Well, on the heels of my review about the Razer Naga™ MMO Gaming mouse, I found a new function for it, work. Because of the new UI customizability of Alphacam 2010 R1, I found that I can fully justify the cost of this mouse as a work expense.

Since you can assign ‘custom’ shortcuts to pretty much any command in Alphacam now, you can use a mouse like the Naga™ to help to lessen your work load.

I use the Razer Naga™ in this example, but that does not mean that you can’t use any other gaming mouse with the same functionality

Here’s an example of what I am talking about. In Alphacam you spend a lot of time drawing ‘geometries’ that you can then, later, add ‘tool paths’ to which will allow you to create g-code for your CNC Machine. You end up using the following commands in Alphacam many, many, many times:

1) Geometry | Line
2) Geometry | Rectangle
3) Geometry | Circle
etc.

Because you have to click on the Geometry menu each time, this is an, annoyingly, large amount of mouse moves. Well, since MMO mice have an extrodinary amount of buttons on them that, either, match a keyboard key, or can be configured to be mapped to specific commands. The Naga™ has all of it’s buttons mapped to either the number keys, or the number pad, which makes it perfect for use with Alphacam.

What I did was this, I set the Naga’s™ slider (found at the bottom of the mouse) to ‘num’ as shown below:

This allows me to let the computer know that I want the mouse ’s side buttons to be mapped to the ‘number pad’ that, usually, sits on the far right of the keyboard. I recommend this because if you leave it at ‘123′ each time you try to enter a value in the ‘numeric entry’ boxes, you may activate a new command…not fun.

Next, you can begin to map the mouse buttons to the commands in Alphacam:

1) Open Alphacam

2) Right click on the menu bar

3) Click on the Customize… command

4) Now select the ‘Keyboard’ command

5) Select the command you want to assign, in this example, I used the Geometry | Line command. To select this one, just change the category to ‘CAD Geometry’ and select the ‘Line’ command in the Commands list:

6) Click your mouse in the ‘Press new shortcut key:’ box and press the key combination that you want to use to activate this command and click on the button to assign it. I used Num 1 (which is the ‘1′ key on my Naga™):

Now repeat I just repeated the steps for each command that I wanted to link. If you want to link more than one command to a key, always remember that you can use ‘modifier’ keys to accomplish this. I recommend using only the following modifiers:

Ctrl
Ctrl + Alt
Ctrl + Shift
Ctrl + Shift + Alt
Shift
Shift + Alt
Alt

If you use the above modifier keys, you can map a total of 84 commands to your mouse. You can also leave the old shortcuts there, or you can highlight the shortcut and click the button to remove it (it’s also handy if you click the wrong combination for a command, ).

Now, I want to mention, that although I am using a Razer Naga™, that doesn’t mean you have to as well. You can still create all kinds of shortcuts and then program those mice, that use configurable buttons, to work similarly to how we set this up. And now, I get to write off this gaming mouse purchase as a work expense…don’t look at me like that, you were thinking it too.

Gamers, is there anything they won’t buy?

The answer is of course “no”, they will buy pretty much anything. The prevailing strategy is: if you build it with blue LED’s, they will come.

My previous keyboard was a Saitek Eclipse. I chose it because of the solid reputation of Saitek and at the time I was playing alot in low light as I was sharing my bedroom and the lights were out early. It had great typing feedback, looked good and was solid. I did eventually break the spacebar after a few years and prompted the need for a replacement.

Without doing any research or testing I decided my last gaming keyboard was great so the next one will be even greater. I lobbed into my nearest electronics store and saw the Razer Lycosa sitting on the shelf. I knew Razer had a solid reputation for gaming mice, I liked the layout and it had extra ports for a headset and USB. Win-win-win.

The unboxing and initial thoughts:
Brought it home, plugged it in and became acclimatised. It looks terrific out of the box and plugged in. The glowing blue characters contrast great against the mat black keys and the glossy black surrounds make it the focal point of the room.
The keys are laid out somehwat like a laptop keyboard. The keys themselves are big enough to hit but they are very flat, only a few milimetres thick and very tightly packed. They give good typing feedback with a satisfying click and feel sturdy. There is no mushyness or any chance of a stuck key.

The keyboard comes with driver software including the ability to assign a macro to any key on the keyboard. I have never heard a convincing argument for using macros in games and never made use of the functionality. However the interface is easy to use and make switching through profiles simple and non intrusive.

The insulated cable combines the USB power for the keyboard itself in addition to the extra USB and microphone/stereo lines which enable the keyboard to act like a hub for devices which use these lines. As someone who likes to hide his case out of the way, this keyboard offers access to functionality I’d normally have to get on the floor with a flashlight to plug or unplug from the back of the case. Nice and convenient.

Coping with the daily grind:

The aforementioned convenient ports do have their caveats, unfortunately. The USB is only version 1.1, meaning it is slow as molasses. The slots greatest asset is being at-your-fingertip accessible, great for mp3 players and thumb drives, both of which will suffer from the slow speed profile. Sadly this makes them unused, being I can use the ones on the case at a slight inconvenience or if I’m desperate run a USB extension myself.

I had some problems with the microphone/stereo jacks as well. The headset I was using at the time simply didn’t work in the keyboard. I received mono in the headphones and the microphone picked up no sound. The same headset worked perfectly in the back of the case. I could plug in other speakers and microphones, but not the ones I regularly used. Sadface.

Finally, the keyboard is a bitch to type on. The keys are so flat and so close together, its very easy for your fingers to wander into the wrong column and it still happens often to me even after using the keyboard for such a long time. A gaming keyboard still has to be a keyboard first, then have other gaming conveniences. While the keys give nice feedback, its absolute hell to type on.

Aesthetically its not standing the test of time either, the paint on the oft used WASD keys are wearing thin, becoming see through, its all black keys shows dirt obviously and the glossy paint surrounds wear fingerprints loudly and proudly. The media buttons, which are touch sensitive, offer zero feedback to when they are being pressed, making it impossible to know if you actually hit the track change button or volume without hearing the result. They also show up fingerprints and dirt like the rest of the keyboard.

Conclusion:

A keyboard with good ideas not incredibly well executed.

2/5

Hello, after a recent trip to best buy, I decided to purchase a new mouse (considering I had broken my last one). I was browsing the isles when I found the Razer Naga MMO mouse. I, normally, don’t like to review a product after only a few days of use, but this product is so fantastic, I have fallen in love with it right away.

So, let’s get on with it:

Product Name: Razer Naga™ MMOG Laser Gaming Mouse
Website: http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-naga/

Technical Specifications:

Upto 5600 DPI Razer Precision Laser (software configurable)

Upto 1000Hz Ultrapolling (software configurable)

200 inches/second tracking speed

Zero-acoustic Ultraslick™ teflon feet

17 buttons (hardware configurable)

The technical specs for this mouse were pulled off of the Razer website. I have owned this mouse for only about 3 days (as of the date of this posting) and am really loving this thing.

Pros

Ergonomic fit – this mouse is contoured for ‘righties’ such as myself. Holding it is a pleasure as it fits to the natural curve of the palm and rotation of the wrist.

Finish - the resting area of this mouse has a great non-slip material making it easier to keep it in the place where it needs to be…my palm. The rest of the mouse has a mirror finish on it that makes it look just as good as it feels

Buttons - dear god! There are enough buttons to make anyone happy. The best part is that they are not actually ‘hotkey’ buttons. The 12 buttons on the side are assigned to either the numbers along the top of the keyboard, or the number pad. Since I use this mouse for gaming as well as work, this is perfect. No need to actually muck around with some custom UI to assign buttons for each program I work with.

Lights - this thing is lit up like Tokyo…and they are all blue, my favorite color

User Interface – the UI designed by Razer to allow you to customize certain features of this mouse is not only aesthetically appealing, but helps to make this mouse easier to use (who really NEEDS 5600 DPI settings?).

Cons

Buttons - the fixed ‘Back’ and ‘Forward’ buttons are not in a spot that makes it easy, or comfortable to use. They take a little getting used to, but once you do, you start to not mind it so much

Heat - this puppy generates a bit of heat due to the lights on it. Because of this, you can get sweaty palms pretty quickly (this can be mitigated by turning the lights off in the software UI.

Lack of customization – while it is nice that the buttons only work either the numbers along the keyboard or the number pad, it would be nice to have the option to change what these keys do

Right-Handed operation – since I am right handed, this isn’t too much of a big deal, but for the cost of it, it’s unfortunate that my daughter, who is left handed, can’t use this mouse to it’s fullest extent

Download drivers only – while I understand that this is an MMO gaming mouse, and to play MMO’s you need to have internet connection, I am an old-school player who likes to have the disc’s in hand. When I started playing Everquest 2, I went and bought the discs, just to have them. I don’t like to have to create my own install disc for drivers, especially when I paid so much for the product.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great product that, while costly, is well worth the cost. Because of what it can do, I feel far more effective in work and play. Moving from a trackball-style mouse to this style was a big move for me (used the trackball style for about 5 years now) but I have to say that it’s been worth it.

If this mouse even lasts half as long as my last one, I will see this as a good investment. I am telling anyone that reads this that I think you will be happy with this mouse.

You may have noticed that I didn’t add the cost into either the pro’s or con’s section. I would like to say that the cost is a pro because of what you are getting, and a con because it’s just so expensive, but it’s really neither. I have to say that for the price, you are getting exactly what you are paying for, nothing more, nothing less.

After slightly >2 years, the rubber coated buttons of my Razer Diamondback non-3G Plasma Blue LE desktop mouse finally degraded beyond repair. Multiple attempts to “rescue”/clean/disinfect the surfaces did not make it better, but in fact, made the rubber more “sticky”. I suspect it’s the isophyrol alcohol that is reacting adversely with the rubber material. So in other ways, the acids from the oil secreted from my fingers accelerated the wearing-out of the rubber-coated buttons & turned the rubber scroll wheel yellow; & the chemicals from the wet tissues nailed the stake in its heart. Nonetheless, the mouse has served me pretty well (& comfortably) over two years but alas, it’s time for a replacement.

The Razer Orochi is the first mouse of it’s kind. Yes, gaming mice have been done before, along with bluetooth mice but the two have never come together on a drastic scale. The general population knows that wired mice are the standard for gaming but Razer allows you to have a wireless experience while having the ability to ‘pwn noobs’ as much as you’d like to.

Design

Being a notebook mouse, it is not big at all. Intended for travel, the mouse is only 3.89 inches long, 2.67 inches wide, and 1.37 inches tall. (MM units above). If you have large hands and are not used to gaming with a small, notebook sized mouse, I would personally go with the Razer Mamba if you want that wired – wireless capability without the idea of transporting it regularly.

All-in-all, the Razer Orochi is very ergonomic in it’s design. it fits well in my hand even if it is tiny. My hand is naturally tiny so that is always a plus. My sister compared this mouse to the bat mobile, actually. It has a very sleek, sophisticated design with a lot of power behind it. The top of the mouse is one solid piece of plastic that magnetically fits onto of the mouse, covering up the battery compartment. There is a gap in-between the two mouse buttons, above the scroll wheel. The purpose of this is for the plug to fit in neatly, allowing wired mode for the Orochi.

Each side of the Orochi has two, very tiny buttons, giving the mouse a total of 7 customizable buttons. The buttons are quite tiny and I wasn’t expecting that. I accidentally hit the two buttons at the same time with my thumb from time to time but I’m getting used to it. I have had this mouse a total of two weeks so far (its felt longer), and I have no true complaints about it. By now, I’m getting used to hitting the tiny buttons and getting used to their placement on the mouse. In fact, this is the only mouse I have seen that as two buttons on each side of the mouse, allowing both ‘lefties’ and ‘righties’ to use this mouse comfortably – and then we get two extra buttons to use with our pinkies. (Just don’t set it to a button you will use a lot. I have it set to raise and lower DPI.)

Unlike the majority of notebook mice, the Razer Orochi does not have the battery compartment on the bottom. It also doesn’t require a slot to store your USB dongle (since it’s bluetooth) so there isn’t a spot for that either. This allots the bottom of the mouse for one thing and one thing only. The 3G sensor that makes the Razer Orochi so great. The sensor is larger than most notebook mice but it doesn’t cause the mouse to be greater in size. Only other parts that are on the bottom of the mouse are the on-off switch and the 4 Teflon feet. The switch on the bottom is much more convenient than other mice I have come across. The button to turn off your mouse is usually small, awkward to press, or hidden in the battery compartment. This is not the case. The on-off switch is right below the sensor and you can simply flip the mouse of your hand and slide your finger over the switch, pushing it to the right side, turning off the mouse. No longer will we have to try and press a button the size of a spec. I also would not be surprised if Razer released a kit that allows you to replace the feet on your Orochi, seeing how they have done so for two other mice they have on the market.

Lastly, the wired-mode cable is a no-tangle cable. It is braided in order to prevent knots and tangles. One end is a generic USB 2.0 plug while the other side is a customized plug that fits into the front of your Razer Orochi. It almost resembles a mini-USB but, to be honest, I am unsure of what sort of plug it is exactly.

Usage

Being a small mouse, it does take some getting used to if you are not accustomed to used a claw-like grip when using your mouse. Once getting used to it, the Orochi feels as if it slips into your hand perfectly. It feels as if the two top mouse muttons were depressed slightly in order to comfortably hold your two fingers. The scroll wheel also makes a faint click, quieter than what I was used to, when you scroll it. My Razer Orochi replaced my old Logitech LX7 mouse and I was far from used to a high DPI mouse. Last I checked, the LX7 had a maximum DPI of 1200 while the DPI of the bluetooth mode Orochi is 2000 and you can defiantly notice the difference. 90% of the time I am using the mouse in bluetooth mode because I am not a fan of wires or dongles. The DPI isn’t close to what it could be but it almost seems as if 4000 DPI is too much if you do not get used to it.

The one complaint I have about the DPI of this mouse is that, from now on, I am unable to use the mice on my school’s computers! They move so slowly compared to my mouse and it’s almost painful to try and use one!

Keep in mind, Bluetooth mice do ‘sleep’ after being left to rest for a couple of minutes so they need a minute to wake up. So.. don’t go AFK in MW2 and expect to immediately shoot someone trying to kill you if you aren’t plugged in. You’ll die.

Battery Life & Carrying Case.

Razer advertises a 1-3 month battery life based on usage. I have yet to have to change my batteries seeing how I have only had this mouse for two weeks. I will update this section of the review when I need to change my batteries, telling you how long they lasted

The Orochi does not consume battery power when it is plugged in so if you want the battery to last a very long time, plugging it in is your best option. It is also nice to keep the cord with you incase your batteries die, you can still use your mouse. Razer makes this easy because the Orochi comes with a carrying case that appears to be made of neoprene. The case has a moveable divider that allows the mouse to take up one side while the other side can be used to hold the wire and any spare batteries you would wish to bring with you.

Customization.

Every button on the Orochi can be customized to your liking, whether it be with the options it gives you or a macro you created. I tried making a macro where the two right hand side buttons would turn my volume up and down but I was unable to get the macro to work well. I am not efficient in macros so I am sure someone who has experience with them would get more use out of them than I do.

One issue with the Orochi’s customization is that it can only be customized when plugged in. If you try and open the program if the mouse is not plugged in, it will immediately close. I wish that could be changed but there isn’t much I can do about it.

Summary

The Razer Orochi is a spectacular mouse. It performs well and is fully customizable. Customization, however, is limited to wired mode only and the max DPI (4000) is only available during wired mode as well. If none of this bothers you and you have the money available, the Razer Orochi is the mouse for you. It meets all the standards of mobility, performance, and design. The only true con is that the Orochi does cost an arm and a leg. ($79.99 at most retailers.)

I think this was the first year where I have actually surprised my gamer with a gift that he was genuinely excited about once he opened it. I’m not saying that he isn’t thankful for other presents I’ve given him, but as I’ve said before it’s not easy to buy a present for him, and it is certainly not easy to surprise him. This year my gift rocked; I bought him the Razer Mamba, a wireless gaming mouse.

Item Name: Razer Mamba

Item price: $129.99 [£99.99]

What it does: It’s a wireless computer mouse designed especially “for gamers by gamers” (that’s the Razer tagline.) The Razer Mamba has a very cool looking design and a glowing blue light, but more importantly it’s ergonomically friendly with a long battery life, so the gamer can play for hours. I’ve heard lots of the technical stuff behind the design, but I’m not that computer savvy so if you care about the 5600 dpi laser sensor, or the 1 millisecond polling rate and other techie info check out the website here.

The gist behind it is that most of us normal point-and-click mouse users don’t need a very specific dpi sensor because we’re clicking on very large icons compared to gamers. We also don’t need the response between clicks to be that fast because we aren’t constantly clicking. But if you’re virtually aiming a gun at an enemy’s throat you want to be as accurate and as fast as possible so you can kick some serious video game ass. That’s why the 5600 dpi laser sensor and 1ms polling rate features are so important for gamers

Where to buy it: I got mine from Best Buy, but I would assume any place you can buy computer & video game equipment. You can also buy directly from razerzone.com.

Who to buy this for: Your serious PC gamer, or your gamer who has to have the latest and the greatest of everything.

Review: For PC gamers this mouse is absolutely awesome. It’s expensive, but apparently totally worth it and arguably the best mouse ever. My boyfriend was so excited about this mouse when the trailer first came out. (Yes, that’s right this mouse has a trailer just like a blockbuster movie.) He would talk about the design as if it was an Aston Martin DB9.

If you plan to buy this in the shops be aware that it comes in an elaborate clear display case. I made a bit of an ass out of myself after trying to explain to the guy at the store that there were no more Mamba’s in the mouse section while he was showing me the Mamba in a plastic display case between two computers. I didn’t realize that what he was showing me wasn’t a special display, but the actual packaging, and that he was trying to give it to me. This mouse is that cool.

(Razer Megasoma).

Razer – Razer Sphex.

▼ Speed side

▼ Control side

Last year I got a Razer Pro|Type keyboard and mouse for my iMac. The keyboard is based off of the Ta

Last year I got a Razer Pro|Type keyboard and mouse for my iMac. The keyboard is based off of the Tarantula they offer of Windows machines, and the mouse off of the Copperhead.

The keyboard is very responsive, has iTunes controls on the side, and oddly enough, an apple universal dock in the top middle. It plugs into the computer with 2 USB cables, one for the keyboard and one for the dock. It isn’t so much gaming oriented as it is media, there are zoom and rotate buttons to one side that you can set to work with a specific image editor. It does not however have Control, Option, and Command labeled properly, they are Control, Start, and Alt, Control being Control, Start being Option, and Alt being Command, which is pretty confusing to get the hang of. You can change these defaults by going to System Preferences>Keyboard>Modifier Keys, I’ve done this to make it more user friendly, but the fact that option and command aren’t printed on the keyboard still messes with me sometimes.

It features another set of keys down each side of the keyboard that are completely programmable, you can make a stream of keystrokes, add delays in intervals of 1/20 of a second/ There are ten of these keys and the keyboard features a profile button that toggles between ten different profiles for these keys, so you can essentially program 100 different commands into the keyboard, which would be most effective across different programs. I used this feature when I played WoW, I put the commands of my spell rotation in it with delays and all, and would effectively hit a key every ten seconds while I was mindlessly grinding, allowing me to multitask/be extremely lazy.

There are 2 USB 1.1 ports on the back side of the keyboard, accompanied by a 3.5mm line out port. I was always confused by this port, seeing as It didn’t play the audio from my computer. I tried going into sound under system preference and using Razer’s own software for the keyboard. Well today I finally figure out what it’s there for, and I’m somewhat confused as to why they would do this.

It relays the audio from an iPod plugged into the dock. It doesn’t work with my phone, but with my classic it works. It works whether the computer is on or not. I can halfway see a reason for this, but I can quickly strike it down with simple logic. If you have the computer on and your iPod plugged into it, why wouldn’t you just listen to your music through iTunes? If your computer is off why would you need to keep your iPod plugged into the keyboard? just plug the iPod into whatever output you would plug into the keyboard. Not only that, it adds white noise, not just a little, but constant crackling and hissing. The line out would have served a much better purpose if I was able to plug my headphones into it and listen to my computer that way, so I wouldn’t have to turn my computer or fumble around aimlessly to find the line out port.

I really do like this keyboard, the keys are quiet and don’t need to be pressed very far, I’m just a little put off by the line out now that I actually know its function, I’d almost prefer having a defective keyboard knowing it was at least designed with a bit more common sense.

Heres a link so a much more in depth review that I think describes it better than I can, plus it has pictures of all the features I’ve mentioned: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Razer/Pro_Type/1.html

Razer Megalodon!

Razer FTW!
