THE POWER OF TALK !

this past sunday i attended sunday funday yelp brunch at the rattlesnake. i’m going to take the easy way out and cut and paste the invite:

With the holidays fast approaching (and yes, we mean Thanksgiving and all the festivities that surround Christmahanakwanzika), there’s really no need to create any more hullabaloo in our schedules this time of year. That’s why, on November 8, 2009, we’re heading over to The Rattlesnake for a chill Sunday Funday of brunch and booze!

Get ready for the best Sunday of your life, which WILL include:

…a lazy afternoon with your fellow Elites
…belly-bursting, tummy-tantalizing treats courtesy of Chef Brian Poe
…the hottest new way to get sauced at brunch: Bloody Mary’s and more made with Beija Cachaça, plus some bubbly concoctions courtesy of Mionetto’s iL Prosecco!

and now here are the pictures:

the bar was crazy busy!

i stood at the bar for-ever but i never did get a drink i eventually had to move on to the food.

lots o’ bacon! which i resisted…

these were two small plates, i promise!

plate #1: eggs, potatoes, refried beans (my fave!), rice, and the most amazing bloody mary eggs benedict on cornbread.

plate #2: tortillas, taco fixin’s and fruit

i made breakfast tacos and had the fruit for dessert yum!

everything was delicious. the bloody mary eggs benedict were definitely the star of the event but i was also impressed by how perfectly cooked the more traditional breakfast items were. i mean, eggs and bacon are pretty basic…but few places actually get them right. especially in mass quantities! rattlesnake definitely seems like it would be a solid brunch spot. honestly though, i don’t know if i would return- i wasn’t impressed by some of the staff

there’s leighann, yelp boston’s very own and very sweet community manager doing her thing:

y’all need to check out yelp.com if you haven’t already. not only is it a totally useful website but it’s such a fun community as well. seriously…if you’re looking for a way to procrastinate at work check out their talk threads- they are ridiculous!

it was a great event and i was stuffed after all that food! tom and i took advantage of the gorgeous weather and walked off some of the calories. it was sunny and warm out, so uncharacteristic for november in boston- there were people in tees and shorts!

we walked through the public garden, boston common, downtown crossing and would up at faneuil hall.

i don’t know what i’m doing in this pic but i wanted to show you my vintage cowboy boots. i found them while cleaning out my closet- i love ‘em!

there’s faneuil hall behind me!

we shopped and watched some of the street performers. this guy’s an escape artist. tom was impressed.

nf chai latte! i got my first red cup of the season! woohoo

and i got a cookie. not a starbucks one though…those aren’t really worth it.

these were were worth it though. kilvert & forbes cookies = incredible

and these cupcakes were too cute not to snap a pic.

Looking ahead to Phoenix Int. Raceway this week, we finally have championship battle on our hands! Jimmie Johnson crashed just three laps into the race at Texas last Sunday, and Mark Martin finished fourth to land just 73 points behind Jimmie. The big story at Phoenix will be whether Mark can cut into Johnson’s lead even more, or if Johnson can put a cap on this year’s title. Both drivers have been exceptional at the 1-mile flat oval in recent races. Johnson has won three of the past four races at the track, while Martin dominated from the pole to win there this past spring to break Jimmie’s winning streak.

What do I think? I think both drivers will be up in the top-ten and top-five, but Mark will probably come out of this deal about 40 to 50 points behind Jimmie heading into championship weekend at Homestead. That means Jimmie will finish only a few spots behind Mark in the race. Mark can win it, but who is the driver that will most likely keep Mark from winning it?

Denny Hamlin is the man when it comes to Phoenix. In fact, he is the man when it comes to flat tracks in general. You name it, he can win it. Phoenix, Richmond, Martinsville, Loudon, Indianapolis. Although he’s never won in the Valley of the Sun, he needs to be considered in your fantasy lineup. In races at Phoenix with the COT (Car Of Tomorrow) chassis, his average finish is 6.6. Pretty hefty.

Jimmie Johnson boasts a pretty number, too. In 12 starts at Phoenix, Johnson’s average finish is 5.4, with three wins. Compare that to Mark’s average finish of 9.0 in 25 races, and we have a fight on our hands.

- If Jeff Gordon can qualify good, he can run good. Jeff has been very hit-or-miss at Phoenix, with one win, eight top-fives and 15 top-tens in 21 starts. His average start of 8.7 is tops among Chase drivers. But he has also had days where that team is just off the board, speed-wise. If Jeff wants to be a part of the championship fight at Homestead with Mark and Jimmie, he needs to gain maximum points at Phoenix.

Joey’s pick to win: Denny Hamlin, who is stout on flat tracks, as I previously mentioned. Hamlin, who has been very inconsistent in the Chase, finished second last week at Texas. Now he needs a win.

For many years now I’ve dreamed of rattlesnakes – the dreams always occur on the ranch and I am either finding them or trying to catch them. In the dreams they are threatening and scary, but not evil. This is the first dream where I was bitten by one. What does it mean?

Leo had already managed to walk past it on a path without seeing it under a clump of grass, but it heard me coming and moved which is how I saw it – it was only a step or two in front, partially obscured by grass growing over the edge of the small path. I scarpered up the bank away from it, only looking round to see it in more detail when a safer distance away.
Welcome back to the “Jesse has a lot of metal CD’s” show! Next on the list is You

Welcome back to the “Jesse has a lot of metal CD’s” show! Next on the list is Youthanasia by Megadeth, recorded waaaaay back in 1994. The Clinton Era had just started, NAFTA had come together, and a figure skater put a hit out on another. Those were the days….

The nice thing about selling all of this heavy metal is getting to see all of the awesome art displayed on any respectable metal album. From the obscene to the hilarious, any band worth their weight in Vodka has to have an iconic image atop any plastic case they sell unless they wish that case never to be opened.

It’s been a standard for heavier music to be more provocative visually just as with anything else in society that’s a bit off the social norm. Why else do you think my local strip club is shaped like a castle?

Sabbath had some great ones, Zeppelin did as well, and Judas Priest brought a new standard to the art in the 80’s. But the modern bands have taken it and been able to really push to extremes that would have never been tolerated if we didn’t have the pioneers nudge back the idea of “decency.”

Back to the album at hand, anything that features babies hanging off a clothesline by their toes is a winner.

See? In case you missed it, here it is again…

Alright, enough of that.

Musically, this album gets a lot of flack from metal heads for a few reasons. First off, most fans find it hard to stick with a band if that band doesn’t continue being as brutal and raw and fresh as they were when they got hooked. Since Dave Mustaine and company decide to throw in a parody song, a quiet song, and an almost country song, some see this as the start of the decline of the band.

The true test of a quality Megadeth album is a simple three part ordeal.

Crazy lyrics about death, war, politics, and superhero-type fantasy?

Check.

Insane, blinding speed with dueling guitar solos?

Double check.

Memorable tunes that need to played everytime you see them live?

Check indeed, and that’s why this one goes into the “Good” pile of ‘Deth albums. A lot of them have the style and the substance, but the songs are forgettable or sound too much like other ones.

It’s only for those that have checked out their other great albums, but still want a little more. There is a rumor that Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax will be touring together next year….if this happens, I will be stoked. I wish I could hyperbolize more than that, but I can’t. It’s so awesome, it drains my creativity.

I’ve seen them live twice, and the first time was the loudest show I’ve ever seen. While Travis and I were driving away, during their encore (we like to beat traffic, so shut up) we could hear Mustaine tearing it up while we were driving down the freeway, leaving the city. Just insane. Also the first show I ever saw a “This concert might be too loud. Please wear hearing protection” sign at a show.

The eternal “Metallica vs Megadeth” debate will never end, but I will throw my vote into that pile…

Megadeth.

When I sell another of their albums, maybe I’ll explain myself…

I first wrote about rattlesnakes a few years back on the Desert Explorer website. The research was a

I first wrote about rattlesnakes a few years back on the Desert Explorer website. The research was as much for myself as for visitors to the site. My goal was to find out the truth about rattlesnake bites. Some of the questions I addressed, or tried to, included asking what first aid measures should be employed. What kind of treatment can be administered if you are deep in the bush and cannot get to medical help? Is the venom of young snakes more potent than older snakes? And does the latest suction device, the Sawyer Extractor, really work?

I searched the web, visited the library, and called the Poison Control Center with a list of questions. My main question for the Poison Control Center was about treatment, about what to do if I was a five-day walk from help. I called them a number of times, as my research developed, and asked that question again and again. I got the same answer: “Seek medical attention.” None of the doctors I spoke with would commit to anything beyond that statement.

A good friend of mine told me how he encountered the same answer in a seminar he attended as an environmental scientist. The treatment for rattlesnake bite: “Seek medical attention.” On a recent trip to Utah one of my fellow canyoneers told me how she heard the same phrase during a wilderness medicine course.

With this in mind I decided to revisit my rattlesnake bite research. I have since scoured the web for more recent data, finding quite a bit including literature about Crotaline Fab antivenom (a brand name antivenom) and it’s effectiveness, the toxicity of venom and it’s possible increase in potency, and recent studies on the epidemiology of snakebite and trends in mortality rates.

I also made a couple of calls to the Poison Control Center, still asking the same questions and getting the same answer, but this time with a qualifying statement. I asked my usual question about what to do if I am a five-day walk from medical help and get bitten by a rattlesnake. On my second call I was given the usual answer, but I had been persistent enough in my questioning that the doctor added to his stock statement: “Seek medical attention, or die.” Finally an answer, but not the one I wanted to hear. He told me that there is no field treatment, made it sound like first aid should be quick, and limited to stabilisation of the patient, and was resoundingly against suction devices such as the Sawyer Extractor. Here he made a good point saying that if you can extract 30% of the venom, as the manufacturer states, the other 70% is still in your system and just as likely to kill you if you don’t get antivenom. (I will still carry the Extractor with me- if there is at least some chance that it might help save my life, it’s worth the few ounces of weight.)

Personal Locator Beacons
This same doctor made another good point- if you walk off into the bush, are many days away from help, and are bitten, the only sure way to save yourself is by having a satellite phone or a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). Rattlesnake bites might be reason enough to look into a PLB, something I have never considered before. And oddly enough today I found an article online about abuses of PLB’s by people who probably shouldn’t have been let out into the wilderness alone anyway, using it to call for help because their water tasted salty. This a far cry from Dave Foreman’s fantasy Primeval Wilderness where there would be no trails, no signs, no guidebooks, no maps, and no rescue. True Wilderness, with a capital W. So much for that. For more PLB stories, click here.

Red more about rattlesnakes, bites, first aid, and find links to some of the data I found at the Desert Explorer website.

Everett Ruess
In case you didn’t hear, Everett Ruess is no longer found. The family had doubts that the bones found along Comb Ridge really were those of Ruess and sought a second DNA test from the Armed Forces DNA lab. The test results conclusively stated that the remains were not those of Everett Ruess. The remains found along Comb Ridge are now being returned to the Navajo Nation, as they are not those of a caucasian. So the mystery of Ruess’ disappearance remains a mystery. And I still have an excuse for crawling around amongst the rocks searching for bones in the Utah desert.

Badlands by Bruce Springsteen always makes me think of the Badlands back home. I’m back riding horses and watching for rattlesnakes as the rain moves in. My father finds one and crushes it with a stick. My father becomes a god to me then because he’s killed the snake that haunts my dreams. The way he talks of the kill, he’s a hero, a cowboy god. I watch for arrowheads, something to make me a warrior, too. There’s a smell of grass so dry it warns of fire that could start spontaneously. This is cowboy country, and it’s light years away from where I am now. It’s magical land, but you don’t think about that when you’re on the saddle. It’s only magical in its distance, with a song that plays on random. I was planning an average evening on an average day, waiting for the rain. Instead I get Badlands at 6pm.

I found a couple rattlesnakes the other day and moved them off the road. Of course, when a ranger and a rattlesnake are in the middle of the road, traffic stops. I did manage to find some snakes without attracting crowds, so I got some really nice pictures. From the looks of it, the snakes weren’t very appreciative of my efforts, but oh well. Hopefully they made it to their hibernation dens before the cold came again. Who would have thought that they use the same hibernation den for all of their lives? And that the mothers pass it on to the young? That’s a lot of snakes in one place!

Dick Rupert, 68, was climbing down from a tree stand Saturday morning when the snake bit him on the calf, Oglethorpe County Coroner James Mathews told the Athens Banner-Herald.

Rupert died at Wills Memorial Hospital in Washington about an hour later, Mathews said.

Rupert’s 12-year-old grandson, who was hunting with him, tried to drive him back to the road on a four-wheeler, but he passed out and fell off twice, Mathews said.

Rupert’s grandson and his son, who was hunting nearby, dragged him to the road, and he was unresponsive when Oglethorpe EMS workers arrived at 7:44 a.m., Mathews told the newspaper.

“The grandson was doing CPR when our crew got there,” Mathews told the Banner-Herald. “But Mr. Rupert was already in full cardiac arrest.”

John Willson, a snake researcher at the University of Georgia’s Savannah River Ecology Lab, said the snake was likely a timber rattler. Such bites rarely are deadly, he said.

“Most venomous species in the Southeast, you can recover if you make it to a hospital within two to three hours,” Willson said.

The Lady in question was a 9-year-old female German Shepherd mix. She was camel-tan with a black mask. Lady’s rump raised up 2 inches above her tail and had a cute little dimple in it. Basically, she was fat and did not look too fast or self-reliant. She looked like she ate a lot of Alpo and laid around digesting all day.

Boy, was I wrong!

“Lady attacks and eats any critter crossing her property. She left a racoon paw on the back porch the other day.”

I could see her face was swollen at least 3 times it’s normal size. An obvious envenomation. I started her anti-venom, cleaned her bite wounds, treated her to prevent infection and soothe her pain. I wanted more answers.

“How big was the snake?”

“About 6 feet long.”

“How long was it attached to Lady’s face?”

“Only a few seconds before I pulled it offa her. You wanna see?”

What? I walked out to the parking lot and shined the flashlight into the bed of a blue Silverado. A dead 6 foot diamondback rattlesnake lay stretched across the truck bed.

I could not tell you who was tougher, Lady, or her dad.

Lady made a full recovery and went back to killing and mostly eating any critter on her property.

In the late evening usually between 8:30 and 9:30 pm, I go for a walk with the d.o.g. A few days ago, I started bringing a flashlight since I thought I might have seen a snake while walking a few days ago. Now, after just two days of walking with a flashlight, I saw this on the sidewalk right in front of me. I’m not a herpetologist, but to me, that looks like a young rattlesnake about to eat a small blue belly lizard. The picture was taken in the dark, on my extremely old Blackberry.

So here’s my question. If I’ve gone three years walking at night with no flashlight. How many of these have I walked right past with no problems at all? Sometimes, ignorance can be bliss.

I miss my childhood……

I know it’s gone, but I miss it nonetheless…

Was it the lack of real responsibility?

The innocence?

The simplistic view of the world I once held?

The dreams?

Adventures?

I used to have a recurring dream way back when I was 5-ish. In the dream I was in this huge desert lot that used to be across the street from our house. The lot was about 2 square miles, but at 5yrs old it might as well been 10sq. miles. As the dream would begin I was riding along in Kitt, the talking car from Knight Rider. We would drive at top speed straight through the cacti and past angry rattlesnakes. A pack of wild coyotes would chase us when we came too close to their lair. After a short time we would come upon the rim of a huge crater. Kitt would drive right in, and we would do donuts around a giant house sized Humpty Dumpty, who lay helplessly in the middle. As Kitt drove me around Humpty I can always remember that giant egg screaming and yelling at us to get out of there. We would circle around him a few times, and then using Kitt’s “turbo boost” go straight through Humpty’s head. There would be a huge explosion, and that’s how the dream ended. What did it mean?

I remember when kids thought snap bracelets were cool.

I remember the first time I played Super Mario Bros. when my friend got a Nintendo for Christmas (I was soooo jealous)

I remember my first bike without training wheels, A red and white checkered BMX.

Mask, the cartoon, and all the mask toys I had. Not to mention G.I. Joe and all of their toys too.

I used to have giant plastic tinker toys.

I remember finding a squished rattlesnake in the road and putting it in a plastic bag, to take to school for show and tell, but I was too afraid to put it in my backpack, because I thought the fangs would poke through and kill me.

What do you miss?

Teodora Cuero from La Huerta in Baja (see Bladderpod post above) told us a gathering story, which anthropologist Mike Wilken translated:

I went with my daughter and my son-in-law. It took us about an hour from my house to get up there to gather the sweet acorns. We found one tree that had a lot of the sweet acorns down below it. They just fall off on the ground.

And so I sat down on the ground, and once I’m sitting down—I’ll get all the way down on the ground—I can’t get up by myself. I need people to pull me to get up. And so there I was laying down on the ground gathering acorns. I was gathering and I didn’t even notice there was one of those very poisonous rattlesnakes coiled up right there. And I touched that rattlesnake. When I touched it and noticed it was a rattlesnake, I don’t know how I did it, but I was standing up right away!! I don’t remember how I got up there, I just did.

These rattlesnakes are so bad that if they bite you, you won’t go more than 4 steps.

The rattlesnake basket above was woven by Abe Sanchez, master basketweaver. The rattlesnake basket above is from San Jose de la Zorra, a basketweaving village in Baja.

I had a lot of help with this recipe. I basically just picked fresh herbs and took notes as Jeremy simmered it all together.

RattleSnake Stew:

3 Cans of Cheap Beer (Busch, Keystone Light, Hamms are all great. Budweiser will NOT work though!)

1 to 2 medium sized rattlesnakes (could possibly substitute non-venomous snakes)

4 Potatoes

3 Ears of Neighbor’s Corn

7 Cloves of Garlic

1 of Jody’s Super Hot Red Peppers

1 Onion bought in town

Fresh Rosemary & Sage (this is where I came in useful)

Seasoning Salt, Cracked Black Pepper, Cayenne, Paprika & Thyme

1/2 Cup Flour for Breading Snake Bits

Chicken Broth that has been simmering off & on for 2 days

A Well Season Cast Iron Pot

Open can of beer. Drink beer. Open second can, poor a few swills of beer into simmering chicken broth, continue to drink the rest of the beer. (Oh, and before you start, you should have already skinned & cleaned your rattlesnake.) Cut rattle snake into 3 inch long pieces. Roll snake filets in flour (we used brown rice flour, but any flour will do). Fry breaded filets in skillet. Next add onions, corn kernals, diced hot red pepper & chopped garlic to saute with snake. Once it is all nice hot & seasoned, add sauted snake & veggies to simmering stock. Open another beer. Drink. Wait. Drink. Wait. I suggest letting this all simmer together for a couple of hours, as I have learned that rattlesnake is a pretty tough & stringy meat.

Serve up in coffee mugs. Sit on the back deck & watch the stars. And talk about other ways to prepare your next snake!
