I have been a little busy with my studies at the moment so have missed out a couple of posts! This is an image of a clam I took a couple of years ago in Tanegashima Island in Japan which I thought was interesting. Although they are very colourful clams can still manage to produce some pretty affective camouflage. The river is clearing up on the Tweed River near where I live so I will be able to post a few recent images soon!

We picked up a Gonipora, Golden Clove and a three Ricordea today from the local fish store. Right now all of the coral in our tank are doing awesome so we couldn’t help but get some more. We are moving in a couple of weeks so for right now we are keeping them on the sand bed. Once we move the tank I will mount them a bit better. However, I like where the Gonipora is at right now and the Golden Clove Polyp is not going to be able to be removed from his rock so I think it’ll stay on the sand bed as well. The Ricordea will be removed from their plugs and glued to the live rock. After acclimation the Gonipora and Clove opened up nearly immediately until our Emerald crab decided that the only way he could see the new stuff was to climb all over it. That guy is a troublemaker.

I picked up three new coral this weekend. A Meteor Shower, Duncan and Fuzzy Leather. My LFS’s owner had a waiting list for the frags from a beautiful 15+ head Duncan so I got on the list and ended up getting a 5-headed frag for $12/head. He hand picked it on a trip to Los Angeles and it is the only one of this strain in North Dakota. If it does well he stated that he would be more than willing to buy the frags. From what I have researched they really, really do well with target feeding. If I can keep the Scarlet Cleaner Shrimp busy I will get a video of the target feeding. That shrimp is a maniac. Cannot keep him away from any food. I couldn’t get a very good picture of the Meteor Shower. This guy needs a new camera. At least you can see the coraline really taking off in these pics. I love the reds and purples we are getting.

My frogspawn is splitting into two heads. I am pretty happy with that. You will see in the picture below that it looks a sort of sickly yellow. That is not the case. My LED lighting is non adjustable and it produces a yellow tint on greens the higher up they are in the tank. I think I need many more blues. Right now I have a 50/50 distribution of White and Blue 3W Crees. I think I am going to invest in a fully adjustable pendulum when we move into our new house (hopefully in June).

Well, last week I wrote about bringing home a bunch of new coral and a bicolor blenny. Since then, every fish died within about 2 days.

The Royal Gramma went into hiding right after the introduction of the blenny. I assumed it was because he was a little skittish and not used to the new fish. Well, we didn’t see him again and I am pretty sure the shrimp ate his corpse over night because he is nowhere to be found. After that the blenny started acting strange. Instead of hiding in a hole in the rock and peeking out to watch us, he curled up in the corner of the tank. We figured something bad was about to happen. He was dead the next morning. That evening we came home from dinner and a dead clown was half eaten by the cleaner shrimp.

We finally we would see what was happening. The last fish left, our other clown, had marine ick spots all over him. We did not see the ick present on any of the other, now dead, fish. We pulled him out and put him in quarantine and dosed with medicine. He was dead by morning.

The coral and inverts are still doing great thankfully. We now are going leave the tank fish free for a minimum of two months which actually works out perfectly (not that I am happy with dead fish) because we are buying a new house and moving the tank should be a touch easier without fish.

Conch came out to say cheese. The hermit has decided it is too lazy to walk and saddled up. The algae on the back glass in the pic is inevitable. I don’t think I will ever have enough clean up crew to handle that. For my next tank I think I will have my aquascaping completely hide the back glass so I can avoid that eyesore altogether.

Went to the local fish store to see his new coral he picked up in California on a big buying trip he went on. I am super impressed with his new selection. It was hard to stop saying “I’ll take that and that and that and that”. I managed to get out of there only spending $108 on coral.

I am loving the color on my small frag of King Midas Zoanthids.

Small Frag of King Midas Zoanthids

Also got a green torch. I need them to do awesome so that I can get the $115 colony of Ultra Golden Torch. I need to figure out what is up with our lighting that makes the greens look yellow.

We just got a hang on back protein skimmer to replace our stock filtration. It is not installed yet because I need to move the tank another 2 inches away from the wall which is going to take some work.

Enjoy the pic of my sock in there too. I HATE SOCKS.

We picked a Conch to clean up the sand bed and a Bicolor Blenny, but they are being shy at the moment and wont let me get a picture.

The Romans and Greeks believed that seahorses had attributes of the god Poseidon (Neptune) such as strength and power while Europeans believed that they carried the souls of dead sailors, giving them safe passage until they reached their destination. You would be hard pressed to find anything bad written about these creatures and when I see them I tend to agree.

Well, we have got a couple sets of Zoanthids and a Royal Gramma. The Royal Gramma refuses to let me

Well, we have got a couple sets of Zoanthids and a Royal Gramma. The Royal Gramma refuses to let me get a picture of her side. It Royal is pretty shy because the Damsel decided to whoop the crap out of it for a couple days.

We separated the Damsel from the rest of the tank with an in-tank net box. Everyone who told me catching a damsel is hard was not lying. I spent hours trying to coax it out of hiding. Finally I put 2-days worth of brine shrimp in the net and it swam right in.

The next morning we noticed it had a large white bubble forming around its eye. We immediately went to the store and picked up a 10g tank to use as a quarantine tank. We put the Damsel in there and dosed with some medication. Within 3 days it was all cleared up.

I am not sure what to do with the damsel or the quarantine tank now. I don’t particularly want to leave the quarantine tank setup because it is in our living room right by the display tank. I was thinking of two options. Giving the damsel back to the local fish store is option 1 and my preferred option. Then I would take the quarantine tank down and rebuild it somewhere more convenient. I have a really large counter in the guest bathroom and thought it could go in there. It wouldn’t look so bad if it had a couple pieces of live rock and some sand. Option 2 is making it into a second display tank in my living room. I think that is the route my fiance wants to go. She wants to put some sand in there, a Diamond Goby and a shrimp. She will likely win.

Obligatory pics:

I have always been interested in the reflections on the ocean surface. In shallow water you can get a mirror image of the bottom on very flat days or you can also get a shimmering effect if the water is moving. The sky’s the limit when it comes to what variety of patterns and colours you can see, that is for sure.

Although I do not use my flash much, because of the depth which results in lower light, it lit up this Orange Flower Tree Coral pretty well. I took this freediving so I really deserved a good shot after swimming down to 25 metres, lining up a good angle and getting back to the surface on one breath. This coral is also known as Strawberry Coral, or Pink or Orange Cauliflower Coral.

If I had more time I would love to write down all of the species of sea life in this square meter of space. I was talking with Pete my neighbour the other morning and he was commenting on how much sea life there was at a reef he fishes at and it made me think of how much life exists in our vast expanses of water on this planet. And this is what we can see, so imagine the concentration of life in the oceans compared to that of the land. Pretty staggering.

I have been in Denver, CO for work since Thursday. I finished everything up early so I got to take Sunday off. I decided to take the two mile walk to the Downtown Aquarium. It was great. They had a massive shark tank and the largest puffer I have ever seen. He was massive. Below is a picture of it with my hand in the picture for a size reference.

There was a massive frogspawn colony. I can only hope that someday my frogspawn colony will be 1/4 as large.

I wish I had more free time here because they offer snorkeling in one of their large tanks. Man, that would be fun.

While I was away my Fiance picked up a few new things for the tank. I think she got some Zoanthids. I will post some pics when I get back from my trip. I hope to get a video of my target feeding my frogspawn up this week too.

The sand is getting a little dirty so I picked up 10 new nassarius snails today. I planned on getting the snails and that is it when I went to the store. I ended up getting 2 new corals and another powerhead. The right side of my tank didn’t have enough water flow on the surface to create a shimmer so got a small 180gph powerhead to point it toward the surface and get the shimmer on that 1/2.

Man, I had a scare last night. Thought my calcium level was at 200ppm. Retested and it turns out it is at 400ppm. Phew. Just a note, it really helps if you read the instructions all the way to the end. I did a 10% water change today and the salinity raised just enough to put it right back where it needs to be. We are currently deciding on what we want our next fish to be. I am wanting a sand sifting Goby to help clean up the detritus. I think Diamond Gobys are great. My fiance is looking at Firefish, Royal Gramma and with some prodding from me, a Diamond Goby. All of the tank parameters are looking great. I need to get the Frogspawn on a feeding regimen. I want him to grow as quickly as possible.

We picked up a new Frogspawn coral and 2x small Clowns. The Frogspawn is flourishing. It has extended much further than it was at the local fish store. The clowns seem to be having a great time and are doing great. I was very pleased that the Yellowtail Damsel welcomed them with open arms, err fins. I was thinking the Damsel would be a little territorial, but all 3 seem to be together more often than not. Monday or Tuesday I will be getting a master test kit so I can start testing for calcium, carbonate hardness, phosphate levels to keep my coral happy. Depending on the levels, I will likely be doing a 10% water change on Tuesday or Wednesday as well. I think it may be getting to be time to get a higher end camera. I really like taking pics of the tank and the 5MP camera on my Galaxy Nexus just isn’t cutting it.

New LEDs are installed and got a Kenya Tree coral to go along with them. I just love the shimmer of the LEDs. I am not sure how I want to mount the coral yet. I think it should be okay in the sand where I initially put it, but I think moving it to a rock my prove to be a better idea. It is leaning toward the left a little bit due to it opening up and catching the current. I will be monitoring it and will move if the current gets to be too much.

I cannot wait to get some soft corals going! I should have the LEDs installed on Monday. I also picked up a new liquid test kit to get better accuracy on my testing versus what I was using, test strips.

It was a Friday and got off work a little early. I was driving down south to check out Ocean’s Paradise, my local reef keeping store. I was thinking of getting my fiance, Joni and saltwater tank for her birthday. I passed by Joni’s work and decided I would surprise her and pick her up and take her there. She had never been there before and I thought she would love it. My boss, who has a 75g marine aquarium of his own just so happened to be there (I must have influenced him to be there after asking him a bunch of questions about his aquarium that afternoon). Joni and I talked with my boss and the store owner for over an hour and I was really fascinated with everything.

With no intention of buying a tank when I walked in, I left after having purchased a 29g tank, stand and everything I needed for the initial setup. Joni and I were pretty pumped.

Josh, the owner of our local fish store delivered everything the following morning along with pre-mixed saltwater. Josh even set it up for us and explained everything he was doing so we could learn. With no fish in it, it was still beautiful.

We had only got about 12lbs of live rock as you can see in the image above, but we had a vision of what we wanted the rockscaping to look like so we went back a couple hours later and picked up 20 more lbs.

Above is what we initially did with the new live rock. I read quite a few horror stories about rockscaping disasters causing the tank to shatter so I rearranged everything to make an avalanche less likely.

You will see in the image above the rockscaping that we finally decided on along with our 1st resident, a Yellowtail Blue Damsyl.

We are very much looking forward to documenting everything we do and watching out tank grow. Next up is going to be for us to make a decision on lighting.
