Flashback Friday comes from Julie Buxbaum’s After You, where the main character Ellie remembers even

Flashback Friday comes from Julie Buxbaum’s After You, where the main character Ellie remembers events in her life and the books that correspond.

For me, it has always been about books. I can tell you what I was reading when the Twin Towers fell (White Teeth), or when Lucy crashed her mother’s Buick and broke her nose when she was seventeen (Prince of Tides), or when Greg called to say Sophie had been born, 6lbs, 7oz. (The Accidental Tourist). When in fourth grade, Eric Schwartz passed me a note saying I like you and then asked me to give it to Lucy for him (Sweet Valley High #3, Playing with Fire), and in eighth when Lucy got elected student-body president and I was picked to be delegate (Pet Sematary and Love Story, alternating between the two). When my parents told me they were getting divorced (The World According to Garp) and when Phillip asked me to marry him (Play It As It Lays).

_____

I gave blood recently and was lucky enough to not be rejected for an iron deficiency. The last three tries I’ve had my fingers poked only to be turned away. The finger poking is the worst part for me. I whine when I type for days (which, truthfully, is part of why I’ve neglected this dear blog of mine…)

So, this time I had Dan Brown’s The Lost Symbol with me to keep me occupied after I read all manner of pamphlets on what countries I was forbidden to travel within the last 10 years. Anybody that knows Dan Brown knows his books are fast-paced page turners and this one is no exception. I would have let them take two pints if they were so inclined.

The last time I was rejected I was reading Jennifer Weiner’s Goodnight Nobody. It was not my favorite of hers, but I paid much more attention to the needle that time. :)

Happy Thanksgiving everyone — and if you haven’t donated blood recently, please consider doing so! You can save up to three lives with just one donation, and with a good book the time passes quickly.

I have now started to read ‘Calvin for Armchair Theologians,’ by Christopher Elwood. I have to admit that I come to this book with a very doubtful attitude. The front cover illustration of John Calvin and the many ‘comic-like’ illustrations throughout the book worry me. I just don’t get a sense that this book is a serious treatment of John Calvin. That is the impression that presents when just looking at the book – I hope to be proven wrong for having ‘judged a book by its cover.’ The illustrations in the book are by Ron Hill, who is apparently a freelance illustrator and cartoonist.

I have to admit that the ‘armchair theologian’ part of the title also gives me a poor impression of the book – it sort of gives me the picture of a guy who loves to watch sport on the TV while sitting in his armchair, while not really taking the sport seriously in his actual life – has nothing to do with it in reality, in that he doesn’t play sport. This is the idea that ‘armchair theologian’ paints for me, which is an approach to theology that is far removed from the Bible’s idea of involvement with the truth.

But, as I said, I hope to be proven wrong for having ‘judged a book by its cover.’

As readers of this Blog would know, I have been reading ‘The Reformers and Their Stepchildren,’ by Leonard Verduin. I have now completed this book and maintain that this is a book that should be read by all Reformed believers. It is a brilliant treatment of both the Reformers and those who sought a more ‘radical’ reform, in order to bring the church back to that which was modelled on the New Testament example.

Verduin deals with many of the disputed areas between the Reformers and the Stepchildren, and in so doing shows how the Reformers chose to go only so far in their work of reformation and indeed how some chose to back peddle in some areas. As much as I respect many of the Reformers (if not all), I have always been saddened by their refusal to fully reform the church/separate from it, and to set up a church based on the New Testament model, which was something the stepchildren also sought. The Reformers treatment of the stepchildren will always be a blight on their legacy also.

Read this book without being biased either way and allow the truth of the Scriptures to determine the path on which you walk. There is much food for thought in this book and a real challenge for Reformed believers throughout.

“Essentials” lists abound, especially online; the shoes a man “must own,” books he “must read,” places he “simply must visit.” Most of the enumerated essentials are anything but. Some change daily.

Still, some things are much closer to mandatory than others. For instance, always vote your conscience and inform your choice; don’t be swayed by irate volume. Exercise. Also, cultivate a preference for the tasteful and refined over the loud and garish. Appreciate family, friends, and food. Read good books.

Be polite. Ask other people about themselves, and listen to their answers.

A step further from necessary, but still likely good ideas: watch The Godfather. Go to museums. Develop at least a passing knowledge of the mechanics of guns. Spend time outdoors.

And if there’s still time: know the difference between a sport coat and a blazer. Pick up squash. Reconsider how often wearing socks is really necessary. Wear clothes that fit. Don’t wear square-toed shoes; you’re not a ninja. Don’t wear athletic shoes with pants, and invest in some good stationary.

Though not essential, some of these things are close, and all are worthwhile.

You can imagine me writing up a story to link up all the links above (probably more Twilight hate), but I won’t. It was disastrous day. I Getz hit by Optimus Prime in the morning. It Getz knocked up in workshop now. Waiting on Prime to pay me in a few mins. Furthermore, my previous mcompany wiggled their way through skipping on paying me for 1 week’s “work”. Even after we had a little agreement on some isuses. HR = devil. Also waiting for my payslip to check if they skimped on EPF.

At least I am alive. I am glad I bought a solid car and that it won’t cost as much as Hadi’s Bmer oil tank which leaked after going through the fabulous factory road on the way back from futsal. And it was good we had a superb futsal game, beating some guys we don’t get to beat often. My ankle having no recurrence of the injury. Hope to go badminton soon!

Yes I’ll be watching New Moon tomorrow. More joy =.=

So recently I’ve been asked by a few friends what some good blackberry apps are. Many out there. I’m posting this via WordPress app. Ill just give you the must-haves. I’m assuming you have all the social apps like msn messenger, blackberry messenger, facebook, twitter, email, etc. Here we go!

BuzzMe: Makes your berry vibrate while ringing, as well as customize the LED colour for different types of messages.

eBay: Just released today, this app is great for any ebay user, and even has push updates and a berry integrated watch list.

e-GPS: GPS app that runs undetected in the background. Remotely locate (sends you GPS mapped location of your phone), ring (even on vibrate), memory wipe, and retrieve contacts.

Mobile Minutes Tracker: Simple app logs onto your carrier, allowing you to track minutes, texts, data, and your bill all based on your current plan.

Poynt: GPS based searching allows you to find nearby businesses, people (by name or reverse number and address lookup), movies (by theater or movie), restaurants (by type, name, or location), or map of your area.

Radio Companion: Streaming radio of most (all that I wanted) radio stations AM and FM. Via email, support told me that it streams at roughly 14mb per hour. Not bad even for a wimpy 500mb data plan.

Shazam: Hold up to music that you wanna know the name of. Simple.

Vlingo: Great free voice control app that allows you to voice google, dial, memo, task, email, text, and launch apps. I love the note to self feature that emails me (in text) what I say.

WeatherBug: App informs you of forecast, current cast, and displays current temp and weather on its live icon.

A reader just commented on the search for finding his passion. He says, “This has become so frustrating that I wish I had never read Dan’s books….how can he say ‘that even a 10 year old knows what they are passionate about’ when I have absolutely NO CLUE!! Apparently God doesn’t want me to know either because that prayer hasn’t been answered yet.”

Unfortunately we often make God our Santa Claus rather then our Creator. If we keep looking for candy canes to be dropped in our stocking I’m quite sure we’ll be disappointed. If we recognize we are “children of the King” we will see our gifts and put them to use. I don’t want to heap guilt or anguish on anyone still struggling to find their gifts and passion. But if we are looking outwardly for that insight we will be disappointed or misdirected. Look at what God has already revealed to you – in trusting your sense of peace and joy as you recognize what you enjoy. God is not holding anything back – don’t put Him in the position of having to make pigs fly to get your attention.

We had a really good time at the Book Swap. Some really good books got swapped around and can’t wait to read all of them. Thank you for everyone who came and shared their favorite reads.

The theme for the book swap was New Moon, since the premier for the movie was that evening. We enjoyed some Italiano with bread and tiramasu, some sinful bread, vampire bitten cookies, cupcakes in honor of FORKS, WA., vampire Cheese Baseball with cracker glove, 7 layer vampire dip, red punch, red blood type drinks, (with printables from hostess with the mostess blog) and flavored coffee.

Hi.
*waves sheepishly*
Remember me? I’m an everyday superstar and I haven’t done much of anything on my list lately. And I’ve not blogged about it either.

My trip on the Woulda-Coulda-Shoulda train finally ended. Finally.

And I finally finished reading The Leader’s Toolkit by Cy Charney. Finally.

It took me an excrutiatingly long time to read (I had it sitting on my bookshelf crying out to be read for nearly a year before I even cracked the cover open), and I was only reading it in fits and spurts. That should say something. However, I particularly enjoyed three of the chapters: one was on managing partnerships, another was on downsizing, and the other was on stakeholders.

And that’s it. Goal number 54? Yeah, that’s done. I’m hoping that because I’m excited to read the next few books on my list (hey, what can I say, I’m going through a reading spurt) that I make it through those ones a little faster.

What’s the longest it’s ever taken you to finish reading a book?

For the last few years, I have been bemoaning the fact that a fellow Hotlibrarytech has an awesome display case in his library and I don’t. It is a lovely glass curio cabinet. I confess, I have been coveting my neighbor’s display case.

The curio cabinet was stored in his library, but apparently never used. When he started at his new school, there the cabinet sat, dusty and unused. But being the ”HLT” that he is, he saw its potential. These photos are from Halloween when he fills it with leaves, spiders, webs, scary books and even has a raven statue to sit on top. The raven wears a sign that says, “Nevermore.” Is he clever or what?

Recently I stood in the lobby of my library eyeing the three empty glass display cases that are mounted to the wall.
Basically I gave my self a good talking to….Okay, so the cases don’t have lighting in them…fake votive candles can fix that…so it isn’t free-standing in the middle of my library…I can always use that space for another specialized bookcase/display….the gears in my brain started turning and I got busy.

Flash back – A few years ago, I had a display in the cases for Read Across America Week to honor Dr. Seuss’ birthday. I added the library’s collection of Dr. Seuss’ books along with a stuffed Cat In The Hat and a Read Across America hat. My boss and I added our own Read posters featured our children, reading. The display was up for…a while…actually a very long while….”How long have you been seventeen?”
If there were Bulletin Board police, I would have been cited.

But, you see I had lost my “Creativity Muse”.
The next school year, for nearly ten months, the cases housed the Honors Spanish class project of “Day of The Dead” displays. At the end of the year the cases were emptied.
There they sat, covered with dust and fingerprints until one weekend during the summer I had an epiphany.
Actually, I cleaned out my son’s room, and took his Dr. Seuss’ collection of books. We had well over 35 titles and from what I understand, there are a total of 75 available from the good doctor.

I added my son’s books along with 3-D artifacts…the yellow Seuss border was stapled to the shelf edge.

The 3-D items that I added to the case, I either had, or purchased them at Michael’s, JoAnne’s or the 99 cent store. There are stuffed animals…the small Cat in the Hat was actually a cat toy. Seriously, whatever you do, don’t tell my cat. I hot glued 10 artificial apples together for Ten Apples Up On Top. There is a large foam “A” for the ABC book and I managed to find a T-Rex for the Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Hunt.

Do you see the Green Eggs & Ham game in the lower right hand corner? That belonged to my son.
Don’t be envious. Playing that game was like watching the Neverending Story - there is no conclusion.

The center section is covered with black paper and edged with a new READ border found at Michael’s. For the lettering, I used the Cricut Expressions machine and cut 4 – 7 inch letters out of white cardstock….(the same ream we used to made Turkey hands.) Bragging – the photos are my boss’s children, my nephews and my son.
I especially love the photo of my son, he is reading to his baby cousin on the kitchen floor of Great Grandma’s house.

Next, I added my collection of fall/Halloween picture books at the bottom of the display. Some are brand new; some have been in our family for years. If you have young children, you must pick up It’s Fall by Linda Glaser and illustrated by Susan Swan. Don’t miss Fall Is Not Easy by Marty Kelley. Also pictured is Goodnight Goon by Michael Rex, a parody on the famous book Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown.

During October, I added plastic jack-o-lanterns, two little LCD ghosts from Pic N’ Save, and lots of silk fall leaves. The leaves were $1.99 at Michael’s for a 50 count package. I absolutely love it when students stop and point out the books that they read as young children.

Now it is November: I have had these two mini Beany baby squirrels for years and never knew what to do with them.

One of them cozies up quite nicely with The Kitchen Window Squirrel by Harold S. Longman, illustrated by Nola Langer. (Glad I didn’t send that book to Rosie O’Donnell when she used to complain about squirrels on her talk show.) Thanksgiving books join the fall picture books. If you haven’t read Cranberry Thanksgiving by Wende &
Harry Devlin to your children, borrow a copy from your local library.

The basket holds the rest of the artificial apples not used for Ten Apples Up On Top. Pinecones are an easy decorating accent….actually all I have to do is walk around my campus and find dozens…of course, I could also find live squirrels, but I doubt they would be very cooperative or sit nicely in the display case!
