Here are materials from the guest lecture I gave on RefWorks for INLS 461-001. Along with the normal how-tos, I tried to talk about some frequently asked questions I get from patrons regarding Refworks. Kudos to Lisa Speaker for sending me teaching materials that I adapted for this lecture:

Installing Write-n-Cite on a Mac: Sometimes I assist Mac users, which can be tricky since I use a PC at work – screenshots from my desktop aren’t terribly helpful in their case! This tutorial on installing Write-n-Cite from ASU has been useful to me since it includes Mac screenshots. Of course, one would replace ASU’s proxy info with UNC’s (http://libproxy.lib.unc.edu/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/).

Es una gran alegría comunicarles que la Biblioteca, a través de COBIMET, ha adquirido la aplicación RefWorks disponible para toda nuestra comunidad: estudiantes, profesores y personal administrativo.  Con RefWorks puedes crear tu propia lista de referencia, adjuntar los documentos a la ficha bibliográfica e ir añadiéndolas a tu escrito según la 6ta edición del Manual de Estilo APA, entre otras opciones.  Para abrir tu cuenta sólo tienes que pasar por la Biblioteca para adquirir el nombre de usuario institucional.  De esta forma, tienes la opción de guardar tus documentos de investigación lejos de tu disco duro y que puedes acceder desde cualquier computadora con acceso a la Internet.  Más adelante estaremos publicando tutoriales para que se relacionen más con esta herramienta útil para todo/a investigador/a.  A continuación guía y video introductorio… RefWorks_Quick_Start_Guide_Spanish

Elaborei este guia para orientar, de alguma forma, quem pressente que pode tirar partido da Internet mas não sabe exactamente como. Este facto não é de estranhar, dada a variedade de escolha e de possibilidades que surgem continuamente. Mesmo os gestores de referências bibliográficas clássicos já renovaram modos de pesquisa e funcionalidades, de forma que quem tenha feito investigação há uns anos atrás tem de fazer uma reciclagem.

A selecção é questionável, aliás como qualquer selecção, por isso desafio aqueles que conhecem e usam outras aplicações que lhes são muito úteis a deixarem o relato e a darem o seu testemunho. Terei todo o gosto em incluir essas sugestões em próxima revisão deste guia.

Refworks es un programa gestor de bibliografías, que permite crear una base de datos personal con referencias introducidas manualmente o procedentes de búsquedas en bases de datos, catálogos o revistas electrónicas. Puede usar estas referencias para insertar citas y bibliografías en trabajos académicos y de investigación, con el estilo de cita adecuado.

RefWorks está disponible para todos los miembros de la Comunidad Universitaria (profesores, alumnos y PAS)

The direct export from EBSCOHost to RefWorks is working again!  Please let us know if you have troubles with the service in the future.

At the moment, we can’t save references directly to RefWorks from EBSCO databases (Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier etc.).

Here’s another way to do it until the problem is solved:

1. Conduct a search.
2. Click on the Add to folder icon for each of the results you want to save.
3. Click on the Folder icon in the upper right-hand corner.
4. Re-select the references to export.
5. Click on the Export icon.
6. Click the radio button in front of Generic bibliographic management software.
7. Click Save.
8.  From the File menu select Save As.
9. Select the location where you want to save the file, type the name you want and select Text as the Save As Type.
10. Log in to RefWorks.
11. Select References > Import from the toolbar.
12. Select EBSCOhost in the Import Filter/Data Source field.  Select the database you were using (Academic Search Premier, Business Source Premier etc.) in the Database field.
13. Click on Browse to find the text file you saved to your computer.
14. Click Import.
15. Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.

Are you a RefWorks user?  If so,  the Direct Export option from EBSCOHost is currently not working.  The problem is being worked on and it should be fixed by Friday, November 13th.

You can still export your citations into RefWorks, but you will need to use the manual export option.

1. From the EBSCOHost Export page, select: Generic bibliographic management software
2. Click Save.
3. The next screen will have a bunch of information listed about the article.  Right click on your mouse, and select “Save As…”
4. Save the page to your desktop (or where ever it is easy to find).
5. Log into RefWorks.
6. In your RefWorks account, click on References in the toolbar.
7. Select Import
8. Make sure Import Filter/Data Source is set to University of La Verne.
9. Select the database you are exporting from
10. Select the folder you would like to import the citations into, if you use folders.
11. Then Browse for the file you just saved and attach it
12. Finally, click Import at the bottom of the page.

Voila!  You have now imported the citations manually!

We will also be delivering a presentation on Zotero. Zotero is a free, open source alternative to RefWorks. While its still in development and not as well established as RefWorks, it is in many ways easier to use and offers some great new features for researchers. The presentation will cover:
-a demonstration of Zotero’s key features
-comparing Zotero with RefWorks and Mendeley, another rival reference management app.

RefWorks experienced a further brief loss of service on 5 November (following the earlier reported outage on 3 November). eServices has been in contact with RefWorks support in Germany and the US, and provided debugging information about NTU’s loss of connectivity. If you experience any future loss of access to the service during the remainder of 2009, please contact Lib eServices with details of the date and time when connection to the service was unavailable.

RefWorks access in DCU is down intermittently at the moment. You may get this error message when trying to access it:

The requested URL could not be retrieved

We are working with RefWorks to resolve this and will update this post with news about it.

RefWorks has confirmed that access to the service has been fully restored following yesterday afternoon’s outage. RefWorks “apologize for the inconvenience and want you to know that we are taking steps to make sure that this does not happen again.”

If you continue to experience any problems accessing RefWorks, please contact the eServices team with full details of the issue.

The RefWorks service is currently unavailable due to technical problems affecting the RefWorks servers. It is not possible to access the service from either on-campus or off-campus.

eServices is in contact with RefWorks support team and a further update will follow once access has been restored.
