<h3>Maya Batch Render is Slow, use Terminal Rendering Instead</h3>
<p>Having Maya open while rendering is a waste of memory, it makes your batch renders slower. Maya opens up a separate program just to render the scene anyway, so its better to render with terminal.</p>
<p><strong>How to do it: </strong></p>
<p><strong><!--more--><br />
</strong></p>
<ol>
<li>Make sure all your render settings are good to go in Maya, then <em>close Maya</em></li>
<li> Open Maya Terminal in <em>Applications/Autodesk/maya2010/Maya Terminal</em></li>
<li>Open &#8220;<em>Apple QMaster</em>&#8221; in Applications</li>
<li>Find where it says &#8220;Command&#8221; with a little dropdown beside it, and select Maya</li>
<li>Press the + button</li>
<li>copy and paste this into the first text field: <em>/Applications/Autodesk/maya2010/Maya.app/Contents/bin/Render</em></li>
<li>Click &#8220;Choose&#8230;&#8221; for Project and Scene File. Your project is the folder that contains your Maya Project, and Scene file is the .mb file</li>
<li>Set the starting and ending frames how you want under Frames</li>
<li>Uncheck Motion Blur (unless you want it, but its really slow)</li>
<li>(required to use both processors in your computer) Add the following in the Command text area beside the other commands with dashes, makes sure there is a space on either side of it: -n 0</li>
<li>copy the text QMaster generated for you in &#8220;Command&#8221;</li>
<li>Paste that text into Maya Terminal, and hit enter. It should be rendering away.</li>
</ol>
<p>So it sounds terribly complicated, but its really worth avoiding the headaches of batch render and isn&#8217;t all that bad after you&#8217;ve gone through it a couple times. Plus, it renders faster.</p>
<h3>When working with a large scene, use layers a lot</h3>
<p>In this project I had 3 areas each with multiple rooms. I put each room on a separate display layer so I could hide the one I wasn&#8217;t working on. I also made sure to put each room&#8217;s lights on a separate layer so I could disable the lights, speeding up render times.</p>
<h3>When you do preview renders, set the quality to &#8220;Preview Quality&#8221;</h3>
<p>You don&#8217;t need perfect quality to see what a scene will look like when its rendered out. Set the resolution to 1/2 of what your final output will be and use preview quality in render settings. Rendering full quality for previews is a time sink.</p>
<h3>Use depth map shadows whenever possible</h3>
<p>Raytrace shadows look amazing but take forever in an animation. I was hitting 10+ minutes per frame with them, whereas in my final sequence I used depth map shadows which took 1-2 minutes a frame.</p>
<h3>Try out both Maya Software and Mental Ray rendering engines</h3>
<p>You can switch the render in your render settings. By default it&#8217;s set to Maya Software. I found Maya Software to render my textures crisper than Mental Ray, but Mental Ray often rendered faster. The only time Maya Software rendered faster was with many (15) depth map shadows. For render settings, I used production quality, but changed the multipixel filter to 1.4 to make the renders sharper.</p>
<h3>Set Reflections To 1 or 2</h3>
<p>In large scenes, if reflections are set to 10 for example, the reflection will bounce back and forth 10 times, which is slow. 1 or 2 will usually look good enough.</p>
<h3>Lower the Texture Filter setting</h3>
<p>In each texture with an image, set the Filter property to around 0.125. Default is 1.00, which makes textures fuzzy. Unfortunately mental ray seems to ignore this, but it works for Maya Software.</p>
<p>&#8211;</p>
<p>That&#8217;s all I can think of at the moment, hope it helps anyone who comes across the same problems.</p>

He usually does great sketches, and sometimes they are ported to Bridge Commander, or Starfleet Commander. Take a look at a few more of his creations and say how good they are. For my taste, they are HOT!!!<br />

<p>zur Verleihung des Karl-Sczuka-Preis&#8217; möchte ich mir erlauben, folgendes mitzuteilen.<br />
1. Wolfgang Müllers Stück ist eine hervorragende Wahl.<br />
2. Dass Sie den Förderpreis nicht vergeben haben, finde ich unglaublich.</p>
<p>zu 2.<br />
wie kann das sein? Waren die Einreichungen so schlecht? Mich frappiert die Nicht-Verleihung tatsächlich so stark, da ich nicht glauben kann, dass niemand Förderungfähiges dabei war. Es muss doch etliche junge Künstler geben, die nur nach so einer Art Stipendium lechzen.<br />
Gut, ich gebe zu, ich meine nicht zuletzt auch mich damit. Allein ich bewarb mich nicht. Warum? Weil mein Projekt nicht rechtzeitig fertig wurde, um es im schillernden Licht präsentieren zu können. Und darum ärgert es mich, dass kein Förderpreis verliehen worden ist. Wenn ich andere in meine Situation imaginiere, wäre so ein kleines Bischen Förderung so hilfreich. Ich benötige zwei Jobs, um Miete zu bezahlen, mein Kind durchzubekommen und natürlich habe ich dennoch schon Schulden gemacht, aber auch trotzdem mache ich weiter künstlerische Projekte, arbeite im auditiven Bereich, wenn denn etwas Zeit da ist. Und ja, es ärgert mich. Weil ich denke, dass die Gelder bei irgendwelchen hübschen Jury-Sitzungen in Baden-Baden verbraten werden, anstelle von mir einfach mal einen neuen Rechner (meiner ist von 2000) zu besorgen und / oder einfach mal ein taugendes Aufnahmegerät. Das würde schon so viel helfen. Aber mein Eindruck ist, dass es einer studierten Laufbahn mit zusätzlich 27 Praktika bedarf, um in diesem Land überhaupt ernst genommen zu werden. Also ein Hartz 4 Empfänger wird wohl kaum den Karl-Sczuka-Förderungspreis bekommen, wa?</p>
<p>Also irgendwie ist das hier zu einem recht hilflosem Hilferuf ausgeartet. Aber vielleicht haben Sie ja trotzdem mal Lust, meine myspace-Seite anzuhören. Das Projekt, das ich einreichen wollte, ist über sog. mental maps. Wie erfasst ein Gehirn seine Umgebung? Wie weit kann das gehen? Es gibt bereits Vorarbeiten und i.G. möchte ich sehr gerne daran weiter arbeiten. Vielleicht können Sie mir ja ein, zwei Tipps geben; und selbst wenn Sie meinen kleinen Protest lesen und nicht antworten bin ich schon etwas gütiger.</p>

<p>This is a great short film by the Freise brothers. Nathan and Adam Freise both have studied  architecture. Nathan has his MFA from The School of Visual Arts in New York and Adam attended the GSAPP at Columbia University . Their work speaks to a  contorted mix of Lebbeus Woods, SuperStudio, thrown in with a bit of Soylent Green. <a href="http://freisebros.blogspot.com">Check them out</a>

Fiz uma versão à caneta, virei a folha e fiz alguns acertos. Pronto. Bacana pacas isso, porque percebo mais segurança no traço e nas proporções. Iniciei esse <strong>sketch</strong> pelo porta-malas. Queria fazer um desenho que demonstrasse a curva da lataria. Aí ele foi evoluindo e saiu o carro todo.</p>

<p>Roland Emmerich e Harald Kloser hanno scritto la sceneggiatura di questo film e hanno venduto i diritti alla Sony Pictures.</p>
<p>Per realizzare questo film ci sono voluti <strong>200.000.000 $</strong>.</p>
<p>La responsabilità degli effetti speciali è stata affidata alla<strong> Sony Pictures Imageworks</strong> e le scene sono state girate ai <strong>Vancouver Film Studios</strong>.</p>
<p>Più di 100 artisti hanno lavorato sui <strong>1300 effetti speciali</strong> presenti nel film, tra cui eruzioni vulcaniche,terremoti e inondazioni.</p>
<p>Gli artisti presso la società <strong>VFX Uncharted Territory </strong>hanno costruito dei blocchi di città in 3D con <strong>60.000 immagini</strong> ad alta definizione come riferimento. Poi sono stati eseguiti i ritocchi finali.</p>
<p>Il regista, spiegando una delle tantissime scene, ha ripreso i suoi attori in stanze con schermi blu (<strong>bluescreen</strong>) e posizionati su una piattaforma in acciaio, sotto questa vi erano delle pompe pneumatiche per simulare terremoti e movimenti del suolo causate da crolli vari. Questo per avere una <strong>reazione naturale</strong> degli attori al movimento del finto suolo ricostruito poi in post produzione in 3D.</p>
<p>La <strong>Digital Domain</strong>, con la supervisione di <strong>Mohen Leo</strong>, ha lavorato sulla seconda parte del terremoto e su Washington DC dopo che è stata colpita da una nube di cenere vulcanica.<a href="http://animation3d.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/53.jpg"><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-665" title="5" src="http://animation3d.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/53.jpg?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="168" /></a> Lo si era stabilito da subito che tutto l&#8217;ambiente e la distruzione doveva essere creato in 3D. Sono stati creati palazzi, strade, alberi, vetture ecc.  Ad ogni oggetto creato in 3D si è dato un effetto particolare nella scena ed è stato dato anche una secondo effetto grafico, una revisione aggiuntiva per rendere il più realistico possibile la scena finale. Grazie ad un software chiamato <strong>Drop</strong> hanno potuto gestire al meglio la rottura di palazzi e i crolli, ad esempio, lavorando e simulando su pezzi geometrici. In un terremoto ogni cosa si move ed è soggetta alla scossa, quindi anche in animazione 3D doveva essere così. Il regista ha voluto che il terremoto venisse realizzata e visualizzato come un&#8217;onda che si muovesse, alzando strade,suolo, case e tutto ciò che vi era. Questa è stata la parrte più difficile da realizzare.</p>
<p>Nella scena sotto si possono vedere i passaggi per realizzare una scena del film. Nella prima foto si notano gli attori che recitano la loro parte su una piattaforma con pompe pneumatiche, è stato ricreato una parte del paesaggio distrutto e al fondo vi sono i pannelli verdi <strong>(greenscreen)</strong>. Nella seconda foto invece è stato inserita la scena creata in 3D con un altro software al posto dei pannelli verdi. Nella terza e quarta foto invece viene fatto interagire la scena realmente girata tra i pannelli verdi e la scena creata in 3D, sincronizzando ogni oggetto e persona nel dettaglio.</p>

<p>Anche la <strong>Double Negative,</strong> guidata da <strong>Alex Wuttke</strong>, ha collaborato nella realizzazione degli effetti grafici del film. Essi hanno lavorato sulla rottura della terra e la fuoriuscita della lava. Per realizzare le <strong>bombe di lava</strong> lanciate sulla città, la DN, ha fatto uso del software<strong> Maya</strong>, questo servito per il posizionamento e per la tempistica dell&#8217;animazione. I dati così forniti sono stati inseriti ed elaborati dall&#8217;altro software <strong>Houdini</strong> in cui si è fatto interagire tutto l&#8217;ambiente con la lava, l&#8217;impatto delle bombe di lava con il suolo, le varie esplosioni, rotture di strada e del terreno ecc. Lavorare su <strong>Houdini</strong> non è stato facile, hanno simulato la caduta di ogni singola bomba di lava, calcolando la traiettoria e la potenza con il quale impattavano sul suolo. Per gli ultimi ritocchi hanno spedito tutti i dati di nuovo su Maya, per effettuare il <strong>rendering</strong>.</p>
<p>La <strong>Sony Imageworks</strong> ha lavorato sulla stazione nel mezzo dei monti dell&#8217;Himalaya. Hanno modellato tutto in Maya e hanno lavorato molto sulla <strong>texturing Arche</strong> e sula <strong>raytracing</strong> fornito dal <strong>render Arnold</strong>. La ray tracing va a calcolare il percorso della luce e la sua interazione con l&#8217;ambiente circostante.</p>

<p>La corsa in limousine è stata realizzata posizionando l&#8217;autovettura in una stanza con pannelli blu (<strong>bluescreen</strong>),  la macchina è stata posizionata sopra ad una piattaforma con delle pompe pneumatiche per simulare le sterzate, buche e urti, solo gli attori erano reali.<a href="http://animation3d.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/151.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-669" title="15" src="http://animation3d.wordpress.com/files/2009/11/151.jpg?w=300" alt="" width="300" height="141" /></a> Fra le tecniche di simulazione computerizzata utilizzate dalla Sony Pictures per la realizzazione di questa scena c&#8217;è un software chiamato  <strong>Drive-A-Tron</strong> e sviluppato dalla <strong>Californiana Sway Studio</strong>. Si tratta di un software che permette di ottenere scene  3D credibili di automobili in movimento. Drive-A-Tron simula la dinamica dell&#8217;auto non solo tenendo conto di molti componenti come comportamento del corpo vettura, delle sospensioni, delle gomme e del tipo di terreno. Grazie a un vero posto guida dotato di volante, gli operatori possono condurre l&#8217;auto lungo il percorso.</p>

<p>Interessante è il cannone creato per lanciare le macchine, si tratta di un cannone che con aria compressa riesca a scagliare le automobili in aria, vetture ovviamente alleggerite</p>

Even the finest of turquoise is fracturable, reaching a maximum hardness of just under 6, or slightly more than window glass. Characteristically a cryptocrystalline mineral, turquoise almost never forms single crystals and all of its properties are highly variable. Its crystal system is proven to be triclinic via X-ray diffraction testing. With lower hardness comes lower specific gravity (high 2.90, low 2.60) and greater porosity: These properties are dependent on grain size. The lustre of turquoise is typically waxy to subvitreous, and transparency is usually opaque, but may be semitranslucent in thin sections. Colour is as variable as the mineral&#8217;s other properties, ranging from white to a powder blue to a sky blue, and from a blue-green to a yellowish green. The blue is attributed to idiochromatic copper while the green may be the result of either iron impurities (replacing aluminium) or dehydration.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The refractive index (as measured by sodium light, 589.3 nm) of turquoise is approximately 1.61 or 1.62; this is a mean value seen as a single reading on a gemmological refractometer, owing to the almost invariably polycrystalline nature of turquoise. A reading of 1.61–1.65 (birefringence 0.040, biaxial positive) has been taken from rare single crystals. An absorption spectrum may also be obtained with a hand-held spectroscope, revealing a line at 432 nanometres and a weak band at 460 nanometres (this is best seen with strong reflected light). Under longwave ultraviolet light, turquoise may occasionally fluoresce green, yellow or bright blue; it is inert under shortwave ultraviolet and X-rays.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Turquoise is insoluble in all but heated hydrochloric acid. Its streak is a pale bluish white and its fracture is conchoidal, leaving a waxy lustre. Despite its low hardness relative to other gems, turquoise takes a good polish. Turquoise may also be peppered with flecks of pyrite or interspersed with dark, spidery limonite veining.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>When I was a kid, my brother&#8217;s friend had a black Lotus Esprit. It was gorgeous, nothing like I had ever seen before. As he pulled up to the front of the house, a distinguished loud raucous sound was playing from the engine bay. I was in love! In a matter of seconds, the engine surprisingly caught on fire! I just stood there as they unsuccessfully tried to put it out looking at the sleek nose and admiring the width of the car. Daydreaming. It still stands out in my memory till today. A death trap or not, I will always be in love with the Lotus Esprit.</p>

<p>Fast forward to the present. I recently read that Lotus is working on a new Esprit, set to be released some time in 2012. Brilliant! Lotus, unlike other car companies that disappeared over the years, has made an organic comeback. They focused on providing suspension &#38; handling consultancy services to other carmakers such as Kia, Isuzu, Chrysler and even Nissan&#8217;s already legendary Skyline GT-R. They built the Elise and the Exige, 2 track-minded razor cutting machines. They recently just launched the Evora, a 2+2 sports car which can handle cruising and track shredding duties, the Lotus way.</p>

<p>In order to pay respects to its heritage, Lotus will retain the original Esprit&#8217;s mid-engined layout. What kind of engine will it use? There&#8217;s speculation that Lotus could stick to using Toyota engines as it currently does throughout its lineup, although this time they would opt for a V8. There is also a rumor going around that Lotus may opt for BMW&#8217;s new twin-turbo V8 due to the balance of power and efficiency. We&#8217;ll have to wait and see but for now, nostalgia&#8217;s knocking at the door and I need to go answer it.</p>
