This aspect of a work environment can make or break a company in how efficient the job gets completed. An <strong><a href="http://www.innovationworkshop.com.sg/blog?p=75">office design</a></strong> needs to take into account a few key elements such as size of the space, company goals and employee input. These are all very important aspects in designing a perfect office space.</p>
<p>Office spaces and employees are all different. Drab offices are becoming a thing of the past. Employers are realizing that to be efficient companies need to keep their workers happy. Some offices are too tight, dark and sad. These are the offices that need a redesign and the office manager or owner is the place to start with determining what needs to change.</p>
<p>To begin, an office manager needs to use their observation skills. There are a few questions to ask one self. Are there any problem areas within the office? Are the areas too cramped with office equipment?</p>
<p>Someone trying to determine whether the present office space is suitable should draw a picture of the traffic throughout the office during a workday. See how workers move within the building. A visit to worker areas and conference rooms every half an hour can show what is getting completed in what area and what is not.</p>
<p>Communication with employees is crucial to finding a design that works well. However it can also bring about employee demands that are not realistic. Work with employees to come to a compromise on the most important problems. Just remember that one office interior design will not please everyone. Do the best you can.</p>
<p>Determine office goals for a redesign. Make a list of four to five goals and then brainstorm on a way to meet them. One popular idea with work areas is to move the supervisor to the middle of the main room and put the workers around the edge. This places the workers who spend the majority of their day by the windows and natural lighting. This move alone increases morale and therefore increases the amount of work that gets done.</p>
<p>After determining where the areas of concern are in a workspace, the next question is what should occur? Should a total redesign with construction take place or will just rearranging furniture and equipment suffice? Will the job be too expensive and would it be more realistic to shop around for new office space entirely?</p>

It takes planning, patience and initiative. A team approach and good communication with everyone from every level in the organization is important. <p>Na noite desta terça-feira (24/11) cerca de 500 integrantes do MST armaram acampamento nos arredores da fazenda onde é gravado o reality show da Record &#8220;A Fazenda 2&#8243;.</p>
<p>Pela manhã, os integrantes do movimento se dirigiram até a propriedade da emissora e tentaram ocupar o local. Os manifestantes invadiram a granja vizinha à fazenda e cortaram uma cerca de proteção, houve confronto entre seguranças e manifestantes e só contido após a chegada da polícia, porém ninguém saiu gravemente ferido.</p>
<p>De acordo com Ronivom Palhares, chefe dos seguranças da fazenda, o MST não invadiu e sim praticou vandalismo &#8220;Eles não estavam invadindo e sim destruindo as poucas plantações que estão no arredor da fazenda&#8221; o segurança ainda informou que o bando estava armado com foices e carabinas, além de uma espingarda calibre 12.</p>
<p>Chubley Santos, trabalhador da granja, disse ao Jornal Supimpa que os trabalhadores rurais eram muitos e bastante bravos &#8220;Eles invadiram aqui pela porteira da frente e quebraram tudo, até um dos criadouros. Disseram que iam invadir a Record, que eles queriam aparecer em rede nacional e mostrar a força do MST&#8221; disse Santos.</p>
<p>Já para os manifestantes, a tentativa de invasão foi legítima porque a fazenda é improdutiva &#8220;Nós vemos pela TV que o pessoal lá não faz nada, ficam dançando e não plantam nada. Nós queremos essa fazenda para a nossa família e para produzir o nosso alimento, o nosso sustento&#8221; disse Zé Pepino, líder do bando. &#8220;Nossa luta vai continuar porque o movimento é forte, tem muita gente. Hoje não tivemos sucesso, mas na próxima vez vamos nos preparar mais e vamos mostrar a força do MST pro Brasil todo&#8221; completou.</p>
<p>A Rede Record de televisão inicialmente não confirmou a invasão, mas após a repercussão do caso nos principais portais de notícias, se pronunciou através do diretor Jorge Lucas &#8220;Ninguém saiu machucado porque o confronto foi à distância. Eles invadiram pelo setor norte da fazenda, que é bem afastado do local das gravações, além de ser um brejo. Não se intimidaram e só saíram com a chegada da polícia&#8221;. Segundo o diretor, as gravações continuam normalmente e o acampamento não preocupa.</p>

O esqueleto de um ser não humano foi analisado no Japão e será exposto em Cuiabá.<br />
Ele tem a cabeça desproporcional ao corpo, arcada dentária completa, 6 dedos nos pés, globo ocular diferenciado, e uma altura de 50cm.</p>
<p>&#8220;A rede de televisão japonesa Asahi foi com uma comitiva ao nosso museu em 2005 e fizeram o convite para que participássemos de um documentário para analisar o esqueleto. O interessante é que também fizeram uma reconstituição. Eles realizaram exames que mostraram que ele (o suposto extraterrestre) difere da realidade humana, principalmente porque a densidade óssea é de 2 a 30, enquanto a de um ser humano varia de 500 a 1.500&#8243;, ressaltou Wellington Estevanovic.</p>
<p><span></span>Segundo Estevanovic, nos testes foi observado se haveria a possibilidade de a criatura ter tido hidrocefalia. No entanto, essa hipóteses foi afastada.</p>

Since Facebook&#8217;s redesign, group joining seems to be site&#8217;s primary focus. While others have embraced this, I have held back. I do join groups, yet even if I agree whole heartedly with the group, or can relate to it&#8217;s quirky life observation, I probably won&#8217;t join. Don&#8217;t feel bad. Here are some concise reasons why I probably denied your group invitation.</p>
<p>&#160;</p>
<h3>The Group&#8217;s Title Looks Like It Was Typed With By Someone With A Developmental Disorder. With Their Tongue.</h3>
<p>If your group has a spelling mistake in the title, I won&#8217;t join. If you use stupid words like &#8220;lil&#8221; instead of &#8220;little&#8221;, I won&#8217;t join. If you type in all caps, you can expect a civil, lowercase &#8220;fuck off&#8221; from me. Correct sentence structure is not difficult. Nor is it unimportant.</p>
<p>Also, if you have any more than, oh let&#8217;s say, zero, exclamation marks, at the end of your group title, I won&#8217;t join. They are rarely effective, unless you wanted to convince readers your group was authored by a 13 year old girl having a Robert Patterson induced squealgasm.</p>

<h3>It&#8217;s the shittier one of 100 other groups</h3>
<p>Okay, so you&#8217;ve decided you hate Twilight. Then, you decide the only way you can effectively vent your literary snobbery is by creating a group exclaiming your dislike for one of the this decade&#8217;s most popular book fiction sagas. It sounds like a good idea, until, of course, you realise that this group already exists. So do you join this 300, 000 member strong group? Of course not. Just go ahead and create your own group, with nothing to distinguish it from the established group apart from the lack of a witty description and the fact that you picked a different picture from your Google Image search.</p>

<h3>You have confused &#8220;observational comedy&#8221; with &#8220;hating obvious things&#8221;</h3>
<p>Some of the best Facebook groups highlight the little things we do that we think no one else does, using facebook to remember people&#8217;s birthdays, or giving your tutorial classmates nicknames in your head. The rest, however, come from the group creator thinking that the &#8220;it&#8217;s funny because it&#8217;s true&#8221; maxim means that truth guarantees one helluvah raucous group guffaw. Don&#8217;t you just hate it when you&#8217;re battery is low? Or when you have to stop at a traffic lights? Yes, but these are natural processes. It would be equally funny to rant about having to fill up your glass of water when you want more. Jerry Seinfeld would not have gotten nearly as far if his repertoire consisted of &#8220;And what&#8217;s the deal with hair cuts? You get it cut short, and then it grows back again!&#8221;</p>
<p>This also covers groups like &#8220;I hate terrorists&#8221; or &#8220;I HATE Pedophiles!!&#8221;. So you hate pedophiles and terrorists? That&#8217;s crazy, because I was thinking just the other day about how much I love people who murder innocent people or destroy the innocence of children. Now I think about it, maybe these people aren&#8217;t so holy after all. Thank you infinitely for widening my perspective on the world.</p>

<h3>You think Facebook cares whether you&#8217;ve joined the group</h3>
<p>Guess what. They don&#8217;t. Facebook is not going to reverse months of expensive design work and focus groups because a you convince a couple of your knuckle dragging buddies that they&#8217;re standing up for their rights. Generally, the worse of these groups are based on outright lies. Oh, so Facebook will add a group chat if a million people join? So Facebook contacted you personally did they? Did Mark Zuckerberg appear to you in a dream? &#8220;You are the chosen one, Dan. We at Facebook will honour your wishes. But you must find a million people who agree with you. Do it soooooooooooon&#8221;.</p>

I&#8217;m darn proud of myself for having kept up with this blog now for 15 consecutive months. It&#8217;s been a wonderful release at times when I&#8217;ve needed it the most, and I look forward to the next 15 months forthcoming.</p>
<p>That being said&#8230; do any creative people out there want to help me redesign my blog for 2010? When I branded it with this gosh awful blueish-green theme <a href="http://danielfowler.blogspot.com/2009/04/new-blog-design.html">earlier this year</a>, I did so with the intentions that my website would soon follow suit. Well&#8230; I abandoned the website redesign and never revisited my blog. I&#8217;d love to have something a little more&#8230; masculine? Or at least interesting&#8230; If you or someone you know would like to collaborate with me and work towards this goal, I welcome the graphic insight assistance and would graciously pass along the credit of how awesome everything [will] look.</p>

Rather, it&#8217;s a particular Firefox add-on that provides functionality that has become invaluable to users.  From developer add-ons like Firebug to social add-ons like StumbleUpon, a single add-on can fundamentally change how users interact with the web.</p>

<p>The reason add-ons are so important is because they are a fundamental way that users take control of their online life.  Firefox touts its customizability as one of its main selling points, but users&#8217; ability to customize their browsing experience is dependent on the talent and creativity of the add-on developer community.  I&#8217;ve written in the past about the importance of Firefox providing a user experience ideal for as many people as possible right out of the box, without add-ons installed.  But each user is truly unique and uses the web in increasingly different ways.  That&#8217;s why it&#8217;s so important that add-ons be trivial to find, install, and begin using.</p>
<h3>The Current Add-ons Manager</h3>
<p>Add-ons are currently installed, maintained, and configured via the add-ons manager in Firefox.  This window, found under the Tools menu, provides an inventory of installed add-ons and allows users to  update, install, remove, enable, and disable them.</p>

<p>The add-ons manager has been largely unchanged since 2007, and it badly needs a redesign.  One reason is that it has several usability problems that would provide significant benefit to users if fixed.  For instance, the process of updating add-ons is currently characterized by interrupting important tasks such as startup. Locating a particular installed add-on currently involves navigating through categories such as <em>extensions</em> and <em>plugins</em>.  Even experienced users I talked to find the distinction between these categories hazy.  A redesign to address current issues should insure that installing and updating add-ons is trivial, notifications are non-disruptive, and the interface provides clear information about the state of a user&#8217;s add-ons.</p>
<p>However, a successful redesign of the add-ons manager must not only fix problems, but add functionality.  This is because the scope and functionality of add-ons has increased dramatically and will continue to expand in  future versions of Firefox.  The current add-ons manager gives only the name of an add-on, an icon, a version number, and a one-sentence description.  Users could benefit from more information, such as a description or a screenshot showing what UI the add-on will change.  Added functionality is also needed because of new ways to modify Firefox, such as <a title="Mozilla Labs Jetpack" href="https://jetpack.mozillalabs.com/">Jetpacks</a> and <a title="Mozilla Labs Personas" href="http://www.getpersonas.com/en-US/">Personas</a>.  These are similar to current add-ons in that users can choose items to download for added functionality, but they are installed, managed, and used differently.  A redesigned add-ons manager must be able to incorporate emerging projects like these.</p>
<h3>Redesign Priorities</h3>
<p>From fixing current usability problems to adding needed functionality, there&#8217;s a lot that needs to be tackled in the add-ons manager redesign.  To help focus the effort, the main areas to address can be described as five priorities:</p>
<p style="padding-left:30px;">1. Maintaining and Configuring</p>

<li>Allowing users to quickly locate a particular add-on by name or by type</li>
<li> Providing simple, usable controls for basic add-on operations</li>
<li> Allowing new forms of add-ons, such as Jetpacks and Personas, to be  maintained and configured easily alongside traditional add-ons</li>

<blockquote><p>2. Updating</p></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Updating add-ons automatically by default.  I&#8217;m increasingly  convinced that most users, once they&#8217;ve decided an add-on is trusted, do  not want to manually update it.  They especially do not want to be  reminded to update when they are starting the browser</li>
<li>Allowing users the option to update add-ons manually, update only a particular add-on manually, and possibly to undo an update</li>
</ul>

<blockquote><p>3. Installing</p></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Streamlining the install process to as few steps as possible</li>
<li> Providing the user with clear indications of what  action is needed, especially when some add-ons require a restart and  some do not</li>

<blockquote><p>4. Discovering</p></blockquote>
<blockquote>
<ul>
<li>Providing a compelling first-run experience to new add-ons users,  including clearly showing  what functionality add-ons provide and what  they will change</li>
<li>Providing a usable, findable way on the add-ons manager to search all  existing add-ons, only requiring a visit to AMO when greater community  involvement or information is sought</li>
</ul>
<p>5. Troubleshooting</p>
<ul>
<li>Providing ways to determine if a particular add-on may be causing  performance problems, such as ranking by size, CPU, etc</li>
<li>Giving  clear communication and instructions if there is a security  problem with an add-on</li>
</ul>
</blockquote>
<p>This is still very much a working list open to feedback and changes (especially via comments here or on the <a title="Add-ons Manager Wiki" href="https://wiki.mozilla.org/Extension_Manager:UI_Update">wiki</a>).  Basically, what I&#8217;d like to focus on is making add-on usage less disruptive and more accessible.  Experienced and especially technical users tend to be very aware of add-ons and the functionality they provide.  These users may see add-ons mentioned in the tech press, may talk to their friends about their favorite add-ons, and might even get involved in the add-on developer community.  These are the users who say &#8220;I can&#8217;t imagine a world without add-on X.&#8221;  But the benefit of add-ons is felt almost soley by this group.  There are thousands of add-ons available that can improve the online experience of just about any user.  Both users and developers deserve an add-ons manager that helps make customizing the browsing experience simple.</p>

However, finding the right apartment at the right price may include giving up the 20X15 dream master bedroom, or the five piece bathroom you&#8217;ve always wanted. However, you do not have to give up your personality and lifestyle to make the right fit. </p>
<p>Perhaps, you can view the apartment as a &#8216;blank canvas&#8217;. This is where I think the fun begins. We all know that most apartments come with drab, white walls (or variations of the color white). Well, this is your opportunity to make a statement with decor and design. So, you cannot alter the rooms to your heart&#8217;s content. However, you can stamp your lifestyle in the apartment by bringing your personality into the living spaces.</p>
<p>Perhaps, you are a vintage shopper. Or, shabby chic is more your style. Why not let it reflect in your living spaces. Shop those garage sales and visit those thrift stores. You can find so much quality accessories at bargain prices. You may not have the budget to paint the dining room walls in the dark red you so wanted. But, you can add red accessories and accent the walls with beautiful pictures that just screams your personality. </p>
<p>So go ahead and turn that drab apartment into the fab space you want. In the following blogs, I will give tips and tricks on creating and decorating your apartment space to reflect your personality. <p>The eatery is outfitted with outlets for plugging in laptops, upholstered vinyl chairs instead of Fiberglas seats bolted to the floor, subdued lighting and employees whose all-black uniforms suggest a hip boutique.</p>
<p>Franchise owner Paul Hendel said customers have settled down in a restaurant not known for patrons lingering over lunch.</p>
<p>“We’re becoming a more relevant type of restaurant for the younger crowd,” he said. “They don’t feel rushed. They’re reading the newspaper, relaxed.”</p>
<p>McDonald’s Corp. spokeswoman Danya Proud said that while thousands of the chain’s 14,000 restaurants have been updated over the last few years, the Chelsea location is the first “urban redesign” in the U.S. She said “we’ll continue to evaluate” whether more might follow.</p>
<p>Proud said the redesign was intended “to give our customers more of a reason to make McDonald’s a destination.”</p>
<p>“People are using our restaurants differently today than they did five, 10, 20 years ago,” she said. “People are multi-tasking, doing more on a given day. … You want to be able to open your laptop, log on and get some work done while you’re eating.”</p>

<p>This lovely basement family room had all the components, but not the right furniture arrangement. The sofa blocked the walkway to a storage room and the TV received glare from the sunlight coming in the window. When you entered the room all you saw was the back of a large easy chair.  The homeowner knew this space didn&#8217;t feel right, but was wondering what to do. </p>

<p>Sometimes all you need is another pair of eyes. There was a &#8220;niche&#8221; that the TV fit perfectly in.  That meant the sofa could now slide under the window on the large wall and the chair could be angled toward the TV. When you enter this space, you are cordially greeted by comfortable seating that invites you come on in and have a seat.  You don&#8217;t need to spend a lot of money to make a rooom feel comfortable and welcoming. This room only needs one piece of artwork to go on the wall to the left of the TV niche and it&#8217;s perfect for this family. Time for popcorn and a movie.</p>

<p><strong><a href="http://www.socialstrategytalk.com/">Social Strategy Talk</a> hosted by <a href="http://creativecrowds.com/">Creative Crowds</a> and <a href="http://vint.sogeti.nl/">ViNT</a>. </strong>Tom Steinberg (mySociety) and I were the closing speakers, talking about the issue of public participation and open data in relation to government innovation. There were plenty of smart people there, including practitioners from the government of the Netherlands and key players behind the Dutch <a href="http://www.digitalepioniers.nl//">Digital Pioneers</a> initiative that funds social innovation.</p>
<p><strong>My talk was a very simple introduction to why this topic matters, </strong>plus a consideration of some recent critiques of transparency initiatives, decorated by a lovely data visualisation of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/arenamontanus/375127836/">world population growth</a> from the <a href="http://gecon.yale.edu/">G-Econ project</a>.</p>
<p>It went more or less like this:</p>

<p><strong>We are living with political structures from the last century (or older), </strong>and we must be bold in stepping forward to build smarter government services that leverage the power of ‘we’. Even Obama’s administration is still in the relatively early stages of achieving anything like this. We face problems that governments alone cannot fix – problems that are rooted in network behaviour and whose solutions also lie in network thinking – and we also face issues of fragmentation, identity and belonging in a rapidly, and unevenly globalising world. But also, right here and now, we face the issue of ever increasing expectations of public services, combined with rapidly dwindling funds.</p>
<p><strong>This is the context for the importance of participative processes underpinned by open data.</strong> The social web has taught us that lots of people performing simple actions can result in spectacular collaborative outcomes on the aggregate level; and we have also learned the immense power of feedback as an evolutionary force for improvement. These lessons, when applied to using some of the vast array of data produced and consumed by government, could help us create new, perhaps real-time relationships between government and citizens, rather than 4-5 year electoral feedback cycle we see today. This is partly why we have been working with David Osimo and others on the Open Declaration on European Public Services, calling for greater transparency, participation and empowerment through public service delivery. Please endorse the declaration so that David can present it to the Ministerial Conference in Malmo next month.</p>
<p><strong>We have seen some progress with <a href="http://www.data.gov/">Data.gov</a> and the UK’s <a href="http://www.headshift.com/blog/2009/10/preview-of-uk-governments-open.php">open data project</a>,</strong> and extending this to other important data sets, such as <a href="http://www.number10.gov.uk/Page20555">mapping data in the UK</a>, is vital work that must continue. We have also seen a number of good participation projects that show the potential for involving people in co-design of services, sense making and decision making. We also have the excellent example of <a href="http://www.sicamp.org/">Social Innovation Camp</a> and <a href="http://www.4ip.org.uk/">4IP</a> that show how people can come together to find innovative solutions to social problems, or just make better public services; and, of course, we have the example of mySociety, who have produced some <a href="http://www.mysociety.org/projects/">ground-breaking projects</a> that open up previously invisible data or processes in meaningful ways.</p>
<p><strong>So why are governments not mainstreaming this value more quickly?</strong> Why are these projects so under-funded when (at least in the UK) the government is paying millions to large private sector suppliers every month for major projects that deliver little added value and have such a high failure rate? Perhaps the simplest way to change this situation is to top-slice all IT project budgets and distribute 10% of the funding as innovation funds that can allow smaller players, perhaps even community groups, to try to solve the same problem, with follow-on investment if they come up with workable solutions. In my view, participation and open data projects should be leading the mainstream, not relegated to the periphery.</p>
<p><strong>In thinking about participation and open data projects, </strong>I suggested there are four key areas of focus in our social business design methodology that provide useful starting points to think about related success factors:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>ecosystem:</strong> developer networks to play with open data, distribution networks and critical friends to help shape these projects in the early stages</li>
<li><strong>co-design:</strong> ensuring that the services we build involve users at every stage of their design, which is in itself an empowering outcome for people used to just ‘getting what they are given’</li>
<li><strong>signals and data flows:</strong> how does information and data move around networks, and how do we signal relevance or importance to others</li>
<li><strong>filters:</strong> more data needs better filters to make sense of it</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Finally, I looked at two recent critiques of transparency to consider whether </strong>we should watch out for negative externalities or unintended consequences in pursuing open data and participative methods. First, Larry Lessig published a piece <a href="http://www.tnr.com/print/article/books-and-arts/against-transparency">Against Transparency</a> that looked at the limits of what he called ‘naked transparency’, and he made the point that raw data (especially about individual performance or potential influence / bias) is open to mis-interpretation and mis-understanding, so total transparency should not be our only goal. He also argues, quite rightly, that there is an attention-span issue that means people will not necessarily track an issue with the diligence we might expect:</p>
<blockquote><p>To understand something–an essay, an argument, a proof of innocence– requires a certain amount of attention. But on many issues, the average, or even rational, amount of attention given to understand many of these correlations, and their defamatory implications, is almost always less than the amount of time required. The result is a systemic misunderstanding–at least if the story is reported in a context, or in a manner, that does not neutralize such misunderstanding. The listing and correlating of data hardly qualifies as such a context. Understanding how and why some stories will be understood, or not understood, provides the key to grasping what is wrong with the tyranny of transparency.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>The other critique that I think we should consider, </strong>but which is also very much for the future when we have made far more progress towards opening up government to popular participation, is the issue of legitimacy. <a href="http://potlatch.typepad.com/weblog/2009/10/what-is-the-postbureaucratic-state.html">Will Davies recently wrote</a>:</p>
<blockquote><p>…following Mirowski, we might say that ‘government 2.0′ is the final realisation of the neo-liberal state. No auditors, no experts, no objective knowledge, no sense of the common good, just maximum freedom for individuals to form opinions and privately process information. As David Weinberger says in triumphant Hayekian style, “transparency is the new objectivity.” In some instances, consumer perspectives may form the basis of action – demanding change if they’re a prominent journalist or campaigner, selecting a different service supplier if they’re a fortunate lay-person, or just mouthing off on facebook if they’re not so lucky.</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p>But siding with perspective over expertise cannot be the basis for legitimacy. Allowing people to express their frustration or disappointment, but without offering dialogue or improvement at the end of it, removes the security offered by expertise, but without offering anything in its place. Auditors act as the critics of experts, but they do so from some rival position of expertise; they damage legitimacy, but partly so as to then rebuild it. By contrast, a state laid bare only to the audit of general public dissatisfaction is surely heading towards a legitimacy crisis.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>What this suggests to me is not so much that the new forms of government </strong>we are fumbling our way towards is necessarily less legitimate than a representative democracy run by a bureaucracy, but that we need to find more sophisticated deliberative methods to supplement the simple participation and ‘opinion’ tools that we see today. Not an issue for now, but nonetheless something to think about.</p>

<p>Notice how the gold wall becomes a focal point now, especially since fireplace surround is now white.   Before, the room was too uninteresting.  THIS is a great example of a ReDesign&#8230;using what you already have!</p>

<p>I bet you didn&#8217;t even notice the barstools in the background, and no &#8211;  the counters have not been changed &#8211; only the slipcovers.  Even if you aren&#8217;t into ruffles, slipcovers can make a huge difference.  Just go for something a little more tailored if ruffles aren&#8217;t your favorite design trend. </p>
