It’s been seven years since Tom Waits unleashed on the world his brilliant, barmy work of “cubist funk”, Real Gone. So there was obviously a huge amount of anticipation about his new offering, Bad As Me. What would he do next? Would he bang together blocks of wood in a wardrobe, or sit down at a piano like it’s 1976?

Well, joyfully, the answer is that he is doing a bit of both. Bad As Me takes many aspects of Tom Waits’ incredible career and squeezes them into one album. With a soft vocal over gentle Spanish guitars, Back in the Crowd is one of the prettiest and saddest songs Waits has ever written. “If you don’t want these arms to hold you/If you don’t want these lips to kiss you/If you found someone new/Put me back in the crowd/Put the sun behind the clouds,” he sings like a man trying to hold together his breaking heart. Juxtaposing this is a shouty title track and the barked Hell Broke Luce, which sounds like it’s taken directly from Real Gone. Meanwhile, Get Lost sees Waits go all rock n roll, Kiss Me is an optimistic Blue Valentines for 2011 and Last Leaf is pared back and acoustic.

Bad As Me gets better with every listen and is one of the albums of the year. Existing fans will love it, while newbies will find this the ideal place to begin their Tom Waits collection. Let’s just hope we don’t have to wait seven years for the next record.

‘Ey, a quick review.

So the new Tom Waits record, huh? There’s one thing that should be established immediately – it’s amazing. I mean, really, it’s totally great and I love it – but - that was pretty much a given, no surprises there. Tom Waits fans across the globe will be ecstatically glad to own it, and will annoy their not-so-much-Tom-Waits-fan friends for months to come by growling “Hell… Broke… Luce” and “heavens to murgatroyd!” at any given opportunity.

Being a born and raised Tom Waits fanatic, it’s going to make it slightly difficult to say what’s coming next: so far, it hasn’t wowed me like Real Gone did. While not being disappointed per se, I’m not as gut-bustingly thrilled as I expected I would be. The abrasively brilliant title track doesn’t quite (or hasn’t quite yet, as these things’re often growers) come up to the heights of Make It Rain or Hoist That Rag, while the gruff melodies of the softer tracks are occasionally so similar to previous songs as to feel almost, dare I say it, disposable.

In a sense Mr Waits is his own enemy here, having produced such a huge volume of diverse, clattering music it becomes necessary to judge it in it’s own microcosmic Waitsian world. That should be a testament to his greatness. Nobody would bother pointing out that “the new Coldplay record (probably) sounds a teensy-bit like the the last however-many Coldplay records,” because it’s pretty much expected: endless echoes and reverberations of the same stadium pap. If it didn’t follow this pattern they’d probably lose a lot of their fans, as the Arctic Monkeys did with Humbug. So, Ok, I don’t know anything about the new Coldplay record, but you get what I’m saying.

I’m now thinking that no accurate rating can be ascribed to new records by established artists of repute, since each new peak of greatness simply redefines the criteria for judgement. The better you get, the more picky your audience. The same thing happened with Radiohead’s King Of Limbs which frequently received the snub “It’s not quite as phenomenally brilliant and/or challenging as some other phenomenally brilliant stuff they’ve done,” or thereabouts, which is really a startlingly boring (yes, guilty me) criticism to make.

So, anyway, the fact that the closest I can get to criticising Bad As Me is by suggesting it’s not quite as incredible as Real Gone, one of my favourite albums of all time, and isn’t quite as redefining or challenging as some of his earlier records, should definitely not put you off: it’s still frikkin’ awesome. Some stars.

Real Gone was the last album to wholly contain original Tom Waits music. And it also housed one of my all-time favourite Waits tracks: ‘Green Grass’.

‘Green Grass’

This was seven long years ago.

Of course there was the unforgettable and career defining triple-album Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards, which contained rare and unreleased material. But after that, Mr. Waits floated nonchalantly up into the actorsphere; where he landed roles in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and The Monster of Nix, that gravelly growl a perfect tool for acting.

And now, finally, Tom Waits will release his new album Bad As Me on October 24th by way of Anti- Records.

Check out a rather hilarious video of Thomas hosting a “private listening party” below, which is simply a blinkered commentary on internet piracy. This is why we love the man.

My momma taught me wrong from right.

I was born in the South
Sometimes I have a big mouth
When I see something that I don’t like
I gotta say it.

Well, we’ve been driving this road for a mighty long time
Paying no mind to the signs
Well, this neighborhood’s changed
It’s all been rearranged
We left that team somewhere behind.

Slow down, you’re gonna crash,
Baby you’re a-screaming it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out babe, you’ve got your blinders on
Everybody’s looking for a way to get real gone
Real gone.
Real gone.

But there’s a new cat in town
He’s got high-faded friends
Thinks he’s gonna change history

You think you know him so well
Yeah you think he’s so swell
But he’s just perpetuatin’ prophecy

(oh, c’mon)
Slow down, you’re gonna crash,
Baby you’re a-screaming it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out, you’ve got your blinders on
Everybody’s looking for a way
To get real gone
Real gone.
Real gone.
Real gone.
Uhh.

Well you can say what you want
But you can’t say it ’round here
‘Cause they’ll catch you and give you a whippin’

Well, I believe I was right when I said you were wrong
You didn’t like the sound of that
Now, did ya?

Slow down, you’re gonna crash,
Baby you’re a-screaming it’s a blast, blast, blast
Look out, you’ve got your blinders on
Everybody’s looking for a way to get real gone

Well here I come and I’m so not scared,
Got my pedal to the metal, got my hands in the air
Look out, you take your blinders off
Everybody’s looking for a way to get real gone
Real gone.
Real gone.
Ooh.
Real gone.
Real gone.

Waits not such great writing music, dependent on the album. Bone Machine great. Real Gone, not so much. Red House Painters put me, oddly, in a very calm, serene and moderately happy place.

We will move away from heartbreak (just for a moment!) and tackle something a little less overwhelming. Instead, we’ll be focusing on How’s It Gonna End. This song by Tom Waits comes off his last studio album Real Gone. It’s a very spare and sparse song about the eternal question of all life on earth and how it’s going to end. This isn’t a depressing song though, despite what you might think, the whole thing is told the way any Tom Waits song is told, in the back of a smokey bar very late at night. I’m not the type of person that really obsesses over death or how my life or the world is going to end, but like most people it’s popped in there occasionally. I’d much rather see how my life turns out, if I had a time machine, then to see exactly how I (or we) would end. But, this idea could pretty much apply to anything in your life. I mean, it all ends eventually. I’ll end this post with my favorite lines in the song, just so you know: A tree born crooked will never grow straight.

Due to those unforeseen circumstances that often force their way into our daily lives, I’m covering TWO HOURS of great music once again. Al from Mouth Radio can’t make it in, and I happen to not have a life on Tuesday nights, outside of What Planet, so there you have it!

This came at short notice, so I can’t even tell you what kind of wonderful things I’ll pull out of the bag for tonight. Hmm… This might be a good excuse to play a couple of those extra-long numbers that I’ve been putting off for a while because they just take up too much time in an hour-long show. Not everything will be an epic sound-poem or anything like that. I promise: it will all be good. I’ve been on a big jazz kick again lately, so don’t be surprised to hear some from the great jazz archive! I think I very well may toss in a couple of fun electro tunes, too, for good measure. We’ll see what I can fit into the time I’ve got.

Tune in from 7:00 to 9:00 tonight, plug in those headphones, brew some tea, sip some wine, maybe a fine scotch and enjoy!

I really enjoy the music of Tom Waits. I just wish he would
tour more often so that I could experience one of his concerts

Sheryl Crow canta a música inicial “Real Gone”:

John Mayer leva-nos numa viagem pela “Route 66″ que têm direito a entrar como história deste filme, embora seja encarada por muitos como secundária:

Descontraída como uma viagem deve ser, a música “Life is a Highway” dos Rascal Flatts, mostra um papel bastante importante no filme:

A última música que apresentamos é a Our Town de James Taylor. Cheia de emoção e carinho, caracteriza toda a humanidade que este filme consegue transmitir, mesmo que as personagens sejam feitas de metal.

She took all my money
And my best friend
You know the story
Here it comes again

I have no pride
I have no shame
You gotta make it rain
Make it rain

Since you’re gone
Deep inside it hurts
I’m just another sad guest
On this dark Earth

I wanna believe
In the mercy of the World again
Make it rain
Make it rain

Night’s too quiet
Stretched out alone
I need the whip of thunder
And the winds dark moan

I’m not Abel
I’m just Cain
Open up the Heavens
Make it rain

I’m close to Heaven
Crushed at the gate
They sharpen their knives
On my mistakes

What she done
You can’t give it a name
You gotta just make it rain
Make it rain
Yeah -eh

Without her love
Without your kiss
Hell can’t burn me
More than this

I’m burning with all this pain
Put out the fire
And make it rain

I’m born to trouble
Born to fate
Inside a promise
I can’t escape

It’s the same old World
But nothin’ looks the same
Make it rain
Make it rain

Gotta make it rain
Make it rain
You’ve got to
Make it rain
You got to
Make it rain
You got to

I stand alone here
I stand alone here
Singing

Make it rain
Make it rain
Make it rain

These lyrics are from a song by Tom Waits. Please enjoy and take some time to visit the pond today.

God said: don’t give me your tin horn prayers
Don’t buy roses off the street down there
Took it all and took the dirt road home
Dreaming of Jenny with the light brown hair

Night is falling like a bloody axe
Lies and rumors and the wind at my back
Hand on the wheel and gravel on the road
Will the pawn shop sell me back what I sold

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
I’m gonna take the sins of my mother
I’m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond

Birds cry warning from a hidden branch
Carving out a future with a gun and an axe
I’m way beyond the gavel and the laws of man
Still living in the palm of the grace of your hand

The world’s not easy, the blind man said
Turns on nothing but money and dread
Dog’s been scratching at the door all nite
Long neck birds flying out of the moonlight

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
I’m gonna take the sins of my mother
I’m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Down to the pond

Smack dab in the middle of a dirty lie
The star spangled glitter of his one good eye
Everybody knows that the game was rigged
Justice wears suspenders and a powdered wig

Dark town alley’s been hiding you
Long bell tolling is your Waterloo
Oh baby, what can you do
Does the light of god blind you
Or lead the way home for you?

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
Take the sins of my mother
I’m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Down to the pond

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
Take the sins of my mother
And take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Down to the pond

God all mighty for righteousness sake
Humiliation of our fallen state
Written in the book of tubold Cain
A long black overcoat will show no stain

Feel the heat and the burn on your back
The rip and the moan the stretch of the rack
All my belongings in a flour sack
Will the place I come from take me back

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
Take the sins of my mother
And take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Down to the pond

They’ll hang me in the morning on a scaffold yea big
To dance upon nothing to the Tyborn Jig
Treats you like a puppet when you’re under his spell
Oh the heart is heaven but the mind is hell

Jesus of Nazareth told Mike of the weeds
I’s born at this time for a reason you see
When I’m dead I’ll be dead a long time
But the wine’s so pleasing and so sublime

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
Take the sins of my mother
I’m gonna take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond
Down to the pond

Kissed my sweetheart by the China ball tree
Everything I done is between god and me
Only he will judge how my time was spent
29 days of sinning and 40 to repent

The horse is steady but the horse is blind
wicked are the branches on the tree of mankind
The roots grow upward and the branches grow down
it’s much too late to throw the dice again I’ve found

I’m gonna take the sins of my father
Take the sins of my mother
Take the sins of my brother
Down to the pond

I’m gonna wash them
I’m gonna wash them
I’m gonna wash the sins of my father
I’m gonna wash the sins of my mother
Wash the sins of my brother
Till the water runs clear
Till the water runs clear
Till the water runs clear

Man Man successfully did it once again. Blurring the lines between Transylvanian spaz-rock and soulful, bluesy compositions, the Philadelphia boys churned out another pleasing album on Anti- Records. Utilizing hand-claps, children’s toys, kazoos and other quirky instruments of the sort to compliment their excellent musicianship, this album boasts more than a few maniacal, shimmy-inducing tracks.

At first listen, if nothing else, you hear that Man Man has certainly stayed true to their hectic sound. Yes it’s true, Man Man are commonly referred to as Tom Waits rip-offs, but lead-singer Honus Honus can pull off a glittery gold headband and war paint much better than Waits ever could, I imagine.

Rabbit Habits is a great listen, however it isn’t as aggressive or experimental as Six Demon Bag. Tracks like “The Ballad Of Butter Beans” make me feel like I’m in a silent-film car chase scene. Or a circus. Both are fitting, actually, for pretty much all of these songs. “Top Drawer” and “Easy Eats Or Dirty Doctor Galapagos” definitely have a vintage, Vaudeville-esque vibe. On “Big Trouble”, Honus Honus’ vocals sound so similar to that of Waits’, it sounds like it could be straight off of Real Gone, if he maybe cut down his cigarette intake to under 5 packs a day.

In short, I would have liked to have seen Man Man go over the top cray-cray (crazy, for all you lames) with this album. Do I feel like they did? No. It’s a safely-done presentation of what the guys to best, and it doesn’t push them into a realm of super-godliness (although Honus Honus was our God Warrior Of The Week a few weeks ago) like I was expecting.

Oh well, I’ll just have to sit back and wait for the next tour to get the full Man Man experience. These tunes are much better heard live.
