We have heard so many different theories on what to do with the Big 12. Ranging from disbanding them to just making it one big conference. It is fairly obvious even to the oblivious eye that something needs to be done in this regards. The Big 12 North has become the sisters of the poor as of late, and rarely presents a challenge to the teams in the South Division. If you want a good example of this just look at the SEC, where you have #1 vs #2 or #3, instead of #2 or #3 vs unranked or # twenty something. If you rank the Big 12 based on where the play has been over the past couple of years.

Let’s just take a look at some different ways to where we can make the Big 12 a little more interesting.

Currently the Big 12 would probably be ranked something like this if you were to look at them from top to bottom. The Top 2 are a given, and they can be switched around whichever way you like it with either Oklahoma or Texas at the top. The rest can be thrown around a lot with either Texas Tech and OSU at 3 and 4. The Big 12 North finally strikes with Missouri , Nebraska , and Kansas at 5, 6, and 7. Texas A&M would come in at 8 followed by Kansas State, Baylor, Iowa State and Colorado.

This would leave it looking like Texas, Oklahoma, Tech, OSU, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, A&M, KState, Baylor, Iowa State, and Colorado. If you the Big 12 would realign their divisions and they could call them whatever they would like East and West, or even something different. It really doesn’t matter. However in one division you would have Texas, Texas Tech, Nebraska, Texas A&M, Baylor and Colorado, and the other division would be OU, OSU, Missouri, Kansas, Kansas State, and Iowa State. To cover the OU and Texas RRS they would still play each other on a regular basis as one of their 3 games that they would play against the other divisions teams. So, instead of being 3 games like it currently is with it switching every 3rd yr, OU and Texas would play each other, and then have 2 remaining games against the other division. The only downfall would that it might be 5 years before they play one of the teams in the other division. However, the likely hood of an Ou vs Texas rematch in the Big 12 championship would have a lot more at stake than say a Texas vs Nebraska CG. Even worse it was close to being a Texas vs Kansas State title match. Either way you cut it, there would be a lot more seats sold at the Big 12 championship game, and you would once again have a game that TV viewers might actually watch as well, and we all know the entire country would definitely tune into see a rematch of OU vs Texas. The bottom line is something has got to change with the Big 12 before it wastes away into Obsolete Land, just like the Big East and ACC..

Sooner RB DeMarco Murray

First Jermaine Gresham before the season even started which is a huge blow to the red zone threat for the Sooners. Then Sam Bradford in the first half of the season opener against BYU and once agian against Texas. Then Ryan Broyles against Miami, our leading receptionest. Then Trent Williams against Texas, our only senior offencive lineman. Wow, hopefully this will stop – oh wait, I forgot that not only did Williams get hurt against Texas, but also our leading rusher DEMARCO MURRAY!! Murray hurt his ankel in the first quarter in the Red River Rivalry. Murray leads the Sooner with 403 rushing yards and also has 19 receptions for 261 yards, second behind Broyles and Brandon Caleb. This means our starting RB for against Kanas is Chris Brown, which by no means is a bad thing. Brown has grown to be an outstanding running back over the years with the Sooners. He led OU with 23 rushing yards against Texas and has 361 total this season. Sooner offencive coordinator Kevin Wilson said earlier this week that he would be comfortable with using freshman running backs Jermie Calhoun and Jonathan Miller to tag along. Now I bring you a question: When in any college franchise in the past 150 years have we seen so many impact players get hurt and make the season go from returning the the National Championship, to looking foward to the Insight Bowl. The winner gets a slap in the face because it has never happened.

After coming away with a victory in a game controlled by defense and turnovers, the Texas Longhorns continue their run towards a National Title with a 16-13 win over hated rival Oklahoma.

In last year’s offensive powered Red River Rivalry game, Texas and Oklahoma combined for 4 touchdowns and 31 points in the second quarter alone. This year, the two powerhouses combined for 29 points in the entire game. Alone, Texas showed the country that their No.3 ranking isn’t just because of their offense.

Texas QB Colt McCoy and WR Marquise Goodwin celebrate their third quarter touchdown in a 16-13 victory over Oklahoma(AP Photo/Tony Gutierrez)

Oklahoma averaged 432 yards while putting up 31 points a game before playing Texas. A corner blitz knocked Hesiman Trophy winner Sam Bradford out of the game, forcing Head Coach Bob Stoops to put freshman quarterback Landry Jones in the ball game. Jones threw for 250 yards, but 2 fourth quarter interceptions costed the Sooners any chance of an upset. Texas forced and recovered 3 fumbles as well.

Texas quarterback Colt McCoy didn’t look fantastic, but did enough to beat OU for the third time in his career. Key runs by Cody Johnson and Foswhitt Whittaker boosted the Longhorns scoring oppurtunities. The 16 point is the fewest amount of points by Texas since 2007, when they only mustered up 7 points against Texas A&M and Ohio State.

With two big road games against Missouri and Oklahoma State, Texas’ defense will need to play just as well as it did in Dallas. Oklahoma State is 8th in the country in scoring, but have struggled defensively this season. Kansas and rival Texas A&M end their regular season schedule. Texas winning out equals a shot at the National Championship.

Continuing with tradition, midshipmen in UT’s Naval ROTC ran with a game ball from Austin to Dallas for Saturday’s game against Oklahoma. Shortly after arriving at the Cotton Bowl the Longhorn midshipmen met their counterparts from Oklahoma at a city park for their annual flag football game. The Longhorns got their seventh straight win in the Texas-Oklahoma game almost no one knows about.

Let me preface this post by referring the gentle reader to 2 truly magnificent summaries of the events that transpired last Saturday afternoon in Dallas:

“2009 Oklahoma Sooners Post-Mortem”

“The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly – Texas 16, Oklahoma 13″

Go check them out, but here are the thoughts of a random UT alum/fan watching the game from the comfort of his home in Houston:

Due to a Saturday morning family tradition (grocery shopping), I missed most of the first half. No worries I taped the game and after watching the first half, I’m kind of glad I didn’t watch it live because I easily avoided shaving 2 to 3 years off of my life.

I know that Texas’ offensive coordinator Greg Davis’ play-calling is well, offensive but seriously speaking is it not obvious that his spontaneous flashes of “brilliance” (running the Wildhorn after repeatedly punching the OU D in the mouth) have the great potential to cost his team a shot at the National title?

Before the season is out, will we see Will Muschamp go Buddy Ryan on the strangely Kevin Gilbride-like Greg Davis?

Stay classy OU player. Defensive lineman Jeremy Beal’s bush league attempts to hurt Colt McCoy at the end of the game seem to be what a Bob Stoops-led team is about.

Speaking of Stoops, here is a sobering thought: Bob Stoops has 6 conference titles, Mack Brown only has one. Hopefully Mack adds to his grand total this season.

Earl Thomas, consider yourself “absolved” of what happened last year in Lubbock. Led the Horns in tackles, 2 tackles for a loss, 1 forced fumble, and if not for a meddling teammate, should have scored recovering the fumble he forced. How clutch is Texas’ safety Earl Thomas? Like the guy occupying the bottom half of this pic, he leaves it all on the field [Thomas' photo credit: Rodolfo Gonzalez/AMERICAN-STATESMAN]:

No this is not Roy Williams making the acrobatic grabs he was known for at the 40 acres, this is another #4-wearing Williams intercepting a ball which OU QB Landry Jones was throwing out-of-bounds.
and oh yeah, Mr. Williams knocked OU’s starting QB, Sam Bradford, out of the game early on.

Speaking of Bradford, I honestly felt and feel bad for the guy. He probably should have left for the NFL after last season. Though, he is a Sooner, I can’t get behind displays such as this (photo credit: Billy Smith II/Houston Chronicle):

Don’t know what is wrong with Colt McCoy but he arguably made the most important play of the whole game, getting in the way of the man who had just picked him off and was en route to rivalry glory (photo credit: Ricardo B. Brazziell/AMERICAN-STATESMAN),

Up next for the ‘Horns, the Missouri Tigers. Here’s hoping that the offense finds a way to justify UT’s #3 ranking.

Last but certainly not least, here’s to another season of this:

It wasn’t pretty but who cares. The 6-0 Texas Longhorns are in prime position to play for the Nation

It wasn’t pretty but who cares. The 6-0 Texas Longhorns are in prime position to play for the National Championship after a 16-13 grudge match victory over the Oklahoma losers. Muschamp and the defense were phenomenal on a day when Colt and Co. failed to gel on offense.

Quick thoughts on the game…

No one deserves the future HC job at Texas more than Will Muschamp. Good lord. The defense was stout as hell. -16 rushing yards? No, that is not a typo. Kindle and Lamar played great up front while the rest of the group was relentless.

Something is wrong with Colt. I don’t know if it’s the awful offensive line, or a lack of a 2nd comfort blanket (since no Quan Cosby) or he can’t get comfortable with Greg Davis’ retarded offensive schemes. Shit, maybe he needs to stop lifting weights. The good news is he didn’t have to be good on Saturday. But he def. lost any chance of the Heisman.

Future star WR: Marquis Goodwin. The little man can fly. Great TD which stole all of OU’s momentum. Only mistake was his miscue on the final drive resulting in a McCoy interception. He is only a freshman though.

Does Greg Davis watch film? This was the worst offensive performance by the Longhorns I have ever witnessed. As we learned last week, without a running game, you are completely effed. It finally started clicking in the 2nd half, but seriously, should it take that long? Fozzy stepped up which was nice. And Cody Johnson was abusing Sooners late in the game.

Overall the game was painful to watch. Texas was the beneficiary of five freaking TO’s resulting in only 1 TD. That has to improve. But the weather was beautiful, the beer was cold, and food was great. Despite our cab driver taking a 45-minute freaking detour, my ticket arriving at the close of the 1st quarter, and massive crowds, it was a brilliant weekend. Oh yeah, watching Sooner fans sink into severe depression was nice too.

It’s 8:45 . . . and OU still sucks.

Saturday, October 17
11:00a Central
ABC

It’s here. The Red River Rivalry. It’s Texas/o-Who? weekend at the Texas State Fair Grounds in Dallas, and “Big Tex” will groan from his pedestal that this year’s contest will once again pit two highly-competitive Big 12 football teams on the gridiron. It’s sure to be another doozy in Dallas.

There is the potential to ramble on for weeks (and 364 bragging days after) about this game, but no matter what words fill this space, the blood and guts spilled at the Cotton Bowl on Saturday will be worth all the glory to the winner.

Although o-Who? has lost two non-conference games already this season, they remain in the hunt for the Big 12 South title if they can win on Saturday – what would amount to a key win in an otherwise somber beginning to the season. Texas, on the other hand, marks this as a “must-win” on the calendar, as the ‘Horns are chasing redemption for last year’s duping in both the Big 12 and the BCS championships. o-Who? quarterback Sam Bradford has returned from his shoulder injury, and Texas fans are still waiting to see the 2008 Colt McCoy show up at quarterback for the Longhorns. Despite those storylines, this game shapes up to be a defensive battle – two high-profile offenses against two stout defenses, as both teams rank in the top 10 nationally in defense, Texas at #4 and o-Who? at #9. While the running game remains lost for the ‘Horns, o-Who? brings two legit running backs to table – and, the team who rules the running game usually wins this game, despite the aerial assault by both squads.

Eyes Of TX will defer to the inundation of Red River Rivalry coverage in the media this week to help tell the story this week.

To be clear, Eyes Of TX has absolutely no love for the crimson and cream, “BCS Bob” Stoops, “boomer sooner,” pop guns, land thieves, Ruf/Neks, or schooners. It’s game day, and it’s safe to say: “It’s 2:21a PT, and o-Who? still sucks.”

Let’s make it four out of the last five, ‘Horns!

This Week
Eyes Of TX’s Prediction
Texas 20, o-Who? 14

CFBBuzz: These are our weeky picks. Oklahoma vs. Texas One of four really good games this weekend. T

CFBBuzz: These are our weeky picks.

Oklahoma vs. Texas

One of four really good games this weekend. The Sooners think they have a real shot at winning this one because of how good Sam Bradford looked against Baylor last week. However, I think that Texas is on a mission to get to the national title game and this one won’t slow them down. Texas in a close one.

USC vs. Notre Dame

Most people are giving Notre Dame too big a shot at winning this one in my opinion. I look for Taylor Mays and the Trojan defense to shut down Jimmy Clausen an lead USC to an easy victory.

Virginia Tech vs. Georgia Tech

Another really good game this weekend, features Georgia Tech’s option offense against Virginia Tech’s stingy defense. I think that the option has the power to confuse VT just enough where they might have a chance to win. I’ll take the Yellow Jackets by a field goal.

South Carolina vs. Alabama

The marquee match-up in the SEC this weekend might not be a good one at all. Alabama has been the most dominating team in college football this year and I think they win this one easy.

Missouri vs. Oklahoma State

Missouri is quietly a solid football team; and Oklahoma State is still trying to sort out their off-field problem with Dez Bryant. As for the game, I think it will most definetly be a shootout, but it could be so tight that it comes down to a field. I like Missouri to pull of the minor upset.

NSO: This is what we’re watching this weekend.

Oklahoma vs. Texas

The Red River Rivalry takes place at the Texas State fair on Saturday at noon eastern. Sam Bradford will play in this one as the Sooners look to salvage their season with a win. For a prediction check out cfbbuzz.wordpress.com tomorrow morning.

USC vs. Notre Dame

If Jimmy Clausen plays well he may be able to solitify himself as a ligitmate Heisman Trophy contender. However, the Trojans have the best defense that he will see this year by a long shot. For a prediction check out cfbbuzz.wordpress.com Saturday morning.

MLB Playoffs

The second game of the ALCS is scheduled for Saturday and the third game of the NLCS is scheduled for Sunday night; both should be worth watching.

NASCAR Racing at Lowes

The mid way point in the Chase is also the only night race in the Chase. Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart will look to close in on Jimmie Johnson as Juan Montoya will look to keep pace. This one should be good throughout.

Giants vs. Saints

The only match-up this weekend of two unbeaten teams. The Saints have the better offense and the Giants have the better defense; so this one should be interesting. Check back Sunday morning for a pick on this one.

Oh Friday, how I love you.

Today’s been better than yesterday for the most part. I did have to report a couple of stolen mice from one of my labs, which sucked. But we’ll get replacements for them eventually. Also, I got to scan security camera tapes while ago, which was kinda fun (even though we didn’t find anything). Other than that, it’s been an okay morning. Even the rude person from yesterday is in a slightly better mood today.

After school, Jenn and I are gonna head straight to Target and work on our registry there. That’s gonna be a fun one, can’t wait to see what we can find there. Then we’re going to Dave & Buster’s after that to celebrate our friend Scottie’s birthday. We’re not going to spend any money playing games, but we’re at least going to eat and hang out. I did just find a D&B Power Card in my wallet, so maybe we’ll be able to play some games, at least.

Tomorrow, we’re going to the State Fair, aka Frah’d Saturday! Can’t wait to try the new goodies this year. The one I’m most excited about is the Green Goblin, but I’m also looking forward to trying the fried butter and the fried peaches ‘n cream. And of course, Jenn and I must get our Fletcher’s cornydawgs. I can taste the mustard-covered goodness already. Mmmmmm. Also, this year, we’re going to take the DART there instead of driving. We’re betting that since it’s Texas/OU weekend, taking DART will be a whole lot easier than attempting to find parking out there. We’ve gone on Texas/OU weekend before, and while it is indeed as chaotic as it sounds, it’s also a whole lot of fun to see all the orange and crimson filling up the Fair and the Cotton Bowl. Fun thing to do: Ride the Skyway during the game. The view you get of the inside of the Cotton Bowl is freakin’ AWESOME:

State Fair 2007

I was actually contacted one time by Wikipedia to use that picture for an article. I think it was an article on the history of the Red River Rivalry, but it doesn’t look like it’s there anymore. Makes sense, they definitely found some better pictures. Haha!

After all that’s over with, we’ve got church on Sunday morning. We were supposed to be having a huge service under a tent on the land we bought to build our new church on. But apparently, the pastor went out there this week and walked out into the field, and sank about ankle-deep into mud. So it’ll be church as usual (minus Sunday School) this Sunday, and the tent service has been pushed back to November 1st. That’s also the weekend that our new music minister starts, so it should be one freakin’ sweet weekend. The Lord works in mysterious ways.

Anyway, that’s about all for now. Don’t forget to check out the For Sale section, still got lots of toys available. Have a great weekend, friend!

The Cotton Bowl: Half orange, half red.

The best college game this weekend — and perhaps the best game of the regular season — will be the first one on the slate on Saturday.

Bitter rivals Texas and Oklahoma will kick off at 11 a.m. Central time on ABC.

Pundits around the country have called this the game of the season, not only because of the heated rivalry between the two schools, but also because this game is usually a major decider in both the Big 12 and the national title picture.

Five of the last nine Red River Shootouts involved one of the participants in the BCS title game. One or both of these teams has been ranked in the national top 25 in 60 of the last 65 meetings

It’s big.

But you don’t have to tell that to people around here. You certainly don’t have to tell it to the guy who had some awful things done to his man region because he wore a Longhorns shirt into a bar in Oklahoma City.

Nor do you have to tell it to the folks who noticed that Texas put up a banner at its facilities saying that they were the 2008 Big 12 champions. (They didn’t even play in the championship game…)

This year’s edition of the game has third-ranked Texas looking to stay undefeated after a perfect start to the season.

The Longhorns’ top two running backs were injured in a lackluster victory over Colorado last week, which means the Horns might have to make do with a one-dimensional offense.

The No. 20 Sooners come into the game hoping to prove they’re better than their record. Oklahoma has lost twice, but the losses were to No. 9 Miami and and No. 18 BYU by a total of two points.

Quarterback Sam Bradford has returned from an early-season shoulder injury, and OU looks ready to go.

When the teams kick off on Saturday, who will you be pulling for?

Other games on Saturday: Arkansas at No. 1 Florida, 2:30 p.m., CBS; No. 6 USC at No. 25 Notre Dame, 2:30 p.m., NBC; No. 4 Virginia Tech at No. 19 Georgia Tech, 5 p.m., ESPN2.

It’s Friday! Hooray! I’d much rather be curled up in bed with some hot cocoa and a book today, but alas, I have been out doing the work thing, going to lunch and running errands. The next thing on my list today is writing up my “Seven Quick Takes” for y’all. I really enjoyed it last week, and since I gave up my regular “Not Me! Monday” post (for various reasons — but it may make an appearance here and there in the future), I wanted to still have at least one weekly feature.

  1. It’s a nasty day out. It was in the low 30s when I went to work, and soon after I got to work, it started raining. Brr! I’m just glad I wore my hair wavy today. Since my hair naturally has a slight wave, it’s always a relief when I haven’t gone to the trouble of straightening my hair on a rainy day. Besides, I can’t really straighten my hair right now. My CHI smells like burning wires when I plug it in. I’m scared to use it, and we can’t really afford another $100 straightener right now.

2. Béni eats his food way too fast. This morning he gagged and spit up 7 or 8 pieces of kibble. We already water down his food in an attempt to get him to eat slower. Does anyone else have any suggestions in helping our puppy slow his eating down so he doesn’t choke?

3. I am taking a sewing class this weekend. The last time I tried to sew was in middle school under my mom’s tutelage. I made a tan spaghetti-strapped dress and a sleeveless shirt that buttoned up the black. The dress was cute, and in theory, the shirt was as well. However, the print choices I made were tragic – the shirt especially so. It looked like a dish towel. Hopefully, I won’t make such horrid choices this time around.

4. I walk to work. I wear nice shoes to work. I do not wear nice shoes to walk to work. My feet will hurt if I walk in most of my nice shoes, and I can walk faster in flip flops or sneakers. I am sick and tired of seeing people judge me for wearing flip flops or sneakers in my work outfit. I am walking to work, people. I change when I get to my office. Stop judging me. John thought I was being paranoid, but a couple weeks ago, when one of the post security guards told me I needed to change my shoes, John realized people really have been judging my for my walk-to-work footwear selections. Don’t people have anything better to do?

5. Um, I know I’ve already mentioned that it’s cold today. But, it’s COLD TODAY. It’s been cold all week. It’s mid-October. In Texas, it’s still in the upper 80s and maybe even hitting 90 a few days. That’s the other extreme, I guess, but I much prefer it. This is too ridiculously cold too early. I don’t think it was this cold this time last year. In fact, I know it wasn’t this cold at this time last year. I have pictures from the end of October last year, and I wasn’t shivering in fur-lined boots with a wool peacoat on. I was wearing a light long-sleeved shirt. This.is.ridiculous.

6. Béni is the sweetest dog ever. He always sleeps on his little doggie bed on the floor next to John’s side of our bed. Last night, however, he insisted on falling asleep next to my side of the bed. I am fairly certain this is because he knew I was not feeling good at all. In fact, I was writhing in pain and had a heating pad on my tummy. Yeah, yeah, being a girl has it’s downs.

7. It’s 1:52 PM in Germany and OU STILL SUCKS!
I’m so excited about the game this weekend! We’ll be watching it live at one of John’s co-worker’s homes. Hook ‘em!

The October air may be cooling but college football action will provide all the heat fans need this

The October air may be cooling but college football action will provide all the heat fans need this weekend.

There are five different matchups between ranked opponents and a plethora of engaging storylines that could lead to this being the most compelling Saturday thus far. Well, so long as Lou Holtz isn’t in the booth for any of those games.

Here are five hot topics heading into Saturday’s action:

1) Can Notre Dame top USC for the first time since 2001?

This traditionally back-and-forth rivalry has taken a turn for the lopsided since what was then Bob Davies’ squad beat Pete Carroll’s Trojans 27-16. USC has won seven straight against the Fighting Irish and only the game in 2005 was close.

The last two meetings have been especially embarrassing for Notre Dame and the perpetually-on-the-hot-seat Charlie Weis as USC has won by a combined score of 76-3. This once-proud Notre Dame is now just another easy mark in the win column for USC.

SANTA CLAUSEN MUST DELIVER

Not so fast, though.

This is easily the weakest USC team of the decade. There’s no Carson Palmer, no Matt Leinart, no Reggie Bush, no Steve Smith, no Keith Rivers, no Ray Maualuga. The Trojans still have tailback Joe McNight and a solid defense, but this is not the juggernaut of years past. Notre Dame, on the other hand, are experiencing somewhat of a resurgence.
Quarterback Jimmy Clausen has entered his name into the Heisman race by being the highest-rated passer in the country through six weeks and leading his team to a 4-1 mark. He’s also got dynamic weapons on offense with receivers Golden Tate and Kyle Rudolph.

If the Fighting Irish are to beat the Trojans, this is the year.

Weis’ job depends on it.

2) Will Texas exact revenge on Oklahoma?

This game lost some of its luster when Sam Bradford went down with a shoulder injury and the Sooners fell to BYU and Miami, but make no mistake — it’s still the Red River Rivalry. It’s still the Big 12’s biggest guns shooting up the Cotton Bowl. It’s still Bradford vs. McCoy and its still got BCS title game implications.

At least for Texas.

And Bradford and Co. would love nothing more than to spoil that opportunity for their border rival. A border rival that has had some trouble getting started in recent weeks. The Longhorns spotted Colorado a 14-10 halftime lead before receiver Jordan Shipley went off and the Texas defense clamped down en route to the 38-14 win. Against Wyoming, Texas held a precarious 13-10 lead before the second-half rout was on.

THE GREAT DIVIDE

It can ill-afford to give the Sooners any such cushion. The two-headed rushing monster of Demarco Murray and Chris Brown accounts for over 700 yards and six touchdowns through as many games, and Bradford has weapons through the air with Ryan Broyles and Brandon Caleb.

The matchup to watch is Oklahoma’s Brian Jackson — three INTs and 19 tackles — on Jordan Shipley. If the senior wideout has a big day Texas will run away with the game.

3) Can South Carolina shock the world?

The tallest task of the week belongs to the Gamecocks, who travel to Tuscaloosa for a primetime showdown with the nation’s No. 2 team in BCS championship hopeful Alabama.

The Crimson Tide have looked every bit the number they’re ranked as, but their competition has not put up much of a fight since the season-opening come-from-behind victory over Virginia Tech. Jevan Snead hit Alabama’s defensive backs more than his wide receivers last week and Kentucky was also done in by interceptions.

South Carolina is far less cavalier with the football.

The Gamecocks have turned the ball over just seven times in six games and the much-improved Stephen Garcia has nine TDs and almost 1,300 yards to his credit so far this season. Bolstered by tailbacks Kenny Miles and Jarvis Giles, the Gamecocks have a formidable offense and a defense that has allowed three touchdowns in a game just twice.

It won’t be easy, but No. 22 South Carolina has the capacity to ruin Alabama’s homecoming.

4) What in the hell happened to Jahvid Best?

The junior from California came into the season a Heisman contender and now sits outside the top-20 in rushing yards. The precipitous fall began in a 42-3 lambasting at the hands of then-unranked Oregon. Best managed a meager 55 yards on 16 carries. The next game wasn’t any better. Best managed just 47 yards on 14 carries as the Golden Bears fell 30-3 to USC.

A CONTENDER SUBMERGES

His season isn’t over, though, and he’s got a chance to re-enter himself back in the Heisman picture.

It starts against cross-town rival UCLA, who has allowed a 100-yard rusher in each of the last two weeks. Look for Best to run rampant on a defense that hasn’t stopped anyone since a 23-9 win over Kansas State.

5) What does the rest of the season hold for Bobby Bowden?

Speaking of precipitous falls, Tallahassee’s favorite son has fallen out of favor with boosters and some fans in the wake of a 2-4 start and an 0-3 record in the ACC. This mercurial Seminoles team can’t seem to figure it out from week-to-week and there’s rumblings of Bowden having lost his players.

But as much as it looks otherwise, the wheels haven’t fallen off for Florida State. Its four losses are by a combined 26 points and another ranked team doesn’t appear on the schedule until a trip to the Swamp to play No. 1 Florida in late November.

The Seminoles’ offense is there; the No. 12-ranked unit in the country has been led by an on-point Christian Ponder — 1,781 yards and nine touchdowns to one INT — and the speedy Ty Jones.

It’s the porous pass defense that has betrayed the ‘Noles, but if they can shore that up by the end of this season Bowden’s young squad will finish with a winning record and be in great position for the 2010 season.
