Two songs from this movie have been discussed in the past. Here is the third song from this movie.

This song is sung by Mukesh and it is picturised on Shekhar who is seen wooing/ appeasing a sulking Mala Sinha with two servants helping his case by utteing “haan memsaab” and “ji memsaab” periodically.

Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

I am unable to identify the two actors playing the servants. Likewise I am unable to identify these voices too. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw more light on these matters.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Nitin Shah.

As many as seven songs from this movie have already been discussed in the past. That leaves two more songs from this movie to be discussed.

Here is one of these two songs. This song is sung by Rajkumari. It is picturised as a “roothhna -manaana” song on Geeta Bali and Raj Kapoor. Most songs of this genre show the lady sulking and the gentleman making reconciliatory noises. Here the roles are reversed. My observation on the usual Roothna -manaana songs is that the sulking lady begins to respond by the penultimate line of the last stanza of the song. My observations seemingly gets validated in this song too.

Kidar Sharma is the lyricist. Music is composed by Roshan.

I have discussed one song from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This song is sung by Rafi. This song is picturised as a lovers tiff cum reconciliation song. The picturisation shows Joy Mukherji and Komal walking on foot carrying their luggages. apparently they could not get a public conveyance. This song in fact reminds me of the famous song Itni naazuk na bano(Vaasna) where Vishwajeet was seen lecturing Kumud Chhugani about being strong enough to be able to carry her luggage while he himself was carrying an empty suitcase ! In this song the duo are carrying even lighter luggage, namely handbags that apparently have nothing inside them . And unlike Kumud Chhugaani, Komal (now Mrs Shatrughan Sinha and the mother of Sonakshi sinha) is quite well built, so Joy Mukherji cannot even comment on her being “naazuk”, so he decided to take the line of least resistance and makes reconciliaroty noises in this song. well that is a figure of speech, and the song is quite melodious in fact.

The song is sung by Rafi. Noor Devasi is the lyricist. Music is composed by N Datta.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Atif M.

The lyrics for this film are written by Asad Bhopali. The music is composed by Hansraj Behl. In this film, he was assisted by another composer by the name Inder Goel. Now does this name sound familiar? Let’s see if the readers can identify where else and in which context has this name appeared earlier.

The song is a light duet sung by Mukesh and Madhubala Zaveri. It is a song of reconciliation between lovers, sounding almost similar to the phrase “kiss and make up”. Yes, the lines reflect this thought, as one hears ‘Sab Shikwey Mitey Dil Ke, Aapas Mein Galey Mil Ke’. Enjoy this light hearted duet, composed by Hansraj Behl.

Hansraj Behl made his composing debut in Hindi films, in the year 1946. As per records, his first film released is ‘Pujaari’ (1946). In the same year, two more films were also released with music composed by him. these are ‘Phulwaari’ and ‘Gvaalan’. Rare films in their own rights, and very little is known about them. This delightful song is from the film ‘Gvaalan’, sung by Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa).

About the film, it is produced under the banner of Amar Pictures, and is directed by Baburao Patel. The music is composed by Hansraj Behl and the lyrics are by Pt. Indra. The star cast listing includes Sushila Rani, Trilok Kapoor, Bipin Gupta, Madhuri, Sheikh Hussain, Bikram Kapoor, David, Noorjehaan, Master Ratan, Shanta Kumari, Altaaf Hussain, Karan Singh, Nagendra, Pt. Iqbal, Yusuf etc.

An interesting fact about Zohrabai. As we see the names of lyricists and authors, a lot of them have the name of a place, as part of their pen name – Aarzoo Lucknawi (from Lucknow), Hasrat Jaipuri (from Jaipur), Majrooh Sultanpuri (from Sultanpur) and so on. No other category of artists associated with films have such names that include the name of a place. In the category of singers, two names come to mind, both from the decade of 40s. One is Amirbai Karnataki, and the second is Zohrabai Ambaalewaali. Regarding the latter, there is a specific reason that the name of her home town was added to her name. (She was born in the city of Ambala, formerly in the state of Punjab, now in the state of Haryana). In the 1920s / 30s / 40s, there is another very well known classical singer by the same name Zohrabai. This singer hailed from the city of Agra, belonged to the Agra Gharaana of classical musicians and was famous as Zohrabai Agra (or Zohrabai Agrewaali). She had started her musical career in the 1920s, whereas Zohrabai, the films singer came to be known only in the 1940s. However, to remove any situation of confusion on account of the first name, Zohrabai, the films singer adopted the name Zohrabai Ambaalewaali (or Zohrabai Ambaalaa). The other lady, Zohrabai Agrewaali, never did sing for the films.

This song is another exchange between lovers. The gentleman appears to be offended about something, and the lady is singing a song trying to appease him, and to catch his attention, asking him to look towards her; and that this life and this time of youth will not be forever. The music has a swift pace, and an endearing flavor to it. Enjoy.

kis baat pe tuley ho, rootthe ho meharbaan
dekho zaraa idhar bhi, jaltaa hai aashiaan

O my kind dear,
What has upset you?
Why are you so adamant? (in being offended)
Kindly, just glance my way also
My heart is troubled too (on seeing you upset)

tum ho qaraar dil ke, armaan zindagi ke
khwaab-o-bahaar aayee, aa jaaye na khizaan

You are the comfort of my heart
And the hope in this life
(With you) the life is a dream of spring
Pray that the autumn does never come this way
(on seeing you upset)

nazron se dil churaa ke, nazron se na giraa
rehti nahin kisi ki, zaalim jawaaniyaan

You have stolen my heart with your glances
Do not let me down in your eyes
The times of youth, they will not be forever
(o dear do not be upset)

le lo duaa’en dil ki, din hain yehi sanam
ye husn dar pe aa ke, jaaye kahaan kahaan

Take the blessings, the good wishes of my heart
These are the days (of our happiness and love)
Now that I am at your doorstep
Wherefore else can I now go
(please do not be upset)

In Hindi movies, there are songs for all occasions including songs meant to assuage the hurt feeling

In Hindi movies, there are songs for all occasions including songs meant to assuage the hurt feelings of the beloved. Now, how can one go about assuaging the hurt felings of one’s beloved ? The common and gentlemanly method is to say sorry. But then Hindi movie heroes (like Government employees) can never see the errors of their ways and cannot say sorry. Even when they say sorry then do not mean it. In a railway station, one listens to the announcement saying ” The train is running late. We are sorry for the inconvenience”. The announcer hardly sounds sorry while making this announcement.

In this song, the hero does not even say sorry. From the lyrics of the song, it would seem to me that the lady, instead of feeling assuaged, should feel like salt is being rubbed to her wounds. For instance, the lyrics say

Tukde hain mere dil ke
ae yaar tere aansoo
dekhe nahin jaate hain
dildaar tere aansoo
tukde hain mere dil ke
ae yaar tere aansoo

the drops of your tears are pieces of my broken heart
I cannot bear to see them

Now, the drops of her tears should be equivalent to pieces of her broken heart. She is shedding tears because her heart is broken because of some act of the hero, so the hero claiming that drops of her tears = pieces of his broken heart is clearly a falsehood.

Now I know why the heroes of Hindi movies sing songs using heavy duty words like “qatre” and “”ashq” etc, instead of just saying sorry. By using such heavy duty words, that clealy goes over the head of the lady, they avoid saying sorry to her, and at the same time end up sounding apologetic to her, even when they are clearly not so.
.
This song is sung by Rafi. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by O P Nayyar.

The song is picturised on Vishwajeet and Asha Parekh. Lyrics of the song were sent to me by nahm.

“Amar” (1954) is a movie starring Dilip Kumar and Madhubala. This movie had several songs that became quite popular. I have discussed five songs from this movie in the past.

Here is another song from this movie which I became aware of only after nahm sent its lyrics to me.

This song is what one can describe as a reconciliation song or “sulking-appeasing” song, just that the roles are reversed. Here Dilip Kumar is sulking and Madhubala tries to humour him by songing this song.

My study shows that in the usual songs of “sulking appeasing” genre, the lady remains in the sulking mode till the penultimate line i the last stanza, and then she begins to respond to hero’s advances. But here in this song, Dilip Saab continues to sulk right till the end of the song. May be that is how it is supposed to be in sulking appeasing songs with roles reversed. Obviously more study is required to be undertaken in this field.

This song is sung by Lata. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist and music is composed by Naushad.

If one creates one or two masterpiece songs in a movie that I suppose the creators of such songs in that movie could be justified in taking it easy while creating the remaining songs. But that is not how they worked in the (G)olden days. The created one gem after another in the same movie, as if this was the last movie of their careers. And they continued it for their other movies as well for their entire careers that lasted a few decades. and then there were many others who worked in the same way. No wonder we are left with a huge body of quality music that we can keep exploring for decades, without being able to exhaust it.

Take this movie “Aaraam” (1951) for example. I have already discussed 7 songs from it. Certainly 7 great songs from a movie is good enough. But no, that is not all. There are more great songs in it ! Yes, seriously.

Here is this lovely song from Lata. This “roothna -manaana” (sulking-appeasing) song is sung by Lata. It is picturised on Madhubala and Dev Anand. Both are sulking, but here the lady takes the initiative to offer the olive branch. How very cute !

The song is written by Prem Dhawan. Music is created by Anil Biswas. I have heard this song for the first time only just now, and I loved it on the very first “hear” itself. Yes, that is what timeless music is often all about. Listen to it for the first time six decades after it is created, and you still find it fresh as a morning dew. This is a song that will certainly make the day of the listeners.

“Madhosh”(1951) is a movie that had Manhar Desai, Meena Kumari and Usha Kiran in lead roles. Talat Mehmood sung for Manhar Desai, whereas Lata sang for both the leading ladies. Thankfully the two leading ladies did not sing a duet together, else we do not know what the music directors would have done.
I have discussed five songs from this movie till now. Here is another song from this movie. In this song, Manhar comes to meet Meena Kumari after making her wait. When Meena Kumari remonstrates, Manhar sulks and walks away. Then Meena Kumari sings this song in a bid to mollify him.

I am told that 8 december is the birthday of not one but two actors. Yes, both Dharmendra (DOB- dec 8, 1935) and Sharmila Tagore (DOB 8 dec 1946) were born on this date.
A few regulars of this blog had reminded me of this fact and suggested a few somhs that could be posted on this occasion.

Yes, there are several songs picturised on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore. I have discussed a few such songs already in the past, but there are still songs that have not yet been discussed. So I have enough material for today, which will be devoted to songs picturised on Dharmendra and Sharmila Tagore.

Here is a son from ‘Mere Hamdam Mere Dost” (1968) which is the secnd movie where the two came together (“Anupama” being the first).

This is a “roothhna-manaanaa” genre of song where Sharmila Tagore is shown trying to appease a sulking Dharmendra.

The song is sung by Lata.Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist and music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

On an unrelated note, this song is the 1100th Lata song in this blog.

Here is a lovely heartwarming song that I have heard for several decades, and all this while I was totally unaware about the details of this song.

This song is “tadpaaoge tadpaalo”. Now I know that this iconic song is from a movie called “Barkha” (1957). The song is sung by Lata and it is picturised on Shubha Khote and Anant Kumar.

Rajinder Krishan, whom I regard as the person who has perhaps written the maximum number of iconic lyrics, has penned this wonderful song. Chitragupta, the underestimated low profile music director has composed this wonderful song.

Song-Tadpaaoge tadpaalo (Barkhaa) (1957) Singer-Lata,Lyrics-Rajinder Krishan, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics

tadpaaoge tadpaa lo
ham tadap tadap kar bhi
tumhaare geet gaayenge
thukraaoge thukraa lo
ham thokar khaa kar bhi
tumhaare dar pe aayenge
tadpaaoge tadpaa lo

kab tak jaanegaa naa chandaa
dard chakori kaa
kab tak jaanegaa naa chandaa
dard chakori kaa
bewafaa pyaar mein
kab talaq ye pardaa
tadpaaoge tadpaa lo
ham tadap tadap kar bhi
tumhaare geet gaayenge
tadpaaoge tadpaa lo

“Raaja” (1975) was a movie starring Rishi Kapoor and Sulakshana Pandit, but the movie turned out to be a flop. Perhaps public only wanted to see Rishi Kapoor with Neetu Singh, and Sulakshana Pandit could not be a suitable replacement.
The songs of this movie were quite nice though. I have already posted a few songs from this movie. Here is a song sung by Asha Bhonsle which is picturised on Sulakshana Pandit trying to appease a sulking Rishi Kapoor. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist and RT D Burman composed the music.

I have posted as many as ten songs from “Andaaz” already. Unbelievably, not one of these ten songs was a duet song between hero and heroine in this movie. Most songs were solo songs, except one, which was sung by two female singers ( Lata and Shamshad Begum).

There was in fact one duet song in this movie. And it was not picturised on Dilip Kumar and Nargis. Rather it was picturised on Raj Kapoor and Nargis. Lata sang for Nargis whereas Rafi sang for Raj Kapoor. Yes, Rafi too sang in this movie.

This song is a lesser known song from this movie. I listened to this for song the first time only just now. Majrooh Sultanpuri wrote this song and Naushad was the music director.
