Dall’analisi dei referrer vedo che un po’ di persone sono arrivate qui dai commenti a questo posto del matematto .mau.

Se li si legge, si vede la curiosa dinamica che ha seguito il flusso delle risposte.

Dalla semplice analisi tecnico-razionale in risposta alla domanda che .mau. si poneva, alle considerazioni sull’approccio diverso di ingegneri informatici ed informatici (a differenza dei secondi, i primi sanno che il computer ha un filo per la corrente… magnifica, devo condividerla con qualche collega), a quelle sui suicidi nelle metropolitane e se vi sia una connessione più logica, funzionale, di reddito o di impatto mediatico sulla scelta di quale linea della metro scegliere a Milano per porre fine alla propria vita.

Es ärgerte mich ja schon immer, dass es auf WordPress.com keine Möglichkeit gibt, Mister Wong-Buttons zu benutzen. Gut, natürlich kann man einen Link auf die “Add URL”-Seite von Mister Wong setzen, aber dann muss ich alle Infos, wie Titel der Seite, URL und die Tags, selber eintragen. Diese Arbeit kann natürlich mein Bookmarklet übernehmen, aber das hat den Nachteil, dass man es immer per Hand einfügen muss. Bei jedem einzelnen Artikel, was natürlich sehr mühsam ist …

Ich habe mir also überlegt, wie ich das Problem lösen könnte und kam zu folgender Idee:
Eine simple HTML-Datei auf einem Webspace von mir liest den Referrer aus und ruft (etwas unelegant, ich weiß) per Browser-Refresh die Mister Wong-Seite auf und übergibt dabei den Referrer an die Seite.

Leider kann auf diesem Weg weder der Titel noch die Tags ausgelesen werden, da die externe Seite aus Sicherheitsgründen nicht die WordPress-Seite per Javascript auslesen kann und auf WordPress.com ja bekanntlich kein Javascript erlaubt ist. Aber so kann zumindest die URL an Mister Wong übergeben werden. Das ist deshalb so praktisch, weil nun ein Mister Wong-Button in der Sidebar genügt, um für alle Artikel einen MisterWong-Button zu erstellen, der funktioniert und die URL schon mal korrekt einträgt. Mister Wong lädt dann per JSON den Titel der Webseite aus. Wenn dann auch noch durch andere User bereits Tags vergeben wurden ist diese Art des bookmarken kaum noch von dem Javascript-gestützen Auslesen der Werte zu unterscheiden.

Im Blog verlinkt man dann (mit angepasster URL!) in einem Textwidget so:

Wichtiger Hinweis: Das Ganze betrifft nur WordPress.COM und nicht selbst-gehostete WordPress-Installationen. Diese benutzen am besten den Code von der Mister Wong-Seite.

Diese oben vorgestellte Lösung ist auch deshalb so praktisch, weil AddThis leider ein großes Problem hat. WordPress.com unterstützt den AddThis-Button zwar eigentlich, aber leider verweist dieser amerikanische Dienst auf die internationale Version von Mister Wong, also Mister-Wong.com und nicht auf Mister-Wong.de. Aus welchen Gründen auch immer sind diese beiden Seiten getrennt, das heißt ich kann mich mit meinem deutschen Account nicht bei der internationalen Seite anmelden und zwei Accounts will ich eigentlich nicht pflegen müssen. Eine entsprechende Support-Anfrage bei Mister-Wong, warum das so ist und ob man es ändern kann, wurde schlicht nie beantwortet. Schade eigentlich.

Update: Habe noch einen Infotext hinzugefügt, falls z.B. die HTML-Weiterleitung im Browser deaktiviert wurde oder sie nicht unterstützt wird.

Man könnte (sollte!?) noch eine Überprüfung des Referrers vornehmen, um z.B. zu verhindern, dass andere die Datei nutzen.

Update 16.11.2009: Durch einen Artikel von Martin habe ich noch mal den AddThis-Service getestet und festgestellt, dass AddThis inzwischen auf Mister-Wong.de verlinkt. Somit erübrigen sich meine komplizierten Varianten und ich empfehle den AddThis-Service zu nutzen.

Articles with a key next to them are subscriber-only.

If you click on an article that is only for subscribers you will get a small preview, and then be asked to subscribe to view the full article.

There are many ways to avoid having to subscribe but still view full-length articles like subscribers would. In this article I will explain two, I would advise the average user to use the first and more tech-savvy people to use the second.

Method 1: Google It!

The first and by far simplest method to view subscriber-only articles for free is simply to search for the title on Google News! The Wall Street Journal Online has an agreement with Google whereby all Google News users who find an article through it can view the entire article: for free!

Search for an article on Google News.

Find the article you want to read.

Enjoy your full subscriber article.

However there is also a smarter way to this… read on.

Method 2: Make it look like you Googled it

As you know if the Wall Street Journal Online thinks you got the news article from Google it will display the full article. However how does it know where you got the article from?

Simply put it reads the information from the HTTP referrer. Without going into too much detail the HTTP referrer is a bit of information that your browser sends to web pages to tell them where they got the address from.

Because it is your computer that sends the referrer it is fairly easy to fake (or “spoof”) it.

If you are using Firefox then this can be done automatically every time you visit the Wall Street Journal Online using an addon. Unfortunately there is currently no simple way to do this on Internet Explorer or other browsers, so you will have to continue using Method 1 if you aren’t using firefox..

To do this download the addon RefControl (there are many different addons that can control referrer information but for this purpose RefControl works great).

Once you have downloaded it restart Firefox and go to Tools > RefControl Options.

Then click on Add Site and set the Site to “online.wsj.com” and the Action to Custom: “http://www.search.google.com”, as shown in the image below.

Once RefControl is set up you can view all WSJ Online articles for free, without having to do anything, just like a subscriber.

In the 6+ months that I’ve been blogging about virtual events, virtual tradeshows and virtual worlds, I’ve learned a lot.  I’ve learned from the research that I’ve done in this arena, I’ve learned from insightful comments left here by readers and I’ve learned a bit about blogging.  I decided to skim through the nifty historical charting provided by WordPress and thought I’d share some insights into what’s worked well here.  Let’s start with the most obvious one – the top 5 blog postings (by page views – listed by top post first):

1. Review: Lenovo’s eLounge Virtual World – what I learned here is to create timely blog content that associates with major events.  Lenovo unveiled their eLounge virtual world (powered by Nortel’s web.alive) at CES 2009.  I decided to download it, try it out and review it.  Because my posting was a relative first (in terms of eLounge reviews), it got the lion’s share of search engine traffic.  I saw this both in referral data and by tracking relative rankings on the search engines themselves.  Additionally, a large amount of traffic was sourced from a popular blog about Nortel (allaboutnortel.com).
2. Interview With Nic Sauriol, Venture Lead on Nortel’s web.alive Platform – if you strike a chord with an interesting posting, ride the momentum and generate follow-on postings that provide more information (or additional insight).  Nic Sauriol provided me with a virtual tour of eLounge (for my original blog posting), so I followed up later with an interview, asking Nic to provide new information on web.alive since the eLounge launch.
3. Insights And Experiences From Virtual World Experts – here, I summarized a panel discussion for which I was an audience member.  It featured top notch virtual worlds experts – and as a result, this blog posting received a great deal of referral traffic from related blogs (e.g. Wagner James Au’s New World Notes).
4. How To Use Social Media To Stay Current On Virtual Events And Virtual Worlds – this posting had the benefit of being posted on StumbleUpon, which generated a nice spike in traffic.  Hard to say whether the traffic surge resulted in new, regular readers – or whether they were one-time, curious Joe’s.  Regardless, I learned how powerful a single referrer (e.g. StumbleUpon, digg, etc.) can be.
5. Hey Kids! I’ve Got a Virtual World For You – much of the traffic for this posting is due to SEO – it contains terms that are popular in search (e.g. My Little Pony, Webkinz, Club Penguin, etc.) – while I did not write this with the intent to generate search engine traffic, it does demonstrate the importance of writing content with SEO in mind (if your goal is to generate traffic from SEO).

On my videos- on the statsitics and data there are linking websites which i dont know about and sadly ive given over 3,000 views to 2 petty gossip websites!!!!!

the thing that pisses me off is that on each video with THEIR link over 500 people have clicked on it out of 1,000 views! I don’t even work/read these blogs! So basicially im an advertiser

AND NOBODY TOLD ME OUT OF THOSE 500 CLICKS!!!!

Their blog didnt even notice either but their on wordpress and im sure on their stats it would of been a reffer or something stupid with links on how people got to their blog on the stats which the public cant see look here:

I spend a lot of time to frame the following code. This code tracks all referrer urls and passes it you specified file url.

just replace your domain with “sampledomain” in the following code.

WordPress oferă posibilitatea vizualizării site-urilor de pe care cititorii au dat click ca să ajungă pe Clujul Evanghelic (în Dashboard -> Blog Stats -> Referrers). Mai jos se poate vedea top 10 site-uri. Mulţumesc editorilor acestor site-uri pentru linkuri şi cititorilor pentru vizite.

Por enquanto ainda tenho de manter o emprego das 9 às 6… Mas muito em breve espero poder mandar o patrão dar uma curva (não nos apetece a todos?…) O euromilhões está difícil de me saír. Logo a mim que ajudava tanta gente (já ouvi esta em qualquer lado). Pelo menos já comecei a ter referrers ao blog, o que é um bom sinal.

Se alguém me quiser dar uma ajuda neste meio, agradeco muito, até porque sou um completo tosco…

Come siano i capelli da manager non lo so, non credo esistano volumi dei qualche business school dediti all’analisi del fenomeno.

Lasciamo perdere le nonne che paiono essere un classico delle ricerche in rete, lasciando il dubbio se vi siano orde di gerontofili in circolazione.

Ma una ricerca come “http://danzasullacqua.wordpress.com/2009″, cosa mi significa? Non una ma 4 volte 4. Non era più veloce digitarlo direttamente bella barra del browser ?

Kheqi dah pokoknya. Sudah berhari-hari kalo nengok di blog stats, banyak banget pengunjung blog saya ini datang dari wordpress.com tag directory tapi yang mesum-mesum. Padahal sudah saya lacak tag-tag saya, sama sekali ndak ada yang mengandung unsur porno, mesum, xxx, jorok, kemproh atau semacam itu lah. Sedangkan kalo saya klik balik ke tag surfer, ndak tanda-tanda bahwa halaman itu mengarah ke sini. Jadi bingung.

Ini nih saya ambil screenshot dari referrers tgl 19 Januari. Sebenernya panjang banget, jadi saya potong yang teratas aja supaya bisa keliatan. Sering blog stats mendatangkan manfaat. Tapi sekali ini blog stats bikin pusing karena bikin saya penasaran untuk cari tau.
