I was at Yankee Stadium when Darryl Strawberry hit a walk off 3 run homer to beat the Royals back in 1997, it was epic, oh yeah, and his 300th career homerun to boot. That may have been one of Darryl’s last glorious baseball moments.  The next year he was diagnosed with colon cancer and that was that for baseball. Strawberry was a physically intimidating figure at the plate, standing 6′ 6” with a wad of backy in his mouth, let alone the homerun swing, or the off the field reputation. But Strawberry’s numbers are superlative and nobody can deny the legend status. There’s something pathetic and depressing about the devolution of a legend, on that tip, I present to you Yellowman.

There’s considerably more reasons to recognize the status of Dancehall legend Yellowman then there is for Mr. Strawberry. Although both men came from humble roots, one were humbler, Yellowman was an albino on a superstitious and black island called Jamaica. As one biographer put it:

HE WAS deserted by his parents, scorned at stage shows, chased away by producers, banned from the airwaves and developed skin cancer. A doctor even told him he would live only three years more.
That was in 1983.

Today you can find Yellowman touring and performing hundreds of his tracks from one of his over 50 albums.  He’s certainly not pretty to look at, and his lip surgery has made him sound different, and a little less comprehensible. But go peep him, because you never know when you’ll see a legend rekindle their fire and hit one out of the park.

There haven´t been that much reggaemusic here at Othersided so let me therefor give you the best at once! Glesbygd´n is a band consisted by 9 musicians from a little village in the far north of Sweden called Arvidsjaur, the name Glesbygd´n is also translated “sparsely-populated area” in english.

They are producing the most perfect rootreggae with a lot of influences from dub, folk and soul mixed up with a beautiful melancholy and sad touch. The leadsinger Arvid has a pretty unic singingvoice and in the new album he is singing in a old swedish dialect called “Arvidsjaurbondska”.

In the song “Áiga ” they have invited a special guest called Simon Issat Marainen who is doing a eyewettening Sami Jojk.

It was good, hell it was fantastic! This years edition was a well balanced mix of high quality groups and artists! Well done you guys and girls! And the Global Dance on friday was cool too! Wauw!

So listen up all dancefreaks, let me introduce you for Black Grass who is giving us a tight and eclectic blend of sounds, ranging through broken beat, ragga to hip-hop to ska to funk to latin and back again via soulful grooves that will make those dancing feets move for sure, spanning multiple genres and styles, whilst maintaining a consistent vibe with a groovy feel. The hip-hop stylings are present and combine seamlessly with the apparent influences that make Black Grass an absolute class act.

Signed to Catskills Records, this label was formed 1997 by a London/Brighton collective to release underground talent from their home turf. The label represents the best that both scenes has to offer, and has since spread it’s wings to Europe and the rest of the world with the signing of many international artists. Unlike other record labels there is no formula, no particular style and no particular genre of music that represents Catskills. They’ve said it before and they’ll say it again loudly for the people in the cheap seats; “it’s all about the headnod Factor, if it’s got it then we’ll spin it ’til it breaks our necks”.

Dat er uit Afrika nog steeds belangrijke acts komen bewijzen Seun Kuti , zoon van de legendarische Fela Kuti en zeker ook Amadou & Marian, het blinde echtpaar uit Bamako (Mali) die net een geweldige nieuwe cd uit hebben.

Nog niet zo bekend maar in ieder geval een mooi verhaal is het ontstaan van The Very Best. Esau Mwamwaya is geboren in Malawi waar hij drums speelt in diverse bands. In 1999 verhuist hij naar Oost-London waar hij nog steeds een 2e-hands winkel runt. In dezelfde straat woont ook dj/producers-duo: Radioclit. Nadat ze een fiets bij hem kopen volgt er een muzikale samenwerking onder de naam: The Very Best. Een mixtape/bootleg album is nu uitgebracht als FREE DOWNLOAD Hun stijl is rauw en ze coveren nummers van o.a M.IA., Vampire Weekend en The Beatles.

Dry & Heavy is a Japanese dub and reggae band formed in 1991 by drummer Shigemoto Nanao (a.k.a Dry) and bassplayer Takeshi Akimoto (a.k.a Heavy). The name comes from a renowned Burning Spear album of the same name.

What really makes this band notable is one of their female singers Likkle Mai with her wispy ethereal singing voice, her pixie-like crooning proves a likable contrast to the booming bass-heavy music.

Dry & Heavy molds a thick, slow, rumbling dub sound wellgrounded in the classic roots reggae style mixed up with some cool jazz fusion funky electric propelled guitars kinda thing wich just makes you wanna just sit back relax, smile, enjoy and get together with mr doobie!

E’ sempre bello andare ad un concerto, ma questa era la prima volta che andavo ad uno reggae.

Purtroppo (e me ne pentiro’ per tutta la vita siamo arrivati tardi, giusto in tempo per sentire la fine del concerto…”One Love” cantata da tutto il pubblico! Quel poco che ho visto(/sentito) era davvero splendido, questi tipi sul palco coi rasta o con un po’ di barba bianca…Tipi che hanno suonato con Bob Marley quando ancora era tra noi. Poi il bello e’ che non avevano atteggiamento da super star, hanno smesso di suonare, hanno sistemato gli strumenti, berrettone in testa e sono passati in mezzo al pubblico per uscire. No, voglio dire, in mezzo al pubblico. Per uscire. Non sono andati a nascondersi dietro al palco, svignandosela ed evitando la gente, come tutti quelli con un poco di fama che ho visto finora. C’e’ qualcosa che ammiro di queste persone!

Ê! Alguém aprendeu a colocar vídeos no blog! UHU! Alguém conhece Chimarruts? Reaggae gaúcho de qualidade!

Ah, vale citar que esse é o som que ‘embala’ várias coisas! ^^’
