I have been doing something very important to my development as a Special Educator this morning.  Updating my feeds in Google Reader to include many more Special Education resources.

I am at my max or a little over in my ability to follow this number of feeds, I find that when I go over 100 feeds that I just skim read more of the articles.  I will probably go in and do a really brutal pruning over the Holiday Break in December.  By then I will have a much better idea of the feed subscriptions that I want or need to follow.

Please look at my Blogroll for some of the new feeds that I have added to my feed that immediately struck me as being very informative or that I have followed in my other blogs.  Others that I have added I will look at for a while before adding them to my Blogroll or pruning them from gReader.

I have purposely attempted to add a variety of resources, so that I do not get in that “we squeak” the same syndrome.  I wanted parent’s, lawyers, politicians, State Education, other K-12 educators and higher education.  I also purposely sought out both the right and the left based blogs that focus on education and disabilities.  I want a wide divergence of views and opinions – I don’t have to agree with what I am reading, but I believe that I do need to look at both sides of issues and stereotypes.

Hopefully, all this information provides me with “things” that I can actually use in the classroom to help my students.

As always – do the right things for the right reasons – today and tomorrow.

I am a student and a wife. But I am also an artist, and as everyone knows, artists crave attention. Hence this Blog. Here is where I will cry out into the great, uncaring Blogosphere (of DOOM!) “See me! See what I can do!” and hope that some of it is read, and more importantly that some of it is both useful and entertaining. In the coming pages I will write on many topics without doubt. However, all of these topics will be connected to my great passion and hobby, reading. Of course, in order for there to be reading, there must by necessity be writing as well. Therefore, this will be both a Reader’s and a Writer’s blog. There will be both unofficial, informal book reviews of my favorite authors, both new and ancient, and commentary on my trials, tribulations, and experiences as an Author.

Though I am not yet Published, this makes me no less a writer. I write many things, most of them Fantasy related, or else Academic papers. My first novel is in its first draft stages, thanks in no small part to the wonderful, wonderful organization, NaNoWriMo. Though it is unfinished, I believe it will be worth sharing with the world once completed, and to that end I am striving. Here-to-fore, I have only written small pieces of Fiction intended solely for my friends, or academic essays intended solely for my Professors and the University archives. This foray into Novelling is both terrifying and exhilarating. I sincerely hope the terror dissipates eventually, and the exhilaration remains eternally.

I hope to update this blog once weekly, currently on Sundays. Of course, as life’s many surprises, twists, and turns ambush me, doubtless this will change. So, I do not promise continuous, endless posts on a fixed schedule. However, I do make it my pledge that should a change in schedule, or a brief cessation of updates become necessary, I will do my utmost to give fair warning, or at least an explanation.

So! Now for some content. As this is the Beginning, I do not propose to dwell overly long on a topic. However, I feel that some mention should be made here of two wonderful organizations which have helped me grow as a writer already in the short period of time I have been associated with them. They have also partially inspired me to create this Blog, and some acknowledgement should be made to them. These two are Nanowrimo, the National Novel Writing Month organization, and Absolute Write, specifically their open forum. Both provide invaluable communities for new writers.

Nanowrimo (found here) is great for helping the great procrastinators of the world (i.e. myself) get a first draft done and done quickly. It forces one to write every day, and meet specific goals. It is also a tremendous amount of fun, and I would encourage anyone who enjoys writing, from the already published author to the absolute beginner who never intends to let anyone read their writings ever.

I found the Absolute Write forums (they are here) through Nanowrimo. It is a community of authors, from fiction to bloggers, to writers of textbooks. They also range in experience, again from the published-several-times-over Authors to the rank beginner just writing their first short story. I would encourage any author, of whatever level, to at the very least browse these forums. For one thing, each individual forum has a number of stickies full of excellent information put together by very kind and generous people. And best of all, you can browse the forums without actually creating an account, though of course in order to post, one must register. I would urge one to register immediately, as it can take some time to get approved by the moderators, so if you register before you develop that burning question, you don’t have to wait around and possibly forget it!

So, I think I have rambled on for long enough now, and will bid you all adieu and say “See you next Sunday!”

Va bene, ho deciso. Sono un maniaco dell’auto-regalo natalizio: quest’anno l’oggetto prescelto sarà il lettore e-book Kindle.
Ecco, certamente i limiti (utilizzandolo in Italia) sono ancora moltissimi. So che i titoli in Italiano sono pochi(ssimi) ed i quotidiani pressochè inesistenti (solo “La Stampa”, se non erro, è realmente disponibile).

Alcune ricerche dicono che il “natale” dell’ebook sarà il prossimo, il 2010. Saranno mesi cruciali per gli editori? Ed in Italia?

In Italia si discute di Banda larga e degli 800 milioni “scomparsi”, figuriamoci se si pone attenzione sul mondo dell’editoria digitale e dei dispositivi annessi (e connessi).

Non parliamo del mercato USA, dove, sembra esser in un mondo parallelo ed opposto (pare che già nel 2009 i libri scaricati siano circa 1.000.000).
Il prezzo è abbordabile (259$ per varsione “International” su Amazon), quello dei libri digitali molto di più.

Mettiamola così: sarà anche un modo per perfezionare il mio inglese e per sentire un “pezzo” di nuova tecnologia tra le mani. Perchè insomma, un dispositivo che pesa meno di 300 grammi, che contiene fino a 1500 libri, che (potenzialmente) ti permette di effettuare un download di un libro in meno di un minuto, non deve esser male.

Ecco, poi ci sono i concorrenti, lo so. Ho già fatto una prima analisi di quelle che sono i diretti concorrenti del Kindle: Nook di Barnes&Noble su tutti (dovrebbe esser disponibile a brevissimo). Anche Sony si sta muovendo in questa direzione.

Ecco, ripeto, io avrei deciso. Poi, vabbè, a Natale manca più di un mese.

Last-minute holiday shoppers who may still be on the fence about adding an e-reader to their gadget collections now have more reason to second guess their purchase.

Shipments of Sony’s new $399 Daily Edition Reader may not make it home in time for Christmas, according to a report in today’s Wall Street Journal. Likewise, pre-orders placed over the next few weeks for Barnes & Noble’s nook device may not secure a holiday delivery date. Kindles, however, are as of now good to go for December 25th deliveries.

Company executives at both Sony and B&N were quick to hold up the delay as an example of their devices’ retail success. However, there is no way to know how many units were actually pre-ordered. It is possible that both companies low-balled their estimates due to the general opacity of the e-reader demand landscape. On the other hand, they also may have built in this “run on supply
strategy purposely to build product hype. It may very well be that each company is trying to make their respective device this year’s Tickle Me Elmo, envisioning media hype-friendly images of consumers overwhelming their websites on Black Friday or selling nooks and Readers on eBay to the highest bidder.

It seems especially odd that Sony, a long-time electronics maker that should be reasonably well versed in electronics supply-chain planning is struggling with demand issues. Barnes and Noble as a bookseller is arguably less familiar with the strategy of determining electronics demand and distribution, but is still a retailing giant who should have been better prepared.

Hype machine or no, the very prospect of holiday delivery date pressure may be enough to influence some consumers to wait it out until the next best thing comes along.
