Heute war in Deutsch der Reporter Peter Schwarz da, als er rein kam wurde es ganz still.

Er setzte sich auf den vordersten Stuhl und erzählte etwas von sich, dass war richtig interessant.

Dann durften wir fragen stellen, es wurde z.b. gefragt „Woher kriegen sie ihre Geschichten?“

„Wie kommen sie so schnell an die Orte wo was los ist?“

„Was ist ihr Ansporn weiter bei der Zeitung zu bleiben?“

„Woher kommen die Informationen aus dem Ausland, ist dort einer ihrer Kollegen?“

Das und viele andere Sachen wurden gefragt.

Dadurch erfuhren wir viel über die Arbeit eines Reporters.

Leider haben immer nur bestimmte Leute fragen gestellt.

Wir haben dann doch früher als geplant aufgehört und so konnte er noch zu einem wichtigen Termin.

After hearing many arguments on the issues of corporal punishment, deportment, attitudes to work, and many other topics; I smile when I hear the nostalgic recollections about the past. We hear how things were done in a particular way back in 1961, and in 1940 things were done more smoothly or more efficiently and things of that sort, forgetting the fact that populations were smaller, notions of what was important were different, the state of and distribution of knowledge were fragmented and poorly understood. The fact is that people tend to idealize past events the further away in time they move from the event and perhaps even reinterpret their motives and the reasoning for actions taken during those events, unless written down. Then a future generation not knowing the conditions reinterprets again as to the whys and the wherefores!

Perhaps it is a nice notion to wish for a past time, and wistfully wanting those times to return. But like a river, time flows and carries what is present away with it never to return to it past state. Now add “Disruptive Technology” and “Disruptive Theories” and we see why things can change so completely. The definition comes from Harvard Business Schools Professor Clayton M. Christensen and describes “a new technology that unexpectedly displaces an established technology”. Also add to the mix an idea or theory that is disruptive and we have a change which over time in the status quo over time!

I am a lay person, however I think one of the most disruptive technologies to come about was the Gutenberg press, invented on or about 1440 by Johannes Guttenberg. Before this press, books and reading were not available to the populaces of a wide cross section of countries in the then developed world. It not only made “The Bible “ available to the masses but countless other types of information to intellectuals and lay persons alike. It set in motion the processes that would lead to revolutions in politics, religion, science and literature. It would lead to journeys of discovery, the explosion in knowledge and eventually to what we see here in the modern world. Following were disruptive Ideas from the likes of Galileo Galilei, who was the father of modern physics, modern astronomy , and his efforts caused him to be placed under house arrest for his book Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems which was published in 1632. Because of the Printing press his book could never be prohibited. By then it had already been disseminated to parts of Europe that were protestant and more open to change. And that change was the overthrowing of the geocentric view of the universe and replacing it with the heliocentric view which placed the Sun at the center of the universe and not the earth ”geocentric” idea that had come from the ancient Greek philosophers such as Aristotle and Ptolemy. The geocentric view was favored by the Catholic Church who’s prevailing Idea was that theories such as Galileo’s could lead to a down fall of the Church because it was felt that it challenged the Genesis story in the Bible.

Galileo Of course had built his ideas through experimentation and observation and followed on the works of Tyco Brahe , Johannes Kepler and Copernicus. But the year after Galileo died another great  philosopher was born and he was to revolutionize science; and that was Isaac Newton (1643 –1727) and of course because of that disruptive technology the printing press, we would not have had Mr. Newton’s three laws of motion. Today modern biology and the new findings would not have come about without the disruptive Ideas of Charles Darwin (1809- 1882), whose ideas have revolutionize the way we look at ourselves!

But lets look at changes in our time. When I was a youngster (circa 1973) I was prohibited from using an electronic calculator in school “because it would prevent me from understanding my mathematics”. We had to use log books and find tangents, cosines, and logarithms manually. Try operating in today’s environment without a spreadsheet program or a word processor? Did it bring down civilization as we know it? No! What about female bus drivers? Did afros lead to world revolution by soul singers? And what ever happened to those shirt jack suits? Did educating blacks and other ethnicities lead to a degrading of world culture? No! Actually it has enriched it! I think this time period is a period of rapid change. Change unprecedented in human history and experience. The World and it’s people now need to adapt and readjust to what is to come? This period of change will not stop any time soon. We have changed more and yet stayed the same in the last one hundred and fifty years than the last fifteen hundred years. It is scary for some and exciting for others. It is a world where results more than looks should matter ..think about it? If a person were somehow transported from the past into our world how do you think they would react? Most probably die from fright! Their notions of what was right and wrong, their place in the world, their status, would be all turned upside down.

And that is why I laugh!

Eu me lembro de quando estava cursando uma disciplina do sexto período na faculdade e tinha um colega que conversava bastante comigo sobre literatura. Sempre trocávamos dicas de livros e, sinceramente, sempre tive um pouco de dificuldade em encontrar pessoas que tenham esse mesmo interesse que eu. Ele comentou que tinha ido a uma livraria no final-de-semana e havia comprado um livro (“Crepúsculo”) que estava em lançamento, sobre vampiros. Ele achou a história muito interessante e me indicou dar uma olhada. A princípio não me interessei muito, mas fui procurar pelo livro. A história não despertou totalmente a minha curiosidade. Mas comecei a ler e tive uma surpresa muito agradável.

Pensei que o livro fosse dedicado ao público mais velho, mas a medida que avaliei a história, a linguagem e as descrições, percebi que atingiria mais diretamente aos jovens e, principalmente, às garotas. Afinal os meninos, geralmente, gostam de uma literatura com um ritmo mais rápido e com menos romance. Edward, para eles é retrógrado com todo aquele amor romântico e, para as meninas, um sonho de consumo e o protótipo do príncipe encantado da era moderna. Fiquei ainda mais curiosa quando soube que havia a especulação para uma produção para o cinema.

“Crepúsculo” é o primeiro volume da saga vampiresca escrita pela autora americana Stephenie Meyer. O ponto de vista da história é narrado pela protagonista, Isabella Swan, que cresceu com pais separados, morava com a  mãe, Rene e o padrasto, mas muito a contragosto, teve que ir morar por um tempo com o pai, Charlie, um policial na cidadezinha mais chuvosa dos Estados Unidos, Forks, em Washington. Bella é descrita como uma adolescente tímida e desajeitada, mas ela desperta a curiosidade e atenção de toda a cidade assim que chega. É bem recebida e faz novos amigos, como Jessica, Tyler, Angela, Eric e Mike, mas mesmo assim, ela sente que não se encaixa e considera a cidade um tédio. Apesar de Bella detestar a cidade e não se sentir a pessoa mais confortável do mundo em ter que morar com Charlie, ia levando a vida numa boa, sem maiores problemas, até frequentar as aulas de biologia.

Já na primeira aula, Bella percebe que o seu colega de mesa de estudo é um dos garotos descritos como estranhos da família Cullen, mas que para ela ele é descrito como “perfeito”. No entanto, ele demonstrou sentir um verdadeiro desprezo por ela assim que ela se dirige à mesa. Assim que Bella se senta ele sai e a sua expressão a deixa atordoada e, ao mesmo tempo, arrasada. Ele parecia detestá-la. Bella descobre que ele havia se dirigido a coordenação da escola solicitando que o trocassem de turma nas aulas de biologia, deixando-a ainda mais perturbada. Recebendo um não como resposta, Edward teria mesmo que assistir as aulas próximos a Bella. Mas nas aulas seguintes ele, misteriosamente, se ausenta. O que chama a atenção de Bella, que percebe não apenas a sua ausência, mas a de todos os Cullen. Curiosa, ela descobre que eles saíram para para um passeio a campo aberto, atividade que todos da família faziam juntos nos raros dias ensolarados da cidade.

Ao regressar, Edward se mostra mais aberto e mais simpático a Bella, chegando até mesmo a pedir desculpas pelo seu comportamento anterior. Eles começam a se dar bem e despertam curiosidade em alguns alunos da escola. Mike não se mostra muito satisfeito com esse relacionamento, mas não passa de ciúmes, e os outros Cullen a olhavam com uma distância reservada.

Um dia após o término das aulas, Bella estava no estacionamento indo em direção a sua velha caminhonete quando surge um carro desgovernado em sua direção. Do nada Edward surge e evita que aconteça uma tragédia. Consegue parar o veículo que ia em direção a Bella e ela sai ilesa do acidente. Mas nota que o local do carro onde Edward colocou a mão impedindo o impacto, ficou uma mossa profunda. Ela achou aquilo muito estranho e quando tentou conversar com ele a respeito, ele diz que ela estava confusa e não fez nada demais, desconversando e pedindo que ela esqueça o assunto.

Os novos amigos de Bella a convida para um passeio na praia. Bella comenta com Edward e pergunta se ele não quer se juntar ao grupo. Quando Edward descobre para onde ela vai, declina ao convite de forma estranha. Na praia ela reencontra o amigo de infância, Jacob, pertencente a tribo indígena local, Quileute. Curiosa sobre Edward e sua família, Bela se aproveita do interesse que Jacob demonstra ter por ela, para tirar do garoto as informações que precisava. O menino revela a ela que os Cullen não podem entrar em território da reserva, pois os seus ascendentes Quileute tinham um acordo firmando com os vampiros de respeito pelo território um do outro. Porém Jacob revela que tudo isso não passa de lenda. Mas Bella fica com uma pulga atrás da orelha.

Após isso ela pensa em quem os Cullen realmente sejam. Relaciona todos os acontecimentos anteriores e chega a conclusão de que eles eram vampiros.

Bella vai com as amigas a uma cidade vizinha, chamada Port Angeles, para fazer compras. Entediada com as amigas provando vestidos, sai pela cidade a procura de uma livraria e diz a elas que as encontraria para jantarem. Bella acaba se deparando com um grupo de homens que a perseguem. Quando a alcançam, Edward aparece num carro salvando-a, mais uma vez. Bella fica intrigada com a chegada inesperada de Edward e ele demonstra estar com muita raiva dos homens e acaba desabafando dizendo que eles pensaram coisas muito ruins para fazer com Bella e estava com vontade de matá-los.

Eles se dirigem ao restaurante da cidade, onde Bella encontraria as amigas, mas eles chegam muito tarde, já quando elas estavam indo embora. Mas Bella fica para jantar com Edward e depois ele a levaria para casa. Bella nota que ele nunca comia, nem na escola e nem lá no restaurante. Bella, na volta, no carro discute com Edward a respeito das suas teorias. Ele então a leva para a floresta e confirma o que ela pensa que ele seja. E mostra a ela todas as suas capacidades como vampiro. Confessa para Bella que sentiu muito desejo de beber o sangue dela e, com isso, justifica o seu comportamento no primeiro dia da aula de biologia. Diz que o sangue dela tem o cheiro mais gostoso de todos que ele já havia sentido.

Edward releva também a sua história e o seu poder especial: ler mentes. Mas conta que nunca conseguiu ler a mente de Bella, o que sempre o deixou curioso. Os outros vampiros também tinham poderes especiais e individuais. Ele destaca que sua irmã Alice era capaz de prever o futuro, o outro irmão Jasper, o de controlar e equilibrar as emoções humanas. Edward conta que a sua família é diferente dos outros vampiros, pois Carlisle é muito pacífico e estabeleceu como regra para toda a sua família que os Cullen não beberiam sangue humano e sim sangue dos grandes animais da floresta. Explica que quando eles estão com “sede” a coloração dos olhos fica mais vermelha e quando saciados eles ficam com os olhos caramelados. Bella, realmente é uma menina diferente, se fosse qualquer outra adolescente da cidade, ficaria aterrorizada, mas ela ficou apenas cada vez mais fascinada e curiosa a respeito da família de Edward, sua história e a respeito dos vampiros.

Diante de tantas diferenças e problemas que essa relação poderia significar e ter, eles assumem o namoro. Edward então leva Bella para conhecer a sua família, os pais, Carlisle e Esme e os irmãos, Emmet, Rosalie, Jasper e Alice, que se tornou uma grande amiga de Bella. Por outro lado, Rosalie demonstra ficar incomodada com a presença de Bella e com a relação que ela constrói com o irmão. Ela fica muito encantada com a grande casa branca e aberta na floresta, onde a família morava. Com o fato de Bela ter ficado curiosa com o fato de não haver caixões, Edward explica que isso tudo não passa de mito e lenda, afinal os vampiros não dormiam, não havendo necessidade de caixões para dormir.

Concomitante as descobertas feitas por Bella, alguns acontecimentos estranhos acontecem em Forks. Montanhistas estavam desaparecendo e aparecendo mortos e um amigo de Charlie foi assassinado. Comovendo a toda a cidade e também despertando os institutos protetores dos pais. Charlie dá a Bella um spray de pimenta para ela se defender. Mas ele ainda não sabia quão pouco uso o spray teria para os reais causadores de tanta confusão.

Após algumas semanas, a família marca um jogo de beisebol na clareira da floresta. Todos estavam se divertindo quando no meio do jogo aparecem três vampiros intrusos. Apesar de toda preocupação e planos da família para Bella não ser notada nem sentida, um vento contrário estraga tudo e Jasper, um vampiro caçador fica enlouquecido de vontade de beber o sangue de Bella. Edward e os demais preparam um plano de defesa, eles lutam e Edward foge com Bela.

Um plano foi feito para proteger a menina e a sua família. Bella teve que mentir para o pai dizendo que tinha rompido com Edward e queria ir embora, para ficar com a mãe. Charlie fica arrasado e também com muito ódio de Edward.

Bella volta para sua cidade natal, Phoenix, no Arizona, na companhia de Alice e Jasper. Eles se hospedam em um hotel enquanto o resto da família tenta localizar e matar James. Como um bom vampiro farejador, James percebe que os Cullen tentaram despistar Bella e ele consegue descobrir onde ela está. O telefone celular de Bela toca e ela vê que a chamada foi feita de sua casa, preocupada, atende. Sua mãe parece estar desesperada e o tempo inteiro chama o seu nome. James fala com Bella e diz que sua mãe será morta se ela não for ao encontro dele na antiga escola de Balet que a menina frequentava. Em um momento de distração de Alice e Jasper, Bella foge e vai ao encontro de James, mas quando chega lá descobre que tudo era uma armadilha. O vampiro pegou uma antiga fita caseira em que Bella se escondia e sua mãe ficava desesperada a sua procura e utilizou as frases de Rene para arrastar Bella para a morte.

James investe contra Bella, faz um vídeo enquanto a tortura. Em uma queda, Bella se corta em cacos de vidros, sangrando e despertando os desejos mais sombrios de James que não resiste e morde a mão da garota. Alice nota a ausência de Bella e usa seus poderes para descobrir onde ela está. Consegue falar com Edward e eles vão em defesa de Bella. Quando James estava mordendo a mão de Bella, os Cullen chegam e Edward a salva mais uma vez. Suga o sangue dela para retirar o veneno que a transformaria em vampira. Parecia que ele não conseguiria parar de sugar o seu sangue, tamanho o frenesi que demonstrava estar sentindo, mas Carlisle o desperta do seu transe e Bella é levada para um hospital.

Após após dias no hospital, Rene volta de viagem para ver como estava a filha e Edward finge estar dormindo próximo a cama de Bella para ouvir a conversa dela com a mãe. Bella retorna a Forks e vai, contra a sua vontade, ao baile anual da escola. Lá, a sós, ela insiste para ele a transformar em vampira, idéia que Edward rejeita e é enfático na sua decisão.

“Crepúsculo” é um sucesso de vendas, traduzido para 37 idiomas, tendo uma grande aceitação e receptividade dos leitores, principalmente do público jovem. O romance foi escolhido como o melhor da década pela Amazon, ganhou diversos prêmios, incluindo o “Top 10 Livros para Jovens Adultos” da American Library Association, entrou na lista de Best sellers do New York Times e Best seller de 2008, no USA Today. No Brasil, os livros de Meyer emplacam há meses, as primeiras colocações nas posições de mais vendidos em diversos veículos de comunicação diferentes. Continuando en la línea de compartir con vosotros mis impresiones personales y datos técnicos, que pudieran ser de interés, sobre diferente material de equipamiento para nuestros queridos acuarios, os dejo el análisis de un difusor de CO2 “diferente” a los que habitualmente utilizamos y que bajo mi punto de vista en valoración precio-efectividad es bastante recomendable y una buena alternativa a otros difusores o reactores.

El difusor es de la marca Tunze, que como ya sabréis, se trata de un fabricante alemán con más de cuarenta años de experiencia en el estudio de la acuarística, su filosofía es investigar biotopos acuáticos los más naturales posibles de todo el mundo y desarrollar para ello componentes que posibilitan las condiciones del agua naturales en el circuito cerrado del acuario.

Básicamente, el difusor es un reactor de CO2 de alta potencia, compuesto por una mini-bomba, y un tubo donde inyectaremos el CO2 para producir la reacción por osmosis mediante la presión ejercida por el agua que bombea la mini-bomba.

CONTENIDO DEL PRODUCTO

- Una mini-bomba con cable de alimentación de corriente de 2 metros de longitud.
- Tubo de plástico, donde se producirá la reacción, que consta de tres piezas.
- Accesorios para la fijación del conjunto en el acuario.
- Instrucciones de uso.

La mini-bomba: Tiene un consumo de 5W y es capaz de mover un caudal de agua de 100 a 300 litros por hora, esta potencia es ajustable girando el tubo de salida, disponiendo marcado en relieve por encima de éste el sentido de giro con MIN-MAX (mayor potencia girando en el sentido de las agujas del reloj y menor pontencia en sentido contrario). La toma de agua la realiza por la superficie del plano inferior, filtrando ésta a través de una pequeña rejilla de plástico, que es abatible para facilitar la limpieza tanto de la rejillas como de las aspas del rotor.

El tubo de plástico: Consta de tres piezas, una primera acodada, encargada de la unión a la mini-bomba, una segunda de 15 cm. de largo que dispone en su parte inferior de una toma externa para el ajuste del tubo que proporcionará CO2 al reactor y una tercera y final con rejilla vertical para la salida del agua una vez disuelto el CO2.

Los accesorios de fijación al acuario: En este caso se trata de un diseño utilizado ampliamente por la marca en muchos de sus productos y que en mi opinión es innovador y muy acertado. A pesar de lo aparatoso que pueda ser a la vista la regleta y los numerosos tornillos, tuercas y otras piezas que contiene el producto, no utilizaremos todos salvo raras excepciones. En este caso el fabricante facilita la fijación en diferentes tipos de acuario (soporte universal), distinguiendo la fijación con soporte en vidrios verticales o vidrios horizontales de acuario y el espesor de los cristales de hasta 39mm o en marcos de acuario hasta una anchura máxima de 34 mm y que sobresalen sobre 1 cm. hacia el interior (acompaña al conjunto una ventosa para estos casos), cubriendo así multitud de posibilidades.

Este sistema sustitutivo de las generalmente utilizadas ventosas, que con el tiempo tienden a perder elasticidad y por tanto adherencia, es muy eficaz, cómodo y útil.

Para el montaje fijaremos el riel con la tornillería y piezas necesarias, dependiendo del tipo de acuario, y sobre este riel desplazaremos a la altura que nos interese la mini-bomba (siempre debe quedar completamente sumergida) elevando una lengüeta que dispone de un tetón que coincide con los agujeros de la guía o riel.
Por tanto, lo que quedará fijado al acuario será la guia o riel, quedando movible y extraíble la mini-bomba y tubo de reacción para su mantenimiento y limpieza.

En la siguientes imágenes podéis verlo en el frontal de un cubo de mediano tamaño (120 l) para apreciar la instalación en un acuario con marco (de ahí la necesidad de la ventosa como sujeción inferior para darle la verticalidad idónea). En funcionamiento se puede observar que en la parte superior se van acumulando las burbujas de CO2 que tienden a emerger y por osmosis (diferencia de presiones) se disuelven en el agua, reincorporándose ésta al acuario con la disolución ya realizada, sin crear ningún tipo de corriente apreciable.

Según el fabricante este difusor se emplea en acuarios provistos de vegetación de entre 200 y 1000 litros, alcanzando una potencia máxima de cuatro burbujas por segundo.

PRUEBAS REALIZADAS:
Responde perfectamente a las expectativas del fabricante, si bien, se aprecia una pérdida de burbujitas por el fondo del difusor al elevar el número de burbujas por segundo y mantener el caudal de la bomba al máximo, que según el fabricante, estas burbujas están compuestas por aire porque el CO2 se difunde por osmosis en el acuario y, al contrario, la parte de gas en el agua, es decir, ante todo oxigeno y nitrógeno, se difunden en las burbujitas, estableciendo para el caso de una formación excesiva de burbujitas reducir la capacidad de la bomba mediante el giro del tubo de salida que dispone la misma.

IMPRESIÓN PERSONAL:

Buen candidato para suplir los inconvenientes de los reactores externos sin bomba incorporada, que necesitan de instalación fijada en la salida de los tubos del filtro, para obtener presión y ayudar a la disolución total del CO2, dependiendo la movilidad del difusor a la del filtro, haciendo inviable la utilización en acuarios alternativos.

En la misma línea, aventaja a los típicos difusores de cristal en la eficacia de la disolución del gas, al no tener prácticamente pérdidas el CO2 inyectado al acuario, en contra, podríamos matizar ese mínimo gasto de 5W de la mini-bomba.

En estética, no deja de ser otro cacharro más en el interior del acuario, por lo que entraría en juego la balanza estética-eficacia.

Entre las partes a destacar distinguiría la perfecta y práctica fijación al acuario, el volumen que ocupa en el interior del mismo en comparación con otros reactores internos, su eficacia y su coste.

VALORACIÓN

Calidad: Media en sus componentes y alta en eficacia.
Funcionalidad: Alta para el abonado de acuarios plantados o como medio para disminución del Ph integrándolo en un sistema con válvula senoidal y controlador de Ph.
Precio: 23,90 €

06.02.09 Continuano a Sciacca le due giornate dell’Associazione italiana odontoiatri di Agrigento. Oggi pomeriggio, 6 febbraio, alle 16 conferenza del dottor Pizzo sulla gestione del paziente fumatore in parodontologia (dovrebbe occuparsi di tutto ciò che sta intorno al dente come le gengive). La conferenza si terrà  all’ex convegno San Francesco di Sciacca terme, in via Agatocle 2.

Il pomeriggio di ieri. Nel pomeriggio di ieri fino alle 18.30 in programma una discussione sui risvolti medico-legali delle complicanze in terapia impianto-protesica (che dovrebbe riguardare l’impianto e l’applicazione di protesi) con il dottor Rosario Di Raimondo.

In programma contemporaneamente anche una relazione del dottor Ciro Fuschino sugli strumenti Protaper e di otturazione con tecnica Thermafil (nel primo caso si dovrebbe trattare di una gamma di strumenti fra cui gli otturatori e nel secondo caso di una tecnica utilizzata nelle otturazioni dei canali dentali). Docente dei corsi anche il dottor Giuseppe Del Prete sulla semplificazione delle procedure chirurgiche con l’impiego dei cosiddetti impiati corti (forse impianti a dimensione ridotta?).

Sicurezza ed odontoiatria. Incontro all’Ordine dei medici e degli odontoiatri di Agrigento (via Picone) sulla sicurezza degli operatori e dei pazienti nelle strutture odontoiatriche. Si discuterà dalle 9 anche di autorizzazione sanitaria ed interverranno il professor Giuseppe Gallina (presidente del corso di laurea in Odontoiatria dell’Università di Palermo), Salvatore Cuffaro (direttore del dipartimento di Prevenzione dell’Asl 1 Agrigento), Vittorio Spoto (direttore del servizio «Igiene e ambienti di vita» della stessa Asl) e Rosalia Catalano (responsabile dell’unità operativa «Studi ed ambulatori medici»), Vincenzo Pinella (direttore dell’area «Tutela salute e sicurezza sui luoghi di lavoro» dell’Asl 1 di Agrigento), Guido Capraro (direttore dell’Ispettorato del lavoro di Agrigento) e l’ispettore Salvatore Indelicato.

Parteciperà anche, per le forze dell’ordine, il capitano Francesco Geraci (comandante del Nas dei Carabinieri). L’organizzazione è della commissione «Albo odontoiatri» dell’Ordine dei medici di Agrigento, diretta dal presidente Salvatore Casà, e dello stesso Ordine agrigentino, guidato dal presidente Giuseppe Augello.

Long distance relationships…

Long – meaning far and away. Because you know… some couples could always be not away and yet so far apart still; and I know I had no need to explain myself twice.

Relationship – … … … … …

Today I realized that I hate being in a long distance relationship. Well I don’t hate it, I just hate that it’s long distance. I realized, after two months of complete okayness with this situation, that I am absolutely not okay with the current state of being.

Days pass and I don’t talk too much with Loreena, but then when I do, I find that those times are some of the most bittersweet moments in the history of my entire life. Tender, simple moments – constantly being haunted by the fact that no matter what we talk about, that no matter how much we connect, that no matter how good it feels to hear her voice, the moment the phone hangs up… the moment the email ends… she’s still not there in the physical to sit down with and enjoy a meal with – or even the simple gesture of eye contact… still no physical presence.

Long distance relationship with God.

How many of us have them?  (Yes I have to go here – everything revolves around our relationship to God)

I have to write about this, no matter how mad it makes you feel that I even mentioned such a subject. I mean just the phrase “Long distance relationship with God” alone carries so many implications. But I will only explain my experience – anything else would not do.

Long distance. A vast divide. An Expansive Chasm. A world apart.

Sin.

Sin comes in many shapes and sizes. It comes in a variety of flavors too! Some like it spicy, some like sweet, sour, salty, thick ketchup, potato mashed or smashed… everything simply to say that I realize more and more that I hate sinning hate sinning, and how capable I am of it.

The other day in fact I caught myself lying three times! And I followed through with those lies. I stayed true to them. It was about whether I had made phone calls or not – I didn’t make them. But I said I did! It felt just like denying Jesus. Three times… three times I made an effort and succeeded in sinning. By the third time I broke down in my heart; knowing that I had sinned. I had to consciously repent.

But here’s the thing.

(There’s a always a thing – a point to be made – a problem to be addressed)

I never wanted to admit it, but I have been in a long distance relationship with God too! No wonder I prayed all those days and never felt him near. No wonder that every conversation I had was so bittersweet it killed me. I made connections with God, but never physically – well, as physical as you can get with God – spent time with him. I wasn’t searching for the will of God in my life or the plan of God for my life or for inspiration from God to feel alive again, I was longing for his presence in my life. I longed to feel him close, holding me, simply being there with me. Isn’t that what’s so great about being in a romantic relationship?

Romantic relationships offer two very solid elements that are not only pleasant but necessary in life. One is emotional, cognitive commitment, the mental decision to love and to be with that person. The other is the physical connection that takes place – the hugs, the kisses, the providence, protecting – all those things that flow from having the emotional/spiritual connection. I bid to you that it is the same with God.

I’ve learned a few things in my years. I’m not old, I’m still inexperienced, but I can say with confidence that just because I make a connection with a person does not mean that they are to be my soul mate, or that I’m supposed to establish a physical relationship with them also.

This happened a lot in college.

There were soooooo many girls there it was ridiculous. I was making connections on a daily basis. Connections that I thought were like, “Wow – let’s start dating immediately”. Up until then the only friends I had were from church. And the secular friends I did have, our tie was because of Music. And music for me was always associated with God and worshipping Him. So to me, I felt love from God… but so many girls? Having good personalities, attractive, good head on their shoulders PLUS they loved Jesus?! – What was I supposed to think?

I established many connections. None of them ever came to fruition as far as dating. And I’m way glad now because God has provided the perfect person for me. But then, it was not so easy to see. Sure I was friends with a lot of people, but that desire to establish the physical closeness of dating was always in the back of my mind. Praise God for a busy schedule and the constant reminder that college would be over one day and I would be heading back to Salinas or San Jose. God had a way of reminding me that I cannot fully explain.

Emotional/Spiritual Connection is not a basis for physical/dating relationship.

Maybe that’s why it seems that more and more in the world are becoming “confused”. They are confused because they have had so much trouble making connections, or never had a genuine one, that the moment they do establish a connection on an emotional/spiritual level, they think “Wow! I’ve never felt this before! It feels so good! I feel SoOoOo complete!” – And the next thing you know they are in a relationship everyone can see is totally unhealthy, or even same sex relationship, and worse it often leads to divorce and people being torn apart.***

All because they didn’t have a little wisdom to differentiate between a genuine connection and a genuine basis for relationship.

Back to my topic.

We are aware of God. We even have His words to Follow. Having his words and seeing His actions, however, don’t seem to be enough to breathe life into your dead, dry bones.

I am learning to value the presence of God.

This is a phrase that I’ve heard a bunch of times in the past few years. “Value the presence of God”. And I hated it! I didn’t want to listen to that cliché garbage that is such annoying jargon – especially since I knew it was something I needed to do. I always associated the presence of God with getting all crazy and being very charismatic during church – which I am finding out is not necessarily the case. Simply spending time with God has been what I’ve been looking for. Yes, I want God to speak to me, I want to hear his voice and read his words… but what I’ve really wanted all this time is to know, to feel and know, that He is with me. That when I get down to pray, or am just walking on the road, He is really there with me.

This isn’t just a cognitive exercise to remind you that God is always with us, this the assurance, the physical part of a relationship. That’s what makes the romantic relationship so special. The connection goes deeper than just talking and getting to know a person really well. And that’s what valuing the presence of God is like, it’s a relationship that is closer than just knowing or getting to know a person. It’s the physical presence of someone you love that brings into a deeper relationship.

Don’t get me wrong, the words and communication matter just as much, if not more! They form a foundation for the relationship, but it’s the being there, the company, the presence of the person that makes all the difference.

Long Distance Relationship.

They are not good. Maybe for a short time, but to try and have a real relationship with a person… no.
I am assured that I will get to spend the rest of my life with Loreena, and I have been far from God for a long time, truly though, my time here is bringing me back to life and back to him.

Be far away from God no more!
Why do you torture yourself and let yourself believe that you are close to God when you are no where near him?! Don’t just spend your time reading and thinking of God – actually spend time with Him.

But how do I do that? you might be asking.

I had to let go of every thought and logic and simply ask God to come. To forget about every theology class, to forget about everything that I thought I knew about the presence of God, and come – humble myself, admit my wrong, admit that I’m far, and that I want Him near.

It’s like being saved all over again. Or maybe it’s just being saved. I know for sure, though, it is as David expressed, “Restore to me the JOY of my Salvation!“. (Psalm 51)

***Now, I’m an inspired idealist. I’m inspired often to write and think of the things I do, so if anyone wants to do a particular study on this, and use my ideas as a basis for your hypothesis – have some class and give credit where it’s due – First off ME – Cause i acted and wrote this out. Second, whether you believe in him or not, God – I would have killed myself three times already if i had no inspiration for life and inquiry from Him.
