Pewnego pięknego dnia, sprzątając szafki w moim pokoju, natknąłem się na dwa zakurzone pudełka. Nie musiałem się długo zastanawiać i jeszcze tego samego wieczoru na moim kompie wylądowały oddziały GDI oraz NOD’u – główni “bohaterowie” odsłony jednej z najlepszych serii strategii czasu rzeczywistego, czyli Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun.

Dałem ukojenie swoim wspomnieniom i zagłębiłem się w fabule gry, która obok setek godzin spędzonych wspólnie w liceum była też pierwszą recenzją, jaką przeczytałem w śp. Resecie i już wtedy rozpalała moją wyobraźnię czyniąc czas oczekiwania na własną wersję gry czystą formalnością.

Nie dziwi więc fakt, że o ile kiedyś przejście TS’a zajęło mi około 2 tygodnie, tak obecnie, znając doskonale fizykę i położenie głównych celów misji ukończyłem główną część wraz z dodatkiem Firestorm w ciągu 4 dni. Tak jak i wtedy poczułem pewien niedosyt, którego nawet Skirmish nie był w stanie zaspokoić. Dlatego też postanowiłem skorzystać z możliwości, której dawniej nie miałem i podzielić się z Wami moimi refleksjami na temat tej niedocenianej przez wielu, ale jakże interesującej pozycji. Postaram się udowodnić Wam, że nie tylko Starcraftem rts stoi ale także takimi grami jak Tiberian Sun. Ale po kolei..

Stalin i kilka słów historii

Wiele lat temu, w czasach gdy rts’y miały się bardzo dobrze i gracze z zachwytem witali każdą nową pozycję z tego gatunku, firma Westwood stworzyła całkiem nową pod względem fabuły jak i rozwiązań grę – Command & Conquer.

Otóż okazało się, że na Ziemię spadł potężny meteoryt, niosący ze sobą zarodniki Tyberium – rośliny rodzącej kryształ o niesamowitych właściwościach. Był on szkodliwy dla wszelkich żywych stworzeń, ale wyjątkowo wydajny jako paliwo. Szybko zaczęły interesować się nim różne korporacje, a wśród nich także organizacje przestępcze, z których największą był NOD. Władze natychmiast zareagowały na taki stan rzeczy i przeciwko wystawiły wojska GDI (finansowane z pieniędzy podatników :]). Tak się rozpoczęła wieloletnia wojna, której wynik po części zależał od gracza. To, że nie będzie on prosty, dały do zrozumienia reklamy kolejnej odsłony z pod tytułem: Tiberian Sun obecne w instrukcji. Lecz z niewiadomych przyczyn gra szybko nie ujrzała światła dziennego, a przed nią był..

Red Alert, w którym poznawaliśmy kolejną alternatywną historię świata. Tym razem pewien zwariowany naukowiec przeniósł się za pomocą specjalnej maszyny w czasie i unicestwił Hitlera gdy ten był jeszcze dzieckiem. Miał dobre intencje, ale w wyniku jego działania Związek Radziecki pod wodzą Stalina zaatakował Europę i pozbawiony przeciwwagi zdobywał dominację nad światem. Przeciwstawili się temu Alianci doprowadzając do największej wojny w historii, zbierającej krwawe żniwo.

Pomimo tego, że Command & Conquer zdobył znacznie większą popularność niż Red Alert, to ten drugi wniósł wiele nowych rozwiązań do serii jak np. zwiększenie roli piechoty na polu walki, nowe maszyny latające, flotę okrętów bojowych, w tym też podwodnych, a także szereg rozwiązań taktycznych jak samoloty szpiegowskie, czy zrzut spadochronowy. Jedynym minusem była grafika. Z trudem można było dostrzec pojedyncze rozpikselowane jednostki na polu walki. Mimo to obydwie gry oferowały zabawę na najwyższym poziomie i po dziś dzień są kanonem komputerowych strategii rts, który wraz z Tiberian Sun, Red Alert 2, Generals oraz Tiberium Wars tylko utwierdziły pozycję Westwood na tronie zespołów specjalizujących się w tym gatunku gier obok Blizzarda – twórców Starcrafta oraz jego kontynuacji. Ale to już zupełnie inna historia, a my wracamy do..

Tiberian Sun, czyli zielone słońce

Oczywiście taki podtytuł, to tylko część prawdy, gdyż obok zielonych kryształów obecne są też niebieskie – znacznie rzadsze i cenniejsze od zielonych, a także bardziej wybuchowe Jak wygląda Tiberian Sun dzisiaj. Właściwie to szkoda w ogóle poruszać tą dyskusję, gdyż gra, która dostawała kiedyś oceny 8-9 w branżowych pismach, obecnie otrzymałaby co najwyżej 2-4 za sam klimat i rozgrywkę. Piksele siekają po oczach, a po kilku godzinach grania te ostatnie bolą, łzawią i odmawiają posłuszeństwa. Nawet aspiryna nie pomoże na nasilający się ból głowy.

Co w takim razie przyciąga do tej “męczarni”?? Otóż to, czym ta gra wciąż może się bronić, czyli doskonałą grywalnością, klimatem i fabułą. To co dla mnie osobiście stanowi największy plus, to przejrzystość pola walki. Bez trudu ogarniamy każdy skrawek mapy i każdą jednostkę będącą lub nie pod naszą kontrolą. Nie ma z tym problemu, gdyż rzut jest izometryczny, a wszystko dwuwymiarowe. Jest ładnie i może się podobać. To nie to samo co jednostki i grafika w Red Alert, tutaj nawet pojedynczy żołnierz nie umknie naszej uwadze, a jego zachowanie podczas chwili wytchnienia utwierdza nas tylko w przekonaniu, że jest prawie jak “prawdziwy”. Czasami czyści broń, czasami padnie, a częściej po prostu stoi czekając na nasze rozkazy. To samo tyczy się jednostek mechanicznych, które sprytnym zabiegiem starają się udawać trójwymiarowe. Każda rzuca cień i ma kilka animacji, co w połączeniu z ich liczbą daje pojęcie o pracy włożonej przez autorów.

Warto dodać w przypadku budynków, że także rodzaj mapy wpływa na ich wygląd, np. gdy prowadzimy działania na śnieżnej mapie – także budynki są przyprószone śniegiem. Niby szczegół, ale takich smaczków jest pełno i wpływają na pozytywny, końcowy obraz gry. Również design jednostek i budynków poszczególnych frakcji konfliktu został świetnie oddany i już po pierwszym rzucie oka widać, że NOD jest zły, a GDI to orędownicy spokoju i dobra. Wystarczy tylko przeciwstawić Temple of NOD jakiejkolwiek konstrukcji GDI, aby zrozumieć kto tutaj rządzi.. do czasu ;P

Postanowiłem przedstawić Wam każdą jednostkę i budynek występujący po obu stronach wraz z opisem jego funkcji. Możecie oczywiście opuścić ten akapit, ale będzie Wam łatwiej zrozumieć moje późniejsze słowa dotyczące taktyki, gdy będziecie wiedzieć o czym i o kim mówię.

^screen przedstawiający działanie Stealth Generatora. Jeżeli gramy przeciwko jednostkom NOD, efektem działania urządzenia będzie pusta przestrzeń widoczna w obrębie jego zasięgu. Są trzy możliwości zaatakowania tak chronionej bazy:

I. Ustawienie Juggernautów w pobliżu przewidywanej lokalizacji bazy wroga i zmuszenie ich do strzałów na ślepo za pomocą Ctrl’a. To samo z użyciem Orca Bomberów. Efektem będą chwilowe zaniki pola lub całkowite jego zniszczenie, przy celnym trafieniu.

II. Ustawienie w pobliżu bazy wroga Mobile Sensor Arraya, który odkrywa przed nami wszystkie niewidoczne budynki i jednostki.

III. Rzucenie piechoty na bazę wroga, gdyż budynki w jej pobliżu stają się widoczne. Ryzykowne zagranie, jeżeli w bazie znajduje się artyleria lub lasery (a w szczególności Obelisk of Light, który przeoczyłem robiąc screeny i powinien być zamiast jednego EMP Cannon), ale czasami skuteczne, tym bardziej gdy wśród żołnierzy będą medycy.. ale o tym później

^przykład zastosowania Limped Drone, czyli pluskwy. Obserwujemy kontem oka, na które pole Tiberium zmierzają żniwiarki wroga. Produkujemy Limped Drone i skierowujemy na docelowe pole lub drogę, którą podąża żniwiarka. Instalujemy pluskwę w ziemi standardowo klikając i czekamy. Nie musimy patrzeć na pole, tylko możemy się zająć ważniejszymi sprawami. Stosowny dźwięk informuje nas, że pluskwa została zainstalowana pod spodem żniwiarki. Po zaznaczeniu takiej jednostki będzie ona w żółtym, a nie standardowo białym okienku. Teraz wystarczy tylko śledzić na Radarze drogę, którą podąża oraz odkrywaną mapę. Tym sposobem uzyskamy wiele szczegółów pomocnych w planowaniu taktycznym ataku. Świetny patent :tak:

Po zainstalowaniu odpowiedniego ulepszenia na budynku GDI Upgrade Centre, jesteśmy w stanie niemal w każdej chwili wezwać posiłki podczas ataku na bazę lub wrogie jednostki. Tym bardziej, że przysłani zostaną sami weterani (stosowna gwiazdka).

^przykład działania ION Cannon. Jeden strzał – jedna jednostka lub mniejszy budynek wroga mniej :]

^^nowy budynek o takich samych właściwościach ale innej nazwie dla każdej ze stron. Powyżej Fist of NOD, pod nim Mobile War Factory. Na wcześniejszych screenach możecie zobaczyć wersje mobilne tej konstrukcji, które w docelowym miejscu po prostu rozstawia się (nie można ich złożyć z powrotem i przestawić w inne miejsce oraz produkcja jest ograniczona do pojedynczej jednostki).

Mission Accomplished

Już wiecie jak wygląda Tiberian Sun. Dodam, że słucha się też z wielką przyjemnością, a to za sprawą doskonałej muzyki Franka Klepackiego. Jest dynamiczna i zachęca do gry. Mi osobiście zawsze kojarzyła się ze żniwiarką zbierającą Tiberium XD Znacie już większość plusów tej gry. Jest nowatorska, choć posiada kilka zapożyczeń ze Starcrafta (np. rozstawiane jednostki) oraz Diune 2 i 2000 (np. Disrupter przypominający Sonic Tanka, wykorzystujący falę dźwiękową do niszczenia wrogich jednostek i budynków). Wiecie też, że posiada doskonałą fabułę, a także filmiki przerywnikowe z udziałem prawdziwych aktorów.

Jednak TS nie jest pozbawiony minusów. Pierwszym i najważniejszym jest brak floty morskiej. Stanowi to znaczny krok do tyłu w stosunku do Red Alerta. Trudno podciągnąć pod nią amfibię i MLRS’a. Brak jednostek stricte morskich boli. Kolejnym minusem jest wszędobylska w GDI mania ulepszania. Podczas gdy NOD ma dostępną gotową Zaawansowaną Elektrownię, u GDI musimy kupować oddzielne turbiny dla każdej elektrowni. Początkowo nawet może się to podobać, ale później tylko denerwuje i zmusza do stawiania setek zwykłych elektrowni, gdyż nie ma czasu zajmować się pierdółkowatymi turbinami. Tak samo jest z wieżyczkami. NOD ma dostępny laser i sam’a, a u GDI musimy najpierw wybudować podstawę (tylko jeden rodzaj), a potem dopiero umieszczamy na niej sam’a, rpg lub działko Vulkan.

Kolejne minusy wiążą się już z dodatkiem. Firestorm przyniósł ze sobą zmodyfikowanego Titana i Wolverine. Pierwszy i drugi został wyposażony w laser. O ile jeszcze laser przeciwpiechotny u Tytana rozumiem, bo dzięki niemu jednostka ta nie jest już tak bezbronna w starciu z piechotą (i można ją rozstawiać po bazie zamiast żmudnych działek), to funkcja lasera zestrzeliwującego samoloty wroga u Wolverine’a co najmniej dziwi, jak na gabaryty i zastosowanie docelowe tak małej jednostki. Do tej pory służyła ona do zwalczania piechoty i tak powinno pozostać. A teraz nie trzeba budować sam’ów, bo Wolverine znacznie lepiej i szybciej radzi sobie z siłami powietrznymi niszcząc je tylko jednym strzałem. Jest jeszcze kilka takich kwiatków, jak np. osławiony Juggernaut. Dodanie go do jednostek GDI wyrównało szanse z NOD’em i jego kultową artylerią. Pomysł ten IMO jest nietrafiony, gdyż właśnie po to wybierało się słabszą frakcję aby zwycięstwo z NOD’em dawało jeszcze większą satysfakcję. A teraz jest po równo. Co prawda Juggernaut strzela kilkoma słabszymi pociskami, dopiero w sumie równającymi się z jedną kulą artylerii, ale w starciu jeden na jednego wygrywa, gdyż przerwy pomiędzy strzałami są krótsze.

Tak więc aktualnie i NOD’em i GDI gra się niemalże jednakowo, ale wciąż pozostaje wielka przyjemność i miód płynący z gry, chwilami nawet większy niż w Starcrafcie (tak wiem, wszyscy fanatycy tego ostatniego mnie teraz w myślach linczują, ale spokojna głowa – podobny wpis kiedyś poświęcę ich ulubionej grze, w którą się kiedyś zagrywałem i jemu też posłodzę ;]). Dodatkowo wraz z Firestorm’em doszły nowe “przeciwności przyrody” w postaci dzikich zwierząt z wielką finezją i zapałem atakujących nasze jednostki. Wszystko to czyni grę niemalże idealną (oczywiście ze wspomnianymi wcześniej minusami), prawie tak idealną jak Red Alert 2.

Na koniec kilka porad taktycznych

- Pamiętajcie żeby tworząc piechotę “wyprodukować” też co najmniej dwóch lekarzy. Będziecie wtedy praktycznie niezniszczalni :]

- Kiedy będziecie mieli możliwość budować artylerię u NOD’u lub Juggernauty u GDI, nie wahajcie się ani chwili i przynajmniej trzy postawcie w swojej bazie.

- Pamiętajcie aby przy każdej ciężkiej jednostce powyższego typu postawić po jednym Titanie lub Cyborgu. Są one dobre w walce, ale mają słaby pancerz, dlatego należy je chronić.

- Gdy startujecie z bazą i warunki na to pozwalają wybudujcie jak najszybciej dwie Tiberium Refinery i dwie dodatkowe żniwiarki (w sumie będziecie mieć 4). Nie ma nic gorszego niż ostrzeżenie kobiety (GDI) lub faceta (NOD) o pustym skarbcu.

- Planując ofensywę zniszczcie lub przejmijcie inżynierami w pierwszej kolejności Construction Yard, a potem War Factory. Pierwsze aby raz zniszczone obiekty nie były odbudowywane, drugie aby przeciwnik nie wybudował Mobile Construction Vehicle, a tym samym drugiego Construction Yard’u.

- Inwestujcie w Orca Bombery i Banshee. Podczas nalotów niszczcie sukcesywnie sam’y niezapominając, że najważniejszy jest Construction Yard oraz artylerie i Juggernauty. Możecie sobie pomóc ION Cannon’em i Multi Missile’em. 6 Orca Bomberów w zupełności wystarcza aby pomimo sam’ów dolecieć i zniszczyć centrum dowodzenia czyli CY. Po każdej strąconej jednostce buduj niezwłocznie drugą.

- Pamiętaj aby rozbudowywać cały czas flotę swoich żniwiarek i Tiberium Refinery. Na jedną powinny przypadać maksymalnie 3 żniwiarki. Czasami bardziej opłaca się wybudować nową rafinerię niż żniwiarkę, bo ceny są porównywalne, a im bliżej rafineria pola tiberium (nawet tego znacznie oddalonego) tym krótsza droga transportu i deficyt Tiberium mniejszy.

- Gdy masz taką możliwość wybetonuj bazę. To mało kosztuje, a jest skuteczne przeciwko inżynierom wroga poruszającym się podziemnymi pojazdami APC.

- Zawsze pozostaw obok głównego budynku (CY) 2-3 Tytany, aby niszczyły Devil’s Tonque i APC z inżynierami.

To chyba tyle z najważniejszych rzeczy :]

Overview :

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is a 2.5D real-time strategy computer game by Westwood Studios, which was released for Microsoft Windows on September 28, 2000 as the follow up to Command & Conquer: Red Alert. Set in the early 1970s,[2] Red Alert 2 supposedly picks up at the conclusion of the Allied campaign of the first game.

Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 contains 2 playable factions, Soviets and Allies which both previously appeared in Command Conquer: Red Alert. Red Alert 2’s single player campaign is structured in an alternate-ending mode as opposed to a progressive story mode.Unfortunately, getting specific logistical tactics to work is tricky with the tiny sprite units (even more difficult in higher resolutions) and you’ll eventually find it difficult to grab the right units to throw at the bad guys without inevitably making sloppy moves, flawed waypoint system notwithstanding.Both single-player campaigns build up with complexity and entertainment in typical RTS fashion while the multiplayer modes make for some great heated bouts of pride.

Story:

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 contains two distinct story lines depending on which faction the player wishes to play as. Both of the story lines differ in several distinct ways. However, the Allied story line is canon due to the way in which the expansion pack continues.Wielding strange new technologies and hungering for revenge, the Soviet Empire invades America. New York City and Washington are overwhelmed. Allied forces, unprepared for the surprise attack, are decimated.It’s like playing Doom II, watching another season of The X-Files, or listening to a new Oasis album – nothing is too innovative, too shiny, or too confusing. Everything feels familiar to millions while being just slightly different enough to dish out a good time for all. Yes, it’s “comfort food” that entertains you and with what seems like the 403rd installment in the Command & Conquer series, Westwood successfully believes in the old adage of reaching a man’s heart through his stomach.

Indeed, the immediate gut instinct while loading up Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 is that it’s often difficult to tell it apart from the original game made almost five years before. Same isometric 2D view, same resource management, same tiny unit sprites, same regurgitated real-time strategy (RTS) tricks. But, for some reason, mainly due to small, yet effective gobs of spit and polish, it’s a blast. How exactly did that happen?

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 continues where the 1996 original left off. That alternate World War II had the Soviets contained, but now a new, last-minute danger has arisen with mind-control machinations and an invasion straight into the American capital. Not to put too fine a point on it, “red” in this context still equals “evil,” but no one really takes the game’s premises seriously, do they?

Of course they don’t. Which is proven more now than ever before, helped in part by the overly camp, full-motion video briefings that, despite trying so hard to be taken lightly, make you want to laugh at them, not with them. Northern Exposure’s Barry Corbin tries his best to make certain his good old Yankee patriotism is understood while Sliders’ Kari Wuhrer’s physical attributes are amply displayed in every clip she graces.

But, instead of shooting themselves in the foot by taking such an unquestionably silly premise as Russian airships flying into New York City with the straightest of narrative tones, the video segments are shot with a “we know you know that it’s all just a lark anyway” attitude. This is both refreshing and grating at the same time but it works – in a way.

Allied campaign

The Allied story line begins with a special forces team led by Special Agent Tanya being sent to New York City to repel the Soviet invasion there. The player, with help from Tanya, successfully repels the Soviet invasion of New York City. Tanya and the Commander are then sent to Colorado Springs to liberate the Air Force Academy and the air base there. When returning home victorious from the battle, it is discovered that a Soviet mind control device known as the Psychic Beacon, a device that can mind-control the population of entire cities, has been deployed in Washington, D.C..

Soviet campaign

The Soviet storyline begins with the player being briefed by Premier Alexander Romanov about the upcoming Soviet invasion of the United States of America. Romanov tells the player that the first priority is the destruction of the headquarters of the American military, the Pentagon. The Commander carries out this order, leading an invasion into Washington, D.C. and destroying the Pentagon. Another Soviet invasion is launched into Florida to destroy the American fleet there, which was threatening the Soviet invasion of the East Coast. Even though the Commander is almost fully responsible for these victories, all the credit goes to the top Soviet commander, General Vladimir. Yuri recommends that the player captures New York City with a Psychic Beacon, a device that can mind-control the population of entire cities, while Vladimir is in Moscow celebrating so that Yuri and the “Comrade General” can also get some fame and glory.

Gameplay:

Every aspect of gameplay in the game is based on the collection of money. In the game, money can be collected by several means. The most common is using Miner trucks to gather Ore and/or Gems and transport them to a Refinery. A player can also gain a lasting income by capturing Oil derricks (neutral buildings that are present in some maps). There also are two one-time sources of money, namely collecting random crates which are present in the map and selling off buildings which are controlled by the player. The money is spent on constructing and repairing buildings and units. In both cases one can start construction before having the full cost in one’s reserves, as construction pauses if one runs short of money.There are five types of “constructor” building: Construction Yard (for buildings); Barracks (non-mechanized units); War Factory (mechanized units); Shipyard (naval units), and, only for the Allies, Air Force Command (Harriers or Black Eagles). At any point in the game one can construct a maximum of one building/unit in each category—having more “constructor” buildings simply speeds up production.

Mi a fasz van?
Komolyan, utálom, ha van egy fansubber csapat, akik félúton abbahagynak egy sorozatot, de ami télleg felbasz, az a Rumbel féle köcsög társaság, akik olyan tetü lassúak, hogy az elképesztő.
Lassan vége a Soul Eater-nek (naná, hogy nem nézek mást, csak ezt az egy fajtát, ha már ezt kezdtem szedni), 13 résszel vannak elmaradva, és egy hónapja nem adtak ki semmit.
Jó munkához idő kell.
Hahaha, kurvaanyád. Komolyan, amikor végre rászánom magam, hogy elkezdek nézni valami sorozatot, akkkor TUTI, hogy lesz valami megmagyarázhatatlanul kicsi és idegesítő apróság, ami elveszi a kedvemet az egésztől.
Ja, és Hinata (még) NEM halt meg.

Ja, és ma majdnem elkezdtem nézni a Bleach-et. Valami megmagyarázhatatlan erő által azt éreztem, hogy valamit néznem kell, de aztán szerencsére gyorsan lebeszéltem magam.

És örömmel konstatálom, hogy sokan elkezdték nézni a Grappler Baki-t. Nézzétek is bazdmeg, mert kurvajó, a többi 100000000000 részes tucatshounen elbújhat mellette.

Amúgy tegnap volt egy komoly rakettő parti, bár én csak szem-és-fül tanúja voltam, kurvára élveztem. Lehet egyszer megtanulok bánni vele.

Aztán elkezdtem Doujinshi Metál-t (!!!) hallgatni, ami kurvajó.

Meg elkezdtem szedni a Soul Eater: Battle Resonance című PS2-es játékot, ami 205 MB.

Ma akartam írni valami frappánsat, pl. arról, hogy pebróbálkozott velem egy zsebes a 3-as metrón, vagy hogy belénkjött egy Nissan-os hátulról, de valahogy hulla, KO és egy megsemmisült semmi vagyok. :S Jó ideje nem aludtam ki magam, szerencsére most lesz síszünet, így tudok vágni, aludni, olvasni, meg mindent.
Addig is hallgassatok egri HC-t illetve japán instrumentális heavy metal-t, mert jó.
Most StarCraft és RA2 megy az összes gépen, szal’ nem unatkozunk mi sem.

People Won't Be People

Good music and good games: two circles on the Venn diagram of media today that rarely intersect, if I’m honest. More recently, however, proper scoring and song selection for games has been higher on the agenda, as evidenced by these few I have picked out. Admittedly, developers of old did the best with capabilities of the technology, but it’s hardly something I’d choose to listen to. And no, I won’t be including this. Nothing personal, Nintendo fan boys, I’ve just never liked it.

First up, we have the spine-tinglingly good introduction sequence from Bethesda’s Oblivion, which demonstrates a wonderful bit of scoring.

I remember, the first time I played the game and watched this little clip, I knew the ride ahead was going to be a good one. I wasn’t disappointed. Patrick Stewart’s ominous vocals and the beautifully rendered game world would have been for nothing if the music filling the speakers was some generic fantasy piece.

Next up, we have an excellent example of a game that knew exactly the atmosphere it was trying to create. The musical part doesn’t kick in until over half way, but I couldn’t resist linking the introduction in full, as it shows you the tone Westwood were going for. The music, when set to the madness of battlegrounds that were all about devices that could control the weather, spies that could pretend to be cows and player controlled giant squids, was perfect.

Red Alert 2 had a refreshing confidence to it. Combined with a slickness in execution and some imaginative and crazy thinking, you had all the ingredients for a frenzy of fun. And that’s exactly what you got. Later games in Command and Conquer also had pretty good scores, especially Generals, which probably demonstrates that Red Alert’s success on this front was by no means a fluke.

Like Westwood (and laterly EA LA), Bioware have done a good job of getting their music right, most recently in the brooding, Jon Hopkins-esque futuristic tones of Mass Effect. It was, for me at least, in Jade Empire that the Canadian developer reallly hit the mark.

Possibly one of the most beautiful games ever made, Jade Empire was all about immersing yourself in the world of a mystical and ancient China. The story was fully deserving of being called “epic” and the gameplay was based around some simplistic yet enjoyable real time combat coupled with the storytelling questing that made Knights of the Old Republic (and hopefully The Old Republic) such a great game. The music was the piece of the jigsaw that fully tied you to this fantasy, it had a touch of the Pirates of the Carribean about its stirring refrains and yet was always evocative of the Chinese culture the game was portraying.

I had expected good things from Mirror’s Edge. In places, I certainly wasn’t disappointed, but the game overall had times of extreme frustration (which, sadly, resulted in the demise of my “indestructible” 360 controller). One thing I hadn’t counted on being good, however, was the game’s theme song, by Lisa Miskovsky, Still Alive. The tune fitted the mood of the visuals perfectly, the moment where the piano suddenly makes its loud entrance each time seems, to me, to effortlessly render the game’s beautiful cityscape views in audio. As a standalone, the song is not half bad.

We were spoiled with even more excellence over the Christmas period, however.

Little Big Planet reminded me why I play games and why, I’m pretty sure, I’ll still be playing them when my childhood is a distant memory. It’s fun, especially in a group, and has some of the most enjoyable platforming seen in a long time. Definitely the best game in terms of gameplay on the PS3 right now. But, like all the things in life that go beyond goodness and into excellence, it is the things that Media Molecule didn’t need to worry about that make the game experience that much richer and that much more rewarding. Organising Stephen Fry’s exceedingly good vocal work is an example, but the one we care about today is the music. Little Big Planet had a fantastic selection, both in its individually tailored soundtrack, courtesy of The Daniel Pemberton TV Orchestra, but also in its choice of songs from the wider world. The signature tune, Get It Together by The Go Team is a marvelous example but there are others: Battles’ Atlas and Jim Noir’s My Patch showed not only the developer’s taste for fine music but also their taste for fitting music. Both helped give each of Little Big Planet’s “continents” its own theme and vibe.

Slightly different again, we have the recent Crayon Physics. An interesting contender, no doubt, given it was basically developed by one man. Fortunately, he had a little hand with the music. The result is a charmingly surreal experience, adding a dream like feel to the whole game. Another honorable mention from the world of independent games must go out to Braid, one of the best games I played last year. The songs involved can be found here and were a good compliment to the strangeness of the game mechanics. A particularly nice touch in Braid was that, when time was reversed (as happens quite a bit in Braid) the music also played backwards and, similarly, when time was slowed the song playing followed suit.

Finally, we come to, what I think, is one of the best soundtracks ever, not just for a game.

Marty O’Donnell’s Halo soundtrack was perfect: from the very first time you brought up the menu on Halo:Combat Evolved and heard the monk-like chorus tease out that defining melody to the final sequence in Halo 3, where years of anticipation burst out into a frenzied race for the end, the music thrilling you, driving you on. Working at Bungie since the Myth series, by the time the last Halo came around O’Donnell had graduated to commanding a full orchestra. The result was spectacular and was undeniably one of the elements that went into making the game such a great experience.

So there you have it. There are plenty of games that I’ve left out, like GTA IV, well reknown for its decent selection of songs. I am also reliably informed that Final Fantasy and even the aforementioned Mario are well liked within their fanbases. Overall, I think the trouble is that, in the current days of Rock Band and Guitar Hero, we seem to forget that music can be enjoyed in other games as well.

Red Alert II: Yuri's Revenge

Red Alert II: Yuri’s Revenge is part of the stunning PC game series which makes up Red Alert. You can do regular skirmishes, or a full out story mode. The story mode is with two forces – One for the Allies (Americans) and one for the Soviets (Russians). You may be wondering “Why Yuri’s Revenge then?” and I’ll tell you why. Yuri is part of the story mode, but even though you won’t play as part of Yuri’s forces, you will constantly fight against him during the story modes. (You can play as Yuri’s forces throughout the skirmishes). This is a really fantastic game for the PC – I can’t put this down or say a bad word about it!

The first thing that impressed me the most about Red Alert 3 was the music. The opening cinematic was slow and a little boring, considering it basically shows what EA has been saying since the game was announced: Einstein’s death. Though the Imperial attack sequence was pretty nice, it was nothing compared to the sheer impact the music had.

Red Alert 1/2 had Hell March, which was a fantastic piece of electronica that frenzied and energized gameplay. RA3 has the Soviet March – grandiose, ambitious, frantic and whimsical all at the same time. Oh sure, there’s Hell March 3, but when you listen to both pieces, the heavy electronic beats just doesn’t seem to fit the bright and cheery (albeit violent) nature of the game.

Then perhaps this is more a problem that it seems. By all standards, RA3 isn’t a bad game. It’s a good game. Graphics are top-notch, playthrough is fun, and its light-hearted mood is brings a refreshing change to the seriousness of its genre.

However, RA3 isn’t just a game. It’s a sequel and as a sequel it doesn’t fare as well. There moments while playing that I felt RA3 was a parody of itself and RA2. RA2 played itself like a B-grade movie, and had a more serious undertone. It might be remembered as a ridiculous-in-a-good way game, but it didn’t think of itself as ridiculous. RA2 took its business seriously, which is a marked difference from RA3, which seems to thrive on the fact that it is ridiculous (Gundam robots and flying Battle Angels anyone?).

And so RA3 is like the Soviet March: light-hearted and cheerfully violent. Still it is a good game, and I’m still having loads of fun with it. While I will miss my Chrono Legionaires terribly, maybe I can find a new unit to love.

Red Alert 2 implements new feature from the previous version and add some new enhancements which create a good RTS! You have the same controls from the previous versions and you see the action from higher plan, but it’s still a succes for most RTS games! The game doesn’t add any advance feature to the gameplay, like commanding your troops to change the formation, or to scout an area, but there is no problem with the orders you gave to them, and an important thing is that you can use the waypoints to set tehm following a route! Red Alert 2 still remain a good RTS for his time, and can put you in a difficult sitaution when you play at the Brutal difficulty!

Hint: Playing with Lybia

Build six Demolition trucks and wait that your Iron Curtain power is fully charged and send the trucks to the enemy base! Before your trucks enter the base cast the Iron Curtain on them to be invincibile against enemy weapons then choose a target to destroy! Even if the Curtain Power is activated on the trucks they will blow and destroy or damage the enemy!

Hint: Easy 15.000$

1. Build 2 power plants side by side

2. Build a nuclear reactor next to them

3. Train 2 attack dogs, 1 infantry, and builda mirrage tank

4. Move these units next to the reactor

5. Order the mirage tank to attack the reactor and order the dogs to attack each other

6. When the reactor’s strength is in the red zone, finish it off with the infintry

This will destroy everything but will give you 15.000 $

Hint: Build Defense Everywhere

This tricks works only if you play with America. Wait your paratroopers to get ready. Then build a Prism Tower or Pillbox. Next click on the paratrooper tab. Then wait a little and click on the defense you chose.Finally click anywhere on the radar screen. The defense should be somewhere around where you clicked on the radar screen. Don’t forget that this method doesn’t always work.

Hint: Spy Tricks

You can place your spy in the enemy building to get some special or veteran troops:

1. Enemy barracks for veteran men (Rank 1)

2. Enemy war factory to get veteran tanks

3. Allied battle lab for a chrono commando

4. Soviet battle lab for a Psi commando, and if you have additional a Soviet enemy barrack, you have Yuri Prime

Allies ülkelerin tanklarından biri olan prism tank binaları yıkmak için birebirdir. Heleki bu tank 3 rütbe aldığı zaman çok uzun bir menzile sahip olmakta ve kendisine hiçbir şeyi yaklaştırmamaktadır. Tabi bu özelliklerinin yanında bazı dezavantajlarıda yok değil. Öncelikli olarak bu tank çok dayanıksızdır. Bu tankı 2 atışta altedebilirsiniz. O nedenle bu tanklarla saldırıya giderken mümkün olduğunca fazla prism tank ile beraber gitmeniz gerekmekte. çünkü prismlerin biri atmayı bıraktığında diğeri atmaya başlıyor ve kendilerine hiçbirşeyi yaklaştırmıyor.

Fear not worthy internet space I speak to as if it were a person for I have not left you yet! It is true that I have slacked a bit here and that’s mostly Leslie’s fault since she moved today and is now officially residing in Scumhampton! I shall be going there tomorrow (wireless ADSL router in hand) to see her. I actually gave her my old Tigermax Compy so hopefully if all goes well she’ll be online and pestering us some time soon!

I’ll get the WoW stuff out of the way since there isn’t much of it. As you may know it’s the Midsummer Fire Festival at the moment, what you may not know is that simply putting out the bonfires (i’ve done ALL the Oldworld ones) you can earn yourself a pretty penny and some sick experience. I decided, as an experiment, to see how much experience I could get for my Rogue Dreadmoore currently at level 68. I earned 547,000 Experience for doing nothing but walk around and talk to NPCs/Fires. I won’t lie though, it took me quite some time – but I did ding in the process, get all 4 capital flames and that nifty flaming brazier thing.

I have also decided I am going to try my hand at leveling an elemental shaman – He’s only level 7 at the moment (Mulgore is SUCH a bastard to level through) – but hopefully the end of this week will see him reaching a level from which I can start getting Mark to repay me all these runs I do for him and pimp him out in the Fang set.

On non-WoW related news my next Review game will be Battlefield: Bad Company, a game which has somewhat caught me off guard with it’s surprisingly fun gameplay style. It plays like a traditional Battlefield game … With destructible buildings in a Modern war environment. I certainly look forward to giving it a shot. I’m not sure if I linked it last time but my review of Aces of the Galaxy is up.

So Me and Mark were playing some Red Alert 2 recently (no YR) and we decided to do the medium Ally co-op campaign on the internets where you play as the Koreans. It usually proves to be a case of “How Quickly can we lock the map down?”. One level the island literally only joined for about 6 squares in the middle … So at the beginning of the game I rushed my MCV up there and started building a wall. A wall of death some might say. From then on the AI was just easy pickings as we strategy bombed them into the stone-age.

One last thing I want to talk about before I leave you with a few video links is a series they run on The Escapist called Unforgotten Realms. I don’t really know what to tell you besides you should definitely watch it … It’s about two guys one of whom is obviously a nerd and they do some D&D. The other guy totally takes the piss and much hilarity ensues.

Anyways, here’s the press release of the whole announcement:

LOS ANGELES, CA – June 11, 2008 – Video Games Live announced today that the music of the Command & Conquer franchise will be premiered for the first time ever this weekend during the Henderson/Las Vegas performance at the Henderson Pavilion with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. Las Vegas, Nevada is the birthplace of the Command & Conquer franchise which has sold over 22 million units worldwide. Initially created and developed at Las Vegas based Westwood Studios between 1995 and 2003, the award-winning franchise currently contains seventeen games with various expansion packs. The first installment of the series was released worldwide on August 31, 1995 and was based on Westwood Studios’ earlier strategy game Dune 2.

Joining the C&C World Premiere will be renowned C&C composer Frank Klepacki who (along with his band and the symphony) will be performing a special arrangement consisting of Hell March 1 & 2. Command and Conquer: Renegade 2, linking the Red Alert and Tiberium universes

As some C&C fans may know, Westwood Studios originally conceived Renegade 2 as the prequel to first Renegade title, linking the Red Alert and Tiberium universes. This game would link the events after Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Dawn, although details of how it links was severely lacking due to the fact that the project was canceled for unknown reasons. If you go to the CNCNZ.com website, the website collected every single shred of game images and information it can regarding the canceled project. As one would look at the Renegade 2 image gallery, there are a number of images that pointed to the link between the two universes. One interesting image is the combination of the iconic Soviet sickle and the Nod’s scorpion tail, which foretells how Nod took advantage of the Soviet Union.

The prequel that would link the two universes was ultimately canceled and to put the final nail in the coffin, a recent interview with Louis Castle, who remains with EA Games to this day, decided that the Red Alert and Tiberium universes will never be linked ever again. Brett Sperry’s baby was Command and Conquer, rather than Louis Castle’s. For now on, we will have to deal with THREE C&C universes: Tiberium, Red Alert, and Generals. It’s a real shame that the original vision of Red Alert was completely changed over the years.

Yuri's Revenge Soviet thoughts

I just finished playing as the Soviets and now I’ll list the good and the bad for them. First, the new units coming into play: Boris… Boris is a ton of fun and can be more versatile than Tanya in some instances. He can plow through vehicles pretty easily, but doesn’t hold up against taking out structures quite as quickly. He can take them out a good distance away, which is good against defensive structures, but with main buildings, Tanya gets the job done faster. The Siege Chopper was fun, when I could make use of it. Powerful against infantry (as long as it’s not a Flak Trooper or Guardian G.I., anyway) and when it deploys, it gives a good alternative to the formidable damage that a V3 can dish out. The Chopper’s advantage is that the firepower can’t be intercepted like the V3’s missiles. Of course, when it’s on the ground, it can be mind-controlled just like any other ground vehicle, so you need to keep an eye out. Keeping a few in the air nearby can keep Yuri Clones away from a quick mind-control steal. The Spy Plane gives a good way of seeing more of the map and it doesn’t take too long to recharge and use again (and it’s free once the radar goes up). The Industrial Plant is amazing in what it can do, providing that you can support the somewhat hefty cash and energy cost. By reducing the price and build times of vehicles by 1/4, you effectively get 5 units for the price of 4 in the time it takes to build 4. Very nice for improving their already great vehicle war game. Finally, the Battle Bunker. While not a unit per se, it is an amazing structure that doesn’t require any power and allows Conscripts to garrison it, giving your base a powerful protection that lasts in power outages. Each can only hold 5, but placed right, they can cover one another and make a base damn near impossible to crack. This also makes it much easier to take and keep the Neutral Tech building like the Oil Derricks, Hospital, Outpost and Machine Shop. I really wish I could have used the Cosmonauts in more missions, though. They were a ton of fun and had some great power, even if they were a bit pricey.

The missions were hard, like the Allied ones, but they didn’t always have the same hard endgame. Getting started in the missions was typically difficult, but once you were dug in pretty well, you could hold your own without worrying too much. The last mission was rough at first until I had a decent force and most of the bottom half of the map scanned. Getting rid of his Grinder helped a little bit, but it was only when I held the ore field up top below Yuri’s base that things started to even out a little. The number of units that would come down to attack me decreased sharply once I started taking out his miners. I liberated the Soviet base first since it had less in the way of anti-air defenses and sent my Kirovs in straight for the Psychic Beacon (its destruction gives that base and everyone inside to me, cutting his effective power by one third). I set up some Grand Cannons on the left side of the new Soviet Base and let them pound away at whatever Yuri structure they could find. Typically the nailed miners that were just coming out of the factory (and taking the factory out sometimes), so a lot of his money was spent just trying to catch up and rebuild what I would destroy. I liberated the Allies next, though I lost a good Number of Kirovs doing so. I had Apocalypse Tanks behind them, but kept them back because I didn’t want to lose them to the Prism Towers in the base. In hindsight, I probably could have taken the Towers without losing many Tanks and then they could have taken out the Anti-air problems and I would have lost fewer Kirovs. Oh well. Once I had the Allied Base as well, it was just a matter of coordinating the Grand Cannons and getting my Apocalypse Tanks in past their shelling to start ripping apart Yuri’s base, one bit at a time. It didn’t take too long and I was able to celebrate in Soviet fashion.

All in all, I’m quite happy with Yuri’s Revenge, though I still wish that they would have come up with a campaign for Yuri himself. It would have given you a chance to see his units and figure out the best way to use them, not to mention give him a neat story of how he takes over the world.

I’m not sure what the next game goal is for me. Maybe install Command and Conquer Generals next and play through that. Little by little, I’m catching up to things. I won’t be ready for when Kane’s Wrath comes out in a few weeks, but I’ll still be having fun in the meantime. I do think it’s time to do some more classic gaming, though. Initially I set this blog up for that purpose, so it seems logical to play some old games and blog about their strengths and weaknesses. We’ll see what comes up next.
