Der Referent fraß Zeichen, wie sein Bild und umgekehrt geschah es auch gleich wieder. In meinem Kopf war alles wirr und bunte Bilder flogen wild durch einen konstruierten Raum, der seine Gestalt ständig verlor. Es ging sehr schnell und langsam vor sich. Grenzen schwammen, bebten und flossen auf Eindrücken und losen Landschaften daher. Mein Blickpunkt sprengte sich selbst und ich wurde eins, dass alles aufging.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>With everything that is happening in today&#8217;s world, many of us need to take a step back and look at life from a different perspective. In essence we need to &#8216;change&#8217; our way of thinking. Hence I would like to share 10 insights to bring about a magical change in your life.</p>
<p>1.You are in control of your destiny. Only you can make your dreams come true. If you have not achieved your dreams up until today, and are still following the same routine you have been doing for the last few years, guess what – nothing will change. You have to change, do things differently, re-invent yourself, take responsibility and do things in a new way. Become acutely aware of everything around you and take responsibility for your own actions.</p>
<p>2.It is imperative that you set time aside every day to meditate on your dreams, desires and goals. By meditate, I mean quiet time where you reflect on your own life. It does not have to be an hour per day. It can even be ten minutes only. But you do need to give yourself time to &#8216;re-energise&#8217; and find your focus again.</p>
<p>3.Practice the Law of Giving. And by &#8216;giving&#8217; I don&#8217;t necessarily mean materialistic things. Meeting someone and quietly sending this person a blessing of love and health – but doing it consciously. Smiling at someone you never speak to at work. Offering comfort to somebody that seems down. And most of all – doing this from an &#8216;unconditional love&#8217; point of view. In other words, do it without expecting anything in return.</p>
<p>4.Do not be disappointed by setbacks. Remember, the most successful people on earth have failed more than anybody else. The only difference is that they never saw the failure as bad or negative. They saw it as a learned lesson and stepping stone. It is through determination and never giving up, that we achieve our dreams.</p>
<p>5.Don&#8217;t listen to people that put you down.  If you believe in yourself, follow your heart and follow through. Do not hang out with negative people who try and break you down. Stick with the positive one who support you.</p>
<p>6.Respect is earned – remember that. Often you have to earn it by being hard. Never take the easy way out just to win a popularity contest. I much rather be respected than popular. No matter what you do in life, not everyone is going to like you. But, by doing what is right, rather than what is easy, even if someone doesn&#8217;t like you – they WILL respect you.</p>
<p>7.Get out of the rat race and stop being conditioned by what society and the media expect from you. Even if you manage to win the rat race, remember, you are still a rat! You will only find inner happiness and peace if you are honest within yourself and life the life you are meant to live. The only way you will find that answer is through blocking out all the &#8216;outside&#8217; influences and spending quite time alone looking within yourself. Think about it, the media will always try control your thinking and make you want to buy the latest craze. Why, because they are controlled by the governments who want you to buy everything and have debt. Because, if you have debt you have to work and pay taxes. The government needs your taxes to function. If you had no debt, and were content with the simple things in life and not run after money all day long – you would be free.</p>
<p>8.Find your passion again. Do you wake up excited and happy about the new day? Or do you wake up moaning? Think about it, what makes us loose our zest for life ? Easy &#8230; expectation! We do something because we expect something in return. When things don&#8217;t go our way, we are completely disappointed and depressed. Practice unconditional love and do whatever you do because you really want to do it. It must be fun and make you feel good, without you wanting anything in return. Guest what, the laws of the universe are such that it will come back to you. However, because you had no expectations, it will just be so much greater when it does come back. Life is like a mirror – what you put in front of that mirror, is what reflects back on you. It&#8217;s as easy as that.</p>
<p>9.The most precious asset you have is your own body – so look after it. Eat right, exercise and stay fit. Once your health is gone, that&#8217;s it. Take care of your body.</p>
<p>10.Life is like a roll of toilet paper – the closer you get to the end, the quicker it goes! So enjoy every moment of it. learn to live in the now. If you are depressed and negative, it is because you are living in the past. If you are stressed and anxious, it&#8217;s because you are living in the future. Think about this : NOTHING has ever happened in the past or the future. Anything that will happen in your life will happen NOW. You cannot do anything about, or change the past -it has happened, it is over. Yes your actions today can have an impact on your future. But right now you are living in the now. You do not know how long this &#8216;now&#8217; will last. So why not make the most of it. By constantly living in the now, to the fullest, every yesterday WILL become a good memory and the future WILL be something you look forward to.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Wieder so ein Tag &#8211; man steht auf und das erste was man macht: Stellen suchen. Wir haben nun also fast Mitte Juli und nischte passiert mehr auf dem Stellenmarkt. Seit dem 25. Mai gibt es eigentlich keine neuen Stellenangebote mehr, die für mich in Frage kommen.</p>
<p>Davon sowieso einmal abgesehen, dass ich mich bei einem Teil sowieso nicht bewerben kann, weil ich deren Traumanforderungen von ähm Studium mit 1,0 Abschluss, vierundzwanzig Auslandpraktika, Führerschein und fünfhundert Jahren Berufserfahrung nicht erfülle. Jetzt also die große Runde Stillstand. Jobbörse für Jobbörse ist jetzt abgegrast. Es ist halb elf, drei Stunden erfolglose Suche. Nix dabei. Nur wieder so ein paar Sachen, bei denen ich mich sowieso schon beworben habe. Die wollten mich aber nicht. Da passte meine Qualifikation nicht. Aber das hat natürlich nichts mit der Bewertung meiner Person zu tun. Wirklich nicht.</p>
<p>Ach, es ist ein Kreuz. Manche Stellenbörsen lassen ja ahnen, wie oft dort eine Bewerbung eingegangen ist &#8211; sieht man anhand eines Counters das bereits über 400 Leute die Anzeige geklickt haben, kann man von mal mindestens 200 Bewerbungen ausgehen. Eine Agentur habe ich ganz besonders im Auge. Die suchen komischerweise alle acht Wochen mit dem gleichen Profil. Anscheinend sind alle Leute die sich dort bewerben der guten Dame die die Auswahl trifft, nicht gut genug. Ist nur seltsam &#8211; als Unternehmen würde ich mir doch mal Gedanken machen, wenn ich alle zwei Monate die gleiche Stelle ausschreibe und niemanden finde.</p>
<p>Der Kampf um Arbeit war in Deutschland sowieso schon immer ein Kampf mit vielen Papieren. Papier ist gedulig. Wer hat die meisten Zeugnisse und die meisten Praktika. Das ist doch lächerlich. Ich habe in meinem Leben inzwischen insgesamt fünf Praktika von sechs Monaten gemacht &#8211; geholfen hat es mir nicht. Am Ende wurde sogar ein Strick draus. Egal wie man es macht, es scheint immer verkehrt zu sein.</p>
<p>Nun also große Nullrunde im Sachen Stellen. Was soll man da tun? Was sagt man dem lieben Arbeitsamt? Wie soll man seine Quote zur sogenannten &#8220;Eingliederung auf dem ersten Arbeitsmarkt&#8221; halten? Keine Ahnung.</p>
<p>Aber es geht sowieso nicht mit rechten Dingen zu. Eine Bekannte macht in Personalvermittlung und die sagt, momentan ist die Hölle los. Die deutschen Chefs wollen Menschen mit Lust zur Selbstaufgabe. Am besten sechzig Stunden arbeiten, Familie kann da ja schon ein Hindernis sein. Ledige Menschen ohne Freunde, die nur noch arbeiten wollen, natürlich für so wenig Geld wie möglich. Dabei am besten mit Abitur, einer Ausbildung, einem Studium obendrauf. Nicht zu vergessen: Berufserfahrung und zu allem bereit.</p>
<p>Neulich sagte sie mir, Frauen würden sowieso nur nach Leuten schauen, die Ihnen nicht gefährlich werden. Männer wollen was zum anschauen, im ersten Durchlauf ist die Qualifikation egal. Darum haben die nun einen Tussi Ordner. Wenn einer was in der Art fodert, nehmen sie und ihre Kollegen den Tussi Ordner in die Hand.  Manch ein Arbeitgeber fordere das ganz offen.  Mit den Worten &#8220;Ich habe zu Hause schon genug Altersheim&#8221; habe manch Chef in den Fünfzigern schon die Blondine mit Knackarsch bestellt.  Kein Märchen.</p>
<p>Hört man solche Geschichten, fragt man sich, wo soll das alles hinführen?</p>
<p>Deutschland, du bist ein Opfer deiner selbst.</p>

<p>In die gleiche Kerbe kann ich auch schlagen. Ich stehe auf und mache mich an die Arbeit (höhöhöhö). Suchmaschinen anschmeissen. Ich gebe mal, ganz unverblümt und hoffnungsvoll, <em>Volontariat</em> in die Suchleiste ein. Ausgespuckt werden die merkwürdigsten Sachen. PR-Manager. Journalist mit Berufserfahrung. Fachreferent für Architektur. Und so weiter und so fort. Manche Suchmaschinen haben dann als ersten Eintrag die schönen &#8220;gesponserten jobs&#8221;.  Was ist denn das?</p>
<p>Ich suche mich  jedenfalls so durch sieben Suchmaschinen und Portale. Mein allmorgendliches Ritual. Mittlerweile bin ich reif für Wetten, dass&#8230; Ich kann, nach Alphabet geordnet, wie die menschlichen gelben Seiten, Namen und Standort deutscher PR-Agenturen runterrasseln. Und die leidige Suche seit Monaten führt dazu, dass ich auch einige Angebote schon auswendig mitsprechen kann, weil die üblichen Verdächtigen alle 4 Wochen ihre ewig bestehenden Ausschreibung posten. Ich sollte die als Liste zusammenfassen und an eine Kirchenmauer schlagen!</p>
<p>Meine Güte ist der Markt tot. Toter als tot. Was soll man machen? Initiativbewerbungen sind ja auch immer so eine Sache. Viele wollen die nicht haben, dann landen die Mülleimer. Die Anruferei vorher macht&#8217;s auch nicht besser. Wenn man Glück hat, bekommt man ein &#8220;Schicken Sie uns das mal zu&#8221; als Anwort. Und dann hört man ewig nix.</p>
<p>Ich träume mir mein Erfolgszenario zurecht. Stellenangebot gesehen. Passt wie der sprichwörtliche Arsch auf den Eimer. Ich schreibe eine schöne Bewerbung. Zwei Tage später: ein Anruf. Eine Einladung zum Gespräch. Ein interessantes Gespräch. Beim Abschied direkt die Zusage. So einfach kann es sein.</p>
<p>Man wird ja noch träumen dürfen</p>

<p><em>Notez au passage que quand je dis &#8221;Vous allez </em><span style="color:#008080;"><em>en </em></span><em>recevoir?&#8221;, j&#8217;ai préalablement pris la peine d&#8217;exprimer un référent : </em><span style="color:#008080;"><em>le coca light lemon vert</em></span><em> (je bois ce que je veux, je me rie de vos sarcasmes). Eh bien, c&#8217;est ça, une anaphore : la reprise d&#8217;un élément antérieur. Sans l&#8217;anaphore, on serait obligé de toujours tout répéter <strong>et ce serait insupportable</strong> : &#8220;Vous n&#8217;avez plus de <span style="color:#008080;">coca light lemon vert</span> ? C&#8217;est impossible à savoir. <strong>Il manque le référent. <span style="font-weight:normal;">L&#8217;absence de référent caractérise généralement le discours des jeunes enfants. Ils ont toujours l&#8217;impression qu&#8217;on sait <strong>de quoi </strong>ou <strong>de qui </strong>ils parlent, comme si on était dans leur tête (&#8220;Maman elle m&#8217;a dit de pas le faire, mais je l&#8217;ai fait quand même et Camille elle en a mangé elle aussi et c&#8217;était pas bon&#8221;). C&#8217;est pour ça que je parle pas aux enfants. Ca demande un trop gros effort de re contextualisation.</span></strong></p>

<p><strong>La voix d&#8217;homme</strong> : L&#8217;électricien. </p>
<p><strong>Moi</strong> : Ah, non, désolée. Je ne suis pas chez moi. Ce soir&#8230; ou ce week-end, si vous êtes disponible&#8230;</p>
<p><strong>L&#8217;électricien</strong> : Bon, alors c&#8217;est avec <span style="color:#339966;">Patricia</span> qu&#8217;il faut voir ça. Merci. Au revoir.</p>

<p>Je pourrais me contenter d&#8217;un &#8220;putain de bordel de bite, c&#8217;est qui Patricia ?&#8221;, mais c&#8217;est férié = je travaille pas, j&#8217;ai toute la journée pour dormir, regarder la télé, traîner sur youtube, voir des vrais gens, et c&#8217;est là que se révèle mon tempérament masochiste : je vais plutôt me lancer dans un cours de grammaire. </p>

<p>- Si je dis :</p>

<li>phrase n°1 : &#8220;Quelle <span style="color:#ff00ff;">belle robe</span> !&#8221; </li>
<li>phrase n°2 : &#8220;Tu <span style="color:#ff00ff;">l&#8217;</span>as achetée où ?&#8221;</li>

<p>=&#62; Le &#8220;<span style="color:#ff00ff;">l&#8217;</span>&#8221; dans la seconde phrase est une anaphore pronominale.</p>
<p>- Si je supprime la phrase n°1 et que je me contente de la phrase n°2 (&#8220;Tu <span style="color:#ff00ff;">l&#8217;</span>as achetée où ?&#8221;), c&#8217;est parce que la situation d&#8217;énonciation est telle que je peux désigner la robe du doigt (par exemple, je croise une amie dans la rue). </p>
<p>Quand le contexte permet d&#8217;identifier le référent, on parle d&#8217;une référence <strong>déictique.</strong></p>
<p><strong></strong></p>
<p>- S<strong><span style="font-weight:normal;">i la situation d&#8217;énonciation est telle que mon interlocuteur ignore à quoi je fais référence (par exemple, nous sommes au téléphone), </span>je ne peux pas employer de déictique. </strong></p>
<p>- Il est de nombreuses situations, dans lesquelles l&#8217;usage d&#8217;un déictique est IMPOSSIBLE, je vous remercie d&#8217;en prendre note :</p>
<ul>
<li>à l&#8217;âge adulte, on dit &#8220;mon père&#8221;/&#8221;ma mère&#8221; lorsqu&#8217;on évoque ses parents dans une conversation (<strong>si</strong> <strong>et uniquement si </strong>votre interlocuteur est votre frère ou votre soeur, vous pouvez employer &#8220;papa&#8221;/&#8221;maman&#8221;)</li>
<li>on ne laisse pas de message sur le répondeur d&#8217;une vague connaissance, en disant : &#8220;C&#8217;est moi. Rappelle-moi.&#8221;</li>
<li>on ne peut pas dire à un aveugle : &#8220;C&#8217;est quoi, ça ?&#8221;, etc.</li>
</ul>

<p>Quelqu&#8217;un, pour te féliciter d&#8217;avoir attentivement suivi ce cours, je vais te faire un cadeau. Sa valeur est inestimable. J&#8217;ai longtemps hésité, car partager ce genre de choses risque de créer entre nous un lien gênant. Digital photography has certainly challenged this notion, but even before the advent of digital cameras, questions were raised about the veracity of photography. Decisions in framing and printing by the photographer alter reality, and what one chooses to photograph necessarily implies that something was not photographed. Even further than this is the idea that a photograph of a scene or thing or person can in no way truly represent the true nature of that thing. A philosopher of language theory, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derrida" target="_blank">Jacques Derrida</a>, wrote at length about the inability of language to fully communicate thought, as it is hopelessly limited and fallible due in part to the limitations of words and the perception of those words. Photography can be seen in working very much the same way &#8211; they are references to reality (the referent) but they never truly connect with that reality due to the limitation of a  two dimensional image and our individual perception of that image.</p>

<p>The famous essay, &#8220;On Denoting&#8221;, written by Bertrand Russell has been very influential in many ways in philosophy of language.  Russell himself is known for the vastness of his philosophical work:  on philosophy of language, history of philosophy, epistemology, religion, and so forth. He is also known for the famous &#8220;Russell Paradox&#8221;.  &#8220;On Denoting&#8221; was not the first time Russell responded to Gottlob Frege.</p>
<p>As it is well known, Frege spent most of his philosophical life trying to prove that arithmetic could be derived from formal logic.  This is a philosophical doctrine called <span style="font-style:italic;">logicism</span>, and which failed in the long run.  In his first work <span style="font-style:italic;">Concept-Script</span> (<span style="font-style:italic;">Begriffsschrift</span>) he laid down the general formalization of logic, symbolically representing objects, functions, quantifiers and so forth.  Persuaded by Carl Stumpf and others, he wrote a philosophical masterpiece called <span style="font-style:italic;">The Foundations of Arithmetic</span> (<span style="font-style:italic;">Die Grundlagen der Arithmetik</span>) which refuted the psychologistic, naturalist and empiricist accounts of mathematics.  Later, Frege wrote a series of essays where he formalized his semantic doctrine which he would later use for his logicist enterprise:  &#8220;On Function and Concept&#8221;, where he establishes that concepts as logical functions of one argument; &#8220;On Sense and Referent&#8221;, where he distinguishes between signs, representations, sense and referent; &#8220;On Concept and Object&#8221;, where he makes the distinction between objects, first-level concepts, and second-level concepts that describe first-level concepts, among other important distinctions.</p>
<p>Finally, he began his logicist enterprise writing the first volume of <span style="font-style:italic;">The Fundamental Laws of Arithmetik</span> (<span style="font-style:italic;">Grundgesetze der Arithmetik</span>), which he published in 1893.  The attempt to prove arithmetic&#8217;s derivability from logic would be completed in the second volume, which would be published in 1903.  Alas!  In 1902, Frege receives Russell&#8217;s letter.  Where Russell says the following:</p>

<div style="margin-left:40px;"><span style="font-style:italic;">I have known your </span>Grundgesetze der Arithmetik<span style="font-style:italic;"> for a year and a half, but only now have I been able to find the time for the thorough study I intend to devote to your writings.  I find myself in full accord with you on all main points, especially in your rejection of any psychological element in logic and in the value you attach to a concept-script for the foundations of mathematics and of formal logic, which, incidentally, can hardly be distinguished.  On many questions of detail, I find discussions, distinctions and definitions in your writings for which one looks in vain in other logicians.  On functions in particular (9 of your </span>Beggriffsschrift<span style="font-style:italic;">) I have been led independently to the same views even in detail. <span style="font-weight:bold;"> I have encountered a difficulty only on one point.  You assert (p. 17) that a function could also constitute the indefinite element.  This is what I used to believe, but this view now seems to me dubious because of the following contradiction:  Let </span></span><span style="font-weight:bold;">w</span><span style="font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;"> be the predicate of being a predicate which cannot be predicated of itself.  Can </span><span style="font-weight:bold;">w </span><span style="font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;">be predictated of itself?  From either answer follows its contradictory.  We must therefore conclude that </span><span style="font-weight:bold;">w</span><span style="font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;"> is not a predicate.  Likewise, there is no class (as a whole) of those classes which, as wholes, are not members of themselves.  From this I conclude that under certain circumstances a definable set does not form a whole.</span> (Beaney, 1999, p. 253)</div>

<p>Frege was not amused by this observation, in fact, he was simply shocked.  He would tell Russell in a letter in response:  &#8220;Your discovery of the contradiction has surprised me beyond words and, I should almost like to say, left me thunderstruck, because it has rocked the ground on which I meant to build arithmetic.&#8221; (Beaney, 1999, p. 254).  And indeed, thunderstruck he was.</p>
<p>If you did not understand what Russell was talking about, don&#8217;t despair.  We could see this easily with sets (which are the mathematical equivalent to logical classes).  There are indeed sets that do <span style="font-style:italic;">not</span> belong to themselves.  For example, a set of dogs is not itself a dog, therefore it does not belong to itself;  set of pencils is not itself a pencil, hence the set is not an element of itself; and so forth.  Now, here is the question:  <span style="font-style:italic;">Can we create the set of all sets that don&#8217;t belong to themselves?</span> If we are able to do that, then the question is:  <span style="font-style:italic;">Does that set belong to itself or not?</span> Hence, the paradox:  If the set of all sets that don&#8217;t belong to themselves indeed belonged to itself, then it would be a set that would <span style="font-style:italic;">not</span> belong to itself;  now, if it were not an element of itself, then it <span style="font-style:italic;">would</span> be an element of itself.  This is what has been popularly known as the Russell&#8217;s Paradox.  As a matter of fact, Ernst Zermelo discovered it before and separately from Russell, and wrote to David Hilbert and Edmund Husserl about it.  Both of them were deeply involved in set theory, and solving the paradoxes of what we today call the &#8220;Naïve Set Theory&#8221;. Therefore, this paradox should be rightfully called &#8220;the <em>Zermelo-Russell Paradox</em>&#8220;. Russell was also looking to solve paradoxes like these, which led him to his theory of types, which we will not discuss here.</p>
<p>But this was not the last letter from Russell to Frege.  In fact, Frege would be shocked in more ways than one, especially Russell&#8217;s response to Frege&#8217;s views on sense and referent.  As we all know, for Frege, we must distinguish between the subjective representations or physical signs on the one hand and the sense (meaning) on the other.  For instance, these signs, though different, have the same sense:</p>

<p>The first one is in Spanish, the second one in English, the third one in German, but even when the physical traits of these expressions (signs) is, <span style="font-style:italic;">they all have the same sense</span>.  Now, if I show you these signs:</p>

<p>then not only the signs (the physical traits) are different, but <span style="font-style:italic;">they have different sense</span>, but the same referent:  planet Venus.  These signs have different sense because they carry a different information, they have a different logical content.</p>
<p>The same way happens with sentences.  Sentences themselves are signs, which carry a logical content or a sense.  Frege uses the term &#8220;thought&#8221; to mean the sense of a sentence.  For example, the following sentences express the same thought:</p>

<p>But there was something very peculiar about thoughts that Russell did not like.  First, the fact that senses in general are objective.  This turns them into very strange platonic entities that are neither subjective representations nor physical objects.  For Frege, a thought or, more generally a sense, can be shared and grasped by other minds, while my subjective idea or psychological representation cannot be shared.  However, thoughts are not physical objects themselves.   Senses (and among them, thoughts) are abstract, and have a timeless character.  Frege would say in the preface to his <span style="font-style:italic;">Fundamental Laws of Arithmetic</span>:  &#8220;If it is true that I am writing this in my room on 13 July 1893, whilst the wind howls outside, then it remains true even if everyone should later hold it as false.&#8221;  (Beaney, 1999, p. 203).</p>
<p>Russell would really struggle with these platonic senses and thoughts.  In a series of letters to Frege, he expressed his serious dissatisfaction with them.  In one letter, Frege explained that the sense of the proper name is different from its referent.  That the sense of &#8220;the morning star&#8221; is actually different from Planet Venus itself.  He writes using another example:</p>

<div style="margin-left:40px;"><span style="font-style:italic;">Mont Blanc itself, with all its snowfields, is not a constituent of the thought that Mont Blanc is more than 4000 meters high [. . .]  The sense of the word &#8216;moon&#8217; is a constituent of the thought that the moon is smaller than the Earth.  The moon itself (i.e., the referent of the word &#8220;moon&#8221;) is not a part of the sense of the word &#8220;moon&#8221;, for then it would also be a constituent of that thought.</span>  (Coffa, 1991, p. 92; see also Kremer 1994, p. 256)</div>

<p>And to this Russell would reply, and would leave Frege with another shock &#8230;  may I say, a very very very different kind of shock than before:</p>
<p>
<div style="margin-left:40px;"><span style="font-style:italic;">I believe that in spite of all its snowfields Mont Blanc itself is a component part of what is actually asserted in the proposition &#8220;Mont Blanc is more than 4000 metres high.&#8221; We do not assert the thought, for this is a private psychological matter:  we assert the object of the thought, and this is, to my mind, a certain complex (an objective proposition, one might say) in which Mont Blanc itself is a component part.  If we do not admit this, then we get the conclusion that we know nothing at all about Mont Blanc.</span> (Coffa, 1991, p. 92; Kremer, 1994, p. 256)</div>

<p>Of course, Frege did not admit this kind of analysis.  It would be ludicrous to assume that a physical object with all  its snowfields is included in the sense or meaning of a sentence!  Would that mean that if I grasp a thought about Mont Blanc, my brain starts to freeze from all the snow?</p>
<p>Yet, there is another problem.  What if a sign has a sense that has no reference?  In &#8220;On Sense and Referent&#8221;, Frege gave a response to those kinds of situations.  If, for example, I talk about &#8220;the celestial body most distant from the Earth&#8221; or &#8220;the least rapidly convergent series&#8221;, or the &#8220;round square&#8221;, or &#8220;the greatest even number&#8221;, etc. we are expressing proper names that have sense, we <span style="font-style:italic;">do</span> understand what they mean.  However, such proper names have no referent.  The thoughts in which they occur are neither true nor false, because nothing can be predicated about them.  No biggie!  In Fregean terms, at the level of referent, the concept-word may have a referent, but when the proper name has no object, then that concept remains unsaturated, and therefore an assertive sentence containing such a proper name will never be true or false.</p>
<p>Even though Frege&#8217;s response seems to satisfy many of us, this is not so for Russell.  For him, any proposition about a round square, or the greatest even number <span style="font-style:italic;">has</span> to be false.  So, this is a real problem for him.</p>
<p>In the following articles we will address the  solution Russell proposed to eliminate Frege&#8217;s senses and solve the riddle of proper names with no referent.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Logic in Frege:  Normative Science?]]></title>

<p>One of the facts I&#8217;m increasingly agreeing with my former thesis director, despite the fact that I wished for such a long time to stay away from such controversies, is the fact that many Fregean scholars hold the mistaken belief that for Gottlob Frege logic is a normative science.  What does this mean?</p>
<p>According to the old conception of logic that has been prevalent since Aristotle, logic is nothing more than the rules for correct or right thinking.  So, this led many of the nineteenth century philosophers to think that logic is a branch of psychology (today we call this &#8220;<span style="font-style:italic;">psychologism</span>&#8220;).  Why?  Logic deals with what we <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> think, therefore, it is founded in psychology.</p>
<p>[Note:  I should clarify that for purposes of this article, the term "psychologist" will not mean those dedicated to the field or practice of psychology, but I mean those who held psychologism as being true).]</p>
<p>Psychologists were refuted by both Gottlob Frege and Edmund Husserl.  In the latter case, in his philosophical masterpiece, <span style="font-style:italic;">Logical Investigations</span>, we can see that Husserl elaborated a full,  careful, thorough and exhaustive refutation of psychologism; one that some authors have termed as a &#8220;memorable refutation&#8221;, one which psychologists never quite recovered, not even today.  Another refutation appears also in Gottlob Frege&#8217;s <span style="font-style:italic;">The Foundations of Arithmetic</span>, where he refutes mostly another kind of psychologism, that is the one that posits numbers and other mathematical entities as being products or constructions of the human mind.  Despite his logicist viewpoint, his refutation is excellent.  But I will not elaborate on that very much.</p>
<p>However, in other works such as the preface of his <span style="font-style:italic;">Basic Laws of Arithmetic</span>, in his postumously published writing <span style="font-style:italic;">Logic</span>, and in his famous essay &#8220;The Thought:  A Logical Enquiry&#8221;, we can see Frege&#8217;s refutation of the kind of psychologism we are talking about.  His refutation of psychologists has had a lesser impact in philosophy due to some carelessness on Frege&#8217;s part, mostly due to unwarranted attacks to many of his opponents and exaggerating his opponents&#8217; opinions on the matter.  However, this does not mean that most of his arguments are not valid.  They are still pertinent today.</p>
<p>However, many Fregean scholars, like Hans Sluga (who apparently recanted the position I&#8217;m going to mention) and many of those who have followed him, have been of the opinion that for Frege logic is a normative science, i.e. a science that tells us how we should think.</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;">Husserl as Frame of Reference</span></p>
<p>Now, there is no problem with Husserl regarding this, because from the very beginning, he&#8217;s perfectly clear that for him, logic is <span style="font-style:italic;">not</span> a normative science.  In the first volume of his <span style="font-style:italic;">Logical Investigations</span> titled &#8220;Prolegomena of Pure Logic&#8221;, he establishes the difference between a <span style="font-style:italic;">theoretical science</span> and a <span style="font-style:italic;">normative science</span>.  The former deals with what <span style="font-style:italic;">is</span>, while the latter deals with what <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> be.  Husserl argues that logic is theoretical in nature, which basically means that formal logic deals with objective laws for preserving propositional truth.  If logic deals with laws for the <span style="font-style:italic;">preservation of truth</span>, then if we want to find the truth we <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> follow logical laws.  In this way, for Husserl, normative laws are based on logical theoretical laws.  In other words, the <span style="font-style:italic;">norms</span> of how we should think <span style="font-style:italic;">are founded on logical theoretical laws</span>.</p>
<p>A simple Husserlian example can illustrate this.  A theoretical truth would be:  &#8220;Good soldiers are brave.&#8221;  This statement tells us only what <span style="font-style:italic;">is</span> true.  Now, if I say:  &#8220;To be a good soldier, he or she <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> be brave&#8221; then I&#8217;m expressing a <span style="font-style:italic;">normative</span> statement, which is founded on the theoretical statement.  This normative statement is telling us how someone <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> behave if he or she wants to be a good soldier.  But such norm is founded on the truth that a good soldier is brave.</p>
<p>In the same way, I can see a logical law, <span style="font-style:italic;">Modus Barbara</span>, as a theoretical law:  &#8220;If all As are Bs, and all Bs are Cs, then all As are Cs&#8221;.  Notice that nowhere in this law we are told how we should think.  It only states the way propositions (any propositions A, B, C whatsoever) <span style="font-style:italic;">are</span> related in order to preserve truth.  However, this truth can serve as a proper foundation for a normative law:  &#8220;If you are given that all As are Bs, and that all Bs are Cs, then you <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> conclude that all As are Cs.&#8221;</p>
<p>The same is true with mathematics, which for Husserl is logic&#8217;s sister discipline.  If I have:</p>

<p>where <span style="font-style:italic;">x</span> and <span style="font-style:italic;">y</span> can be any number whatsoever, this equation will never tell me how we should think.  It just expresses what <span style="font-style:italic;">is</span> true always.  Now, on this theoretical truth we can base a normative truth:  &#8220;To arrive at the product of the sum and difference of two numbers one <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> find the difference of their squares&#8221;.</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;font-weight:bold;">Gottlob Frege&#8217;s Views on Logic</span></p>
<p>Now, my argument in this article is that the prevalent view on Frege that he regarded logic as a normative science is wrong.  In fact, I think that it is a forced interpretation of Frege&#8217;s texts, and it is enough to look at them to be certainly aware that this is not true.  It has already been pointed out by my former teacher and thesis director Guillermo E. Rosado Haddock.  However, I became aware of this when I was writing my MA thesis.  In this article I&#8217;ll quote several pertinent passages that will show that this is true.</p>
<p>Of course, Frege does not make his distinction as clear as Husserl does in <span style="font-style:italic;">Logical Investigations</span>, but he <span style="font-style:italic;">does</span> make them.  Here is a passage from Frege&#8217;s preface of his important work <span style="font-style:italic;">Basic Laws of Arithmetic</span>, vol. 1:</p>
<p>[. . .]<span style="font-style:italic;"> It is the corrupting intrusion of psychology into logic.  What is crucial to the treatment of the science of logic is the conception of logical laws, and this in turn is connected with how the word &#8220;true&#8221; is understood.  That the logical laws should be guiding principles for thought in the attainment of truth is generally admitted at the outset; but it is only too easily forgotten.  The ambiguity of the word &#8220;law&#8221; is fatal here.  In one sense it states what is, in the other it prescribes what should be.  Only in the latter sense can the logical laws be called laws of thought in laying down how one should think.  Any law that states what is can be conceived as prescribing that one should think in accordance to it, and is therefore in that sense a law of thought. </span>[. . . ] <span style="font-style:italic;"> The latter then only deserve the name &#8220;law of thought&#8221; with more right if it should be meant by this that they are the most general laws, which prescribe universally how one should think if one is to think at all</span> (pp. XIV-XV).</p>
<p>This is the passage that has led to most of the confusion. If we look at this passage carefully we notice that the term &#8220;law of thought&#8221; as if it formulated here seems to indicate that logic is normative.  But we must be careful here.</p>
<p>First, the term &#8220;thought&#8221; [<span style="font-style:italic;">Gedanke</span>] in Frege does not refer to acts of psychological thinking (which is our usual connotation).  In his theory of sense and referents, he calls &#8220;thought&#8221; what we today call a &#8220;proposition&#8221;, that is, the sense or meaning of an assertive sentence or a statement.  A sentence is a sign, and two sentences can share one and the same thought.  For instance:  &#8220;Today is Monday&#8221; and &#8220;Hoy es lunes&#8221; are two different assertive sentences (two different signs), but they have the same sense (meaning), which means, they express the same thought.</p>
<p>Thoughts, for Frege, are atemporal entities, they are eternal in the truest sense.  Our <span style="font-style:italic;">act of thinking</span>, according to him, are acts of grasping thoughts, not of creating them.  Without a doubt, this is a platonist conception of meanings, but we shall not elaborate on this.  The point I wish to make is that for Frege thoughts are <span style="font-style:italic;">not</span> psychological objects or creations, they are not subjective.  Instead they are objective and graspable and shared by many minds that grasp them.</p>
<p>Now, we can understand better what he means that logic are the &#8220;laws of thought&#8221;.  He means by this that they are <span style="font-style:italic;">laws that exist independently of the human mind</span>, and that <span style="font-style:italic;">they prescribe</span> how our mind <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> think if we ever want to attain true thoughts.  We should point out that, for Frege, logic as the &#8220;laws of thought&#8221; does <span style="font-style:italic;">not</span> mean the &#8220;laws of psychological thinking&#8221;.  He states clearly after the passage above:</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;">But the expression &#8220;law of thought&#8221; tempts us into viewing these laws as governing thinking in the same way as the laws of nature [causal laws] govern events in the external world.  They can be nothing other than psychological laws, since thinking is a mental process.  And if logic were concerned with these psychological laws, then it would be a part of psychology.  And so it is in fact conceived.  The laws of thought can then be conceived as guiding principles in so far as they indicate a mean, just as we can say what counts as normal human digestion, grammatical speech, or fashionable dress.  We can only say:  the</span> holding as true <span style="font-style:italic;">of things by people conforms on average with these laws, at present and to the best of our knowledge;  if one therefore wants to remain in accordance with this mean, one will conform to them.  But just as what is fashionable today ceases to be fashionable after a while and is not at present fashionable amongst the Chinese, so too the psychological laws of thought can only be laid down as authoritative with qualifications.  This is certainly so if logic is concerned with things</span> being held as true <span style="font-style:italic;">rather than with their</span> being true<span style="font-style:italic;">.  And these are what psychological logicians confuse</span> [. . .]  I<span style="font-style:italic;">n response I can only say: </span>being true <span style="font-style:italic;">is quite different from </span>being held as true<span style="font-style:italic;">, whether by one, or by many, or by all, and is in no way to be reduced to it.  There is no contradiction in something being true which is held by everyone as false.  I understand by logical laws not psychological laws of </span>holding as true<span style="font-style:italic;">, but laws of</span> being true.<span style="font-style:italic;"> If it is true that I am writing this in my room on 13 July 1893, whilst the wind howls outside, then it remains true even if everyone should later hold it as false.  If being true is thus independent of being recognized as true by anyone, then the laws of truth are not psychological laws </span>(pp. XV-XVI).</p>
<p>This last passage makes it clear at last.  Logical laws are not normative at all, they are theoretical in the Hhusserlian sense.  Logical laws are <span style="font-style:italic;">laws of being true</span>, or, as he would later repeat, the <span style="font-style:italic;">laws of truth</span>.  They are &#8220;laws of thought&#8221; in the sense that these laws of truth <span style="font-style:italic;">prescribe</span> the way we should think if we want to attain the truth.</p>
<p>In his work <span style="font-style:italic;">Logic</span> we find this clearer still:</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;">The word &#8220;true&#8221; can be used to indicate such a goal of logic, just as can &#8220;good&#8221; for ethics and &#8220;beautiful&#8221; for aesthetics.</span> [. . .]</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;">Like ethics, logic can also be called a normative science.  How must I think in order to reach the goal, truth?  We expect logic to give us the answer to this question, but we do not demand of it that it should go into what is peculiar to each branch of knowledge and its subject matter.  On the contrary, the task we assign to logic is only that of saying what holds with utmost generality for all thinking, whatever its subject matter.  We must assume that the rules for our thinking and for our holding something to be true are prescribed by the laws of truth.  The former are given along with the latter.  Consequently we can also say:  logic is the science of the most general laws of truth.</span> (p. 139).</p>
<p>Here, for all practical purposes Frege&#8217;s position is the same as Husserl&#8217;s.  The normative rules (the rules for our thinking and for holding something to be true) is founded on logic as theoretical (laws of truth).</p>
<p>Finally, we find this clearer still in his philosophical essay &#8220;The Thought&#8221;:</p>
<p><span style="font-style:italic;">Just as &#8220;beautiful&#8221; points the way for aesthetics and &#8220;good&#8221; for ethics, so do words like &#8220;true&#8221; for logic.  All sciences have truth as their goal; but logic is also concerned with it in a different way:  logic has much the same relation to truth as physics has to weight or heat.  To discover truths is the task of all sciences;  it falls to logic to discern the laws of truth. [. . .] From the laws of truth there follow prescriptions about asserting, thinking, judging, inferring.  People may very well interpret the expression &#8220;law of thought&#8221; by analogy with &#8220;law of nature&#8221; and then have in mind general features of thinking as a mental occurrence.  A law of thought in this sense would be a psychological law.  And so they might come to believe that logic deals with the mental process of thinking and with the psychological laws  in accordance with which this takes place.  That would be misunderstand the task of logic, for truth has not here been given its proper place. Error and superstition have  causes just as much as correct cognition.  Whether what you take for true is false or true, your so taking it comes about in accordance with psychological laws.  A derivation from these laws, an explanation of the mental process that ends in taking something to be true, can never take the place of proving what is taken to be true. [. . .]  In order to avoid any misunderstanding and prevent the blurring of the boundary between psychology and logic, I assign to logic the task of discovering the laws of truth, not the laws of taking things to be true or of thinking.  The referent of the word &#8220;true&#8221; is spelled out in the laws of truth</span> (pp. 58-59).</p>
<p>Frege cannot be clearer.  Logical laws as the laws of truth <span style="font-style:italic;">prescribe</span> the way we <span style="font-style:italic;">should</span> infer, judge, think.  In other words, logical laws, which are theoretical, provides the foundations for the normative laws we should follow if we want to attain the truth.</p>
<p><span style="font-weight:bold;font-style:italic;">Conclusion</span></p>
<p>Sluga&#8217;s former way of viewing Frege has been very influential in many scholars in analytic philosophy.  The first time I found it was when I read Amadeo Notturno&#8217;s book <span style="font-style:italic;">Objectivity, Rationality and the Third Realm</span>, where Notturno echoed Sluga&#8217;s views on Frege as a kind of Neo-Kantian philosopher interested in epistemological matters.</p>
<p>But if we look at Frege&#8217;s  great works and we see that this is not the case.  He was centered in his logicist enterprise, in showing that arithmetic could be derived from logic.  He was not interested in epistemological matters until very late in his life.  We see some of that in &#8220;The Thought&#8221;, and much later in his works before he died.</p>
<p>This misconception of Frege as a sort of Neo-Kantian has led to the mistaken view that he regarded logical laws as normative laws of thinking.  These passages I have shown above clearly contradict that interpretation.  As I have said in the introduction, this is nothing but a forced interpretation on Frege&#8217;s philosophy.</p></div>

<p><em><strong>Mittelständische, handwerkliche Fleischereien fallen unzweifelhaft in die Kategorie energie-intensiv. </strong></em></p>
<p><em><strong>Entsprechend groß ist der Wunsch der Betriebs-Inhaber nach Planungssicherheit im Energie-Beschaffungsssektor</strong>.</em></p>

<p><strong>Folgt auf die Finanz- und Wirtschaftskrise jetzt die Energiekrise? </strong></p>
<p>Auch in diesem Fall sind wir hier auf Fleischer/Metzgerblog mit unserer Sorge nicht allein.<br />
So habe ich auch dieses Mal wieder gern die Einladung der <a href="http://www.normannia-nibelungen.de/">Burschenschaft Normannia-Nibelungen</a> zu einer besonderen Veranstaltung angenommen. Im Rahmen der IV. <a href="http://www.bielefelder-ideenwerkstatt.de/">Bielefelder Ideenwerkstatt</a> referierten dort am 08. und 09. November 2008 sechs namhafte Experten zu dem Ideenwerkstatt-Leitsatz „Energie- und Rohstoffmangel – die Welt am Scheidepunkt?“. Ich hatte mich als Hörer zunächst für drei Themen vormerken lassen, die mir aufgrund ihrer Fragestellung den Leitsatz aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven zu erörtern in Aussicht stellten. – Ich sollte nicht enttäuscht werden. Denn es wurde teilweise recht kontrovers argumentiert:<br />

Bei derzeit gegebener politischer Konstellation in Deutschland wird die Abhängigkeit insbesondere von Öl und Gas zunehmen.<br />
Solarstrom liefert in Deutschland derzeit keinen nennenswerten Betrag zur Energieversorgung. </em></strong></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Die Lösung, die als Frage formuliert wurde:</strong></p>

<blockquote><p><strong><em>„Kein Öl. Kein Gas. Gute Nacht Europa? Auswegstrategien für eine saubere Zukunft“</em></strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>So wie ich ihn verstanden habe, vertrat der Referent folgende Überzeugung</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Bei Fortführung der derzeitigen Energiepolitik Deutschlands wird die Abhängigkeit Deutschlands von Energie-Einfuhren weiter zunehmen.<br />
Bis zum Jahre 2020 wird c. p.  der Import-Anteil bereits bei 70% des gesamten Energiebedarfs liegen.<br />
Durch Ressourcen-Verknappung (Stichwort: <a href="http://www.peakoil.de">Peakoil</a>) wird sich international der militärische Druck erhöhen. </em></strong></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Folge: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Ölpreisfrage könnte nach Meinung des Referenten zur politischen Opportunität werden (Es bekäme nur derjenige Staat Öl, der sich „gut“ verhält.)</em></strong></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Die empfohlene Lösung</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Erneuerbare Energien seien zu kultivieren, um die Öl- und Gasabhängigkeit zu reduzieren.<br />
Dezentralisierung der Strom-Erzeugung (Solardächer) sei sinnvoll.<br />
Als größter Engpass auf dem entsprechenden Wege dorthin sei die „Unkenntnis des Endverbrauchers hinsichtlich der Möglichkeiten erneuerbarer Energien“ zu bekämpfen</em></strong></p></blockquote>

Nach dem Studium der Physik zehn Jahre Industrietätigkeit. Danach Berufung an die FH Wiesbaden. <p><strong>Die Kern-Aussagen seines Referats habe ich wie folgt verstanden: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p><em><strong>Aufgrund der derzeit großen Abhängigkeit Deutschlands von ausländischen Energiequellen ist die Versorgungssicherheit auch weiterhin eine der großen Sorgen Deutschlands<br />
Regenerative Energien stehen in Deutschland derzeit nur in eng begrenztem Umfang zur Verfügung.<br />
Solar- und Windenergie fallen zudem diskontinuierlich an. Der Energiebedarf jedoch muss stetig und zuverlässig gedeckt werden.<br />
Das Netz jedoch ist kein Speicher. Das heißt: Wird die benötigte Energiemenge vorübergehend von den regenerativen Energiequellen nicht geliefert, muss ein leistungsfähiger Energiespeicher zur Verfügung stehen.<br />
Die notwendigen Energie-Speicher hat man in Deutschland nicht in ausreichendem Maße mitentwickelt. </strong></em></p></blockquote>

<p><strong>Folge:</strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Hier herrsche Nachholbedarf. Das geeignete Speichermedium sei bekannt und stehe in Form von Wasserstoff zur Verfügung. </em></strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>Die empfohlene Lösung: </strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>Die Wasserstofftechnik ist nach Meinung des Referenten weiter zu entwickeln. Denn Wasserstofftechnik und regenerative Energien seien bedeutende Glieder der zukünftigen Energietechnik. </em></strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong><em></em></strong></p>
<p>Mein Fazit:<br />
Allein schon die teilweise recht kontroversen Aussagen bzw. Empfehlungen dieser drei Referenten sorgten während der Veranstaltung für soliden Gesprächsstoff. Fakt ist: Die fossilen Energieträger sind begrenzt. Die Uhr tickt. Wie ist Ihre Meinung?</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>Securitatea îi întinde o momeală. Îi dă recomandare de a pleca din nou în străinătate, dar aprobarea îi va fi refuzată la secţia de paşapoarte. Intenţia era de a fi folosit pe post de propagandă împotriva mărturiilor date de Richard Wurmbrand în occident. Între timp, (&#8230;) este urmărit cu tehnică operativă, i se interceptează scrisorile şi i se ascultă convorbirile telefonice, fiind suspect că vrea să rămână în străinătate dacă primeşte aprobare de plecare. Urmărirea confirmă bănuielile, iar confirmări sosesc şi din partea altor informatori sau agenţi.</p>
<p>Raport de aprobare a deplasării în RFG a lui (&#8230;) care fusese reactivat în 26.06.1975 sub numele conspirativ &#8220;Cucu&#8221;. „Informatorul urmează să fie instruit contrainformativ, iar în contactele sale cu diverse personalităţi cultice din RFG să prezinte în mod real [sic!] libertăţile religioase de care se bucură adventiştii din ţara noastră, diminuând astfel propaganda ostilă României, desfăşurată de Richard Wurmbrand şi adepţii săi din RFG.”</p>
<p>Copie scrisoare (&#8230;) către o cumnată din Australia (23.06.1978). „. . . Bucuros aş veni să fiu pastorul fraţilor români de acolo, să avem o comunitate, să tipărim reviste în limba română, să avem un post de radio şi TV, să ţinem un ciclu de conferinţe pentru români, etc. Dacă prin viaţa şi lucrarea noastră vor fi câştigate mai multe suflete pentru Hristos acolo, atunci prin harul Său voi ajunge. Aceasta trebuie făcută cu chibzuinţă şi călăuzire divină şi nu cu riscul asumat de alţii. Cred că mă înţelegi.”</p>
<p>Notă dată de agentul &#8220;Matei Gh.&#8221; despre (&#8230;) şi familia, la locul conspirativ &#8220;Turn&#8221; (11.09.1980). Nota ofiţerului: &#8220;(&#8230;) este informatorul &#8220;Referent&#8221; [o nouă schimbare de nume conspirativ] care are un spirit informativ foarte slab şi despre care sunt unele suspiciuni că acţionează ca să ajungă un fanatic în străinătate, sub masca unei excursii, de unde să nu se mai înapoieze.&#8221;</p>
