I guess when it comes to giving Mick Jagger a present, you got to think the guy has just about everything.
I mean what could you possibly give him he either couldn’t buy himself or doesn’t already own?
Clothes. Nah.
Wine. Boring.
Hmmmmmm, how ’bout a nice watch?

Well that’s exactly what Ahmet Ertegun gave Mick Jagger back
sometime in the early 70’s.
An Eterna Matic Concept 80 wristwatch.
He had engraved on the back, Mick Here’s to a Million or 2? Ahmet.
My guess he was talking about the sales of an upcoming album.
Maybe Sticky Fingers or Exile given the time period.
Since at this point The Stones had just recently come on board with Atlantic, it’s not unusual Ahmet was hoping for a long and successful relationship with them.

Ahmet co-founder and executive of Atlantic Records used his personal skills in negotiating the signing of The Rolling Stones to Atlantic when they were shopping for a record company to distribute their independent Rolling Stones Records label.

He personally “did the deal” with Mick Jagger, when other labels had actually offered the band more money.

This watch was later donated by Jagger to an auction run by LA radio station KMET-FM back in 1973 in a week long auction they ran to raise money for the victims of the Nicaraguan Earthquake.
Mick was of course married to Bianca at the time, and her having family there got Mick very involved in this worthy cause.

The Stones gave a benefit concert in LA and donated at the proceeds to help the victims.

Het zuidoosten van Australië gaat gebukt onder een hittegolf. Het is er nog nooit zo warm geweest in deze tijd van het jaar. Dat meldde de Wereld Meteorologische Organisatie, de afdeling van de VN die zich bezighoudt met het weer, gisteren.

In het noordwesten van de staat New South Wales was het onlangs bijna 47 graden Celsius. Het oude record stond sinds november 1944, toen het kwik 46 graden bereikte. In de miljoenenstad Adelaide was het acht novemberdagen achter elkaar meer dan 35 graden. Het oude record voor november stond op vier achtereenvolgende dagen boven deze grens.

Een bijkomend probleem is dat het niet koud wordt in het gebied. Enkele dagen geleden werd op het vliegveld van het plaatsje White Cliffs midden in de nacht nog een temperatuur van 33,3 graden gemeten. Nog nooit lag de minimumtemperatuur er in november, aan het begin van de Australische zomer, zo hoog.

En in Nederland? Daar blijft de herfstmotor nog enkele dagen op volle toeren draaien.

Justo antes de tomar el avion que la llevaria a Argentina la cantante mexicana Fey ofrecio un pequeño show case para sus fans, interpretando sus nuevos exitos “Provocame” y “Lentamente”, cabe señalar que el evento se realizo en las instalaciones de la Loteria Nacional en la ciudad de Mexico y fue completamente gratis. Fey esta a punto de iniciar su gira “Dulce Tentacion” en el teatro Astral en Argentina los dias 9 y 10 de diciembre. Fans argentinos no se olviden de hacer mucho ruido y de apoyar a esta gran artista!

Como en el 2008, Liga y Fluminense mañana se volverán a encontrar

Anticipando lo que será el primer partido de la final de la Copa Sudamericana, mañana entre la Liga de Quito y Fluminense -en una reedición de la Libertadores 2008-, recordemos las otras cinco goleadas que quedan. También cinco fueron los años que tardó la Liga ecuatoriana en superar a San Lorenzo y adjudicarse el “primer puesto” en el ranking, con un contundente 7-0 sobre el River uruguayo… La pregunta, entonces, aparece: Cuánto tiempo tardará el próximo en volverla a superar?

Eso, por lo pronto, no es posible saberlo. Igualmente, y mientras tanto, aquí están las cinco goleadas pendientes de este ránking de las actuaciones con más tantos en la historia de la Sudamericana…

6. Boca Juniors (Arg) 5-1 Cerro Porteño (Par)

Sería el dueño de esa Sudamericana –la del 2005- y no podía quedarse sin su triunfo histórico, el de la goleada en el especial del Campeón. El lugar elegido fue la provincia de Salta y el conjunto xeneize se jugaba su pase a cuartos, tras empatar en Paraguay por 2 a 2. El equipo se agrandó y mostró aquello que, tiempo después, lo coronaría campeón, con goles de Martín Palermo, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, Neri Cardozo, Federico Insúa… y hasta del defensor Juan Krupoviesa.

7. Atlético Mineiro (Bra) 2-5 Botafogo (Bra)

No son clásico, pero siempre un choque brasileño genera expectativas de sobra, en cualquier instancia y, más aún, si es eliminatoria. Lo que estaba en juego, en este encuentro de la Copa ’08, era el pase a octavos y los del país verdeamarhelo no desentonaron. Al menos, los del conjunto de Río de Janeiro, que ya habían hecho tres goles en la ida, y, en la vuelta, quisieron cerrar su pase con un par de goles más. Por las dudas, vió…

Segunda fase otra vez, versión 2006 de nuevo, pero con actores distintos. Ésta vez, la goleada total se producía entre las fronteras de Colombia y México y con un global que aparentaba ser bastante parejo: Tolima había vencido por 2 a 1 en el duelo de ida y, a la vuelta, los mexicanos se tomaron revancha. ¿Los goles? Paul Aguilar, Juan Carlos Cacho, Aquivaldo Mosquera, Andrés Chitiva y Marvín Cabrera, para la goleada final, que contó, además, con una gran actuación -2 pases gol- del argentino Christian el Chaco Giménez.

9. Trujillanos (Ven) 1-5 Atlético Nacional (Col)

Esta gran goleada tuvo como escenario Maracaibo y fueron los once del conjunto de Medellín los que plantaron bandera y ofrecieron cinco tantos en la ida del encuentro de primera ronda de la Sudamericana ‘05. En la vuelta, el equipo colombiano –actualmente dirigido por el ex DT de Lanús, Ramón Cabrero-  no se conformó y decidió liquidar la serie en 2-0.

10. San Lorenzo de Almagro (Arg)  5-1 Monagas SC (Ven)

Eran los tiempos del Lobo Cordone, del Potro Astudillo y del Beto Acosta… Definitivamente, este encuentro tiene que volver un poco más atrás en el tiempo, a los años del San Lorenzo de Rubén Insúa y a la primera edición de la Copa Sudamericana (2002). Edición que se quedaría en manos del equipo de Boedo y que ficharía esta primera serie como la de mayor contundencia goleadora del título cuervo, con un global de 8 a 1.

What’s the future of music industry? Hmm…

When we initally started working on this project, we were on wrong track. We started coming up with weird ideas like, there will be music when we strum the air, there wouldn’t be a need for musical instruments, soundwaves will be travelling in the air. . . I know. Have a good laugh.

But after much thought and research, we realised that we were on the wrong track. Such ‘amazing’ things would not happen just 3 to 5 years down the road. It had to relate to what was going on now. Hence we analysed..

In the beginning years, sheet music was being introduced, followed by music records. But right now, everyone is downloading music online from file sharing applications such as Ares, Limewire, Kazaa and more. These are illegal!  But on the contrary…

Recently, a new software has been launched called ‘Spotify’ which is legal. Through this software, one can listen to free streaming of songs. However, there will be advertisements that will be played in the midst. This software is now available in a few phones from Nokia, Samsung and Sony ericsson. Enjoy!

There was more that I learnt while working for this project. There is a website called MySpace where junior artists like you and me can create albums and upload them online for the public to hear. The famous singer Colbie Caillat had record companies knocking on her door only after she showcased her talent on MySpace! Who knows, tomorrow it might be me. =)

So in future, relating back to the problem about people downloading songs online rather than buying cds, probably there might not be any record production. Instead, all tracks might just be uploaded online for downloading. You may still have to pay though due to the digital and legal downloading of tracks. You can digitally download tracks from iTunes.

The music trend sure is evolving from time to time.

Llargs dies d’estiu passats de sol a sol, anant de casa de l’un a casa de l’altre, vivint les experiències més apassionants —anar amb la bicicleta un carrer més enllà ens ho semblava—, entrant a casa només a les hores dels àpats i, perquè no hi havia cap més remei, per anar a dormir. Eren diumenges de platja i tardes d’excursions a llocs amb noms que ara ens semblen tan comuns però que llavors eren promeses d’aventures fantàstiques: la Cova, l’Esplanada, el Camí de l’Home Mort… I eren, sobretot, dijous de sessió doble al cinema del poble, al teatre tronat del casino, que feia olor de pols i de crispetes i de vellut vell. La sessió de dijous era la dels petits i les mares; els grans hi anaven dissabte a la nit. Eren pel·lícules per a tots els públics, passades de moda ja quan arribaven allà; sovint, l’operador s’equivocava i vèiem primer la segona part de la pel·lícula, però ens era igual: era estiu, era dijous, érem al cinema. I entre pel·lícula i pel·lícula no podia faltar anar a fer cua a la parada de llaminadures. Anar-hi dissabte a la nit era un ritual de pas; sense dir-t’ho, et demostraven que t’havies «fet gran»; tan era que no t’hi deixessin anar sol: havies anat a la sessió dels grans i havies vist una pel·lícula «per a grans» —Excalibur, Excalibur era una pel·licula per a grans i sortir de veure-la i contemplar la lluna sortir de darrere d’un núvol esfilagarsat, viure la màgia del cinema. No sé què va acabar abans, si les nostres ganes d’anar a veure pel·lícules melindroses en un teatre atrotinat o la programació dels dijous. Però de mica en mica anaren desapareixent les sessions dobles i els cinemes de barri, i aquelles grans sales on ningú respirava fins al «The End». Eren altres temps.

HERE COMES THE BREAK!

Wow…the next three years were pivotal. For me, and many others, these were some of the best in part because of the emergence of funky breaks and in 1994 there were two records for me that summed it up best. First, the huge bass heavy sound of the Dust Brothers’ “Chemical Beats” (we now know them as the Chemical Brothers). There is no doubt this track helped guide the slower, groovier break scene to the spotlight. There is still another that has just stuck with me for years as being the sickest of 1994, a track off Jim Hopkins’ Twitch label and produced by artists Courtney Nielsen & DJ Spun under the name Central Fire. I included both versions of the track “Central Fire (Yes People It’s Time: Part 1 & 2).” Part 1 is especially good and it brings back great memories of some bad ass years in dance music.

BTW, can I tell you now that 1995 is going to be near impossible…so much good music came out it won’t be easy to narrow it down to one.

MATTRESS “Low Blows” – MALT DUCK RECORDS – LP 14.00 – Limitierte handnummerierte Auflage von 500 Stück auf klarsichtigem Vinyl. MATTRESS ist das Ein-Mann-Projekt von Rex Marshall aus Portland, den man kurz gesagt als den „Tom Waits des Minimal-Synth“ bezeichnen könnte. MERCURY PROGRAM “Chez Viking” – LOVITT RECORDS – LP 10.50 – Nach einer 6-jährigen Pause meldet sich auch diese Band wieder. 7 neue Stücke befinden sich auf der Platte (inklusive Download-Gutschein). SLITS “Trapped Animals” – NARNACK RECORDS – 2xLP 20.50 – Neues Album (als Doppel-LP mit CD-Beilage) der reformierten SLITS, und obwohl zwei Original-Mitglieder dabei sind, hätte man es wohl besser “Ari Up & The New Slits” genannt… Über eine technisch versiertere und etwas modernere Version, die erstaunlich ähnlich klingt wie die SLITS, kann man nicht viel Schlechtes sagen. Aber hier hört man NICHTS(!) von der frischen und frechen Originalität, dem kreativen Spirit oder der Fuck-All Attitüde, welche die SLITS zu einer der bedeutendsten und einflussreichsten Bands der Musikgeschichte gemacht haben. Wer das erfahren will, sollte lieber bei der “Cut” LP von 1979 bleiben, denn hier bekommt man nichts davon mit!

For the third year in a row, I will make the rounds procuring records on Black Friday.  This year, however, I’m inviting anyone to join.  (And trust me, if you think I’m giving out trade secrets, I could give you a running start and still beat you to the choice records.)

I’m giving you my itinerary, so you can meet up at any point along the way.

1. We will start at Benetti’s Coffee Experience at 6:00 for caffeination.  We’ll leave for Half Price Books in Westport.  Although it opens at 7:00, we”ll arrive around 6:30 because there was a really long line last year.  The store hands out bags with $5 gift cards and coupons.  The store has a 20% off sale the entire day, and one lucky person in that first 100 gets a gift card for $100.
2. Next, we’ll stop at Mama’s 39th Street Diner for breakfast.  They have the best omelettes and pancakes in town, so we have to go.  I might even get some of their amazing carrot cake, too.
3. After breakfast, we’re going to Streetside Records.  The store has been selling used records for a while now, but I got wind that it’s fallen into a serious stash of music that will be “priced to sell.”  It opens at 9:00.

So yeah, see you bright and early on Friday!

As I am writing this I am listening to Dirty Money’s song Angels (Remix) feturing Assim. I can truly say I like the first verse by the the featured mc and the part of the track that he spits on. Viqueens QB Brett Favre moved closer to yet another NFL record on Sunday, getting sacked twice to bring his career total to 490. John Elway is the current record holder, having been sacked a grand total of 516 times. Dave Kreig, a native of Iola, Wisconsin (population 1,243), is currently in second place with 494.

Favre’s in third.

With six games remaining, Favre needs fewer than one sack per game to move into second place; 4.5 per game to take over the all-time NFL record. So come on, offensive line! Help him out!

Favre also extended his existing records in attempts, completions, passing yards, touchdowns (suck it, Manning!) and starts. But that’s it. Ho hum.

Ah Mistabishi, it has been way too long. Although this may be his last release on Hospital Records after his pseudo-DJing scandal at Bassment presents Hospitality at Bar Mango. Personally, I could care less whether he DJ’s live or not at a set. There is a certain tinge of authenticity that comes with live mixing, as long as the tunes are good and nobody can see, who will notice? Although this clearly wasn’t the case at Hospitality. He even released a previously unreleased track on breakbeat.co.uk

In any case, the two tracks featured on one of the latest Hospital releases are absolutely wonderful, with a hint of weird not previously featured on Hospital or any label for that matter. The first track is Matrix’s remix of ‘From Memory’ from the album Drop. It’s an eerie sounding, almost euphoric cut of the song. The male and female voices are capped in such a way that gives it a soulful feeling unmatched by anybody else. It’s quite an oddball of a song.

The second track is aptly called ‘I Feel LOL’ and rightly so. It’s a bouncy tune with a female synthesized type of voice. It features a seemingly teenage idea of love with quite a few curses that do indeed bring the LOL. It’s a neat little track, yet at about 3:30 into the tracker it goes through a bunch of speed changes and the last minute or two finishes out at at least 1/2 speed. It really could have been better without the slowdown.

In any case, it’s a must have for any collection.
