Remember to be kind.

In the midst of our hurried or focused moments, allow kindness to prevail.

Saw something posted on Facebook the other week that said “It’s better to be kind than to be right.” Consider that for a moment.

Reflect upon the kindness you share with your coworkers, your spouse/significant other, your kids, pets, strangers in the store, “crazy” drivers on the road, person sitting next to you on the plane, etc.

Sometimes showing kindness takes some work to filter through the frustration or anger or disappointment we’re feeling. Taking that time to filter is well worth it for we may never know how well placed the timing is for that kind moment.

Show kindness to yourself and others. The world needs kindness so much more than meeting deadlines, or pressuring ourselves or kin to excel.

Please – be kind.

Chakra States

By working with individuals and groups through my energy center, Sol Angel, one of the things we focus on during sessions, classes, and meditations is balancing our chakras. As many of us know, our chakras are wheels of energy that keep our bodies, minds, and spirits in balance.

Our chakras are fluid – just as our physical body moves, our emotions flow, and our thoughts race and slow down. Depending upon our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual states, our chakras will react accordingly – their openness differing, speed of spinning, where they face, etc. can all change with a simple thought or deep-seated emotion.

For example, if someone starts berating us for not doing a good job or messing up a project, our solar plexus chakra may typically respond in some fashion. It might spin in a different direction, not spin at all, be partially open or closed, etc.

However if someone who loves us pays us a compliment or simply smiles or gives you a hug – your heart chakra is bound to respond by finding alignment, opening up, rounding out, etc.

We may have been in energy sessions or readings were someone tells us that our chakras are opened or closed, or facing to the side, or not spinning. And that may very well be true. However, while it may have been true at that moment, it does not mean they will stay the way.

Our chakras can be affected by our physical environment, our positive or negative thoughts, and many other factors. Knowing that our chakras are constantly in flux can help us understand how to better work with them for positive results. We can also work to clear our chakras, or notice them and visualize them existing in the most pristine of fashion, so they can positively affect our mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical states as well. The relationship is bi-directional.

That is why chakra balancing meditations are so successful. We are able to adjust the chakras, and work through any energetic “stuff” that may be keeping them from functioning at their topmost level.

If for some reason, our chakras are staying in a specific state for an extended period of time, it may be helpful to have some energy work done (by yourself or a trusted energy practitioner) to clear whatever may be congesting that particular chakra.

Our next blog post on Chakras will be about clearing the chakras.

Chakra Basics

Chakras are wheels of energy that help regulate the energy flow of our body. Similar to the meridians in our body, chakras can become blocked by various factors that prevent them from functioning optimally. Our body is full of chakras – we have main chakras and many, many minor chakras. For the point of brevity I will focus on the seven main chakras that are commonly discussed. The below indicates the physical location of the chakra.

Crown

Third Eye

Throat

Heart

Solar Plexus

Sacral

Root

Each chakra is associated with various physical and emotional aspects. There is plenty of corresponding information on the internet with regard to what each chakra represents and affects, so I will refrain from explaining that here.

The chakras are designed to be positioned in our centerline, along the spine for ease of reference. The crown chakra is facing up above our head and the root chakra faces down to the ground. All the other main chakras have two cone-shaped spirals of energy – one facing and extending out the front of the body, and the other extending out the back of our body. The smallest part of the cones of these chakras meets at the spine.

Healthy chakras are open and spin clockwise. (The ones in the back also spin clockwise.) The “face” of the chakra should be parallel to the body and spinning at a decent rate. This rate will be different for everyone. Each chakra may spin at different rates. Chakra size should be comparable to each other.

Some minor chakras worth mentioning are the navel chakra and the high heart chakra. The navel chakra is positioned between the sacral and the solar plexus chakras; the high heart or thymus chakra is positioned in between the heart and the throat chakra. Minor chakras exist at the body joints as well.

If you want to learn more about your chakra and their health, a great way to start is working with chakra meditations. Regular practice of these meditations and other methods, help us become more sensitive to the our chakras’ energies.

Stay tuned for the next blog post on chakra states.

Discipline is the Refining Fire

To be more exact, self-discipline is the refining fire by which our talent becomes ability. Without it, we remain raw and untapped – our potential never truly realized. Self-discipline gives us that edge – the focus, the will. It sets us on a path and keeps us from taking a wrong turn. Self-discipline is the spark to ignite progress when the flames begin to fade and fire seems to die out. Self-discipline sets us apart from the norm. It keeps us hungry and it builds character. Self-discipline keeps us in the game long after everyone else has gone home or given up.

As the world watches its best athletes compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics, we all witness first-hand what self-discipline can achieve – it achieves greatness. This greatness is not necessarily determined by a gold or silver medal, but the sheer feat of being on an Olympic team. At that moment – win or lose – they are one of the best of the best. Achieved through self-discipline.

As we go through our daily lives, our own self-discipline standards and practices will play a major role in our ability to achieve. Again, it is not the difference between winning and losing, but the difference between who we are now and who we will become tomorrow.

Be the difference!

Today is Your Day

We often hear others who are about to embark on a new direction, a life modification or new perspective that they will begin their adventure tomorrow or the ever popular “Monday” start date. The question always seems to arise – “why not today?” Is today not good enough? Is today too soon to make the first step?

The words of Ben Franklin always seem to ring out making it as true now at it was then: “Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today”. There is no time like the present. To quote a line from the movie Rocky 3, “There is no tomorrow”. Though that may seem harsh and appear to be without hope, it is reality. Tomorrow has yet to be and sadly for some, may never come. Putting something off until tomorrow creates a loop-hole in our commitment – an escape clause – an easy way out.

This is why today is the most important day of our lives. What better time to start something new or different than today? Why would we wait given the reality? Tomorrow never comes to those who choose not to live today. Today is what makes tomorrow worth living for.

Our day is today – seize the day!

Walking Our Path

Once we know what our beliefs are that we’d like to change or discard, we can begin taking action in doing so. There are lots of uncomfortable moments we have in our lives because we don’t agree with what the masses are doing yet fear the social consequences of not following along. If you feel this is happening to you, it’s time to take a stand and be the truth – live our truth.

By keeping our own integrity throughout our day, we are able to sleep better at night and grow more comfortable with who we are. The more we know about ourselves and accept about ourselves, others will too.

So this week, before you lie to rest for the day, recall the times you stood in your truth, whether it was by saying nothing or changing a behavior or thought process. Whatever brought you to walking your own path remember to acknowledge yourself experiencing the joy and gratitude of being who you are.

Celebrate and honor you!

Uncovering Untruths From the moment many of us wake up to the moment we lay our heads on the pillow

Uncovering Untruths

From the moment many of us wake up to the moment we lay our heads on the pillow for rest – have we ever considered the untruths we may have told that day? Perhaps we told our spouse that the shirt we just bought was only $30 when it was really $70. Or maybe we told our friend that we had to work late and couldn’t go out when that was far from the case. While noticing when and understanding why we tell these untruths is important, let’s focus for a moment on the untruths that we may be telling ourselves.

These untruths say we must buy this or that product, house, phone or car to be considered acceptable. Or even the consideration that someone else’s opinion is more important than our own. Or the reaction of acting the opposite of what we feel as being appropriate. The potential untruth of going to work everyday void of any passion for the tasks or people there, and telling ourselves we must do this to survive, while all the while we’re killing ourselves slowly inside.

Are we finding ourselves letting little things slip from our minds and mouths that further hide how we truly feel?

This week, before resting for the day, it may be helpful to take a few moments and recall if we told any untruths – to others or ourselves. What feelings arose that made it necessary to speak untruthfully?

Working on self discovery helps us understand how we work and helps us identify the beliefs we have formed – whether by our own doing or by external factors. Once we know what these beliefs are we can choose to keep them, alter them, or discard them – hopefully growing closer to our truth in the meantime.

Closing in on Clarity “Why am I carrying this extra energy?” This is a question we can ask ourselve

Closing in on Clarity

“Why am I carrying this extra energy?” This is a question we can ask ourselves when you feel lethargic, overwhelmed, or distracted and unfocused. When we are lacking clarity it’s usually because we’ve allowed some other energy to block that clarity. We may be holding energy that is either not ours, or potentially is our own self-sabotaging mechanism. What energy patterns of behavior are programmed reactions rather than mindful responses? What energy do they each carry with them?

Sometimes we allow our emotions to get the best of us, weighing us down or distracting ourselves from focusing on being clear. We may rush from one task to another not allowing ourselves the time to be our best. After all, we do enjoy many of our activities and make time to experience them.

However, when we do stop rushing and start taking time to remove that excess energy, we find that our days are much more pleasurable and smooth. The physical, emotional, and mental heaviness are lifted.

At the same time, carrying the extra energetic weight provides a lot of opportunity for growth. There is a certain amount of acceptance, forgiveness, and allowing we can learn through feeling our confusion and working through to clarity. The bottom line is that we want to feel good – we want to feel great! We know that to feel great we need to let go of all the thick energy that we may have accumulated into our fields.

We deserve to feel great all the time! This is our incentive to slow down and work through our discord, discomfort, and distraction.

We deserve to feel great – we are worth it! We are capable of creating a perfect balance of flow in our lives.

Namaste.

Conscious Creation

Sometimes we create many reasons to not do something we like to do.

Many of us may be plagued with fears of failure or have already included some extensive expectations of self that we cannot possibly meet. Other times we ask people for input and talk ourselves out of the possibility of meeting their expectations as well. Mainly though, we simply stop making or never create the time for ourselves to do what we want to do.

What thing do you like to do and haven’t in a while?
How can you make time this week or next to fit it into your schedule?
What will it take to give yourself permission to do so?

Remember we create each of our moments consciously and unconsciously. Steadily creating a few wonderful conscious moments for ourselves is a perfect way to create the life we desire.

What wonderful conscious moment can you create today?

Have fun!

Spiritual Cravings

Remember that meditation is something that helps us get in touch with our inner selves – our inner thoughts, and most importantly, our inner feelings. Similar to what our bodies feel drawn to eat, our spirits are drawn to varying forms of meditations. One day our bodies may crave fruits or vegetables, and the next day, we crave protein. Similarly, one day our spirits may benefit from a chakra meditation and another day, a walk in nature. There is no right or wrong way to meditate – to nurture our souls. Our spirits tell us what is needed to best benefit us in that moment. All we need is to be open and listen.

Take a few moments several times this week to take deep breaths until you feel more centered and open. Ask your mental body to take a 5-10 minute break. Then feel what type of nurturing activity or non activity your spirit would like. Enjoy the process, have courage to follow through, and bask in the results!

Cycle of Growth Allowing it to Grow It starts with a spark of inspiration – an idea or thought

Cycle of Growth

Allowing it to Grow
It starts with a spark of inspiration – an idea or thought. If deemed appropriate, we firmly plant this thoughtform into our psyche. While part of us would like instantaneous, ever expansive results, we know this thoughtform needs time to grow and develop. We allow this thoughtform to germinate – no pressure or timeline applied. As it sprouts, we watch it pass through its many stages. We guide it and let it unfold on its own course. We find beauty and newness in each stage, allowing it to grow through its trials and successes, expanding its physical boundaries.

Constant Nourishing
As we allow this thoughtform space and time to grow, we nurture it along the way, best as possible. We allow it to change course or exterior presentation, accepting it for what it is, realizing it is always in flux. Through our consistent attention, feeding, and watering of positive thoughts and excitement surrounding the thoughtform, we constantly nourish its growth process.

Persistent Flow
Through appropriate allowing and nourishing we enable the thoughtform to expand and plateau on its own. The periods of expansion and exposure allow it to spread its roots into other people’s psyche. Its subtle plateaus allow it time to integrate and grow into its newfound space and freedom.

Whispers in the Wind
The thoughtform experiences many iterations of ebbs and flows, growth spurts and plateaus. We no longer hearken in vigilance of the process. We are now one with the polarities; we are the ever-expanding thoughtform, and it is us. We coexist, in complete harmony, and communicate through whispers in the wind.

Being Aglow
As we reach new heights with our thoughtform and as its expansion continues to extend beyond our physical existence, the ease and light of our thoughtform illuminates us. We radiate ease and light to those around us – we shine with confidence and heart. We truly are aglow, sharing our light and experiences with everyone.

We all share the same path, yet we will all experience a different journey. This does not make it right or wrong or even less valuable. Actually, the lessons learned on the path/journey are only truly valuable to the one who experiences them firsthand – the direct, personal contact that takes place. Through those experiences and more so how we choose to embrace them, or not, will not only affect us but also those around us. This is the ripple effect.

We often confuse the word “serve” with “servitude”. Though similar looking and sounding, each have a distinct definition and ideology attached. We are to serve the best interest of others – our fellow man, the community – the world. But first we must serve the good of ourselves. This means to do things that enhance us internally – building a better person – enhancing our character, strengthening our spirit, etc. Servitude means to be enslaved to another or thing. This could also denote a winner and loser concept. We are left with nothing else but to follow one way, giving up our own ability to make a real difference. Because of the often confusion of words and their meaning, people will often dismiss the idea of serving others or helping others unless it equates to some return gain to them. However, the return gain is a better community – mutually finding a way – hence the ripple effect in action.

What Aikido was when it was created and what it has become and ultimately what it means to each of us are not one in the same. Aikido is what we make of it, what we do for it and what it does for us. The definitive ripple effect in our lives.

Framing Focus

Crooked pictures on the wall
what do you reflect?
That when doors slam down the hall
there straightness becomes all wrecked?

Is there something more profound
these pictures hung awry?
As within so without
perhaps I’ll look inside.

What’s askew inside my soul?
Am I honoring me?
Am I climbing towards soul goals
or flailing half-heartedly?

Perhaps the frames off kilter
are showing me a way
of temporarily losing my filter
and remembering to play.

Pictures pictures on the wall
what message do you bring ?
Is there any message at all
with such un-leveling?

Release the frames of their fault
Let the eyes focus and halt
gazing in upon the fixture
admiring the beautiful picture.

Inside the frame, an inspiring view,
that I have come to know;
The glory of perspective anew
the artist chose to show.

Sometimes we try to make something out of nothing; sometimes we make nothing out of something. In either case, we must keep sight of the important things – not just the urgent or personal pet peeves. The key to awareness is discerning what our highest focus is, and deterring distractions from blocking our paths.

Patience

When some things don’t go our way
Or we run out of nice things to say
We’ve reached the end of our rope
And abandoned most of our hope
When we can’t wait any longer
We grow weaker rather than stronger
Our situation is way out of line
That’s when we call in Patience – it’s time.

We fight her, though, put her behind bars
We don’t always let her in while
Entertaining our internal wars.

Yet she waits with calm and grace
Watching the look on our face
Wondering how much we’ll withstand
Before we ask or even command
Her presence in our day
To sweep the heavy emotion away
And allow the calm to return
Cease all anger and its burn
Pry open our heart and mind
Realizing we’re only in a bind
Because we believe we are.

When we ask her for help
When our whimpering becomes a yelp
Swiftly and effortlessly – Patience is here
Washing away our frustration and fear
Letting us know the importance of time
How it sets things up in a straight line
Although we may not always see.

So we bring Patience in
We take her inside
We let her clear up acne
Of the impatient kind.
We learn to walk with her
And set the intention
That when we need it
She is our intervention.

Love

Love truly begins with ourselves. The more we love ourselves for who we are the easier it is to let others’ love for us flow into our hearts. When we’re able to share our own love, we feel compelled to love others – creating a contagious flow of love. We know that who we are and what we focus on is what we attract. Being and sharing love brings more love into our lives. As we realize and grow into this ideal, love shows up in our lives in a myriad of ways and amounts. This newly received love fuels the already heightened self-love and creates a beautiful cycle of love. We can draw upon this cycle of love when we are feeling love and also when we may feel less than love.

We all have heard “what goes around comes around”. We can make a choice to fill our thoughts and days with love so we experience more love altogether.

Martial Zen

Martial spirit is basically the “warrior within” each of us. Martial zen would then be the practice or training to hone those inner skills of the spirit creating a better individual. However, one does not have to practice martial arts or a fighting system to practice martial zen for the spirit. Whatever path someone chooses to follow, martial zen can be achieved – a chef, business owner, priest, musician, parent, etc…

Martial is defined as being warrior-like or suited for war, relating to soldiers or military.

For those in the Arts, martial has come to mean a discipline – not one imposed by others but one imposed by self. Thus, the study of self. We are always at war, so to speak, with ourselves – defining right from wrong,

However, in our own personal reality, martial is whatever you want or make it to be. It is an individual thing – an individual path we each seek to travel, explore and discover. Who is really to say different? To say that “this is martial” or that “this is not” is judgmental and limited. Martial is more of a belief system. “Martial” was developed to deal with an issue at hand, thus, the many styles and approaches – almost a particular reaction for a particular action. This is why we see such diversity. And that diversity can be embraced and learned from by experience rather than what often happens where we question and condemn.

Budo is a martial way, thus, is a disciplined way of life. How we choose to discipline our lives is our decision.

Find your way…

Breaking out of the Norm

Many of us have been brought up believing that being normal was what we must strive for – even finding that we would work at it unconsciously. Perhaps our parents wanted us to fit in for our own well-being or eventually, somewhere along the line, we bought into that need as well. Regardless the reason, we soon policed ourselves when it came to judging normal and not so normal behavior, conversation, interests, etc. Maybe somewhere, along with nurturing the judgment and attachment to being what is believed to be normal and judging normalcy by those standards, we also may have manifested a fear of not being normal. This fear can be about missing out on something, being left out or behind, and ultimately of being alone or isolated, with all the potential insecurities that accompany it.

Frequently, we will hear talk about there not really being any such thing as being normal or having a normal family. Yet, each of us still have some stipulations around acceptable and unacceptable social and family behavior – which explains why people struggle with doing or being something others may judge as not normal. On some level, the judgments will always be there – it’s how we perceive ourselves that makes the difference. It’s important then, to take responsibility for our own judgments and be willing to change and eventually let go of all those judgments. In doing so, we give ourselves and others permission to try new or different things and ways of being. The outcome in such situations becomes an unknown simply because it’s new territory – it may be very rewarding or one that can be an extraordinary learning experience.

What we can learn is that sometimes stepping out of our normal judgment standards can provide tremendous growth that we may have missed had we stuck within our regular normalcy boundaries. Many of us will limit our experiences based on our normalcy judgments, placing human doing before our idea of human being. Many of our hearts’ desires lie dormant because of fear of self or others judgments when stepping out of a perceived norm.

Look inside the heart; see where we may be able to break out of the norm today. Small steps get us moving forward. Be aware of judgments of ourselves or others that we can let go of – or at the very least re-evaluate. Even the seemingly tiniest of intention to break from the norm can provide a refreshing, free feeling – which may just be the start of creating a dream.

The Challenge is on You

Each and every day holds challenges. Even more so, each and every moment is filled with decision to whether or not accept the challenge and conquer it. The choices we take decide the life we make. It is easy to allow things to pass us by and not take ownership of the things in our lives. Often it is easier to just turn and look away, pretending not to see or acting as if we do not know. Ignorance is bliss – but is it?

The things we never confront or never accept may be the things in life we miss out on. These opportune moments may be what change everything. They may be the things in life that propel us to new heights, open new doors and allow us to become a better version of our current self. It may be the fine line between living and just existing.

Aikido is a world of moment by moment decisions and challenges are never in short supply. An opportunity exists every time each of us steps into the dojo to train. A difference can be made by the choices we make. Showing up may not be enough. Actively taking a participating role may be required to experience, expect and to excel at the moment of choice. This moment – your moment.

Make the decision to make each moment spent at the dojo a personal challenge to shine and surpass your last time on the mat. Expect more and you will receive more. Challenge yourself to do more and your experience will be more. Allow yourself to excel and you will simply excel more.

Each moment holds the chance of a lifetime. To find what it holds the challenge is on you.

Striking Resemblance

Some of us may have striking resemblances with another family member or even a close friend – whether in looks, mannerisms, or tastes. Sometimes we enjoy sharing these traits with another and other times we do not. The times we do not are the times we’ve judged a certain quality as non acceptable or unwanted.

A striking resemblance is usually one that is completely out in the open, very obvious, and almost amazing or surprising. As a society, we have come to train ourselves to look for the differences, the defects, and the needed improvement, that sometimes striking resemblances affect us moreso than they would if we were more attuned with our similarities.

While we quickly judge a trait as good or not so good, we have, on a subconscious level, already identified with that trait within ourselves. Although outwardly we may focus on how negative or positive a resemblance someone has, we may really be negatively or positively commenting on our own selves. When our buttons are pushed, it’s quite likely we’ve hit upon a striking resemblance of a trait within ourselves that we may not accept or appreciate. It’s during these times where inner reflection – both intellectual and emotional reflection – can be of great benefit. Realize that in these moments the potential for great growth or passive denial can occur. Which will you choose?

Letting Go with Compassion

Many situations find us holding anger. Whether it is an unfair work situation, tension among family members, lack of finances, inability to do something physically, etc. There are so many reasons we find to be in anger. What is the source of the anger? Often, the source of our anger is that we cannot control the situation. We have a specific way in which we believe the situation should or should have played out, and it is not, or has not. Yet, we remain attached to whatever we believe it should be. Although we may have adatped on the outside to some degree, we still have not fully addressed the anger we feel about it. Here’s where letting go comes in.

Letting go of a situation completely means that we have acknowledged that something didn’t quite match our expectations, but we’re able to move gracefully with full acceptance to the next phase. While we do create our own reality, much of our reality is co-created. We can acknowledge which part of the co-creation we are responsible for, and then determine how we could change our participation in the next opportunity if it so arises.

The tricky part comes in when we believe we’ve participated eloquently in the situation but the other person or people have not. Depending on our level of attachment to the end result, we may blame the other participants for our position in the situation. We must be careful to not give full control to others in our belief systems. We always have a choice – a choice to be angered and a choice to let it go. We have a choice to allow others to be who they are without infringing upon our own self truth.

As we learn to let go more frequently, our attachments fade as well as our anger. We find great pleasure in simple moments and allow our dreams to flow rather than making them happen.

For many, this awareness, detachment, letting go, and allowing, is a lifelong series of experiences. Having others who understand what we’re doing on an energetic level, and who support us in doing so, makes the path a bit easier and compassionate.
