C&C: Red Alert in Windows 7 or Vista

Command and Conquer: Red Alert is an old game made by Blizzard approx 1996, and was recently released free to public. You can find it all over the net. Being an old game, it was not designed for todays multi-gigahertz, multi-core, NT6/7 technology, and this causes huge problems for the mouse scrolling.

What is a problem is that the mouse scrolling algorithm used in this game has some assumptions on how fast your processor is, and it is quite safe to say that those assumptions no longer hold as the scrolling speed is blindingly fast. There is a fix for this, although not very elegant, and that is to make your cpu super slow by making another program drain all of its power. CPUGRAB is one such program, and can be found all over the net. It can make your super fast core i7 behave like a 486 in notime

The only problem with this is that todays cpus have more than one core to split the load, which in our case is sub-optimal. You therefore have to assign both Red Alert and CPUGRAB to the same core using either

The Task Manager (press Ctrl-Alt-Shift)->Processes->Chosose CPUGRAB->Set affinity->CPU CORE 0
or doing it slightly faster from the command line (here assuming cpugrab.exe is in your Windows folder): Choose “Run …” and type cmd.exe /c start /affinity 1 cpugrab.exe

Since RA by default is running on core 0 you now have both programs running on the same core and can adjust cpugrab to a setting that makes the program comfortable. On my Core 2 Duo T7200 I set CPUGRAB to use 90% of the available cpu power.

Müttefikler(Allies):

Avrupa Devletleri (Birleşik Krallık, Fransa, Almanya) çıkan savaşta Müttefikler safındadır. Hikayenin önceki bölümlerinde büyük yıkıma uğrayan Yunanistan ise Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ne katılmıştır. Müttefiklerin tarafındaki bir diğer devlet ise uzak doğudaki Kore Cumhuriyeti’dir.

Müttefik Devletlerin Kendilerine özel üniteleri:

Amerika – Paratroopers (Paraşütçüler)
Fransa – Grand Cannon (Büyük Top)
Almanya – Tank Destroyer (Tank Yokedici)
Büyük Britanya – Snipers (Keskin Nişancılar)
Kore – Black Eagle Jets (Kara Kartal Jetler)

Sovyetler(Soviets):

Sovyetlere bağlı devletler tam olarak açıklanmamaktadır. Sovyetlerin Soğuk Savaş Döneminde denizaltı teknolojisi oldukça gelişmiştir. Bu dönemde Ortadoğu da Irak, Kuzey Afrika da Libya ve yine bu dönemde oldukça güçlenen ayrıca Sovyetlere en büyük yardımı yapan Küba’da bu safta yer almıştır.

Red Alert 2 Nedir?

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2, bir 2.5D Gerçek zamanlı strateji bilgisayar oyunudur. Westwood stüdyoları tarafından Command & Conquer serisi devamı olarak 2000 yılında piyasaya sürüldü. Oyunun bu serisinde Müttefikler (Allieds) ve Sovyetler (Soviets) eski serilere oranla daha yeni ünitelerle karşımıza çıktığını gördük. Red Alert hikâyesinin devamı olan oyunda multiplayer özellikleri de artırılmış olarak karşımıza çıkarılmış.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 2 için birçok yama çıkarılmıştır (Örn: CYBX MOD, DeeZire,Yuri’s Revenge,vs…). Oyunun hala müdavimleri mevcuttur ve oynanabirliği ile en çok tutulan oyunlardan biridir.

Serinin önceki oyunu Red Alert’in olaylarından sonra Müttefikler kazanmış kabul edilir. Red Alert 2′de ise Stalin yok edilmiş yerine zulmi ve kötülüğü sürdürmek için Müttefikler tarafından Alexander Romanov kukla olarak başa geçirilmiştir. Bu komünist parti üyesi asilzade, barışın avukatı olduğunu beyan etmektedir. Fakat Romanov’un başka planları vardır. Meksika’da çıkan iç savaşı bastırmak bahanesiyle Sovyet Kuvvetlerini ve Yuri’nin savaş birimlerini, General Vladimir Komutasında bu ülkeye yollar. Meksika’da büyük bir işgal kuvveti oluşturulur ve Amerika Birleşik Devletleri’ne sürpriz bir saldırı ile taarruz başlar. Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Güneyden beklemediği bir saldırıya maruz kalmıştır. Aynı anda tüm Sovyet Kuvvetleri Atlas Okyanus’u ve Büyük Okyanus’tan da saldırıya geçmiştir. Bu saldırıya karşı Amerikan yönetimi Sovyetlere karşı nükleer füzeleri ateşleme emrini verir. Fakat Yuri ruhsal teknolojisini kullanarak bu nükleer misillemeyi sabote etmiştir. Bunun üzerine ABD Başkanı Dugan ordusuna savunma ve aynı zamanda Müttefik kuvvetler ile bir araya gelme emrini vermiştir..

Sovyetler İle İlerleme

Amaç Müttefiklere karşı saldırıların zaferle bitmesidir. Sovyet fetihleri tüm dünyada sürerken gelişen olaylar zarfında, Yuri Sovyetler Birliğini eski yerine koymak için Romanov’u hasta göstererek hastaneye kapatmıştır. General Vladimir’i ise Beyaz Sarayda öldürtmüştür. Ve Sovyetler Birliği’nin idaresini ele geçirmiştir. Sonunda Bu olayların Yuri’nin yüzünden olduğu açığa çıkmıştır. Bütün bu olayların Yuri’nin yüzünden olduğu gerçeği tüm dikkatleri Moskova’ya Kremlin’e çevirmiştir. Sovyetler Birğinin ve etkisindeki dünyanın başındaki oyuncu Yuri’yi Moskova’ da devletin idaresini ele geçirdiği, Kremlin’de kuşatır. Sovyet Ordusu Kremlini Yuri ile birlikte yokeder. Böylece Sovyet egemenliği tüm dünyaya yayılmıştır. Yuri daha sonra “Yaşasın dünya halklarının kardeşliği” diye bağırmıştır.

Müttefikler İle İlerleme

Müttefik ilerlemesinde ise Sovyetlere karşı savaşılır. Dünyayı Sovyetlerden koruma mücadelesi verilir. Sovyet işgali etkisiz kalmaya başlar. Sovyetler saldırılarında hüsranla karşılaşır. Tüm dünyada Sovyet işgali durdurulur ve karşı atak başlar. Sovyetlerin yeterince güçsüz kaldığı durumda Moskova’ya düzenlenen bir operasyonla Alexander Romanov Kremlin’de Tanya tarafından tutuklanır ve devlet başkanlığından indirilir ve barış yeniden dünyaya hükmeder.

Fakat Yuri saldırılardan kurtulur ve kendi ordusunu kurarak ilerde yeniden tüm dünyada kaos başlatır. Bu hikâyenin devamı oyunun ek paketi Command & Conquer: Yuri’s Revenge de devam etmektedir.

Oynanış

Red Alert 2 oyuncunun hem maden toplamak, üsler yapmak gibi ekonomik, hem de asker üretip oluşturulan orduyu kontrol etmek gibi askeri görevleri üstlendiği gerçek zamanlı strateji serisi nin bir parçasıdır.

Red Alert 2 kullanıcı arabirimi sayesinde oldukça övülen bir oyun oldu, zira zamanın oyunları Red Alert serisine oranla teknik açıdan çok geriydiler.

Red Alert 2′de savaşlar hava, kara ve deniz olmak üzere üçe ayrılmıştı. İki taraf da (Müttefik ve Sovyetler) hava, kara ve denizde savaşabilecek üniteler üretebiliyordu. Ayrıca Red Alert 2 oyuncusuna: Özgün üniteler sunuyordu. İki tarafın da kendine özgü üniteleri vardı ve bu üniteler kesinlikle birbirlerine benzemiyorlardı. Ayrıca, Command & Conquer’dakinin aksine, taraflar “güçlü ama yavaş ve pahalı” (GDI) ve “ucuz ve hızlı, fakat güçsüz”(NOD) olmak üzere ikiye ayrılmıyorlardı.

Denge

Oyundaki taraflar arası denge oyunun çıkış tarihine göre inanılmaz derecede başarılıydı.

Sovyetler Tiberian Dawn’dan GDI’a benzer bir biçimde, elindeki ateş gücüne ve saf saldırıya güvenirken, Müttefikler de Brotherhood of NOD’a benzetiliyordu. Müttefikler ünitelerine verdikleri sabotaj görevleri ile düşmanlarına darbe vurmaya çalışıyordu. Taraf açısından bakılınca, dünyayı Brotherhood of NOD’ın yarattığı terörizmden kurtarmaya çalışan GDI ile Sovyetlerin zulmüne karşı çıkan müttefikler benzetilse de, bu kesinlikle gerçek dışı bir bilgi değildir, zira II. Dünya Savaşı ‘ nda Müttefikler M4 Sherman gibi güçsüz olmasına rağmen sayısı sayesinde üstünlüğünü sağlayan ünitelere sahipti. Fakat Müttefikler bugün M1 Abrams , Leopard 2 ve Challenger 2 gibi ağır zırhlı tanklar üreterek tehdit içeren ülkelere üstünlüğünü sağlamaya çalışmaktadır.

Müttefiklerin II. Dünya Savaşındakine daha yakın çizilmeye çalışıldığı barizdir, zira Müttefik güçleri kara ünitelerinin kalitesine değil sayısına güvenir. Sovyetler ise II. Dünya Savaşı Almanyası gibi düşünülmüştür askeri açıdan, karşı tarafa göre daha iyi tankları, jetleri ilk kullannan olma, geniş menzilli roketler ve denizaltılar kullanma gibi özellikleriyle.

Red Alert serisi “taş-kâğıt-makas” dengesini kuran eski oyunların aksine, oyuncunun seçtiği tarafı en iyi biçimde kullanmasının ve tarafının güçlü ve zayıf yanlarını bilmesinin zafer getirdiği oyundur. Açık savaş ile kazanmak isteyen generaller sovyetleri seçerken, Müttefikler sunduğu hız ve gizlilik daha taktiksel bir seçim olur.

The Labour Party’s Clare Curran is gurgling today after discovering that Lords of the Blog has a posting about Red Alert.

Curran describes Lords of the Blog as a cross parliamentary blog from the House of Lords, which only goes to show she has no grasp of the importance of the hyphen in a compound adjective.

No, it is not a blog for cross parliamentarians. It is a cross-parliamentary blog, which means parliamentarians of various stripes contribute to its contents.

Anyway, Clare carries on –

Interesting little discussion about us. More about our parliamentary system, rather than what we Labour MPs actually talk about. Feels a bit like being interesting specimens under the microscope.

Kiwiblog has got all excited about Lords of the Blog. I think that’s because DPF would seriously like those on the other side of the House to be expressing themselves more via cyberspace. Fair enough. Challenge!

Dunno if “excited” necessarily describes Kiwiblog’s condition when he posted on Lords of the Blog. Here’s what he said (and NB his oh-so-helpful use of the hyphen in cross-party) –

Now this is very cool – the House of Lords has a cross-party blog – Lords of the Blog. There are a dozen peers blogging there from all three parties.

Would be great to have such a blog in New Zealand. You could actually have MPs debating issues in front of us, with us able to contribute. I’ll add it to my list of long-term projects.

The challenge of course is to get Government MPs (regardless of party) to participate.

The Lords of the Blog, by the way, had this to say about Red Alert –

It appears we are not alone. There is another blog by parliamentarians. In this case, though, it is confined to one party. Labour MPs in New Zealand contribute to a blog. We can claim to retain our unique status in that we are cross-party. We also differ from the New Zealand blog in that we are members of a second chamber. New Zealand cannot compete in that respect – it is a unicameral system. And the blog in question doesn’t have fetching pictures of those who contribute to it.

It’s a good point, the one about fetching pictures. But if you look at your typical Labour MP (as Alf must do across the debating chamber), you can understand why the buggers aren’t too keen to post their pictures along with their potty ideas.

Can’t think which is uglier, come to think of it. A Labour politician, or a Labour politician’s perspective.

We get a glimpse of the way this perspective can become warped, more than somewhat, in the response which Clare Curran sent to the Lords of the Blog item about Red Alert.

Among other things, she says –

I am an electorate MP from the seat of Dunedin South, at the bottom of the South Island.

Alf is surprised there has been no thundering of outrage from the Busted Blonde at Roarprawn. BB – of course – comes from Bluff, which is roughly 200 kilometres below Dunedin South.

It’s not that much further away as the crow flies, sure, but Dunedin is sitting at around 45.50S and Bluff Harbour is at 46.36S.

We know Labour is prone to take a bit of latitude with its debating style, but this much latitude …?

A lot of people say that Red Alert is one, if not the best RTS games and the best of the C&C series. Lets take a look at Red Alert.

Does it fit into the 90s gameplay?
Check!
Does the missions requier tactic and outstanding unit management?
Fail! Its more like: build more units than the enemie and overrun him with a limitless amount of Tanks.
How is the level design?
Fail! Its not very spectacular for RTS games from the 90s. Even Earth 2140 has well designed maps. I dont need to mention StarCraft, do I?

What about Tiberian Sun? Does it requier tactic? Oh yeah, it requierts a lot of tactic! How is the level design? Its magnificent. Lets check why Tiberian Sun is the better RTS.

Red Alert and Tiberian Sun Comparison

Let me explain the tactical difference with a example of both games:

Red Alert

Can you remember the 4rd Mission of the Soviets? Destroy the Radar Dome to stop the Allies to get reinforcements and destroy the Allied Base hiding under Shadow-Generators.
First we had to build up the base and to secure the Ore fields, while we started the Tank production. The Enemie got reinforcements every 5 minutes that attacked our base. Our only chance to stop the attacks was to destroy the Radar Dome first. We used 5 Tanks and 2 V2-Rocket-Launcher and send them to the east, over a bridge and took out the Defense-Towers with the V2 before we were send our Tanks over the second bridge. There we had a battle with Allied Tanks that we won. The Radar Dome was on a separated island and now history, destroyed through our Tanks. The attacks stoped and the Allies only used units produced in the base to attack us. And there was another thing. We could send a group of V2 behind the Allied Base and destroy their powerplants from a cliff.

Missions like that doesnt appear very much in the game. There are some more examples, but nothing compared to this.

Tiberian Sun

Mission Number 4: Secure the Alien Crashsite first, capture NODs research center and destroy everything else.
We started to build up our base and to secure the Tiberium field, while we produced 5 Titans and 5 GatlingMechs. We started to move to the north, destroyed NOD Lasertowers of a little outpost with the Titans from a save range and used the GatlingMechs to kill incoming NOD soldiers. We continued to East and secured the U.F.O. In the meantime we had 30 Titans and 20 more Gatlings. We splited them into groups.

Group 1 was send to north-east and destroyed a cliff and could reach the left site of the NOD base. There they found the powerplants and shoot em into ground. The bases power was down now.
The second group went to east and blocked a bridge and NOD tanks could not leave. They also could destroy the bridge.
The third group went to west, opened a way by destroying a cliff and moved up to a tunnel. Through the tunnel and reached the backsite of the NOD base.

The defeners of the NOD base attacked group 3 and the way for the other two groups was free. I won the battle by attacking NOD from three sites. Tiberian Sun has some more examples, too. You have the choise to attack the NOD base first or to solve a optional mission with different targets: Cut the power first before attack the main base, destroy the communication before attacking the main base, get the control of the Ion-Cannon back before attacking the main base and many more!
You have always the chance to attack a base from different sites by destroying cliffs or repairing bridges.

EA Mobile sure has a busy Facebook page. First they reveal iPhone Rock Band, and now they drop details on the iPhone version of Command & Conquer Red Alert.

Due out later this month, Command & Conquer Red Alert for the iPhone and iPod Touch puts you in the boots of either to Soviets or the Allies as you fight touch-screen battles across 12 different combat levels. Many of the features of the series’ PC versions are present in the portable versions. You still build your base, research new technologies, and command your troops – it’s just now you do it with a tap of your finger rather than a click of your mouse.

Further utilizing the iPhone’s capabilities, C&C Red Alert will allow you to zoom in and out of the battlefield using multi-touch controls, making it feel a bit more like you’re playing with the future of the RTS genre rather than a port of something ages old.

Definitely an interesting proposition, but personality has always been a major factor in the success of the Red Alert series. If EA mobile can pull it off, I’ll be very impressed.

Und schon wieder gibt es einen herben Verlust für die HipHop Community zu vermelden: Der legendäre DJ und Mitbegründer der Juice Crew, Mr. Magic, ist im Alter von 53 Jahren an einem Herzinfarkt gestorben. Bereits Anfang der 1980er Jahre startete der New Yorker DJ John Rivas mit Mr. Magic’s Rap Attack durch – einer der ersten professionellen Radio-Shows für das Rap-Genre. “On Air” wurde er von Produzent und Plattenleger Marley Marl unterstützt. Unvergessen ist die Hommage an die Beiden von Biggie Smalls: “Every Saturday – Rap Attack – Mr. Magic, Marley Marl”, aus seinem Track Juicy. Mitte der 80er pflegte Sir Juice – der als Verbindungsmann der Mitglieder der HipHop Supergroup Juice Crew um MC’s wie Roxanne Shanté, Masta Ace, Big Daddy Kane, Biz Markie und Kool G Rap fungierte – eine Rivalität zu seinem Radio-Show Konkurrenten Kool DJ Red Alert. Wie von DJ Premier nun bestätigt wurde ist Mr. Magic am 2. Oktober 2009 verstorben.

Mr Magic was the first to put a regular hip hop program on radio. That show was called the Rap Attack on WBLS. All of us that grew up in NJ and NY fondly remember him and the Juice Crew All Stars. RIP Mr Magic.
