Great Thanksgiving yesterday with my brother and his family. Even down to the foosball tournament we had!
This morning, up at 3:30am to get to work and open the shoe store for 5am for black friday. Looks like we’re gonna make the day financially, so my boss is happy and so am I.

Now to the recession and depression. We are not in a depression. We might be in a bit of a recession, but I’ll say this about that: maybe people aren’t spending as much, but, and I’m very old school conservative about this, I consider much of the stuff sold in malls crap, and people threw their money at that crap all day long. You know, if times were really hard, and you had a pair of shoes, you wouldn’t go to the mall and buy two more pairs because it was a good sale, or buy perfume and cologne, or electronics, or any number of other things. You know, for a while, I was on a Waltons kick, and among other things, it really depicts what life was like during the depression and how people survived and made due. We today don’t have a clue about real hardship and how to cope(well, I know I went through some hard times recently and let the depression era mentality kick in–you don’t buy what you don’t absolutely need). So, you know, many Americans still have money to spend, and they spent it today…

I am at work today on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I was feeling bored and slightly annoyed to be here. Until I read this article and began to feel like an ungrateful schmuck – and on the day after Thanksgiving! So I must reflect on how thankful I should be to have a good job that pays the bills and even allows me to support my wife through graduate school. I won’t thank God for this. I’m supposing he would help the unemployed Christians and the starving kids before he would do me any favors. But I definitely have a lot of people and circumstances to be thankful for – including my damn good luck. So here is the view from the window beside my desk. I do not think it is such a bad view.

The night before Thanksgiving, there was one person’s comment to my Huffpost comment that insisted on the isolation of US economy from the world, protectionism, and the lie of globalization. As there must be a lot of people who share the same opinion as this person’s, I want to clarify their misunderstanding as much as possible. The contents of the comment is listed as below:

danarothrock replied on Nov 25, 2009 at 16:55:50

“Tarrifs were not the main cause of the 1930s depression. The cause was the exact same financial casino gambling that brought us down this time. Hence, the Glass-Steagall Act, which was repealed in 1999.

America grew strong in isolation and protectionism. We produced almost everything we needed, except rum, coffee and bananas.

Globalization – “Flat Earth” – has been the theory that has destroyed the economy of this country and several other countries. We are on the losing end of every “Free Trade” agreement. We are trading jobs for foreign workers. The Ex-Im Bank and Overseas Private Investment Corporation (two agencies of the US Treasury) are funding $billions every year for American companies to move overseas. 67% of American corporations have plans to increase offshore operations. Do some research on “protectionism”. “Globalization is a LIE.”

My Response was:

Although I am tired, sleepy now. I am still almost sure that “tariffs, protectionism” were the causes of Great Depression. That’s why, since then, there were international multilateral negotiations to reduce tariffs worldwide and not to repeat the same bad experience of tariff imposition / protection. If you were not sleepy, please check the fact and let me know !

Regarding “America grew strong in isolation and protectionism,” this is the most “RIDICULOUS” statement that I have ever heard! You want to put this country in economic, political exile away from the rest of world and cut off its position of economic and political superpower in the world to degrade into poorer and poorer country? Let me guess. You must have never left your block of town to travel around and see the reality of the world.

What do we trade off by engaging in world trade?

LOSS :

Some labor-intensive manufacturing jobs as imports of those goods gain domestic market sales.

GAIN:

A. Gaining of export-related jobs (this is one reason of why the White House wish China to save US economy and unemployment problem through their purchase of US goods);

B. Cheaper imported goods make us be able to buy more goods, more foods, clothings, electronics, etc with same income. We feel richer when we can consume cheaper import goods; we feel poorer when cheap imports are not available and we have to buy more expensive domestically produced goods (please compare the numbers of grocery items that, with $100, we can buy from Wal-Mart (many of them cheap imports) and from a rather expensive grocery store. You will feel the difference of how much we can consume more or less with same income depending on whether cheaper imports are available to us or not.

Without cheap imports, we may save some jobs of ours or our fellow workers, but we altogether/collectively have to eat less food, wear less clothings and shoes, buy less toy…overall we will feel poorer without trade than when we have imports.

It would be a choice of what we prefer.

If you’ve been watching the media’s take on the Real Estate market in Canada, but specifically in our area of Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville and the rest of the GTA, it’s been touted that we’re in full recovery mode. Recession? What Recession? The Real Estate market is hot! hotter than ever!! (You get the idea…)

Right? How is this possible? I’m sure that I’m not the only one left scratching my head when 1+1 is now starting to equal 3.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of selective journalism out there. What? you mean the media has an agenda??!! Well …. of course! They’re in the business of selling stories and growing their readership – hence the old adage “you can’t believe everything you read”. I like to look at the big picture of Real Estate and actually have my clients trust that I am in fact living up to my fiduciary responsibilities of making sure their best interests are at hand.

So what is really going on? In my view there’s a number of factors at play:

First off there’s historically low interest rates. In the last year, first time home buyers have been dominating the real estate market bringing with them minimal equity and long amortization rates. Historically low mortgage rates are encouraging first-time buyers into the real estate market and existing home buyers to trade-up at what could very well turn out to be the peak of a ‘bubble’.

Add to this a lack of available homes for sale, you now have low-equity buyers creating greater demand and driving the prices of homes and condos higher. In many cases, properties are selling at a premium or above asking price. In the Oakville Real Estate market, this has been evident most in the detached home market, particularly in North Oakville in the $450,000 – $650,000 price range.

What’s wrong with this? How is a strong Real Estate market a liability? It might not be, except that the rest of the economic picture isn’t so rosy… Unemployment numbers are still lagging, manufacturing and exports are hurting because of the strong Loonie relative to the US dollar, businesses are cutting back and wage freezes are everywhere. Yet, despite all this people are snapping up houses as soon as they hit the market.

The problem isn’t now. The problem is next year when interest rates start to creep up and the H.S.T is in effect increasing costs to consumers and home owners. And in 2011 after real estate values start to drop because of lessened demand and rising debt and and outbreak of negative equity we will see just how big this bubble is.

What are your thoughts on our current Real Estate market in Toronto, Oakville, Mississauga and the GTA?

Today marks the anniversary of my first day of unemployment. Believe me, this is no cause for celebration. I have many things to give thanks for: family, good health, home (at least for now), and enough UCI funds to keep me somewhat afloat a few weeks longer. I’m thankful that I am better off than some, and I still help those who I can. Many things have changed over the past year, and not for the better.

In thinking about my displaced employment situation, it is often hard to push back those negative feelings of depression and hopelessness. Sometimes the only thing that helps me is knowing that I am not alone in this betrayal of the American Dream. It doesn’t necessarily make me feel any better, but at least I know that millions of us once hardworking Americans are going through this same bad time together. When there is 10.5% unemployment in our country, we have to realize that this is not our fault (despite what GOP pundits claim!) Hopefully we will all survive it together as well.

What one-year of the unemployed life looks like financially:

Notice anything amiss here? Despite lowered property values, the county and school taxes continue to rise. The mortgage payment has also risen, in spite of my many repeated attempts to get Bank of America to reduce them through the Hope for Homeowners program. The credit card debt and student loans are a result of my going back to college, something not really affordable, but necessary in getting a better job. Basically, my mortgage eats up almost the entire monthly income, forcing use of the credit cards to pay for necessities like food, gas, and sometimes even the utility bills.

The one think you really notice when you are in tight financial straits is how the cost of EVERYTHING continues to rise, yet the economy is so stinkin’ bad. No wonder the students at the UC schools were protesting a 30% tuition increase.

The one think I hate, is when people (usually the smug employed ones) somehow justify this mess by insinuating that all of this is somehow your own fault. I don’t live beyond my means. I didn’t buy a house I couldn’t afford. I didn’t get fired because of job performance; I got laid off because my company shut the doors. I do, and am continuing to do everything within my power to find another job. Such people like to finger point, but in my opinion that is really just a way to boost their own misguided sense of morality. I will follow up this subject in another post of more useless advice for the unemployed at a later time. Until then, keep some hope alive my fellow Displaced workers. We will all get though this together.

I would say so … definitely recession proof. The numbers say it all. Our network marketing organization had a record month in October and we have already surpassed those numbers for the month of November 2009. The company, YLEO, also reported a record month for October. What is really remarkable is this record was set after being in business with YLEO for 13 years. We believe the upside is still about 10 fold; that would be an exponential increase.

The network marketing industry really sparkles during the economic downturns. Many more people are drawn to it because it represents opportunity and freedom, financial freedom and time freedom for those who are ready and have chosen their company wisely.

More on this in a future post.

At a recent meeting the question was asked of us ‘What are we not talking about today that could affect us in 12 months time?’

Ideas such as consumerism, world poverty, unemployment and war were discussed. But one suggestion I can’t stop thinking about, possibly because it directly involves me, is that we might not see an end to this recession until 2012 and I’m not prepared for that.

I’ve bought in to the idea that we would be seeing the very welcomed green shoots of recovery towards the summer of 2010. I’ve battened down the hatches, tightened my belt and pulled up my socks, but it appears I should now start to take this more seriously than I have, or at least for longer, than I have.

I’ve heard that more businesses fail when the economy gains momentum, than through the recession itself. Apparently some of us just aren’t prepared for it. We might not have considered the urgency of replenishing stock, the replacement of staff, or the purchase equipment crucial to keep us abreast of our competition.

Maybe the cold, wet and rather dark morning gave rise to the pessimism of the meeting. However I will certainly be considering my strategy on how to move successfully when the glorious time comes.

The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) released a report that states that businesses in the UK could save over £6 billion by putting some easy money saving steps in place.

By managing resources efficiently small businesses could reportedly save themselves over £100,000 per year as well as help to bring down the levels of greenhouse gas emissions.

It’s also worth remembering that during a time of recession small businesses could use £100,000 in a much more useful way such as investing in sales, marketing and product development than throwing it away on utility bills.

Let’s take a brief look at how putting just a few simple steps in place can help optimise your company’s efficiency and save you money:

1. When not being used all office equipment should be switched-off. This includes overnight, weekends, bank holidays. Switching-off just one computer and monitor could save you up to £35.00 per year.

2. Switching off lights in empty rooms and using energy efficient light bulbs could save your company up to 15%.

3. Constantly dripping taps could cost your business a further £400.00 a year. So ensuring you turn taps off fully or spending a little to get a tap fixed could save you a lot of money.

4. Partnering with other businesses to recycle waste or selling it to be used as raw materials could save you 4% of your annual turnover with waste management techniques such as this.

5. Your company could save 8% on your company’s heating bill by simply turning down the thermostat by a single degree!

6. Save up to a month’s worth of fuel over a year with smarter driving techniques such as reducing load and good vehicle maintenance.

7. Invest in efficient equipment to help cut your energy, transport and water costs. It is also worth bearing in mind that the government are running an interest-free energy efficient loans through the Carbon Trust.

8. Refill inkjet cartridges instead of buying new ones. Refilling old cartridges in printers, fax machines and photocopiers is a fraction of the cost of buying them brand new. In addition to this use email where possible and if you do need to print out documents try setting your computer to print double-sided to reduce the amount of paper used.

9. Publicise your company’s commitment to reducing your environmental impact as more than a third of customers will usually favour recyclable products or those with minimal packaging.

10. Some suppliers offer “take-back” schemes for unused products. You may be able to get some money back for them.

Thanksgiving was a busy day in household kitchens around Petaluma. Given the overwhelming public response to the plea for Turkey donations (See Petaluma Fills The COTS Turkey Gap!), I decided to slip out early to visit the staff and volunteers at the Petaluma Kitchen to see how they were doing.

At 8:30 a.m. they were more than busy–preparing to serve 180 complete turkey dinners with all the trimmings, plus pie. COTS Food Service Coordinator, Don Louvier advised that the Mary Isaak Center was also preparing to serve 100 turkey dinners.

I managed to squeeze in and get a few photos without disturbing (I hope) their efforts…
