What visions dance in his head?

It was a Christmas tradition to visit with Grandma on Christmas Eve and open presents.  Since she lived nearby, we visited frequently in general.  This picture was taken in December, 1957.  I would have been about 1 year old, and BigBroSteve would have been 4 1/2. 

On the table behind the telephone is a picture of Grandma’s youngest child as an adult.  His name was Cecil Paul but we always knew him as Uncle Pete.  He had redhair and freckles and was slight in stature. 

I love the look on BigBro’s face.  So I’ll just leave here quietly, and you all can enjoy the look of a child’s anticipation of Christmas….

This little shot was taken behind Grandma’s house.  I recognize what she called the pump house, made of brick with a slanted wooden roof.  She has wrapped her exposed pipes to protect them from freezing. 

Once again, I learn something new from old photos.  I did not know that anyone in our family had chickens.  The concrete pad to the left is the entrance to the smokehouse.  Grandma kept her home-canned goods stored there.  Green and shelley beans, tomatoes, and peaches were her standards. 

Now I’m hungry again.

BigBroSteve, December 1953

Future cowboy Steve is at Grandma Packett’s celebrating Christmas in 1953.  He’s about 7 1/2 months old here.  He was a big baby.  Mom said she started feeding strained meats to him when he was 6 weeks old because he was so hungry.  He wasn’t filling up on formula and cereal, so right to strained meats.  Doesn’t sound particularly appetizing, but apparently that did the trick.  A tired mother does what she has to do.

Grandma had that TV for years until she got a color one.  There’s the old floor model radio to the right of the tree.  On the corner hutch I see a picture of Millard James “Big Jim” Packett, who was Grandma’s oldest son.  The floor looks like it has a linoleum rug.  Back in the day rugs weren’t just made of fiber, they could be made of handsome linoleum which was easily cleaned.  It looks like someone put down a baby blankie for little Stevie to sit on so he wouldn’t get cold on the handsome linoleum floor.  If truth be known, Grandma probably has a roaring coal fire in the fireplace, and the room was hot as blazes. 

I appreciate not having to handle coal for heating the RV.  After all, I have Mr. Seabreeze Thermaflo, the hot Canadian.

In the original position, Rawls claims that the difference principle will be chosen as the guiding doctrine for distributive justice. This relies heavily on the veil of ignorance. In other words, the parties don’t know the distribution of primary goods under different principles of justice.

For the purposes of this post, assume that a distribution of primary goods could be mapped for the world under every principle of justice. Such a distribution would list all the people in the society and the amount of primary goods they would receive under the principle of justice being considered. The parties would know with what probability that would have a certain amount of primary goods. Armed with this knowledge, they would simply maximize and choose the principle that delivered the highest average amount of primary goods.

In coming posts, I am going to argue that no matter how Rawls depicts the initial choice situation, the difference principle will not result. For now though, I just want to take the first step and show that the parties cannot know the full distribution of primary goods that they face. Otherwise, their would be no reason for them not to maximize and thus pick the principle of maximizing the average.

Did I mention that my mother saved some stuff?

Back in 1957, when my hometown was celebrating its Golden Jubilee, the event was written up in one of the nearest big city papers, the “Knoxville Journal”.  This is dated Sunday, May 26, 1957.  I was a wee babe of 6 months old.  I remember it well.

The parade featured folks throwing candy from cars… back when it was safe to eat candy from strangers.  This shot was at the corner of Broadway and Kingston Street across from Goodwin’s Drug Store.

The newspaper article stated “Lenoir City residents have donned styles of 1907 to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the official incorporation of the Loudon County metropolis.  The fun has already begun and will be climaxed in August with a week’s long celebration.  The flivver pictured is actually a late model compared to the first automobile ever owned in Lenoir City.  C. H. Watson, who bought a two-cylinder job in 1906, became so disgusted when it stalled on a five percent grade, he raffled it off to some unfortunate Morristown man.”

The book review for "The Cat in the Hat"

THE CAT IN THE HAT.  By Dr. Seuss.  Random House.  $2. 

“The Cat in the Hat” — what an intriguing title for a beginning reader!  Here is the same delicious nonsense, hilarious fun, cumulative build-up, and surprise ending that distinguish one of America’s most original picture books, “And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street.”  In this reader Theodor Geisel has accomplished a tour de force.  With only 223 different words he has created a story in rhyme which presents an impelling incentive to read.  Parents and teachers will bless Mr. Geisel for this amusing reader with its ridiculous and lively drawings, for their children are going to have the exciting experience of learning that they can read after all.  The school edition is published by Houghton, Mifflin at $1.60.”

Here’s another picture that should have been posted with yesterday’s post.  Organization is not my strong point.  I should also be studying for a final next week, but, oh well, my public calls…

Here’s CowboySteve, not to be confused with Steven Stafford, stopping by from the cattle roundup, for a photo shoot with his “maw” and LilSis.  CowboySteve is about 5 years old.  LilSis is about 1 1/2 months, still with the warranty.  If this picture were in color, the walls would be industrial beige.  Good for Mom to have been able to find time to put on some lipstick and comb her hair, what with 3 children aged 5 and under, and one being a brandnew infant, and another being a poutypants like myself.  And there’s still BigBroBob and BigSisSandi lurking around somewhere.

This picture was made from that dandy little Brownie camera held at bellybutton height.  Any effort by my mother to roll her eyes is merely coincidental.  Bless her heart, she’s 40 years old.  I’d rather be 40 than pregnant, but Mom managed to do both.  I think she looks awesome.

Papa & me, age 2

My father was born on November 28, 1913.  I found these pictures dated November 1958.  It was about the time of my 2nd birthday, and my father’s 45th.  This was taken on the front porch of our house on Nichols Park Road. 

What's that face about??

As children, we were not allowed on the front porch.  The steps were steep and hard, and we would surely fall and get hurt.  This side of the house faced south, so there was plenty of sun for this late fall picture.  LilSis would be about 1 1/2 months old.  Mom was probably holding her, and that might have been what my frowny face was about.  Booted out of the crib at a tender age.

I was a voracious reader, and when I was in 4th grade, I read “Heidi”.  The father in the book was referred to as “Papa”.  I started calling my father “Papa”, he didn’t object, and there you have it.  History was made. 

He was a good, hard-working father.  He sat down to eat, read the newspaper, and watch television, but little else.  He always had a task at hand or was musing out the details of something.  If the end of the world came, you’d want to be with my father.  He could do anything, and he always took care of business.  He was a wonderful role model and an all-around good guy, with a startling sense of humor.  He participated in a church fund-raiser called a “Womanless Wedding”, and grinned all the way around while wearing a brown page-boy wig and green dress, a scaryfunny sight to see at 6′6″. 

The world is a better place because of the “Tall Man”.  He died in January 2006, and we will always miss him.

When I was in first grade, I was in love with Steven Stafford.  He was an adorable round-headed child with ears that stuck out of either side of his head.  His head looked like a round mug with two handles.  I suppose that God made him that way so that later in life his girlfriend could grab him by both ears, and…  well, you know, kiss him.  I never kissed him, but I wanted to, or so I professed to him in a love letter.

Whatever my motives, I had good penmanship and appropriate capitalization and excellent letter composition.  I think that I capitalized “Love” and “Kiss” and “Merry” because they were important to the theme of this composition.  Must make a mother proud. 

My mother saved some stuff.  “Some” means copious amounts.  This little work of art had been folded several times like school children do, top to bottom, side to side, and top to bottom again.  You can see remains of the coffee cup ring.  Apparently Mom liked this so much that she used it as a little coaster.  Ah, little Ruth Marie’s brought home more crap – that’s nice, honey – where’s my coffee cup.   

We were not supposed to use three-ring binder paper in 1st grade, only that special writing paper for beginning writers.  I remember that I wrote this note on special paper that I snagged from my older brother, and that the paper was tablet style with the two holes on the top.  I suppose that I intended to impress little Stephen with my worldly use of 4th grade style paper. 

After agreeing to love and kiss and merry me, little Stephen and his family left town sometime during the summer after 1st grade.  Gone, like a thief in the night, never to return. 

But, me, I still have this cool coaster.

Ruth & Becky

This picture was taken sometime during 1960.  I’m about 4 years old and Becky is about 2.  It appears that someone got a color camera, and that perhaps all pics moving forward in time will be in color.  This was made in the living room of our house on the “divan” as Mother called it.  I found out years later that it was just a couch.  And of course there’s the prerequisite crocheted afghan on the back of the divan.  I learned how to crochet once upon a time and thought that I would make a granny-square afghan similar to the one in the picture above.  Nope!  Too much work.  And all those little squares to keep up with until they could be stitched together with the black yarn….  Dante’s Inferno might have had a crocheted granny-square room in it.  I suppose they are holding a spot for me in the granny-square department in Hades. 

The divan had a matching chair.  Both were a nondescript beige nubby fabric made to withstand flamethrowers and small children.  My mother painted the walls four basic colors:  beige, eggshell, blue, or green.  My older sister made the comment once, after returning home from college, that the colors were “institutional”.  I didn’t know what that meant for a long time.  I suppose that she’s right, but I don’t know what other colors would be used.  Black-of-death?  Pepto-pink?  Red-orange-of-hell?  That was so last century.  The color of small children’s handprints would have been a big hit. 

Once upon a time, when pictures were being developed from film, the pictures were returned to you, by the developer, with the month and date stamped on them.  Like on the picture above where it says “Dec 60″ at the bottom of the picture.  In my family, and perhaps yours too, this was never an accurate way of determining when the photo was taken.  Cameras were used only on photo-opportunities, and never as casually as we use them today.  A roll of film could have 12, 24, or 36 pictures, at least the ones that I’m most familiar with in the 1970’s and ’80’s.  It might take a really long time to use up the entire roll, maybe even a year, but certainly always months.  So I doubt that the picture above was actually taken in December 1960.  I’m wearing short-sleeves, and Becky’s wearing a thin-looking dress. 

And as I’m zooming in on the photo to look at dress detail, I notice that I am picking at my cuticles.  In the picture, I am picking at my nails and I am four. 

Some days I am still four.

Fortsetzung zu Teil XIV a

Die Umsetzung der in Teil XIV a genannten Maßnahmen bedeuten für viele Menschen sowohl mit Arbeitsplatz wie auch mit dem Bezug von Sozialleistungen erhebliche finanzielle Verluste und setzt gerade die Bezieher kleiner bis mittlerer Einkommen, die durch fleißige Arbeit für sich und ihre Familien einen bescheidenen Wohlstand – auch zum Zweck der Alterssicherung – erworben haben, einer erhöhten Unsicherheit durch zukünftige Entwicklungen aus. Die in Teil IV beschriebenen, aus der Funktion der Erwerbsarbeit folgenden Grenzen für den Ansatz, die Rentabilität der Erwerbsarbeit durch eine Senkung der Arbeitskosten zu erreichen, werden auf diese Weise stark strapaziert. Es ist sogar zur Zeit noch durch das Bundesverfassungsgericht zu prüfen, ob die äußerste Grenze für die Rechtfertigung der ergriffenen Maßnahmen, die Garantie des Existenzminimums gewahrt ist. Rechtlich geschützt wird diese Grenze im Grundgesetz durch die Garantie der Menschenwürde (Art. 1 Grundgesetz) und das Sozialstaatsprinzip (Art. 20 Grundgesetz). Sie findet eine allgemeinere Entsprechung in dem ersten Gerechtigkeitssatz von Rawls, nach dem in einer gerechten Gesellschaft gleiche Grundfreiheiten für alle garantiert sein müssen.

Hoher Erfolgsdruck

Die grundsätzliche Rechtfertigung dieser Zumutungen durch die oben beschriebene Zielsetzung der Agenda 2010 unterliegt damit einem hohen Erfolgsdruck. Nur wenn die erhofften positiven Auswirkungen der Agenda 2010 bald und dauerhaft eintreten, kann sie tatsächlich als gerecht angesehen werden und so zumindest nachträglich auf ausreichend öffentliche Akzeptanz hoffen. Sollte es allerdings auch mit Hilfe der Einbußen vieler Menschen in Folge der Agenda 2010 nicht gelingen, den seit Ende der 1960er Jahre zu beobachtenden Abbau bezahlter Arbeitsplätze umzukehren sowie zumindest langfristig das allgemein nach wie vor formulierte Ziel der Vollbeschäftigung zu erreichen und damit auch die Grundlage der sozialen Sicherungssysteme zu sichern, dürfte das Folgen über das Schicksal der Agenda 2010 hinaus haben, auch wenn die ergriffenen Maßnahmen durch die momentane schwarz-gelbe Regierung aller Voraussicht nach unabhängig von der weiteren Entwicklung nicht grundlegend verändert werden dürften.

Kurze Bilanz und Ausblick in die Zukunft

Bislang hat sich in Folge der Reformen eine zaghafte Verbesserung der Lage am Arbeitsmarkt ergeben, wenn auch frühere Arbeitslosenzahlen nach der im Zuge der Agenda 2010 vorgenommenen Änderung der statistischen Zählweise nicht ohne weiteres mit den heutigen vergleichbar sind. Allerdings kann diese Entwicklung in Anbetracht von etwa 3 Millionen Menschen ohne Arbeit selbst auf dem Höhepunkt der vergangenen Aufschwungphase nur ein bescheidener Anfang sein. Es muss sich erst noch zeigen, wie schwer sich die weltweite wirtschaftliche Krise auf den Arbeitsmarkt auswirken wird und wie er sich nach ihrer Überwindung weiter entwickelt.

Ist die damalige Situation richtig gedeutet worden?

Allerdings habe ich aufgrund meiner in Teil VII formulierten These Zweifel, dass die Situation Anfang dieses Jahrtausends richtig gedeutet worden ist. Habe ich damit recht und ist die beobachtete Arbeitslosigkeit eigentlich aufgrund der Verdrängung der Erwerbsarbeit durch Maschinen entstanden, dürfte auch die Agenda 2010 mittel- bis langfristig nicht in der Lage sein, das Problem der Arbeitslosigkeit zu lösen. Eine weitere Verschärfung der Maßnahmen würde allerdings mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit die Sinnhaftigkeit deutlich in Frage stellen, die Verteilung von Einkommen sowie die Finanzierung der sozialen Sicherungssysteme derart von der Möglichkeit der Menschen, Erwerbsarbeit auszuüben, abhängig zu machen. Man kann die Agenda 2010 gewissermaßen als einen Versuch ansehen, dieses System in einer sinnvollen Form zu erhalten. Sollte dieser Versuch scheitern (wofür nach meinen bisherigen Überlegungen viel spricht), muss die hier betrachtete Institution der gesellschaftlichen Grundstruktur, die Verteilung von Einkommen grundlegend anders geregelt werden, denn eine Ausgestaltung dieser Institution, die einen Teil der Menschen dauerhaft ausgrenzt und benachteiligt, ist nicht akzeptabel.

Agenda 2010 als Argument für eine grundlegende Reform der Verteilung von Einkommen

Eine solche Neugestaltung wäre unabhängig davon, wie sie genau aussieht, eine äußerst weitreichende Veränderung der allgemeinen Lebensbedingungen, die in einer Demokratie mit Rechtsstaatlichkeit zu ihrer Legitimation eine breite Zustimmung durch die Bevölkerung benötigt. Dies setzt wiederum voraus, dass eine offene Diskussion darüber stattfindet, welche Möglichkeiten zur Auswahl stehen und welche davon letztlich zu ergreifen ist. Die Bereitschaft eines ausreichend großen Teils der Bevölkerung, zur Erreichung einer gerechteren Form der Verteilung von Einkommen wenn nötig auch eine Abkehr von dem momentanen System der Erwerbsarbeit mitzutragen, wird um so eher erreichbar sein, je ernsthafter zuvor versucht worden ist, dieses System durch Veränderungen zu erhalten. Möglicherweise ist dies am Ende die eigentliche Rechtfertigung für die Agenda 2010, auch wenn das ihren Initiatoren kaum bewusst gewesen sein dürfte.

This picture was made at Grandma Packett’s.  The date on the picture is April 1957, so I’m guessing it’s Easter.  I’m about 4 months old here.  Grandma had a large dining room table with ladder back chairs that Cousin Gordie has now.  The table was a good place for a small child to make a hideaway under.  Once I took some of Grandma’s postage stamps that she kept in a Lazy Susan on the table and hid under the table and licked each and every stamp and stuck them under the table. 

I got caught.

I don’t know what the meal was in this photo, but I see biscuits!  Always homemade!  There was probably a sugar-cured ham and green beans and mashed potatoes.  That might be a cake on a cake stand in the middle of the table but I just can’t be sure.  I think I might have some more pictures of this day, but I’ll have to sort thru some stuff and match up the dates on the pictures.

I need to go eat some food now.  My mouth is watering…

Die damalige Bundesregierung sah sich von der in Teil XI beschriebene Situation auf dem Arbeitsmarkt Anfang des neuen Jahrtausends veranlasst, die Agenda 2010 auszuarbeiten und umzusetzen. Die damit verbundenen unmittelbaren Auswirkungen bedeuteten zunächst einmal, die Ungleichheit zwischen den Menschen bei der Verteilung von Einkommen zu vergrößern. Gerechtfertigt wurden die beschlossenen Maßnahmen mit dem Hinweis auf die stetig steigende Zahl von Menschen, die unter den zuvor gegebenen Rahmenbedingungen von der gesellschaftlichen Teilhabe ausgeschlossen waren und auf den durch sinkende Beschäftigungszahlen befürchteten Verlust der Leistungsfähigkeit des Sozialsystems. Es war die politische Einschätzung der damaligen Bundesregierung, dass eine weitere Verteuerung der Ausübung von Erwerbsarbeit diese problematischen Entwicklungen eher noch verschärft als beseitigt hätte.

Bei abstrakter Betrachtung grundsätzlich gerechtfertigt

Das erklärte Ziel der unter dem Begriff Agenda 2010 zusammengefassten Maßnahmen war es, die Kosten für die Ausübung von Erwerbsarbeit zu senken, damit der zuvor beobachtete Abbau von Arbeitsplätzen umgekehrt werden würde. Es sollte den Menschen, die vor der Veränderung der Rahmenbedingungen keine Möglichkeit zur Ausübung von Erwerbsarbeit mehr hatten, wieder ermöglicht werden, ihren Lebensunterhalt durch bezahlte Arbeit sicherzustellen. Damit verbunden sollten diese Menschen von Empfängern staatlicher Transferleistungen zu Beitragszahlern werden und so die sozialen Sicherungssysteme auf doppelte Weise stärken. Nach dieser grundsätzlichen Zielsetzung der Agenda 2010 wurde eine Verschärfung der Ungleichheit bei der Verteilung von Einkommen in Kauf genommen, um mittel- bis langfristig die Bedingungen der Menschen ohne Erwerbsarbeit, das heißt derjenigen mit den geringsten Einkommen zu verbessern und den Fortbestand der solidarischen Sozialversicherungssysteme sicherzustellen. Betrachtet man die reine Zielsetzung, ist damit meiner nach Ansicht die Agenda 2010 auch unter den Bedingungen des egalitären zweiten Gerechtigkeitsgrundsatzes von Rawls im Grundsatz gerechtfertigt, denn die erwarteten Auswirkungen der in Teil XI beschriebenen Situation hätte vor allem den schwächsten in der Gesellschaft weitaus größere Nachteile gebracht, als die mit der Agenda 2010 verbundenen Eingriffe. Eine abschließende Bewertung setzt allerdings einen Blick auf die konkret ergriffenen Maßnahmen (ohne Anspruch auf Vollständigkeit) sowie ihre tatsächlichen Folgen voraus, die bereits eingetreten sind und die aller Voraussischt nach eintreten werden.

Die wichtigsten Maßnahmen der Agenda

Im Rahmen der Agenda 2010 wurden zunächst die bereits früher begonnenen sogenannten “Bündnisse für Arbeit” unter der Beteiligung von Gewerkschaften und Arbeitgeberorganisationen weiter fortgeführt. Dies waren im Kern Vereinbarungen der Sozialpartner, nach denen die einen Seite sich zur Zurückhaltung bei der Lohnentwicklung verpflichtete, um im Gegenzug mehr Beschäftigung zu erreichen.

Zusätzlich sollten die gesetzlich geregelten sozialstaatlichen Institutionen so fortentwickelt werden, dass sie stärker auf Menschen ohne Arbeit einwirken, um gerade diejenigen, die bereits den Bezug zur Arbeitswelt verloren hatten, eher zu einer Entscheidung für den (Wieder-) Einstieg zu bewegen. Dazu wurde die Bezugsdauer des Arbeitslosengeldes (nunmehr ALG I genannt) vor allem für ältere Arbeitnehmer verringert, um – so die Hoffnung – den Anreiz für die Annahme auch geringer bezahlter Beschäftigungen zu erhöhen. Arbeitsfähige Bezieher von Sozialhilfe sollten in das System der arbeitsmarktbezogenen Transferleistungen integriert werden, indem die bis dahin getrennten Leistungen der Arbeitslosen- und Sozialhilfe für diesen Personenkreis zum Arbeitslosengeld II (ALG II) zusammengefasst wurden. Die Regelsätze dieses ALG II liegen niedriger als die der alten Arbeitslosenhilfe und etwas höher als die der alten Sozialhilfe. Bevor ein Anspruch auf ALG II besteht, muss in stärkerem Maße als zuvor zunächst privates Vermögen verbraucht werden. Die Kontrolle, ob die Voraussetzungen für den Bezug von ALG II vorliegen, beziehungsweise weiter bestehen, sollte erhöht werden, um nicht gerechtfertigte Transferleistungen zu vermeiden. Mit dem Bezug von ALG II sollte die Verpflichtung verbunden sein, in stärkerem Maße als zuvor angebotene Arbeit anzunehmen, selbst wenn diese nicht der ursprünglichen Ausbildung der jeweiligen Person entspricht und niedriger bezahlt wird. Empfänger von ALG II sollten außerdem stärker als bislang verpflichtet werden, gemeinnützige Arbeit gegen eine bloß symbolische Bezahlung zu verrichten. Insgesamt sollten so Mittel eingespart und der Anreiz zur Aufnahme bezahlter Arbeit erhöht werden. Durch die Zusammenlegung von Arbeitslosen- und Sozialhilfe hoffte man außerdem, diesen Bereich einfacher zu gestalten, um so personelle Ressourcen zur Verfügung zu haben, mit denen die Vermittlungstätigkeit der Arbeitsverwaltung verbessert werden sollte. Daneben wurden private Arbeitsvermittler stärker einbezogen und die Möglichkeiten für Leiharbeit wurden ausgeweitet.

Obwohl nicht direkt eine Maßnahme im Rahmen der Agenda 2010, kann man zusätzlich auch die in der großen Koalition im Anschluss an die Regierung Schröder/Fischer eingeführte Rente mit 67 in diese Reihe einfügen. Diese Maßnahme soll helfen, den zu erwartenden Anstieg der Beiträge zur gesetzlichen Rentenversicherung stabil zu halten, was sich ebenfalls dämpfend auf die Arbeitskosten auswirkt.

Soweit meine abstrakte Bewertung und die kurze Aufzählung von Einzelmaßnahmen, die sich unter der Überschrift Agenda 2010 zusammenfassen lassen. Jede einzelne dieser Maßnahmen ist in der Vergangenheit bereits in der Öffentlichkeit kontrovers diskutiert worden. Mein weiterer Blick soll sich stärker auf eine Gesamtschau der ergriffenen Maßnahmen richten. Dies soll, um das Blogpost nicht zu lang werden zu lassen, in einem Teil XIV b erfolgen (zu dem man hier gelangt).

LilSis sent this photo via her fancypants mobile phone.  It’s the Rawls Hall, a women’s residence hall at the University of Memphis.  She’s going Sherlock Holmesian on this matter to find out how this spot was named after our daddy.

These pictures were taken in May 1957.  I was about 5 months old.  This was the day of my christening.  I recognize the outfit from another picture with Mother and me (but I don’t know where that pic is…). 

But this post is not about my christening, it’s about an *AHA* moment.  Irma was from a large, close family.  She told stories of growing up, and how she would go to a neighbor’s house who kept every newspaper that she ever had on her porch, and that Irma could sit and read the funny papers.  She could leave the stack of newspapers when she was finished with a sitting, and when she went back to read again, the newspapers would be sitting there untouched, waiting for her to read some more.  I never knew where Irma was from, but I did know that her father was Paul Young and that he was Scandinavian. 

I’ve had some correspondence on this blog from a pet store owner in Thomson, GA.  I had never heard of this town so I looked it up on the map and found that it is near Augusta, GA.  So someday I’d like to go to Thomson, GA, and visit the store and see the area.  While touring small towns might not sound like fun to some, I find that it’s much more fun than going to the mall.  See the USA in a Chevrolet and all that. 

Well, I decided to make a family tree for Irma’s family.  She and Will didn’t have children, so somebody’s got to do it, and basically I’m just nosey.  I found Irma and her family on several censuses.  Her father was a brick mason.  And they lived. in. wait. for. it. Thomson.  GA. 

Now, how does a random person reading my little blog just happen to live in a little town that I’ve never heard of until a couple of months ago, and it’s just the same town where one of my favorite people in the whole world is from? 

Maybe it’s not AHA, maybe it’s just AAAAHHH…

So now I definitely have to go to Thomson, GA.  And maybe pick up a brick or two.
