Who doesn’t want a festive ray gun to spell out “Merry Christmas?” Andrew Colunga has created this ray gun for just that purpose. This is so retro-classic space. I could totally see this in some B-movie from the 50’s.

These are bumper animations for DC Classics, the DVD brand that rereleases classic DC Comic television shows.

Here are previous comments that I took under consideration and for you to review:

1. SMOKE: I think the smoke being pushed out should pushed further out from the source. Right now it just gathers around the source area…have it pillow into the logo right away.

2. TRAPPED: Animation is good. You need to introduce the shaker hands slower….then have them shake around the logo. I dont want you to change the timing…just take away some time from the shaking moment so you can give the into to the hands more time.

3. RAYGUN: This one is awsome. I like the Ray Gun intro. I think you need to rearrange some timings. I think the time after the ray shots and the glow is like a pastel aqua green is too long…make it a few frames shorter and give more time to the burgundy circular explosions. I also think that that the when the logo gets hit and then the multi color glows happen…there should be change in shape not just shaking of the same shape.

HERE’S WHAT I LEARNED THIS WEEK:
AT&T has finally released a Customer Service App (FREE). Go download it. Unfortunately it doesn’t work in the dead spots (when you need them the most).

Teenagers From Outer Space is a black and white film about aliens who look like teenagers who land on an alternate Earth where everyone speaks in wooden voices out of sync with their mouths

The teenagers are travelling through space in a small metallic model held up by wires to scout suitable planets to rear small lobster puppets to send back for food on their home planet.

One of the teenagers vaporises a dog. He’s the mean teenager. His name is Thor.

Thor. He will destroy you!

Seeing the vaporised dog’s collar, Derek, the son of the leader, begins to think that Earth has sentient life that deserves to live. Once you see the characters in this movie you might be reversing that decision.

Derek defies the Captain of the ship, commanding him at laser gun-point to leave Earth because the gargons, as the puppets are known, will kill the inhabitants, or at the very least turn them into plastic skeletons.

Derek. Wholsome, alien, and teenager.

But Derek is overpowered and has to run away. Thor is left behind to pursue Derek while the others fly away. Derek’s father, the leader, gives the order that if Thor’s life is threatened Thor is to kill Derek. That’s fatherly love.

Derek befriends Betty and her loveable grandfather. They owned the previously vaporised dog, and coincidentally have an room to rent.

Derek breaks the news of poor Sparky’s demise. Betty is understandably pissed, but not as pissed as she’s about to be when the mean alien teenager, Thor, vaporises her friend.

Mmmmm, pool-side BBQ, extra crispy!

Derek and Betty go to see the local professor at the college, but Thor gets there first and vaporises him as well.

Oh noez.

They all end up at the city hall in a big shootout with the police, but Thor vaporises them as well and gets away, holding Betty and Derek captive.

Joe, a reporter investigating the suspicious multiple vaporisings, decides to go out to the old mine where Sparky was killed. Betty and Derek escape from Thor’s clutches. Derek now knows he has to stop them from returning with the lobster puppets to take over the world.

Thor returns to the old mine to wait for rescue but wrecks up his car and gets captured. Derek and Betty find his disintegration gun, but it doesn’t work when they are confronted with the enlarged gargon. They run away.

This is not a shadow. This is the monster.

Betty learns the truth about Derek, but by now she is in love with him anyway, and makes him promise to stay on Earth.

Mmmwwaaaa!

Oh wait, that’s not true, I’m sorry… She’s in lurve with him.

Derek discovers that he can make the disintegrator ray work by hooking it up to the power-lines. Then he saves the city and the world from the evil teenage invasion and their pet lobsters with the help of some stock footage.

Damn kids!

The early nineties– I was walking to the magazine shop where I bought my NME when I saw “revolution girl style now” grafittied on the five-story parking lot. In the shop, near Ray Gun, two older girls were singing “Goo likes to wear green underwear” to each other. I was intrigued.

So I learned to write in all lower case.

The leader of my Riot Grrrl chapter was called Sugar (hippie parent named, her sister was Spice.)

There was one black babydoll dress I could wear most places: with band t-shirts and ripped tights and converse. (yikes.) Or with Mary Janes and little glasses to brown nose with recently elected women congress ladies. Democrats seemed exciting. (Till the Clintons flubbed healthcare.)

Indie rock (did we call it that then? What did you call indie before “indie rock”?) taught me discrimination quick; 95% of the records we bought by mail order were crap.

Then I got into TLC.

I finally got around to animating the bumper animations for DC Classics, the DVD brand that rereleases classic DC Comic television shows.

Note: I focused mostly on getting the right/appropriate motions down, so they are not perfectly synced up with the sound just yet. Perhaps some noises will be changing in the final pass. They are also rendered at half the quality. They also run at 12 fps as you suggested.

Did you see that balloon the other day? I missed it because I only watch real news. Like Google Wave! Seacrest. Out.

This space phaser cap gun toy from the 1950’s is sweet!

I like a good challenge and my friend asked me to design a ray gun. Seeing that I have numerous rocket ships to work with, I developed a design with these ships in mind. I really was looking for a classic retro look ala Buck Rogers. I had to cut the circuits so the gun wouldn’t blast through the paper box enclosing it. It is basically a mash up between an old star wars gun and a wooden rocket ship. I literally had to pull parts of the gun apart and then seem it together with some duck tape and spit and polish. You didn’t think that I’d make a toy without a face on it did you? Shame Shame… The gun took me out of my comfort zone and I had to think outside the box to figure out structure, design, and workability. I’m pleased that I did what I had set out to do. And that was to create a recognizable, but original ray gun and have to stay true to it’s ancestral retro look.

I went to Toronto’s version of Comic Con last month.  It was free to get in, so I figured I might as well check it out.
It was small as expected, all held in one huge room, so it was basically a lot of comic book and toy vendors set up, and with a small Artist’s Alley kind of thing, where artists sold and/or commissioned artwork.

I decided to recycle my Commander Keen costume and pogo-sticked around the place a bit… I’ve gotten waaaay better at pogo sticking, by the way. 90 jumps in a row is my newest record!

Retro video game characters, at MY comic convention? It makes no sense, but it's more likely than you think!
