Another relatively uneventful day. Played The Warriors on PS2, thought about what the world would be like if New York gangs were flamboyantly dressed and had outrageous themes. It would certainly be a more colorful world.

Finally got a chance to see Up, too. Nobody delivers a story like Pixar. I wonder if they’ll ever make an R-rated movie? I’m sure Disney would raise its shackles.

Also, Red Bull Cola. Pretty tasty.

Ich habe mir gerade eine Dose Red Bull Cola gekauft. Ich dachte eigentlich, dass diese nicht mehr zu haben sind. Auch wenn meines Wissens in Baden-Württemberg kein Verbot, wie in manch anderen Bundesländern aktiv ist, habe ich lange Zeit keine gesehen und dachte die Läden hätten den Vertrieb auch hier eingestellt. Das Verbot wurde aufgrund von Kokainspuren in dem Erfrischungsgetränk ausgesprochen.

Nachdem ich diese Cola jetzt getrunken habe, muss ich aber sagen, dass sie mir nicht schmeckt. Sie schmeckt ein wenig lasch und säuerlich. Das war die erste und wohl auch die letzte Dose, die ich mir davon gekauft habe. Eine bessere Alternative zur Red Bull Cola ist meiner Meinung nach Jolt Cola. Infos dazu gibts auf bulletdd’s Blog.

[The following is the transcript of a recording Adam Dorsey made while conducting a live taste test of the new Red Bull Cola drink]

This is Adam Dorsey. It’s Friday night. August the 7th, 2009. I had to go to three stores before finding a can. I’m home now and popping it open as we speak. Review to follow.

[Can opening and drinking can be heard on the tape]

Tastes like poison. Tastes like they forgot to make a cola, found themselves with a warehouse full of empty cans, and instead of finding some sort of cola-like drink to fill the cans with, they just ground up half of the cans, mixed up the ground aluminum with blood, and put it into the remaining cans as cola. Or maybe that blood taste is my body trying to put itself out of its misery.

[The tape goes silent and for a few moments there is just labored breathing]

My breathing feels weird. Hollow. And the taste doesn’t go away. If anything, it’s getting strongerthemoreIdrink.

[Music plays, but it is unclear where the music is originating from]

I just realized I was staring at the same banner ad on the same website for like five minutes, but my thoughts were moving so fast I think I time-traveled. I think I saw 500 free animated smileys from the future, you guys, participation with partner offers necessary.

I think it made my fingers lighter, you guys. I think my fingers are lighter than air. Oh snap, my hands are floating, you guys, myhandsarefloating!

CHILL! Calm down. Oh god, why did I do this? It’s like an alcoholic volunteering to review five different varieties of vodka, and then write a review of his stay in a ditch on the side of the road. E para promover o produto e mostrar todos os ingredientes naturais que são utilizados para a produção do “Red Bull Cola”, a agência Design Friendship criou uma mala direta em forma de caixa, contendo no interior a disposição de todos os ingredientes naturais que são utilizados para a fabricação do produto.

Gostei. Embora não seja fã de Red Bull, achei bem interessante essa idéia de maleta com os ingredientes utilizados na fabricação do energético.

Schleppender Markterfolg

Meine subjektive Einschätzung sagt, dass die Cola-Erweiterung von Red Bull hierzulande bisher kein großer Markterfolg ist: Ich seh so gut wie niemanden das Zeug trinken. Ab und zu ja, aber für die meisten scheint es keine echte Konkurrenz zu Coca Cola zu sein.

Derzeit werden wohl “weltweit 100 Mio. Dosen jährlich abgefüllt” (= auch verkauft?). Klingt viel – ob es reicht um das Ziel zu erreichen, in 4 Jahren “genauso viel Umsatz wie Red Bull selbst zu machen” ist fraglich.

Kokain-Spuren – Fluch oder Segen?

Nun scheinen die Dosen aus vielen deutschen Supermarkt-Regalen verschwunden zu sein:
es wurden minimale Spuren von Kokain entdeckt.

So eine Auslistung und die Publicity dazu könnte natürlich das Aus bedeuten:
Auch nachdem das ganze wissenschaftlich als unbedenklich deklariert wurde, bleiben viele deutsche Regale wohl weiterhin ohne Red Bull Cola Dosen.

Es könnte natürlich auch die Initialzündung zum Erfolg sein:
Die Red Bull Cola ist (trotz ihrer Natürlichkeit und dem Bionade-Spirit) ein eher “normales” Produkt  über das man nach dem ersten Hype nicht mehr groß reden wollte. Aber wenn da Kokain drin ist, könnte das eine klare Differenzierung zur braven Coca-Cola sein…

Laut diesem Blogpost geben Szenegastronomen in Österreich eine Vervierfachung der Umsätze nach Bekanntwerden der Kokain-Spuren an.

Neu ist das ganze freilich nicht
Red Bull’s Erfolg basierte ja auch auf gigantischer Mundpropaganda, die die geheimnisvollen unbekannten Inhaltsstoffe generierten. Auch Red Bull war in Deutschland anfangs verboten und wurde “heimlich” importiert.

Kokain-Spuren in der Cola – mit diesem Problem hatte Coca-Cola früher auch zu kämpfen. In dem Buch “For God, country and Coca-Cola” heißt es, dass der Konzern Jahre brauchte, bis er auch die letzten Spuren ausschließen konnte . Von offizieller Seite wurde die Existenz von Kokain-Spuren stets bestritten.

About a year ago, the makers of Red Bull, the famous caffeine-loaded energy drink, decided to come out with a soda, unsurprisingly named Red Bull Cola. The shared name implied the same big kick. But could the cola’s boost – supposedly “100% natural” – come from something else? Officials in Germany worry that they’ve found the answer – cocaine. And now they have prohibited the soda’s sale in six states across the country and may recommend a nation-wide ban.

“The [Health Institute in the state of North Rhine Westphalia] examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine,” Bernhard Kuehnle, head of the food safety department at Germany’s federal ministry for consumer protection, told the German press on Sunday. According to this analysis, the 0.13 micrograms of cocaine per can of the drink does not pose a serious health threat – you’d have to drink 12,000 liters of Red Bull Cola for negative affects to be felt – but it was enough to cause concern. Kuehnle’s agency is due to give its final verdict on Wednesday when experts publish their report.

If all night partying in Sin City and the caffeine and sugar chaser in Red Bull drinks in the wee morning hours doesn’t kill you, maybe the cocaine will. 

Red Bull has long been a preferred drink of choice for Las Vegas partiers, and widely distributed in the United States, either used in mixed drinks or just swigged right out of the can.  That’s why last year Red Bull deemed fit to launch their sister drink, Red Bull Cola, after a splashy Las Vegas launch.  

It’s a cola-flavored spin-off to the popular Swiss-made Red Bull energy drink, marketing itself as “Strong & Natural,” containing only natural ingredients such as lemon, ginger and kola nut.  Coca-Cola lists only “natural flavors” on the can’s label. The company historically has kept its ingredients a secret- until now. 

The rub is that it also been found to contain coca leaf- coming from the same plant that supplies cocaine.   

“Decocainized coca leaf extracts are used as flavoring in food products around the world and are considered to be safe,” Red Bull said in a released statement, citing a U.S. Food and Drug Administration code that lists decocainized coca leaf as a safe, natural extractive. 

Officials in Germany are not swallowing those assurances. Six German states – half of Germany’s population – have now banned the drink and pulled the can off their shelves after a German health institute recently took a sampling of Red Bull Simply Cola, using a highly sophisticated method of testing. The sample results tested positive for cocaine — albeit a tiny 0.13 micrograms in one can.  Although 12,000 liters would need to be drunk to feel any effect, that was enough to cause concern in Germany, where the country’s strict federal consumer protection agency is doing more tests. 

Red Bull management, based in the Austrian city of Salzberg, counters the allegations saying it’s really not a big deal.  It’s not the white powdery stuff; it won’t get you high; it won’t hurt you. But they ”take the German authority’s concerns seriously” and had an independent institute test Red Bull Simply Cola, which found that cocaine was not detectable in the drink.  Furthermore, they said, the German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment found the drink’s ingredients posed no health risks and no risk of “undesired pharmacological effects including, any potential narcotic effects.” 

Meanwhile, the FDA wasn’t aware of any complaints about the drink, nor does it have plans to order a ban in this country.  “We’re aware of this news report but do not have any additional information at this time,” said FDA spokeswoman Susan Cruzan. 

Bottom’s up!  Try your gambling luck and gulp Red Bull Simply Cola’s in Las Vegas like water!

According to a recent AFP report, officials in Hong Kong are claiming that there were trace amounts of cocaine in a recent shipment of 18,000 bottles of the energy drink.  Taiwanese officials say they found yeyo in cans of Red Bull Cola, Sugar Free Red Bull and the original version. The folks at Red Bull say that the government’s claims are false.

Who do you believe? This isn’t the first time I have heard that this was a possibility. Supposedly Germany had issues with Red Bull for the same reasons. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out since Red Bull dominates the global energy drink market.

Traces of cocaine, as much as 0.03µg/L, have been found in a shipment of Red Bull from Austria to Taiwan. According to the Central News Agency, the Department of Health in Taiwan decided to investigate the energy drink after seeing “reports from Germany that a different cola drink made by the same manufacturer was found to contain 0.4 µg/L of cocaine” (see this Red Bull Cola liar of an ad that claims “100% pure cola. Without chemicals”). Although at a concentration of 0.03µg/L cocaine would not cause significant harm to the body, this still comes as an f-ed up piece of news, and the energy drink has been recalled as “[Taiwanese] law prohibits any traces whatsoever of banned drugs in food products.” Makes you wonder what else’s been laced… besides Coca Cola and McDonald’s; if you’ve seen this video (this is only one of many), there is no question that something fishy’s going on there.

Erst ab einem Verzehr von 4,8 Milligramm Kokain pro Liter und Tag treten negative Effekte auf. Allerdings wurde in einer in Nordrhein-Westfalen genommenen Probe nur 0,4 Mikrogramm gefunden. Für eine Gesundheitsgefährdung müssten demnach pro Tag 12.000 Liter Red Bull Cola getrunken werden.

Die Drogenbeauftragte der Unions-Bundestagsfraktion, Maria Eichhorn (CSU), nannte gleichwohl das Verbot des Getränks in mehreren Bundesländern richtig. “Selbst wenn die Untersuchung des Bundesamtes für Risikobewertung ergeben sollte, dass die Red Bull Cola nicht gesundheitsgefährdend ist, kann es nicht angehen, dass sich Lebensmittel in Verkaufsregalen befinden, die unter das Betäubungsmittelgesetz fallen, weil sie harte Drogen wie Kokain enthalten”, erklärte Eichhorn.

Besonders problematisch ist auch der hohe Zuckergehalt, der zu schlimmsten Problemen der Zähne führen kann. Wer jahrelang überzuckerte Getränke zu sich nimmt, der braucht irgendwann jede Menge Zahnprothesen Info.

Six German states have banned Red Bull after lab tests turned up trace amounts of coca leaf extracts in the beverage. According to authorities, the substance requires the beverage to be classified as a narcotic, requiring a license for sale. (Of course, even Coca-Cola didn’t become entirely cocaine-free until 1929.) (Red Bull) said coca leaf extracts were used worldwide as a natural flavouring, and that its own tests had found no traces of cocaine.

The illegal cocaine alkaloid – one of 10 found in coca and representing only 0.8% of the plant’s chemical make-up – is chemically removed before use, as mandated by international anti-narcotics agencies.

“There is no scientific basis for this ban on Red Bull Cola because the levels of cocaine found are so small,” Fritz Soergel, the head of the Institute for Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Research in Nuremberg, Bavaria, told Time magazine.

“And it’s not even cocaine itself. According to the tests we carried out, it’s a non-active degradation product with no effect on the body. If you start examining lots of other drinks and food so carefully, you’d find a lot of surprising things.”

Vários estados alemães suspenderam a venda de Red Bull Cola por conter cocaína. Esta bebida não está à venda em Portugal e, segundo a porta-voz da empresa, não está prevista a sua comercialização. Mas acrescenta que extraíram o composto em causa ao extracto vegetal de folhas de coca, presente em outros alimentos, que é “vendido legalmente”. O extracto vegetal de folha de coca é um aromatizante que, segundo os responsáveis da Red Bull, “é usado em bens alimentares em quase todo o mundo e é considerado seguro”. Não é aquela a opinião das autoridades sanitárias alemães, nomeadamente, as de Renania, de Hesse e de Turingia. “A bebida viola as leis da alimentação”, diz Thomaz Schulz, porta-voz do departamento de saúde de Turingia, citado na imprensa alemã. Técnicos do Instituto para a Saúde e Trabalho de Renania encontraram restos de cocaína provenientes de folhas de coca tratadas, o que foi suficiente para considerarem que a Red Bull Cola não pode ser considerada um alimento e, como tal, deve ser precisar de uma autorização especial para ser comercializado. A legislação portuguesa não define quais os aromas que podem ser utilizados na composição dos refrigerantes, categoria onde se enquadra o Red Bull e as restantes bebidas energéticas. Apenas existe uma lista de aditivos proibidos. A representante da empresa em Portugal diz que a Red Bull Cola apenas é vendida na Áustria, Alemanha, Suíça, Reino Unido, Itália, Espanha, Rússia e Estados Unidos.

Tony, I think you have a little something on your face

As you know, my boy E sometimes has to work the graveyard shift.  So, when I am getting ready to leave, he is just getting back from the all night grind.  Last night was particularly brutal, as he worked from 6pm to 6am.  With that type of schedule coupled with the fact that it rotates between grave and normal day shift, you can see why his body would be going crazy.

So, as I ran into him this morning, we were talking about what he was doing to stay awake.  E lamented the fact that he was feeling wiped out about 4am, so he drank a Mountain Dew to help fight off sleep.  Normally, this would be a 5 hour energy drink, but he thought that he could beat off the rush of Dew faster, helping him go to sleep sooner when he got home.  Well E, don’t drink Red Bull Cola if you are trying to get to bed.

The more popular Red Bull, dubbed the ‘clubbers’ drink,’ is often mixed with vodka. It contains caffeine, vitamins, and sugar which, the company claims, kick-starts the body’s metabolism and keeps people alert.

Red Bull Cola could be banned in Germany – after traces of cocaine are found in it

Germany is considering a nationwide ban on the high-energy drink Red Bull Cola after traces of cocaine were found in it.

Authorities in the states of Hesse and North-Rhine Westphalia have ordered retailers to stop selling the beverage – which is available in the UK.

The consumer ministries in the two states confirmed they had ordered retailers to pull the drink off their shelves after a food safety institute in North-Rhine Westphalia found the drug in samples.

‘The institute examined Red Bull Cola in an elaborate chemical process and found traces of cocaine,’ said Bernhard Kuehnle, head of the food safety department at the federal ministry for consumer protection.

Now, you might have a view of crackheads as being nice and harmless, like          Tyrone here… But crackheads are not all fun and games children.  Don’t do drugs! (That is our PSA, so we can get off probation for drugs…just kidding…)

Authorities said the cocaine levels do not pose a health threat but are not permitted in foodstuffs.

The investigation found the drink to contain a de-cocainized extract of coca leaf in the drink.

That means the drink cannot be classified as a foodstuff but as a narcotic and needs a special licence, authorities said.

Giant German retail group Rewe had already issued orders to remove the fizzy drink from its shops. Wilhelm Deitermann, spokesman for the North-Rhine Westphalia consumer ministry said he expected most – if not all – other German states to follow suit and ban the drink.

Red Bull Cola has protested the action. ‘De-cocainized extract of coca leaf is used worldwide in foods as a natural flavouring,’ said a spokesman.

Coca leaf doesnt travel very well...that is why I make it into cocaine!

The company added that Red Bull Cola as well as other food that contains coca leaf extract is considered safe in the EU as well as in the US.

I knew something was up with this drink.  We had a bunch of promo Red Bull Colas and one of my debaters started drinking one, and he kept coming back for more, like he was a crackhead!  I knew something had to be in that drink.
