Alright, on to the photos!

To kick off my new blog, I want to share with you a series of photos that I captured recently with a good friend. It was great fun getting everything set up just right and experimenting with different techniques to get the shots we wanted.

Here you can see our setup. We’ve got our cameras set up side by side, some flashes, an interesting fabric backdrop, a dish full of water, and a garbage bag to catch the spills and mess we made.

It was a real trial and error process, having to time things just right in order to get a useable shot. Tedious at times, but so worth it. Have a look at the results…..

I think this one is by far, my favourite. The water drop itself is not particularly spectacular or exciting but I am in love with the colours, the depth of field, and the bokeh. Another reason I love this shot so much – it was handheld. With a macro lens.

Artist Artbone on Redbubble made this adorable mash-up of Masters of the Universe and Adventure time called “Power Time”. You can buy it in prints, stickers, phone cases, etc. I Just bought the cover for my iPhone5 and can’t wait for it to come in!

Taking a break from the subject of Triathlon for a moment, I wanted to share with you one of my other great pleasures in life, Landscape Photography. Before the triathlon flame reignited and before I sought out medical treatment for my bipolar, photography was the one thing that could transport me away from the doom and gloom, and convey to me a world that was worth living in. In fact I created my own world through the lens and that made life bearable.

During the end of 2006 I completed my undergraduate studies in computing, which also carried with it a sub major in photojournalism. I did so well in fact that I was asked to apply for honours in visual arts for the following year. I was accepted and so began my dalliances with nature and her moody skies. In actual fact I started my honours year more interested in equine photography than landscapes. I had horses growing up so it seemed like a logical choice.

It was around this time that my personal life started to go pear-shaped. I had been diagnosed originally with bipolar at the end of 2006 and things began to take their toll on me. Thankfully my supervisor was extremely supportive and accepted my frequent absences as part of my trying to understand my illness and find myself again. To say I was lost during that year would be an absolute understatement, but I eventually found myself through photography.

I distinctly remember being sent an email around April. I had missed several classes, in fact my supervisor had not seen me for a couple of months. We had decided that my honours proposal would be on the Arabian horse, but I grew tired of photographing only horses and I began to dabble in landscapes and architecture, more specifically, church architecture. I guess I was hoping to find some kind of spiritual healing or answers from the big Man upstairs.

I ended up piling together a whole heap of prints of my work and I ventured into uni to see my supervisor, convinced that he would think I had well and truly lost the plot. Instead he totally flipped out over them. I apologised for not attending regular classes and keeping in touch and he told me that if that was the sort of work I was going to continue producing I could have all the space I needed. Needless to say I was thrilled with his reaction.

From that point on he continued to encourage me to experiment with my imagery. He also introduced me to the work of an artist called Francesca Woodman whose self portraits again fueled my desire for experimentation behind the lens. I found an abandoned building not far from home and I endeavoured to convey what I was feeling through my photography. There were no words only silent images which spoke volumes and helped me to find my sense of self.

By the end of the year I had amassed a huge volume of work, including the horses, landscapes, churches and self portraits. With my supervisor’s help, somehow I managed to edit out the cliché and mundane, and select the profoundly different and empowering. I put them all together into a collection which would eventually grant me my honours degree. I was so proud of myself. It was the first of many occasions where photography would save me.

Since 2007 my love for photography has grown exponentially. In late 2008 I visited the coast and photographed my first ever low king tide. The rock shelves were covered in vibrant green moss and I was once again transported away from the depression that haunted me, into a land of solitude and serenity. I quickly fell in love with the ocean and its moods, and so it was that seascape photography would join my constantly growing repertoire.

I have now taken over tens of thousands of images since I first played around in the darkroom at uni developing my first black and white film. My love for nature has only grown stronger with time, as have my skills and techniques behind the lens. I still love photographing horses and I still love being out there amongst the elements and tides with just my camera for company. Whenever I look through the lens, it is as if I feel my soul smiling back at me.

And even though for the moment photography has taken a back seat to my training, it is no less important to me now and is certainly no less important to my health and wellbeing than it was back then. I am looking forward to winter approaching as with it comes the end to daylight savings time which means shorter days and earlier sunsets. Although this blog is primarily about my Ironman journey, it would not be complete without the occasional photo expedition.

Detailing the fence

Nothing is less real than realism.  Details are confusing.  It is only by selection, by elimination, by emphasis, that we get at the real meaning of things.

Before we go for today’s walk, the Weekly Photo Challenge is Lost in the Details and I thought I’d take a stab at it.  I actually took this photo while out on my morning walk, before I knew what the challenge would be.  I like the details and texture of the fence, the snow, the wire, the wood slats, and even the fence post off to the left side of the photo.  I don’t know why I keep coming back to this fence and the hay bale it sits on.  I may have enough photos of them now to fill a large room.  Perhaps it’s the wabi-sabi aspect.  I’ve been watching the hay bale and fence slowly erode with time.

A waterfowl morning

The banded goose returned to the pond today.  Now that I know who she is, I wouldn’t mind in the least if she hung around for a while.  Unfortunately, M and I have trained the geese not to stay, and they usually fly off within a few minutes of seeing one of us near the pond.

I’m almost tempted to give her a name.  I’m not sure that’s a good idea.  Attachment to wildlife rarely works out well.

Snow day

It is cloudy with snow flurries today, and very cold.  The wind managed to work its way through all of my layers while I was out for my walk.

Leaf and snow

I’m going to see my granddaughters this weekend.  I can’t think of a better way to spend a weekend than with Emma and Maddy.  I love being a grandma.  There’s nothing else like it.

We had an unusual visitor at the bird feeder today.  This is a critter most people are familiar with at their feeders.  In fact, most people do all that they can to keep them away from the feeders.

Checking to see if it’s safe

We rarely see squirrels out here.  I know they’re in the woods, but they don’t seem to like coming near the house.  That’s just as well because those that do come close to the house end up dead on the road a day or two later.  They’re better off in the woods.

This little guy or gal looks like he or she has found plenty to eat over the winter months.  Nonetheless, I’m glad he or she found the little offering of food I left out.  He did try to climb up on the feeder, but evidently isn’t experienced at it.  The feeder started to twirl and he went flying off.

I recently made some sales at my RedBubble shop.  RedBubble notifies me of what was sold and how much I will make on it, but they don’t tell me who bought it.  I suppose that’s how it should be.  However.  I would like to thank the person who liked my art enough to purchase something.  In case you’re reading this blog, Lovely Person, thank you so much.  I hope the images bring you joy.

One of the gems about redbubble is the marketplace aspect of the site; where an artist’s contributions can be sold in the form of designs on t-shirts, mugs, phone cases you name it. But the real treat here is the fact that most of these designs are unpublished, meaning you have a plethora of original works at your disposal (ofcourse by disposal I mean a fee).

Artists are given the liberty of setting their own prices on their copyrighted works with redbubble receiving a reasonable commission from each item sale. Ofcourse being  fairly unknown artist you wouldn’t want to set high prices as it may deter people from bothering to browse your catalog.

Within this marketplace is not without its flaws. One of them being the lack of support writers get as opposed to the other artists. Writers are not given the option to sell their pieces and are instead relegated to illustrating their works for leisure (well thats if you can get leisure from being treated as second rate). Also, their pieces are hardly if ever, featured on redbubble’s home page, giving the impression that writers are the scum of the site.

Redbubble have also been criticised for copyright infringement where works offered for sale are those of artists who have no affiliation with the site. Ofcourse this is not any fault of the owners, since it has to do with members and their dishonesty in making a dime off of someone else’s work.

Despite these minor flaws, Redbubble is a unique virtual dome of freshness and originality, that offers potential artists and buyers alike a small marketplace to enjoy the creativity of the world’s undiscovered minds.
