SOUTHEAST ASIAN CONTEMPORARY SCULPTURE

On November 12th, Tyler Rollins Fine Art (TRFA) introduced another Southeast Asian artist to the New York art scene. Bamboo sculptor Sopheap Pich’s first solo exhibition in New York will run until January 9th 2009, ending the Fall exhibition season.

According to TRFA, Pich has been very active on the international stage in recent years and is now considered to be Cambodia’s most prominent contemporary artist. In addition, Pich’s artwork is currently part of the 4th Fukuoka Asian Art Triennale ending on November 23rd.

Cuando tenemos que restaurar un asiento de silla con rejilla prefabricada, se trata de una silla relativamente moderna. La foto nos muestra el marco del asiento de una mecedora con rejilla que recientemente me encargaron restaurar, sólamente me trajeron el marco. Como podéis observar en la foto, se trata de una mecedora moderna y pintada de negro, en mi opinión es de los años 80.

La restauración del asiento de un asieto como este con rejilla prefabricada es algo sencillo. Lo primero que debemos hacer es quitar el junquillo y la rejilla existentes y que encontraremos pegados con cola de matera. Durante este proceso debemos usar agua para abalandar la cola y ser cuidadosos para no dañar el marco del asiento. Debemos limpiar bien la ranura en la cual colocaremos la nueva rejilla previamente humedecida para que sea mas maleable y así haya menos riesgo de que la dañemos mientras la colocamos en su posición.
Una vez que el marco está listo y encolado por la ranura donde colocaremos la rejilla nueva. Una vez la rejilla está en su posición, debemos asegurarnos de que está suficientemente tensa antes de colocar y pegar el junquillo. Este junquillo sirve para mantiner la rejilla en su posición final. Una vez hemos terminado este proceso, debemos cortar la rejilla sobrante alrededor del junquillo. Si fuese necesario o por motivos deestética, podemos dar un tinte a la rejilla una vez esta está seca.
Para humedecer la rejilla, simplemente debemos mantenerla totalmente sumergida en agua fría durante unos 30 minutos.

In general rattan is categorized under Palmae family plant which having climbed up growth pattern along the other nearby plants ; it is caled as Lepidocaryodidae in taxonomy. The word rattan comes from rotan in Melayu which means peeling, skinning, and/or smoothing.

Indonesia supply 80% of the world’s demand on rattan. From 143 million hectares of Indonesian rain forest, there are 13,20 million hectares produce rattan either in Sumatera, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi as the main areas.  Also in Java and other islands that having rain forest but their supply is much lesser comparing to the said above three islands.  In Indonesia, rattan has their own names according to the ethnic languages, such as rotan manau, batang, lambang, pulut, tohiti, semambu, sampang, bubuay, tretes, balubuk, and galaka.

We have eight rattan genera which consists of 306 species, only 51 species utilized. Whereas in South East Asia totally 516 species comes from 8 genera i.e. (1) Calamus : 333 species, (2) Daemonorops : 122 species, (3) Khortalsia : 30 species, (4) Plectocomia : 10 species, (5) Calopspatha : 2 species, (6) Bejaudia : 1 species, (7) Plectocomiopsis : 16 species, and (8) Ceratolobus : 6 species.  The most high economic value is Calamus and Daemonorops.

So we can regard, rattan is the queen of furniture and accessories products’ material. Rattan, no doubt, will provide a very long lasting tropical scent into your residence. I was thrilled to be at LittleTwinFurnitureMaker’s sale last weekend. There weren’t too many folks when I got there on the Saturday morning. Apparently – as in past E.Murio sales – the Friday teeming with people.

I went fantasy shopping and here’s what I got. Apologies for the less than stellar photo quality.

Totally loved this bed. It’s sleek and simple but has a tropical, resort-y flair to it.

These nesting side tables were cute too. They’re sold separately but I think they look better together. I’m a fan of the lamp too.

I was attracted to this writing table and matching chair because of their versatility. I can picture them in a house with western decor but also in a space full of orientalia.

The U-shaped bade of this dining table is so nice and airy somehow…

This simple baul is made fresh with a lighter stain of crushed bamboo. Love it!

with all the travelling i have been fortunate to experience, i had never had the opportunity to visit the hawaiian islands.  all that changed a few weeks ago when my aunt sent me a harmless email telling me she had this crazy idea and i might just be crazy enough to do it.  they had just purchased a vacation property on the lush south west coast of the big island in a small community called kona paradise, 26 miles south of kailua-kona town.  after we talked over various scenarios, it was decided that i would head to hawaii with my 13 y/o son j and get this place together as a family vacation destination as well as a vacation rental – all with the outside dream that my aunt and uncle might eventually be able to spend more and more time there.

as i pushed my rented wrangler south down the winding hawaii belt road at times hitting elevations of 3,000 feet above sea level, i could see what drew people to the island.  waves crashing against the hard lava coastlines gave way to small coves lined with almost personal sized beaches; bougainvillea dripped onto the roadway alongside giant agave americana and cactus.  closer to kona paradise sat a hillside cemetery under a grove of tropical trees with huge trunks each supporting a sprawling canopy that covered the roadway.  in my 10 days here i would learn every twist and bend of  this 26 mile stretch of winding road intimately as i scoured the small hamlet of kailua-kona town for everything needed to make this house a tropical home and schlepping it back.

upon arriving at the house, you can’t help but be impressed.  built 900 feet above sea level, on stilts, the glass fronted home rises out of the it’s lush, deeply sloped lot surrounded by coconut palms swaying in the trade winds, avocado and mango trees bearing fruit and a complete array of foliage and flowers filling in every nook and cranny available.  geckos scurry up the tree trunks almost racing you as you climb the stairs up to the lanai where you are immediately struck by a sunset view of the mighty pacific ocean, with only a coconut palm or two to ground you.  i spend many an evening watching the sun dip into the water colouring the sky with every tone of red, orange and tangerine available to mother nature.

now the work began.  the previous tenants left an array of issues to be dealt with including a enormous tv armoire, complete with a non-functioning tv, old mattresses (remember, the house is on stilts!) and a carpet looking like perhaps they were mud wrestlers in their spare time.  the beautiful garden was overgrown, and the coconuts a hazard!  i was gonna need some muscle – luckily the aloha spirit is alive and well in kona paradise and in a matter of a few days john agreed to provide the muscle that would be needed over the next few weeks to bring this diamond in the rough back to her rightful place on the street.  mealani, john is her ’sweetie’, had already agreed to clean the house between visitors.  i felt fortunate to meet these two friends early in the trip, they put my mind at ease and provided me with some information that i would need to complete the project.

delivery to kona paradise seemed to be more difficult than i had imagined but luckily i started to build a relationship with greg, the sales person at gray’s furniture in kailua-kona town, and he was able to find someone that wasn’t afraid of a little hard work and only a few days after i arrived he delivered several mattresses, their box springs, along with several pieces of furniture i had picked out.  the place was starting to come together.

when it comes to putting a house together, speed is not something i strive for.  making decisions on design in hurry and choosing furniture that will remain with you for years to come needs without time to think things through leads to mistakes being made.  working from scratch on an incredibly short time frame was going to challenge me.  not only did i have to worry about big things, i had to worry about all the little things that one would need on vacation away from home.  dishes needed to be bought, towels chosen – what about a knife set?  for these things, i chose target.  i was there so much that the cashiers knew me by name and would comment on my choices, even remembering what i had previously purchased.  now, if we could only get a target here in vancouver.

despite being called the big island, there is nothing big about it.  most of the furniture purchases ended up coming from two dealers in kailua-kona town;  fine bamboo and teak furniture and gray’s furniture located just down the road from each other.  i felt like i was haunting the stores by the time i left the island.  every day coming in, measuring, pairing things up – collecting furniture.  then every day loading up the jeep and making the drive back down the island where j and i would lug our finds up the stairs and carefully arrange them to take full advantage off the views and space.

as our time on the island came to end, i was thrilled with what i accomplished in the short time i was there.  there would always be more things to do, more things to add and more ideas to come and with a long rainy vancouver monsoon season on the horizon, perhaps i will just have to pop over there and work on some more things!

A mediterrán lakberendezési stílus eredetileg Görög országból a földközi tenger partvidékéről indult ki. A mediterrán lakberendezés hazánk egyik legkedveltebb lakberendezési stílusa. Ez betudható annak is, hogy az európai ember legszívesebben mediterrán országokban tölti el a nyaralásait. Ezáltal, ha ebben a stílusban van berendezve lakásunk, akkor kicsit mindig úgy érezzük, mintha nyaralnánk. A mediterrán stílusnak számos vonulata elterjedt, de hazánkban leginkább a görög és az olasz mediterrán a jellemző.

Ezt a stílus az egíszerűség, és a puritanizmus jellemzi. Nem törekszenek túlzott díszítésre, és semmiképpen sem jellező rá a fellengzősség. Az épületek kialakítása egyszerű, és tágas. A falakat álltalában fehérre festik, a padlóburkolat természetes anyagokból készül (kő vagy fa).

A színek terén elsősorban természetes színeket alkalmaznak, melyek meleg érzést sugároznak a mediterrán stílusban berendezett otthonnak. Álltalában matt és selyemfényű árnyalatokat használnak.

Pl.: Vörös, tégla, barna, zöld, fehér, öszibarack, okker sárga, narancs sárga, tört fehér

A belső díszítésre kevéstárgyat használnak, viszont ezek elég hansújosak, és nagyman meghatározzák egy-egy helység hangulatát. A tárgyak kiválasztásában nagy hangsúly kap azok funkcionalitása, és használhatósága. Pl.: ülő ládák, kerámia edények és kaspók, természetes anyagokból készült tálak és vázák.

A berendezés formavilága egyszerű, nem túlcsicsázott. A bútorok robosztus alkatúak és masszívak. Felületüket lakkozzák, vagy festik. A görög mediterrán stílus különlegessége, hogy előszeretettel használnak élénk kék festéket a bútoraik és használati tárgyaik festésére. Ezt alaklmazzák az ajtók és az ablakok festésére is.

Lakástextilek terén nem használnak túl változatos skálát. Lenvászon és rusztikus textilek et, juta és kilim szőnyegeket alkalmaznak a mediterrán otthon díszítésére.

Összefoglalva a mediterrán stílus kellemes, meleg és nyugtató hatást kölcsönöz otthonunknak.

Ezt  a blogot azért kezdtem el írni, hogy segítséget nyújtsak a lakberendezési tárgyak és lakástextilek alkalmazására és felhasználására a különböző lakberendezési stílusokban.

Ha van egy olyan kultúra, amelynek tetszik a szín és formavilága, hangulata akkor érdemes elgondolkodni rajta, hogy az otthonunkban hasonló hangulatot teremtsük. Ez nem is olyan bonyolult mint elsőre látszik.

1. Első lépésben ki kell találnunk, hogy melyik az a stílus, amely közel áll a szívünkhöz, és a hangulata megnyugtat minket.
2. Ezután tájékozódnunk kell az általunk választott lakberendezés stílus szokásairól, főbb vonásairól, stílusjegyeiről, forma és színvilágáról.
3. Ha ez megvan, akkor jöhet a saját otthonunk vizsgálata, hogy hol, milyen színeket lehet alkalmazni a helységek fényviszonyait is figyelembe véve.
4. Ezután jöhet a falak festése és esetleg a padló burkolat cseréje.
5. Ha ezzel megvagyunk akkor jöhetnek a választott stílusra jellemző bútorok és lakberendezési tárgyak, lakástextilek és dísztárgyak. Ezek kiválasztása nagyon fontos, mert a fő stílusjegyeket általában ezek képezik.

Egy lakáson belül akár 2 vagy 3 stílusjegy is alkalmazható, de ezeket megfelelően el kell választani egymástól, mert a végén csak egy stílustalan káoszt kapunk. Ezt a legegyszerűbben úgy tudjuk kivitelezni, ha egy helységben csak egy stílust alkalmazunk.

A berendezési és dísztárgyak mellett érdemes komoly hangsúlyt fektetni a lakástextilek számos alkalmazási módjára is, melyek nagyban befolyásolják otthonunk stílusát és hangulatát.

A következő bejegyzésekben a különböző lakberendezési stílusokat fogom röviden bemutatni, hogy sikerüljön kiválasztani a legoptimálisabbat.

A trip to Baguio City market can be such an enligtening experience for someone who has an eye for “exotic” fruits.

For example:

1. The Persimmon. My mom thought it was tomatoes. I also thought the same when I came upon it a few years ago. I could not remember the taste. It probably does not taste as significant as the others.

2. The Rattan. I’ve never seen one in Mindanao where I come from. This fruit is remarkable as it is unique. Its scales remind me of snakes (grrr shudder!). It’s taste!

Cruelly sour!

This is the sour-est fruity in the world. The sour-ness does not however deter me from eating the rattan.Good thing im a sour-fruity fan.  I dip it in sugar and salt. My friends with vinegar. You should try this for yourself.  You just got to be ready for a big surprise for every bite.

3. The local cherries. Its not as exciting as the others. Cherries are cherries. Need I say more?

4. Strawberries. Strawberries can only be had in Baguio City and Benguet. They have a large strawberry farm in La Trinidad, Benguet where you can pick for a fee of course. You buy your own little basket, pick your choicest strawberry and weigh it later. You will pay the farm owners per kilo of your harvest.

I will find some time again to visit the market soon for my hunt for exotic fruits. This is it yet for now.

Tanto la tireta que usamos para tejer manualmente la rejilla de una silla como la rejilla prefabricada son productos que tienen un color muy pálido antes de ser usados. A veces su color da la impresión de que la rejilla no es natural y que está hecha de una sustancia sintética, pero esto no es así. La tireta y la rejilla prefabricada se obtienen del rattan, una planta tropical trepadora de la cual se usa la corteza interna. (Hay sillas con asientos de plástico que son una imitación a rejilla- sin comentario!)
Con tiempo, la rejilla se oxida en contacto con el aire y la luz para tomar un tono dorado o de color a miel que es imposible lograr con un tinte. Yo personalmente uso tintes cuando la silla de ratán es parte de un conjunto y cuando deseamos que la parte de la silla que hemos restaurado tenga un color similar al asiento o respaldo que no hemos necesitado restaurar. No obstante, con un tinte no podemos conseguir la belleza y color que la rejilla obtiene con el paso del tiempo.
Si lo persona quien me encarga la restauración del asiento prefiere un tinte, esto se hace fácilmente. Siempre debemos considerar que nos vamos a sentar en la silla y por lo tanto no queremos que el tinte nos manche la ropa, por esto mi consejo es que cera de muebles no se debe usar. Es mejor aplicar un tinte con nogalina o tintes a base de disolvente. Mi consejo es que siempre es mejor experimentar primero en un trozo de rejilla o tireta para ver el resultado amtes de comenzar a dar el tinte a la pieza.

O trafności wyboru przekonał mnie mój znajomy Holender, który urodził się na jednej z indonezyjskich plantacji rattanu i całe życie poświęcił surowcom naturalnym. To on po zapachu potrafi określić gatunek i jakość surowca. „O! Macie doskonały fotel, takie produkował w latach 50-tych Horsnaes. On musi być szalenie wygodny” – to jego słowa, gdy zobaczył mebel na naszej ekspozycji.

Wiedziałem, że trafnie odgadł, gdyż MONET, to powrót do dawnej stylistyki, gdzie liczyła się jakość wykonania, gatunek surowca i ergonomia. Ja siedziałem w tym fotelu – marzenie.

Nic nie jest w stanie mnie zaskoczyć. Nic, co ma jakikolwiek związek z plecionkami. Tak przynajmniej mi się wydawało. Do czasu aż zobaczyłem prezentację mebla o wdzięcznej nazwie Tonecoon zaprojektowanego przez znaną grupę PIE.

PIE, czyli Project Import Export jest organizacją zrzeszającą młodych (ale już uznanych) designerów. Jej członkowie są rozsiani po całym świecie, trudno więc mówić o jakimś konkretnym kierunku, w którym podąża ta grupa. Jedyna stała w ich pracy to szeroko pojęte “Living Space”.

Meble i akcesoria meblowe projektowane przez PIE są wykonywane ręcznie z naturalnych materiałów (tym razem żadnych plecionek syntetycznych). Prezentowany przeze mnie Tonecoon zadziwia krzywizną i bogatą fakturą, nadającą temu meblowi ciepło i delikatną elegancję… A może elegancką delikatność?

Mebel jest wykonany z hiacyntu wodnego oplecionego wokół rattanowej ramy. Zastosowanie tego surowca, choć trudne w moim mniemaniu opłaciło się projektantom.

Cena poszła w parze z designem. 4000$. W Europie niedostępny.

Wszędzie staram się popularyzować meble wyplatane. Zwłaszcza te, które są doskonale zaprojektowane i perfekcyjnie wykonane. Swego czasu dla magazynu „Urządzamy dom i mieszkanie” napisałem krótką notatkę o magii mebli wyplatanych… i, o dziwo, spotkała się z dużym zainteresowaniem czytelników. Pisałem tam:

„Wiklina, rattan, abaka, hiacynt wodny, różne gatunki traw, rafia lub nowoczesne włókna syntetyczne takie jak np.: Hularo, SanLux firmy Lambert, Saleen czy też Raucord to surowce do produkcji mebli wyplatanych, które są wykorzystywane przez najlepszych projektantów i producentów do tworzenia doskonałych kolekcji, do tej pory kojarzone są głównie z wiklinowym, bujanym fotelem babci. Dlatego przy wyborze mebla wyplatanego warto zwrócić uwagę nie tylko na jego formę, ale i rodzaj surowca, zalecenia producenta i jakość zastosowanych materiałów plecionkarskich.

Te nowoczesne włókna wypierają tradycyjne surowce plecionkarskie, głownie z tarasów i ogrodów, tam gdzie mamy do czynienia z oddziaływaniem czynników atmosferycznych. Do ogrodów i na tarasy polecamy meble wykonane z najwyższej jakości włókna Hularo® lub SanLux firmy Lambert, odpornego na działanie słońca, wody oraz ekstremalnych temperatur, zapewniając użytkownikom najwyższy komfort w każdych warunkach. Światowi liderzy produkujący meble plenerowe, oparli swoje rozwiązania właśnie o te włókna, które wyglądają jak plecionka Lloyd Loom lub taśma rattanowa.”

Obserwując rozwój trendów i zjawisk na rynku mebli ogrodowych zauważyłem, że meble z plecionek syntetycznych dumnie wkroczyły do supermarketów i niestety nie mają nic wspólnego z meblami, które oferują uznani sprzedawcy poza tym, że w wielu przypadkach są nieudolnymi kopiami (zachowując magiczne 30% zmian, aby nie być posądzonym o kradzież wzoru). Obawiam się, że tendencje poszukiwania najtańszych rozwiązań zepsują rynek mebli plenerowych ze szlachetnych plecionek syntetycznych, tak jak zepsuto rynek mebli z rattanu, gdzie szlachetny manau zastąpiono pospolitą trzciną laotańską.
