Clash of the Titans. Furia de Titanes. Rock n’ roll

Today’s Fiber artist is Ray Whiting from Knitivity.com. I hadn’t heard of Ray before Lis

Today’s Fiber artist is Ray Whiting from Knitivity.com. I hadn’t heard of Ray before Lisa suggested him for a feature, but I have since become very glad that she has. Not only is he a talented dyer who runs a great shop, but he also has had the life altering experience of living through hurricane Katrina.

He kept a journal throughout the event and it’s posted here. Warning, don’t start reading this unless you have some time on your hands. It’s not short but it is very compelling and poignant.

Knitivity itself has some very interesting features, for instance it has the only superwash lace weight yarn I’ve ever seen. (And now that I’ve seen, I seem to have developed a burning desire to own- such is the life of a yarn addict.) He dyes all of his yarns in really intriguing colorways; everything from Dirty Mechanic to Cats Paw Nebula. He also dyes to match artwork and photographs. You have to see the results – amazing!

Another feature that I haven’t seen before Knitivity is Dicey Knitting which is basically implementing special dice instead of a pattern. This sounds like it could be a lot of fun, but you have to be committed to it. I’m a control freak so it would take a lot of effort for me to just sit back and let the dice tell me what to do, but you know, I think I would enjoy the process.

Ray also supports local charity, and if you have a local charity you knit (or crochet) for and you are wondering if you could get a discount or bulk deal on some of your supplies, check back later on, because there are details during the interview.

Now to finish off the summary of this great guy and his lovely store, what kind of shopper would I be if I didn’t share some of the deals??

I really enjoy this stocking, it just looks like so much fun! Ray knit this stocking personally and is giving it away. To win the contest all you have to do is either buy 2 skeins of sock or lace *or* $50 worth of stuff.

The reason you only have to buy 2 skeins of sock or lace yarn, is that the 2 will no longer put you over the $50 mark because they’ve been discounted $3!

And… if you buy a skein or more of “Dura-lace yarn” (that’s the superwash laceweight I was talking about before) you can get the pattern for the Limberlost Trails Shawl free!

P.S Remember to check us out at 6pm when I have a Q&A with Ray himself!

Author: Lulia Pascanu
Source: articleage.com

What led them to this choice, as all four studios stated separately, is better performance for the price and copyright protection.
The other standard in competition, the Blu-ray disc, unconditionally backed, dvd, by Sony Pictures Entertainment, is also counting on support from Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Twentieth Century Fox (the latter, dvd, has recently joined the Blu-Ray Disc Association Board).
The Blu-ray disc has more world leading electronics companies that support it: Sony, LG Electronics, Matsushita (Panasonic), Mitsubishi, Samsung, Sharp, TDK, Philips, Pioneer, Hitachi. Also, computer giants Dell and Hewlett Packard.
The HD DVD standard is being, dvd, developed by Toshiba, Sanyo and NEC, under the endorsement of the DVD Forum.
Both HD DVD and Blu-ray standards use the same wavelength blue-lasers that permit data storage on the disc at a higher density. This enhances the disc capacity and allows the recording of high definition video, dvd, on DVD support.
Wining the support of the big Hollywood movie studios is most important in the DVD format battle. Up to this moment, the four studios that gave their endorsement to HD DVD technology represent 45% of the DVD pre-recorded movie market.
The launch of DVD players in the HD DVD format is being expected for the last quarter of 2005.

Games that are spawned from movies nearly always suck balls. With the exception of Goldeneye, Lego I

Games that are spawned from movies nearly always suck balls. With the exception of Goldeneye, Lego Indiana Jones / Batman / Star Wars, The Godfather, Hannah Montana Sing IT and The Seventh Seal : Magical Journey RPG. Ok, those last two don’t count. I made the Seal one up, could you tell? But no, they more often than not suck. And also reek of bad graphics, poor gameplay, woeful visuals and a general air of “let’s squeeze this cash cow until her udders explode, and I can pay to hide my several illegitmate children.”

Ghostbusters The Game was announced some time ago. I was excited from the get go, as I am a huge fan of the films, tv series and even the books that accompanied the TV series. But on the other hand, I was apprehensive. It had a lot to live up to. Those fears were alleviated when I found out that Harold Ramis and Dan Aykroyd were to pen the script for the game, and all the actors were to reprise their roles within the game.

The game plays out from the persepctive of a new recruit to the Ghostbusters family. (That’s you). You get thrown in to the deep end straight away. The first mission is at the Sedgewick Hotel, where you have to recapture that pesky, but strangely endearing “spud” of ectoplasm, Slimer. Using the proton pack for the first time with the Wiimote, and then throwing a trap onto the ground gave me a giddy thrill. And the subsequent opening with the signature theme tune only further cemented the sheer joy you feel when playing this game.

All the familiar characters are here. There’s even a few clever nods to both films. A picture of Gozer lies dormant in the museum level. The script and actors are top notch. Some choice lines being Venkman’s, “No, I’m not going after the little spud. I’ve seen this one before,. I know how it ends. You go for it, rookie.” My personal favourite is a toss up between Egon’s explanation of where he gets the time to work out all the new equipment for the Busters. “I have devised a nice routine, whereby I sleep for fourteen minutes a day. Naturally, this leaves me a lot of time to work on equipment.” And my second favourite is Winston, upon entering the Confederate Southern Texas wing of the museum. “Of all the rooms in the museum, this one was not top of my list.”

Gripewise, I only have two. The length of the game is not terribly huge. If you bashed away for six hours solid, you’d complete the game. And there is no online play available. Not a huge problem for me, but the option would have been nice.

Overall, I would highly recommend the game. On the Wii, mind. I’ve seen screenshots and videos of the X Box and PS versions. They look somewhat clinical and cold, the cartoon approach on the Wii reimburses that sense of fun that is associated with The Ghostbusters. I laughed, I zapped some ghosts, I was a ghostbuster for a week, and haven’t had this much fun playing a game since I discovered the chainsaw in Scarface : The World Is Yours.

This morning, on my way to work, at around 8.45am, I had a little accident.

I was early, (no, not running late for once!) & stationary. The lights changed, from red to green, but as with all morning rush hours, there was traffic galore, so needless to say i couldn’t move very far. I was barely hitting 10 miles an hr, & i must have slipped on something in the road (maybe oil, or rain). I felt my car slip. I slammed on the brakes, but smashed straight into the guy in front. Bummer! I knew i was going to hit him, so to try to minimise damage, i turned my steering wheel, & managed to hit his rear left end, thus damaging my drivers front side. Me, in my tiny Ford Ka, felt the brunt of the impact (obv!) & the other guy (Stuart) luckily was ok in his Audi A4 (read *Tank*). As this happened on a roundabout (literally just down the ring road from my home!) we drove on to the nearby lay-by, in which we both got out and inspected the damage. He got off lightly (a slight bumper scratch), & mine, however, is un-drivable I guess the main thing is that no-one is hurt.

I couldn’t stop shaking! I was fine, but thought ‘”fuck that’s my no-claims bonus gone!” (i’ve already had one accident, 2 yrs ago!) Anyway, i got out, & Stuart was ever so kind, he made sure i was ok, & we sat in my car (as the weather was crap) & exchanged details etc. We left on really good terms, & then we both drove away. I had to sit in traffic, behind him, for what seemed like forever, until the next roundabout whereby i could get off & go to my local garage for help. During my wait in traffic i called Mum. I didn’t tell her what had happened, but just left a message to get her to call me back. I appreciated she was in work, & there’s nothing she could do, but “turn your fucking phone on!” I then immediately rang my Love, Dave, he too didn’t pick up. So i rang the girlies @ work (i was due to start @ 9.30am!) & also left messages to say what had happened etc. I then got perhaps the most needed call i’ve had in a long time. Dave called & asked what was up…i explained etc. It was so good to hear his voice, he was so concerned, he calmed me down. Love.

Anyway, i got to my garage, & Ray (the owner, & a family friend) had a good look at it, removed some scary looking pieces of glass etc. He even had to use a crow-bar to pull the side-wing out from the engine! He told me to go through insurance-it’s going to cost too much otherwise. He said i could drive it home, but that’s it. I then called Dave & told him how i got on, & said i was on my way home. He said “which way?”, & as i said whereabouts i was, i saw him walking towards me! It was so good to see him! ^_^

He got in the car (still pissing it down!), kissed me (several times), & made sure i was safe! No one has ever done something like that for me. Dropped everything to see me, & make sure i was ok. X

We got home, he made me a v sweet cup of tea (he said i ‘was in shock’) & i relaxed (somewhat!). I love how much he cares for me! I spoke to Mum, told her everything, & she assumed i was driving too fast…i was to blame…blah, blah, blah…(defaults), informed the girlies some more, & then began the hunt for my insurance documents etc. I got it all sorted-i’ve lost my no claims bonus (i had 2 yrs!), i’ve lost my car (read *my life!*), some of my independence, & i have to wait until 2moro morning to receive a courtesy car. Other than that i’m ok! A little shaken up, but ok.

The El Camino varsity Colts football team faced off against the South City Warriors in the annual Bell Game November 14. The Colts stayed competitive until the second half where they let the game slip away, resulting in a 37-16 Warriors victory.

Early in the first quarter the Warriors took control of the game, gaining 40 yards from the opening kickoff. After a stuffed run on second down, Warrior wide receiver Damiano Calgaro caught a quick pass up field for 10 yards, getting stopped at the 15 yard line. On a play action pass, Warrior wide receiver Anthony Gomes scored the first touchdown of the game. A missed extra point capped off a five minute scoring drive, putting South City up 6-0.

(Photo Ray Concepcion)

The kickoff was received by Colt running back Dusan Semien took the kickoff to the South City’s 20 yard line. Quarterback Rob Roman passed to Kenny Anderson for a first down, but that was the only significant play El Camino could muster for the entire first quarter. The Colts managed to only gain five yards before punting to South City.

In the next drive South City gained a few yards before a turnover. On the first play, the Colts fumbled and it the ball was recovered by Warrior linebacker Kevin McGovern. On the final play of the first quarter, South City kicked a field goal taking a 9-0 lead.

In the second quarter, El Camino started on the receiving end and gained few yards. But on the fourth down, the Colts were forced to punt. Players on the South City team began displaying unsportsmanlike conduct after Warrior Courage Nwaopara was tackled at the 40 yard line. A number of shoves between players had dominated the quarter, as tempers were close to boiling over.

(Photo Ray Concepcion)

Once refocused, South City used an effective series of running plays and play action to drive downfield as Calgaro streaked up the sideline for 20 yards to the 15 yard line before getting tackled. In another play action pass Gomes scored a second touchdown on a pass from South City quarterback Eddie Sanchez, putting the Warriors up 16-0.

Neither team gained much yardage until Colts cornerback Jeff Fuentes took an interception 30 yards downfield to the 50 yard line. After a few failed passing attempts Roman attempted to run the ball but was stopped short of the line of scrimmage and fumbled on the last play of the first quarter, ending the first half with a score of 16-0.

The Colts opened the second half strong with a touchdown on their first drive from running back Nate Huey, putting the Colts on the board. Rather than kicking for the point after, the Colts successfully attempted the two point conversion, bringing the score to 8-16.

“After we scored that first touchdown, I think we got a little overanxious. We were more concerned with scoring again than gaining yards, which is way more important,” Huey said.

It showed as Warrior Matt Los returned the kickoff and got up to the 30 yard line. Los then ran a 15 yard streak up the sideline for 15 yards and scored a touchdown raising the score to 8-23 at the end of the third quarter.

(Photo Ray Concepcion)

In the fourth quarter, after a few questionable calls from the referees against the Colts, Sanchez hooked up with wide receiver McGovern on an 18 yard post route for another touchdown, putting South City up 30-8. Back on offense, Colts’ Roman hooked up with wide receiver Anderson on a 25 yard pass, bringing the score up to 14-30.

Still alive, the Colts went for the two point conversion with Semien running the ball to the end zone, cutting South City’s lead to 14. Any hopes of a comeback were crushed as Warriors scored another touchdown with only two minutes left in the game.

“I was so sure we were going to win in the beginning of the game,” back-up quarterback Francis Nagtalon said, “I know all of us seniors wanted to end high school with the Bell, which made the loss more heartbreaking than last year’s. We wanted the Bell but it really just didn’t turn out that way.”

The 2009 Bell Game ended with a loss for the Varsity Colts, with a final score of 16-37.

DISCLAIMER: I, temoosalami, am a huge Anaheim Ducks fan. (Like that wasn’t obvious from my name) So, if I seem a little too excited when Ryan Whitney creates a nice chance or when Corey Perry scores a goal or when Teemu Selanne is just on the ice, forgive me. I also shouldn’t be held responsible for anything I say.

The Penguins beat the Ducks 5-2 last night at the Mellon Arena. First time Ryan Whitney has been at the Mellon since he was traded. This will possibly be one of the worst recaps ever due to the fact that all four of us were at the game.

Nice things

> 5 goals for the Pens. Matt Cooke scored a minute and a half into the first and then netted the ENG to secure the win for the Pens, Billy Guerin had a PPG, Jordan Staal with his first SHG of his season, and Skoula with his first of the year.

> Todd Marchant also scored short-handed in the first. But no one cares.

> FACT: Teemu Selanne is too fast to take a picture of.

> Ryan Getzlaf vs. Jordan Staal in the face-off circle is entirely too terrifying. I felt like one of them was just going to let out a ferocious yell before killing the nearest small child.

> Billy Guerin and Getz squared off. My respect for Billy G can’t possibly get any higher. Getzlaf frightens me to no end.

> TheFifthStaal allowed me to clap two times when Teemu Selanne scored. I told them to remind me throughout the game that I am a Pens fan first and foremost.

> We didn’t lose a defensemen last night. *Knocking on wood*

> About those defensemen. Solid. Skoula, Engelland, Lovejoy and Guenin, I applaud you. And Shero, I applaud you.

> How nice is it to see this back out on the ice:

Not Nice Things

> To all attendees at the Mellon during an Anaheim game: Stop booing Ryan Whitney. He didn’t leave the Pens for a better, high paying salary. He has never said one bad thing about Pittsburgh. He hasn’t done anything to warrant your rude behavior. He was traded. Leave him alone. TheChitOfChat got in an argument with the person in front of them after he continuously booed Whit every time he saw him. I believe his words were “Yeah, well he probably likes it better in Anaheim.” Yeah, well maybe he does. They have warm weather and beaches and palm trees and I bet the fans at the Honda Center don’t boo him every time he touches the puck. If I would’ve been in their section, bad things would’ve happened. /rant.

> I’m really tired of hearing about Chris Bourque. I mean, I hate the guy. Every time he’s on the ice I cringe. But seriously, everyone stop. Way too much attention. If I have to see one more interview with him or his stupid father or one more FSN feature about his life, I might actually murder someone. But one last thing before all Bourque talk by me comes to an end, I was on his Wikipedia today and read this: “He has been blamed for WW1, WW2, the Holocaust, genocide in Darfur, the outbreak of the 2009 flu pandemic, the win/loss record of the Pittsburgh Pirates, the recording career of Radiohead, and the decline of the dollar’s value, along with being an accessory in the 9/11 attacks.” Hahahahaha. Okay, that’s it. /Bourque.

> People standing in the entrance/driveway of the Marriott, GET OUT OF THE WAY. Do not yell at me and criticize my driving when I’m slowly inching my way into the parking lot. Simply move out of the dang ENTRANCE. You’re so stupid.

This is such a poor excuse for a post. So many unintelligent things written. Might get better next one. Probably not.

EXCLUSIVE Hubby Ray on the agony and ecstasy of seeing her skate COLEEN SAYS DAILY Mirror BEST FOR WEEKEND TV

Even bluff Yorkshiremen are not immune to shedding the odd tear – just ask Coleen Nolan’s husband. He’s been welling up every week just watching her glide around on Dancing on Ice.

Ray Fensome has felt so proud of what Loose Women star and Mirror columnist Coleen has achieved on the hit ITV1 skating contest that it has been hard keeping his emotions in check.

“The cameras keep catching me with tears in my eyes,” confesses 50-year-old Ray. “But the feeling I get when I see Coleen take to the ice is incredible. I feel so proud of her.

“I am an emotional man and I cry, I am not ashamed to admit it. I have never been so proud in my life. It is overwhelming.”

The Leeds United supporter has been getting stick from friends and family for wearing his heart on his sleeve. But is he bothered? Not a bit of it.

“My mates were ribbing me for having tears in my eyes,” says Ray. “The kids take the mickey out of me for getting so emotional as well. Jake and Shane, my stepsons, rib me all the time. They say, ‘Oh Ray’s going to cry again’.

“But when they announce her name and she comes on the ice it just overwhelms me.

“I get a lot of stick but I have always been an emotional person – I cry at films. And since we’ve had Ciara I’ve become even more emotional.”

Ray has been yelling himself hoarse for his wife every Sunday night. And, along with their seven-year-old daughter Ciara, he can claim to be her most loyal fan. But the devoted hubby fears there is only one clear winner of the show. And it’s not his missus but his namesake – Ray Quinn.

“I want Coleen to win,” insists music promoter Ray. “But everyone’s saying Ray Quinn’s the best skater to ever be on this show at the moment. So I guess I’d feel bad for him if he didn’t win – but I want Coleen to take the trophy.

“I would love her to win, to improve that much that she could beat Ray would be amazing.

“That is going to take some doing but Coleen is going for it with everything she’s got.

“Ray is unbelievable. The professionals are looking at him and learning off him, he has got that much style.

“It would be a shame if this was a one-horse race from day one but with a public vote anything can happen. Look at last year with Chris Fountain. He had practically won it before it started but Suzanne Shaw pinched it off him at the final.”

Ray’s biggest fear is that Coleen might end up on the Dancing on Ice injury list – another celeb with bruised ribs, needing hospital treatment.

He remembers how scary it was when the family went skating in Blackpool a few years ago.

“It is so dangerous,” says Ray, a session guitarist who has toured the world. “I ripped all the ligaments in my arm when a kid cut across me and I went flying. My arm was out of operation for six months.

“Coleen was the same as everyone then – cling on to the side and try to get round, like Bambi on ice. So to see her come so far has been amazing.

“I have seen her fall – your heart is in your mouth when it happens. But I haven’t seen her take a really bad one yet.”

Ray is not worried about his wife getting cosy with her skating partner Stuart Widdall. He knows she only has eyes for, er, Olympic champion Christopher Dean.

“I have no worries with Stuart,” he laughs. “She’s in love with Christopher Dean, so I can’t do owt about that.

“If she runs off with him I can’t blame her. He is a legend.

“She said on last week’s show she had a crush on him… I have a bit of a crush on him myself!”

Ray is just loving the show although I have to admit he’s now turned into Jason Gardiner.

It’s so bad it’s like I’m actually living with Jason.

Advertisement – article continues below »

He tells me everything I do wrong.

He says things like “no you’re great, you’ve just got to bend those legs, get more speed and sometimes you look really scared”.

So I’m like, “Ray, I AM scared. I can’t bend my knees because my knees are knackered and I can’t get more speed because I might fall and I don’t want to.”

I had a crafty idea what to do to even things up a bit and stop all his criticisms. I decided to take Ray and our seven-year-old daughter Ciara skating today.

The last time Ray went was years ago and he could just about stay up on his feet.

So I said to him “OK Mr Know-It-All.

Now do a backward crossover.” He couldn’t even imagine it.

It’s great because he said “God, it’s only when you get on the ice you realise how difficult it is.”

The thing is, the pros and Ray make it look easy – Ray Quinn that is, not my Ray.

Anyway usually my Ray is pretty helpful around the house but he’s really helping now.

He cleans the house, looks after Ciara, even answers my fan-mail and brings me photos to sign.

I mean, obviously I come home and think “well you don’t quite do it like a woman but at least you try”.

Then when I get home he cooks me food and he’s great… apart from when he criticises me. Then I just want to kill him. But I’ve been amazed how emotional he’s been watching me dance – even shedding a few tears as he gets into it.

Maybe all the household chores have made him get in touch with his sensitive side.

And oh my God, have I made him cry. I think he gets frustrated with me because I am a different person to how I am on a Sunday.

The nerves just kill me in the lead-up to the show and Ray knows I’m not usually like that.

The thing is, I thought I’d be out in the first week. I’ve even had people tell me that women in their 40s don’t win these programmes. But here I am in week seven – thank the Lord for the public – but I still get so nervous.

My poor old legs are literally knocking together they’re shaking so much.

Also Ray’s not getting a lot of sleep which can’t help.

Apparently I’ve been screaming and crying in my sleep since Dancing on Ice started. I don’t know I am, but even the kids have said, “Mum will you stop screaming in your sleep?”

And even though he’s so sympathetic there are limits to what I can ask Ray to do to ease my many aches and pains.

He doesn’t give me any back massages or foot rubs though. I think that’d be too much. He’d probably divorce me if I asked him to!
