I really love Flickr and it’s support of various kinds of Creative Commons licensing, which I’ve used to share my photos with various websites.  My favorite site that I’ve shared with lately is Oddly Specific, which I heard about at the Microsoft PDC09 keynote speech, and to which I  submitted my favorite sign ever:

I really love their site, and will be submitting often.  But this posts is about the times that I see my work in unexpected places.

Occasionally, I look through the referrers to my photostream, though, and find very amusing (and usually fully attributed) uses of my photos. For instance, I have never been to Foley, Alabama or the Magnolia Hotel, and yet they used one of my photos -

Of course, I’m extremely flattered that they used my photograph, and will now have to visit both their hotel and their Antique Rose Trail – I might even offer them a new photo from in, instead of them having to use this one from the Antique Rose Emporium in Independence, TX.

This Digg post cause my Flickr photo of a funnel cloud jump to 35 thousand views in a couple of days.  Imagine my surprise when I stopped by my Flickr statistics, and saw all those views!!!!

Oddly, I also show up on several flower references like for Bells of Ireland and Indian Blankets. I love taking pictures of flowers, so I really enjoy seeing my pictures being used as examples on these sites.

I guess the moral of this ramble down Flickr lane is to keep an eye on your statistics and referrers – you never know where you’re going to see your own photograph looking back at you!!

There is just something a tad creepy about blogging.  I was shamed into starting a blog when everyone around me was appalled I was so unenlightened.  I thought of a few witty things to ramble on about and some friends “pimped my blog” until I amassed an average readership of 31 a day.  On 6/26/08 a record 185 people dropped in for a little virtual visit.  Nothing says friendship like a little pimping.  Thanks guys for helping me make it to the big time!

Then came my leave of absence.  Life got busy and blogging takes time.  A good blog can take over an hour to produce with editing, potty breaks, and blurry vision from rubbing your eyes after forgetting you’re wearing makeup.  I just couldn’t bring myself to blog about what I’m having for dinner or why I seem to be the only one with the manual dexterity to install a roll of toilet paper in the dispenser.  Well, I might be able to bring myself to blog about that one.  Give it time.  After getting out of the habit, days passed then months and my blog grew a few cobwebs.  Yet, I still had a loyal following.  It seems at least five people a day visited my blog during those dark months.  Given one was my mother but that still leaves four people who faithfully looked every day to see if I had returned to the blogosphere.

Now that I’m back and have committed to being a weekend blogger (I figure I can be witty at least twice a week), my stats are going up again.  I’m up to a solid 16 visits a day!  Now this may not seem like a huge accomplishment considering some of my favorite bloggers have hundreds of visits a day but I’m pretty pleased.  After all, these are 16 people who are voluntarily wanting to know what I’m thinking.  I’m a teacher.  I’m used to spending my days with 58 people who do everything in their power to ignore what I’m saying!

Lately I’ve been rather fascinated by the “referrers” list.  This is a list of other blogs that have posted links to your site and people have then clicked on them to find you.  Oddly enough, not one of the referrers has been my mother’s blog which led me to wonder, “Who are these other bloggers who have linked to me?”  This past week I’ve been clicking on them to visit their blogs (you may thank me for raising your stats by sending chocolate).  I’ve found a grain of something in common with most of them but then there are the mysteries. 

So, just who the heck are you people?  The only one who ever comments on my blog is my mother.  You’d think if others were such fans that they would put a link to me on their blog they’d at least comment with a smiley face.  See, a little creepy.  So let’s play a little game.  We’ll call it “Fans and Stalkers”.  If you’ve read this post, leave a little note.  Hey, I figure if you can spend hours a day farming on Facebook you have the time to respond to my blog!   Maybe introduce yourself, tell the world how you got here (here to the blog, we already know about the sperm and egg thing).  I’ll keep track of how many visitors I have over the next week and how many comments are left.  Then we’ll see how many fans I have and how many stalkers.  Don’t you just love a social experiment?  Ready, set, GO!

If your visitors are finding what they want on your site they are more likely to contact you or make a purchase. Google Analytics is a powerful and free tool – the data it provides can indicate where you need to make changes to your site.

Referrers
Referrers indicate how your visitors arrived at your site, from this you can infer your customer’s intentions from the keywords they used to get to your site. When you know what your customers are interested are looking for you can modify your pages accordingly.

Here are just a couple of examples:

Landing Pages
It would be handy to know where most visitors enter your site, you would know where to dedicate your design and editing efforts – it is often assumed that visitors land on the home page although this often not the case. You could spend hours dedicating your best efforts to fine tuning your landing page but your visitors actually land on a sub page.

Bounce Rate
The bounce rate indicates where users have visited to your site then quickly left – this page may then need a rethink so that visitors are engaged.

There is a wealth of other features for ecommerce sites; if you are selling online you could probably sell more by analysing your users path through your site.

Anyways you may see the title and i’m absolutely angry with YouTube!!!

On my videos- on the statsitics and data there are linking websites which i dont know about and sadly ive given over 3,000 views to 2 petty gossip websites!!!!!

the thing that pisses me off is that on each video with THEIR link over 500 people have clicked on it out of 1,000 views! I don’t even work/read these blogs! So basicially im an advertiser

AND NOBODY TOLD ME OUT OF THOSE 500 CLICKS!!!!

Their blog didnt even notice either but their on wordpress and im sure on their stats it would of been a reffer or something stupid with links on how people got to their blog on the stats which the public cant see look here:

Now, what im angry about is that on my settings i told youtube about my blog and its nowhere to be seen on any of my videos except my profile page which i had to paste in!

So hey! If anyone has got a mysterouis blog that i dont know about, ask youtube and tell them to add you to my links and in over 1 month you will have over 3,000 views (sarcasism)

And what im really angry about is that not only where they posted on my videos-

THEY WERE ONLY POSTED ON THE LINKS ON THE VIDEOS THAT HAD THE MOST VIEWS, COMMENTS, RATINGS!!!!!

But the un-popular videos where left alone!

If i EVER see those bloggers on stardoll- I’ll tell them what i think of them! Either;

a) they found a way of adding themselves to stardoll videos by hacking

b) Their lucky twats

Une activité dont je ne me lasse jamais : consulter mes referrers (ces liens et/ou termes de recherche qui ont amené les visiteurs sur mon blogue). Ils me font osciller entre l’amusement et la perplexité, selon les jours. À la longue, on peut remarquer certaines tendances. Curieusement, plusieurs gens (ou une seule et même personne vraiiiiiiment persistante) aboutissent ici en cherchant une traduction française des paroles de Baby Got Back (ben oui, c’est « I like big butts traduction » qui trône — curieusement! — au haut de ma liste de referrers).

Faudrait demander à Jeune Chilly Chill (mon roux préféré de la scène locale, catégorie rap, et expert ès adaptation-de-tounes-rap-américaines) d’en faire une version française. (Mon adaptation personnelle de la chose s’est toujours limitée à l’intro parlée. «Oh mon dieu, Becky. Regarde son cul.»)

En attendant on le checke au Zoobizarre demain soir (9 avril). Peut-être pas de Baby Got Back en vue, mais des tonnes de hits, ça c’est sûr. Un 10$ bien investi pour financer la sortie de l’attendu Chillage extrême, dont la sortie était originalement prévue… à l’hiver 2007-2008!

Por enquanto ainda tenho de manter o emprego das 9 às 6… Mas muito em breve espero poder mandar o patrão dar uma curva (não nos apetece a todos?…) O euromilhões está difícil de me saír. Logo a mim que ajudava tanta gente (já ouvi esta em qualquer lado). Pelo menos já comecei a ter referrers ao blog, o que é um bom sinal.

This seems to be marginally debatable:

Cubestat says that my blog is worth $1,436.64 (can I get that in cash?). They also tell me that I get an average of 656 page views per day and that I could generate a daily ad revenue of $1.97.

Website Outlook gave me a slightly better “offer,” estimating that my blog is worth $1,613.30, adding that I get an average of 735 daily page views and could therefore generate a daily ad revenue of $2.21.

All in all, I’d say things look good, if a bit boring – maybe it’s time to spice things up?

La sexy bici, vabbè. Il pelo una volta lo si cercava nell’uovo ma quacuno pare avere adattato la cosa ai tempi attuali.

L’ultima è un classico del periodo. Mi chiedo solo perchè una “porca” debba mettersi il tutone da Babbo Natale e qualcuno eccitarsi.

It never ceases to amaze me, day by day, How many people view my site. Some days are better then others but hey some posts are better then others.  I love knowing what tags and categories bring people here. It’s kind of interesting to me what people look up. The referrers are even more interesting. I get linked or clicked on at other sites through referrers. 

Amazingly, it seems like people are noticing the little things I say. So I guess I better get a move on and start writing more.  Thanks to all that view on a daily basis and Hey! Leave a comment, suggestion, complaint. You may give me something more interesting to talk about!

There you have it the true story behind Sophie sans scrupule, and yes even an uninteresting post on how I won a ticket for an Alela Diane concert gets me hits. The total of transition diary posts got about 1700 direct hits, and then there’s of course all the indirect hits I am unable to count, but they’re there. To all of you whom have been visiting and reading my blog, a sincere and warm thank you!

Traffic was up big-time last week on The Bovine. Following all the interest around the announcement of the judge’s verdict on Monday, we had two record breaking days with hit counts well in excess of 500. The graph below plots the number of hits, week by week. By the Sunday before last we had clocked 5,000 hits but by yesterday (Sunday) that total was pushing 7,400.

One interesting new development is that last week we started to get considerable traffic on one of our older stories, the one on the NAU and raw chocolate. Apparently someone submitted it to “reddit.com”, where it came to the attention of people who would not otherwise have found their way to this blog. It’s now our third most popular story of all time after “A few words about milk and rights”, which was our first post on this blog, and the “About” page. I was looking at my stats today and I noticed that under the section titled “referrers” I have a number of links to facebook and hotmail? *puzzled*

I did a search and found an answer in the wordpress forum that states it’s more than likely that a link to my blog is being emailed around. Interesting.

I think it’s the post “Time to move on”  which is causing this interest since the stats on that have rocketed and my guess is other foreigners in Egypt are searching for more information about the new rule changes.

If people out there are worrying about this issue why not post in the comments section and share your stories. I’m going to contact my embassy on Sunday to find out more information so will post what I hear in case anyone else comes along.

Good luck wherever life leads those of you with no options, I hope you find another happy place. My guess is there will be a number of lucky Egyptian men out there suddenly getting proposals from foreign women! They’ll think it’s laylatul qadr come early!
