Originally written for Powerplay Magazine.
November 2012

Starting in a typically furious fashion for a thrash album, Reign of Fury’s debut is a surprisingly varied offering, littered with small surprises throughout. Despite the sheer intensity and speed of the bulk of the band’s riffs, Reign of Fury showcase a fantastic penchant for melody throughout World Detonation. The first introduction to this is early on, in the brilliantly melodious guitar lead break in the otherwise manic ‘Infernal Conflict’. Perhaps the band’s biggest assets however are the exceptionally uncharacteristic vocals of Bison Steed. Steed’s delivery sounds like a grittier Jeff Scott Soto and provides a brilliant complement to the extremely metallic speed riffery of the music.

Technicality aside, Reign of Fury are rather skilled songwriters, penning lengthy thrash numbers that actually manage to stay engaging throughout. ‘Heaven Waits – Hell Takes’ opens with a wonderfully serene acoustic passage before electric bombast takes over and forcefully drags the song in to thrashier territories. Somehow, the band keep things fresh throughout the eight minute track, even delving slightly into grind at one point, allowing Reign of Fury to really show off their wide array of metal colours.

There’s simply something rather mesmerising about Reign of Fury’s debut . Whilst borrowing many elements from the genre’s greats, they are clearly much more than just your run of the mill thrash band. This is unquestionably due to their sense of melody being so well weaved in that it does nothing to diminish the intensity of the music. A brilliant first record.

‘World Detonation’
Mosh Tuneage

We’re up to number 13 in my Top 20 of 2012 daily countdown and the holder of this position is both a late entry and a surprise one to boot. This slot belongs to the UK’s Reign of Fury with their debut album ‘World Detonation’.

Reign of Fury have taken on the big boys of thrash this year and, thanks to a fabulous blend of sharp riffs, memorable NWOBHM-reminiscent melodies, twin-guitar harmonies, engaging choruses and a demonstrable 80s Bay Area attitude, they’ve come out on top in the Mansion of Much Metal.

I really enjoyed ‘World Detonation’ with its apparent care-free and breezy outer shell and serious, focused core because the results are fantastically epic, fist-pumpingly powerful and will knock your socks off at one hundred paces.

All the greats start somewhere, and BLOODSTOCK is proud to be the champion of new talent, taking the cause of introducing new bands to the metal masses. To play on BOA’s NEW BLOOD stage, bands will usually enter via the METAL 2 THE MASSES initiative, but this latest wave of additions is a bunch of bands Bloodstock felt were so good, they just had to perform this year.

The magnificent seven come in the form of female fronted melodic metallers GONE TIL WINTER, hardcore rock’n'rollers HURON, modern metalheads and Download festival veterans FALLEN FATE, midlands thrashers REIGN OF FURY, UK power-metallers DREAMCATCHER, balls-out trad metallers REFLECTIONS IN EXILE and grim black metallers INFERNAL CREATION.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased securely online from the e-tainment news UK ticket shop powered by our friends at Eventim UK – BUY TICKETS >>>
