It’s interesting. You walk into this world. You have to make a “self.” When I first walked into SL, it was clear to me that I would have to have red hair. I am not sure what decided this for me so distinctly, but there you go—I had to be a redhead.

I have since diverged from this, of course. I have even worn blonde hair, which was a huge step for me personally. (Nothing against blondes. I just never saw myself as having light hair. I can’t explain it.) And I always go for the easy choice in clothes—red. (Which looks good on me in RL too.) So today, I went the easy route and chose red.

I found this dress at a store on a new sim called Period. The creator, Memai Avon, presented a number of great separates—skirts, tops, tights, leggings. Nothing was outre or niche. She offered simple, inexpensive separates that could serve in many circumstances. I purchased this pretty dress with it’s red rose motif. My shopping partner and I agreed that the flat black through the dress was kind of a cheat (black hides a lot of mistakes and problems), but the dress was reasonably priced and looks great worn, and she has a lot of other great pieces that show quite a bit of skill.

At the same mall we found some spectacular hair by Ilze Erin. Offering several styles that frame the face in a most complimentary fashion, her store deserves attention and I hope we see more from her. I dressed up this ensemble with jewelry from DarionMonkee Levitt. It’s really cute stuff made by a person who clearly has incredible patience.

And check out these shoes. Red straps, red nails—*click click* and I have them on these sexy sandals from Maris Kanto. Maris is a scripter extraordinaire (or knows one) because these shoes have a great hud for adjusting skin tone (a notch at a time so you can SEE what it will look like), nails, and hardware and size. Kath in Times Square last New Year's Eve

Holy gingersnaps! I know what I’m doing on New Year’s Eve (or at least which channel I’ll be begging my host to switch to)!! CNN recently announced that Kathy Griffin will once again host CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live with grey fox Anderson Cooper in Times Square.

According to Perez Hilton, Lance Bass will also be joining them from Vegas, making for quite the gay-friendly celebration.  How will Cooper and Griffin keep their hands off each other at midnight? Tune in at 11 p.m. ET (on Dec. 31, duh) to find out if there’s an epic ginger smooch when the clock strikes 12 (God, I hope so)!

If there’s one thing I like more than gingers on reality television, it’s gingers procreating on reality television. Before I delve further into this possibly controversial post, I want to say this: I do not condone teen pregnancy. I think it’s sad that the girls on this show have to deal with raising children on top of juggling school, work, and worthless boyfriends. However, I think this is a good example of a ginger dealing with these problems head-on.

Maci is one of the moms featured on MTV’s Teen Mom, a spin-off of the show 16 and Pregnant. Maci is also a ginger, and her baby, Bentley, is obviously a-freaking-dorable. Teen Mom follows four of the girls from the original show as they struggle after giving birth, and Maci seems to be the only one of them that actually has her shit together. On the most recent episode, Maci left her boyfriend and moved back in with her parents–a smart move considering his apparent lazy attitude with said baby. I tend to mock my fellow gingers, but I seriously have nothing bad to say about Maci (despite the obvious getting pregnant before graduating high school argument). She’s doing the best with the hand she’s been dealt (and let’s be honest folks, gingers are never dealt the good hand). Plus, I’m loving her bob (something else I usually don’t say). Hopefully this baby will become a ginger ASAP.

Join me in watching carefully as Bentley’s hairs turn a bright red ginger color (we can hope). This show also has the following to offer: another mom that spends more time dating models than watching her baby, a couple in desperate need for gastric-bypass surgery (think of that baby’s future!), and a couple who’s respective parents married each other (confusing, and mullets are obviously involved). Teen Mom features new episodes on Tuesdays at 10 p.m. ET (goodie, we only have to wait 2 more days!). You can also watch full episodes online.

Best Christmas card EVER. I’m so disappointed this got pulled by Tesco, the British Supermarket that was originally selling this festive redheaded treat. According to Dlisted, a celebrity blog I recently discovered (you can now access on my blogroll), the card was removed from store shelves after a ginger customer complained.  And to this complaining ginger, I say this: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU!! If we can’t make fun of ourselves, how will we ever cope with the harsh ginger-mocking realities of life?! As a redhead myself, I do not find this card discriminatory. On the contrary, I’m disappointed this niche for holiday greetings is no longer being filled. I’m super upset that I can’t mail this out to all of my relatives and friends (and that I won’t be receiving one)!

Only across the pond would gingers take this matter so seriously–get a grip my fellow redheaded children! If I can find this card available elsewhere, I will let you know (and order in mass quantities).

Yeah.  It’s exactly what you’re thinking…

She will always be my first.  I don’t remember her name.  Patty seems to come to mind for some reason, but maybe it’s because she was Irish with red hair.  Her name is completely unimportant to this story, because for the last 6 years all anyone has ever called her is “The Period One”.

Let me clarify the phrase, “She will always be my first.”  She wasn’t my “first” as in the first person I slept with; she was my first date after O.C.B. (Original Crazy B****, AKA my ex).  Thanks for letting me clear that up.

We met online and as I dialed her number for the first time I was crazy nervous.  My hands were shaking a bit and my voice probably was too.  I can’t remember whether or not I had a couple of drinks to steady myself, but if I didn’t, I probably should have.  Part of me was hoping to get her voice mail so that I could leave a message and let her get back to me on her own time.  I didn’t want her to be in the middle of something and have her be annoyed that I was interrupting.  On a scale of 1-10 I think my self-esteem was hovering somewhere between two and three.

She did answer the phone and somehow I was able to hold it together and I found a way to string along a fairly intelligent conversation.  It must have been intelligent, because before I hung up the phone I had a date.  Not only did I have a date, but I had a date with a pretty girl.  A pretty, thin, redheaded, seemingly normal girl.  I was excited.

There are some details that I don’t remember at all and others that I remember vividly.  Some I remember too vividly.  I remember that she said she had recently moved from Philly and that she was a huge Eagles fan.  I also remember that she lived in Hollywood.  At the time I lived in Long Beach, CA and we were (depending on traffic) anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes apart.  I also remember that the date was on a Monday night.

As we chatted on the phone she mentioned that she really missed watching the Eagles and that when she was in Philly she loved going to a sports bar to watch the games.  As luck would have it the Eagles were playing on Monday Night Football just a few days later, so we decided to meet at a sports bar near Hollywood so that we could watch the game and talk.

My stomach was in knots as I got ready for that first date.  I don’t recall throwing up or anything, but I remember sweating and being scared.  Really scared.  Why was I scared?  I had no game and even less self-esteem.  Not the best combo.

I made my way from freeway to freeway and found a parking spot close to the sports bar and, after parking my car, I got out, wiped my sweaty palms on my pants and made my way inside.  I arrived first and I grabbed a table where both of us could get a good view of the game, just in case the date headed south.

She arrived a few minutes later and she looked just like her pictures.  I wasn’t surprised at this fact, but you have to remember that she was the first person that I had met online and I wasn’t yet hip to the reality that a lot of people don’t look like the pics they post.  Anyway…

She arrived and looked just like her pictures.  I remember she was wearing a tight black shirt—kind of low cut, but not too low.  She was also wearing a plaid schoolgirl-type skirt and black tights.  She looked good.  Really good.

We started chatting, grabbed a couple of drinks and perused the menu a bit.  We ordered a couple of appetizers and some sandwiches and started talking some more.  The nachos arrived and we began eating.  What happened next will forever remain burned in my mind and I can picture the whole event as if it was 15 minutes ago.

I had just put a bite into my mouth when she looked up at me and announced, “I really like sex, but I can’t tonight because I’m on my period.  I hope that’s OK with you.”  Seriously. This chick announced to me just 15 minutes into our first meeting, that she couldn’t have sex because she was menstruating.  Wow!

I tried not to choke on the chip in my mouth and I somehow found the ability to say, “Sure.  No problem.”  I quickly replayed the moment over in my head to make sure that I heard her correctly.  “She didn’t really just say that,” I reasoned.  Then I tried to come up with another phrase that sounded like “I really like sex, but I can’t tonight because I’m on my period.  I hope that’s OK with you.”   But I couldn’t.

To say I was a bit freaked out would be a huge understatement.  I had just come out of a 13-year relationship and I had full custody of my 5-year-old.  I was naive and figured that I would meet someone, fall in love and live happily ever after.  Now here I was sitting across the table from a chick that wanted to nail me on the first date, but couldn’t because she had Aunt Flo in town.

Should I be upset that here I was putting out good money for dinner and drinks and she wasn’t putting out at all or should I be creeped out that this woman I hardly knew thought that I should know right up front about her monthly cycle?

The reality is that someone like her was likely to have some sort of a Super STD—one that could penetrate even the strongest of condoms.  This one was a flat-out slut.  Take that to be a good thing or a bad thing.  Your call.

The bottom line is that I somehow finished dinner and we went our separate ways at halftime.  I never did call her back for a second date, but I’m sure that if I would have, I could have had some much needed sex.  When I got home I called a couple of friends to tell them the story and one was nearly as freaked as I was.  The other one?  He was pissed, not freaked.  To this day I still remember his reaction, “Did you ask her if her mouth worked?”

An ad for a TV dating show has been banned for suggesting that redheads are unattractive, Britain’s advertising watchdog said.

Virgin Media’s newspaper advert for the program “Dating in the Dark” included the text: “How do you spot a ginger in the dark?”

Virgin said the premise of the show was to challenge people’s perception of attractiveness and to encourage decisions based on personality as well as looks.

However the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) agreed with three complainants that the ad was likely to cause serious offence and should not be used again.

“We considered the text was likely to be interpreted … as a statement that reflected a choice between looks and personality … being a suggestion that people with ginger hair were unattractive,” the ASA said in a statement.

“We considered the ad was unlikely to be interpreted to be light-hearted in tone and was instead likely to be seen as prejudicial against people with ginger hair.”

Other adverts in the series used to promote the show had included the tagline: “When the lights come on I just hope I haven’t been kissing Shrek.”

On Tuesday, Britain’s biggest retailer Tesco apologized and said it had withdrawn a Christmas card which showed a child with red hair sitting on the lap of Santa Claus under the banner: “Santa loves all kids. Even ginger ones.”

There are a few people who are of the opinion I am putting way too much stock into my hair colour as a way of defining myself. I see their point, but I honestly don’t believe I am. It was a form of expressing who I was, and to be blunt, life is too short to blend into the crowd. Why should I dull my hair to appease those who are uncomfortable by it? You don’t see me telling a person with their skin covered in tattoos to please get them removed. Or me suggesting to a Goth kid to lighten up on the black. Or a Yuppie to discard their Columbia Sportswear, REI, and Eddie Bauer because it wreaks of conformity.

I love how people express themselves in how they dress and how they present themselves. I give happy hoots to a woman in a vintage gray suit and totally rocking the purple hair. Or a published author donning tailored steampunk fashion with her blue and green tresses. “Be yourself,” I cheer in support, “be brave and be colourful!”

My quest to find a replacement colour so I can be myself has been daunting and disappointing. L’Oreal Feria Power Reds still exists but that ONE colour of mine is gone. None of the other reds will work for my skin tone (perhaps a cherry red, but I don’t want cherry). There is a Shiny Copper but it is too orange and when faded will look like strawberry blonde on me. Ew.

Yesterday I ventured to my local drug store and searched the aisle for the next shade of red. I found L’Oreal Preference “Intense Red Copper”. Oooooo, this has promise. So does Garnier’s “Mango”. This afternoon I opted to try “Intense” and guess what? Not so much with the Intense. As a matter of fact, it doesn’t match with any of the colour swatches on the box. Perhaps for a soccer mom, the intensity is just fine, but for me it feels very, very….*shudder*….ordinary.

No blazing radioactive red hair. No vividness. Just a SAFE red copper.

I feel like my wattage has been dimmed.

But, I will have to live with it until I can either afford a professional hairstylist who will colour my hair the shade I desire or until the drugstore offers one more to my liking. In the meantime, to counter-act the ordinariness of this new colour, I will look into finding a reddish plum to colour the under layer and give it some contrast.
