El titular de la central nuclear de Almaraz II, situada en la provincia de Cáceres, siguiendo el procedimiento reglamentario ha comunicado al CSN un suceso notificable consistente en la parada no programada del reactor, por baja excitación del generador principal, según un comunicado del organismo regulador.

La nota, emitida ayer, indica que los sistemas de protección han actuado según lo previsto y el titular (las empresas Iberdrola, Unión Fenosa y Endesa) ya está evaluando las causas del incidente.

El suceso ha sido clasificado como nivel 0 en la Escala Internacional de Sucesos Nucleares (INES), y no ha supuesto riesgo alguno para los trabajadores, la población o el medio ambiente.

El pasado mes de abril los responsables de la central también se vieron obligados a detener de forma manual el reactor a causa de un incidente ocurrido durante las pruebas efectuadas en la bajada de carga para la parada por recarga.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials urged the operators of the Perry Nuclear Power Plant to improve human performance Thursday night…..………The review was completed Aug. 19 and marked the fourth time since March 2008 that the NRC alerted FENOC about these issues.

From July 2008 through June 2009, the assessment period continued to exhibit weaknesses in human performance, according to the review.

The findings for human performance increased from 12 to 20, which included planning, human error prevention techniques and oversight………..NRC officials said the Perry plant is not the only one to have such problems, though they added it will take time to implement change.

The publicly available data from past experimental breeder reactors indicate that a large number of unsolved technological problems exist and that the amount of “created” fissile material, either from the U238 → Pu239 or from the Th232 → U233 cycle, is still far below the breeder requirements and optimistic theoretical expectations.

Thus huge efforts, including many basic research questions with an uncertain outcome, are needed before a large commercial breeder prototype can be designed.

Even if such efforts are undertaken by the technologically most advanced countries, it will take several decades before such a prototype can be constructed. We conclude therefore, that ideas about near-future commercial fission breeder reactors are nothing but wishful thinking.

We further postulate that, no matter how far into the future we may look, nuclear fusion as an energy source is even less probable than large-scale breeder reactors, for the accumulated knowledge on this subject is already sufficient to say that commercial fusion power will never become a reality……”

Bien, jovenes ilustres seguidores de esta banda, que empezo sin querer nada y a despegado bastante bien, tanto que ya va por su primer grammy.  Todos saben que esta banda empezo con un letrero en ciudad juarez donde estaba una viejita y decia”se busca vocalista de” en letras pequeñas,” Sexo” En letras gigantes, femenino otra vez en letras pequeñas. Este anuncio lo puso Oro de neta. Sabemos quien lo contesto (no sabemos si lo contesto porque buscaba sexo xD!!).

Lo blondo, Oro de neta y Bonnz! son chavos con bastante conciencia social, algo surrealistas y al menos oro de neta con un humor bastante bizarro. Pero ¿Qué hago yo hablando de esta banda? Pues bien, dejando a un lado su historia (Supongo luego hare un post bien formado sobre ellos) resulta que estos chavos darán presentaciones gratuitas todos los viernes de octubre de este año en la estanción San Lazaro del metro.

Ya saben si los conocen o no, lleguenle, tengan cuidado recordemos que San Lazaro es una estación peligrosa y no faltaran las pinches lacras buscando chavitos ingenuos a quienes atracar. Lleguen temprano.

On sept 23rd, 2009, the closed beta server went live for the new game, Alliance of Valiant Arms. Published as a “free” to play game under ijji. This game is 100% free to play but the catch is when you spend a little green you can buy cool in-game items to help you level up faster or more easier. Thats how they make their money.

The game uses the impressive UT3 engine and stouts some impressive ragdoll physics. Its fun to shoot people in the head and their head actually moves thereby disruppting their aim – but enough blab..

If you want to get the game, download their launcher called the reactor. It is a little program similar to steam which lets you download and play all of the ijji branded games. Just choose the AVA game title and download away. Its only 1GB or so.

Escolher um poster de entre os disponíveis numa colecção para o colocar numa exposição é um acto até certo ponto polémico. Alguns dirão que se trata de corromper algo que já teve uma utilidade muito específica, desenraizando-o, descontextualizando-o, traindo a sua função original – ou seja, um poster não deveria estar numa exposição ou num museu. No entanto, este género de crítica não tem em conta o modo como os posters habitualmente circulam e como esta circulação faz parte do seu ciclo de vida natural. O próprio título de um ensaio escrito por Susan Sontag em 1970 – “Poster: Advertisement, Art, Political Artifact, Commodity” – chama a atenção para esta circulação, enunciando as diferentes funções que um poster pode assumir ao longo da sua vida.

Naturalmente, um designer dirá que a única função de um poster deveria ser comunicar, anunciando um produto, um evento, e que todas as outras funções possíveis são distorções da sua missão original. Mas, como todos os objectos de design, um poster é disputado para vários interesses, interpretações ou usos; aquele que foi determinado pelo designer ou pelo seu cliente é apenas um deles. Se um poster ainda é lembrado anos depois de ter sido feito, se não foi irremediavelmente esquecido, é porque é um objecto que, de alguma forma, vale a pena disputar.

No caso deste poster, nunca o tinha visto antes de o ter escolhido. Não sei exactamente qual foi o evento que anuncia. Posso assegurar que ainda cumpre uma das suas funções básicas – competir com outros posters –, porque de entre as centenas de posters presentes na colecção de Ernesto de Sousa, foi a minha primeira escolha.

Tentando argumentar essa escolha – no fundo a função de qualquer crítico –, posso dizer que o escolhi porque é um poster chamativo, feito no Estilo Internacional Tipográfico, também chamado Suíço. Aquilo que me chamou a atenção foi a imagem do “72”, tornado quase abstracto pelo kerning apertado, comprimido de maneira a encaixar entre os dois hexágonos em baixo, como se fosse parte de um sistema modular, tudo isto a assentar numa grelha vertical de quatro colunas. É uma composição muito forte, muito centralizada, acentuada pelas duas manchas de texto com alinhamentos simétricos. Significativamente, trata-se de uma lista de nomes próprios sem outra hierarquia que não a ordem alfabética, tudo em minúsculas, sem destaques, tal como era hábito na escola Suíça; é preciso lê-la para descobrir alguns nomes sonantes do design da época como Max Huber ou Bruno Munari.

Além do rigor formal, as outras razões que me levaram a escolher este cartaz são históricas, mas também afectivas. Não sei se esta é uma impressão apenas minha – calculo que não –, mas ver o número 72 em Helvetica, num cartaz feito no Estilo Suíço, lembra-me indirectamente os Jogos Olímpicos de Munique, cuja imagem criada por Otl Aicher se tornaria um dos exemplos mais canónicos da história do design gráfico. Embora a fonte de Munique seja a Univers e não a Helvetica, pode-se dizer que 72 foi um ano marcante para o design de estilo suíço. Foi nesse ano também que Wolfgang Weingart publicou um ensaio chamado “How Can One Make Swiss Typography?”, onde punha em questão muitos dos princípios do design suíço canónico, num dos passos inaugurais do pós-modernismo dentro do design gráfico – um dos exemplos que mostrava no artigo era precisamente um calendário experimental para o ano de 1972.

Finalmente, num registo definitivamente mais pessoal, Fevereiro de 1972, a data deste cartaz, é também a data do meu nascimento. Não é certamente um critério isento para uma escolha, mas, tal como já tinha dito no começo deste texto, um cartaz – sobretudo se for bem sucedido – é sempre disputado por vários interesses. A nostalgia não é o menor deles. O facto de anunciarem um evento ou um produto de uma maneira efémera não reduz um poster a um produto com prazo de validade curto, mas torna-o também numa representação por vezes muito pungente de outra época.

Este texto foi escrito para a exposição “O Que é Urgente Mostrar”, patente na Experimenta desde 9 de Setembro e comissariada por José Manuel Bártolo. No âmbito desta exposição vários designers  – Aurelindo Jaime Ceia, BarbaraSays, Diogo Vilar, Drop/João Faria, Martino&Jaña, Paulo T. Silva, Pedro Nora&Isabel Carvalho, R2 e eu mesmo – foram convidados a escolher um cartaz da colecção Ernesto de Sousa, criando um novo cartaz que estabelecesse um diálogo ou confronto com ele. Não sendo exactamente um designer mas um crítico, escrevi o texto acima como resposta a este cartaz da autoria de Gerevini/Risare.

The head of the United Nations atomic watchdog warned today that the agency has reached a deadlock with Iran over most aspects of its nuclear programme as he urged the country to credibly answer the international community’s concerns over potential military dimensions to the programme.

Mohamed ElBaradei, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), told a meeting of the agency’s 35-member Board of Governors that although Iran had cooperated on some issues, such as improving safeguards at a fuel enrichment plans, “on all other issues? there is stalemate.

“Iran has not suspended its enrichment-related activities or its work on heavy water-related projects as required by the Security Council, nor has Iran implemented the Additional Protocol [of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty],” Dr. ElBaradei said at the board meeting, held at IAEA headquarters in Vienna.

He called on Iran “to respond fully to all the questions raised by the agency in order to exclude the possibility of there being military dimensions to its nuclear programme.

“To this end, it is essential that Iran substantively re-engage with the clarify and bring to closure all outstanding issues, including the most difficult and important questions regarding the authenticity of information relating to the alleged weaponization studies, by granting the agency access to persons, information and locations.”

Dr. ElBaradei said that if Iran does not implement the Additional Protocol, the IAEA “will not be able to provide credible assurances about the absence of undeclared nuclear activities in Iran, especially given Iran’s past record of failing to declare material and activities.”

Iranian authorities must also clarify their future intentions regarding the nuclear programme, he stressed.

“This is essentially a question of confidence-building between Iran and the international community through comprehensive dialogue and other measures. I call on all parties to begin this dialogue as soon as possible and urge Iran to respond positively to the recent United States initiative in this regard,” said Dr. ElBaradei, referring to an offer of talks.

Elsewhere in his report to the board, the Director General also said he was dismayed by allegations of some Member States that information concerning Iran’s nuclear programme had been withheld from the board by the IAEA secretariat, calling them “politically motivated and totally baseless.”

Turning to Syria, he said that while authorities in Damascus had cooperated with the IAEA over its verification activities at the Miniature Neutron Source Reactor, they have not yet granted the agency access to information, locations, equipment or materials concerning a destroyed building at Dair Alzour, which has been alleged by some to be the site of a nuclear reactor.

“I urge Syria to cooperate with the agency in its verification activities related to the nature of the Dair Alzour site. It is in Syria’s interest to enable the agency to corroborate its statements. I also call on other States which may possess information relevant to the agency’s verification to make such information available.”

Are you scheduled for a medical procedure that involves nuclear isotopes? If so, you had better start making arrangements for it as soon as you can: the nuclear research facility in Canada that produces many of the the needed nuclear isotopes is offline. When it went offline in May the first estimate was that it would be down for three months, but now the experts are saying that it will be shut down until at least 2010. To put it mildly, that’s not good.

Atomic Energy of Canada, Ltd. (AECL) is working to fix the problem, but repairing a nuclear reactor is a delicate task – and some physicians don’t think it will ever be functional again. British hospitals are receiving less than 50% of the isotopes that they need and a 2007 shutdown affected 50,000 patients in the United States.

Radioactive Isotopes can’t be stored and must be produced on an “as needed” basis. Do not be surprised if a needed test is pushed back or an alternative test is scheduled.

Interesting stuff going on. As I write this (and listen to Alter Bridge), I ponder design in general. And that brings me to the question, “What the hell does ponder really mean anyway?” Like, do people really use this word still? I’m Pondering…. Maybe we should send it to the JunkYard for words? Like, “heathen,” “thou,” or maybe “economy.” (If I hear the word economy one more time, I’m gonna start an Uzi revolt.)

1. THE BENTLEY MULSANNE

Kinda expensive. Kinda luxurious. Kinda bad gas mileage. BAD ASS. This is the car you want to roll up to the beach in. 9′ Longboard on top. Trunk fulla wetsuits, sexwax and extra bikinis. …I’m just sayin.’

2. THE GT CROSSOVER CONCEPT

What IS this? …Um. …Ok, what can I say about this weird inline 2 seater? It’s kinda not right in a whole “not right” sorta way. BUT, you have to respect design. My cup ‘o hot chocolate may not be your cup o’ hot chocolate. And THIS? Is not my cup o’ hot chocolate.

3. THE LEATHERMAN WRATH

I like this, despite that fact that you can’t really tell exactly what it is. Part Cyborg, part Harley, part… hula hoop. It just looks bug-like and cool. And that, my friends, is what belongs on the street. BRING IT!

4. MY REACTOR NUCLEUS

Now, I just got this the other day from REACTOR. It’s so cool, it should be a car. (In fact, I think there’s a button that transforms it into a Ferrari California. Pretty sure.) But, this watch is a clear statement that automotive design affects ALL design. And that’s cool.

5. THE JAGUAR MARK 21 LIMO

Yes, Limo. And since it doesn’t look ANYTHING like a Jaguar, it’s fair game for my design dissection. But THIS, is the most cool cockroach car I’ve seen in a while. The doors gullwing up and you step inside to Jaguar heaven. And what IS Jaguar heaven? Ahhh,,   …….gggrrrrrrrrrr….

6. SV9 COMPETIZIONE

Yes, in Italian, SV-9 means CORVETTE. Wait a tick… I think it actually means Bad Corvette. Or maybe Ripoff. I forget. At any rate, the Corvette,… uh, I mean SV-9, looks sweet. So sweet, that it reminds me of a car that the late GM use to build before they imploded. Now,… what WAS the name of that car? It was like a bird, or a fish. Started with a “C,” I think….

Oh, yea. Corvette.

MIT researchers have created innovative designs for nuclear fuels that will allow the cooling water inside a nuclear reactor to extract more heat from the uranium fuel. Their new fuels have channels that increase the exposed hot surface area and bumps that churn up the passing water, ensuring that fresh water is continuously brought to the hot surface, thus increasing the cooling effect. These new designs could boost the amount of energy recovered in the same volume of fuel by 30–50 percent, while reducing the cost of electricity by as much as 7 percent.

Nuclear power plants now provide about one-fifth of all the electricity used in the United States. Adding more nuclear plants—or getting more power out of the ones we have—could help us meet growing energy demand without adding to greenhouse gas emissions or oil imports.
