Evidently this scene was controversial to some people, Matsumaru is clearly within the "1/2 + 7

Evidently this scene was controversial to some people, Matsumaru is clearly within the "1/2 + 7" rule. Oh, it was something else wasn't it?

Fortunately, I never said anything about these posts being in any sort of chronological order. Yesterday’s post aside, the next 38 of these are in random order culminating with the current season on New Year’s Eve. The second post marks the beginning of the second half of the decade. While there are signs here of what was to come in what got green-lighted, my tendency to miss quality while dropping everything in sight probably began about this time.

I’m going to get this little recollection going with Itsudatte My Santa, a 2-part OVA released in December 2005, but for the sake of continuity I’m including it with this season. While it served as my own personal introduction to Hirano Aya, I didn’t realize it until a couple of years after the fact. Perhaps I wanted to purge this from my memory after all. The 2 parts can pretty much be considered the same story, but set at different times of the year (1 on Christmas Eve, 2 in the middle of summer) and there are a couple extra characters in the 2nd episode. That said, it would probably have been better if this hadn’t been made, but what do I know?

Also starting before the new year was the School Rumble OVA, which doesn’t really do much plotwise, but serves more as a time filler between the 2 seasons. The first is a pretty standard onsen episode with the second set in prehistoric times with relationships staying the same. Apart from maybe the non-verbal interaction between Harima and Eri in the first episode, there isn’t that much that stands out for me.

In the TV realm there was Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, which had the advantage of being a mere six episodes long. It also had a desperate feel for a love story involving hepatitis and heart conditions which doesn’t come off as a cliche as much as a last gasp trip to Australia would.

REC gave me a little preview of the rage that comes with having an “impure” female lead. I didn’t have a problem with it, but some others did. Though perhaps in a couple of ways it reminds me too much of parts of my own life…save the interesting events and trips…and the seiyuu girlfriend.

Plot Highlights From Shows Unseen

Magikano does the old suppressed-male-lead-surrounded-by-women-who-use-magic angle and likely does it about as well as I use hyphens. Amaenaide yo!! Katsu!! is the followup to a wildly unsuccessful Buddist-themed harem series. Kage kara Mamoru! features wish fulfillment through its generally lazy, but part-time ninja lead character. Ergo Proxy is that seemingly rare example of post-apocalyptic anime done right, though it seems to be completely impenetrable for lots of people.

Now I think I may be forgetting one more important one…ok, there’s Fate/stay Night as well. However, I’m not going to say anything on Type Moon stuff without seeing it first.

"Sam, that guy's not aware enough of Avatar, go shove a making-of in his face!" I book

"Sam, that guy's not aware enough of Avatar, go shove a making-of in his face!"

I booked my tickets to go and see Avatar at the IMAX the day they went on sale (still a couple of hours too late to get there before other, more dedicated geeks got there and sold out the first four days). I’ve been looking forward to this film since Big Jim announced that he was gonna stop pissing around with the Titanic and start making narrative fiction again, years ago now. I don’t need to go into why it’s a big deal, everyone knows Avatar is sci-fi and that JC is particularly awesome at making sci-fi.

In the years between it being announced and now, there’s been almost a total lack of information on the film beyond explaining how the avatar concept applies to the story, and that there are big blue aliens in it (and also that it’s in 3D, but it’s James Cameron, it’s a given at this point). It’s been frustrating, but in the long run beneficial, because when I get there the film will feel almost completely fresh to me and my eyes.

That is if the sudden fucking media blitz doesn’t claim me as one of it’s countless victims.

I know, advertising campaigns are part and parcel of any big movie’s release, so I don’t have a leg to stand on if I’m gonna start complaining about this particular campaign but nuts to it, shoot me down if you have to. In the past couple of weeks, Avatar has constantly been making it’s presence known on the web, with still releases, character bios, viral tie-in sites (apparently they drink Coke Zero on Pandora), numerous featurettes on the upcoming game (I don’t give a shit how closely you worked with Jim, the man makes films, not games, and the one you’re making looks terrible), a phone advert (beyond having an Avatar picture on the screen I don’t see the connection), and somewhere there’s a 60 minute making of the actual film. SIXTY MINUTES! Yes, most of that is gonna be interviews and behind the scenes blah blah, but I still feel like it’s too much exposure to the story that’s going to be told in less than a month.

It’s not just restricted to bigger films either, smaller films with comparatively small advertising budgets can ruin themselves with just a trailer – take [REC] for example, it was the trailer that sold me, that made me seek it out (it’s really hard to find a Spanish film without at least an American distributor), but trailers like that, ones that stick in your head and make you want to see a film, also serve as a checklist of things you know you’re going to see in the film – which left me pissed off when I realised I’d already seen the end of the film in a two and a half minute promotional piece! Fire the guy who cut that trailer!

I’ve so far done a good job of avoiding all of this Avatar media since the second trailer, but I know from previous experience that it’s quite easy to get so swept up by the hype machine that sometimes you eventually allow yourself to become a huge glutton and consume every piece of media you can find. Well, I do anyway.

I guess for the next month or so I’ll just stick my head in the sand.

sowasred2012 / Nov 23rd

—————————————————————————————————————————————————-

I don’t know or really want to know anything about Avatar, and haven’t heard a thing about it. Maybe stop visiting nerd sites. Nerd.

All I know is that when James Cameron was a boy, he put a mouse in a plastic bottle and lobbed it over Niagra Falls. Then 40 years later he made The Abyss and got done by an animal rights group for drowning rats.

Also, you dick, if you wanna remain unbombarded, don’t follow it on Twitter!

NERDS!

————————————————————————————————————————————————

Stupid animal rights groups. Anyone can see he wasn’t drowning rats, he was just putting them in liquid that they could breathe in. It’s not his fault if the rats couldn’t handle it. Make rats that aren’t pussies and then we’ll talk.

Following it on Twitter isn’t all that bad, I follow enough people that most of their tweets get lost in the ether before I’ve had a chance to check Twitter. Plus 140 characters is usually only enough to convey something shit like: ‘Leona Lewis really hopes her song will do well’.

Also, dude, this is a nerd site. Don’t be knocking your spiritual cousins.

Adios!

I KNOW. I know. I’m so late. I’m the White freakin’ Rabbit.

Angela Vidal is a Spanish reporter. She and her cameraman Pablo work for a show called While You Sleep, which in addition to being the motto of the United Federation of Stalkers is a show that highlights the lives and times of people with night-time careers. I’m sure the previous shows of While You Sleep are scintillating viewing.

Angela and Pablo are assigned to cover a firehouse. They manage to muck around, interview some people and have some nice scenes of Angela freaking out about her hair, her makeup, her interview subjects.

When a call comes in, Angela and Pablo gladly hop a ride with the firefighters since the firehouse is so dreadfully dull everyone in there seems to be contemplating huffing some fire retardant just to have something to do. They arrive on scene to find an elderly woman in her apartment. They think she’s ill but really, she’s more in the realm of “totally fucking demented thanks to some zombifying virus”. The elderly lady takes a chunk out of a policeman’s neck, attacks one of the firefighters and throws him over the balcony into the lobby below.

It’s not long before Spain’s version of the CDC shows up to lock shit down tighter than Fort Knox. Inside, the residents and various first responders begin to panic. Their only thoughts are of – what else – escape. These thoughts only become more frenzied as the residents who have been attacked become violent and reanimate, even after they are dead.

In short terms, it’s Suck City, population two – Pablo and Angela.

[REC]’s greatest strength is that it manages to take some very tired tropes and a sub-genre that’s becoming dangerously close to being played out and creates something fresh and exciting. Quite a large portion of [REC]’s scariness lies in jump scares and effective tricks, but they’re at least done well and not half-heartedly.

The bad part is that [REC] perhaps gives too much away. Anytime I feel like a movie gives too much away, I think back to Vincenzo Natali’s brilliant Cube – a movie that has no real explanation for why the characters end up in the cube and is all the scarier for it. While [REC] does something a little brave in giving the origins of the zombie virus a new history and spin, perhaps less is more. Just the very thought of being trapped in an apartment building with your mutated, bloodthirsty neighbors is scary enough, surely.

The found footage aspect of [REC] is a little less obnoxious, mainly because a plot point is that Pablo’s a professional cameraman, so the footage looks cleaner and at times, less shakier than an amateur’s work would. The incessant tricks – dropping the camera on the floor, Pablo and Angela rewinding the tape over and over – get old after a while.

The movie’s a lovely, solid effort though and good enough to make you wish we got more like it more often. It feels fresh and thrilling, even with its faults, and it already has a sequel. I don’t think anyone will begrudge it a sequel or two, given that if they get time to expand on the odd backstory, the franchise could go interesting places.

If you want to see it, Netflix has it and I’d recommend loading it into your queue and watching it with friends. Perhaps not your neighbors, though.

Word. There’s been a bit of a resurgence in my interest in proper horror films recently

Word.

There’s been a bit of a resurgence in my interest in proper horror films recently – saw The Exorcist and Paranormal Activity and had the shit scared out of me both times. I’m a bit pissed off though, because I like feeling scared and there’s so few horror films that are genuinely terrifying, and earn your fear, that I wind up going on a mission to find another one and eventually get stuck watching some slasher crap.

The films I can think of that have properly fucked me up as an adult are Don’t Look Now, The Exorcist 1 & 3, Ring, [REC] and the jury’s still out on Paranormal Activity but I did drink till I passed after having seen it so that any ghosts couldn’t do any shit to me. That’s six films. SIX. I’m sure if I sat and thought about it there’d be others I’ve seen that are just as disturbing, but compare that to the amount of shit horror any film buff could reel off instantly, it’s nothing. One that pissed me off a lot recently was Mirrors, there was me thinking Keifer Sutherland was taking a decent stab at a flashy horror film – ghosts are on fire, people are ripping their jaws off – then halfway through Keifer forgets what set he’s on and it all devolves to a point where Jack Bauer has a fight with a demon that’s like the fight Arnie has with Bennett at the end of Commando. He punches a demon! Punches it!

Photo not taken from 24

Dude, basically I just need you to tell me about any other proper horror films – like when you showed me Don’t Look Now and scarred me for life with a fear of midgets (or dwarves, whatever that fucker in the red coat was).

sowasred2012 / Nov. 18th

——————————————————————————————————————————————–

Proper horror aint made any more – sweeping statement? yes. Infallible? well probably not, but generally the attention span, patience and intelligence associated with audiences up to the 70s does not really lend itself to our generation of horror audience – hence the theatres being absolutely awash with rubbish, “jumpy” thrillers, “horrorrs” and just plain gratuitous shite. SAW, HOSTEL, et al, obviously belonging to the latter camp - for some reason these filmmakers feel the need to appeal to twerps who equate horror generics with close up, sick goings on – that’s not scary it’s just unpleasant – and you can see much worse than that, for real, at websites like Ogrish, LiveLeak and Rotten.com. A damn shame believe it. And I’m not just slagging off the peddlers of gornography either.

Let’s have a look at The Omen (1976).

Peck: Gravitas. Warner: Hair

Bold, operatic, an intensely slow burning shocker. Every frame literally dripping with dread – especially the sc enes that depict “normal” life – because the tension is cranked up so much you know something is going down somewhere soon. And the music – fuckin hell the music – absolute nightmare. played completely straight by everyone – Patrick Troughton as the babbling priest, Billie Whitelaw is frankly terrifying as the staannic nanny, and Gregory Peck imbues the film with the conviction it needs to pull off a, lets be honest, silly story. And there we go – Gregory fuckin Peck!? In a horror film about a mini satan running around on earth? It’s like Daniel Day Lewis agreeing to do Scream 4 – it just wouldn’t happen nowadays. Because back then horror films were for EVERYONE – I mean not like kids, but audience over 30 were considered, so they were made for ADULTS. People who could sit for over half an hour without someone being hilariously butchered in a tumble dryer/solarium/whatever. Story matters in horror, well, SHOULD matter. And the remake? To be fair Liev Schreiber had a good crack at his role, but the whole thing was too quick, jumpy and fleeting (for me).

Not that no modern horror films are good – some of them do stick to this antiquated notion of building suspense and character, and they are among the most effective made now. And please let’s define the difference between “jumpy” and “frightening”. Scream is Jumpy. The Exorcist is fuckin frightening. I accept Scream is awesome. and so is Friday the 13th. But they are jumpy films – you don’t carry on being scared by them after – and i reckon, Mason, that is what you are chatting about. Films that FUCK YOU UP. Don’t be disheartened, on this subject you just need to think a little laterally. Horror films that are advertised as horror films nowadays are almost uniformally not horror films, as film lovers would understand the definition, in my humble opinion. In the spirit of this outside box thinking, what about non horror films that are frightening? Zodiac? Cape Fear? Jaws? as if that aint a horror film anyway – what the fuck is not horrible about a massive shark eating humans?!

scariness in 70s cop thriller ZODIAC

Horror is regularly displaced to films that deal with horrible subjects!

So, if you are on about PROPER scary films, here are a few you should definitely watch, if you aint.

PSYCHO

DELIVERANCE

THE TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE

THE ORPHANAGE

INVASION OF THE BODYSNATCHERS (1978)

THE THING

THE SHINING

ALIEN

THE DESCENT

HENRY: PORTRAIT OF A SERIAL KILLER

THE OMEN

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT

SALEM’S LOT

here’s a few contentious ones:

NIGHT OF THE HUNTER

CAPE FEAR (1991, sorry Greg)

NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN

and the most terrifying film of all time

STEPHEN KING’S IT

absolute nightmare

I have probably forgot some, and for that I apologise – these are just a load of examples so feel free to rip me to bits on them – they all scared me anyway.

gantux/nov 20th

————————————————

The Orphanage! Fuck yeah, that was a good one – that bit when she’s playing hide and seek with the ghosts toward the end and she keeps turning around, first couple times it’s just an empty room, and the next time the place is full of ghost kids – brrrrr. THAT’S the kind of fear I’m talking about, when it properly gets under your skin and hits something primal.

Get this freaky ghost sprog away from me.

I get what you’re saying with Zodiac, Jaws etc but you’re always kind of aware of what the object of your fear is capable of, whereas with demon Reagan, demon Karras, Sadako, the Medeiros girl or those ghost kids in The Orphanage, you don’t even know what they want let alone what they can do. They might want to kill you, they might not, but they’ll fucking terrorise you either way.

The Omen is a solid attempt, but it didn’t resonate so much with me as The Exorcist (which I’m only comparing it to because they share similar themes and are around the same era) – maybe it’s the death scenes, the ones I remember feel very stuntish, like it’s a religious Final Destination.

IT was something I kept missing on TV and couldn’t convince my parents to buy when I was a kid, so my first exposure to that story was when I picked up the book a few years ago and thought the whole thing was a crock of shit, with space turtles and some ridiculous plan about connecting with each other by all the guys in the group having sex with Beverley in the sewers when they’re kids. And then when I finally saw it, knowing Tim Curry and his body of work didn’t help matters.

Actually, The Thing is another good one – I’m gonna go out on a limb and say it’s a better horror film than Alien. I still think Alien overall is the much better film when you look at it regardless of genre, but the film pretty much follows slasher film rules, whereas the Thing completely fucks with your head because you can’t trust the guy who’s already dead on the table in front of you not to have his stomach open up and bite your arm off, then let his head fall off and turn into a fuck off spider.

Might watch that this weekend actually.

While investment capital seeks to exploit stimulus package programs for renewable energy projects, i

While investment capital seeks to exploit stimulus package programs for renewable energy projects, investors may want to consider the greenest form of energy out there—the megawatt no one uses, what’s known as a white credit.

“It’s much cheaper to save a unit of energy than to produce a unit of energy cheaply,” says Jeremy Panacheril, US director of global accounting and advisory firm KPMG’s cleantech group.

Energy efficiency hasn’t attracted as much attention as other green initiatives like carbon emissions reduction or the development of renewable energy, but various state governments and Congress are working on creating a new credit to measure this saved energy—the energy efficiency certificate (EEC) or white credit.

Twelve states have well-established energy efficiency portfolio standards, EEPS, or mandates, requiring investor-owned utilities to meet a certain percentage of their projected power needs through energy efficiency. Another six states are considering EEPS legislation, and current climate change bills before Congress also call for a national EEPS.

“We see room for a new type of asset,” says Jon Naimon, managing director of Seattle-based Light Green Advisors, an asset management firm working at finding a way for investors to take advantage of energy efficiency opportunities.

He adds the benefits for utilities—or for companies in sectors like real estate, where existing buildings could benefit from energy efficiency retrofits—are more tangible than efforts to generate carbon credits.

“It has tons more upside, since (efficiency) also goes to your cash flow,” he says, pointing out that energy costs can be significantly higher in older buildings.

With a white-credit incentive, a firm could save money from reduced energy use, and make additional revenue from selling EECs to a utility or other regulated entity.

An EEC market would look less like proposed carbon credit markets, and more like the trading of credits created by states’ renewable portfolio standards, RPS, regulations that began springing up in 1999, and that have now been adopted by 29 states and the District of Columbia.

These RPS regulations mandate that a certain percentage of electricity used in the state must come from renewable energy sources. To prove compliance with the regulation, eligible green power generates a credit for the utility, called a renewable energy certificate, REC.

Each REC equals one megawatt-hour of generated green energy. EEPS would set similar targets for efficiency, with an EEC equaling one megawatt-hour of saved energy.

Despite looking like carbon’s cap-and-trade system, it will be tough for individual or institutional investors to access these credits as a commodity, either directly or via futures.

“It’s probably a fairy tale right now,” says Alden Hathaway, senior vice president for business development at Sterling Planet, about the potential of widespread trading of EECs. His firm measures and certifies that generated EECs comply with regulations.

But the real benefit for investors may be in firms that improve their bottom line through the energy savings that generate EECs, and in the companies making, marketing and installing the technologies to generate those energy savings.

“What doesn’t exist is a way to invest (directly) in energy efficiency,” says Light Green’s Naimon, who adds that the $1 billion potential EEC market pales in comparison to the estimated $2 trillion of the carbon market, and to the billions already invested in renewable energy technologies, like solar.

He says one approach might to be create discrete efficiency projects. These would work like carbon offset projects and would create EECs in unregulated industries that firms in regulated sectors could buy. The project owner or developer would generate cash flow savings by conserving energy.

“White credits are a rounding error,” says Naimon.

He also sees EECs as a tool to provide transparency into a company’s energy liabilities, eventually providing the basis for a buyer of that company’s assets or products to pay a premium for an energy efficient asset, or a discount for an inefficient one.

For example, what if a buyer of a commercial building was given a 12-month energy audit for the building, in addition to a typical physical building inspection report that would go with a transaction like this?

EECs generated by the building’s current owners would provide a paper trail to the building’s efficiency; a lack of them would show a potential liability that could drag on return on equity.

Investors already confronting a bewildering array of green credits that seem to measure common environmental attributes—carbon, RECs and EECs—could be forgiven for being baffled. But they need to recognize these credits markets as proof that corporations generating such credits are serious about potential changes in their bottom line.

Lars Kvale, manager of renewable energy infrastructure at Santa Clara-based energy services firm APX Inc., says an energy efficiency market may level the playing field across state lines more than a national carbon market would.

For example, he says it would allow a state with potentially high-cost renewable energy to find a better way to reward an otherwise polluting utility’s efforts to clean up.

“It’s one of the way to get states that don’t have (green) resources to reduce some of their dirty power,” he says, a big issue in the southeast, where the bulk of states without RPS are found and where wind, solar, geothermal and hydropower renewable energy sources make less economic sense.

“The reason for a tradable market [in credits] is to get the cheapest reductions,” says Kvale, adding that, depending on the corporation involved, the cheapest approach could mean taking action to generate the credit in the first place or buying it on the secondary market.

Unlike the potential greenwashing nature of a press release about a dubious environmentally friendly initiative, owning or selling the credits should show that management has deployed shareholder equity most effectively.

“You have that certificate that shows they took the action themselves,” says Kvale.”

Over the weekend, the willingness of the Government to parlay with the Opposition on the treatment o

Over the weekend, the willingness of the Government to parlay with the Opposition on the treatment of Agriculture has become clear. An emerging compromise would be sensible: competitiveness and food security are at risk with unconstrained potential cost increases.

Actions to enable agriculture to participate in greenhouse gas emissions abatement are also under exploration. These actions might include a range of direct greenhouse-gas emissions abatement activities, which may be regulated or included as offset activities within the CPRS. Obviously, farmers want to have their cake and eat it. But there is reason for caution in pursuing this dream.

Already, carbon forestry looks like an attractive prospect for farmers to generate carbon credits. However, it is likely that many will respond with distrust to locking up land in forestry following the recent history of MIS, and the rebound in demand from agriculture and mining.

There are also options for land managers and rural industries to generate low-emissions and renewable power.

There have been a few more articles in the press in the last few weeks relating to sugar industry renewable energy developments which are illustrative of how different players are responding to Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) prices in the sector.

On October 5 in the Australian, Nicola Berkovic raised the prospect of two bagasse-fired electricity generation assets closing in NSW as a result of a rapid decline in REC prices. These assets are relatively new, but now running at a loss as REC prices are substantially below those prices envisaged prior to the passing of the Renewable Energy Target (RET) expansion.

The over-supply of RECs from Solar Hot Water heaters in the Renewable Energy Target has caused the REC price depression.

It means that, for the next few years, it is hard to see capital-intensive plant continuing to be run at a loss – as reflected by the article in the Australian. It would appear to represent a pretty substantial policy stuff-up if the RET really was meant to support low-emissions electricity generation – with the consequence that much investment will now likely be shelved.

CSR seem to be in the same boat – the REC price is unhedged, and their corporate literature suggests a more optimistic view of REC prices than we are currently experiencing. If this is the case, will CSR continue to subsidise the loss-making cogeneration assets? They are likely to, given that they are integral to core sugar assets, and given the relatively small weighting of cogeneration assets relative to sugar – so relativly low impact of losses from this division – both now and for the de-merged entity.

On the flip side, it is interesting to note the continued confidence in the sugar price re-bound, with expectations of continued strength in sugar values and correlative sugar land values.

Into the mix, North Queensland Bio-Energy Corporation are reported by the Townsville Bulletin to have purchased 107 hectares of land at Ingham, secured contracts for 2 million tonnes of sugar cane from 2012 with local farmers, and reportedly have made substantial progress being made in off-take and funding (reportedly to the tune of $400m) for sugar, ethanol, and electricity generation.

It seems that this investment reflects a medium-term view of the market – with no assets currently operating at a loss, NQBE can continue to plan assets that will not be on-line until 2012, in the expectation that REC (and electricity) prices will have recovered. The investment decision may reflect a positive view of future REC market developments, a potential to cross-subsidise through sugar and ethanol components of the plant, and blind faith. Whether NQBE can secure commercially-viable electricity and REC off-take contracts is yet to be seen.

For prices to improve substantially in the short-term, REC oversupply from Solar Hot Water needs to be addressed. Eliminating one or other of the existing double subsidy of the direct $1600 Government grant or the REC creation potential would be a good start. Continuation of current REC market conditions will mean continuation of stalled or cancelled investment in renewable energy generation.

Whether and how much agriculture can substantially benefit from other low-emissions activity investment is likely to emerge though political negotiation, and consideration of market, budget, and scientific considerations. Of particular interest is clearly the extent to which agriculture might participate in generation of carbon offsets under the CPRS.

However, farmers are unlikely to find an easily-accessible El Dorado through the CPRS in the short-term.

When one looks at experience to date with the RET, solar rebates, and prevarication and lack of clarity around CPRS thus far, it will not be surprising if agricultural industries are suspicious and less amenable to being ‘fooled twice’ when presented with promises of profit-making market-based opportunities under emissions trading. No point getting excited quite yet.

Betyg: 4

The Cowboys have an electric offense though, so the Eagles may need to score like last week if they want to win. The Eagles defense needs to try and stop the Tony Romo-Miles Austin connection. Austin has been the surprise of the year as …

Other than your own team, and the super bowl opener: Cowboys Bucs Broncos Bengals Lions Saints Jaguars Colts Dolphins Falcons Vikings Browns Jets Texans Eagles Panthers 49ers Cardinals Rams Seahawks Redskins Giants Bears Packers Bills Patriots Chargers Oakland I’d list them as: 1. Bears vs Packers – The debut of Cutler and Rodgers. Will the Packers defense fulfill its promise to become more aggressive and flourish in its new 3-4 scheme? How will Cutler fair in the season opener with his new team? Plus, the battle of two young QB’s with a large rivalry should always be a classic. 2. Bills vs Patriots. Self explanatory 3. Eagles vs Panthers. Probably going to be a heavy ground game. Lots of injuries too. Should be an interesting game. The Eagles should win since the Panthers run defense is nowhere near as good as the Eagles, even though I hate the Eagles. Brian Westbrook must be healthy though. Look for the Saints to score over 45 points. Honestly, the worst defense last year(Lions) against the best offense last year(Saints). Should be like watching paint dry if you’re a Detroit fan@swag: Tell that to the players LOL

What do you think the AFC East will look like at seasons end?
1.how do you feel about this list from SI? (i personally feel there are some flaws) 2. What is your top 5 backfields in the NFL? _______________________________________ heres the writers top 5 click the link for the rest 1. San Diego Chargers Who: QB Philip Rivers; RBs LaDanian Tomlinson, Darren Sproles Add/subtract: When you have the NFL’s top-rated passer and two backs combining for 1,440 rush yards, 81 receptions and 18 TDs, you don’t need to add much. The Chargers went big on power, drafting two offensive linemen and two defensive linemen with their first four picks. Of course, getting Shawne Merriman back may be the biggest “add” of all. Questionable: How much longer can L.T. continue being L.T.? And will Rivers’ maturity finally match his talent? Maybe more to the point, if Merriman and that defense start setting up this backfield on short fields, how good can this team be? The thought: Rivers and the Bolts got a delicious taste of what it feels like when it all comes together. And L.T., one of the great tailbacks in NFL history, has at least one year left, and his understudy would start for more than a few clubs. 2. New York Giants Who: QB Eli Manning; RBs Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw Add/subtract: The Giants will miss 1,000-yard back Derrick Ward and WR Plaxico Burress (who they sorely missed last season). But the Giants drafted two WR’s (Hakeem Nicks, Ramses Barden), one TE (Travis Beckum) and an OT (Will Beatty) in the first three rounds to add playmates for an already elite backfield. Questionable: The Burress aftershocks should be over, but are they? The thought: This top-10 offense was on a mission to improve its skill positions. It will be difficult to keep it from topping the 427 points it notched last season. 3. Dallas Cowboys Who: QB Tony Romo; RBs Marion Barber, Felix Jones, Tashard Choice Add/subtract: Terrell Owens. You decide if that’s an addition or not. Questionable: Can Roy Williams become the deep threat Romo needs to force defenses out of eight-man fronts? The thought: Romo’s passer rating (91.4) was significantly higher than his U.S. Open qualifying score (80), and that’s a good thing. Instead of handing clubs to caddies, he’ll be handing pigskins to the three-headed monster at tailback. Having all those options will allow Romo to play relaxed and balanced — and talk to Jason Witten without T.O. getting suspicious. 4. New England Patriots Who: QB Tom Brady; RBs Laurence Maroney, Fred Taylor Add/subtract: Taylor is a class vet who fits the Patriots’ mold. Brady returns to added OL depth and help at WR in the form of Joey Galloway and Greg Lewis, respectfully. Questionable: Brady’s knee is clearly the big question, but it’s not the only one. How much fuel do Taylor, Galloway and others have left? The thought: This bunch didn’t miss many beats when Matt Cassell took over for Brady. And do we think Brady will come back even more motivated than usual, leading a team that uncharacteristically missed the playoffs? 5. Philadelphia Eagles Who: QB Donovan McNabb; RB Brian Westbrook Add/subtract: LT Jason Peters is a franchise addition in front of McNabb and Westbrook, and Stacy Andrews is another starter-grade OL addition. Drafting Jeremy Maclin in the first round this season and DeSean Jackson in the second last year does nothing but make McNabb and Westbrook more dangerous. Questionable:The heavy load on Westbrook has worn him down and McNabb is high mileage at 32. The Thought: With the draft of Pitt RB LeSean McCoy in Round 2, McNabb and Westbrook now may feel like they’re in Kiddieland. link http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/05/22/backfields/index.html?eref=T1I agree with most of you, i would also throw the Titans somewhere in the mix with the Johnson/White combination. imo i think that Reggie Bush still needs to prove himself as a rb in the nfl, and the raiders backs definitely need to be higher on the list with 1987 rushing yardsdzadb i completely agree with youabout mullin

Sharks haven’t been going to well this year and I think they will fight hard against a determined Rabbitohs side. Sharks have Gallen back which is an influence. Roosters vs. Dragons – Dragons by 22. Dragons will come out fighting against a young Roosters side. Dragons just have more experience and are going GREAT. Storm vs. Warriors – Storm by 4. Storm have been lacking in attack this season, but I think they will come out hard against a DETERMINED Warriors outfit. Storm will come out JUST on top. Cowboys vs. Sea Eagles – Cowboys by 10. Eagles won’t play there best without Stewart. He has been the difference for them in the past 2 weeks. Raiders vs. Bulldogs – Bulldogs by 12. Dogs have been playing GREAT all season, whilst Raiders have not. Dogs will come out HARD aginst the Raiders outfit, I think Dogs will just have to much potential. Tigers vs. Knights – Tigers by 8. Tigers will ocme out FIRED up. Knights will be on the back hand of a STRONG Tigers side. Panthers vs. Titans – Panthers by 22.
Here Is Some Tipping Help For People?
Many people say the don’t judge things by appearance, but as humans, we stereotype everyday subconciously. Of course you can’t blame people for judging others, because face it, some of the time the stereotypes make alot of sense. For example, if you were offered $100,000 to build a highly technological object and you could ask anyone to help you, would you ask a fraternity guy whose closet basically consists of brands like Abercrombie Fitch, Aeropostale, and American Eagle or would you choose someone with looks that greatly resembled someone such as Bill Gates? Pretty easy to decide isn’t it? Stereotyping has evolved throughout the ages. However, most of the time stereotypes are unfair and wrong. Why should one person be singled out as smarter, more athletic, weaker, or less likely to succeed just because of the qualities or actions of the rest of their demographic? It has been proven in studies that teachers are easier on girls in subjects like math and science just because of the myth that boys are better at the subjects. Why do people believe stuff like that? Some people say that there is a ‘math gene’ in males, but since that has not yet been proven, I just say that is stereotyping. Especially considering the fact that they have shown that boys and girls test scores in math and science seem to be on about the same level. That is just one of the many examples of how stereotyping effects our perception of reality. We see things, make assumptions, and then we immediately assume that the whole group is exactly like that one individual. Most people are easily offended when a common stereotype is used against them. In Texas, I know a lot of people who get offended when the cowboy boot/cowboy hat/ ridin’ on a horse into town/ YEE-HAA/howdy y’all stereotype is used in their presence. Also a lot of stereotypes are based on their somatotypes (how their body is built). Endomorphic (soft and round)people seem to be stereotyped as sociable, relaxed, and fond of eating. Mesomorphic (muscular and strong) people are thought of as energetic, courageous, and assertive. Ectomorphic (thin and fragile) people are characterized as artistic, brainy, and introverted. Stereotypes are ideas that are widely agreed upon by a society and they are passed down from generation to generation. By passed down from generation to generation I don’t mean that a child’s parent will say “That guy is smarter because he’s Asian” to their child when they’re young, but it is just one of those things that you just know from observing life and people. Just like blinking and breathing, stereotypes just come naturally. Stereotyping isn’t always an intentional act of rudeness. Usually people just use it to simplify our view of the world. We like to see people as ‘groups’ so we can easily evaluate them instead of having to take the time to get to know them individually. For example, many people think that age is a key factor in wisdom, responsibility, charictaristics, and attitudes, but in truth a 12 year old could be more responsible than a 20 year old if they had the right upbringing. Also, gender stereotyping is very common. Females are portrayed to be weak and helpless, while men are portrayed as strong and courageous. In my opinion, males and females both have the same size ego, but males tend to protect theirs more by saying that their failures are ‘bad luck’ while females put more of the blame on theirselves for failing a task. Because their egos are usually larger than that of a females, men are usually more confident in themselves therefore more is expected from them. Men are expected to succeed, but if they fail at something they are treated more harshly than if a girl fails. In old and even recent times men look down on women. Gustave Le Bon, a French social phsychologist, sociologist, and amateur physicist said in 1879 that women are “closer to children and savages than to an adult civilized man.” Napoleon said “Woman is our property we are not hers because she produces children for us – we do not yield any to her. She is therefore our possession as the fruit tree is that of the gardener.” As we moved into this century, the stereotypes have wiggled their way into the media. Have you ever seen an actual women who looked exactly like a barbie doll just walking on the sidewalk? Dolls, celebrities, and advertisements have persuaded people that there is only one way to look, think, believe, or be. They have tried to take away all individualism by making people feel horrible about their appearance or attitude. If you think about it, they are probably just trying to make everyone exactly alike so it would be even easier to stereotype people. The media always portrays men as the heros (Superman, Batman, and Hulk) and females as either the damsel in distress or the sidekick. The make it out so it seems like the woman couldn’t be a hero even if she wanted to. Before 1849 all a girl could be in the medical proffBob you’re not nice. I’m freakin 12 okay? It’s not a paragraph, but I need your opinion on it.

Is this a good paragraph about stereotypes? ?

Im an Eagles fan, and i live in San Antonio, and alot of people here are cowboy fans so everytime the eagles ?
In the last game at your almost 40 year old stadium you get beat by a team that was 5-11 last year with a rookie QB, and you let a 260lb fullback run for the longest run in the stadium’s almost 40 year history in the last game there with every Cowboy of signifigance in attendance. There is a 2 hour celebration planned for after the game, but half the stadium leaves before it even starts because your current team is so awful. All you have to do is win the game and your in the playoffs, only to be humliated in the worst loss your team has had in 30 years at 44-6. Your the laughing stock of the NFL. Which one is more embarrassing? PS. Props to Chad C, you predicted the score last week at 45-3, well 44-6 is pretty close. It’s just you picked the wrong team bahahahaha It doesn’t matter how many rings the Eagles have, as long as we keep ruining the Cowboys playoff hopes
