So you like Real Time Strategy games and want to find new games previously unknown to you, but poten

So you like Real Time Strategy games and want to find new games previously unknown to you, but potentially worth playing? The first thing you should do then is look for a list or index of items in the topic. But, what games are worth buying next? How will you choose from this list? The “TELL ME WHAT TO CHOOSE!” method will assist you in doing just that!

After compiling the topic list, you must now make a list of websites containing plenty information on the topic. A simple Google search can give you relevant URLs. Or you could use Technorati to find the top blogs and news sites of specified categories. To easily harvest all the URLs from Google (or URLs from text bodies) follow these steps:

Query Google for your keyword (select 10, 20, 50 or 100 results per page, depending on how many URLs you would like to analyze)

Copy the page source of the site

Paste the copied source into the Harvester

Specify harvesting preferences and harvest

Harvest

Now you have a list of websites (here the URLs I used) that can potentially provide information about the items in your topic list. What the “TELL ME WHAT TO CHOOSE!” method will do is basically check how many times each item in your topic list is found by Google within each URL in your websites list. This is what you do now to start automating advice for your decisions:

Run the Google Scraper tool

Copy the websites list and paste it into the top form. Be sure that every URL is on a separate line.

Copy the topic list and paste it in the bottom form. Be sure that every item is on a separate line and preferably between brackets (e.g. “Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos”)

De-select the “only query discrete sites” checkbox

Name your results file for archiving

Scrape Google

Now you wait till the tool is done scraping. How long it takes will depend on the size of your 2 lists. When finished, the scraping tool provides a nice overview of the amount that the items in your topic list are found within the URLs of your websites list. According to these crowd-sourced / Google-sourced results you can now finally CHOOSE!

Tagcloud real time strategy games

Tagcloud real time strategy games alphabetically

PLAY THOSE GAMES ON TOP TO SEE WHAT IS SO GREAT ABOUT THEM!
Or
PLAY THOSE GAMES IN THE BOTTOM TO FIND OUT HOW MUCH THEY REALLY SUCK!

Assassin’s Creed Renaissance

Based on the game Assassin’s Creed II, Renaissance is the story of a young man’s epic quest for vengeance – an epic story of power, revenge and conspiracy

Assassins Creed II

The game Assassin’s Creed II is the basis for the novel

They left the palazzo on foot together, arm in arm, and walked in the direction of the cathedral, to the small quarter near it where many of the artists of Florence had their workshops and studios. Some, like those of Verrocchio and the rising star Alessandro di Moriano Filipepi, who’d already acquired the nickname Botticelli, were large, busy places, where assistants and apprentices were busy grinding colours and mixing pigments, others, humbler.

It was at the door of one of these that Maria halted and knocked. It was opened immediately by a handsome, well-dressed young man, almost dandified but athletic-looking, with a shock of dark brown hair and a luxuriant beard. He might have been six or seven years older than Ezio.

‘Madonna Auditore! Welcome! I’ve been expecting you.’
‘Leonardo, buon’ giorno.’

The two exchanged formal kisses. This artist must be well in with my mother, thought Ezio, but already he liked the look of the man.

‘This is my son, Ezio,’ continued Maria.
The artist bowed. ‘Leonardo da Vinci,’ he said. ‘Molto onorato, signore.’
‘Maestro.’
‘Not quite that – yet,’ smiled Leonardo. ‘But what am I thinking of? Come in, come in! Wait here, I’ll see if my assistant can find some wine for you while I go and get your paintings.’

The studio was not large, but the clutter in it made it look even smaller than it was. Tables were heaped with the skeletons of birds and small mammals, while jars filled with colourless fluid contained organic objects of one kind or another, though Ezio was hard put to it to recognize any of them.

A broad workbench at the back held some curious structures painstakingly crafted in wood, and two easels bore unfinished paintings whose tones were darker than usual, and whose outlines were less clearly defined. Ezio and Maria made themselves comfortable, and, emerging from an inner room, a handsome youth appeared with a tray bearing wine and small cakes. He served them, smiled shyly, and withdrew.

‘Leonardo’s very talented.’
‘If you say so, Madre. I know little of art.’
‘You know, self-expression is a vital part of understanding life, and enjoying it to the full.’ She looked at him. ‘You should find an outlet yourself, my dear.’
Assassin’s Creed Renaissance

Ezio was piqued. ‘I have plenty of outlets.’
‘I meant apart from signorine,’ retorted his mother matter-of-factly.
‘Mother!’ But Maria’s only answer to that was a shrug and a pursing of her lips. ‘It would be good if you could cultivate a man like Leonardo as a friend. I think he has a promising future ahead of him.’
‘From the look of this place, I’m inclined to disagree with you.’
‘Don’t be cheeky!’

They were interrupted by Leonardo’s return from his inner room, carrying two boxes. He set one down on the ground. ‘Do you mind carrying that one?’ he asked Ezio. ‘I’d ask Agniolo, but he has to stay and guard the shop. Also, I don’t think he’s strong enough for this kind of work, poor dear.’

Ezio stooped to pick up the box, and was surprised at how heavy it was. He almost dropped it.

‘Careful!’ warned Leonardo. ‘The paintings in there are delicate, and your mother’s just paid me good money for them!’
‘Shall we go?’ said Maria. ‘I can’t wait to hang them. I’ve selected places which I hope you’ll approve of,’ she added to Leonardo. Ezio baulked at this a little: was a fledgling artist really worth such deference?

As they walked, Leonardo chatted amiably, and Ezio found that despite himself he was won over by the other man’s charm. And yet there was something about him that he instinctively found disquieting, something he couldn’t quite put his finger on. A coolness? A sense of detachment from his fellow beings? Perhaps it was just that he had his head in the clouds, like so many other artists, or so Ezio was told.

‘So, Ezio, what do you do?’ Leonardo asked him.
‘He works for his father,’ Maria replied.
‘Ah. A financier! Well, you were born in the right city for that!’
‘It’s a good city for artists too,’ said Ezio. ‘All those rich patrons.’
‘There are so many of us, though,’ grumbled Leonardo. ‘It’s hard to attract attention. That’s why I am so indebted to your mother. Mind you, she has a very discerning eye!’
‘Do you concentrate on painting?’ asked Ezio, thinking of the diversity he’d seen in the studio.

Leonardo looked thoughtful. ‘That’s a hard question. To tell the truth, I’m finding it difficult to settle down to anything, now I’m on my own. I adore painting, and I know I can do it, but . . . somehow I can see the end before I get there, and that makes it hard to finish things sometimes. I have to be pushed! But that’s not all. I often feel that my work lacks . . . I don’t know . . . purpose. Does that make any sense?’

‘You should have more faith in yourself, Leonardo,’ said Maria.
‘Thank you, but there are moments when I think I’d rather do more practical work, work that has a direct bearing on life. I want to understand life – how it works, how everything works.’
‘Then you’d have to be a hundred men in one,’ said Ezio.
‘If only I could be! I know what I want to explore: architecture, anatomy, engineering even. I don’t want to capture the world with my brush, I want to change it!’

He was so impassioned that Ezio was more impressed than irritated – the man clearly wasn’t boasting; if anything, he seemed almost tormented by the ideas that simmered within him. Next thing, thought Ezio, is that he’ll tell us he’s involved with music and poetry as well!

‘Do you want to put that down and rest for a moment, Ezio?’ Leonardo asked. ‘It might be a bit too heavy for you.’
Ezio gritted his teeth. ‘No, grazie. Anyway, we’re almost there.’
When they arrived at the Palazzo Auditore, he carried his box into the entrance hall and set it down as slowly and as carefully as his aching muscles would let him, and he was more relieved than he’d ever admit, even to himself.

‘Thank you, Ezio,’ said his mother. ‘I think we can manage very well without you now, though of course if you wish to come and help with the hanging of the pictures – ‘
‘Thank you, Mother – I think that’s a job best left to the two of you.’
Leonardo held out his hand. ‘It was very good to meet you, Ezio. I hope our paths cross again soon.’
‘Anch’io.’
‘You might just call one of the servants to give Leonardo a hand,’ Maria told him.
‘No,’ said Leonardo. ‘I prefer to take care of this myself. Imagine if someone dropped one of the boxes!’ And bending his knees, he hoisted the box Ezio had put down into the crook of his arm. ‘Shall we?’ he said to Maria.
‘This way,’ said Maria. “Goodbye, Ezio, I’ll see you at dinner this evening. Come, Leonardo.’
Ezio watched as they left the hall. This Leonardo was obviously one to respect.

Yesterday I found a treasure in the low-price-box on the super market. 6,95 EUR for a complete game?

Yesterday I found a treasure in the low-price-box on the super market. 6,95 EUR for a complete game? Lets buy it!

I found Supreme Commander, a RTS game that I played the Demo of as it came out one year ago. It features three campaigns. One for each of the three factions. Each campaign includes 6 very long missions that requier good ressource management and unit coordination. It remembered me so much on Total Annihilation from the late 90s until I found out that Chris Tailor, the lead designer for TA, made SupCom, too. It was clear for me that I am going to buy it someday until its available for a low price. This article does not feature many informations about Supreme Commander yet. Follow me back in time and take a look through my eye on SupComs predecessor:

Total Annihilation!

Back in the year 1997: A little company called Cavedog entertainment created a RTS game with the name Total Annihilation that won lot of prices (“Game of the Year” in many countries) because of its unique units and terrain in 3D and the long and intense experience inside a multiplayer match. Chris Tailor, the lead designer of the project, left Cavedog short after the games release and opened his own company. The Arm and Core fight for more than thousand years now to get the control of the most important planets and moons inside the milky way. One year later a first Exp-Pack came out: The Core Contingency and added over 75 new units and 25 new missions, that continued the story of the great war after the Arm campaign, to the game. Another Exp-Pack called Battle Tactics followed, wich includes 4 new units and over 100 new missions that were based on Commando-Missions without much base and economic construction.

Energy is power

Not only models and terrain in 3D made this game that special compared to the godfather of RTS Command and Conquer. Both armies had to collect metal and had to manage their energy. You can say that energy was the most important resource in TAs base and army construction. Everything costs energy, like in the real world. Without enough energy left the construction of units and buildings takes very long. The player had to manage a constantly changing energy in- and out-rate. The higher the in-rate of energy was, the more out-rate could be used for construction. There were many ways to get energy inside the game: Through water powered plants and wind wheels, or by converting metal into pure energy.
Especially the gathering of metal was easy on artificial moons made out of pure metal, while the player had to search for metal veins on ordinary planets. This circumstance made the not so important material become very important, because metal-veins dont spring out everywhere. You can say that TA featured a real economic system.

The name of the game

Total Annihilation is the name of the game and thats what you get inside one of the mainly over 15 hours lasting battles with your friends in multiplayer. I can remember that I played against my uncle and my best friend Ritual hours over hours in LAN-mode. We used metal moons to get a lot of metal in-rate. Beginning in the morning at 9 AM through to 9 PM at the same day. Sometimes we had to save our multiplayer match before we could continue on the next day. After the first Exp-Pack was released, the player of the Core had the chance to build one overkilling unit called Krogoth, a multiple legged Mech that could destroy complete bases in no time. We had a lot of great moments while playing both with the Core Army, sending our Krogoths into 1on1 battles. There was no unit limit inside the game. That way we could build 10.000 unit large armies that hit each other on large plateaus all over the map. A lot of destroyed vehicles were lying around the map after some time and made it impossible to continue the war. This large junkyard forced us to start converting the wrecks into new metal before we could send our troops out again for another intense war. Great times!

Supreme Comeback

Over 10 years have passed and the ex lead-designer of TA Chris Taylor got a comeback with Supreme Commander. The game uses the old technologies that was used in TA. Taylor and his new team upgraded the TA engine, allowing the player to zoom in and out a large range. From satellite view down to 3 meters above ground. The same energy and metal management is included, too. I didnt started to play Supreme Commander yet. But I cant wait to get my hands on this baby.

everything i needed to know about military strategy i learned playing RTS games
Category: Games
*Sneak attacks and tactical strikes almost always trump brute force.
*The best laid plans of mice and men are devestated by the element of suprise.
*Assume all of your troops are sunshine soldiers.
*Mercy is a waste of resources and an uneccessary liability.
*Only attack what you have to. Only defend what you have to.
*Have a backup plan.
*Have several plans unfolding at once.
*Every war is ultimately about managing resources.
*To win the war you can either kill the enemy’s entire army, kill their leader, bleed their resources, or cut off their resources. The goal is to find which of those goals takes the least amount of your resources to accomplish.
*Upgrade
*If your enemy is on a field, fight from a mountain. If your enemy is on a mountain fight from the sky. If your enemy is in the sky fight from space.
*Don’t use a bazooka to kill a fly.
*Allies are your greatest strength, but they can become your greatest threat.
*Have a diverse base defense system.
*It’s better to attack from afar than from upclose.
*The more you know about your enemy the better, the less they know about you the better.
* Fight smarter, not harder.
*He who has the most advanced technology almost always wins.
*There are different tactics need to take a position than there are to hold one.
*Play to your opponents weakness and to your own strength.
*A specialized military always has a defensive weakness. A diverse military is hard to penetrate.
*You gotta make money to spend money. You gotta spend money to make money.

“Outlandish humor, intentionally cheesy live-acting, and an “anything goes” attitude are all fine trademarks of the Command & Conquer Red Alert series, separating it from other standard real-time strategy games by a thick, barbed-wire wall of silliness. What’s not to love about sending sonic laser-equipped dolphin attack squads, giant Japanese robot mechs, pig-tailed psionic schoolgirls, and armored Soviet war bears charging into battle? Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 – Commander’s Challenge distills the core gameplay into a standalone, challenge-based expansion that’s light on plot and heavy on the difficulty.”

Just finished up a decent game against a Hard Steamroller in CNC3 (Deadly Sertao). I could have done much better, really – apparently spending loads of resources isn’t my thing, yet. Nor is unit diversity >.> (I like Juggernauts, ok?)

I’m also happy to have actually survived a few large attacks from the cpu – though why the Orca was the steamroller unit of choice will forever elude me. Either way, I won, so yay. Posted the replay here for history’s sake.

Won’t be long before I’m finally ready to compete in the online ladders. I’ve seen some of those matches, and they frighten me :|

HORUS RISING By Dan Abnett

Ahh, the infamous history of the Warhammer 40K universe. The oft hinted at time of the uprising against the Emperor, and humanity’s, greatest enemy. Finally, we have the history of the Horus Heresy. The first chapter, told by one of the Black Library’s best loved writers, Dan Abnett.

I recently rediscovered the Warhammer universes, after a fifteen-year absence. Both times I found my way to Gamesworkshop via different methods, and found my interested satiated in different ways. The first time I entered one of their shops I marvelled at the artwork and the intricately painted models. I’ve never been interested in the tabletop gaming, but the figures impressed me, and later frustrated me as I tried to create my own versions of the miniature masterpieces. The second time, only about three years ago, I came across Dawn of War, the epic real-time-strategy PC game, and its various sequels and expansion packs. The game brought all the beauty and brutality of the 40K universe to life, and drew me further in, which is when I discovered the tomes of the Black Library and the written history of the 40K universe. I’ve read a few of the books, mostly the omnibuses, Eisenhorn, Space Wolf Omnibus, and the Malus Darkblade books. Most of which are written by Abnett.

Horus Rising tells the story of Captain Garviel Loken, of the Luna Wolves. His battles across worlds, and the introduction of chaos to the innocent world of the 31st millennium. This world is much different to that of the 40K universe, without the corrupting influence of chaos, the human Imperium is a much safer place, as the Space Marines march unhaltingly across the universe destroying all who stand in their way in the name of the Emperor. The battles are with fellow humans and giant spiders, and green-skins, not crazy chaos-space marines.

The world of the 31st millennium is a much more relaxed place, the people in it far more human and venerable and real, without the dominating influence and fear produced by chaos.

The story of the Horus Heresy is huge, and this first book is just the prologue, hinting at so much more to come. It would be unfair to point out that the heresy has barely begun, despite these three hundred pages, because this really will be an epic tale, encompassing many different sections of the universe.

Horus Rising is a book that sets the standard high, it does well to set a different tone from the 40K universe, whilst maintaining a similar integrity. Abnett is on form, producing a rip-roaring war novel that begins what is likely to be the largest series the Black Library will ever produce.

And this is just the beginning…

Stalin i kilka słów historii

Wystarczy tylko przeciwstawić Temple of NOD jakiejkolwiek konstrukcji GDI, aby zrozumieć kto tutaj rządzi.. do czasu ;P

Instalujemy pluskwę w ziemi standardowo klikając i czekamy.

Disrupter przypominający Sonic Tanka, wykorzystujący falę dźwiękową do niszczenia wrogich jednostek i budynków).

Stanowi to znaczny krok do tyłu w stosunku do Red Alerta. Trudno podciągnąć pod nią amfibię i MLRS’a. Brak jednostek stricte morskich boli.

Pierwszy i drugi został wyposażony w laser. Dodanie go do jednostek GDI wyrównało szanse z NOD’em i jego kultową artylerią.

- Inwestujcie w Orca Bombery i Banshee. Możecie sobie pomóc ION Cannon’em i Multi Missile’em. 6 Orca Bomberów w zupełności wystarcza aby pomimo sam’ów dolecieć i zniszczyć centrum dowodzenia czyli CY. Po każdej strąconej jednostce buduj niezwłocznie drugą.

- Pamiętaj aby rozbudowywać cały czas flotę swoich żniwiarek i Tiberium Refinery. Na jedną powinny przypadać maksymalnie 3 żniwiarki. Czasami bardziej opłaca się wybudować nową rafinerię niż żniwiarkę, bo ceny są porównywalne, a im bliżej rafineria pola tiberium (nawet tego znacznie oddalonego) tym krótsza droga transportu i deficyt Tiberium mniejszy.

- Gdy masz taką możliwość wybetonuj bazę. To mało kosztuje, a jest skuteczne przeciwko inżynierom wroga poruszającym się podziemnymi pojazdami APC.

- Zawsze pozostaw obok głównego budynku (CY) 2-3 Tytany, aby niszczyły Devil’s Tonque i APC z inżynierami.

To chyba tyle z najważniejszych rzeczy :]

Author: Xercies

WiseAss Thinkers

Ever since the success of consoles like the Xbox and Xbox 360 with their action games like Halo and Gears of War I have noticed something changing to the Gaming Industry pretty much everywhere in the way games are advertised and play now a days. It kind of disturbs me and that change is that a lot of stuff is mostly singling on action and killing people. There is pretty much no room for slower or strategic games in this marketplace any more it seems. That saddens me.

What led me up to this thought is the recent Dragon Age trailers which are horrible in every sense; it features a horrible rock song backing made by Marilyn Manson, focuses on sex and action, and has horrible blood splatters. What makes me curious is that from hearing previews this sounds like a hardcore RPG not the action and sex crazed from the trailers, it seems hardcore RPGs can’t be advertised as they used to be you know on their hardcore RPG merits but they have to get the sex and blood guys in it because that’s the only thing that sells. But it doesn’t just stop at Dragon Age a lot of RPGs have changed to more of an Action RPG feel instead of an actual RPG feel, Bioware who used to make the Hardcore RPG series Baldurs Gate now makes the RPG lite Gun heavy Mass Effect. Obsedian another “Hardcore RPG” Maker is now making Alpha Protocol which seems to be heavy on the action. It seems RPGs as they used to be are pretty much dead and must go through to be Action games with light RPG elements.

Its not just RPGs that seem to be changing in this new action focused gaming world, real time strategy games seem to be changing as well. You would think that with the name strategy in the title of its genre it would be safe but it seems not. A few RTS games are coming out completely changing what the Genre feels like and giving it a more action and a lot of companies seem to be following; games like World and Conflict which does away with making a base and just has you sending men at the enemy and replenishing them, and Dawn of War 2 which gives you a small squad to go through various missions and kill aliens. This has made even hardcore RTS series Command and Conquer change it up and follow these guys pretty much taking the strategy away from the genres title and putting a A instead denoting Action.

Also a lot of miscellaneous things like there are definitely more First Person and third person shooters coming out instead of other genres. The trailers of games are also changing focusing on the action more then anything else, it seems you can’t advertise anything else. You must advertise action otherwise your game doesn’t get sold. I fear that this will only continue and it will get even rarer to find a game not based on shooting people. I like shooting people sometimes but I also like doing other things.

You’ll find there are many familiar activities to engage in, like erecting important buildings, hiring units, upgrading abilities, expanding your kingdom, exploring foggy maps, and defeating swarms of foes. However, there’s a catch: you can’t directly control any of your units. This was a unique and challenging concept the original game received high marks for almost a decade ago. With a facelift and a few new features, the formula still feels new and exciting in this long-awaited sequel.”

Alright, this is one of the most popular games of all time. This game is played in South Korea in fucking tournaments. That’s how hardcore it is.

Anyway, as for the gameplay, it’s very similar to WarCraft 2’s, just a lot more advanced. It’s a real time strategy game, so it has a few similarities with other RTS games, like Age of Empires. The control is easy enough, just click on a unit or building and it’ll select it. From there you can build units, issue orders, use powers, whatever. The biggest advantage this game has over earlier RTS games is that all three of the races are different, and they all have their own distinct play style. But most importantly, the races are incredibly well balanced, which is very very hard to do.

Now, the story mode is very well done, especially for an RTS, the story is pretty damn good, and it’s not too long or hard. Each of the three races gets an episode. You can choose to start with any episode you like, but the story will be out of order, so the game recommends beating the previous missions first. The first team, the Terrans, start out with a couple of tutorials, which are skippable. This should honestly be an option in any game, especially for those going through the story mode for a second or third time. But alas, many games still force a tutorial down your throat.

Another excellent feature is the included map editor. It’s simple to use and powerful enough to make a wide variety of playstyles.

It’s not the first RTS, but damn it’s a turning point for the better. I give the gameplay an 8/10.

The story is pretty damn awesome. To avoid spoilers I’ll make this as bare as possible. Basically the Terrans are at war with the alien Protoss (one of the other playable races). You take control of a small force trying to control the planet Mar Sara after a bunch of other Terran planets get attacked by the Protoss. After that, they encounter a strange alien race, later revealed to be the Zerg (the last playable race) who have taken over some of the planet. After that things spiral out of control (and into spoiler territory). It’s a good story nonetheless, especially for an RTS.

I give the story a 9/10.

Graphics are damn good. So good that they still look good today, more than 10 years since it’s release. Even the character models used for the briefings and other stuff look good. The sprites are clean and crisp, and the backgrounds are detailed and lush.

Excellent graphics that stand out even today, so I give the graphics a 10/10.

The music is pretty damn awesome, it all really fits in together with the theme and story. Unfortunately none of the music really sticks to you and it sorta just sits in the background most of the time. The sound effects are fine, everything sounds like it should. The voices are good too, no really annoying actors and it doesn’t sound forced, like someone was just reading it off a paper.

I’ll give the sound an 8/10.

Pros:
Well Balanced gameplay
Graphics
Good voice acting
Story

Cons:
Only three races
The computer AI is brutal for new players

Overall this is my second favourite RTS and is in fact only surpassed by a much lesser known game, which was released almost a year earlier. Curious? Tune in next time!

I give StarCraft a 9/10

One of my favorite things to do to decompress is play Civilization IV. It seems odd to a lot of peop

One of my favorite things to do to decompress is play Civilization IV. It seems odd to a lot of people, but I find it oddly soothing — the repetitive nature of creating something within a more or less strictly structured environment can be therapeutic when your life is about creating things within a very unstructured environment. Also, being the king of a virtual world is cool, at least for a couple hours. I’m having a hard time with the game lately, though, because as I get better at it, I realize that what I’m getting good at is simulated imperialism, and what the game does is set parameters that force you to follow-through with a development narrative that also necessitates conquest: in order to have the resources to win a diplomatic victory, you also have to be one of the strongest civilizations in the game. Racial issues aside, there are specifically design-oriented problems that I have with the game. The mechanics, the game interface, the various win conditions, all assume several things: that you will progress “forward” on a Eurocentric historical model; that you will eventually have to fight to defend your resources, or fight to gain control of someone else’s; and that you either need to be pandering and subservient to avoid your neighbors’ wrath, or you need to be militarily robust to deter their attacks. I think the second two of these assumptions follow directly from the first.

Civ IV is basically a game about resource management. How quickly can you spread your sphere of influence over the planet? How efficiently will you control the means of production? Can you defend your resources against others? Can you seize control of other players’ resources? How will you use your resources to gain further control of resources? The assumptions of gameplay in a resource-management model are that players will feel the competitive need to perform well in these categories. Of course, by posing these questions in this way, players of resource-management games (as a genre) are shoehorned into a development narrative that requires them to gain resources in order to build better technology in order to gain more resources.

Now, I don’t purport to be an expert in this arena, but I haven’t ever seen any RTS games that allow the player to develop on any paths other than a Eurocentric, linear-historical model. I’ve tried to play Civ IV in a different manner, but ultimately the arrogant demands of my neighbors force me to build up my military might. Inevitably, another civ will invade and start razing farms, sacking cities, and generally trampling on my peaceful, culturally-oriented civ. Other civs don’t like it when my cultural spheres of influence expand into their territory, which occurs when cities reach new cultural thresholds. The development of culture has a direct benefit defensively, too — as a city’s sphere of influence increases, so does the defense bonus that troops stationed there receive.

I guess it’s somewhat realistic that more powerful cultures will prod less powerful cultures into giving them what they want, and that if the less powerful don’t comply, they resort to less civilized methods of extracting those things. But in a world where relationships between the powerful and the lowly are now more complicated — especially in the age of a superpower-sponsored War on Terror, in the aftermath or crumbling final days of the world’s greatest empires — you’d think that we’d come up with another RTS model that is just as compelling and fun to play. I can’t really wage asymmetric warfare (or whatever it’s called these days) against my neighbors in Civ IV. I can’t wage warfare at all, in fact, unless I’m a legitimate state.

Maybe it’s nostalgia for the days when nation-states fielded armies that weren’t disingenuous about their militaristic intentions, or maybe it’s that adding any more complexity to the already-rich Civ IV would be ease-of-use suicide, or maybe it’s something else. I don’t think epic RTS as a genre is going to budge anytime soon, at least not on the mainstream level. For a game with the aspirations of giving the player the power to completely rewrite history, Civ IV leaves out a lot of rewriting options. I have been thinking about this for a while, but I need to work out a more detailed, coherent position, so if you have any thoughts, I’d like to hear them.

( via ohgizmo)

Relics Dawn of War 2, or DOW2 as most call it is definately a must play for all RTS (Real Time Strat

Relics Dawn of War 2, or DOW2 as most call it is definately a must play for all RTS (Real Time Strategy) lovers. Many RTS’ depend on simply the amount of units a player has, often the player with the most ammassed units would dominate. DOW2 is not only extreamly strategy based, but offers plenty of options and tactics in each and every game you play.

Outside of the single player compaign, DOW2 offers four playable classes where you can battle over the Windows Live network; battles range from head to head, two vs two, or three vs three. Much like Relics previous major RTS, Company of Heroes, DOW2 also has two game modes, annahilation and a victory point control mode. The game also bosts avery generouse four races, or classes, to play depending on your style and taste:

Tyranids – Appearing to be the antagonists of the DOW2, this team is your primitive alien race, much like whats seen in the movie Aliens, they are large in numbers but cheap to produce, what ever weapons and armor they wield, they were physically spawned with, pertruding out of their bodies.

Space Orks – Much like the Tyranids, appearing to be antagonists, the Orks are one more step up in the evolutionary food chain it seems. It looks as though they don’t wear as much armor as the Space Marines or Eldar, however the physical build of their race would explain why.

Space Marines - These guys are your human class of the game, wearing thick armor, clad with helmets, rocket launchers, and chain swords, yes, chainswords. They’re what you would expect a futuristic human army to be.

Eldar - The Eldar are the third of the alien races in DOW2, polar opposites of the Orks and Tyranids, the Eldar are a more advanced alien race. What they lack in size and power they make up in their destructive technology.

Not a chainsaw, but a chain-SWORD!

On top of these four very diverse classes, each race also gives you the choise of selecting your main character, your Hero. Somewhat consistent throughout all four races, you generally have an offensive, defesnive, and support hero to choose from. Your Hero is the most important part of your army, most often he/she/it will be leading your squads to the front lines, buffing them, or in some cases debuffing your opponents. Of course if you have a support hero, it’s important to keep an eye on his health, because if you lose him/her/it, you will need to either pay in resources to have him respawned, or if you have a teammate, they can use their hero to revive your own for no cost.

A significant bonuse to keeping your hero alive is to have him rise in level. All of your units can gain levels, giving them more health and stats, however your hero is definately priority. A higher level hero will not only let you dominate your opponents hero, but most definately roll over the enemy units with much more ease. Not to mention your opponent will be able to harrass you as much as they please if your hero is out of the picture. Apart from your units and hero leveling up you can customize each unit with items and upgrades, for example, adding a commander or luitenant, which will make that given squad more resilient to damage, and possibly one other bonus, i.e. more effective vs. vehicles. There are countless ways to go about itemizing your squads, however you will definatly have limited resources, so it’s imperative to go with the right upgrades for situations that you think you may encounter.

This is some gameplay from the single player compaign, but it lets you see the game mechanics overall.

One last note, a huge part of DOW2 is outlasting your opponent, you don’t want to retreat your squad too early. It’s a lot like a game of chicken, whoever retreats first forfeits that battle/strategic point, but on the other hand, its better to retreat than to lose a squad, especially if they’ve been upgraded, or are of high level. Overall, this is personally one of the best RTS’ that I’ve played. There is plenty of diversity both in the way you can play, as well as the factions to choose from.
