My strength and flexibility are definitely starting to improve, but during stretches and in Yoga class, I can definitely feel the scar tissue–or what I assume to be the scar tissue–limiting my range of motion. It feels like a tight band that does not want to stretch out or let go. The sensation is definitely different from trying to stretch out a muscle that is merely tight. There is greater resistance. Let’s hope that time–and rehabilitation–does heal all wounds.

Studies show that degenerative disc disease afflicts approximately thirty percent of the patients in

Studies show that degenerative disc disease afflicts approximately thirty percent of the patients in our society between the ages of 30 to 50 years old. In general, the bones that make up the spine might start to degenerate for a number of reasons. This condition is called degenerative disc disease. Thus, when the discs degenerate, they start to become closer to each other. For this and many other reasons this can create pain and discomfort and is primaryily focused in the lower back area. Keep in mind that chiropractors are using massage chairs to loosen up the muscles of the lower back region and to give relief from the discomfort.

Why does the discomfort result? So let’s take look at the structure of the spinal column; the spinal column is a vertical row of small round bones that are interlinked. Because they are interlocked the spine has the capability to flex and/or bend and down the middle of these bones or discs of spinal column runs the spinal cord.

So in the middle of the spine runs the spinal cord and the spinal cord connects the nerves of the brain to the rest of the body. Bear in mind that the bones of the spine protect the spinal cord and gives our spinal column the flexibility that we enjoy. More or less so, the structure of the spine consists of bones and between the bones are soft jellied discs. What’s more, these soft jelled discs provide a shock absorbing operation to keep these bones separate from one another.

Surely, there are a number of activities such as natural wear and tear, aging and misuse such as smoking can produce degenerative changes to the spinal column. The interlinked discs are one component that can be susceptible to degeneration. For this and many other reasons the challenge is to detect these biochemical and structural changes early on for treatment since these changes may develop long before detection using direct visible imaging may be utilized.

So, there are various possible causes that can produce the soft jellied discs to deteriorate. Just lately, massage chair therapy is becoming a prominent all-natural treatment to both elongate the soft jellied discs to help to recover range of motion and flexibility but also for relief of the discomfort with the problem. Frequently, spinal adjustments are also demanded to rebalance the spinal column and correct its alignment. In effect, this combined with massage chair treatments assist to restore the vertabrae.

People with degenerative disc disease experience stiffness, tightness and typically a sharp pain in the lower back region. Imagine the spine as a chain where it is purely as strong as the weakest link. Sadly, within the spinal column, the weakest link also many a time carries most of your weight due to misalignment of the vertabrae. In general, this puts additional strain on the soft gel-like discs areas which causes them to breakdown over time.

In effect, the hope of the massage chair is two fold; Consequently, there are therapeutics for stretching the muscles to recover mobility and flexibility and to decrease the muscle to relieve pain. For pain and discomfort relief, chopping massages are utilized to relieve pressure on the spine by loosening the major back muscles.

Just remember that chopping massage chair therapies are also done where the shoulder and upper back muscles are targeted. More or less so, a quick chopping motion is used to loosen the large-scale muscles of the back and shoulders. This helps improve blood flow and to release tension that has built up over time. Because of this, these muscles must absorb any stress from the spinal column which is unbalanced; so when degeneration develops, these back muscles are also distressed. Not only that, the release of the tension from these regions also helps to restore the balance with the spine.

That is why, massage chairs administer a kneading massage therapy to relax the larger back muscles. Essentially, the area of massage is set and the massage chairs will knead the back muscles in this area. Certainly, the speed of the kneading can be changed to loosen and reduce these the major back muscle regions.

Sadly, degenerative discs disease has multiple causes and also various therapeutics to recover the health of the spinal column. Furthermore, massage chairs have been verified to be a reliable, consistent and convenient approach to ease pain and to help restore mobility and flexibility to the soft tissues and muscles of the back and shoulders. Without doubt you should seek the advice of your physician to know what is right for your circumstance and talk about your thoughts concerning the treatments that may be provided by a massage chairs for back pain relief.

Finally, if you suffer from low back pain then a massage chair can be the appropriate option. So, the great convenience of massage chairs makes it worthwhile. Can you think of merely sitting in a massage chair at home, letting the massage chair loosen those stressed back muscles by just hitting a button. Massage chair therapy may assist you to get the relief you wish for.

I want to tell about a special thing I did.

But first I have to tell about two other things.

The first other thing is very exciting. Because I think my Hannukah candle worked for shelter dogs! [A Hannukah Candle for Disabled Animals.] Because Snappy, Clancy and Twinkle are not on their shelter website any more. So I think they found a new home!

The second thing is a little bit sad. But it’s a little bit good too. And please check the link under Breaking News, in the sidebar, for information about the Dixon puppies rescued from a pet store charged with animal cruelty. The Solano County SPCA needs your help to care for more than 83 very young and sick puppies!

Those are my two other things. And now I can tell about my special thing that I did.

Because on one day it was very windy and very very cold. And we didn’t want to go outside. Even me. I didn’t want to go. Because I love to go outside. I love to play. And I love to run. Usually I do. But not that day.

Because the wind was making things go banging and crashing . And everything kept falling down. And falling over. And flying around. And that makes me very scared. Because that’s the way it was where I was before. Before I went to the shelter. And at the shelter too. A little bit. So I didn’t want to go outside too.

But then we went to a place I never went before. It’s called a yarn store. And it is in Rocklin. That’s not Sacramento. And it’s not Davis too. But it’s still California I think. Rocklin is if you go on the freeway and don’t go to Davis.

And it was very fun. It’s called Filati’s. And here it is.

My Best Friend has been to Filati’s before. And here is the Filati’s lady telling somebody all about my Best Friend. Because she really likes him. And I do too. And she is called the owner of Filati’s.

There was other people there too.

And here is me at Filati’s too!

My Kind Friend really liked the blue yarn this lady was buying.

Filati’s has very very much yarns. And it’s as bigger as my other stores I like to go. Like Outdoor Davis. And Newsbeat. Because it might be the same big as the Avid Reader in Davis. Except the Avid Reader has upstairs too. [Halloween, Horses & A Donkey.] Because there’s no upstairs at Filati’s.

But there is lots of different things there. Here is some of them. There’s bags.

But most of what is there is yarn. Lots and lots of yarn. And it’s all different colors at Filati’s. And up high. Everywhere! Here is some of the yarn we saw there.

Yarn is colored string. Sometimes it is round. Like a ball for playing. Like my tennis balls!

But it’s not always a ball. Like the yarn above here. Because sometimes you have to make it be a ball. And that’s here in this photograph. The Filati’s lady is making the yarn be a ball. So the other lady can take it home and make something.

And there’s other things there too. Things for doing special things with the yarn. Because you can knit with the yarn. And you can crochet too. I think crochet has some holes in it. But I don’t know why. And there’s needles. And crochet hooks. Because you need them to make the bigger pieces from the yarn strings.

But you might need some books to show you. Some special books are called patterns. And this is them.

And a pattern tells how to makes things you might like to have. Like a scarf. A scarf is a big piece of string. And you can put it around you to keep warm. You make it by doing knit or crochet. And you use lots of yarn strings to do it. Here are some scarves like that at Filati’s. People made them.

And here is a fat blue scarf.

Or you could make a cardigan like this one for a big person.

These are some other cardigans for big people.

Or if you want to make a cardigan for some children, here is one you could make.

You can even make socks! Here are some nice socks the people made at Filati’s.

Because if you want to make some socks like this here is some sock yarn.

But if you don’t know what to make with the yarns. Or if you don’t know how to do it. You can talk to the ladies at Filati’s. And they can tell you about it. Or show you. Like here.

The ladies who work at Filati’s are very nice. And they have treats there for dogs. I don’t know if they have treats for people. But they gave me and my Best Friend some treats too. Except my Best Friend ate all my treats. He always does that. But I don’t mind. Because he is my very Best Friend.

And I met some other nice people there too. A lot of nice people talked to me there. Some people talked to me a long time. And one nice person was a nice boy. He was from Nevada. That’s not in Sacramento or Davis.

He talked to me for a long time. Because sometimes me and my Best Friend just had to wait. Because my Kind Friend was looking at yarns.

And my friend from Nevada called me to come to him. Sammy, Come. He said to me. And I did come up to him. And then he stroked me. I used to couldn’t do that. Because I was too afraid. But I am learning about that. How I can let people touch me and it will be all right. And I did that it at Filati’s. And I was very glad. I like to be friends with people now. Some people. Some other people still frighten me. A little bit. Sometimes. Specially men. But I liked that boy very much. I wish he was my neighbor in Elmhurst instead of in Nevada.

But I wasn’t frightened at Filati’s. Even when I grabbed a ball of yarn. Because it looked like a ball. And I like to play ball. [A Ball is to Play!, Play Ball] So I grabbed it to play. And my Kind Friend said having me at Filati’s with all the balls of yarn was like having a fox amongst the chickens. I don’t understand that. Because I don’t know foxes. And I don’t know chickens too. But I don’t mind. There’s lots of things I don’t understand yet.

Because when I did that. Everybody laughed. And nobody got mad. Like it used to be. Where I was before I was at the shelter. Where I was so afraid. And hurting.

Because the lady who is the owner of Filati’s. She used to have a dog. And that dog was a retrieving dog. Like me and my Best Friend. Except it was a girl dog. And when that girl dog came to the yarn store with her owner, she used to retrieve all the balls of yarn off the racks and shelves and bring them to her owner. So then that silly girl couldn’t come to work at Filati’s any more because of being naughty with the yarn.

I like Filati’s very much. And you might like it too. If you like yarns and knitting and crocheting and dogs and nice ladies. I think you will like it too. So you should go there. And it’s online too if you can’t go to Rocklin.

The spinal cord is one of the most complex parts of the human body. When the cord is severed or injured, the body is thrown into a state of upheaval that requires long term recovery. A spinal cord injury can be caused by trauma or a disease to the vertebral column (spine) or to the spinal cord itself. Your level of injury is classified by which vertebra is damaged.

There are numerous explanations about spinal cord injuries published on the internet or in books, so I don’t want to go into detail explaining how the spinal cord works. The important thing to know is how to deal with all the crazy things your body can and cannot do at this point in your recovery. Remember, the part of your body above your injury and the part below your injury is perfectly fine. The problem is that the two cannot communicate (send nerve signals) through the scarring around your injury or through your injury itself. Therefore, until your body is able to send those signals again, you need to take meticulous care of yourself.

It’s important to seek information on how to take care of your body and its unique health issues, how to develop an effective rehabilitation program, useful equipment, and some stories about other inspiring people to keep you motivated. These are all things I’d love to talk about if you contact me on our website www.determined2heal.org.

The most important thing for you to remember is that there is always hope. Every injury is different, and therefore no doctor can tell you definitively what you will and will not be able to do. Hope is the drug that will keep you on the path to recovery.

Besides walking, most of my rehabilitating has been done on the Yoga mat, on our living room rug and during my daily walks outside. Today, with 12 inches of snow on the ground, I decided to jump on a LifeCycle in our guest room. I put in 25 minutes at low resistance and disliked it immensely. Elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, rowing machines–all boring. I want to play tennis, practice yoga or Aikido, or ride a bicycle outside so I can climb real hills and feel the wind.

I made it through my ride, by want to get back to my favorite forms of rehabbing. Bitch over.

I did something quite unusual last night — I went Christmas shopping by myself at a much slowe

I did something quite unusual last night — I went Christmas shopping by myself at a much slower pace than usual. I didn’t manage to buy everything I set out to, but I got everything I could, and I got through the experience in one coherent piece — and I was able to get my nap after I got back.

Normally, this time of year is marked by team-shopping with my spouse. They contact everyone in the family and find out what people want… or we talk about what we think people want, and then they make up the list. We take the list, hop in the car, and head out to stores that look like good candidates, then we slog through the process of elimination, muddling our way through… with me getting so fried I either completely shut down and become non-communicative, or I melt down and fly off the handle over every little thing.

We usually spend several evenings like this, ’round about this time of year, and we’ve both come to dread it a little. My meltdowns had become more extreme over the past few years, and this year we were both really dreading the whole Christmas shopping business — to the point where we are going to be late(!) with presents for family members in other states. That’s never happened before. We were always good about it. But my meltdowns screwed everything up.

We both recognize that doing a lot of social things, this time of year (when work is actually getting more crazy, what with year-end and all), takes a huge toll on me. Even if it’s with friends (especially with friends), all the activity, all the interaction, all the excitement, really cuts into my available energy reserves. And then I get turned around and anxious… and I either regress to a cranky 9-year-old state, whining and bitching and slamming things around… or I melt down, start yelling, freak out over every little thing, and start picking at my spouse over things they say and do, to the point where neither of us can move without me losing it.

What a pain in the ass it is. Of all things, the uncontrollable weeping bothers me the most. The yelling bothers my spouse. It’s embarrassing for me and frightening for them, and neither of us has a very Merry Christmas, when all is said and done.

So, this year we did things differently.

We split up for the day and took care of our respective activities.

My spouse went to a holiday party that was thrown by a colleague of theirs who’s married to an attorney who deals with financial matters. I was invited, too, but we both realized that it would be pretty dumb for me to try to wade into the midst of 50+ actuaries and tax attorneys and their spouses who were invited to the shindig… and try to hold my own. Certainly, I can keep up with the best of them, but marinating in such a heady soup, especially with everyone hopped up on holiday cheer (eggnog, red wine, punch, etc.) and all animated and such, would have been a recipe for disaster.

So, I didn’t go. Instead, I took our shopping list and headed to the mall to stock up on what our families had requested. We had written down in advance all the names and the specific gifts we were going to get, and we had also written down where we were going to get them. That list was my lifeline. Especially in the rush and press of the mall, which sprawls out in all directions, with satellite stores on either end.

I’m happy to report that I actually did really well. I made a few tactical errors — like not parking in the first lot I came to and walking in. But that turned out okay, because if I had parked in the first lot, it would have been all but impossible to get down to the other end of the mall. I studied the list carefully ahead of time and used a highlighter to mark the stores where I’d be going. I also kept my focus trained on the task at hand — even if it was just sitting in traffic. I also walked a lot more this year than other years. I found one parking space and used it for two different stores. And I didn’t hassle with finding a space that was as close as I could get to the building. I took the first decent spot I could find, and then I walked to the store.

Imagine that — in past years, I was possessed with finding parking as close as possible, and I would move the car between stores, even if they were only 500 yards apart. This year, I just walked the distance. Even though it was cold, for some reason the cold didn’t bother me, and it actually felt good to be out and moving.

I think that my 5 months of daily exercise has paid off, in this respect. I think part of the reason I was always consumed with driving everywhere was that I just wasn’t physically hardy. I was kind of a wimpy weakling, in fact — though more in thought than in body, but a wimply weakling, all the same. But having a good physical foundation — even just from doing an hour (total) of cycling, stretching, and light lifting each morning — has made a significant difference in my willingness and ability to walk between stores.

It might not seem like much, but the walking (instead of driving) between stores part of the trip actually made a huge difference in my overall experience. Walking between stores — stopping at the car on the way to stash my presents — helped me break up the activity and clear my head. It got me out of that in-store madness, the crush and the rush, and it got me moving, so I felt less backed-up and agitated. And that let me start fresh at the next store.

That was good, because the first store was a friggin’ nightmare. It was one of those big-box electronics places, that supposedly has “everything” but really didn’t. It was exhausting, combing through the stacks of movies and music, only to find everything except what I needed. The lighting was awful — extremely bright and fluorescent and glaring. People kept bumping into me, or walking so close I thought they would run me down. But the worst thing was the acoustics. Everything surface was hard and echo-y and the place was overwhelmingly loud, and every single sound was at least partially distinguishable, which drove me nuts. I’ve noticed that acoustics have a lot more impact on me than light, when I’m out shopping. The store was one big cauldron of loud, indiscriminate noise, and my brain kept trying to follow every sound to see if it mattered. I couldn’t function there. Not with the place full of people — and very agitated, anxious, aggressive people, at that.

I eventually went with a gift card and got the hell out of there. I doubt I’ll ever go back when it’s that full. When the place is low-key and all but empty, I can handle it much better. But at this time of year? Not so much.

Walking back to my car chilled me out. Sweet relief.

At the second store — a bookstore — I started to feel pretty overwhelmed. They had long lines, and the place was packed — which is good for the retailer, but not so great for me. I spent the longest amount of time there, in part because I could feel I was getting overloaded, and I stopped a number of times to catch up with myself and remind myself what I was there to buy. My list was getting a little ragged, at that point, what with me writing notes in the margins and taking it out/putting it back in my pocket. So, eventually I just pulled it out and held onto it for dear life. I must have looked a little simple-minded, but I don’t care. Everyone else was so caught up in their own stuff, anyway. My main challenge there, was not getting trampled by Women On A Mission — many of them carrying large bags and shopping baskets that doubled as ramrods to get through the crowds.

One cool thing happened, though, when I was taking a break — I had a little exchange I had with two teenage boys who were talking about some book they’d heard about. I was just standing there, pretending to look at a shelf of books, just trying to get my bearings, when I hear this one young guy tell his buddy, “I heard about this book I should get — I think it’s called the ‘Kama Sutra’ and it’s, like, about sex, and it’s got these pictures… and it’s really old… like, from India or something.”

Well, I perked up at that, and suddenly very alert, I looked over at them and said, “Oh, yeah — the Kama Sutra, man… You should definitely check it out.”

They kind of looked at me like deer in headlights, and they got flushed and flustered and stammered something about not knowing how to find it. It was about sex, and they didn’t know how to ask someone to help them. I so felt their pain…

I confidently (and confidentially) pointed them to the book-finder computer kiosk, where they could type in the title and it would tell them where to find it in the store.

“Dude, you should totally look into it. It’s got lots of information — and pictures — and it’s been highly recommended… for hundreds of years.”

They got really excited and headed for the book-finder kiosk. Here’s hoping they — and their girlfriends — have a very Merry Christmas.

That little exchange got me back in the game, so I took another look at my list and managed to find the handful of books and music and calendars I wanted to get. I headed for the line and just chilled/zoned out. I didn’t get all tweaked about how long it was taking; I listened in on a conversation for a while, till I realized it was mostly about death and health problems people were having.

Oh – and another thing that helped me keep my act together, was the 4:15 p.m. alarm that I have set on my mobile phone. 4:15 is usually when I need to start wrapping up my day at work. I need to do a checkpoint on the work I’m doing, start to wind down, and begin keeping an eye on the clock, so I don’t get stuck in town past 6:00, which is what happens to me when I don’t watch my time after 3:30 or so. I have this alarm set to go off each day, and it went off while I was in the store, which was a blessing. I had completely lost track of time and I was starting to drift, the way I do, when I’m fatigued and overloaded and disoriented.

It startled me out of my fog, and I knew I still had a bunch of things on my list to get, so I refocused and started thinking about what I would get at the next store, so I could just march in and do my shopping without too much confusion and disorientation. After I paid for my books and music and calendar, I debated whether to have my presents wrapped for free, which might have saved me time in the long run. But I couldn’t bear the thought of having to interact with the folks who were doing the wrapping. They looked really friendly and gregarious — Danger Will Robinson! Warning! Warning! Even a friendly conversation was beyond me at that point.

I realized I just wasn’t up to that, and I must have looked like an idiot, standing there in the middle of the foyer, staring at the gift-wrappers for about 10 minutes, but who cares? Everyone was so caught up in their own stuff, they probably didn’t notice me. And if the gift-wrappers were uncomfortable with my staring, they didn’t show it… too much

Anyway, after I managed to extricate myself from that store, I headed for my last destination. Again, I didn’t sweat the traffic getting out of the lot, and when I got to the final store, I parked at a distance from the front doors and walked in through the icy cold, which was good — it cleared my head.

Inside, I consulted my list again and headed directly for the section that had what I needed. Halfway there, I remembered that I’d meant to buy a very important present at the first store, but I’d totally blanked on it. I started to freak out and got caught up in trying to figure out how to get back to that first store and not lose my mind in the process. Then, I slowed down and stopped catastrophizing, and in my calming mind, it occurred to me that — Oh, yeah – they probably carried that item at this store, so I went and checked, and sure enough, there it was – score! I didn’t have to back to big-box hell. At least, not that day.

I found some more of the presents on my list, and although I didn’t get everything I needed, I made a decent dent. My partner can come with me and help me sort out the other items either today or tomorrow. Or possibly when we get to our family — they usually have some last-minute shopping to do, and they can cart us around with them. And I won’t have to drive.

By the time I got home, I was bushed. My spouse wasn’t home yet, so I called them — they were on their way home and were stopping to pickup some supper. I said I was lying down for a nap, and they didn’t have to wake me when they got home. Then I took a hot shower to get the public germs off me, laid down, and listened to Belleruth Naparstek’s Stress Hardiness Optimization CD. I had a bit of trouble relaxing and getting down, but I did manage to get half an hour’s sleep in, before I woke up in time for dinner.

My partner had a pretty good time at the party, but they said it probably would have been a disaster for me — so many people, so much energy, so many strangers, and unfamiliar surroundings. I concurred, and I showed them what I’d bought that afternoon.

We’d both done well. We both missed each other terribly, but we did get through the afternoon without one of those terrible holiday incidents that has dogged us for many, many years. Like Thanksgiving, which went so well, this Christmas shopping trip actually felt normal. It didn’t have that old edginess that I always associate with holiday shopping. It didn’t have the constant adrenaline rush. In some respects, it feels strange and unfamiliar, but you know what? If strange and unfamiliar means level-headed and low-key and plain old sane, and it means I can keep my energy up and pace myself with proper planning… well, I can get used to that.

Yes, I’ve done things differently this year. And it’s good.

Considering Physical Therapy might be good for you for many reasons. Physical Therapy is not the sam

Considering Physical Therapy might be good for you for many reasons.

Physical Therapy is not the same as other forms of processes and in many ways it’s considered one of the best ways to get back to where you were before you were injured or had surgery.

Generally, people are unable to move like they were before the injury or surgery at all.

The objective of using physical therapy as an option to other forms of medical care is to supply corrective practices for your muscles and joints which can encourage increased mobility for joints, strengthen existing muscles, and decrease pain as well.

For this reason physical therapy is an absolutely good choice when it comes to treating mobility and sports injuries versus just taking pain medication or other types of pain management.

Thinking over all this will possibly assist patients to approach physical therapy more objectively when it comes to making a choice.

This is most likely why almost all people need physical therapy after surgery.

The majority of times physical therapy is not offered to a patient for a few months after surgery.

Maybe you have experienced an injury or maybe you are recuperating from a surgical procedure or maybe you have been living with a condition your whole life.

Surely if you are experiencing restraints to your capability to function and move normally then physical therapy can be a great benefit to you.

There are two very specific anatomical differences in females and males…well, there may be one

There are two very specific anatomical differences in females and males…well, there may be one more, but that is not what I am talking about! However when it comes to exercise, maintaining structural balance throughout these areas could mean the difference between undesirable pain, aesthetically displeasing features such as sagging breasts , a pooching belly and a “dowagers hump” and having the body you desire while avoiding injury!

The very things that exacerbate these differences, creating the issues that many women struggle with are going to be dependent upon the individual demands placed on the body. For example, forward head posture and rounded shoulders, along with their associated imbalances, can begin early on as women will adopt a slouching posture in an attempt to hide developing breasts. As well, later on in life, our lifestyles begin to influence repetitive movement patterns which lead to imbalances and the development of compensatory patterns. Over time this will lead to the development and/or susceptibility to injury and a decrease in functionality.

Our goal here is in creating an awareness to our differences and understanding the effects of these differences on our overall wellbeing.

As mentioned, forward head posture can be a result of several different factors and whether rounded shoulders came first or vise versa women are more susceptible to the structural imbalances and stresses placed on the body as a result of both.

In placing this into perspective lets first consider the fact that an average human head can weigh up to 11lbs or 8% of your body weight, and with every inch the head migrates forward that weight will increase by 100%. To get a better understanding of the impact this can have on you, just imagine hanging a 20lb. watermelon around your neck and begin to ask yourself if this could be the cause of any of your aches and pains? In addition, females possess 30-40% less cervical muscle mass then males!

As the upper quarter of the body falls into a forward head position, many of the component joints are taken to the extreme of a particular ROM in an attempt to maintain the three planes of horizontal reference with the eyes, ears and teeth. This is for a number of survival reasons some of which include (respiration, balance, mastication, vision, etc.). Over time, due to adaptive changes that occur in and around the joints, the joint cartilage and ligaments are overstretched resulting in compression, shearing and degeneration of the intervertebral discs. Antagonistic muscles groups can no longer balance the head and neck and the muscles become hyperactive and prone to dysfunction and pain.

First rib angle alterations are influenced by forward head posture and rounded shoulders and tend to be more prevalent in women as the manubreum of a female sternum sits one segment lower in females, placing the anterior and medial scalene muscles closer together. This steepened angle decreases the space of the pathway through the clavicle in which, the brachial plexus nerves, subclavian artery, vascular and lymph vessels all pass causing an entrapment of the brachial plexus nerves (nerves that feed the arm), known as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) . Some of the symptoms accompanied by TOS include; constant headaches, shoulder impingement, neck pain, tingling or numbness, muscle weakness, disturbance in equilibrium, interscapular pain and/or irritable trigger points.

In addition, persistent forward head posture (a.k.a hyperkyphotic posture) as well as improper shoulder girdle position, puts compressive loads upon the upper thoracic vertebrae at C7/T1. These compressive forces are a stress to the body and as a protective mechanism, the nervous system will respond by adding more tissue. This build up of tissue is called a “Dowagers Hump.” Aesthetically speaking ladies…not so good!

As mentioned forward head posture can lead to an increased rib angle and altered shoulder girdle position but it can also influence the position of the lumbar spine and lower extremities as the pelvis is a major posture control center on structures both above and below the pelvis.

Other major influences that effect the pelvic position in females are pregnancy and high heeled shoes. Pregnancy causes stretching of the abdominal musculature, shortening of the hip flexors, hyperextension in the knees and disrupts normal weight bearing relationships in the lumbar spine. While high heeled shoes are capable of the same, the entire kinetic chain must progressively compensate for every inch of heel height as once again, as a survival mechanism, the body will do whatever it needs to in order to maintain eyes, ears and teeth level with the horizon. Imagine, if the joints of the body were held rigid…this would mean that for a 2″ heel the body would lean forward 22.5 degrees and a 4″ heel would require the body to lean forward by 45 degrees!

I think it has been made pretty clear that it is bio-mechanically impossible to have an upper extremity imbalance without having a lower extremity imbalance and the effects of the types of exercise we are doing, our ergonomics at work, home and in the car must be evaluated prior to making any extreme decisions in surgically altering any part of your body. Whether you are considering plastic surgery for aesthetic purposes or are tired of being in pain and are resorting to the all too common “ectomy” my recommendation to you is consider this first.

As well, find a CHEK Practitioner in your area that is trained in the assessments that identify these common imbalances and get on a corrective exercise program! Begin improving your posture by getting all the muscles working synergistically, so that when the shoulder girdle is weighted down with the extra weight you can dissipate it through your rib cage, through your legs and into the ground not through your scalene muscles, neck and back!

A physical therapist can do quite a bit for you after examining your diseases and discussing your needs and wishes if you’re wondering what the answer is. As a rule, supplying specific professional physical therapy with an individual is the principal intention of a physical therapist. Physical therapists hone in on concerns that restrain an individuals’ capability to function and move usefully; a physical therapist is a skillful expert in the examination and medicine for musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, and cardiothoracic problems patients can have. A physical therapist is a person who looks into and analyzes an individual’s illness, then devises and implements treatments to encourage ideal health. More often than not, the professional assistance of a physical therapist is many a time mandatory before you can complete any physical therapy on your own; hence, a physical therapist is prepared to diagnose illnesses early.

The physical therapist is a state licensed qualified professional whose responsibilities are to implement indirect and direct care for a patient and to help rehabilitate normal body operations after injury, surgery, or for an ongoing malady. Basically, a licensed trained specialist who aids you to train or retrain the body to work correctly is many a time called a physical therapist. So, rendering physical therapy, providing physical therapy coaching and judgments to individuals is the fundamental responsibility of a physical therapist. Remembering the age of a patient when rendering care for a patient is an essential job of a physical therapist. A physical therapist receives individuals of all ages who are enduring medical conditions or post-surgical conditions requiring rehabilitation.

The majority of times, a physical therapist is described as someone who manages and works with patients who have disabilities which may be a result of an accident or diseases. Visualize a physical therapist as a partner on your journey to bringing back and keeping range of motion so you can function at your best The difference between physical therapists and personal trainers is that a physical therapist is equipped to return a body to a pre-injury state of well-being when it comes to muscles, joints, bones, internal organs, and your mind; a personal trainer is taught to encourage you to have the healthier body you wish for. Obviously, discovering improper muscle, joint, and bone range of motion and educating you about the right range of motion while correcting muscle imbalances and bringing back muscle strength is what a physical therapist is trained to do.

Not only that, a physical therapist will teach an individual based on an individual evaluation and provide them one-on-one exercises to carry out that key in on strength, imbalances, range of motion. Assisting patients in recovering their capability to execute the activities of day-to-day life is one of the most fundamental duties of a physical therapist. Helping individuals to rehabilitate and maintain the health and fitness of their body is the duty of a physical therapist. More or less so, locating, stopping, correcting, and alleviating a persons’ physical discomforts due to injury, surgery, illness, disease, disabilites, or birth defects is the duty of the physical therapist.

There is a serious amount of basic education needed to become a physical therapist. What’s more, the amount of education that is mandatory to be a physical therapist is the central reason for the shortage of physical therapists. Even today, a physical therapist is a fairly new healthcare profession. A physical therapist is extremely capably qualified to control many physical patient ailments. The road to become a physical therapist is hard due to the fact that they need to complete a procedure to become one and then still need years of experience to become an real expert. As a individual who has a graduated with a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited university, passed the physical therapy national board exam, and has become a health care provider licensed in the state where they practice a physical therapist is a absolutely specialized individual to work with. In nearly all occurrences, a physical therapist is part of referral team of medical professionals cooperating to assist people. Unfortunately, in the majority of situations, some doctors will tell you that you should just take pain medicine or sometimes even suggest anything other than physical therapy, you may find that seeing a physical therapist is enough to assist with your ailments.

Unfortunately, in the majority of situations, some doctors will tell you that you should just take pain medicine or sometimes even suggest anything other than physical therapy, you may find that seeing a physical therapist is enough to assist with your ailments.

That’s right. I bought the book and gave it to my Dad, because Thomas Sowell endorsed it. My Dad read this book and he loved it. I read the book and I loved it. And now my co-workers are borrowing it from me.

What’s it about? Well the author is a psychologist in a hospital that deals with a lot of criminals and victims of crime. So he gets to see the worldview of the “underclass” up close, and to understand how the policies of the compassionate secular left are really working at the street level. The theme of the book is that the left advances policies in order to feel good about themselves, even though the policies actually hurt the poor and vulnerable far more than they help them. And the solution of the elites is more of the same.

My favorite passage

The only bad thing about reading it online is that you miss one of the best quotes from the introduction. But I’ll type it out for you.

The disastrous pattern of human relationships that exists in the underclass is also becoming common higher up the social scale. With increasing frequency I am consulted by nurses, who for the most part come from and were themselves traditionally members of (at least after Florence Nightingale) the respectable lower middle class, who have illegitimate children by men who first abuse and then abandon them. This abuse and later abandonment is usually all too predictable from the man’s previous history and character; but the nurses who have been treated in this way say they refrained from making a judgment about him because it is wrong to make judgments. But if they do not make a judgment about the man with whom they are going to live and by whom they are going to have a child, about what are they ever going to make a judgment?

“It just didn’t work out,” they say, the “it” in question being the relationship that they conceive of having an existence independent of the two people who form it, and that exerts an influence on their on their lives rather like an astral projection. Life is fate.

This is something I run into myself. I think that young people today prefer moral relativists as mates, because they are afraid of being judged and rejected by people who are too serious about religion and morality. The problem is that if you choose someone who doesn’t take religion and morality seriously, then you can’t rely on them to behave morally and exercise spiritual leadership when raising children.

An excerpt

Here’s one of my favorite passages from “Tough Love”, in which he describes how easily he can detect whether a particular man has violent tendencies on sight, whereas female victims of domestic violence – and even the hospital nurses – cannot or will not recognize the signs.

All the more surprising is it to me, therefore, that the nurses perceive things differently. They do not see a man’s violence in his face, his gestures, his deportment, and his bodily adornments, even though they have the same experience of the patients as I. They hear the same stories, they see the same signs, but they do not make the same judgments. What’s more, they seem never to learn; for experience—like chance, in the famous dictum of Louis Pasteur—favors only the mind prepared. And when I guess at a glance that a man is an inveterate wife beater (I use the term “wife” loosely), they are appalled at the harshness of my judgment, even when it proves right once more.

This is not a matter of merely theoretical interest to the nurses, for many of them in their private lives have themselves been the compliant victims of violent men. For example, the lover of one of the senior nurses, an attractive and lively young woman, recently held her at gunpoint and threatened her with death, after having repeatedly blacked her eye during the previous months. I met him once when he came looking for her in the hospital: he was just the kind of ferocious young egotist to whom I would give a wide berth in the broadest daylight.

Why are the nurses so reluctant to come to the most inescapable of conclusions? Their training tells them, quite rightly, that it is their duty to care for everyone without regard for personal merit or deserts; but for them, there is no difference between suspending judgment for certain restricted purposes and making no judgment at all in any circumstances whatsoever. It is as if they were more afraid of passing an adverse verdict on someone than of getting a punch in the face—a likely enough consequence, incidentally, of their failure of discernment. Since it is scarcely possible to recognize a wife beater without inwardly condemning him, it is safer not to recognize him as one in the first place.

This failure of recognition is almost universal among my violently abused women patients, but its function for them is somewhat different from what it is for the nurses. The nurses need to retain a certain positive regard for their patients in order to do their job. But for the abused women, the failure to perceive in advance the violence of their chosen men serves to absolve them of all responsibility for whatever happens thereafter, allowing them to think of themselves as victims alone rather than the victims and accomplices they are. Moreover, it licenses them to obey their impulses and whims, allowing them to suppose that sexual attractiveness is the measure of all things and that prudence in the selection of a male companion is neither possible nor desirable.

Often, their imprudence would be laughable, were it not tragic: many times in my ward I’ve watched liaisons form between an abused female patient and an abusing male patient within half an hour of their striking up an acquaintance. By now, I can often predict the formation of such a liaison—and predict that it will as certainly end in violence as that the sun will rise tomorrow.

At first, of course, my female patients deny that the violence of their men was foreseeable. But when I ask them whether they think I would have recognized it in advance, the great majority—nine out of ten—reply, yes, of course. And when asked how they think I would have done so, they enumerate precisely the factors that would have led me to that conclusion. So their blindness is willful.

Go read the rest! This is pure wisdom. And by wisdom I mean an awareness and familiarity with the objective moral that binds human action.
