Momma called the Doctor, and the Doctor said, “No more monkeys jumping on the bed.”

We all have heard this rhyme at one point in our childhood, youth, or adulthood. It is a sad, but smart little song that helps children understand the potential risks of jumping on their bed, while teaching them how to subtract by counting down the number of monkeys put on the sidelines from concussion, and, is it true— the rhyme helps wound up children to naturally come out of their sillies by singing, jumping up and down on the ground during the song, and exerting their energy in a safe and positive way. The current treatment of course would be Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine, or Atomoxetine. Of course the nursery rhyme has many other readings and sub-stories too, but this is a starting point for my blog posting today.

Dr. Cason and I were talking recently over email (yes, Dr. Cason and I talk, and it’s really cool, maybe it will continue…). Here is a snippet of our conversation, because she said I made her laugh all the way in Guam and it will be beneficial to share the laughter on the blog too.

Looks like a migraine. I can relate. HA!!

You sure you wanna do this?

Art Doctor Says:
Yes, I do… I’m scared a little bit though, especially coming from art school. I go to the Anatomy lab tomorrow morning at 8am helping my old professor make sure there’s no “fainters who skipped breakfast and fell asleep on the stool-fools”… and wonder why I’m doing this, but I’m so fascinated and so motivated.

I read the article— the photo-guy looks like he might be holding his right dorsi-lateral prefrontal cortex and contemplating becoming an artist for-sake of getting out of the long hours of medicine. Nothing new in the article though- media says the same, my GP says the same, so it is a matter of choice I think.

I was on the streetcar (in Toronto-daily social experiment) yesterday and there were only two kids about 6 years old screaming their heads off, rattling the seats because they were on their way home, hungry, and hadn’t had dinner yet and fighting over who gets the window seat. The mom wasn’t doing anything about the screaming—thank gawd for ipods— but I thought, I’ll never have kids, and then the thought went away and turned into, maybe I will, maybe I will work with them, but o-man… these kids are brats.. that must give you a migrane all by itself in the office… Ped Docs are rockstars, as far as I’m concerned.

There was my blog post that hasn’t happened in a while because of thesis, but it’s for you

Take care Dr. Cason.

Dr. Cason says (since she would probably write this on her blog anyways):

See now you have me laughing all the way over here in Guam!

Funny I love photography and have been wondering if I could ever make a living at it and then I think What the hell did you go to medical school for?? I think it is ironic that you are an artist and wanting to be a physician. Maybe you’ll be like Netter who was a surgeon and artist! What a contribution to the medical world and he became FAMOUS!!

I love kids and yet the screaming gets to me too- Today I leaned down into my 7 years olds face- after telling her a gazillion times to stop interrupting me and said, “When my lips are moving and there is sound coming out that means I’m speaking!” She left the room and I felt guilty. Crap! another mommy moment I wish I could take back!

I’m incredibly retrained when it comes to the patients. But then they leave my office when the appt is over! LOL!

Cut the email and post it as a blog post! Two birds- one stone. It’s called multitasking and you need the practice so might as well start now.

Art Doctor (yet to email-back, but decided to take up the blogging multitasking challenge)

I think the mommy moment was handled very well. My supervisor, Dr. Scientist always talks about how empty he feels when his patients leave after 15 minutes and he only gets to know a snippet of their lives, while wanting to know more. Yes, he’s a good Doc.

Just as cockroaches come knocking on your doors at home, so do lice in the Doctor’s office, but the two can never be compared, or measured together. It is a struggle for everyone-work, life—not balance, because who can really say they are balanced?

Perfection does not exist because the brain is malleable; do we finally know how to “do the right thing,” as mothers when we’re no longer needed as mothers with our children all grown up, mothering their own children? Do we know the mothering secret when we are eighty-nine, sitting on the veranda painting the rose arbour? When is the A-ha moment? Or, is mothering about the journey?

I can’t wait to be a mother, but I don’t know how to say why this is true, and maybe this won’t come until my child is 13 years old. Maybe because it just is true?

The topic of multitasking will come soon…good idea.

Take care Dr. Cason.

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product

An organization will not begin the transformation until it is aware that the quality of the product or service must be improved. Awareness comes about when an organization loses market share or realizes that quality and productivity go hand in hand. It also occurs if TQM is mandated by the customer or if management realizes that TQM is a better way to run business and compete in domestic and world markets.

Automation or other productivity enhancements might not help a corporation if it is unable to market its product or service because the quality is poor. The Japanese learned this fact from practical experience. They could sell their products only at ridiculously low prices, and even then it was difficult to secure repeat sales. Until recently, corporations have not recognized the importance of quality. However, a new attitude has emerged—quality first among the equals of cost and service—the customer wants value.

Quality and productivity are not mutually exclusive. Improvements in quality can lead directly to increased productivity and other benefits. The improved quality results in improvement in productivity, capacity, and profit. Many quality improvement projects are achieved with the same workforce, same overhead, and no investment in new equipment.

More and more corporations are recognizing the importance and necessity of quality improvement if they are to survive domestic and world-wide competition. Quality improvement is not limited to the conformance of the product or service to specifications; it also involves the inherent quality in the design of the system. The prevention of the product, service, and process problems is a more desirable objective than taking corrective action after the product is manufactured or a service rendered.

TQM does not occur overnight; there are no quick remedies. It takes a long time to build the appropriate emphasis and techniques into the culture. Over-emphasis on short term results and profits must be set aside so long-term planning and constancy of purpose will prevail.

We here at DustSleeve happen to think Athens, GA’s Allison Weiss is pretty fantastic. Not only is she cute, a master of social media, as D.I.Y as they come, and a pretty serious pancake fan, she also happens to be really, really talented. November 24th marks the release of her first full-length LP (though sixth release), and you can expect nothing less than her signature quirk-pop appeal in a clean, catchy, hope-filled collection worth keeping on repeat over this holiday season. If you can’t wait to get your hands on the disk, you have TWO DAYS to pre-order …Was Right All Along and get a ton of goodies as your reward! For now you can hear two MP3’s from the album, and check the tour section at the bottom of the post for the first string of upcoming dates.

If there’s one thing you don’t want to do in Oak Grove, Kentucky, it’s get caught with some far out shroomage. Our friends King Khan & BBQ had to learn it the hard way last week when Arish and Kristin got held up in the slammer for possession of illegal mushrooms. Although the blame was tried to put off on their manager/chaperone, the Christian County (yikes) Jail set the record straight. A few shows were cancelled and fans are left mostly un-surprised.

The pictures above are from Mercy Hospital in Portland Maine. Kal-Vin Construction of Hudson, NH designed and installed the flashing system around windows installed at the hospital. Kal-Vin Construction had to set up containment areas at around 20 of the windows that were installed because of the improper design and installation of the flashing(which Kal-Vin designed and installed), moisture that was seeping into the walls and ceiling raised concerns about mold and aspergillus . The drywall, insulation and ceiling tiles all had to be removed because of severe moisture that seeped into the walls and ceiling.

There are many concerns regarding moisture that leaks into walls and ceilings because you can never be quite sure if you contained all of it and that mold could create Aspergillus which is deadly especially to patients with compromised immune syptoms.

Aspergillosis is the name of a variety of different diseases that are caused by Aspergillus molds. Those who have weak immune systems, such as infants and the elderly.

Those who have compromised immune systems, such as people with HIV, AIDs, or other diseases that weaken the body are particularly at risk to develop one of many forms of Aspergillosis.

The symptoms of Aspergillosis can include cough, chest pain or trouble breathing, and fever.

Typically only people with immune systems that are already weak or who already suffer from other kinds of lung diseases are in danger of developing the disease.

Major forms of the disease that occur in human beings are allergic aspergillosis, which affects cystic fibrosis, asthma, and sinusitis patients, acute invasive aspergillosis, and disseminated invasive aspergillosis. In February a lawsuit was filed in Tampa Florida against St Josephs Hospital after three young cancer patients died within a month of one another after stays at St. Joseph’s Hospital.

Attorney Steve Yerrid says the children were exposed to a dangerous fungus released during a hospital construction project. Their immune systems already weakened by disease, the children succumbed to mold-related infections, the suit alleges.

The children’s parents are suing the hospital for negligence, contending that it failed to protect its most vulnerable patients. Yerrid, who has a track record of winning large verdicts against local health care providers, spoke Tuesday on behalf of the families.

“They know that the system can never bring back their children,” he said. “But they know that the system can deliver safety for other children.”

Though she could not comment specifically on the lawsuit or the patients, St. Joseph’s spokeswoman Lisa Patterson said the hospital is careful to use barriers and filter the air around its construction areas.

“Anytime we do any kind of construction we follow all the necessary precautions,” she said. “Obviously, patient safety is the top priority for the children’s hospital.”

As part of a $1 million renovation to its children’s oncology center, St. Joseph’s last year tripled the size of the outpatient area where young cancer patients receive their chemotherapy, creating private treatment rooms equipped with flat-screen TVs.

The children represented in Yerrid’s lawsuit had been formally admitted to the hospital, and spent many of their final days in rooms one floor above the construction activity.

The lawsuit says the hospital did not guard those rooms from contaminated dust and airborne particles generated by the demolition and removal of plaster walls and ceiling tiles.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 2 million infections from a variety of causes are acquired each year in health care settings, resulting in 90,000 deat

Welcome! Here at Universal Dork we try to offer diversity in our blogging that will appeal to all dorks out there. Here is a new running series of blogs appropriately entitled Cartoons Dorks Should be Watching! It will feature newer (within the last 5-10 yrs) cartoons that our generation might be missing. Or frankly, cartoons you might be passing off as ‘toon trash on Saturday mornings. It needs to be said that many of these cartoons have stayed focused at their primary audience…kids…so you have to enter willingly and just be a lover cartoons with great characters and stories.

Read on after the jump for just a bit more tutelage…

In the day of Hollywood remaking, reviving, recreating, etc., and every movie featuring characters that are/were cult/popular when we were growing up…I have to say that the state of cartoons has never been better. Easily we had great ‘toons in the 80’s (i.e., Transformers, G.I. Joe, He-Man), and sure, some have been “re-imaged”, those of course will be covered, but there are also some very creative and original cartoons that all dorks should be tuning into now.

I realize that most approach today’s cartoons with the same thought…”But they are sooooo child-ish, and there is too much comic relief for the kids…” yada, yada, yada… If you have not done so, I encourage you to go back and watch some of those classic ‘toons you hold so dear to your heart. I think you would find that they are very child-ish and there is too much comic relief…as if they were made for kids…I smell a conspiracy here! But at the core, the story, message, and characters were phenomenal and still to this day they inspire the hell out of me. Each has original characters and underlying storylines that are nothing short of prime sci-fi and fantasy. At a minimum, these are cartoons you should be encouraging your kids to watch to unleash their primal inner dork! Hell, we need all the help we can get to continue this lineage of dork.

So without further adieu, Universal Dork will kick off the series covering great cartoons of that are going to be considered cult and classics 20 years from now. Keep an eye out in the near future for the first installment of Cartoons Dorks Should Be Watching!

In the first installment, Universal Dork with cover Ben 10!

And as always, we appreciate your following the Dorks at the Dork! Universal Dork!

A Solid Foundation: Psalm 119:1-8

Aleph 1 Blessed are they whose ways are blameless,
who walk according to the law of the LORD.

2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes
and seek him with all their heart.

<sup>3</sup> They do nothing wrong;
they walk in his ways.

4 You have laid down precepts
that are to be fully obeyed.

5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast
in obeying your decrees!

6 Then I would not be put to shame
when I consider all your commands.

7 I will praise you with an upright heart
as I learn your righteous laws.

<sup>8</sup> I will obey your decrees;
do not utterly forsake me.

The book of Psalms contains 150 poetic and joyous praises recited or song by the Hebrews in their every day setting and community worship. The psalms are broken down into seven groups. There are wisdom psalms, royal psalms, lament psalms, Imprecatory psalms, thanksgiving psalms, pilgrimage psalms and enthronement psalms.

Psalm 119 has common characteristics with Psalms. 1 and 37.They are part of the Wisdom psalms, giving instruction and practical guidelines for godly living and direction as children of God pursue living in HIS will.

While there are seven psalm groups, the actual psalms fall into five classifications that relate to the first five books of the Old Testament. Some scholars have gone so far as to call them “The Pentateuch of David” because they mirror the books of the Law of Moses. These five books or groupings put a timeline to the collection and gathering of the Psalms. Psalm 119 is part of the last section.

This last section was believed to have been collected during the postexilic days of Ezra (534 B.C – 445 B.C.) about 600 hundred years after the first group was put together. It focuses upon the sufficiency and praise of God’s name and word.

Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Bible with 176 verses, broken up into 22 sections each containing eight verses. Each section starts with a letter of the Hebrew alphabet. Verses 1-8 start with aleph or “A”, the next group of eight starts with beth or “B”, and they continue. Collected during the time of Ezra, no one knows for sure the author or authors of this Psalm. Some have attributed it to David, while others suggest someone else may have written it. For the remainder of this report I will assume David is the author. Evidence suggests David as the author because the psalm is an alphabet acrostic, found only in the psalms attributed to King David. Only King David refers to himself (or is referred to) as “Your Servant” when addressing God. In the full text of Psalm 119, the author shares his experience of suffering being unjustly pursued, which is reminiscent of trials David had to face while living.

Verses 1 through 8 of Psalm 119 find the heart of the writer expressing his love for the Lord. In the first eight verses, God’s Word is law, testimonies, ways, precepts, statues, commandments, judgments’ and statues. Our modern English translation does well to capture the original intent of Psalm 119; however, one recognizes the genius and beauty that this psalm presented in its original language. Walter Brueggeman said this about Psalm 119; “it affirms that torah will cover every facet of human existence, everything from A to Z. There is no human crisis or issue in which one need go outside the field of torah obedience to live fully…life is reliable and utterly symmetrical when the torah is honored…Obedience to the torah is a source of light, life, joy, delight…The torah is no burden but a mode of joyous existence…The teachers of this psalm are not worried or seduced by legalism. They do not find the commandments restrictive or burdensome.” – Message of the Psalms

Scholars believe that children memorized this passage to maintain their Jewish heritage while held captive in exile. To make sure that no one forgot the past while looking forward to a new tomorrow. These are words of comfort for every Jew. They were true then, and they are true today for everyone on a Journey seeking God.

The psalmist delights in seeking out the comfort of Love that God has extended to each of us though our daily walk. It is here in God’s word that we find the heart of God along with HIS wants and desires for us. The devotion of the psalmist goes further as he illuminates us by grouping the eight verses into the following:

Verses 1-3 share a picture of devotion: Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways. Psalm 119: 1-3 NIV

Here we see a person who is not perfect, but whose way is blameless because they have engulfed their life in the way of God. It is our daily walk with God that keeps us focused aiming for the goal. This brings honor and sense of duty to those who have come home from a foreign land starting their life all over again. Through our devotion, we see and hear God allowing HIS will to rule over our living.

Verses 4-5 share our cry of desperation: You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! Psalm 119:4-5 NIV

As you read these words, you hear the cry of David calling out to God. You hear his anguish and feel his struggles; you hear his groan of obedience to the Will of God. In addition, you recognize that you are just like David. In these moments, we find our self face to face with God, seeking HIM out even though we feel inadequate and unworthy. Nevertheless, his Word sustains us in every trial. We need to discover what the psalmist has learned. We need the psalmist to teach us how to cry out to God in our desperation. We desire to be honest and truthful with God in all of our endeavors.

Verses 6-8 share the vision of dedication: Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me. Psalm 119:6-8 NIV

David is sharing with us the fact that none of us want to be put to shame, we are doing the very best we can do. Yet, in spite of that, we are raising our heart upon the Lord. Seeking to learn how to worship and love him in new and exciting ways. We know the days will not always be good, but we are on the journey to a new life. We fight to be authentic and real as we follow his word. We strive to hear his words as we seek his voice on the journey to our new life.

Psalm 119 has not lost any of its splendor and beauty through translation, and is relevant today just as it was when it flourished in the daily life of the Hebrew people. While this is just a part of entire Psalm, you see it as the building block or foundation on which the rest of the psalm is constructed.

There is a sense of imaginative interpretation through the people as their journey has taken them through days of turmoil and grief, reciting this passage to receive comfort and stay focused on the God who loves them. This passage keeps hope and faith alive flowing in the hearts and soul of the people.

There is comfort when we follow God’s word. As his children we grow when we joyfully praise and worship of Him every day. God is experienced through our living prayer as prayed through the psalmist and our understanding of his writing. We have a constant reminder that all is possible through our love and acceptance of God. He was with us in the beginning, and he is with us through every part of the journey.

Allow God to be your foundation, let him be with you on your journey.

Blessings,

Tim
