Early on today as I was working the Reference Desk one of our regulars arrived and immediately handed me a note that read:

Sorry I don’t mean to be rude but I took a vow of silence for 40 days

OVER [i flip the note]

Can I please have the local newspaper Woeful Thanks

I read the note, said “sure,” and handed the guy today’s paper. He smiled and walked away.

This particular guy a homeless veteran, but he isn’t an Irregular. He chooses to be homeless even though he has steady part-time work, and he is consistently polite and respectful of the Library staff and our materials. Although he most certainly leads an unconventional life he is always a decent guy.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

Redone vampire law for the eternity universe. Some added, some taken out, some kept the same.

A vampire only needs to survive on human blood. Human food satiates them, and they enjoy it and find it filling, but vampires must have blood.

If a vampire goes a year and a day without drinking human blood, they will die.

A vampire cannot feed from the blood of another vampire. (Basically this results only in said bitten vampire being very annoyed.)

A vampire can only be killed directly (ie. swords, physical contact, etc).

A vampire cannot be killed by a human. However, a human can harm them, although usually not very severely.

Vampires are indistinguishable from other humans, except for their fangs.

A human cannot distinguish a vampire from a human unless the vampire is really obvious about his affairs, but a vampire can sense another vampire for what he is.

When a vampire is changed, their eyes change color–not one set color, but a seemingly random one.

Vampires cannot die from illness, although they go through the same process of the body fighting off illness and recovery.

A vampire is changed when all the blood is drained from their body, but given new blood (the blood of the vampire changing them) in the split second before they die.

Vampires are sterile.

While many people look forward to the holiday catalogs that have already been stuffing mailboxes, or

While many people look forward to the holiday catalogs that have already been stuffing mailboxes, or the seed catalogs that start arriving shortly after the new year, I look forward to the book catalogs that come every few months.

The latest from the University of Nebraska Press contains the regular inclusion of baseball titles that should be sure to follow the publisher’s suit of strong, well-researched products.

They include:

Joe Cronin: A Life in Baseball, by Mark Armour. Cronin was one of those baseball lifers, beginning his career as a player before becoming a team executive and finally president of the American League. I may be wrong, but I can’t immediately recall another major bio on him in recent years, although Robert Gorman published a book in 2007 through Baldwin Books, which, if I’m not mistaken, is a self-publishing outfit. Cronin, a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, spanned several generations of ballplayers, so I’m quite interested in seeing how he’s portrayed. (Due in April.)

1921: The Yankees, the Giants, and the Battle for Baseball Supremacy in New York, by Lyle Spatz and Steve Steinberg. Yet another in a seemingly endless universe of New York-centric baseball books. I’m always fascinated with the huge popularity of baseball during the years before other entertainments — TV, talking movies, football — began pulling fans away. (April, although this one might be better suited for an October release, a la The First Fall Classic, The Machine, and Game Six, which all did well around World Series time this year.)

Final Innings: A Documentary History of Baseball, 1972-2008, Dean Sullivan. If you haven’t read the first three in this series, do so. Sullivan goes through the arduous process of picking through all the highlights of the eras to find the most interesting, not just in terms of the sports stories, but in pop culture and even American history. The editor includes not just portraits of players and events, but documents (and there are thousands of them floating along behind the scenes) that are just as important as box scores. Not quite a scrapbook, not quite a straight narrative, but always entertaining. (June)

UNP is also publishing what basically amounts to two reprints: On a Clear Day They Could see Seventh Place: Baseball’s Worst Teams, by George Robinson and Charles Salzbeger, and The Imperfect Diamond: A History of Baseball’s Labor Wars, by Lee Lowenfish. Both feature new introductions, and the latter a new epilogue. Imperfect should include more, in my opinion, since it was first published more than 25 years ago. There’s so much more to consider that such a book deserves more than a quick overview in a postscript.

That's what we're here for

Patron: “I am looking for a globe of the earth.”
Librarian: “We have a table-top model over here.”
Patron: “No, that’s not good enough. Don’t you have a life-size?”
Librarian: (pause) “Yes, but it’s in use right now.”

The purpose of the reference interview is for the librarian to determine what the patron needs. When a patron walks up to the desk and asks for help, sometimes they are not clear on what they are looking for. They ask for X when what they really need is Y. It could be that they are being vague because of the nature of the subject or they themselves don’t understand the assignment their teacher assigned them. A good librarian should ask several questions so that they know what exactly the patron is looking for. The librarian is not trying to be nosy but rather be clear on what the patron really needs.

Some patrons are uncomfortable walking up the desk and asking for help. They may feel that the librarian is asking too many questions and feel uncomfortable at the intrusion. By asking questions, the librarian is simply trying ferret out what the patron needs and not be intrusive.

For example I had a patron ask where the medical books were located. We have lots of books on the subject so I asked if there was something specific they were looking for. The patron looked a little uncomfortable so I said that I just wanted to make sure that we had what they were looking for so that I could send them to the correct location. Then the patron says that they need more information on STDs. At this point I don’t need to ask further questions because I can give him a general area where he can look for books on the subject. But by this point the patron feels more are ease and tells me exactly why they need a book on gonorrhea. Well I didn’t really need to hear the whole life story but it did help me narrow down the search and get an exact call number for them. Sometimes it’s hard telling them to stop, that they are sharing way too much information.

I remember another instance where a student came in and said he needed a book. Ok so far so good, we have lots of those. After more prodding he said it was a book for his English class and the author was dead. Well now, that does help but still I needed more information. So after about twenty minutes of Q&A turns out he needed The Scarlet Letter by Nathanial Hawthorne. And since he waited to the last minute we didn’t have any copies available for check out.

The reference desk can be very intimidating for patrons, either because they are embarrassed about the subject or confused on what they need. So what they first ask for is not what they really need. It is the job of the librarian to clarify what is needed so that the patron can have a successful experience. Some interviews may take longer than others or the librarian may not need to ask anything because some patrons don’t have a shy bone in their body and tell you their whole life story without any prompting. Either way, the reference interview helps

On the next installment I am going to rant…I mean talk about holiday decorations and the library. Is it needed? Do patrons care whether we decorate the library?

In honor of last Wednesday’s international GIS Day, one of my friends in the map/GIS community came up with these great maps of where our Thanksgiving food comes from, using GIS and USDA data sets. She’s made comparison maps for three different years to see how production patterns have changed over time. 2007 Dinner Poster.

I’m not surprised that Oregon is a big green bean state, but who knew Wisconsin grew more? Hmmmm…green beans. Is it Thursday yet? Take a look and have fun with maps!
