Beware of very cheap imitations. Quite a few boots on the market are made of cowhide suede with sewn on sheepskin inner fleece off cuts. A little Magic on a Coke can

The Big Idea is the holy grail for us in marketing, agencies are looking for it, creatives are looking for it, planners are making it up… In all the hoopla, we’ve forgotten that real change happens through small ideas. Things that make people smile, think about the brand in a warm manner. Do them continuously for a length of time and the effect on your brand will be greater than the biggest campaign you can come out with.

I recently saw this lovely barcode interpretation on a Coke Can in Indonesia and it brought a smile to my face. Its a lovely and gentle reminder of the nostalgia behind the brand on a cold aluminum can. I tip my hat to the client who did this, even if it was adapted from some other country, at least they went through with it, shows a client who really cares about the small details of making a brand come alive. Seeing this really brought home the point that we should be focusing on creating a lot of small ideas for our clients, they’re easier to sell-in and implement and collectively have the same, if not more, impact as a single big effort.

I listened to the new Boys Like Girls album today in its entirety and I am, indeed, Love Drunk off of it.  SO GOOD.  Some catchy diddies, a good ballad with Taylor Swift, and one song about a girl from OHIO – what more do you need?

I have only one complaint.  The third track (“She’s Got A Boyfriend Now“) features this line:  “I’m 23 and invincible; got the world figured out and a bird on my shoulders“.  First of all, you have ONE bird on BOTH of your shoulders?  WHOA.  BIG bird!  Second of all, are ye scurvy mates a pack o’ pirates?  Who celebrates figuring out the world by walking around with a fucking BIRD on their shoulders?!?  It’s nonsensical … but enjoyable, nonetheless.

Despite Ashley Tisdale’s presence, I’m still satisfied.

The cull to bring the 1976/77 mix down to CD-R length was more brutal than I had anticipated. So much good music that failed to make the cut (hence all the bonus tracks)! Here then is a mix of a few fairly well-known songs, a couple of album tracks, and a handful of quite rare — and certainly not familiar — numbers. A few of these rarities are not of great sound quality; I hope the excellence of the music compensates for that.

To me the centre piece in the mix is Marlena Shaw’s Yu-Ma/Go Away Little Boy, the boy of the title being a bit of a waster whom Marlena knows she ought to get rid of — but when he nibbles her earlobes…ooooh! Shaw is treasured among the soul and jazz cognoscenti, but wider fame has sadly eluded her. Shaw’s career, which started with a performance at age 10 at the Harlem Apollo, was certainly distinguished. She was not yet out of her teens when she co-wrote the jazz classic Wade In The Water with Ramsey Lewis. Careering between jazz and soul, she fronted the Count Basie band from 1968-72, and before that came up with some soul gems, such as California Soul and Liberation Conversation (the latter features on Any Major ’60s Soul Vol. 2). By the mid-‘70s she had no recording contract. A CBS record exec heard her sing Go Away Little Boy at a nightclub, and signed her up, giving her career a new lease.

The singer with the most off-putting name in this set must be Bunny Sigler. Born Walter Sigler, the nickname refers to the timing of his birth: two days before Easter 1941. The Philadelphia native was an early collaborator with Philly Soul godfather Leon Huff. He had a couple of minor hits in the 1960s, including 1967’s Let The Good Times Roll (featured on Any Major ’60s Soul Vol. 1), and was central in the ascent of Philly Soul in the ’70s, not only as a singer but also as a writer and producer. Like Marlena Shaw, Sigler continues to perform today.

Billy Paul’s Let ‘Em In is a cover of the Wings song, but with entirely different lyrics, paying tribute to Malcolm X, Martin Luther Kind, Louis Armstrong et al. Vastly superior McCartney’s original, a truth I hold as self-evident.

Arthur Alexander occupies a rare, perhaps unique, position in music history: he had his original songs covered by the Beatles (Anna), Elvis Presley (Burnin’ Love) and the Rolling Stones (You Better Move On). More of a writer and arranger than a hitmaker, Alexander enjoyed a very brief revival in the mid-’70s. The gorgeous Sharing The Night Together, which was written by Muscle Shoals composers Ava Aldridge and Eddie Struzick, reached only #92 in the R&B charts. Typically, somebody else had greater success with it, in this case Dr Hook. Thereafter Alexander drifted out of the music industry, working as a bus driver. Just as he began making music again in 1993, he died of a heart attack. He was 53.

Bo Kirkland and Ruth Davis represent the disco influence in this mix. They were both recording independently until put together at Claridge Records, to whom both had signed. The smoothly funky You’re Gonna Get Next To Me was their only hit, reaching #12 in Britain in 1977.

The New World (not to be confused with the early’70s Australian group) were Curtis Mayfield protégés who did not seem to have recorded much more than one single. We’re Gonna Make It was the flip side of Help The Man, a funky number which can find at the I Wish You Would blog. Curtis Mayfield is represented here with a really lovely track from 1977’s Never Say You Can’t Survive album .

The Fiestas were veterans by the time their Philly soul-a-like was released. The group had enjoyed some success since starting out as an R&B group in 1959, when they had a #11 US hit with So Fine. They later also covered Arthur Alexander’s Anna. Released in 1977, Gonna Hate Myself made no chart impact at all, which is a great shame.

Oh, and about the Lou Rawls’ title: it is not me taking liberty with the Queen’s English.

Cows might not think it’s the real thing but Coca Cola is about to launch the next big thing: fizzy milk!!!

Yep– Fizzy milk!! It’s actually part of a wider Coke initiative called Project Life to develop milk-based products.

The drink, called Vio, contains skimmed milk mixed with sparking water. Mmmm are you thinking like me?! It doesn’t sound that tasty, hey?! Well, Coke knows what it’s doing! To make it more interesting, the drink is sweetened with cane sugar and comes in 4 “natural” flavours like peach mango, very berry, citrus and tropical colada!

What’s scary is that it doesn’t need to be chilled and apparently will not curdle thanks to the aluminum bottle it is in.

The best part? It apparently tastes like “a birthday party for a polar bear”!! lol

So he got me with a surprise induction on the couch during conversation, and put me under fairly quickly. He then left me with a trance trigger just for the night that he took great advantage of.

THINGS THAT HAPPENED:
Whenever I was asked a question to which the answer was “yes”, I would instead say “FUCK ME!” loudly and cheerfully. I did not know this was happening. I think I confused some people. He revealed what was going on after a while, much to my embarrassment.

He made me think I had lost my vagina. No seriously. I went around the party asking people if they’d seen my vagina, and freaking out BECAUSE OH MY GOD I LOST MY FREAKING VAGINA. Mostly people were either puzzled, or knew exactly what was going on and played along. When I approached my good friend Wendy Blackheart (who had smashed me with banana cream pie earlier in the night (don’t ask)), she announced to the whole room: “HEY EVERYONE, RIK HAS LOST HER VAGINA!” I was totally serious, my friends were utterly unhelpful, and I spazzed as soon as I was made to remember what was going on.

I was made to hypnotize my friend Magdalene. This was my first time actually hypnotizing someone else out loud, and I was super nervous. But here was the trick: everything I told her, I would do myself. It gets kind of fuzzy here, but I remember leading her through a very very basic induction; progressive relaxation, going down the staircase, etc. I then found myself waking myself up (!!) from a very very lovely trance, quite confused. Apparently I’m pretty good at it, so that’s cool! Another friend, who’s also a hypnotist, also went along with my induction, and it put him under, too! I’m super proud of myself.

He turned me into a kitty!! It was wonderful! I’ve always wanted to do this. Everyone pet me, and I apparently went after the O-Ring on my friend’s collar. Ooooh I want to do it again, it was so fun.

Magdalene then decided that she wanted a hand at hypnotizing me. So she did, and wrote something on my back. I went around asking people what it was, until it occurred to me to look in a mirror. As soon as I did, I had a very surprising, and very strong orgasm, so much so that I was basically a shaking puddle on the floor.

What a wonderful night. Now for 3! Hours! of sleep!

The wonderful and weird thing about hypnosis is how much your thoughts create your experience.

How pefect for me, then, that I think about it quite a bit.

I was under and already achingly horny. Granted, that’s not hard to do, all it takes is an induction, but he helped it along quite a bit by telling me how aroused I was getting. So there I was, eyes closed, head spinning in that lovely way I get in trance, and dripping wet. And here he set a trigger.

The New Testament teaches us that currently this world is under the rule of Satan, the “god of this world (or age),” along with his “rulers of the darkness of this world.”

What is it that rulers do? They determine by what laws and standards their realm will be governed.

Two of those standards by which the “powers that be” have determined to rule this present world are time and money. Both will apparently come to an end, in contrast to the values that God wants to convey to those who are governed by His standards, and consider their Home His eternal Kingdom, where His rules and standards are what count.

The big disadvantage – as far as we’re concerned – about God’s standards and values is that we can’t see them nor touch them. They require faith in order to be perceived, which is one of the rules He established for the members of His club, those who want to play the game according to His rules, and on His side. Some people are simply incapable of that, or at least not willing to adhere to that rule of faith. They totally and exclusively rely on the visible and tangible stuff around them.

Now it so happens that God has placed enough information in the visible things He made all around us, so that we can still perceive the fingerprints and evidence of His existence in His creation, but those who deny the existence of the invisible also refuse to acknowledge that evidence. In order to successfully convince themselves and others of their dogma of denial, they come up with concoctions of their own imagination such as the widely taught theory of Evolution, which, coincidentally, is being fed, nourished and upheld by nothing else but those same two major values that distinguish the rule and government of this present world: time and money.

According to the theory of Evolution, the one factor that makes it possible for the innumerable miracles to have happened that brought forth every species from nothing via mutation is an unfathomable amount of time: “billions of years.” And the one factor that makes millions, if not billions of people acknowledge that teaching as fact, is an unfathomable amount of money that flows into the science apparatus in order to create more “evidence” from virtually nothing: a jawbone here, and thighbone there, and lots of elaborate words and articles in National Geographic or Der Spiegel, along with the televised versions of the same for an increasingly illiterate public; and a whole new reality has been created, a mental conditioning with its own set of laws of “the survival of the fittest” that has been governing most of our globe for the past century and a half, consequently showering it with unprecedented amounts of suffering and violence.

The giant clockwork of Chronos is keeping the enslaved massed in check and dancing according to its tune: “Welcome to the Machine!”

For those who don’t feel as comfortable or at home with that construct as evidently a large part of Civilization does, there is, thankfully, an alternative. You see, time and money haven’t always been the yardstick that measures everything. There was – and still is, in the presently unseen world which envelops our physical realm – a time in which people would not have to rush through their lives chasing after paper money. In fact, some people on this planet still manage to live by that time in spite of the rat race going on around them.

God’s time, the stuff of which Eternity is made, is a different scope than the clock-ticking pace and rhythm that the slaves of Mammon dance to.

And there’s that other shred of news about this whole issue:

According to the Book of Revelation, the time we’re currently living under is going to come to an end.

Oh, and so will money, by the way, most unfortunately for some.

Like all fairy-tales, illusions, or faulty operating systems, the gospel of time and money must also come to an end.

Only the Real Thing is going to last.
