Slipway Fires is the third album by English rock band Razorlight. The album was released on November 3, 2008. It received generally negative reviews – Drowned In Sound described it as “a headachey throb of over-production and excessive sentiment” and “about as indie as Margaret Thatcher”, while the NME described them as “just a boringly competent indie band masquerading as, at best, Fleetwood Mac and, at worst, Whitesnake”. Q were favourable however, commenting that “Slipway Fires requires more of your time and duly rewards it”.

Razorlight: Burberry Blue Eyes
Men ibland hittar man guldkorn.

Christian Kjellvander: Poppies and Peonies
(Ps. Det betyder “vallmor och pioner”!)

Radiohead: High and Dry

Pink: Dear Mr. President
The Killers: Human
Älskar när publiken jublar åt “what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay”.

Brainpool: We Aim to Please

I’m such a fake.

Tori Amos: Talula
Från hennes “barockplatta”, Boys for Pele.

Meat Loaf: Bat out of Hell
Jag älskar episka låtar! (Episk i ordets ursprungliga bemärkelse. Inte den nya internetkidzdefinitionen.)

Sahara Hotnights: Visit to Vienna

I really don’t know. I was at a pub quiz in the Prince of Wales in Clapham, south-west London

I really don’t know. I was at a pub quiz in the Prince of Wales in Clapham, south-west London the other night, had had a few too many pints of Guinness and vaguely recollect one of my drinking partners saying that along with all of the above he’d been invited to a dinner party at the home of the former wife of Don Powell, drummer with seventies glam-rock band Slade, somewhere in Highgate, north London.

I guess you had to be there to appreciate the conversation, but this, coupled with some time ago going on the Old Highgate Village Walk that takes place every Sunday afternoon, does give me the chance to continue with my Things You Don’t Need To Know About London.

Don Powell, former drummer with Slade, on the right.

With its narrow lanes lined with cottages and Georgian town houses and spectacular views over London, you might guess by its name that Highgate is one of the highest points in London, weighing in at a lofty 131 metres. Highgate Hill, linking Archway and Highgate village, was the route of Europe’s first cable car, operating between 1884 and 1909.

A rather tenuous claim-to-fame, at the age of 20 Charles Dickens once stayed in a house in North Hill, the highest part of Highgate. Almost opposite Dickens’ former home we have Highpoint I and II – two 1930s apartment blocks described as one of the best examples of early International Style architecture in London. Architectural historian Dan Cruickshank selected Highpoint on his shortlist of Britain’s Best Buildings.

Highpoint I.

The pub tradition of Swearing on the Horns, the pledging by oath one’s dedication to merriment and debauchery, originated in Highgate. Commonly seen as a way of local publicans alleviating gullible travellers of their money, I won’t bore you with detail except to say it involves kicking a pig out of a ditch, kissing the prettiest woman in the pub and saluting a set of horns.

Swearing on the Horns is still practiced to this day at The Wrestlers and Flask pubs, though due to health and safety the traditional horns of a live bull have been replaced by a set of horns from an animal of the dead variety.

Highgate School, previously known as the Sir Roger Cholmeley’s School at Highgate, is home to the oldest freemasons lodge in the world. Established in 1565, after 400 years the public boy’s school has eventually opened its gates to the opposite sex.

Former ‘Old Cholmeleians’ include former Home Secretary Charles Clarke, various members of the band Razorlight, cricketer Phil Tuffnell, various classical music composers, Murray Walker, Barry Norman, Geoffrey Palmer, Sir Clive C5 Sinclair, artists, playwrights, actors, MPs, Judges…

Highgate School.

On to North Road, a wide road formerly used to drive cattle into the city of London, and the guided tour takes us to the former home of both Poet Laureate John Betjeman and poet non-laureate, philosopher and opium addict Samuel Taylor Coleridge.

Coleridge lived in Highgate until his passing to the great opium den in the clouds. His grandson an Old Chomeleian, he was buried in Highgate School chapel; however, after a row with the council his remains were dug up and reburied just down the road in the crypt of St. Michael’s Church.

St. Michael's Church.

Past the home of comedienne Victoria Wood and the tour arrives at The Grove, one of the most expensive streets in London; home to George Michael, Annie Lennox and Sting.

Across the road and we find the former home of super-sleuth Margaret Rutherford, now home to ex-Python Terry Gilliam.

“Against cold meats was he insured?
For frozen chickens he procured -
brought on the illness he endured,
and never was this Bacon cured”.

(Pip Wilson)

Final stop on the guided walk – the pond-less Pond Square – one of the most sought-after parts of Highgate village. It’s here the guide leaves us with a story of a frozen stuffed chicken that led to the death of Sir Francis Bacon and the haunting of the Ghost Chicken of Pond Square. I won’t bore you with the details.

Well, Oasis is no longer. I think we all know that. So that’s done. It’s a shame, but that’s life. We had a good run at it. The thing about Oasis is no-one, we ended Oasis. No-one ended it for us. Which was pretty, kind of cool. I’m thinking of what the next step is musically, which is all my mind’s on.

Orange is making its mark in British youth culture (Image by graham)

I have been told that best brand-sponsored cultural events are those which do not have logos brandished on leaflets, walls, ceilings and floors, staff badges, USB sticks and toilet doors. And that the more subtle a partnership and the less intrusive a brand on an event, the better. Orange RockCorps destroys that mistaken belief.

Orange RockCorps gets thousands of volunteers across the UK each year to volunteer for 4 hours. For two summers I cleaned pathways and cut down weeds, bushes and trees in Valentine’s Park, Ilford. Joined by a bunch of enthusiastic volunteers, we got out of bed early on a Saturday morning to make the park pretty. And the reward for our hard work? Tickets to an exclusive gig at the Royal Albert Hall with international superstars NaS, Nelly, Kelly Rowland, John Legend, Ludacris, Busta Rhymes and artists of British origin such as KANO, Lethal Bizzle, Razorlight all playing under one roof!

Last year Busta Rhymes headed the concert and his performance was unforgettable: the fast-paced rap flows, the passion, the adrenaline – everything came together to make it feel like an earthquake had just struck Albert Hall (in a good way).

Drinks and food at the ‘09 volunteering days were provided by Suso (Suso also promote their products through in-kind sponsorships of local schools and Street Fest ’09) and Golden Wonder. Sony Ericsson were also involved in the project with their photography competition which runs alongside the volunteer work. Participants take photographs and the best, most creative image won a bag-full of goodies. Sony provided the new phones for the budding-photographers thus exposing their product to the target market and crucially getting people to see, hold and use their phones.

This is a cool, fun and intelligent campaign put on by Orange. The volunteering was actually enjoyable, the gig was incredible and the fact that Orange encourage people to continue volunteering after the show demonstrates their commitment to making the world a better place. Their creativity and imagination made the “logo-ful” project seamless, totally unobtrusive (I for one was not put off by the product-placement and 10-foot branded signs) and forgivable (for the sceptics and cynics out there). That’s why Orange is one of my favourite brands making commerce and culture work together.

Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has advised Razorlight’s Johnny Borrell to “get a new haircut” to turn around the band’s fortunes.

Speaking at the Teenage Cancer Trust show last week ahead of both bands’ co-headline appearance at the Isle Of Wight Festival, Jones likened Razorlight’s position to that of his own band.

He told MTV: “If there’s any band members left by that point… he reminds me of where we were with our third album… in fucking trouble!”

Razorlight recently lost drummer Andy Burrows following disappointing sales of 2008 album ‘Slipway Fires’.

However, Jones had advice for Borrell in riding out the storm. “Just change your haircut, they’ll forget all about you then. It’s a new you – Madonna’s done it all her life.”

También reciben ostias las estrellas poperas excesivas y ridículas: Mika (Grace Kelly), Geri Halliwell (It’s Raining Men), Mariah Carey (con Westlife en Against All Odds), Victoria Beckham (Out of your mind)…

Say hello to my completed Social Studies project; Also known as “Charlie” and “The Quaker”!

Charlie And The Quaker

You like my puppetry skills there? My school, you see, is not like most. Instead of lectures and notes we make puppets and fake commercials, or at least with this teacher. Let me explain a little bit.

You probably know Charlie by his more common name; King Charles II. But I, personally, prefer Charlie over that. If you take off Charlie’s little tin foil crown you see on his head, then he has an alter-ego; The Duke of York. By his side, you’ll see a man with strange, frizzy, fur-like hair. That is “The Quaker”. Unlike Charlie, he is not worthy of naming, so that is his name. And, also unlike Charlie, he does not wear a soft velvet dress-like-thing, but a brown, scratchy dress-like-thing. Tomorrow, Charlie and the Quaker have a special appearance in my 1st/2nd period Social Studies class. Along with William Penn, Pennsylvanian Dutch man, and Random Colonial Guy–Who is almost always abbreviated as RC”–he has the unlucky chance to teach my classmates about the early history of New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and New Jersey. Fun.

Not my greatest artistic achievement yet, exactly, but they’re alright, I guess. My mom and sister helped me with pretty much everything of it, though, so it’s not really my artistic achievement at all. They’re too big, way too big. The other puppets made by my teammate will be a fraction of the size. So everyone will laugh(at me, presumably) and I’ll hate it and hate myself and everything. I don’t understand why everyone likes these things; They’re just…I dunno, painful? For me, at least. I’ll try to make this un-embarassing little evening go on for as long as possible, as to avoid this. Grrrr.

- Naomi

PS; I don’t get it. Why didn’t the most recent Razorlight album get waaaaay better reviews? It was a little tiresome at first, but I’ve been listening to it a bit today, and I love it! It’s wonderful. It has a really old-fashioned, almost swingy, sort of feel to it. It’s raining really hard outside, and it was a perfect match for Wire To Wire, which gets better with everyone listen…

2009 marks the 50th anniversary of the most legendary British amp ever made: the Vox AC-30. Used by everyone from 60’s bands such as The Beatles and Rolling Stones, to acts such as Queen, U2 and new bands such as Oasis, Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian, no other amp has put its mark on British rock music as the Vox AC-30 has.

Vox AC-30: the classic sound of British rock!

The Vox AC30 was created in 1958 as “big brother” for the fifteen watt AC15 model, Vox’s original flagship amplifier. An article from the current issue of Total Guitar magazine describes how Hank Marvin, the guitarist in Cliff Richard’s band The Shadows, asked Vox to create a louder amp, so his guitar could be heard above the deafening noise of Cliff’s screaming, pubescent audience. Thus was born the ultimate British valve amp, launched in 1959 to great acclaim. The AC30 is one of the most recorded guitar amplifiers in rock history, not surprising given its universally acclaimed warmth and three-dimensional tonal character. What is slightly surprising is that it seems to have lost none of popularity over the years, quite the reverse in fact.

With a number of modern enhancements including blendable channels, a true bypass FX loop, spring reverb and master volume, to name just a few, the new AC30 Custom Classic is an evolution of the original that is sure to become a classic in its own right.

A bit of history:

When the Vox AC-30 was launched, it didn’t take long for it to become the amp of choice for British rock bands, used by everyone from The Beatles (both George and John had AC-30s) to the Rolling Stones – and most other British Invasion bands who followed. Keith Richards said: “The Vox AC-30 is the best all-round British amp of all time, without a doubt.”

The AC-30 is an amp suited for most styles of music: Jeff Beck(in The Yardbirds) helped to invent garage and psych-rock with the help of a fuzz pedal and a Vox AC-30; Marc Bolan recorded some of the most enduring Glam Rock songs with it; Rory Gallagher helped to define 70’s Blues Rock with an AC-30; Brian May used AC30s (lots of them!) in Queen; Paul Weller kick-started a mod revival with his punk band The Jam and trusty Vox AC-30s, and The Edge of stadium rockers U2 still swears by his old AC-30.

Metal-heads be warned! The Vox AC-30 is not the ideal choice for crunchy, hi-gain tones. But, even so, Kirk Hammet of metal gods Metallica also fell in love with the sound of a Vox AC-30 and used it in the studio for the Load and Reload albums. He said: “I was also impressed with the Vox AC30, I didn’t really know how good that was before.”

Today, despite the popularity of many great amps (by Fender, Marshall, Orange or Hiwatt, for instance) it’s still the Vox AC-30 that is used, live or in the studio, by many of the biggest new British rock acts, crowning the Vox AC-30 as the classic Bristish rock’n'roll amp – as popular now as ever, having helped to shape the sound of some of the finest rock songs of the past 50 years!

Since the 90’s, the Vox AC-30 has been as essential to the new generation of British bands as it was in the 60’s. Bands who use/ have used AC-30 amps include Britpop legends such as Oasis, Suede, The Verve and Radiohead.

In the 2000’s, after a few years of the UK music scene being dominated by US-acts like the Strokes and White Stripes, The Libertines started a British rock revival with Vox AC-30s and became the most influential new English band of the decade. Since then, acts who have used AC-30s include Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian, Razorlight, The Kooks, Babyshambles, Mystery Jets and many, many others…

And on the other side of the Atlantic, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters is perhaps the most famous Vox AC-30 user. He told Total Guitar: “We used an AC30 on pretty much everything. You can go clean, dirty, bright or fat.”

The Vox AC-30 saga continues, and there’s no question it’ll help to define rock for many years to come. The question is – have you discovered how amazing this amp is yet? If not, check the models we have in stock and step into rock’n'roll history!
