You like that picture on your computer. but you want to put it on your wall. Wait. You want it to CO

You like that picture on your computer. but you want to put it on your wall. Wait. You want it to COVER the wall. But, it’s too expansive to print on big paper at kinkos, etc., etc. So what do you do? You use an online tool called the rasterbator. This great tool will simply take your image and make the pixels big dots. The size of the dot will depend on brightness of the poto and how big you want it to be.

To use to this online tool, just click HERE, upload your image, crop if desired, size to the number of pages you want it to be, SELECT MULTI-COLOR ON THE NEXT PAGE, and download and print the PDF. Well, then of course there’s cutting it and putting it together, etc.

So originally I had a big picture of the aple logo that was screddd and hanging from my door, shown below.

Old Entry...

But I was getting very bored of it.

So I had just made my new logo, and I decided that I should create an entry thing with my logo. I was having some problems with the software I had previously used, so I used the rasterbator this time. Below is the image I uploaded to the rasterbator.

Original Image

As you can see, it’s simply two of my logos on top of each other.

So after downloading the PDF I printed it out (turned out to be about 30 pages) and put it together… with nothing but scissors and Scotch tape. This is quite the challenge as with a normal printer there will be a border, which you have to find a way to fold over.

After piecing it I did what needed to be done: I cut the whole thing in to strips EXCEPT FOR THE TOP. Then, I simply hung it above my door and this is what I got.

New Entry

As you can tell, this one hangs much mower than the old entry, and in a cose-up, you an see how this tool really fit it to this big of a size.

Pixels to dots

The rasterbator did just what I said it would do – pixels to dots. The brightr, the smaller the dot (as more white will appear). And of course, the bigger you want the picture, the bigger the dot.

But some people go REALLY far with this thing.

Whow...

If you’re looking for something weird and fun to do with your photos, I’ve got a cool tr

If you’re looking for something weird and fun to do with your photos, I’ve got a cool trick for you.

It’s called rasterizing. I think.

Here’s what it does. It cuts your picture into tiny little squares and then rounds those squares into circles. (Not the official definition.)

HUH?

Maybe I should just show you.

Begin with a photo.

I think it works best with really active shots, but we’ll try this one.

Take a click over to www.homokaasu.org/rasterbator. Don’t let the name throw you off. It sounds foul, but it’s just an attention grabber.

Before you can rasterize your image, it needs to be in a file size smaller that 1MB. If you have Photoshop, click File>Save for Web. About half-way down the page, you’ll see constrain proportions and a percent box. Change that percent down and click apply until you get under 1MB.

Then upload your image to the rasterbator.

After the image has uploaded, you’ll have the option of cropping it. On the right side of the screen, you’ll see two buttons “Crop” and “Size”. Crop indicates the size/proportions of the image. Size means the size of what you are about to create.

And what exactly am I creating? A multi-page image you print on your home printer. I suppose you could send it to a digital photo lab, but the cool thing about the rasterbator is you can make HUGE images for free.

Well, almost free. You still have to buy computer paper and printer ink.

When you click on size, you can resize your image in the little grid. Here, my image is four grid spaces high by four grid spaces wide. That’s four by four print papers–sixteen papers.

At 8 1/2 by 11, that makes this a 34″ by 44″ photo. Almost three feet by four feet! That’s big.

The next screen will ask you to set your preferences for color and dot size. I chose the color option that uses the median color for each dot. That makes the least amount of change to the image. Black and white is cool too, though.

For dot size, I used the smallest, 7mm. This will give you the least amount of distortion.

I’d have to print the thing and photograph it to show you the result and this was just for illustrative purposes only. . .so I did it again making it one page this time.

The result is quite distorted.

The larger the output image is, the smaller piece of your picture each dot is, therefore less distortion. With the image only one page in size, the dots were a fairly big piece of the image so it looks dotty.

But if I had done sixteen pages, you would be able to clearly see the picture.

If that makes any sense.

Okay, Lady, what do I do with sixteen computer papers?

Glad you asked. You can paste them all to a board, foam core, or the wall. Or, you can buy sixteen of those document frames with hardly any frame and hang them super close to make one wall collage image.

My friend did this in her daughter’s room with a super cool cheerleading picture. This one.

Imagine walking in to the little girls room and seeing a huge wall image of that. It’s totally rockin’.

Maybe I can talk her in to taking a picture of the wall and sharing it with me through Flickr or Shutterfly. Then I can add it to this post.

Eh?

Maybe?

We’d love to see it.

Pretty please. . .

It’s important to note, if you’re going to use the letter sized frames, you should crop the picture to fill only the pages. Notice in mine it used sixteen pages but it was only on a small strip of the last four pages. I could have cropped it to be only twelve pages without really changing the size.

Clear as mud?

Have fun photo-fiddling.

UPDATE!

Yay! Look, I talked her into sharing. This is what a rasterized, framed image can look like on the wall.

Totally Cool!

You can see that from a distance it looks like a poster. But it’s SO much cheaper, and frankly more awesome, than a poster print of that size.

Thanks for sharing, Coco!

One fine day on teh internets, I came across a program called the Rasterbator. It takes any image you upload [less than 1MB] and blows it up any size you want. A wizard guides you through the process step by step. When you’re done, it sends you a pdf file of your image, blown up and made out of dots. A perfect site for all the otaku out there who don’t have money for all the posters they want. I made mine 9 sheets of paper square and posted it up on my door. I chose the 7mm size of the dots and ended up having to color it in with crayon.

Tips-Use the 10mm dot size. You don’t want to waste time coloring it in with crayon.

-Don’t use a character wearing white. It will blend into the paper.

And in other news:

We’ve gotten searches for a kagamine fansite that took people here, when we’re not a kagamine fansite anymore. [see last post] I’m going to take all the “Rin and Len Kagamine Fansite” links off of the videos, which will mean less visits but at least people won’t be confused when they see posts here that have nothing to do with the Kagamines.

A mi resulta realmente interesante, probadlo y comentad.

While surfing the net; I came across this program called Rasterbator; this lets you blow up your pictures into big dots on pieces of paper in whatever size you fancy. (The online program’s limit is 20 meters. While if you download the program it’s unlimited.)

When you use this program online; a wizard guides you through it and when you finish, it’d give you a pdf. file.

Print, cut off the extra gaps and margins, stick on wall with blue-tack and voila! A cheap poster that is easily disposable and affordable.

This is perfect for a poor miserly person like me. (This is going to be a birthday present for a friend. I’m so cheap >.<)

In case you don’t know who is on my ‘poster’ (where were you, under a rock or something?) it is Lelouch Lamperouge from Code Geass.

Half way through printing; the red light of ink deficiency started flashing. I hope my family members won’t blame me when they find out that i used up all the ink.

Ah well, anything for Lelouch-sama~♥

The Rasterbator is an application which creates rasterized versions of images. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into enormous (or smaller, if you prefer) posters. Enter the online Rasterbation Gallery to see what the images look like.

The Rasterbator originated as a web application at homokaasu.org, but it has gained so much popularity that the web server occassionally cannot handle the load and a standalone version was in place.

The standalone version is the same as the web version, except that downloading images from the web and image cropping are not supported, and you have to set the output size numerically (number of pages wide/high) rather than using a fancy drag handle. The results are exactly the same.

Do you have suggestions on what I could Rasterbate? Why did of all the letters and vowels and consonants and to combine did they choose this name???!

So what are you waiting for, download the program at this site, make sure that you have .NET framework 1.1 installed before you could use this bad-ass of an app.

Rasterbate! Rasterbate! Rasterbate! Woohoo! I’ll post what I’ve Rasterbated in the upcoming posts… It’ll be hot!

Today is Election Day, and your only real responsibility is to vote. Whether you’re affixing a

Today is Election Day, and your only real responsibility is to vote. Whether you’re affixing a stamp to an absentee ballot or pulling the lever in a voting booth, get out there and make your opinon heard!

But, we in the youngest (and perhaps extremely influential) voting demographic also reserve our right to party! And after all the ballots are cast, tonight is shaping up to be the biggest party night in America. So after you’ve done your civic duty, grab your friends and get ready to watch the returns with these creative suggestions:

The Setting:

Make sure you have the essentials: a television and ample seating room. But why not spruce up the space for the occasion? If you’re lucky to have the day off from classes today (as we do at my school– thank you, Fordham!), take a few minutes to make some posters! Rasterbator is an online application that will make any image you choose into a poster up to 20 meters in size. (The image will be blown up and printed out in pieces on regular 8 1/2 x 11″ sheets of paper, so you just assemble the sheets like a grid.) It’s really quick, extremely simple, and only requires the internet and a printer.

The Games

Take it a step further by printing two posters (one of Obama and one of McCain) and grabbing some construction paper. Cut out 50 squares from construction paper and label them with the names of each state. Have your guests tack each respective state onto the poster of the candidate who wins it, to keep track of election returns.

If you and your friends are rooting for different candidates, make the night interesting with a little friendly (yet apolitical) competition! While waiting for the results of the election to unfold, pass the time with a few innocent games. Ask your McCain fans to wear something red, and your Obama fans to wear blue. Play team versions of 20 Questions, Catch Phrase, or Charades. If you have outdoor space, hold a Three-Legged Race or a Tug-o-War, depending upon how many people you can gather for your party.

Not into physical exercise? It’s ok; we’re not either. Drinking games are more our speed, so grab a couple cases of beer (or some red and blue booze!) and play this game until <strike>you puke</strike> we elect a president.

The Food

There’s no better way to celebrate democracy than with some classic American grub. Fill up while the votes pile up with some hamburgers! Order out or make your own ‘Bama Burgers/ Palin Patties. And for the vegetarians among us, serve up a (Bi)Partisan Pizza Pie with this healthy recipe.

And how about some election-themed desserts? Try following this recipe for sugar cookies and buying red and blue icing. As you’re watching the election returns, eat a red cookie every time John McCain wins a state, and a blue cookie every time Barack Obama wins a state. (You can also do the same with cupcakes.) If baking isn’t your thing, why not pick up a few tubs of vanilla (or other white-colored) ice cream, and some red and blue food dye. Guests can display their party pride (or just their patriotism) with tinted ice cream.

Food, drinks and games – even if your candidate of choice doesn’t win, tonight is gonna be fun. And if he does…well, let’s dance.

It’s not what it sounds like. The Rasterbator is a program that creates huge rasterized images from any picture. It expands the picture and breaks it down into 8.5″ x 11″ pages that are printable from your own printer. A couple years ago, I took Banksy’s “Chalk Farm Maid” and turned it into a giant poster for my room (pictured above). The Rasterbator is a really cool way to make giant art that would normally break the bank at Kinko’s or a poster store for pennies on the dollar. You can also get creative with the images, put them on your ceiling, wallpaper your room, have the images interact with things in your room, etc. In summation, the Rasterbator is the perfect solution to make your room awesome if you a.) can’t afford posters and/or b.) are sick of the stock, overused posters plastered in seemingly every college dorm. More pictures of creative Rasterbator uses and a disclaimer after the fold.

DISCLAIMER: It is very easy to make the final product look horrible. You should do measurements and lay out the placement before putting up the first piece of paper, and it will probably take you awhile, depending on how big your poster is (mine took a few hours).

To Raster and that also Faster, let me show you to your Master!!

No, these are no lines from an upcoming sci-fi movie, it’s just a cool thingie I looked up on the internet the other day, but just couldn’t blog earlier about. Last month’s been pretty busy travelling and doing feasability studies!!

Back to the Rasteriser!! So, you have this cute photo of you and your loved one, or this great picturesque travel photo and would like to enlarge it, say to cover up an entire wall or a portion of it…..seemingly impossible or cumbersome or expensive. Hmmmm enter the RasterBator, which can let you just that from your small office or home printer.

Some background. Images can be of 2 types, Raster and Vector. Simply put Vector images can be enlarged without pixellating unlike Raster images. However, you could use a Vector image; pass it through a RasterBator which ratserizes the image (breaks it up into many smaller multi parts which when joined together make up your entire image). To get an idea, check out the biggest done rasterbation ever!!

I did just that with the free Rasterbator and you can see the result in my office below. Pretty Cool huh!!

The Original Picture

For some reason I felt like doing a post about some paintings I’ve done in the last six months or so.

“Sisters” (Theresa and Amanda)
Rasterbated photo on canvas.
36″ x 24″

In this one, aptly titled “Sisters,” I’ve started with a photo from my friend Amanda’s MySpace. From what I can tell its a professional photo that has been photographed again with a cameraphone so it could be put on MySpace. The photo dimensions are approximately 640 by 480 pixels which I’ve enlarged to about 24″ x 36″ using a program called Rasterbator. The image was affixed to the canvas using Mod Podge. This is currently hanging behind a closet door awaiting the inspiration to add paint, either black and white or color.

“Misti and Lisa”
Rasterbated photo on canvas.
24″ x 26″

Again, working from a very small camera phone image of a very dear friend, Lisa, and her friend Misti. I rasterbated the image to be as close to 24″ x 36″ as possible. This time I had it printed in color and affixed to the canvas using Mod Podge. I have started working on skin tones using liquid watercolor paint to tint additional layers of Mod Podge. After each layer of color I’ll add a clear layer of the ‘podge.

Rasterbated drawing on canvas.

This piece started its life as a 4″ x 4″ pencil drawing originally created by Kurt Halsey which I rasterbated to fit my 24″ x 36″ canvas, attached it with Mod Podge and painted using Mod Podge tinted with liquid watercolor paint. Still awaiting the nerve to finish the skintones and the “plus/cross” thing after which I can call it done.
