Blue Skies Ahead!

In my daily work, I sometimes wonder where I’ll “end up” on this road of Life.  I have wonderful, creative, intelligent friends and colleagues to work with, and they often ask me and themselves the same question.  It’s a new road; one with different ground, covered with what may – or may not be… acres of opportunities for personal and professional growth.  Many of us may never have the prestige, status, job title, postion, or salary that we once had when we ran for our lives on the old road – but truthfully, I’m not complaining as much anymore.  I’ve met so many diverse and intelligent individuals that I would have never known before I found this route – which is really not as much of a route, or a destination as I would have once described it at all.  I have experienced some of the most fulfilling adventures I’ve not paid for, or been paid for…does that make sense?  and for some of them, I don’t believe I would accept compensation for it, even if possible. 

Before this year, it had been a long time since I’d left work at the end of the day and said, “Today, they didn’t have to pay me for doing this job!” 

Some of the stops along this road have become pleasant destinations, some short, some I hope will be long-term, but where ever I end up, with the help of friends, family and strangers, I’ll be fine.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to return the favours and opportunities presented to me in the same way, or – this being a really different road, a different way…but after the many kindnesses given to me,  the generous compassion, empathy and yes – help and assistance given freely to me at the exact time I needed it, how can I do anything else accept hope for an opportunity to reciprocate these actions as needed.

And so, we just keep on walking, running, stopping for a break, helping someone else up, allowing and accepting help from others (whether we want to, or know how to!), and living our lives as we continue to walk carefully in this strange, new world.  

But, be careful of the strange, new sights that can distract you along the way as well!    Not all New and Improved Options are Good!

(what else can you say to a teenager or to us as adults as we head out on the road each day?  whenever someone tells me to “have a nice day!”  i begin to worry about a bad day… when someone says “take care!” i begin to become fearful of being careless! and really, what other actions can make the biggest difference in where you end up in this world than your choices? and i’m leaving the relativity issue around “what are good choices?” to your Mom!  she’ll tell you what’s what!)

The Washington DC Studies Conference this weekend drew several hundred people to wide ranging talks on stories of the nation’s capital.

The event took place in the city’s Charles Sumner School, one of the first public school buildings erected for the education of Washington’s black community.

Presenters ranged from professional historians and architects to long-time residents. Historian Kathryn Smith opened the conference with a discussion of the need to tell local and federal DC stories together. Histories about local people and activities empower residents and convince the citizens in other areas of the country and the world of the value of the place.

Social and community history capture the stories of people in their everyday lives and give us a rich and deep sense of place.

Conferees told of the Berry Farm community and the Underground Railroad little known places.

I learned about the prevalence of particular kinds of crimes in the 19th century and about plans of builders to establish communities with the style of houses they built near the city’s Soldiers Home in the 1910s.

Well, apparently putting out the article yesterday that labels tort reform as “poison” has people in Michigan, and nationwide actually, riled.  That was my top post yesterday, and has remained my top post today, on a Friday, which is a day known as notoriously hard to capture readers.  I even got international hits from my posts lately.  Hooray, I think.  But maybe the news is out that Michigan is suffering an image problem.  (But, I am not the first one to point that out.)   As you know, I have gone through a series of featuring Michigan personalities, artists, politicians, and I have just started moving through the courts/political systems.  The responses to Michigan’s tort reforms, birthed by the former governor John Engler, who now has self-listed Michigan as a “top business state” (posted about this yesterday Tort Reforms in MI) are vitriolic.

Summary:  Michigan business bedroom fellows mixed with the Republicans with the idea of giving businesses legal breaks to “encourage” businesses to want to come to Michigan to invest in Michigan’s economy, which judging by the forecasted 25%unemployment rate here, was a spectacular failure. Businesses and Republican politicians just took advantage of legal loopholes and still decimated Michigan’s economy.  Now lots of investigations are taking place to determine which businesses dumped unseemly amounts of cash into Republican campaigns in exchange for kickbacks and laws favoring their industries.

Great, apparently all elders, in their back-woods desperation to strike it rich, paid the businesses to come to Michigan, gave them unfair and maybe illegal breaks (like not investigating their campaign funding histories and not enforcing the law, Old White Man’s Club overlooking a few things) and now Michigan’s economy is bleeding uncontrollably and corruption investigations abound.  Wonderful.

The facts speak for themselves as Michigan tops the unemployment rates nationwide.  The medical care has gotten worse in this state as bad doctors aren’t removed by being held responsible in the courts (so now all the bad doctors flock to ole Michigan here where they won’t get caught), and insurance companies don’t have to pay for the care of mentally impaired children.  Makes you proud to be here, doesn’t it?  I had been so excited about Michigan’s prospects when looking at its artists, bu now looking at the politicians, the shit is about to hit the fan.  Spectacular.

In latest horse racing picks, Howard Johnson hopes a breathing operation can help Tidal Bay return to his best at Aintree on Saturday.

His stable star runs in the tote ten to follow Old Roan Chase and the trainer is expecting a big run.

“We are looking forward to getting Tidal Bay back on the racecourse. We had him hobdayed through the summer and we are hoping that has tidied him up. I would say at the minute that he will probably be our standard bearer this year,” said Johnson with sports betting community.

“He jumped a few fences indoors on Monday morning and looked good. He’ll school outdoors if it keeps drizzling like it is now and he will have a piece of work with Denis O’Regan up, probably on Tuesday. If I’m happy and the ground is alright, we’ll go to Aintree.

“He is training well and we’ll weigh him on Wednesday. He actually looks like he’s carrying a lot more condition this year, which is good because he always looks Gorky.”

Johnson is pleased with the form of his stable at present, which boasts a 33% strike rate this month, with nine wins from 27 runners.

He said: “The horses in horse racing betting generally are alright, I’m happy enough with them, it’s just that we haven’t been able to get on the grass yet. The ground has been too firm and the racecourses don’t help us trainers in the north east because they won’t let us work our horses on the tracks.”

Let’s be honest.  Right now you have a terrible swing.  Everything is wrong.  I am not writing this to make you feel bad or to build my ego.  We need to admit where we are so we can begin to move forward.

If you’ve read any of the golf magazines or started any how to book about golf, then you’ve already realized that just about everything you do is wrong.  Still do you understand all the slang, advice and corrective information?

Grip

The experts tell us to use one of two favored grips.  Both involve overlapping the fingers of the right and left hands.  We can place the little finger of the bottom hand over the index finger of the top hand or we can reverse the two fingers.  Whenever I do that my little finger is in pain for days afterward.  TRUTH!

Next we must put the club so far down in our fingers that our palm almost doesn’t touch the club any more.  Did you ever wonder how anyone manages to hold onto the club as they swing?

Do you even know what they are talking about when they say a strong grip?  Does that mean lift weights?  Is a weak grip something for children and sissies?

By the way, in any other activity involving holding and swinging a stick at anything do you overlap your hands?  Baseball, hockey, swinging an ax, using a hoe?

Stance

Get you weight balanced on the balls of your feet.  Bend your knees slightly keeping your back straight and bend forward.  Keep your forward shoulder lower than your back shoulder.   Oh! And whatever you do don’t move your head!  Huh!!??

Alignment

You are supposed to align your feet parallel to the target line.  Your ball starts out way over there and curves all the way across the fairway to some other place.  Does it really matter?  Wouldn’t it be better to aim so the ball lands in play?

Ball Position

The ball should be a comfortable distance away from you allowing you to maintain all the correct stance conditions.  The ball should be somewhere between the big toe of your left foot and the big toe of your right foot.  Do you know where?

Take Away

The club comes away without breaking the wrists in a one piece motion.  At ninety degrees the toe of the club should point straight up and the shaft should be parallel to the target line.  At the top the shaft should again be parallel to the target line and the toe should point where?

Over The Top/Casting/Swing From The Outside

I am over the top right now, I am going fly casting for trout and I will definitely be outside.  What does all of this mean?

Slice/Draw

Tiger hits the ball on the back inside corner.  Humor me, I know that round balls don’t have corners.  You hit it on the back outside corner.  That is about ½ inch difference on a ball that is a little over 1 inch.

I am so tired of this useless harping, that I am going to slice up my clubs with a hack saw!  Do I have to draw a picture, I am frustrated!

Bail Out

Where is the plane?  I am so out of here!  Okay, I added bail out, but there is a reason.

Follow Through

You should finish with your chest facing the target and almost all of your weight on your front foot.  The club should be all the way around you over your front shoulder. 

This is what I meant by bailing out.  You end up falling backwards because there is almost no weight on your front foot.  You look just like a person bailing out of an airplane.

The golf swing looks beautiful when somebody else does it, but you feel as likely to make it happen as you are to dance ballet or ice skate in the Olympics.  You think you enjoy this game, but every time you think about the swing you want to quit. Who has time to even hit the ball?
Please Don’t Quit – There Is An Answer

If you are like many of us you came to golf from some other sport.  Unfortunately golf isn’t like the other sports we are used to.  It is easy to see the ball and the swing and thing baseball or hockey.  Golf is much more like bowling, darts, or basketball. 

A baseball batter has a 90 degree arc between the foul lines and can make the ball land anywhere between the lines, even out of the park.  At the foul poles there are several hundred feet of space to land the ball in. 

We have two parallel lines that are roughly as far apart as first and second base.  Then we are expected to land the ball within a few feet of a target with each different club.

Remember I hit my 7 iron about 150 yards.  That is farther than most home runs travel in the major leagues.  My driver goes twice as far as most home runs and I still only have the distance from first to second base to land in.

Oh! And out of the park in this sport is a penalty stroke.  This is a different game.  Discard any thoughts that come from other sports.

You have to retrain your mind and your body how to play this game.  All those terms I mentioned before are all real and important.  Unfortunately, you can’t learn how to put them all together in just a few minutes.

Like so many of us, you are not going to see the pro, so what are you going to do?

Well first of all, don’t go out and spend several hundred dollars on brand new big name golf clubs.  You can butcher a shot with a $30 dollar club just as well as with a $300 club.  While you are learning put your money into training materials and aides.

Fortunately, there are several proven e-books, videos, and training aides out there.  What they require to make you more successful is your patience and diligent practice. 

Pick one book or video and one training aide.  Then follow the instructions with those items only.  Don’t read something new in a golf magazine and suddenly switch.
Don’t start listening to your golf buddies and their advice.  Have only one master and follow that plan.

Understand that you are going to work your swing out by changing one or two things at a time.  You won’t add anything new until you’ve mastered the feel of these changes.  If you are like me that is the most comfortable way to learn something new, in small steps.

Depending on your practice and playing time, you are going to see improvement in steps over time.  The professionals didn’t learn this game over night either.  Have patience and just enjoy playing a great game while you learn to play it better.

The Linn Area Mountain Bike Association is hosting a time trial at Beverly Park in Cedar Rapids on October 3, 2009.

The group is also hosting the Iowa International Mountain Bike Association Affiliates the same weekend, so several other events are scheduled. (I’m not sure what that “Affiliates” business is all about. Maybe someone can explain that.)

Snorkeling is a unique water sport. Jolly Buoy, Redskin and Cinque Islands are some sites in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands that offer good scope for snorkeling. If you are not a swimmer and you still want to go into deep waters, then snorkeling is the best choice for you. Just follow the simple instructions of your trainers.

You can snorkel off the beaches. The island of Lakshadweep and Andamans and Nicobar islands are a fantastic snorkel paradise that leaves you with amazing snorkeling experience.

Miles away from pollution, the blue, green waters waves of its seas and oceans present the awesome eye-catching view of the Coral Sea beds.
