PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Officials have lifted all water restrictions and advisories for areas in Armstrong County.

Last week, officials with Pennsylvania American Water issued a “do not use” water warning due to elevated pH levels caused by malfunctioning equipment at a water treatment plant.

Affected areas included Kittanning and Applewold boroughs, as well as parts of Manor and Rayburn townships.

Just before the weekend, officials dropped the “do not use” advisory, but urged residents to boil all water before drinking it or cooking with it.

Officials say after collection samples taken Saturday and Sunday, they found acceptable bacteria test results.

More information can be obtained through Pennsylvania American Water’s customer service line at 1-800-565-7292.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Officials with Pennsylvania American Water say they have now lifted a “do not use” water warning in Armstrong County and issued a Precautionary Boil Water Advisory.

According to officials, the notice applies to Pennsylvania American Water customers in the Boroughs of Kittanning and Applewold and portions of Manor and Rayburn townships.

Before using the water for any purpose, the about 2,100 Kittanning customers under the advisory are advised to:

Drain and refill the hot water heater

Flush the hot and cold water systems for at least five minutes

Discard any items that were made with water after 5 a.m. on Nov. 16

Pennsylvania American Water officials say they “experienced a loss in positive water pressure on Friday… due to the shut down of the Kittanning Treatment Plant in response to elevated pH levels.”

Water tankers have been placed at the following locations and customers are asked to supply their own containers:

Kittanning Hose Company 6
1360 Orr Avenue

Armstrong County Health Center
265 South Mckean Street

Applewold Volunteer Fire Department
300 Ridge Avenue

According to Pennsylvania American Water, the treatment plant experienced an equipment malfunction, resulting in elevated pH levels in the drinking water.

Crews have now fixed the problem and are producing water within EPA and DEP limits.

Officials said bacteria testing generally takes 18 to 24 hours.

They are continuing to test and analyze water samples.

Officials also said they are hoping to lift the boil advisory in a few days.

KITTANNING (KDKA) — A man is facing serious charges after state police say they found an alleged explosive device in his Armstrong County motel room.

The incident happened Thursday at Staley’s Motel along Ortman Road in Rayburn Township.

State police say 34-year-old William Stover of Kittanning has been charged with weapons of mass destruction, possessing instruments of crime, prohibited offensive weapons, recklessly endangering another person and harassment in connection with the incident.

[worldnow id=7726675 width=385 height=255 type=video]

According to investigators, it all started when Stover’s girlfriend showed up at the state police barracks in Kittanning to report he had a homemade explosive device.

“There was a coffee can that had in it two explosive devices surrounded by metal objects – drill bits, shrapnel,” Armstrong County District Attorney Scott Andreassi said.

Authorities say she also reported the pair had gotten into an argument and that he also allegedly struck her on the head.

State police then responded to the motel, which was evacuated.

Stover was taken into custody when he came out of his room.

“I honestly don’t think he would have done anything bad even though they say he had all that in that house or that apartment,” Stover’s mother said. “He just needs a lot of help right now.”

State police say they then found the device, a coffee container reportedly filled with consumer fireworks and pieces of metal, inside the motel room. Authorities say it was “designed to be detonated by a fuse.”

[worldnow id=7727316 width=385 height=255 type=video]

Stover was arraigned and is being held in the Armstrong County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bond.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 19.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The “Porkway Pig” is not the only animal bringing traffic to a halt this week along a local roadway.

State police in Kittanning say a bull and a cow forced them to shut down the intersection of Routes 28 and 85 in Rayburn Township, Armstrong County Friday morning.

“Obviously not something you see every day!” says Cpl. Christopher Robbins.

Early Friday morning, a lovelorn red bull and a hefty heifer threw caution to the wind, giving in to a romantic impulse at the busy intersection.

[worldnow id=7355217 width=385 height=255 type=video]

“They’ll follow just about any heifer in heat,” Chad Anderson said. He once worked on a dairy farm.

The couple had grazed their way more than two miles from Alvin Rosenberger’s hilltop farm.

“Basically, they were having a lot of fun I guess,” observes Cpl. Robbins with a wry smile.

Arriving State Police on the midnight shift initially tried corralling the star-crossed bovines to the berm with crime scene tape.

Rubberneckers snapping photos with cell phones combined with a nearby road construction site added up to a rush hour traffic mess.

“I seen the trooper and he didn’t look like he was real great with cows,” Anderson said.

He and his buddy, Brandon Kravener, were on their way to their roofers jobs.

“Trying to get the cows calmed down get them off the road,” Anderson said.

They suggested that they get a room. Problem was, the 1,000-pound bull just wouldn’t quit.

“In this case, we really had to grab the bull by the horns,” adds Cpl. Robbins.

Using portable fencing and with help from the county EMA and the State Farm Bureau, the lovers were herded into the farmer’s trailer for the ride home and there they were, hoping they won’t be tagged with a moo-ving violation.

“Cows we can deal with – people – that’s a good way to get arrested,” Cpl. Robbins said.

We’ll have to wait another 283 days to see if Romeo and Juliet will be bringing a brand new addition to Armstrong County.

RAYBURN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A young boy died overnight after being pulled from a swimming pool u

RAYBURN TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A young boy died overnight after being pulled from a swimming pool unresponsive Saturday evening in Armstrong County.

According to the Allegheny County Medical Examiner’s Office, 8-year-old Trent Barrett of Kittanning was pronounced dead at Children’s Hospital at 12:10 a.m.

According to state police, Barrett and his younger sister had been swimming in the pool at Staley’s Motor Court Motel in Rayburn Township in the afternoon and were being supervised by an adult relative.

A young man at the pool said he saw the boy begin to go under the water. He said he called out to one of the boy’s relatives and then took action.

“I just looked over and saw him going down with bubbles coming out of his mouth, and I knew he wasn’t swimming. I knew it wasn’t common,” said Nathan Cousins, a witness. “So I went running over and that’s whenever his grandma jumped in and grabbed him.”

Cousins said the boy was unconscious when he was pulled from the pool after 6 p.m. Barrett taken to Armstrong County Memorial Hospital in critical condition and then was flown to Children’s Hospital.

[worldnow id=5923814 width=385 height=255 type=video]

Barrett’s family says he loved wrestling, cars and the outdoors.

They also say he was a daredevil who loved to climb, especially trees. So, they planted a tree in his honor on Sunday with a plaque that says “Those we have held in our arms for a little while, we hold in our hearts forever.”

“I thought this was a perfect way to memorialize him. We’ll love this tree just as much as we loved him,” said Jessie Claypoole, Barrett’s uncle. “He was my little nephew, but I treated him like I would my own son.”

What exactly happened at the pool is unknown. The family that runs the motel says they stress safety.

“They tell them that it’s the parents’ responsibility to watch the children. We usually have someone out here, but there wasn’t anybody out here, unfortunately,” said Cassidy Hicks, whose family owns the motel. “We tell them to put floaties on them and we tell them not to let them in the deep end by themselves.”

Witnesses say Barrett did have floaties on at one point. His grandfather says the boy dropped his goggles and may have taken the floaties off to dive and get them.

His grandmother performed CPR, but Barrett died at the hospital where doctors told them he had a lump on his head, which he may have hit jumping off the diving board, or they thought he may have been fatigued or had a reaction to pool chemicals.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner will do an autopsy Monday.

State police in Kittanning and the Armstrong County District Attorney’s Office are looking into the incident, though at the moment they say it appears to be just an accident.
