Recentemente mi è capitato di avere a che fare con dei file in formato real da visualizzare sul web. Inutile dire che mi è sempre stato antipatico questo formato di file. In realtà esiste anche una versione di Real Player per Linux, tuttavia è un software proprietario e oltretutto non mi piace neppure tanto. È pur vero che esiste una sorta di versione open source, chiamata Helix Player, ma in realtà la licenza di questo software è alquanto contorta (ne devo aver letto un pezzo tempo fa, alla fine non era per nulla chiara). Inoltre è un player altrettanto bruttino.

Il metodo che usavo per aprire questi file era in genere quello di ricavarmi l’url dello stream con diversi passaggi, ma ovviamente si tratta di un sistema scomodo. Così alla fine ho deciso di riprovare ad usare un’estensione per Firefox che mi pareva di ricordare di aver sentito qualche tempo prima. L’addon si chiama MediaPlayerConnectivity e serve da “ponte” tra Firefox e i vari riproduttori multimediali che abbiamo installato sul pc.

Infatti dovete sapere che le ultime versioni di Vlc supportano i file in formato real! Bello, così posso fare sicuramente a meno di un player proprietario sul mio pc. Una volta riavviato Firefox è partito il configuratore automatico. Io ho tolto tutte le possibilità che mi dava l’estensione tranne quella dei file real, che ho assegnato a Vlc. Gli altri fine infatti sono meglio gestiti dal classico plugin video di Totem. In realtà ho tenuto anche le playlist in formato pls e m3u, ma non mi capita in genere di trovarne su internet sinceramente. Poi ho impostato in modo che il plugin agisse in modo automatico ed intelligente.

Non ricordo esattamente i valori che ho messo nella configurazione guidata, ma alla fine nelle preferenze dell’estensione ho questo:

Ora non vi resta che recarvi su un sito che fornisce stream multimediali in formato real. Per esempio potreste provare ad aprire Radio 2. Ecco cosa succede a me:

Ora sono contento. Mi capita poche volte di dover riprodurre questi file, ma se devo farlo almeno è un metodo comodo e immediato. L’unica cosa che non mi è del tutto chiara è come mai il plugin di Vlc per Firefox non fornisca il supporto per i file real… comunque sia non ha questa grande importanza.

How to get Real Player URLs for BBC Listen Again programmes? Go to the webpage iPlayer Real converter and turn the PID into a URL. This might not work forever as the BBC switched to Flash and wants to offer AAC and Windows Media streams instead of Real Audio. But for now the legacy Real Audio streams that can be downloaded and save with mplayer are still available.

Back in the days BBC used the RealPlayer for its Listen Again service. It supported inline use within the BBC website and streaming facilitating the standalone player. Then they created their BBC iPlayer which uses Adobe Flash. However, they still had a link to the .ram file which contains the link to the .ra RealAudio Stream.

But as you can read in the iPlayer help: Why am I no longer able to ‘Listen Again’ to BBC radio programmes on BBC iPlayer in RealMedia format? The BBC turned of the RealPlayer suppoert on 22 October 2009 – … officially.

On the BBC Internet blog you can read the article: Improvements to BBC Local Radio online. The blog post is from August 2009. It states that Real Streams for Local Radio have been turned off. They plan to offer AAC and Windows Media streams. But this hasn’t been implemented yet. So one can only listen to Local Radio on the Flash-based iPlayer. (Links and information via this site)

But this is not true for National Radio like BBC Radio 4 or BBC7.

The old RealStreams still exist. At least for now. (And maybe only for Non-UK-users) Old links (looking like this rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk/radio7/sat1700.ra? ) don’t work anymore.

The website offering WebbIE, the free web browser for blind people with little or no sight, complains about this step as the flash-player isn’t that accessivle. Read about it here: WebbIE: Accessible BBC iPlayer (Listen Again)

But it turns out there still is a way to get the Listen Again Real Audio Streams for Real Player. I read a blog post about a ubuntu script that’ll download the BBC Listen Again Stream, save it as wav via mplayer and convert it to a mp3 via LAME. This directed my to the website iPlayer Real Converter. If you give the website a iPlayer PID or search through the schedule, it’ll give you a link to the RealPlayer Stream.

I, for example was interested in the current episode of Doctor Who that was broadcasted on BBC7. I will post some links here, but I guess they won’t work by the time you read this, as the 7 days will be over.

From either the Overview page for Episode ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b009szrh ) or the Details page for the Episode ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00nlyg5 ) you can get to the iPlayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/console/b00nlyg5) , which will use Flash to play the episode.  Within the html of the iPlayer I couldn’t find a link the stream. Maybe I overlooked it. Maybe the Flash player is used to create a URL for the stream from the PID. The source code contains somethink like this:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/playlist/b00nlyg5 is a XML file. It contains a lot of information like the image to be used. Or what shows might be similar. But I couldn’t find the stream – URL.

But iPlayer Real Converter will help you. If you go the Schedule of BBC which is retrieved from the BBC via an XML file the old lady is offering, you get a link to http://www.iplayerconverter.co.uk/pid/b00nlyg5/stream.aspx

You can easily exchange the PID b00nlyg5 to whatever PID you have in your case.

The link I got redirected me to a file on the BCC server called: RadioBridge_intl_2300_bbc_7.ram

It contained the following link to a Real Stream “rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/bbc7coyopa/bbc7_-_saturday_2300.ra?timestamp=1257135938&pid=b00nly7h&BBC-UID=3ac234671728faa09320b837d0fb0c3d184337f196774&SSO2-UID=” [I changed the link slightly to obfuscate the UID - you can't use it anyhow because the seven days are over. (and I change the timestamp)]. But from my former experience with the BBC URLs you should be fine using “rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/bbc7coyopa/bbc7_-_saturday_2300.ra?”

You can play this link using Real Player of mPlayer. Maybe you can even use vlc.

Just a quick note:

In case you want to listen the stream on day number 8. You might be tempted to run

mplayer -dumpstream -dumpfile FileNameEpisodeOfDoctorWho.Ra rtsp://rmv8.bbc.net.uk:554/bbc7coyopa/bbc7_-_saturday_2300.ra?

which will put the file FileNameEpisodeOfDoctorWho.Ra into the current working directory. [If you want to use the full URL including the "&"s, you should be aware that Windows will think the command ends at the '&' and a new one starts at the '&'. You'll have to but '"'s around the URL in that case.] You can open this file using RealPlayer or mplayer. You can also use the more advanced command line shown on the blog post about a ubuntu script that’ll download the BBC Listen Again Stream, save it as wav via mplayer and convert it to a mp3 via LAME.

I will let you choose the bitrate for LAME and choose a good cache size and bandwidth. And you’ll get a .wav file from mplayer. The .ra file I created with my mplayer command line isn’t a wav file but a Real Audio file.  The size is about 20MB per hour.

Disclaimer: I surely don’t recommend you to save the stream. They’ll play a repeat someday. You don’t need to circumvent their 7 day constraint.

So yesterday I was suppose to sit through another consultation which I wasn’t really looking forward too. Anyway the guy didn’t show up so I got to leave early. Yesterday was a normal work day really. I mean nothing really stuck out in my memory as out of the ordinary. I got tired at about the same time. Well I did upload some new photos and two videos to my facebook accounts. I also found out one of my friends has a squiby account as well. Oh and once again I realized how awesome it is to have realplayer SP. I find something on youtube or some other source that’s a flash video. Download it to my computer and I can convert it into a format I can use. Seriously love that player. Hard to believe there was a time when I couldn’t stand it. Well it’s come a long way that’s for sure. I also seem to be suffering a tip dry spell. I can’t think of a single tip. Usually by now I’ve started on a few. I blame this on not enough sleep. Never mind I got one and it came to me. Guess I wasn’t letting my mind wonder enough. Well squiby is down….yet again. And I had two new ones I wanted to show off. So then I guess we’ll get on with the video. Today’s video is the opening from the OVA of Happy Lesson. Unlike most OVA’s this doesn’t take place after the anime or take a separate spin. This one actually takes place at the beginning and sort of in the middle of the series. It’s only 3 episodes long if you want to sit down and watch it. The actual series is 13 episodes long so all in all your just spending close to 8 hours of your time. I say close to because they aren’t actually 30 minutes. More like 28 minutes including opening and ending. Anyway the song is called C’ by Hikari Okamoto. Yes it is in Japanese so suck it up and watch it. It is a funny opening. Least I think so. Today’s tip which took me all of a couple of minutes of actually sitting down and thinking to come up with is this. Inorder to succeed you have to try. Inorder to be lazy you have to not work. Inorder to laugh you just have to read this. See y’all tomorrow. Oh and I didn’t get many views from condron.us. I blame it on the fact that yesterday was Monday and well no one is really up on Monday.

That’s right tomorrow I’m on my way to Wisconsin. It’s about time. Can’t wait to leave and head up there. I’m tired of my parents and just not being happy here. I really have this feeling I’ll find what I’m looking for. Not to mention my Ex clearly is pushing me away so clearly there is nothing for me here. Can’t stand the parents, not happy at TCU, feeling smothered here in Texas. Now I’m not planning on burning any bridges because I may come back in the future. Well I have no clue what is going to happen, but I know it will happen when it’s suppose to. I’m so excited to head up to Wisconsin. The city I’ll be in is apparently how my hometown use to be. A small town that is humble, but has a lot to offer. Now as for what I did yesterday I packed my clothes. Think my parents know I’m kinda ready to leave. Also downloaded the entire space channel 5 game off of youtube. I also converted them into mp3 files. Thanks to the new Real Player. It’s called Real Player SP. Comes with a handy converter program. I love this upgrade I must say. Also played my Pearl game and ate some pizza. Yeah I’m clearly bored and trying to pass time to get out of here. Well for once squiby is working when I first post this so here you go. It’s also that time to put in the vid. Today I’m choosing the opening for Sonic Riders. Mainly because I really want to get my butt out of here at super sonic speed. Now as for your tip of the day. When going on a plane it is never a good idea to watch a movie about snakes on a plane or crashing the day before.

In the page the list of search engines and recent bookmarks have been removed and there will be a new section of recent activities that comprise recently closed tabs and recent downloads. Another important feature is “Recommendations” but still it is in progress. Moreover, in this we can hide thumbnails and list of recent activities if we don’t want to find them. Nevertheless, unfortunately, this updated tab page is not yet ready to use but we can enable it if we have a recent Chromium build.
