yes, rave. I wonder if a lot people know about this blog. Because instead of writing on my multiply blog, I will just write here, assuming that only a few people know this place. Anyway…

Relationships Again? I can’t get out of this topic because for one, it’s just plainly interesting to talk about. I’ve been serving a lot of friends by giving them advices and so on when it comes to relationships. Then I’ll use their scenarios for other friends who ask me stuff about it. I’m just surprised that most of my advices are working to think that I don’t have much background about it. Experience? nah. What’s awful with this kind of job is that when people are going well after your advice, you suddenly fade away from their view as if you’re a ghost and then go back when they seek you again. To me that’s pretty much disappointing.

DATING! I just remembered several stuff about dating. This is WOW!Philippines moment, actually. Here, there are several places where you can go for dates. Go for sophisticated places such as Eastwood, pretty handy if you are willing to spend big bucks which I don’t. More sophisticated in Makati, Greenbelt and Bonifacio High Street in Taguig. Ateneans tend to resort to Eastwood as it is the closest place from the university. Mehn, spending too much on dating, that’s tough.

And Ironically, that’s the catching factor in relationships nowadays. It’s not your capability to treat your partner for the day but the content of the treat and the sophistication. If you ask me, I’d rather go to place like Intramuros or…. or…….just Malls.  There might be a bit of sophistication but compare it to those mentioned above, I think it’s simple. Maybe you’re thinking I’m talking like this because I can’t afford something too sophisticated. I admit, I cannot. But what I cannot admit is that partners search for that glamour and high end names just for a date. I mean, I  am willing to burst a pocket when I’m married but while in a relationship? I don’t think so. That’s why it’s funny to see couples spend their entire time in such places and then watch them end up broken up. I would really laugh in front of them and say something like….um.. hi, stupid.

And that is why despite my rants about being someone like a Kuya makes me love the job. Couples that break up because of material things really makes it more spectacular to watch than pornography. Then make them realize their mistakes, their selfishness and so on. But at some point, I don’t like to mingle with stuff like that. Frankly, I love being a spectator instead of joining the event.

But to be serious? Most of the time I don’t care about having myself being, if you let me to be rude, “USED” as an advising organic bit. As long as I can help my friends, it’s fine with me. Sometimes they tell me to be a bit selfish because I’ve been helping people too much. From my point of view, I haven’t given enough help.

This is weird, actually. I know what to answer when people ask me about their problems in relationships, but I can’t get myself a “relationship”, a love life. Hahahah~! Oh well, eating’s fun for now.

Salem is not known for its diversity when it comes to shopping. It seems to me that everything melds into one. Yes, there are a few exceptions, but for the most part Salem is just one big Wal Mart. That is why, with great pleasure, I need to point out Taste of Europe, a specialty food market found in NE Salem at the Oak Park Plaza.

My family dragged, me kicking and screaming, out into the throes of Black Friday madness. OK, we left our house at 1:30pm, but it was not my idea of having a good time on a Friday afternoon – I was still digesting my Thankful meal from the day before.

When I spotted the Taste of Europe, found at 3284 Lancaster Dr NE # F, it was pure delight, and started to plan my escape from the role of cart-pusher at the fabric store at the Plaza.

The storefront is unassuming: At first glance, when peering through the window, it looks like a gift shop with brightly colored clocks and figurines taking up half the space of the store. I went in anyways to check it out, and once inside the aromatic sweetness came forth; the smell was not strong, like some fish or meat markets, but deli-cate and deli-ghtful. The aroma was predominately of smoked and cured meats found in an eight- foot cooled deli case. Some of these meats I have never heard of before and have never seen in Salem until today. Sausages and Bologna were plentiful, yet they also carry bacon and what looked like salt pork. Other meats, also, rounded out the mix.

 Next to the meats was a four-foot case of cheeses. Not a large selection, and mostly soft, white cheeses, but it complimented the meat section nicely.

Moving through the store to the left, I came upon another four-foot case filled with smoked and pickled fish. Some of the fish were smoked whole, but looked appetizing. For instance, smoked trout was butterflied so as to lay the fish flat, exposing its rich smoked meat in an artful display; whole smoked mackerel lay in straight rows and showed off the fish’s horizontal natural markings; and, anchovies were draped into a bowl and looked fluid and fragile.

Moving away from the cases to the isles with grocery style shelving, there were jar upon jar of pickled and canned goods. Specialty items jumped out at me: Assorted wild mushrooms in brine; Babushka (baby) pickles; sweet roasted peppers; honey complete with comb (a U.S. product). One big section of cookies and crackers looked out of place, but not so much as to be an eyesore. A variety of unique breads and rolls were set low along the deli cases framing-in the display nicely.

All in all, my short time spent at the store was a pleasant experience. The clerk was very nice and answered my few questions eagerly. The one thing that I did notice from the products and the clientele was that The Taste of Europe was more of a taste of Greater Russia.

With, perhaps, a more diverse European offering, this store could dominate Salem’s specialty food market.

Why, hello there, kind sir or madam. This is the blog, as far as James Cohen can tell, of James Cohen. James Cohen happens to be me, by the way- excuse the third-person, for I can be quite annoying that way.

My name is James. This is surprising to you. Or maybe it shouldn’t be. I’m not quite sure. I’m fifteen, I live in Pennsylvania, and I’m a writer and a brown belt in Okinawan Goju Ryu Karate. It’s the only real athletic activity I do, outside of jogging.

This blog exists for a few reasons:

• - I have far too much time on my hands.
• - I talk about myself far too much.
• - I felt like creating it.

The name, ‘Dreaming‘, came from the fact that I am, in fact, a dreamer. I also created this blog for to see how much I could manage to describe other people, using things people can connect to, in order to, I don’t know, make some kind of connection. It’s also why there is the link, “I Wish Someone Would Say“.  Everyone wishes someone would say something, and many times, people don’t. “I wish someone would say they love me,” “I wish someone would say it was okay, ” “I wish someone would say that I could have a MILLION FUCKING COOKIES and never gain any calories.” However, I’m beginning to wonder if “Thingsleftunsaid.WordPress.com” may have been a better choice. Eh, in my opinion, that sounds far too emo.

What I’m going to be putting up on here are rants, raves, articles, story ideas, story chapters (maybe), and just me talking about my life in general. It will be both a place for me to archive my writing ideas and writing itself, and a place where I can chronicle my own life- in widely general terms, since obviously other people can read it.

In other news, I experienced ’sparkling water’ for the first time last night. Throughout the course of my meal I faced an internal battle. Unsure of whether I liked this liquid, I was continually debating with myself.

‘I don’t get it, OK, one more sip’
‘Seriously what the fuck, I can’t not like it, it tastes like water’
‘WHY IS IT LIKE THIS?’
‘I need normal water’
‘Just drink it Lynette’

In short, No. I do not like it. Nor do I ‘get’ it. Seriously, what the fuck is with sparkling water. ISN’T NORMAL WATER GOOD ENOUGH FOR YOU? I feel my disliking is unjustified as, well, it tastes like water. Maybe it’s just too fancy for me.

I know the previous post was pretty angsty. That’s as good as it gets when you’re pissed off, at least i didn’t suffer from a writer’s block.

Today was simply great! My day started out with Meepok at Simpang Bedok. That’s lunch, because i woke up at 1130. And by evening, i met up with my favourite crazy friend, Evan for gym at Great World City.

I can’t rave enough about how serene and ‘exclusive’ Great World City is to me. It may be located in the central but it’s not one of those places many ppl flock to. I don’t know why. That is why it feels very ‘exclusive’.

I had the bestest dinner ever. It was my favourite place at Kenny Roger’s. How can anyone not like chicken and salad right? Not unless you’re a vegetarian freak. Go away, don’t become my friend. I love how all the sides compliment every single thing that’s on the plate. Argh! Can i like eat that everyday? So in love with the corn nibblets, which unfortunately, Evan detests. Such a pity, she doesn’t know what she’s missing out on.

P.S Cafe was our next stop. Can’t stop thinking about their desserts!!!! Seriously orgasmic chocolate cake, which as expected neither of us could polish it up. Too rich, but definitely great until the 5th bite.

This obviously is not an attempt to write a food review; it would otherwise constitute as a futile attempt. No pictures, no detailed description. Let’s just say, this is a food tweet, only slightly more than 140 characters. Heh

Hang around a school long enough and you will get a feel for its mission, what the school is really like down to its foundation.  Curiously, you can’t fully decipher the school’s ethos from its brochures or official mission statement.  Instead, you get a feel for the place mostly by watching the school’s leaders—how they lead, internally and externally. 

For instance, if you listen carefully to the head of school or the division director—how they speak, how they write, and how they behave in a crisis—you will see themes and values at work.  I hesitate from calling these themes fully formed educational philosophies; rather, they’re more like carefully timed messages about who the school is and what the community stands for.

Good-to-great leaders in the educational world often have good instincts about children and teaching, and a hard to describe competitive quality.  Let’s call it “edge.” Leaders, whether they like it are not, will find themselves perpetually out on a limb with a megaphone.  Story-telling may not make the leader, but very bright people have been undone by their inability to articulate a message.

School leaders don’t wing it or make it up as they go along. Instead, they work on their stories and test limbs before they venture out with the microphone. School leaders who don’t venture far from their school’s mission statements in their speaking and writing endeavors—those who play it safe all the time—are usually dull and ineffective leaders.

Here’s an anecdote about a head coach and a tale he told his players the night before the big game, which just happened to be the school’s first championship soccer match in half a century.  This story underscores the value of telling stories, the importance of remembering who your audience is, and the power of having a little “edge.”  All great schools are made up of leaders who know how to discharge a carefully timed message.

The kids are on the bleaches. It’s the end of practice, the last practice before the championship game, and the coach launches into another one of his stories.  The kids groan because they love to hate his stories.

“Last night I was watching this movie where this guy falls in love with the most beautiful girl in town.  You know the kind of girl I’m talking about.  She’s the type you sit behind in math class.  She keeps your mind off of class for the entire period.”  There are a few chuckles at this comment, but the coach shoots the whole team a sidelong glance, as if someone blew wind in church.

“So this guy falls in love with this beautiful girl, but she won’t go out with him until he promises to light a candle beneath her window each night for a 100 nights, what English teachers call ‘holding a vigil.’  Don’t ask me why she wants him to do this—she just does.”  The coach has a soccer ball at his feet.  He flicks it into the air and catches it in his hand.

“Anyway, the boy knows right where this girl lives.  So each night he appears beneath her window, lights a candle, and waits for her to appear.  Sometimes she appears, sometimes she doesn’t.  She’s a bit of a tease, if you know what I mean.”

“Ten nights go by, then 20, then 30, then 50.  Of course the boy gets tired but he keeps showing up and lighting those candles.  The girl’s worth it.   Eventually the 95th night rolls by.  Then 96, 97, 98, 99 . . . and on the 100th night, there’s the boy beneath the girl’s window. But a moment before midnight, a split-second before his goal is attained, the boy blows out the candle and goes home.”

The coach appears to be finished with the story.  No one moves from the bleachers.  Finally someone builds up enough courage to ask What Happens, does the boy get the girl or what? 

“No, he doesn’t get the girl,” the coach growls.  “He goes home and gets a good night’s sleep because he has a championship soccer game to win!”  And at that moment there is a collective burst of energy as the front row lunges up from the bleachers and tackles the coach in mock-anger.  The ball comes loose and rolls away.  Practice is over.  There won’t be another one—nor another story—for nine months.  The next day the team wins the championship, but years later it is the story that resonates deeply in memory.

This story has edge.  This coach has what educational literature calls “a teachable point-of-view.”  He often tells stories, so his charges have gotten into the habit of listening to him.  It also helps immensely that this coach knows the game; he’s wearing soccer cleats, he knows how to flick balls up into the air, he knows how to juggle.  He knows how to walk the walk and talk the talk.  I think this is an important message for any school leader.  Don’t tell—or tackle—a story if it’s not your style, or true to your own “voice” as a leader-learner.

This story above expresses values and is full of ideas, although the coach has cleverly disguised his message until the final moment.  What could be more valuable and important to a group of teenaged boys than winning the girl of their dreams?  I suppose the coach could be accused of being a little sexist, but he is certainly aware of his audience and the context (practice field, getting dark, day before the championship game).  The coach could have merely told his players how important it was to win the big game, but that “message” wouldn’t have been nearly as memorable or powerful as the story about the boy who tosses the girl aside in order to go home and get a good night’s sleep.

Educational writer Stephen Denning speaks about “the sparking action type of story” but he ties it primarily to “getting people to change.”  But school leadership is not always about sparking action for change.  Often it’s about knowing your audience and getting everyone on the same page and excited about moving forward long after little changes have accumulated, or after the big change has been made.  I call these “HOO-RAH!” stories with “HOO-RAH” messages (a reference to Al Pacino in The Scent of Woman).  Stories only excite if they tap into a common well of experience, which is why knowing your audience and your subject is so important.

And finally, the story above is really an example of taking risks.  The coach is not afraid to be a little irreverent.  He’s not afraid to use a story to achieve an explicit teaching/coaching end.   He’s not afraid to be wrong (because some of his stories fall flat on their faces).  He’s not afraid to insert a good story into any conversation or endeavor, whether it’s on the soccer field or in the classroom or in the meeting room.  This is his teachable point-of-view.  Every effective leader I know is good at telling stories.

The posting of the government climate alarmist scientists’ e-mails on the internet only confirms what thousands of scientist already know, man made global warming is a hoax.

Climate changes all the time and is naturally caused with man’s impact on climate very small compared with the sun, cosmic rays, volcanic erruptions, oceans, clouds, and water vapor just to name a few of the more important drivers or causes of climate change.

The vast majority of the American people no longer believe that man or humans are the cause of climate change:

Nearly half the nation’s voters still believe that global warming is caused primarily by long term planetary trends, not human activity.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey shows that 47% of voters blame global warming on planetary trends, while 37% of voters take the opposite view and blame human activity. Just 5% point to some other reason.

Any politician of either the Democratic or Republican Party that votes for the Cap and Trade Energy Tax bill should be targeted for defeat the next time they are up for re-election.

The proponents of taxing carbon emissions are simply perpetuating a criminal  scam on the American people using climate change or global warming as an excuse to take the American people’s hard earned money.

This is theft by government with progressive radical socialists in the Democratic Party and their corporate supporters being unindicated co-conspirators in the crime of the century.

The jig is up and the scientists involved have been caught red handed cooking the climate datasets used to create a planetary crisis of global warming.

Alternative energy investments promoted by green venture capitalists and  investment bankers should be viewed as investment fraud as well.

Alternative energy investment promoters failed to provide due diligence in demanding that the datasets used in climate models be independently verified. 

Alternative energy investment promoters failed to inform investors that the results or projections of computer climate models did not agree with  empirical observations from weather satellites.

The progressive radical socialists used the junk science of computer climate models to try to persuade the American people that a cap and trade system was needed to slow down and stop global warming that was supposively caused by man’s carbon dioxide emissions.

This political scam is now also exposed as a gigantic houx on the American people to have the government steal their money by an energy tax–cap and trade.

The cap and trade energy tax if passed would have destroyed jobs, wrecked the US economy and killed the American dream.

The whistle blower and/or hacker who posted the scientist e-mails for all to see should be given the Nobel Peace Prize for saving mankind from the greatest political scam, investment fraud, and scientific scandal of the century.

This will never happen for the very people who gave Al Gore and the IPCC or Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Nobel Peace Prize were in on the houx. 

In America they are called progressive radical socialists.

In Europe they are called social democrats or socialists.

They are collectivists who will cheat, lie, and steal their way for power and money.

The American people are slowly but surely waking up to the sad fact they have elected a gang of criminals that are robbing them blind.

TGIF asked Jones about the controversial email discussing “hiding the decline”, and Jones explained what he was trying to say….

So the 1079 emails and 72 documents seem indeed evidence of a scandal involving most of the most prominent scientists pushing the man-made warming theory – a scandal that is one of the greatest in modern science. I’ve been adding some of the most astonishing in updates below – emails suggesting conspiracy, collusion in exaggerating warming data, possibly illegal destruction of embarrassing information, organised resistance to disclosure, manipulation of data, private admissions of flaws in their public claims and much more. If it is as it now seems, never again will “peer review” be used to shout down sceptics.

This is clearly not the work of some hacker, but of an insider who’s now blown the whistle.

Not surprising, then, that Steve McIntyre reports:

“…These e-mails show, among many other things, private admissions of doubt or scientific weakness in the global warming theory. In acknowledging that global temperatures have actually declined for the past decade, one scientist asks, “where the heck is global warming?… The fact is that we can’t account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can’t.” They still can’t account for it; see a new article in Der Spiegel: “Climatologists Baffled by Global Warming Time-Out.” I don’t know where these people got their scientific education, but where I come from, if your theory can’t predict or explain the observed facts, it’s wrong.

More seriously, in one e-mail, a prominent global warming alarmist admits to using a statistical “trick” to “hide the decline” in temperatures. Anthony Watts provides an explanation of this case in technical detail; the “trick” consists of selectively mixing two different kinds of data-temperature “proxies” from tree rings and actual thermometer measurements-in a way designed to produce a graph of global temperatures that ends the way the global warming establishment wants it to: with an upward “hockey stick” slope.

Confirming the earlier scandal about cherry-picked data, the e-mails show CRU scientists conspiring to evade legal requests, under the Freedom of Information Act, for their underlying data. It’s a basic rule of science that you don’t just get to report your results and ask other people to take you on faith. You also have to report your data and your specific method of analysis, so that others can check it and, yes, even criticize it. Yet that is precisely what the CRU scientists have refused.

But what stood out most for me was extensive evidence of the hijacking of the “peer review” process to enforce global warming dogma. Peer review is the practice of subjecting scientific papers to review by other scientists with relevant expertise before they can be published in professional journals. The idea is to weed out research with obvious flaws or weak arguments, but there is a clear danger that such a process will simply reinforce groupthink. If it is corrupted, peer review can be a mechanism for an entrenched establishment to exclude legitimate challenges by simply refusing to give critics a hearing. …”

“…This is an enormous case of organized scientific fraud, but it is not just scientific fraud. It is also a criminal act. Suborned by billions of taxpayer dollars devoted to climate research, dozens of prominent scientists have established a criminal racket in which they seek government money-Phil Jones has raked in a total of £13.7 million in grants from the British government-which they then use to falsify data and defraud the taxpayers. It’s the most insidious kind of fraud: a fraud in which the culprits are lauded as public heroes. Judging from this cache of e-mails, they even manage to tell themselves that their manipulation of the data is intended to protect a bigger truth and prevent it from being “confused” by inconvenient facts and uncontrolled criticism.

The damage here goes far beyond the loss of a few billions of taxpayer dollars on bogus scientific research. The real cost of this fraud is the trillions of dollars of wealth that will be destroyed if a fraudulent theory is used to justify legislation that starves the global economy of its cheapest and most abundant sources of energy.

This is the scandal of the century. It needs to be thoroughly investigated-and the culprits need to be brought to justice.”

Climategate: the final nail in the coffin of ‘Anthropogenic Global Warming’?

Even Monbiot says the science now needs “reanalyising”

“… Even George Monbiot, one of the fiercest media propagandists of the warming faith, admits he should have been more sceptical and says the science now needs to be rechecked:

It’s no use pretending that this isn’t a major blow. The emails extracted by a hacker from the climatic research unit at the University of East Anglia could scarcely be more damaging. I am now convinced that they are genuine, and I’m dismayed and deeply shaken by them.

Yes, the messages were obtained illegally. Yes, all of us say things in emails that would be excruciating if made public. Yes, some of the comments have been taken out of context. But there are some messages that require no spin to make them look bad. There appears to be evidence here of attempts to prevent scientific data from being released, and even to destroy material that was subject to a freedom of information request.
Worse still, some of the emails suggest efforts to prevent the publication of work by climate sceptics, or to keep it out of a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. As a new-ish photographer on the scene, I am constantly finding new products to try, new blogs to read, and awesome photographers that are truly inspiring. It’s so important to find things you love and share with other people. Let’s have a RAVE session about my oh-so-favorite blogs I follow.

Justin & Mary are an amazing photography team that reside in New England. I have a select group of 5 or so blogs that I frequent most days. Justin & Mary are at the top of the list. Not only are they SUPER talented, they also have these posts they call pancake sessions that are so incredibly helpful. The posts include user questions and honest (complete) answers. Justin & Mary love the idea of fellow photographers being FRIENDS, not competition. It’s not always easy starting a business on your own, but having the support and guidance of people who were once in your same shoes is invaluable. You can’t fake talent … there is no reason to feel threatened by someone who shares the same passion as you do. Share what you know and love, and you’ll find that others will do the same. I feel like this is a speech that should end with ‘Photographers Unite!’, but that would be too cheesy (even for me)!

Another photographer that I absolutely adore is Jasmine Star. She has the most amazing way with words. Her photos are beautiful and the stories she writes to coincide just glue me to the computer for far too long. Just like Justin & Mary, Jasmine embraces questions from other photographers. She tends to preface her FAQ blogs with things like I can’t believe people want to know things from ME and I’m like Are you kidding? You’re a genius when it comes to starting a successful photography business and building a brand.

The photographers above are amazing and have photos that reflect emotion and show such a talent for composition. I feel like that kind of talent will get you going, but they also have a certain spirit about them that attracts others and makes them want more.

Okay, and because no blog is complete without a photo. My little baby puppy, Molly, has been staring at me since I’ve started this blog. I needed to snap a photo … Then I wanted to know What happened to my little, precious, darling puppy? Well, she’s still all of those things, just maybe not so little anymore. Molls will be 6 months old on Wednesday, woo hoo!

Professor Life is Good is really fucking awesome. A lot of the things I like now come from his classes. Like Gertrude Stein. Started reading The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas. & I’m really liking it. Completely different from Tender Buttons but really charming. I wonder what it must have been like to belong to such a society. Of people like Matisse and Hemingway and Picasso and Bowles. Did they think they were brilliant?

I know Jo’s favorite book. The Unbearable Lightness of Being. I borrowed Chorahan’s copy and brought it with me to Germany, where it’s tucked quite comfortably away with my other mildewed books. I’m a few pages into that. And Rant, a Palahniuk paperback I bought for Max because it had a pretty cover.

We need a universal or near-universal hand signal to specifically mean that you’re sorry. A middle finger means fuck you pretty much anywhere. I could have raised my middle finger at the car that beeped at me for accidentally crossing over the bicycle-automobile traffic line but it would have been wrong because I was in the wrong. I wanted to make some sort of sorry gesture but I was already biking away. If fluttering ones fingers meant sorry I’d have totally done it. Because I was!

For homework last night, I gave myself a facial. Used this “pore refining, peel-off facial” masque from Bath & Body Works for $12. It dried on like Elmer’s glue, and smelled quite the same but minty. The glue goo only pulled out my facial peach fuzz. And now I’m missing parts of my eyebrow.

Ladies and gentlemen, I have been choclified…it’s been about 6 years already. I confess. I am an addict.

My besty calls me too much. There really isn’t enough blab in me to talk to her every hour on the hour. I couldn’t care less about the mundane minutiae of her daily routine. I have a 3 call per day rule that she constantly violates. I feel like we’ve just replaced our exes with each other, and I didn’t even like talking on the phone with him to begin with. I despise mediocre phone conversations and idle small talk. She also has a big problem with taking things waay too seriously, personal, or sensitively. She just needs to relax, and she doesn’t get that when I tell her. So pulse-in-my-neck confrontational. Maybe that’s why her ex had problems communicating to her. Then again, she could have done way better. I need an upgrade.

My ex-besty had chin hairs. They looked like pubes. We were only in high school. I noticed it on prom night. I kept my mouth shut, but I couldn’t stop staring.

I went from being passive to passive aggressive, and now, just plain aggressive.

Vent here. I don’t want to end up being the gal shotgunning pedestrians on her way to hell. Not yet, at least.

My aunt uses Alfredo sauce as a salad dressing.

It’s been said before, and I’ll say it again. I hate kids and I hate babysitting. Stupid, ugly, and/or sick people need to stop reproducing. They are ruining our gene pool, taking up space, and eating all our food.

I’m bored. I need more drama in my life. I’m hungry for more. And now I’m literally hungry. Hm, I wonder what’s for dinner.

I frequent several book stores in Salem. From the big box store, Borders, to the small Indies like the Book Habit, each have different qualities and pitfalls. Here are the three I visit often.

Borders

I’m in Borders habitually; sometimes two to three times a week. They are overpriced, have a mediocre selection in some of my favorite sections, and not nearly enough seating to accommodate everyone who wants to sit. Yet, they now have free Wi-Fi, Seattle’s Best Coffee, and great customer service.

Dave, at Seattle’s Best, is courteous, attentive, and an all around interesting guy. He also presses a pretty good espresso. He is one reason I keep coming back to Borders. Plus, it is my family’s favorite place to hang out on a Friday or Saturday night. It’s relaxing to be surrounded by others who are involved in reading, learning, and conversing. Also, their magazine selection is way above average even if some alternative periodicals are not included.

The Book Bin

The sometimes indifferent staff, no seating, no coffee and no food is a big turn-off for me. I’m surprised they have public restrooms. You sometimes get the feeling that they exist for themselves; looking to buy that one rare book that will make their week.

On the other hand, they have a great selection of used books, great prices, and buy used books with cash or credit towards future purchases. I especially like their cookbook and literature sections. Each section is arranged well.

Just don’t try and sit on the floor like my daughter did or you might get reprimanded quickly.

The Book Habit

This is one bookstore that you can trust for low prices, great location, and total chaos. The ill arranged sections will leave you baffled as to how even the owners find specific books. They are definitely better suited to online selling than to walk-in customers. I hate saying these things since the owner is such a nice guy and goes out of his way to make you deals.

What is needed in this case is a bigger location, other employees to help with organization, and maybe a espresso bar. That would be a big plus!

Part of the burgeoning Los Angeles rhythm & blues scene of the early 1950’s, the original Platters group consisted of Cornell Gunter, brothers Gaynel and Alex Hodge, Joe Jefferson and Curtis Williams. Formed in January 1953, the original line-up showed several early changes, with cab driver David Lynch replacing Joe Jefferson, Herb Reed (from the gospel group the Wings Over Jordan) replacing Curtis Williams and Tony Williams (introduced by his sister, Linda Hayes) replacing Cornell Gunter. Cornell Gunter went on to play an important part in the stories of the Flairs and the Coasters. His sister Shirley Gunter also sang with the Flairs and recorded with her own group, the Queens, on Modern.

They were signed by Ralph Bass to King subsidiary, Federal Records and, after an un-credited appearance behind Big Jay McNeely chanting the title on ‘Nervous Man Nervous’ (Federal 12141), the group appeared in the studio under their own name in October 1953. With so much homelessness and hunger in Oregon, the status of being #1 has new meaning.

But, there is a silver lining. Numerous private non-profit groups strive to make the lives of many more bearable. Agencies like Marion-Polk Food Share, the mother-ship for gathering and distributing food to other agencies, who in turn, feed those in need, is an indispensable non-profit that shines in the these times of economic darkness.

Other such agencies shine just as bright as MPFS. The better known agencies – Union Gospel Mission, The Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul – are backed by a network of lesser known, smaller agencies and numerous churches. Together, all these agencies have a common goal: Ending hunger and bettering the lives of many within our community.

A secondary goal of educating those in need is just as important. Many non-profits hold cooking and nutrition classes, distribute books, help in job searches, and provide other services to people in our communities.

My hat is off to all the volunteers and staff who provide exceptional service and selfless acts of support for those less fortunate.

My daughter (she’s fourteen) came home beaming yesterday. She had dropped all the change she had into the red Salvation Army kettle. It made her feel good to give. Try it; it might make you feel good, too. Or better yet, join the hundreds (perhaps thousands) of other volunteers who give their time to help others. It is a gift that won’t go unnoticed.
