Sen. Ben Nelson’s, D-Neb., abandonment of his alleged “pro-life” commitment brought Harry Reid within reach of a Christmas Eve vote to approve a Senate version of Obamacare. When that happens, the political battles over the future of American medicine and especially the care of seniors will shift to the conference committee and then to the House.

Though many conservatives are demoralized, they should instead be gearing up to peel off enough votes from among the 220 who voted for Obamacare when it passed the lower chamber. If the 215 who voted “no” on the first round stay firm, only three Democrats need to be turned.

Those three are most likely going to be found among the 24 Democrats identified by the National Republican Congressional Committee’s Reverse the Vote campaign. (See reversethevote.org/dems.html) These are the two dozen Democrats judged most vulnerable on Nov. 2, 2010, because the beliefs of the voters in their districts do not square with their representatives’ support for the federal government’s takeover of health care. Thousands of small contributions have already flowed into a special fund to be divided among the eventual GOP nominees against these 24 constituent-ignoring liberals.

Even more money is needed of course, but much more than money as well, and that is where the Tea Party movement comes in.

When I joined WordPress and filled out the "About" section, I made the mistake of saying that this blog was all about food and everything related to food.  At that time, I didn’t think I would be talking about wine because I’m neither a wine lover nor a social drinker.  Oh sure, I’d have the occasional chilled glass of Sangria with my meals but that’s as far as I go.

Travelling to Niagara Falls last week with my brother, I thought about the mysteries and joys of ice wine as I absent-mindedly read the road signs announcing wineries in the region and their ice wine specialties.  Ice wine is popular in Quebec.   It’s also very expensive – the cheapest bottle available in any SAQ  outlet is about $26.00 (the SAQ is the Société des alcools – the province’s liquor commission).  That’s a slim-size bottle. 

But to keep an open mind, I decided this trip was a good time as any to find out all about ice wine.  At the hotel, a tour agent was taking reservations for their five-hour wine tour in Niagara-on-the-Lake.  It would include three sample tastings for each visit :  red, white and ice wine.

The tour took us to three wineries.  Their brochure said "experience three world class wineries" – Inniskillin Estates Winery, Pillitteri Estates Winery and the Reif Estates Winery.  The brochure also mentioned that while visiting the Pillitteri winery, we’d get a chance to go down to the "dungeons" and look at those famous aging barrels.

We had a charming and very knowledgeable tour guide.  She warmly welcomed us at the lobby, proudly showing off  the awards and citations received by Pillitteri (it has won more than 450 international and domestic medals).  They take pride in their ice wines and they also produce full bodied reds and whites as well as Shiraz.  It was here that I learned why ice wine fetches a steep price.

The VQA is Ontario’s wine watchdog.  The VQA seal means that the estate uses only the best quality grapes grown in the province; Niagara is blessed with a temperate climate and benefits from the glacial soils nurtured by the Great Lakes.  Canada’s wine industry spans 200 years.

Below are some of the ice wines produced by Pillitteri which delicately stand on an enclosed glass shelf.

You might want to know that…

• ice wine started in Germany in 1794.
• harvesting the grapes for making ice wine should be done on a cold winter night when the temperature is between minus 10 and minus 13 Celsius and the grapes are completely frozen on the vine.
• frozen grapes have a high sugar concentration.
• one frozen grape yields only one drop of ice wine.
• the juice that’s extracted from the grapes go through months of fermentation
• taste:   intensely sweet and highly concentrated.  You can detect subtle tastes of lychees, mangoes, peaches, and sometimes caramel.
• the first Canadian ice wine appeared in 1973.  It was made by Walter Hainle who later established the Hainle Vineyards in 1978, producing the first commercially available Canadian ice wine.
• when serving ice wine to guests, serve it in small wine glasses – the "bar lady" at the  Inniskillin winery suggested no more than the equivalent of about 6-8 tablespoons.  Ice wine goes best with very sweet desserts.

If you find yourself in the Niagara region, I recommend you take a wine tour or drive to three or four wineries in one afternoon.  The wineries are the pride and joy of Ontario’s Niagara and it is a big deal hereabouts (British Columbia, Nova Scotia and Quebec also produce some of the best ice wines in the country).  If you call ahead, some wineries serve lunch with wine pairings, and your hosts are guaranteed to be the friendliest you could ever meet.

Normalerweise hab ich MINDESTENS jede Stunde ne Ziga geraucht,
manchmal aber auch jede halbe Stunde Eine oder öfter.

Seit der Früh hab ich keine mehr geraucht
und es geht mir gut, um nicht zu sagen fantastisch!

Früher sind derlei Versuche schon
nach nur 3 Stunden gescheitert.

Ich nehm keine Nikotin-Ersatz-Präparate,
sondern nur normales Kaugummi und ein Glas mit Wasser und Strohhalm.

Außerdem hab ich noch die Zuversicht, das Vertrauen, den Glauben
und Helferleins wie Engel, das LoA, Affirmationen, usw. usf.

WARUM heute?

Welch interessante Dinge es doch in der Welt des Menschen zu entdecken gibt, der die Rolle des Aussenseiters freiwillig übernahm. Der Wunsch nach Zugehörigkeit und doch die Angst vor Nähe, Angst nicht zu genügen, ein Spagat, eine Zerreißprobe. Steht sich im Weg mit Selbstzweifel und Bestrafungsdenken, hindert sich daran, das zu bekommen, was er will.

In dieser Rolle meint der Spieler vielleicht noch, er wäre machtlos, gefangen oder gar, dass das Problem nicht bei ihm selbst liegt. Dieser Mensch läuft durch ein Labyrinth, versucht sich selbst zu finden, während einer an seiner Fassade putzt, um vielleicht doch noch die Zugehörigkeit spüren zu können, nach der er sich so sehr sehnt. Was andere Menschen von ihm halten, ist ihm besonders wichtig, nicht ein Staubkörnchen sollte den Anblick seiner Fassade stören.

Aber es gibt nunmal Unstimmigkeiten, die man von Außen sieht, verordnet durch unbewusste Programmierungen, um an den karmischen Aufgaben zu arbeiten. Niemand ist perfekt und jedermanns Weste ist befleckt, das ist keine Schande, das ist Leben und Lernen, so wie es sein soll. Wir sind nicht hier, um schön zu sein, wir sind hier um reif zu werden.

Der Mensch in der Rolle des Aussenseiters weiß das womöglich noch nicht, er putzt sich heraus, wählt ein Mittel zum Zweck, einen SAUGER, mit dem er die restlichen Flecken von seiner Weste entfernt, mit dem er seine Fassade auf Hochglanz poliert. Dass er sich so präsentieren möchte, dass er SAUGT, das ist ja kein Problem, das tun viele andere Menschen auch, denkt er. Kaum jemand blickt hinter die Fassade, kaum Jemand entdeckt die Flecken, durchblickt das komplexe Muster dieser immer mehr Flecken anhäufenden Innenräume.

Welch ein wunderbares SUCHTmittel zum Zweck, mit dem kann er jeden Fleck, jeden DRECK in sich HINEINSAUGEN, wenn er Angst hat, dass er wegen der paar Flecken verletzt wird, wenn er sie aus Unsicherheit verstecken will, weil er denkt, er ist hier, um perfekt zu sein, weil er denkt, dass die anderen Menschen auch keine Flecken auf ihren Westen haben, weil er denkt, er ist hier, um von Anderen beurteilt und bewertet zu werden, weil er nicht weiß, dass diese Klassifizierung nach “Fleckenlos” und “Fleckenreich” die Trennung genau jener Einheit verursacht, zu der er dazugehören will.
