The North Oakland area of Temescal has become a yupster magnet, led by local merchants who embarked five years ago on a deliberate strategy to shed the tawdry Oakland image by fostering a neighborhood art and culinary scene.Mbts   Mbt shoe

Danielle Fox is evidence of their success. Ms. Fox, who was a student at the University of California, Berkeley, in the 1980s, said she had little reason to visit Temescal in the past because “it was part of the general Oakland grunge.” But when she sought a location to open an art gallery this April, the 43-year-old zeroed in on the corner of Telegraph Avenue and 48th Street, in the heart of the neighborhood.

“I liked that it was hip, up and coming and creative,” said Ms. Fox, who named her gallery Slate.

Over the past five years, Temescal has become Oakland’s answer to San Francisco’s Mission District and the city of Berkeley, drawing a mix of yuppies and plaid-wearing hipsters. The changing demographics and new businesses have brought results: From fiscal year 2004 to fiscal year 2008, the latest year for which data are available, Oakland’s sales-tax receipts from the Temescal area rose 18% from $294,735 to $348,917, said Keira Williams, retail specialist for the city of Oakland.

The shift is no accident: Local merchants and leaders plotted a strategy for the commercial district’s success, starting with a 2004 vote in favor of a property tax. With the tax proceeds, local merchants created a business-improvement district that has cleaned up sidewalks and brought in popular farmers markets and street fairs. And one landlord shaped the core of the commercial district by offering below-market-rate rent to businesses that would boost the whole neighborhood.

All of that has been bolstered by Temescal’s location near convenient transportation and affordable housing. Centered on Telegraph Avenue between 40th and 51st streets, Temescal is near the MacArthur BART station and Highway 24 and a short walk from the California College of the Arts. The median home price of $620,000 attracts first-time buyers. Rooms for rent cost as little as $500 a month, compared with double that in Berkeley and many parts of San Francisco.

That has enticed students such as Mars Tremor to move here despite the neighborhood’s still-rough edges. “We wanted to live in Berkeley, but rent was too expensive,” Ms. Tremor, a 28-year-old art student and teacher, said on a recent Friday night at Slate. She currently splits $945 monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment with her boyfriend.

Over wine and cheese at the gallery’s open house, Ms. Tremor ticked off the other reasons she chose to live in Temescal: Easy to walk around, fun art scene, great food. “It’s a funky, cute neighborhood,” she said.

It wasn’t always that way. Brian Brooks, who opened the Smokey’s Tangle art gallery in February, said when he moved to the area 10 years ago, it was desolate. “There was a video store and a grocery store with rotten produce,” he said, adding that drug dealing and prostitution were rampant.

Mr. Brooks and other residents said Temescal started transforming five years ago. Drawn by the location and the diversity of the neighborhood’s residents, the eateries Pizzaiolo and Bakesale Betty’s opened to form the core of what is now called the neighborhood’s “Gourmet Ghetto.”

Around the same time, the property vote tax happened. These days, a farmers market springs up every Sunday.

“The entrance into Temescal of those places…Bakesale Betty’s, Pizzaiolo, the business-improvement district, the farmer’s market—those really seemed to take Temescal to the next level,” said Ms. Williams of the city of Oakland. “I think that’s what other parts of Oakland would like to have happen in their area.”

Meanwhile, commercial-property owners such as Sarita Waite have shaped the neighborhood to their liking. The 68-year-old, a co-owner of seven Telegraph Avenue storefronts around 50th Street, said she offered below-market rent to businesses she thinks will contribute to the whole neighborhood’s success. She recently reached a deal with Scream Sorbet, which will open in a couple of months, because she felt the street needed an ice-cream shop. “I pick winners,” she said.

The neighborhood still has its lingering troubles. On a recent evening, as young couples parked their strollers outside the Lanesplitter Pub to wait for a table, a panhandler stumbled by, muttering about heroin. Residents say they must be especially wary around Lower Temescal, near 40th Street and the BART station, where empty storefronts and vacant lots dot the avenue. Mbt  Mbt shoes 

Still, business owners believe Temescal is poised to become the next Rockridge, the upscale area just a few blocks northeast. Anyway, I popped into Tower Records before Japanese class as is my wont to pick up this week’s GACKT release: RE:BORN.  The regular edition comes with 2 CDs; one is a drama CD, and the other compiles the songs from GACKT’s 4 anniversary singles + the GHOST single for a total of 13 songs.　First, the pretty pictures, then, a more in-depth review. So, I admit I was a bit mad at GACKT for pulling his “a slew of singles instead of an album” stunt.  Now that he’s released this compilation, I can forgive him a little, though I figure anyone that actually bought all the singles might be a bit ticked off if they aren’t the obsessive collector type.  Luckily, I had only bought 8 tracks from the iTunes Store, so now I can have all of them.

The drama is called REBIRTH TO RE:BORN “ZERO’S MAIL”. If you don’t understand Japanese at all, I can’t recommend making the 3800 yen investment just for it.  However, if you’re learning Japanese, I think it is an AWESOME thing to have, because get this: they talk RELATIVELY SLOWLY! I’m listening to it as I type this, and can understand a good portion of it.  I transcribed the sentence it happened to be on when I got to typing this, near the end of Track 11, to give a small sample of the level of the language used on this CD (I’m not sure about the part in gray):

日本人のリュウイチがどう手を尽くしたって、そんなことはできなかった。俺を出迎えたのは、アルカイスト技術大佐とあればいえるはかせて。

Of course, there are also much easier parts, stuff like 「死なないで！」、「あなたを忘れはしない」and, well, non-word things like crying and gasping.  I’d never listened to a drama CD before, and radio dramas were a little before my time, so I was dubious about how enjoyable it would be, but it’s actually pretty good! Besides the acting and sound effects, there’s music, both new music and previous GACKT songs, including at least one from outside the Requiem et Reminiscence arc (“Saikai~Story~”).  It’s kinda funny for me to hear them yelling out “Maria! Maria!” because I can’t help but think of novelas. ^o^ (Oh Lawrd if GACKT acted in a novela! ROTFL!)

The liner notes, while obviously not the comprehensive telling of the world of ЯR that went with the DEARS version of RE:BORN, does give some details into the story.  There’s a page of short profiles of the main characters.  At first I was a little WTF?! over the German, but I think I got it. (“Ein voller Name” is some sort of name, and I’m guessing “heimatstadt” means “home country” or “home state.” Any of you random readers know German?)  There’s also a page with a timeline of the story, starting in July of 1913 and ending in April 1945.  The rest of the liner notes are taken up by the lyrics.  There are only two photos inside.

The only other thing is the 13 songs, but since those have all been out for a while, I don’t think I really need to say much about them.  I think this is a good album to have if you’re a big GACKT fan and you didn’t already buy all of the singles.  I think if I had already bought all of the songs, I wouldn’t have bought RE:BORN.  Sure, the drama CD’s nice, but…I’m not gonna listen to it over and over like the songs, nor do the drama in karaoke.  (Wouldn’t that be funny though?! ^o^)

EDIT: There are some small differences between the tracks as presented on RE:BORN and those in the single releases that were put on sale in the U.S. iTunes Music Store. It could be that these versions had already been released in some other version of these singles.  So, I will talk about the differences between the RE:BORN versions and the iTMS single versions.

Some tracks are a few seconds longer, with different intros and outros, on either of the releases.  For example, the single version of “BLUE LAGOONー深海ー” has a 10 second intro of beeps and chirps before the guitars come in, whereas the version on RE:BORN starts straight off with the guitars.  I assume that all the songs marked with “-ЯRII-” on RE:BORN are different from their single versions; I assume the RE:BORN versions are the way these songs were performed in concert.  While I can’t confirm it for all songs marked thus, the difference between the single and RE:BORN version of “JESUS” isn’t that big; the ЯRII version has a 30 second outro of various guitar and drum nuttiness. The difference is quite noticeable, however, on “FLOWER”: the ЯRII version on RE:BORN has a 50 second intro the single version does not, consisting mostly of GACKT doing a voice-over, so to speak.  [End of EDIT]

Anyway, I hope this review has been helpful. I’d like to end on the same note GACKT ends the drama.  It’s not a spoiler for the story, but I thought it wrapped up all the shooting I just heard pretty nicely:

Reborn!, known in Japan as Katekyō Hitman Reborn!
(家庭教師ヒットマンREBORN!, Katekyō Hittoman Ribōn!?, “Katekyō” being a portmanteau of
Katei Kyōshi and translated as Home Tutor), is an ongoing Japanese manga written
and illustrated by Akira Amano. The plot revolves around the life of a young boy
named Tsunayoshi Sawada, who finds out that he is the next in line to become the
boss of the most powerful Mafia organization, the Vongola Family. As such, the
Vongola’s most powerful hitman, a gun-toting infant named Reborn, is sent to
tutor “Tsuna” on how to become a respectable boss.

The individual manga chapters are serialized in Japan in Weekly Shōnen Jump. The
individual chapters are collected and published in tankōbon volumes by Shueisha,
with twenty-six volumes released as of October 2, 2009. Viz Media licensed the
series for an English language release in North America, shortening the series
name to Reborn!. An anime adaptation of the series premiered in Japan on October
7, 2006 and it is still ongoing. It is developed by Artland and is airing on the
television network TV Tokyo. Various video games based on the series have been
developed, with several of them being for the Nintendo DS. Additionally, Hideaki
Koyasu has authored two Reborn! light novels.

Reborn! has become one of the best-selling Weekly Shōnen Jump manga with several
of its volumes becoming top-sellers in Japan. Reviewers from the series praised
its use of comedy as well as the designs used for the infants characters. They
also mentioned that though it has become more violent since volume 8, it has
turned into a better shōnen series, praising the storylines and the fights.

Plot

The Reborn! story revolves around a boy named Tsunayoshi “Tsuna” Sawada, who
is chosen to become the Vongola Family’s boss due to him being the
great-great-great grandson of the first Vongola boss, who had moved to Japan
from Italy during his time. Also, the other candidates for the position of the
head of the Vongola Family died. For these reasons, Tsuna is the only remaining
heir. As such, Timoteo a.k.a. “Vongola IX”, the current head of the family,
sends Reborn, an infant hitman from Italy, to train Tsuna. Tsuna then
unwillingly undergoes training from Reborn. Reborn’s main method of teaching
Tsuna is the “Dying Will Bullet”, which will make the person be “reborn” with a
stronger self intent on fulfilling his dying will. Through his experiences,
Tsuna unconsciously becomes stronger and more confident, which ultimately makes
him better suited as the Vongola Family’s boss despite continuing to reject his
Mafia inheritance. He also starts making several friendships such as his crush
Kyoko Sasagawa.

Tsuna goes through many predicaments in his progress of becoming the Vongola
boss including fighting against escaped Mafia convicts posing as Kokuyo Junior
High students. Later, The Varia, Vongola assassin squad, claim the right for
their boss, Xanxus to be the true Vongola boss, and start a competition to
decide it. To defeat the Varia, Reborn recruits most of Tsuna’s schoolmates to
become the Vongola guardians: Hayato Gokudera, a dynamite expert who wishes to
be his right-hand man, Takeshi Yamamoto, a baseball player who thinks the Mafia
is a game, Ryohei Sasagawa, the energetic captain of the school boxing club, and
Kyoya Hibari, the deadly head prefect. Lambo, a weak infant assassin who came to
kill Reborn, and Chrome Dokuro, a girl who has a mental and physical link with
the criminal Mukuro Rokudo, joins them as well. Later, after defeating the
Varia, Tsuna and his friends are transported to the future where they must face
the Millefiore Family, who are annihilating the Vongola.

Early versions of the series were published in seinen manga magazines, Reborn!
first appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump as a one-shot chapter in late 2003. The
success of this chapter led Weekly Shōnen Jump to begin serializing Reborn! in
mid-2004.[7] The author Akira Amano has referred to the series and its
characters as weird and mentioned that they changed the style of the manga in
volume eight, but it would keep showing its weird style. When the serialization
became 2 years long, Amano was satisfied with the length of the series and
commented she wanted to continue writing the manga.

Media

Manga

Written and drawn by Akira Amano, the Reborn! manga has
been serialized in Japan’s Weekly Shōnen Jump since April 4, 2004 and it is
still ongoing. The individual chapters are also published in collected volumes
by Shueisha, with the first volume having been released on October 4, 2004, and
as of October 2, 2009, twenty-six volumes have been released. The series has
been licensed for an English language release in North America by Viz Media. Viz
serializes the chapters in their monthly manga anthology Shōnen Jump Advanced
and has also released them in volumes. The first volume was released on October
3, 2006 and as of April 7, 2009, ten volumes have been released. Reborn! is also
licensed in German by Tokyopop, and in French by Glénat.

An official character book titled Katekyō Hitman Reborn! Official Character Book
Vongola 77 was released on October 4, 2007 in Japan. It is based on the manga
and covers the 77 incidents that happened since Reborn arrived at the Sawada
household. The book also reveals profiles of major characters including
birthdays and favorites. Short side stories not shown in the manga are also
included, along with free color posters drawn by Amano.

Anime

The series has been adapted into an anime series, and is
produced by Artland and directed by Kenichi Imaizumi. It first aired on October
7, 2006 on the Japanese network TV Tokyo. Though the anime series has not been
licensed for distribution outside of Japan, Funimation, on behalf of Japan’s
d-rights production company, exercised a power of attorney to remove fansubbed
episodes of the Reborn! anime from the internet. Thus, to prevent copyright
infringement, cease and desist notices were sent to fansub groups who were
subtitling the series. On March 21, 2009, the anime-streaming website called
Crunchyroll began streaming subbed episodes of the Japanese-dubbed series in
North America. New episodes are available within an hour after its airing in
Japan.

As of May 29, 2009, a total of twenty-seven DVD volumes have been released in
Japan by Pony Canyon. The DVDs have secondary volume titles: the first eight
volumes are “Bullets” which contains the first thirty-three episodes; the next
eight are “Battles”, and contains episodes 34 to 65; volumes seventeen and
eighteen are “Daily Chapters”, containing episodes 66 to 73; the next seven are
the “Burn” volumes and contains episodes 74 to 101; and starting from volume 26,
they are referred to as the “X.Burn” volumes. A DVD box containing the Bullet
episodes was published in Japan on June 17, 2009.

CDs

All of the Reborn! music was composed by Toshihiko
Sahashi. Each theme music has been released into a single or album by their
corresponding performers. Three Reborn! OSTs (Original Soundtracks) have been
released; the first soundtrack, Katekyō Hitman Reborn! Target 1 OST, was
released in Japan on December 20, 2006; the second, Katekyō Hitman Reborn!
Target 2 OST, was released in Japan on April 18, 2007. The third soundtrack was
released on August 20, 2008. It includes two CDs that include songs used from
episode 78 onwards in the anime. Most of the Japanese voice actors of the series
have performed a song; all of them were gathered in a CD called Katekyo Hitman
Reborn! Character Soshutsuen Album Bongorefamiry Sotojo – Shinukidekatare!
Soshiteutae!, which contains ten tracks. On August 20, 2008, Pony Canyon
released Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Opening & Ending Themes, which contains the
first three opening themes and the first six ending themes. Additionally, there
have been various CDs that include songs performed by various characters such
the Varia or Hayato Gokudera along with Takeshi Yamamoto.

Video games

Besides characters from the series making special appearances in Jump Super
Stars and Jump Ultimate Stars for the Nintendo DS, there are six video games
based solely on the series. The first one released was Katekyo Hitman Reborn! DS
– Shinuki Max! Vongola Carnival!! on June 28, 2008 for the Nintendo DS. and
three fighting games titled Katekyo Hitman Reborn Flame Rumble were subsequently
released on the Nintendo DS With the latest game in the Flame Rumble series
being released in July 2009. Katekyo Hitman Reborn DS: Fate of Heat, an
adventure fighting game, was released for the Nintendo DS.

A PlayStation 2 game titled Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Dream Hyper Battle! was
released on August 30, 2007, and the same game was released on the Wii on
January 10, 2008. In contrast to the PlayStation 2 version, the one from Wii
added characters from the fight between the Vongola and the Varia. Katekyo
Hitman Reborn! Kindan no Yami no Delta for the Wii and PS2 was also released in
Japan on November 20, 2008. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! Nerae was released for the
PlayStation 2 on August 28, 2008, but unlike the other games it was from the
adventure genre. Another Nintendo DS game entitled Hitman Reborn! DS : Mafia
Daishūgō Vongola Festival! was released on December 4, 2008. On July 23, 2009,
Katekyo Hitman Reborn! DS Flame Rumble X will be released for the DS. Also there
were two releases for the PlayStation Portable, the names of the titles are:
Katekyo Hitman Reborn!: Battle Arena and the newly released, Katekyo Hitman
Reborn!: Battle Arena 2 – Spirit Burst. Both titles are side-scrolling arcade
style fighting games that take place before and during the 10 Year arc.

Radio

Starting from September 10, 2007, after the recording of the episode for the
following week, there is a radio show called ReboRaji! Bucchake Ring Tournament
(リボラジ!〜ぶっちゃけリング争奪戦〜, riboraji! ~bucchake ringu sōdatsusen~). The hosts for the
radio are Hidekazu Ichinose (the voice for Hayato Gokudera), Suguru Inoue (the
voice for Takeshi Yamamoto), and Rika Ishibashi (as the assistant). The show has
brought in guests starting from the tenth episode. It has also hosted live
audiences for the show during the Christmas break in ‘07, and also a couple of
episodes near the end in Osaka, Nagoya, and Tokyo. The last episode of ~Bucchake
Ring Tournament~ was aired on June 30, 2008. However, they restarted the radio
show on July 21, 2008.

The current radio show name is ReboRaji! Bucchake Namimori Dong Dong (リボラジ!ぶっちゃけ
並盛Dong☆Dong, riboraji! bucchake namimori Ding☆Dong). The hosts are Hidekazu
Ichinose, Suguru Inoue, and Toshinobu Iida (the voice for Mukuro Rokudo).

Light novels

So far, three Reborn! light novels have been released by Shueisha. Written by
Hideaki Koyasu and illustrated by Akira Amano, the novels were originally
serialized in Jump Square. The first one, Hidden Bullet 1: Mukuro’s Illusions
(隠し弾1 骸·幻想, Kakushi dan 1 Mukuro·Gensō), shows how the character Mukuro Rokudo
took over Kokuyo High, and it was released on March 12, 2007. The second one,
Hidden Bullet 2: X-Fiamma (隠し弾2 X-炎, Kakushi dan 2 X-en), which recaps the
mystery of Xanxus, was released on February 4, 2008. A third light novel, Hidden
Bullet 3: Millefiore Panic (隠し弾3　ミルフィオーレ・パニック , Kakushi dan 3 Mirufiōre・panikku)
was published on July 3, 2009. It is focused on the Millefiore Family as well as
various members of the Vongola Family.

Reception

The Reborn manga has been highly popular in Japan, with
the series having ranked as the tenth best seller of the Weekly Shōnen Jump
magazine as of 2007, a total of 7 million copies sold. During 2008, it increased
to 15 million copies. During its second release week, the twentieth volume of
the manga ranked as the third best seller comic in Japan. In 2008, the manga
sold 3.3 million copies in Japan, becoming 4th best seller series from the
country in 2008. In the first half of 2009, Reborn! ranked as the seventh
best-selling manga in Japan, having sold over 2 million volumes. Volume 23
ranked fifteenth with 598,192 copies, and it was followed by volume 24 at the
twentieth spot, which sold 554,920 copies. Additionally, the second light novel
from the series became the third best selling light novel in Japan during 2008,
having sold 106,229 copies. The DVDs from the anime have also been popular in
Japan, sometimes appearing in the Japanese Animation DVD Ranking. The DVD box
from the first season sold all its weekly copies during the week of its release.

Various publications from different types of media have commented on Reborn!.
Carlos Santos from Anime News Network noted the first volume from the manga to
have several episodic chapters in which the plot does not go to the important
parts of the series and that the art was “downright messy and crowded”, but
noted the “volatile chemistry” between Tsuna and Reborn to be very likely.
Popcultureshock.com noted the series to be aimed for girls due to the large
number of male characters appearing in the chapters and mentioned the series has
a good combination of artwork and humor, making jokes repeated gags very funny.
A. E. Sparrow from IGN praised the artwork from the manga due to the “cartoonish
characters exist alongside chiseled, well-sculpted figures” and liked how it
jokes with the “Mafia concept” since most of it is comedy. In another review,
Sparrow noted the series “is quickly becoming a great shōnen read in no small
part due to this current storyline” and noted the manga evolved since the
character start to grow up and the fights became more violent. Comicbookbin.com
mentions that though they liked that the fights were well made and the comedy
was still in the series, volume 8 of the manga becomes too violent and that its
common reader may find it strange. The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper has noted
Reborn! to have one of the highest number of cosplayers in Japan.

*Siiiiiiiiigh~* Well add this to a long list of painfully tiresome days, well, math teacher came back today, apparently i’m doing science first… starting Monday, why not Friday? no freakin’ clue… I will prolly miss tomorrow’s class since she wont start till Monday, waste of my time.

ANYWAYS, civics was easy as always, I finished earlier so I went to the library and posted my “FML” post, yeah… pants seemed to be fine on the way home, shame my AAA batteries are all dead, bah… anywho second period was living and working with children, had a few laughs, a girl who sits at my table finally came back since the first week, we ended up hanging out at lunch, cam back to school went to my credit recovery/science/math figures a girl in my living and working with children course is in there, I never talked to her till today, and her friend is in this class and they seem pretty cool.

So I get home around 4-ish? and read the latest chapters of manga out currently, and thus far remains to be One Piece and Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (which has been amazing.) One Piece has been pretty good, it’s a HUGE pirate Vs. Navy fight going on because of Luffy’s brother Ace being set for his execution so far thats pretty much it, a huge cluster of characters new and old battling it out to save Ace.

A brief summary of Reborn! Reborn! is the story of a hapless boy named Tsuna who skips class, is miserable at every subject and sport and doesn’t excel at anything, till one day his mother calls a tutor, it turns out to be a baby in a suit. When Tsuna’s mother leaves the room, Tsuna finds out that baby Reborn is an elite Italian Mafia assassin from the Vongola family, Tsuna is also set to inherit the 9th’s position as the 10th generation leader of Vongola mafia. The story is about a boy who is good at nothing who has to learn to fight, get over his fears and insecurities and gain a family, which includes Gokudera, who fights with dynamite who declairs himself to be Tsuna’s right hand man, Yamamoto Takeshi an allround good guy who has Tsuna’s best interests, captain of his schools baseball team and Gokudera’s Rival, those being JUST two of the 7+ group he has now, including the tutor assassin Reborn!

Currently in this arc, Tsuna and friends have been sent to the future and are battling it out to save their pasts from Byakuran, who has control over every alternate universe and knows all outcomes except one, and this sliver of chance is all the Vongola family’s got to make it out alive.

Well, thats about all for today ladies and gents, tomorrow expect some Total Non Stop Action, more ever so interesting days of my and the end to this weeks Manga review!

BRUSSELS – With a caretaker holding his hand, a Belgian man who was diagnosed as comatose for 23 years typed out a message Tuesday that he felt reborn after decades of loneliness and frustration. A leading bioethicist, however, expressed skepticism that the man was truly communicating on his own.

Car-crash victim Rom Houben was diagnosed as being in a vegetative state but appears to have been conscious the whole time, doctors here said. An expert using a specialized type of brain scan that was not available in the 1980s says he finally realized Houben was conscious and provided him with the equipment to communicate.

Assisted by a speech therapist who rapidly moved his finger letter by letter along a touch-screen keyboard, Houben told AP Television News that years of being unable to move or communicate left him feeling “alone, lonely, frustrated, but also blessed with my family.”

The therapist, Linda Wouters, told APTN that she can feel Houben guiding her hand with gentle pressure from his fingers, and that she feels him objecting when she moves his hand toward an incorrect letter.

“It was especially frustrating when my family needed me. I could not share in their sorrow. We could not give each other support,” Houben wrote during the interview at the ‘t Weyerke institute in eastern Belgium.

“Just imagine. You hear, see, feel and think but no one can see that. You undergo things. You cannot participate in life.”

Arthur Caplan, a bioethics professor at the University of Pennsylvania, said he is skeptical of Houben’s ability to communicate after seeing video of his hand being moved along the keyboard.

“That’s called ‘facilitated communication,’” Caplan said. “That is ouija board stuff. It’s been discredited time and time again. When people look at it, it’s usually the person doing the pointing who’s doing the messages, not the person they claim they are helping.”

Caplan also said the statements Houben allegedly made with the computer seem unnatural for someone with such a profound injury and an inability to communicate for decades.

Asked how he felt when his consciousness was discovered, Houben responded through the aide that: “I especially felt relief. Finally be able to show that I was indeed there.”

“Just like with a baby, it happens with a lot of stumbling,” he wrote.

The doctor who discovered that Houben had been wrongly diagnosed said that he is re-examining dozens of other cases.

Dr. Steven Laureys said he has discovered some degree of consciousness using state-of-the-art equipment in other patients but won’t say how many. He looks at about 50 cases from around the world a year but none are as extreme as that of Rom Houben, who was fully conscious inside a paralyzed body. Many center on the fine distinction between a vegetative state and minimal consciousness.

He said Tuesday that: “It is very difficult to tell the difference.”

His studies showed that some 40 percent of patients with consciousness disorders are wrongly given a diagnosis of a vegetative state.

“It is clearly unacceptable. It is four times out of ten that they think the patient is in a vegetative state but in reality he is minimally conscious,” Laureys said.

Patients from Europe and around the world brought to his center in Liege for a second opinion go through and PET scans, MRI’s and a battery of other tests during a weeklong reassessment.

“Sometimes patients fly in and there is all this hope. But after the tests we have to confirm they are the opposite case from Rom and that there is no error,” Laureys said. “But that too helps the family accept reality.”

In Belgium alone there are some 350 patients diagnosed as in a vegetative state, he said.

As a Christian, shouldn’t we be truth seekers? Why are we walking around with our blinders on?

We pride ourselves in Jesus Christ, and if He is the truth, why are we allowing life, friends, media, any influences to blurr our vision? When did we decide we didn’t want to know any more?

The world is filled with grey areas my friend, but what is grey really? Not black (darkness) and not white (the light). So, who do you think joys in this grey? Chatting with a friend earlier today on this very topic, the lover of grey is, satan himself.

It is in the grey that he can convince a Christian that he’s not wrong, but the area he is playing in is neutral, that he’s safe.

What has happened to our leaders, where are our warriors, who wears his helmet and sword these days? “Take on the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of G-d.”

 I’ll tell you where our Christians are, they’re watching soaps, they’re following American Idol, their cares are of this world! My goal here is not to bring condemnation or judgment, my point is simply that our Church is asleep.

Wake up, Wake up! The day is upon us and they continue to slumber.

Revelation 3:3 “…but if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you”. Why would anyone want to be like a Christian, may I ask? The truth is there is little difference today between the heathen and the Christian.

Do you know what Ghandi said? “I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians”.

Ouch! Does that hit anyone to the core? Isn’t our mission to share the word, the love, the saving grace of Jesus? And yet, even non-believers revere our Lord and reject us. Tell me this is not a crime, that this is not a great indicator of our spiritual status?

Oh, but I am saved claims the Christian, when the rapture comes, I am saved. Are you?

Do you know truly that you would be taken up with our Lord or are you hoping as you live in sin? Let’s see what our Lord says on this, shall we?

Revelation 3:15-16 “I know your works, you are neither cold nor hot…because you are lukewarm…I will spit you out of my Mouth” (other versions say vomit). So, our Lord will vomit us, regergetate us, spit us out, because we could not, or rather willed not to be on fire for Him. He even mentions our works, so in that we were doing good things, but that was not enough, because our hearts were not seeking Him. Remember it is not our works that save us!

 If this is not convicting enough, how about the fact that many will call on His name and He will say He never knew us?

Matthew 7:21-23, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name, And I will declare to them, I never knew you, depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness”.

 He is obviously speaking to believers here, those that prophesied, those that cast out demons, but their hearts, their lives were not in parallel to His commands for our lives.

We all have issues and sins that we like to hold on to, we hide them in the depths of our souls, but our Lord knows every thought, every sin, every lying tongue. If you really want to see joy in your life, if you are tired of the depression, the stress, the mess you’ve made of your life, why not just give it to G-d? Why not, commit to Him your life, to give Him hold and control? Dont’ you think that He, being G-d could do much better a job, then you?

If you’re tired of running away, all it takes is a prayer asking forgiveness. Search your heart, there are even lies that you have told yourself, that you may be unaware of, give it all to Him, redeem yourself in Him. Do you know how to do this, it is simple, you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, you ask forgiveness of your sins and you flee those sins, you don’t return to them, you decide to change and in His strength you will be able to do anything.

 Many Christians believe after you pray the sinner’s prayer you’re saved, and heaven bound. Yes!  You are saved,  but it is obeying our Father, seeking His ways for our lives, asking His guidance that brings the change we are searching for.  A true relationship with Him!

 G-d gave everyone of us desires, hopes, dreams! I urge you friends to make a vow to give your life to Him and continue to seek to be like Him, to live your life searching for Him, and when you do, you will find Him and with Him, joy and so many blessings in your life! Well, as a Christian, a believer in Jesus Christ, a saved individual from my sins, why wouldn’t I want to know the truth on the issues?

Well, this is where we start!  Stepping out of the grey and seeking to be like Him!  Join me, it’s sure to be an adventure!

Akira Amano – Viz – 2009 – 26+ volumes

Of all the shounen series I’ve been picking up midway lately, Reborn is the one I like least.  To be fair, that’s because the last few volumes have all taken place in the middle of a long tournament, which has another volume or two left in it at least.  While there has been character development, I haven’t really seen those characters in the context of the plot at all, nor have I really seen the plot or regular storyline at all, so… yeah.  That’s probably why.  I mean, I have seen shounen fighting tournaments before, so this is nothing new.

The swordfight from last volume finishes up here, though it goes on quite a bit longer than I would have expected.  The one nice thing about this tournament is that the outcomes aren’t predetermined, so there’s a good chance that the good guys will lose.  A couple already have.  I like having that wildcard, it helps get me through otherwise unremarkable swordfights.

The second fight, the Mist Guardian battle, was much more interesting.  There was a big mystery surrounding who would represent the Vongola side of the battle, and there was a pretty big to-do around unveiling the character.  I take it this person has appeared before, but I didn’t know who it was.  I liked that there was a little it of a fake-out regarding this too, and I think I would have gotten an even bigger kick out of it if I had known who the character was.

The important thing is that this fight is done by conjuring illusions.  The illusion can be anything you want.  They won’t damage your opponent unless they believe whatever is going on is real, so the more realistic illusionist wins.  It’s an interesting concept, and I enjoyed what I saw of the battle here.  It, of course, carries over into the next volume.

The story was discussing the arcobaleno babies a bit more here, too.  I like that… element of the story, and it did make me look up the series and read what their deal was, which pleased me even more.

But yeah.  So far Reborn has not knocked my socks off.  While I am nowhere near hooked or even vaguely interested, I do want to see more of the Mist Guardian battle.  That was pretty cool.
