18 October 2003 – Camden Town & The Rugby

Had a nice lay-in today…The body still not working properly though.

Matt & I made our way up to Wimbledon station at about 11am.

Caught the train from Wimbledon to Waterloo and then from Waterloo to Camden Town.

Perhaps one of the greatest points of my trip thus far was the the absolute splendor of Camden Town. The freedom to be yourself was unbelievable. I witnessed every possible type of person you can get mulling around the markets

You had your Goths, Raver, Metalheads, 50’s style Greasers, Rockers, Hip-hoppers, Rasta’s and on and on and on.

Once you have been here you realize how small you are, as I walked I began to feel something. This feeling was that of being humbled and understanding that I have not even begun to tap into my own potential. I felt so small, almost as small as a fly. Then everything began to click and being that fly I was able to sit on the wall and take notes and draw inspiration for what I really wanted out of life and where I want to go.

The most amazing fashions were also on offer here, but not in my price range. So folks at work, no need to worry as I did not buy anymore see through shirts etc. I would come back to the UK for Camden alone.

Made our way back into Wimbledon to watch the SA vs England match at a pub where I met some of Matthews SA friends and family.A great vibe and not being the biggest Rugby supporter I found myself getting into the spirit of things. I tried to start a slow clap, but it didn’t work. We lost, I didn’t care. I was on cloud 9 still. (No, I didn’t try any magic mushrooms at Camden)

After the game I socialized a bit and listened to some great stories, and then decided I would make my way back to Lutterworth and my cousin tonight rather than tomorrow morning as we had plans for Sunday.

Short stop off at Matthew’s place to grab my stuff, considered saying goodbye to the old lady at number 7 Richmond Avenue, but never did.

Matthew waited with me at the bus stop, however a blind bus driver cut out goodbyes short as I had to run after the bus with all my bags hanging around my neck causing me to look like a puppy sticking its head out the window.

Made the bus, made the station, took the wrong train, took another wrong one, then made my way to Euston station where I purchased my ticket to Rugby where my cousin would fetch me 2 hours later.

8:30pm I arrived at Rugby station, made our way home, and had we some Chinese dishes.

Once the Chinese girls left we went for some supper.

Just kidding, we had Chinese for supper

Rounded off an amazing 4 days with some Golf on the PC.

I have always thought myself one of the errant few who couldn’t wrap his ear cochlea around dance/house music. Try and try as I might, there was always something lacking there for me — even when a stellar voice reverberated in the foreground of the what many describe as the “booming” beats of this gay club mainstay.

A former/reformed raver (or, more appropriately dubbed “party kid”) well before it was ever deemed cool, I was more into the almost carnal throb of drum & bass and/or jungle.

So color me skeptic but my utter love of David Guetta’s hit and collaboration with former Destiny’s Child member Kelly Rowland “When Love Takes Over” seemed it would be a fluke of epic proportions more than anything else. Of course, I was surprised when after getting an early listen of Guetta’s new album One Love before its August 25th release (courtesy of his marketing/pr peeps stateside) I was actually grooving to many of the tracks.

This is Guetta’s 4th studio album and, admittedly, before this release I hadn’t heard of the well-respected producer/DJ, though his career spans almost two decades. The album is chockfull of some memorable beats all my gays will surely be dancing to — if they aren’t already. Each collaboration — with the likes of Kelly Rowland, Will.i.am, Ne-Yo, AKON, Estelle — not only highlight some amazing production skills on the part of Guetta but doesn’t shy away from some serious great vocals by the aforementioned and more.

“…infused with all the best flavors of contemporary pop music that will appeal to such a broad audience both on and off the dance floor,” Guetta says of the album.

It is all worth the listen! Guetta gets nothing but love from me!

File under: My faves: “Sexy Bitch” (collaboration with AKON), the #1 Black Eyed Peas’ hit “I Gotta Feeling” and all of the Rowland collaborations.

Ryker Beck of Exodi (formerly Genesis) sent a notice that she will be having a 50% off sale until July 3rd, and all proceeds will benefit the Make A Wish Foundation. That makes it an excellent time to shop, and it is so generous of Ryker! The sale includes most items in the store, with the exception of the Candace Skin, I believe. It does include the new Shiloh Skins and Eden V2, which are only 400L per makeup! I previously blogged Shiloh, if you want to take a peek. In this post I am wearing Eden V2.

Between the state of my wrists, some family things and the fact that it’s summer, I haven’t been making a whole lot of new art recently. Or rather, what I am working on I am working on so slowly it doesn’t show up on the internet.

So here’s a retrospective of things I have done. This ain’t fine art, this is what I drew when I had free time in highschool and university, and this is the person that wants to draw things for videogames.

Here, let’s start with a few randoms – most of these drawings were cached in story ideas for comics or videogames or novels, but things don’t often go where you want them to, and then eight years later all you have is adorable and amusing drawings to remind you of the good old days.

I’ve done my fair share of fanart, as well:

Now for the high-concept original stuff! These demons were designed, I think, mostly for the helluvit.

These three are for an epic fantasy story I was working on. There was lots of sexy betrayal and sad landscapes and gore involved.

<img title="A lost-princess character all decked out for a fight. Hah, lookit the spikes!" src="../files/2009/06/aidanellewarrior.jpg?w=72" alt="A lost-princess character all decked out for a fight.
These are a few quick concepts for a story I had written to take place in a farmhouse. I had never, at this point, been inside a farmhouse except at Black Creek Pioneer Village.

<img class="alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1069" title="Character design for a story about a farm.
These are raven demon designs for a story set in Quebec in the late 17th century.

These are some more artsy things I worked on in the first few years of university that I think are still kind of hilarious/awesome.

<img title="Self Portrait from first year painting class.
Anyways, hopefully that’s hilarious and interesting for you, too, internet! I know I was pretty amused, digging through to find all this.

I call them FRACTOBOTS cos they are made of fractals. What I do is I create a fractal in a fractal software called APOPHYSIS (free software again!) & then I wud take parts of that fractal & turn them into patterns in MS Paint & I put all the different patterns together to form a robot. After that I enhanced the final product in a photo editing software.

OKAY … HE’S PROMOTING A MOVIE … BUT STILL … I’m assuming that at this

OKAY … HE’S PROMOTING A MOVIE … BUT STILL …

I’m assuming that at this point, with the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie opening just days away, that most comic book fans have already seen the Public Service Announcement that was recorded by MOVIE STAR Hugh Jackman. If you haven’t, I’m including it here and now because there are many longtime comic book professionals that wondered (mostly in the past) if it would ever happen.

JOE FIELD HAD TO WAIT 25 YEARS FOR THIS

When the news broke many days ago about this video combo promoting the Wolverine movie that included a PSA for Free Comic Book Day, I got on the phone and called one of my favorite retailers, Joe Field. Joe’s store, Flyer Colors is, regrettably, one of those great comic book retail outlets that I’ve never had the good sense or good luck to actually visit.

This SATURDAY is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY! Don't forget!

How do I know it is a good store? I don’t, but I do know a couple of things. First, I know and like Joe Field. He thinks clearly, he speaks his mind, he’s thoughtful and he is nice to have around, whether at dinner or at a business meeting. Joe Field is my kind of guy. When I grow up, I hope that people think I’m 75% the guy that Joe Field already is. The second thing that I know is that a comic book retail store tends to reflect that personality of the owner … or at least the guy in charge. Based on these facts, I’m sure Flying Colors is a great store.

*** BLATANT PLUG WARNING *** FLYING COLORS, 2980 Treat Boulevard, Concord, CA 94518, (925) 825-5410, www.flyingcolorscomics.com

Joe Field and some FF action figures

I called Joe Field when the video and press release hit the comic news sites because Free Comic Book Day (FCBD)was Joe Field’s idea. Congratulations were in order. The first Free Comic Book Day was held in 2002. Like many good ideas, Free Comic Book Day is both genius inspiration and simply obvious. It seems like the kind of idea that has been, or always should have been, part of the comic book industry landscape. So bravo, a fanatic round of applause for Joe Field.

I called Flying Colors and Joe took a few minutes to talk to me. After telling me some important information about the Wolverine/FCBD public service announcement, we started to talk about how this seemed to both of us like a major milestone in the history of comic books to both of us.

“I remember writing to Comic’s Buyers Guide 25 years ago,” Joe said to me. “I wanted to know what it would take or how we could get a BIG celebrity to endorse comic books. And now it has finally happened.”

Some guy sitting outside FLYER COLORS (sorry dude!)

HUGH JACKMAN IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF COMICS

RAVER written by Walter Koenig, published by Malibu

I’ll reveal another piece of my discussion with Joe later, but talking to him got me to thinking about my own past. During the early days of Malibu Comics, the “partners” (Scott, Dave, Tom and Chris) would have long exhaustive discussions about steps we might be able to take to us the power of media celebrities to get Malibu Comics noticed. We seemed to have this kind of talk every couple of months. We even did a comic book with actor/writer Walter Koenig of Star Trek fame, with limited results.

In the recent history of comics, there is example after example after example of attempts to leverage celebrity to draw attention to a comic … less so to comics in general.

Over at Heidi MacDonald’s BEAT (which I support with a double-dose of fanatic applause) she wrote the following:

“Second: Back in The Dark Ages, for decades, comics folk thought that a “Milk Board” — an industry advocacy arm that would put together promotional efforts featuring celebs who said they read comics — might help raise the profile of the medium to the general public. In fact, entire organizations were formed to work towards this milk board, before petty differences or inertia would inevitably end the efforts.

And now, it’s almost like the Milk Board came to us.

So, once again….yay us!”

Jackman's MILK BOARD advertisement. CLICK ME ... I'M A LINK!

BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER … THANK YOU HUGH JACKMAN!

Sure it was big when Hugh Jackman’s Swordfish co-star Hallie Berry (did they do any other movies together? showed up at Comic Con International to promote the Catwoman movie. To me it just doesn’t feel as big as Jackman/Wolverine looking into the camera and talking about how great comic books are for children and as a weapon against illiteracy.

There is a long list of celebrities that were more than willing to work in comic book movies who had no interest in supporting the comic book industry. We didn’t get this kind of thing from Christopher Reeve, Michael Keaton, Jack Nicholson or Gene Hackman. We didn’t get this from Patrick Stewart, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, Robert Downey, or even Samuel Jackson.

Hallie Berry and Hugh Jackman were together in SWORDFISH, plus some guy named Travolta

There isn’t any evidence that Hugh Jackman is a comic book fanatic, reader or collector. And yet there he stands, saying the words and conveying the ideas that Joe Field has waited 25 years to see. And many of us have waited side-by-side with Joe. Maybe those other celebrities would have done it if asked. The fact that comic book publishers didn’t have the guts, clout or reach to get this done before now is sad.

Thank you Hugh Jackman for saying “yes.”

COME BACK TO FUNNY BOOK FANATIC TOMORROW.

There is more (LOTS & LOTS MORE) aspects to this story, which I have yet to reveal, but this post has already gotten too long. I’m even skipping my regularly scheduled edition of The Gene Colan Project for this post.

That’s my version of the story.

“Maij.” The name sang from Sanaa’s lips. Her countenance brightened at the mention of the wonderful human being she had met the previous night.

“Wow,” the burly vampire behind the bar marveled. “I expected you to come here going on about your first day working for the Council, but instead you won’t shut up about this boy.”

Sanaa grinned sheepishly, burying her chin into her neck. Mac was never timid about pointing out her motivations. Even before the New Order had destroyed Sanaa’s clan, she had considered Mac her closest confidant. She met him two years ago, right after Jax tricked her into becoming his “pet.” Mac operated a Raver club just a mile away from Jax’s own club, and though he and Jax were polar opposites in personality, they were very good friends. They had often visited each other’s club on off nights, and for the last few months before the New Order bombed Jax’s club, Sanaa had spent more time with Mac than with her “master.”

In fact, Sanaa had been at Mac’s when the New Order struck her clan.

“The Council is a lot more laid back than everyone says,” Sanaa revealed. “I made, like, fifty mistakes today, and no one even mentioned ripping out my throat.”

“That’s because Edwin warned everyone about you. They knew what to expect.”

Sanaa scoffed. “Are you trying to insult me, Mr. Mac? It’s not going to work. I’m in too good a mood.”

“So I see.” Mac smiled gently as he dried shot glasses, but Sanaa could sense worry under his expression, which worried her. Mac was her paramount authority on life as a vampire. Ever since he unwillingly entered his immortal existence, Mac had encountered hardships Sanaa couldn’t begin to imagine; yet through it all, he never lost his humanity. Sanaa believed he was the only vampire ever to retain his human soul after being turned.

“So,” Mac probed, “this Maij is a good guy?”

Sanaa nodded so emphatically her hair fell over her eyes. “And we have so much in common. Our backgrounds aren’t that similar, but our outlooks on life are the same on, like, everything. And he’s so easy to talk to, too, which I, as you know, am not. I’ve never had such deep conversations with someone I just met—”

“How does he feel about vampires?”

Sanaa faltered. “Why does it matter?”

Mac crossed his arms over his broad chest, leaning against the back bar. He looked like a father reprimanding his child. “How does he feel about you wanting to be a vampire?” Sanaa averted her eyes. “Does he know you live and work with vampires?”

“Yes, he knows that,” Sanaa answered promptly, hoping to allay Mac’s interrogation. Unfortunately, Mac’s narrow eyes continued to search her. He was trying to read her thoughts, even though he didn’t have that ability.

“And?” Mac prodded. Sanaa refused to respond any further, but Mac didn’t need her to. “He doesn’t understand, does he?”

Sanaa quickly defended, “Everyone’s entitled to their own opinion. Just because he doesn’t understand why I want to be a vampire now doesn’t mean he never will.” She looked at Mac, finding it difficult, afraid she would see something in his face that proved her wrong. “Right?”

Mac enveloped Sanaa’s hands in his. Her skin was just as frigid as his in the freezing club, but a shiver ran down her spine. “I’m not going to tell you how to live your life,” Mac said, “or who to hang out with, but let me put it to you this way. If you’re looking for a successful relationship, find someone who wants the same life as you do. When a creature of our world takes as a companion someone who wants nothing to do with vampires, there’s only one inevitable outcome: heartbreak.”

Sanaa face fell. She had heard plenty of stories about vampires falling for steadfast humans who had no desire for a life of immortality. Every one of those tales ended unhappily ever after. Sanaa didn’t want to go through that. More importantly, she didn’t want to put someone as wonderful as Maij through that. She felt tears rushing to her eyes. She had really liked Maij.

Mac lifted Sanaa’s drooping chin. “I’m not saying any of this to make you sad. Just don’t get in too deep.”

Sanaa took a consoling breath. She felt so foolish for the endless daydreaming she had enjoyed, imagining herself with Maij. She resigned herself to the fact that there could be no future with him, regardless of how wonderful he seemed. It would probably be best for everyone if Sanaa simply never saw him again.

Sanaa was about to tell Mac her decision when she noticed his attention had traveled elsewhere. A middle-aged man dressed in Raver gear wandered the club, appearing incredibly out of place. Mac locked his cold eyes on the man. Sanaa noted a faint red glow in Mac’s pupils.

The man detected Mac staring at him. He approached, looking everywhere except directly at Mac. The man sidled up to the bar, taking the seat next to Sanaa, trying too hard to be nonchalant. Mac didn’t take his eyes off the man for a second.

The man leaned against the bar. His gaze continued to peruse the club, but his focus was on Mac.

Mac refused to play the man’s game. “What do you want?” he demanded gruffly.

Still refusing to look at Mac, the man responded, “I want what you have.” He turned his head toward Mac, still avoiding eye contact. “Immortality.” He spoke the word with such exaggerated drama that Sanaa had to stifle her laughter.

Mac slammed his fists onto the bar with a frightening bang. The man jumped, finally acknowledging Mac directly. “I hope you’re not the best the Council has,” Mac derided.

Sanaa’s jaw dropped. The man was one of the Council’s human consorts. She had heard of them. They acted as spies in Raver clubs, reporting to the Council which vampires were breaking the Queen’s laws. Sanaa wondered how long the man at her side had been in the consort business, because he sucked. Besides, he was wasting his time hassling Mac. The Council members themselves probably didn’t follow the laws as closely as Mac did.

Mac growled at the man. The man backed. Sanaa had to muster all her courage to restrain from following him. The vicious sound in addition to the vicious look on her friend’s face actually frightened her. Sanaa had never seen Mac that mad.

“I have an impeccable memory,” Mac said to the man. “I can remember with perfect precision every person I have encountered in the three hundred years I’ve been wandering this earth. Beggars, store clerks, people I simply passed on the street. If I ever see your face again, I will tear it off your skull. Go.”

The man scurried out of the club, perfectly capping his ridiculous display. Sanaa giggled. Mac grabbed a dishtowel and wiped every part of the counter the man had touched.

“When you go back to work,” he ordered Sanaa, “tell the Council to quit bugging me. Instead, maybe they could focus on the New Order bombs before they reach my club.”

            “What’s the New Order?”

Sanaa’s entire body jumped. She recognized that voice. Maij was standing right behind her. She started to smile, but she caught herself and wiped the elation from her face.

“How did you find me?” she demanded.

“I went to every vampire hangout I could find and asked about you.” Maij chuckled. “You never told me your nickname was Benedict Arnold.”

Sanaa snuck a peek at Mac. Some of the fierceness he had used on the man was still on his face.

“Most Ravers don’t like the Council,” she said. Sanaa turned Maij away from the bar. “You shouldn’t have done that. You could have been killed.”

Maij shrugged. “I wanted to see you again.” Sanaa’s heart melted.

“So this is Maij,” Mac said, purposely interrupting.

Maij nudged Sanaa. “You’ve been talking about me?” Sanaa hid her reddened face in her hand. Maij extended his hand toward Mac. “I didn’t catch your name.”

Mac crossed his arms, purposely rejecting the friendliness. “I didn’t throw it.”

Sanaa grabbed Maij’s arm before the situation could sour. “Let’s talk outside. See you later, Mac.”

“Remember what I said,” Mac warned.

Sanaa couldn’t forget. “I won’t,” she brushed off.

“See ya, Mac.” Maij pointed and winked. Mac’s glower intensified. Sanaa hurried Maij out of the club.

Once outside, Maij burst into laughter.

“He really doesn’t like me,” Maij observed.

“Don’t mind him,” Sanaa said as she combed her surroundings for hungry Ravers. The coast seemed clear. In a few minutes, the sun would rise and she wouldn’t have to fret at all. “I told him your opinion on vampires—”

“You couldn’t shut up about me, huh?” Maij smirked.

Sanaa blushed. “The subject simply arose. Seriously, though, you probably shouldn’t come to his club again. Ever.”

            “He’s that bad, huh?”

“He’s not bad at all,” Sanaa insisted. “It’s complicated. Anyway, what did you want to see me about?”

Without wavering, Maij slid his hand down Sanaa’s arm and into her hand. He tenderly interlaced their fingers. “Nothing. I just wanted to see you.”

Sanaa’s heart raced. She felt lightheaded, but she refused to lose herself in her emotions. Sanaa pulled her hand away. “I don’t know what impression you got last night about where this is heading, but it can’t go any further.”

Maij furrowed his eyebrows. He almost looked angry. “What are you talking about? I like you and you like me. Don’t deny it. Vampires aren’t the only ones who can sense how other people feel.”

“That’s just it,” Sanaa exclaimed. “You don’t know anything about vampires, and you don’t want to know. But all I want—all I’ve ever wanted—is to be a vampire. Unless you can understand that, there’s no way anything between us can work.”

“Are you sure that’s all you’ve ever wanted?”

Maij’s resolute stare thrashed her resistance. Sanaa nearly gave in, but she reminded herself that she had to do what was best for both of them. She managed to look directly into Maij’s eyes as she answered, “Yes.”

The rising sun illuminated Maij’s despair at her decision. His expression broke her heart, but she maintained her stone face. She waited for him to walk away, but he just stood there in disbelief. She’d never seen anyone so confused and determined at the same time.

Finally, he spoke. “We can still be friends, right?”

Every muscle in Sanaa’s body concurrently relaxed. She smiled.

Natürlich wurden hier wie immer nur totale Druffies gezeigt, die sich den ganzen Tag das Hirn mit einem lustig bunten Drogen-Mischkonsum wegschmelzen. Dennoch sehenswert.
