usually within about 6 months to a year. You can be sure I will post the announcement here when “A Sweater for Duncan” is released next Fall.

In todays lecture we took another look at colour schemes within the colour wheel and file formats.

Vector Graphics use points/lines/ curves based mathematical equations in graphics. The file can then be scaled to any size without compromising the quality of the image.

Jpegs are are resolution dependent. They are bitmapped/rastered images made up of pixels in a grid. As they are just a collection of squares - in contrast to Vector Graphics, the edges will become jagged when scaled up (or down).

Our lab session was an introduction to the amazing Photoshop, to learn the basics – mainly the selection tools.

So photoshop is a a graphic editing program… what can you do with Photoshop? Well what can’t you do with photoshop would be more apt! Check out the link for a sample!

Amazing photoshopped images!

Another sample of a photo manipulation using photoshop.

Certainly inspires me to learn the techniques needed for creating surreal composite images!

In this assignment you will create some raster layers, use Map Algebra to isolate cells that have particular characteristics and use Kriging to interpolate a surface based on point data.

Instructions

Click on Start > Network Drives > Geography 563

Copy the entire Richland_DEM folder from the Assignment 7 folder to the local hard disk or a flash drive. This is a pretty big raster file (about 30mb), so make sure wherever you’re putting it has enough space. Also copy the ‘Rich_landcover.shp’, ‘Rich_highschools.shp’, ’sccounties.shp’, and ‘SCWeather.shp’ files.

Convert Land Cover to Raster

Launch ArcMap and add Rich_landcover.shp to the map. Activate the Spatial Analyst extension (go to Tools > Extensions… and check the box next to Spatial Analyst).

The land cover layer stores the type of land use or cover in two ways: a single digit field called LEVEL1 that breaks down land cover into nine categories, and a two digit field called CODE which breaks down the type of land use/cover in more detail. See the table below for details on each type of land use/cover.

9 Perennial snow ice 91 Perennial snowfields

92 Glaciers

Activate ArcToolbox and use the Feature to Raster tool (Conversion Tools > To Raster > Feature to Raster) to create two raster layers based on the landcover shapefile. Name the first one level1 and base it on the “LEVEL1″ field. Use a 100 meter cell size. Name the second one level2 and base it on the “CODE” field

Select High Altitude Forest Cells

Add the richland_dem layer to the map. Activate the Single Output Map Algebra tool (Spatial Analyst Tools > Map Algebra > Single Output Map Algebra).

The goal here is to create a new layer that has all the cells that are forest in the level1 land cover raster and are over 500 feet according to the DEM. To do this use the Map Algebra CON command. The CON command is basically an IF statement. The syntax is:

CON (<condition>, <value if true>, <value if false>)

To create a new raster that meets two conditions (the cell is forest and it’s over 500 feet) use the “&” opearator to combine the two conditions. Since we don’t care about cells with forest or under 500 feet, we can just leave out the <value if false> portion. This gives us the following command:

CON ([level1 layer]==4 & [richaland_dem]>500, 1)

Substitute the full file path of your level1 and richland_dem layers for [level1 layer] and [richaland_dem] (rather than typing this in you can just click on the folder button next to the Map Algebra expression box and it will automatically fill in the expression for you). Change the name of the output to something meaningful, but be aware that you can’t give rasters names longer than 13 characters.

Right click on the resultant layer and open the attribute table. Write down how many cells have forest and are over 500 feet.

Create Thiessen Polygons

Add the Rich_highschools shapefile to the map. Use the Create Thissen Polygons tool to create Thiessen Polygons around each high school (Analysis Tools > Proximity > Create Thiessen Polygons). Set the Output Fields dropdown to “ALL”.

Use the Feature to Raster tool to convert the Thiessen polygons to a raster. Choose “NAME” for the field and set the output cell size to 100.

Use the Single Output Raster tool and the CON command to create a new raster which includes only the Thiessen polygon cells which have the residential land use.

CON ([level2 layer]==11, [Thiessen polygon raster])

Right click on the new layer and open the attribute table. Write down how many residential cells are inside the Thiessen polygon of W J Kennan High School.

Kriging

Start a new copy of ArcMap and add sccounties.shp and SCWeather.shp to the map. Use the Kriging tool (Spatial Analyst Tools > Interpolation > Kriging) to create a raster layer showing the precipitation across the state. Choose “PRECIP” under the Z value field, give the new raster a sensible name, and keep the defaults for all the other settings.

Choose an asthetically pleasing color scheme and create a map showing precipitation throughout the state using the interpolation you just created. Export the map as a .pdf, using your name as the filename so I will know who’s it is.

What to Turn In

Send me an e-mail with “Assignment 7″ in the subject line. Attach your precipitation map. Include the following information in the body of the e-mail.

How many grid cells are forested and over 500 feet elevation?

How many residential cells are inside the Thiessen polygon of W J Kennan High School?

How You Will Be Graded

The land cover portions of the assignment will be graded based on the accuracy of your answers. The Kriging portion will be graded on the accuracy of your output raster an the asthetics of your map.

Due Date

This assignment is due on Thursday, October 29th at the beginning of class. Any assignments turned in after that moment will be given only half credit.
