When we write music, we often find ourselves fixated on the melody, chords and lyrics. But it’s the controlling of musical energy in Regina Spektor’s second single from her album “Far” that captivates and keeps listeners focussed and hooked. Add to that the way verse ideas are balanced with contrasting elements in the refrain and instrumental break, and “Eet” is a song that succeeds on many levels.

Here is a formal analysis of “Eet”:

Melodic Analysis

Though in Db major, the vocal melodies created for the song are largely pentatonic, positioned between the dominant notes of Db major, avoiding the 4^th and 7^th notes of the key. In general, the vocal lines consist more of ascending patterns than descending ones, but during the instrumental break descending patterns largely predominate. This kind of contrast is crucial to the form: vocal ascending lines moving generally from the 6^th note of the scale upward, and instrumental descending lines moving from the tonic note downward.

Harmonic Analysis

There are some lovely harmonies in this song: The opening Bbm includes an added Eb note, and gives the impression that it’s a sort of inverted pedal (a note held through several chords.) But in fact it’s the Db of this chord that acts as a sustained note through several chords, and adds delicious dissonances throughout the verse.

In the instrumental break, pedal notes still abound, but this time they’re in the bass, and this bass pedal contributes a pleasantly airy effect to this section: Db Dbmaj7 Gb/Db Db It’s a perfect demonstration of the basic principle of “whatever you do to one section, find a different way of doing it in another.”

Formal Energy

The symmetrical form of “Eet” (material from the beginning reappearing at the end) is supported by the carefully controlled energy. Spektor uses octave displacement of the melodic lines (“You spend half of your life..” versus “It was so easy..”) to help build energy, as well as instrumental backing and rhythmic pulse. She shows how easy it actually is to control the energy output of a song: add instruments and make them louder when you need to build energy, and reduce to simple piano accompaniment when you want it to dissipate. But without that fluctuation in energy, the song, I believe, would die.

One of the hallmarks of great writers is their ability to create something beautiful and engaging with very simple materials. “Eet” is a perfect example. In the balance between simplicity and complexity, simplicity will almost always win out.

The silver paths beneath me rise, they brighten and sustain;
and I, by measured stride, rejoin their whited old refrain.

I grew up in a household where the “adult” beverage was Pepsi.  I remember family parties – birthdays, holidays, what have you – as being extremely loud with lots of laughter, music, and games laced with our signature sarcasm.  Our greatest vice was second and third helpings of my grandmother’s home cooking.  The get-togethers were a constant staple growing up in Indiana since all the relatives lived within fifteen minutes of one another.   And when I became a teenager, my idea of fun was going to the Dairy Queen with the Brown Eyed Girls (Mandi, Cindy, and Rhonda) followed by a Portage High School football game or having friends over at Mandi’s house and ordering a Jay&Jay’s Stuffed Pizza, sitting around her dining room table, talking and laughing until our parents started demanding we come home because it was getting late.

I thought drinking was stupid and only the losers were into that sort of thing.  That,  and doing drugs.  During my senior year of high school, our Pom squad had a sleepover after the homecoming game and everyone – aside from myself and the McKiddy sisters – drank themselves into dumb stupidness.  I spent the entire evening taking care of obnoxious, bleary eyed, stumbling, slurring, vomiting, ridiculous girls.  Point made.

And then I moved to New York City, discovered a Long Island Iced Tea (which was NOT an “easy” drink because it had the word “tea” in it), and now I date a musician where every gig involves an after party of drinking.  Since when did it become a necessity to get drunk in order to be able to have a good time?  And even if you aren’t getting drunk, I just feel that there’s something messed up about having an alcoholic beverage every day.  Sounds basic, what I’m saying.  But I was beginning to become one of those “social” drinkers.  Only, in my life, there’s a lot of socializing going on.  Too much, if you add alcohol to the equation.

On October 7^th I came home and announced to my roommate that, for the next thirty days, I would refrain from drinking alcohol.  And later that evening I vowed to refrain from eating meat as well.  The reason for my declaration was simple: I felt out of shape, exhausted, stressed, moody, and anxious.

After rereading the first entry I posted in this blog I realized that I sounded like a whiny, pathetic, helpless victim.  If there’s one thing that I hate it’s when people act helpless.

My first mistake:  Singing the “Waa Waa Poor Me” song when I know better. Therefore, I deleted the entry.

I have come to learn that whenever the world becomes a crazy mess and everything seems to be going wrong, the first place to look is within.  That’s really all we can do.  As Martha Washington said, “I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.”

My second mistake: Finding solace in destroying myself from the inside out.

It’s not that I’m an alcoholic or enjoy basking in the radiance of steak three times a day with a midnight snack of Ben & Jerry’s.  But, once upon a time not too long ago, I tried my hand at the vegan lifestyle thanks to the influence of my boyfriend’s roommate (who, ironically, has begun incorporating meat back into his diet as of yesterday).  I must admit, I had more energy, slept through the night, and generally felt great during that period.  I fell off the wagon during my fourth month when I began to feel dizzy and realized that I wasn’t preparing enough food for myself.  It’s true – when you eat healthy, you need to eat more often.  And I wasn’t taking the time to make sure that I was getting the proper nutrition.  Were it not for my boyfriend, the concept of taking a multi-vitamin would have eluded me since there was no time for that in my crazy go-go-go! life.

But, that was then, my trial phase.  That was seven months ago.  I’ve decided I’m going to get back on that wagon once more with a 30-day detox session to jump-start the do over process.  And in all honesty, I’m sure I won’t give up alcohol for good.  It’s all about reprogramming the mind to embrace a balanced lifestyle.

As of 2:41 am I am entering the 6^th day.

refrain- to chose not to do something

restrain- to immobilize

If you want to say that you decided not to do something then you “refrained” from doing it; or saying it.

But if you want to express a physical action that stopped someone or something else from doing something you want to say you “restrained” it.

• The confusion comes in when people say they had to “restrain” themselves from doing something- this is accurate because you had to physically prevent yourself from doing it. With “restrain” there must always be an object and “myself” or “yourself” does apply.

I refrained from telling her she was wrong even though she was. (decided not to)

I had to restrain myself from walking in to the bakery for more pie. (“myself” is the object)

The chorus of a song helps to complete what the verse begins, lyrically, melodically and harmonically. And for many songwriters, beginning with the chorus, from which the title is usually extracted, is the norm. But songs without chorus, like “Bridge Over Troubled Water” (which uses a refrain), require you to keep your eye on the way the harmonies progress.

A song represents a type of harmonic journey which starts in a home key, moves away from it, and eventually returns. In the simplest 3-chord songs, you see this journey very clearly: The I-chord is home, the IV-chord is “away” (albeit close-by), the V-chord is poised at your doorstep, and then we get the return of the I-chord.

This little I – IV – V – I journey can be thought of in another way, in terms of harmonic tension: as you move away from the I-chord, you increase harmonic tension, and as you move back to the I-chord, the tension is resolved.

For many songs, the verse alone presents this journey as a complete package, harmonically speaking, before the chorus is ever reached. In other words, most verses will travel the I – IV – V – I route, and resolve its harmonic tension before reaching the chorus. So why then does it need a chorus? It’s because what is usually needing more development and resolution is the lyrical content and the melody.

Most choruses expand on the lyric in important ways, telling the listener how the singer feels. And most choruses will take that verse melody, and complete it with a more energetic melodic partner. In songs with choruses, the chorus exists to give resolution to lyric and melody. And in songs where the verse ends on any chord except the I-chord (usually the V-chord), the chorus also gives resolution to the harmony; it needs to get back to the I-chord eventually.

Which leads us (finally!) to our topic: what do we do about songs without a chorus? The two most common song forms that do not use a chorus are the verse-refrain format, and the continuous verse (AAA..) format.

If a song has a refrain, like “Bridge over Troubled Water,” you need to think of the refrain as a short, one-line chorus. The best way to approach a refrain is to ensure that the verse leading into it does not conclude harmonically. In other words, a verse in such a song needs to end on anything except the I-chord. If a verse ends on a I-chord, a refrain is not usually long enough to have the chance to present a new harmonic journey to the listener. Refrains are too short for that.

If the song is a continuous series of verses, then the verse needs to resolve harmonically. It needs to begin and end on the I-chord. But if you’re looking for a way to prevent boredom, try thinking of your verse in two parts, in two longish musical phrases, and see if you can work the following ideas into your verse:

1. Allow the harmonies of your first phrase to need more; in other words, have the first 8 bars end on the V-chord, or some other chord other than the I-chord.
2. Start the second phrase on something other than the I-chord. A vi-chord is a great replacement for a I, but the IV-chord is also a good choice. Then starting on that chord, bring the harmonies eventually back to I.
3. Allow the melody of the first phrase to move upward, and use the second phrase to resolve it downward again.
4. Have the first half of your lyric present thoughts and ideas that need to be resolved in the second half.

Amanda McBloom’s “The Rose”, made most famous by Bette Midler, is a great example of a verse-only song. The second half of the melodystarts on a Imaj7 chord, offering a beautiful dissonance that needs resolution. The melody winds its way upward, creating a tension that resolves by downward toward the end.

The verse-only format, as well as the verse-refrain plan, offer really interesting alternatives to the verse-chorus design. But no matter which you choose, the job is always to present musical elements that need resolution, and then… resolve them. That process of tension-release is what keeps listeners hooked on y our song.

One by one, employees learn what they need to know and develop areas of expertise that are called on when needed to perform a certain job. However, there are occasions in which somebody in an organization requires special expertise but doesn’t know how to find it within the company. When this occurs, the company may waste time and money by “reinventing the wheel,” developing expertise that already exists (if they only knew where to find it). In other cases, if the necessary expertise is not tapped or new expertise is not developed, then either something will get done improperly or it will not get done at all.

Acknowledging this situation, in recent years many companies have instituted what is known as knowledgement management programs. Knowledge management is defined as the process of gathering, organizing, and sharing a company’s information and knowledge assets. Typically, knowledgement programs involve using technology to establish repository databases and retreival systems. These are ways of using computers to sort through and identify the areas of expertise represented in the company—that is, its intellectual capital. But don’t misunderstand: Knowledgement relies on human skills for success. Computers merely organize what those skills are and where in the company they may be found. One-third of all companies and 80 percent of large multinational enterprises already have a knowledge management system in place, and most others expect to implement in the near future.

It’s important to note that simply having a knowledge management program does not ensure success. Employees also must use it, but too often they don’t. this is called knowing-doing gap—the tendency for employees to refrain from using the knowledge that’s available to them in the company, leading to poor performance. Although there are many possible reasons for not using a knowledge management system, the most dominant is the tendency for employees to be afraid of expressing their ideas (for fear of giving people in other parts of the company an advantage over them) or of seeking ideas from others (for fear of admitting that they don’t know something). Obviously, for knowledgement to be effective people in the company have to be willing to both donate and receive information. To ensure that their company’s knowledge resources are put to use, execuitives put various incentives in place to encourage the company’s many experts to add their expertise to the database and to encourage employees to use others’ expertise contained in the database. Given the success of the company’s system, it’s apparent that the knowing-doing gap may not be found in the company. In fact, on the heels of its success, similar systems need to be introduced in the company’s sales reps and its research and development unit.

Arrogance

Arrogance. I don’t think there is much that gets under my skin more than this. I’ve recently run across it and I had to step out of the situation to keep my tongue under control. It was hard to refrain myself from saying what I really would have liked to. I won’t say it here, either, in my own little corner of the world.

It would be wise for the arrogant to remember that pride cometh before a fall, and a swift kick between the legs.

It would also be wise for me to remember:
Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.

Irony

I find it extremely ironic to be told that I am delusional for believing in God and the Holy Bible, when the said informant believes in a continuing cycle of reincarnation until she is made ‘perfect in love’. I guess each to his own delusions.

Left Behind?

Will a Christian who is found arguing with an atheist when the Rapture takes place be left behind?  No, but it isn’t prudent to be ‘casting your pearls before swine’.

The original poser of the question (an atheist) should be more concerned about his own final destination for eternity.

Women remain silent in the church = Hold Thy Peace

1Timothy 2:11-12

11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

A woman is told to learn in silence, being peaceable, tranquil, and quiet with all subjection or obedience, submitting as in the ranks under a commander or have a willingness to give into another person’s leadership.

1Co 14:35

14 And if they (women) will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

The word “shame” here denotes that a woman speaking in the church is dishonorable, base, and filthy, and doing this is a disgrace to her. She is told in this Scripture to not speak, meaning not to preach, not to use words to disclose her thoughts or her mind in the church assembly, like a preacher at the pulpit would speak a sermon. She is specifically told not to do this.

 Tamar was told by her brother, Absalom, to remain silent about what their brother, Amnon, did to her.

2Sa 13:20

And Absalom her brother said unto her, Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee? but hold now thy peace, my sister: he is thy brother; regard * not this thing. So Tamar remained desolate in her brother Absalom’s house.

For those of you who do not know, her own brother raped his sister, Tamar, who was the daughter of David. She was a princess, being prepared to become a queen someday. She was clothed with a coat of many colors showing the promise or covenant that was given to her. When this happened, what was rightfully hers to obtain was shattered for the rest of her earthly life. All was lost and the promise of such a position of honor could never be obtained by her. No inheritance and no throne would be hers from that day forward because of her own brother’s defilement of her virginity and virtues, though this unforeseen crime against her was brought upon her by no fault of her own.

 Before you, as a woman, become upset by being commanded to hold your peace or refrain your tongue, it would be helpful to consider why the Bible tells women to do this in the first place. Also, as a reader of this book, you will learn that women, in general, must hold true to this law, but, there have been notable exceptions to this rule, and for needful reasons. To put this command in the proper perspective, one has to recognize that the first “woman”, Eve, did not listen to God and did not go to Adam, her husband, for his opinion, thought, or counsel concerning the serpent’s words resounding in her ears. Since the two walked side by side as one, this would have been the wise action to take.

 The position of God, in authority above Eve, was a male role, as the Father, and Adam, as her husband. When Sarah called Abraham, her lord, she gave him utmost respect declaring him to be her husband. One of the names for the Lord is Adonai, meaning “Husband”. We, as his bride, call Jesus, our Lord, the Husbandman, and we are partaking of the wedding feast at the Marriage Supper of the Lamb to be united to Him, no one else.

 Eve was given to her husband, Adam, and came out of his side to be his helpmate, not vice versa. The word “helpmate” is just that, she was to be the helper to her mate or in an assisting role to her husband’s every need, want, and desire in holiness. However, before the fall, there was no indication that Adam was above Eve in authority, as such. But, after the fall, because she did what she did, God made it be that “her desire” would be “toward” her husband and she would have “pain” during childbirth. Clearly, at this point, God was placing Adam as her head and she in the supportive or subordinating role to his leadership.

 To keep the types shown in the Bible of husband and wife, the Word puts the woman in subjection and submission to the man, the Word, the husband. The church, as the wife of Jehovah, receives His Word, as the Seed of Life, much like a woman will accept the seed of her husband to give birth to a child. He is birthed inside of the soul of each person after accepting Him into the heart. Then, His Holy Spirit is invited to reside there within the person welcoming His presence and love into their very being.

 When these passages talk about forbidding a woman to “teach” or “usurp authority over a man” it is directly referring to teaching or preaching the Word of God in a congregational setting. The use of the term “preacher” or “teacher” to label a woman, as fulfilling a role in the five fold ministry of the church, would not be appropriate according to these Scriptures. These statements do not apply to a woman being a Sunday school teacher to teach children or being an elder woman or mature lady of the Word sharing or teaching the younger women or less seasoned female followers of the Scriptures in the ways of the Lord. The well respected doctor, psychologist, author, and talk show host, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, www.drlaura.com , who advises and helps a multitude of men and woman with Biblical principals in everyday challenges within close relationships in life, does not fall in the category of this type of teaching or usurping authority over a man. She does not claim to be a “teacher” or “preacher” of the Word of God opening the Scripture to the congregation of people, as in the church body at large.

 Basically, it is clear that a woman is not to have authority, a position, or an office in the church to reside over the people as an official pastor (shepherd), teacher, or prophet of the church. Truly, these roles are found within the true church of the living God, but in their subordinate and supportive roles with respect to their husbands who hold the male office in the church. Moses was a shepherd and his wife, Zipporah, a shepherdess; as was Jacob, a shepherd, and Rachel, a shepherdess. Isaiah was a prophet, and the prophetess who gave birth to the male child in Isaiah 8 is said to be his wife.
