first and foremost that weave is looking tight bey. most of the time in public it’s looking at little rough. she is an excellent performer. looovveed the video, up until lady gaga. for whatever reason i can not, and do not feel anything about her. not the whole tranny thing, who cares about that. i can not get past her need to be “different”. like waayy to different. in a horrible way. i also love the guns. i’m a gunaholic. wasn’t too fond of the short bangs and oversized tee. nontheless, job well done bey. nothing too out of the ordinary.

I don’t think anyone has a more timeless sound than DJ Premier. I mean decades later and his tracks are still enjoyed and looked forward to. Here is another track that he did for Cormega’s latest album that has been remixed with verses from Prodigy and Styles P. If this doesn’t fulfill your raw NYC rap needs, I don’t know what will.

Being a HUGE Shakira fan I felt compelled to share this video with y’all. Apparently she’s not just a dancer, she sings too haha.
Alright here’s the video for Give It Up To Me (feat. Lil Wayne), the 2nd single off her upcoming album She Wolf (Nov 23rd). This video isn’t nearly as mute friendly as Whenever, Wherever…infact the song isn’t as good either…but it is produced by everyones favourite producer, so it’ll get your body bumpin…or maybe that’s all Shakira’s doin…

Buraka Som Sistema just might be the break-out artist of the year. Maybe. I heard from just about everyone that they were the talk of this year’s Coachella and when I saw them at a much smaller venue in Chicago, Sonotheque (RIP), they put on a really solid show. Anyway, they’ve gotten the remix treatment from a number of folks, but not many of them touch the club-ready bounce that Brodinski put on the already infectious “Aqui Para Voces.”

Travesty Dance Group/Houston’s The Recycle Club

Not a single word of this review is original. They have all been used before. Not much was new last Saturday night when Travesty Dance Group/Houston staged The Recycle Club, either. But that was kind of the point of this hip “hybrid happening.”

During a pre-show improv, the Barnevelder stage looked like the scene of a rummage sale. Dancers milled around, choosing costume pieces from a vast assortment of clothing cast-offs allotted for donation to The Salvation Army following the performance. Opinions were taken into account as the performers solicited advice from the audience and one another. When sufficiently layered in mismatched regalia the company nestled into place, disappearing among the carpet of garments on the floor. The array would later be cleverly buffeted upstage as the dancers gathered the pieces like wool sweaters collecting static-adhered socks.

The hour-long performance event consisted of mostly reworked, reused, reinvented, recovered, retrieved, and revisited material from the last 12 years of the Travesty Dance-Houston canon. Choreographer Karen Stokes and company were irREfutably enjoying themselves. They simpered during a remixed “Bayou” rap and an accelerating, gesticulative “RE-Chant.” Thumping beats, newly wedded to phrases of movement from previously debuted compositions, invigorated the cast and brought a new vitality to the pieces, as did Steven Wallace’s re-imagined lighting designs. A segment titled “The Big Mix” wove together seven works seamlessly, though placards were used to divulge their stitching. Otherwise who would have known that these energetic, droll fragments were cut from different cloth?

The Recycle Club cast extended this night to include guest artists, Roberta Stokes and Farrell Dyde. Primary movers and shakers of Houston’s early dance scene, the pair revisited their 1984 collaboration, Double Vision. During a spontaneous duet, the elder Stokes mischievously announced, “older dancers should be heard and not seen.” Dyde astutely veiled his head with a stool and exited in the section’s final moments. The duo may be “recycled dancers” but their distinguished performances were anything but.

Aside from the post-performance revelry, which included culinary delights, drinks, swing dancing, and a splendid recycled-clothing art installation, the evening’s high point was the You & I finale, set to the bouncy 60s tune, Happy Together. Dancer Mechelle Flemming was delightful as she fluttered over her heart’s desire, boisterously danced by Richard Lyders-Gustafson. The doll-like, floppy, frolicking pas de deux gave way to a spirited and enchanting closer.

Stokes’ signature vocal compositions dotted the repertory and a brief film, also created by Stokes, established the program as a collage of mixed media. The latter captured the ensemble as they invaded a Houston recycling center in white overalls and hardhats. A playful preamble, the film incorporated sight gags (including an entertaining SMART car as clown car stunt) and accelerated motion, recalling the silent movie genre. Across every element of the happening, Travesty’s collaborators embraced a casual, genial atmosphere. The audience truly felt like members of the club.

Normally, an artist is rather careful to avoid recycling ideas. With The Recycle Club, Karen Stokes reclaimed her own. All was sorted and in the right bins for an evening teeming with clever fun.

This Wednesday at DEVIL’S PIE, we’ll be featuring the ONLY mashup artist that I will publicly admit liking: SIIK.

Actually, I still cringe even using the word “mashup” anywhere on this blog. But that’s what most accurately describes what SIIK does. He takes the acapella of one song and combines it with a different instrumental. Seems simple enough? Wrong. What I like about SIIK’s remixes (a less-negatively associated term) is that he’s able to marry pop/rnb/rap acapellas with soulful instrumentals in a way that completely transforms the vibe of the song.

Take his Amerie remix for example. This is the one that got SIIK his 15 minutes. He transforms the original club banger, produced by Rich Harrison, who sampled the hard funk ofThe Meters, into a smoothed out head-nodder/two-stepper by surgically attaching a nice Nujabes instrumental to Amerie’s raw vocals.

Yes, I said surgical. Surgery requires training, experience, and skill. Proper “mashups” aren’t simply beat matching two different sources and smacking them on top of each other. You have to match the keys of the tracks (which SIIK is amazing at), you have match differing rhythmic swings of the tracks, you have to edit song arrangements so that musically they fit snugly, and you also have to mix the vocals just right so that they can fit sonically with the instrumental. The reason why I can’t stand mashups is because 1. their producers usually don’t take into account all those steps and end up with a terrible sounding mix and 2. nine times out of ten, they are just party songs made into more-partying party songs. I want to hear something creative and risky.

Lil Wayne Showing Some Love

Tomorrow is going to be a pretty big day in hip hop. There is a lot happening. To make it easier for everyone I am going to break it down in list form and highlight what I think are the three biggest news items.

1. Documentary on Lil Wayne is released on DVD tomorrow.

I know I said I was going to cut back on Lil Wayne, but he is everywhere. Absolutely everywhere. This is another example. Premiering at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, “The Carter” takes an intimate look at the world’s number one rapper. Although the project looks promising Wayne attempting to have it’s release stopped. But eventually allowed it’s release. Judging from some of the clips I have seen. It looks like it should pretty interesting. Below are some clips from the film. The first is the official trailer and the second is a clip from the film.

2. Kanye West Releases “Whatever You Want (G.O.O.D. Music Remix)”

On his blog, Kanye posted a poster teasing the release of a “Whatever You Want” remix. The remix will feature Consequence, John Legend, Common, Kid Cudi and Big Sean. Can’t wait to hear this one. Below is a video for Kid Cudi’s “Make Her Say” Featuring Kanye West and Common

3. Selected Cities Get Pre-Sale Tickets For Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 Tour

To follow the success of Jay-Z’s Blueprint 3 album, Hova will be hitting the road with Young Jeezy. While the tour is country wide and begins in February, selected pre-sale tickets for certain cities will be available tomorrow. Chicago is included as one of those cities. All tickets will be available come the 21st. I missed Jay-Z once when he cancelled his tour with R. Kelly and I am not going to miss him again. Below is a video for Jay-Z’s “Empire State”

First of all, I really like the way Spooky describes humans, computer-users per se, as warm-blooded and alive, meanwhile the computers we interact with on a daily basis are cold. The fact that while we are alive we enjoy tampering with inherently “dead” things, such as the internet which is a tangible, un-breathing object. The most intriguing factor of this metaphor is the idea that we as users breathe life into the computer. If the computer does indeed reflect its corporeal user, it reflects the life that it doesn’t have. If someone doesn’t flip the switch and turn the computer on, it remains dead and unchanging, but we have the power to give life in this aspect. We give life to this medium, while it returns our dark desires of “cold information”.

This Gold Panda remix is sounding pretty fresh so far. It also gives me an excuse to post “Quitters Raga”, since it hasn’t shown up on here yet. The track will definitely be on my “Best of ‘09″ list.

Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull – Fresh Out The Oven (Hex Hector Club Mix)

Wendy has always loved cars. When she was small she would spend hours moving her tiny toy trucks and race cars across the living room floor, dreaming up fantastical adventures where she travelled in the safety of her vehicle. Needless to say that on the evening of her seventeenth birthday, after having passed her driver’s test, she was anxious to take the road alone for the first time and start living out her own real-life adventures.

The only problem was that Wendy had a conscience. She had always been told to be considerate of her environment, and now with global warming in the forefront of the minds of society, Wendy could not justify driving when she knew the consequences to her surroundings. Everything changed that night when she met up with her best friend Jeff at an organic coffee shop after dinner. She had driven to the coffee shop as a reward for having passed her test earlier that day. Upon seeing Wendy pull into the parking lot unaccompanied by her parents, Jeff produced a slightly faded piece of paper from his pocket. “Look Wendy,” he said, “Electric cars have just been approved to drive legally in West Vancouver.” Wendy’s eyes lit with excitement. Jeff could tell that this article would change Wendy’s life.

The next day, Wendy had convinced her parents to purchase the car. Her arguments had been to compelling to resist, “It is fairly inexpensive and is good for the environment. Not to mention it is the latest in leading edge technology.” When Wendy drove home in her new car three days later, her sister Julie laughed, “Wow, that is the ugliest car I have ever seen!” Julie could not understand what Wendy saw in the car. “You will not be laughing when you realize how much money I will be saving on gas! This car may not be pretty, but it is perfect for me,” said Wendy whenever anyone questioned her car choice. Jeff could see how much Julie loved the car, so he always took extra care to avoid criticising the car.

“Jeff, I’m so glad that you gave me that news article, I never would have known about the possibility of owning such an energy efficient vehicle if it weren’t for you,” said Wendy one day when the two of the m were driving together. “I knew that this car would be perfect for you, and it is,” Jeff replied. Each of the two silently smiled to themselves. Both were feeling a shift in their relationship to something more than childhood friends, but neither was willing to risk their comfortable friendship and take the next step.
Wendy and Jeff continued on in companionable silence, crossing over the boundaries communities and cities, living out the stories that Wendy had imagined in the early stages of her childhood. They had been driving for almost an hour without seeing more than four other cars on the road. That was when Wendy noticed a small green Honda on the horizon. It approached just as any other car would have. It was not until it was almost close enough to make out the profiles of the drivers heads that Wendy realized that something was out of the ordinary with the green Honda. It was driving in the wrong lane, in fact, it was driving in Wendy’s lane. Jeff was paralyzed in fear, he could not move a muscle or make a sound. His mind was screaming, but he could not make any action. Wendy’s eyes bulged from her head, and she jerked the wheel to the right. She narrowly escaped collision with the front of the Honda, but was unable to avoid impact on the back of the car which sent it fishtailing towards the fencepost which sat on the edge of the road. In the slow motion film reel of shock that was spinning through Jeff’s brain, he realized that he had moved. His left hand had moved just far enough to wrap around Wendy’s right hand. The two sped towards the fencepost with their hands entwined in unknown friendship.

Wendy’s mom visited the site of the accident six months later. She could still remember with vivid clarity the way her daughter looked as she was pulled from her broken car. Twelve fractures and a bad collision to the head that has caused incurable, constant shakes throughout Wendy’s body were the remnants of that day. These effects, Wendy’s mom could have learned to live with, had it not been for the deeper, more difficult impacts of that accident; Jeff had not survived. His side of the car had been directly in line with the fencepost, it was his blood that had stained the asphalt red. Wendy had gripped his hand until the paramedics pried it loose and taken her from the car.

Wendy knew her mistake. Her car, despite its claims of technological advancement, was not equipped to sustain any type of crash. It rated so low in safety, that many people disputed the decision to allow the electric cars on the road. Wendy lay awake at night crying into the darkness. As her mom crept past her room, she heard Wendy whisper the words “I saved the environment, but sacrificed my best friend.”

A Response to: WV OKs Neighbourhood Electric Vehicles by Sarah Ripplinger

I chose to write a short story documenting the life of a person who fell victim to the safety hazards involved in driving an electric car. I agree that it is important to help save the environment whevever possible, but a major issue with reducing our carbon footprint is the human quality of life impacts. I would say that in most cases, saving the environment does not affect humans negatively, but in this case I wondered if driving unsafe (and ugly) cars is a fair trade off for saving the environment. I hoped to pose this same question to the reader of my story.
